note from the team What is Constellations about? Well, that is a fantastic question. This little play is about a great many things. It’s about falling in and out of love. It’s about meeting a stranger at a barbecue, or maybe a wedding. And maybe that stranger is just a stranger, but maybe that stranger is the love of your life. It’s about betrayal, it’s about bees, it’s about astrophysics. It’s about life. It’s about death. And it’s about choice. What choice to make or not make. Did I make a choice? Or did this just happen? And if I did make a choice, what choice was it that made this happen? Could I have stopped it? Changed it? Made it better? And our play simply says, “maybe.” The fact of the matter is that we know absolutely nothing about the world and ourselves, and how any of our choices could have caused any one thing. What we do know, for certain, is that there is right now and there are the people who are here. Constellations asks that you not despair in the weight of choice, because that means living in either the future or the past. It asks that you live in the now and the infinite hope of now. It asks you to put hope in the fact that, if we try just a little this could all be okay. And if not, at least we spent it joyously together.
biographies Marielle Shiring (Marianne): Marielle is a junior double major in Arts Administration and Theatre with a minor in English and is so excited to be a part of CONSTELLATIONS! Previous roles at Carthage include Beth in LITTLE WOMEN, Mary/Benvolio in ROMEO & JULIET WALK INTO A BAR on the mainstage, Anna in THE BALTI-
biographies MORE WALTZ in the studio, and Laura in THE GLASS MENAGERIE in directing scenes. One favorite performance of Marielle’s was Chorus in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (Capital City Theatre, Madison, WI). Marielle has also served at the Stage Manager for EURYDICE, the Dramaturg for PATIENCE & FORTITUDE and as the Administrative Assistant for the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). This summer Marielle will be working as the Administrative Intern at Hope Summer Repertory Theatre (HSRT) in Holland, Michigan. Marielle would like to thank her family and best friends, Lane and Bree, for all their love and endless support. “Maybe we are stars apart from each other, that there’s an invisible line connecting us. I’d like to think we are together in one constellation” – Nicola An Bree Meinke (Stage Manager): Bree is a sophomore double major in Music Theatre and Marketing and is so excited to be stage managing her first show at Carthage College! Previously she has been the assistant stage manager for EURYDICE at Carthage on the mainstage. She has also performed as Mr. Laurence in LITTLE WOMEN and performed in OUR TIME and SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD in Music Theatre Workshop. Bree is so excited to share this production of CONSTELLATIONS with everyone and hopes it will mean just as much to the audience as it does to her. She would like to thank the wonderful cast and director for sharing their talents and giving her an opportunity to work on this show. Teagan Wilkins (Roland) is a senior General Theatre major. They have previously worked on SMOKEFALL and PATIENCE AND FORTITUDE as a costume designer. Teagan has been seen in BODY AWARENESS as Joyce, ROMEO AND JULIET WALK INTO A BAR as Kayla, and in TWELFTH NIGHT as the Captain and Antonio. They are also an employee in the costume shop on campus. Fine Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
