producer notes

I’d like to tell you the story of Ricki. Ricki was the drummer on the first production of HAIR that I was fortunate enough to music direct in Provincetown, MA the summer of 2017. She is a brilliant musical drummer who was super passionate about this music, having been a young adult during the time of the Vietnam War, loudly singing along most nights of our production. She turned to me one day and asked if she could share something with the cast; the rest was history.

You see, Ricki was Richard back during the Vietnam War. She made a full transition in the late 90s into the amazing, beautiful woman she is now, but Richard was 18 and given their draft card. We sat the cast in a circle on the stage while Ricki pulled out a scrapbook, turning to a page where she showed us Richard’s driver’s license right next to a burned draft card. She began to tell us how she and her friends rioted and eventually burned their cards to protest the thousands of casualties and the disproportionate number of black men enlisted and subsequently killed in the Vietnam War.

It was then that this show became real, at least for me. Here was Ricki, who could possibly be a human one of these tribe members was based on, playing drums to the music she loved as a young adult, and would passionately play and belt her face off, while never missing a cue, who stood in protest, and burned her card as the tribe members do in HAIR.

This show is not meant to make the audience leave happy. Yes, the music is familiar. Yes, the subject matter can be quite humorous. And yes, this show deals with race. And yes, this show deals with smoking and sex. All these things combined create HAIR and the version you will see today.

Fine Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
