Laura Kaeppeler: To help us celebrate the 4oth Anniversary of the Treble Choir, Laura Kaeppeler, former Treble Choir singer, will join us as guest soloist. Laura Kaeppeler is a nationally recognized performer, advocate for at-risk youth and inspirational speaker, originally hailing from Kenosha, Wisconsin. She is a 2010 graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Music and Vocal Performance.
In 2012, Laura Kaeppeler became the 86th woman to be crowned Miss America.. As Miss America, Laura became the Goodwill Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and her personal platform, Advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents. Laura is passionate about advocating for children of incarcerated parents, and has been invited to speak at The White House and partner with organizations including the U.S. Dream Academy, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America, Operation Open Arms, and others. In 2012, Laura was a recipient of the Courage Award from The CarePlus Foundation, an organization that supports the innovative and life-changing programs and services for in-need adults, and also received the Thomas Mott Osborne
Medal from The Osbourne Association, a group that creates opportunities for people affected by the criminal justice system.
An acclaimed classical vocalist, Laura has been a featured soloist with orchestras across the country and has performed the national anthem at numerous sold-out venues, including Angel Stadium, Lambeau Field, Miller Park, Wrigley Field, and Yankee Stadium. Laura has also performed for members of the United States Armed Forces and their families with the USO.
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Carthage Treble Choir: The 2022-23 academic year marks the fortieth anniversary of the Carthage Choir. In 1982, the Chapel Choir, formerly a mixed (SATB) choir became a treble choir under the direction of Dr. John Windh. In 1989, Prof. Amy Haines took over the leadership and soon thereafter the name was changed to Carthage Women’s Ensemble. In 2001, Dr. Michael Burkhardt became director of this ensemble. Upon his arrival at Carthage in 2005, Dr. Peter Dennee took over the directorship of this ensemble and in 2018, the choir’s name was changed to Carthage Treble Choir.
Treble Choir’s accomplishments over these forty years include over a dozen premieres of new works by some of the most recognized choral composers of the twenty-first century; many domestic tours includ ing tours to Florida (2013 & 2017) and Washington, D.C. (2006); international tours to Central Europe (2007 & 2023), China (2015), and Tanzania (2019); and being selected to perform at the American Cho ral Directors Association Midwest Regional Confer ence in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (2016).

Welcoming our new Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Margaret Burk: Margaret (Maggie) Burk is a conductor, choral singer, and composer dedicated to the transformative power of choral music. She is the recently-appointed Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., where she oversees the choral area, teaches coursework in music education, choral literature, and conducting, co-directs the Christmas Festival, and directs the award-winning Carthage Choir. In demand as a clinician, she recently conducted the Virginia All-State Treble Choir; next summer, she will serve as music director for the Royal School of Church Music’s Midwest Training Course in Evansville, IN.
Maggie completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan, where she studied with Eugene Rogers. She earned the Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the Yale School of Music/ Institute of Sacred Music, where was awarded the Robert Shaw Prize for outstanding achievement in choral conducting as well as the Institute’s Faculty Prize for scholarship, performance, and community leadership. Prior to her graduate studies, Maggie taught public school choral music in Minnesota and Kansas. She holds the Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. As an advocate for
the LGBTQ+ community, she has given presentations at various professional conferences about welcoming students across the gender spectrum into choral classrooms.
Maggie is also an active composer and professional chorister. Her music is published by Hal Leonard and Selah Music Publishing and has been heard on the BBC Radio 3 as well as at churches throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. As a soprano, she is a regular member of the professional choral ensembles Audivi (Detroit), the Tallgrass Chamber Choir (Kansas City), and Musica Atlantica (Savannah, GA). She is an avid foodie, runner, and hiker and is the proud mom of two senior rescue cats.
