music department co-chair Dear Prospective Student, Thank you for auditioning for our Music Program at Carthage College. We are extremely proud of who we are and what we do in our Department, and would love to welcome you to our Music Family. Carthage offers excellent opportunities for instrumental students, including the Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Wind Orchestra, the Carthage Philharmonic, and the pit orchestra. Carthage is known for its top five ranking in short term study abroad tours and the Music Department is no exception. Over the last few years, our instrumental ensembles have toured several states in the US, and internationally to Japan, Austria, and Germany. This coming semester, pandemic protocols permitting, the Wind Orchestra and Carthage Philharmonic are slated to tour the Southwest and Europe. Carthage is a place where you are encouraged to think in terms of “and” rather than “or.” Whether you’re interested in Neuroscience, Business, Economics, Physics, Nursing, English, Psychology, or Music, you can opt for multiple degree options to explore and combine your areas of interest. Many of our ensemble participants combine multiple passions during their time at Carthage - you’ll find non-majors, minors, majors and double-majors playing in the groups and taking private lessons with our stellar studio teachers. We specialize in helping our students achieve whatever their personal goals are - from those looking to go on to medical school, pursue a career in music education, or in music performance, we can help you realize your aspirations. However, our greatest asset is one that can’t be measured; we are a family. We believe that like any good ensemble musician, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and we get there through mutual growth, encouragement, support, and healthy accountability. We would like to encourage you to pay a visit to campus on a regular day of classes. We will be most happy to organize the entire day for you: From sitting in classes, chatting with current students, taking a sample lesson with a private instructor, meeting with the Department Chair, meeting with an Admissions and Financial Aid Advisor, attending an ensemble rehearsal and more. This is a very valuable way for you to know us in real time!

Why Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are looking forward to having you with us next fall! Welcome! director of instrumental activities February 2022 Music LIVES at Carthage! As you arrive here today to audition for entrance into our music program, and scholarship consideration, you should know that AMAZING things happen here, and that we want you to be a part of something very special in the next four years. Ours is a welcoming and supportive community, that values your study of music within a diverse and engaging liberal arts curriculum. There are many opportunities to continue to play in groups ranging from the Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Pep Band to the Concert Band, and Carthage Philharmonic. Our premiere instrumental ensemble, the Wind Orchestra, made their sixth trip Japan in January 2020 and will be on tour to Phoenix, Arizona in March. In 2023-24 this group will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary Season—your sophomore year. Regardless of the ensemble, you’ll find a sense of belonging that will support your musical aspirations and personal growth. As you find your way through the various activities today, take some time to connect with our terrific students here. They are your best resource for finding out what makes this place tick. Play your best in the audition, make music out of those notes on the page, and simply let us hear “who you are” as a musician. We wish you great success today. Ganbatte!

director of orchestral activities Welcome! It’s been a tough few years for everyone, and as you visit various colleges and universities to decide on your home for the next few years, you’ll often hear the terms like, “family,” “special,” and “unique,” but I can honestly say that the sense of family is what helped power Carthaginians through the pandemic. It has warmed my heart to see students and faculty pulling together, where true concern for each other has driven our interactions. Rehearsals have always been special, but they’ve come to mean so much more for us. Carthage has been my home for the last seven years because of the personal relationships we cultivate, and it is why I still wake up every day looking forward to being on campus. I hope it helps you make the right decision (which, of course I believe is Carthage!). The givens about the Carthage music program are what you would expect: the absolutely gorgeous campus, the world-class orchestral and music education faculty that will take you under their wings, the proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, and the stellar education students receive here. But here are the things that can’t be measured in numbers and metrics that drew me to Carthage and keep me here. As I mentioned above, the first is the type of people that you will find here. While you’re visiting, be sure to take the time to speak with the current students. You’ll quickly discover that they are incredibly engaged, kind, and interesting people. You’re most likely on campus because you’re interested in a liberal arts education that helps you develop into a well-rounded person, and you’ll see that in abundance on campus. The second reason is that we find a way to help you achieve your goals. Whether you want to go on to a career in music or aspire to become a medical professional, we’ll help you make the best of your time and efforts. Alumni of the orchestra have become nurses, doctors, software engineers, economists, or have gone on to earn advanced degrees in music performance and education. We are committed to a premier program on campus, but while never sacrificing the joy of music making and discovery. Come sit in on a rehearsal and you’ll understand why I’m so proud to be a Carthaginian. We work hard and take what we do seriously, but always with a smile and an encouraging word. Whether music or music education is your major, minor, or simply something that you love to do, we have a place for you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Best of luck!

director of keyboard studies Welcome to Carthage College! Now is an exciting time to join the keyboard studies program as we continue to expand the learning, performance, and career preparation opportunities available to our students. If you are a pianist, organist, or harpsichordist who wants music to be a part of your life and studies we offer several paths to find a fit that is right for you. If you want to focus on performance, we offer a BM in performance and collaborative piano. Perhaps your interest lies in teaching and running your own studio or business. A BM in education or a BA in performance and pedagogy might be the way to go. Are you passionate about science, psychology, animation, or another subject, and want to double major? Then a BA in music might be the perfect fit, or a minor in music. Whatever path is best for you, at Carthage you will have the opportunity to grow and hone your skills in a supportive and collaborative learning environment. The core of our program goes beyond individual weekly lessons. From one-on-one time with your professors and small studio classes, to large group and seminars with input from each of our faculty, we are committed to teaching, challenging, and supporting you as you explore the incredible world of music. If you enjoy collaborating there are opportunities to play for singers, instrumentalists, musicals, jazz band, orchestra, choir, or Christmas Fest. For those who enjoy teaching, there are opportunities to teach in the Carthage Arts Academy. Carthage is home to amazing piano and organ activities. Our keyboard program continues to grow both in terms of our student body and the unique performances offered by our prestigious faculty and guest artists. Our annual Lakeside Piano Festival features performances and master classes by guest artists such as internationally acclaimed pianist and Sony artist Simone Dinnerstein and international performers Carmen Vila and Jorge Federico Osorio. The festival also features a special showcase recital of our piano and organ students. Our students have been accepted to prestigious graduate schools, often with generous scholarships, including the Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, the Cincinnati Conservatory, Mannes School of Music, Berklee College of Music and Rice Music School. Our alumni have gone on to teach in private studios and community

academies and have gone on to leadership roles in arts administration and church music. I hope you take time to get to know our program while you’re here. Please be sure to talk with our current students and faculty to learn what they like most about the keyboard studies program. I think you’ll find that while we provide a very competitive education with outstanding music opportunities, the environment here is foremost supportive of our students—we are a collaborative community not just be-tween faculty and students but among the students themselves. We are committed to helping you reach your full potential as a musician. Feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions. I wish you all the best in your auditions and as you choose the college that’s right for you.
