MUSIC THEATRE Fine Arts Scholarships
director of music theatre studies Welcome to Carthage; we are so excited for you to share your talents with us today! As you visit various schools to decide on your music theatre home for the next few years, you’ll be balancing applications, interviews, the audition – it can all be a bit overwhelming! Know this first: we want YOU to succeed! Know this second: we’re just as obsessed with music theatre as YOU are! We look forward to getting to know you and discuss how Carthage can help you succeed as a human and in the music theatre genre. I also hope that today helps you see part of what makes Carthage special. Of course, there is the gorgeous campus, the world-class faculty, the proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, and the stellar education all students here receive. But I hope your visit also gives you a chance to get to know the type of humans that you will find here at Carthage. When you are on campus and talking to our students, I think that you find they are hungry for knowledge and continually work at getting better at their craft. They truly balance their skill-building coursework with our real-world application curriculum that is truly unique to each student’s needs and skill levels. Carthage faculty members are here to help YOU! Our faculty members have been on Broadway and National Tours; worked Regionally and Internationally; and they have decades of combined professional and teaching experience. Our faculty members are consistently working as directors, performers and producers while teaching you the most up-to-date practices in an ever changing industry. Our Alumni take many different routes after leaving Carthage. Because of our proximity to the Chicago and Milwaukee markets, you can frequently see our alumni on regional stages including Porchlight, Music Theatre Works, Second City, Lyric Opera Chicago and Skylight Music Theatre to name a few. Other alumni can be seen on cruise ships, continuing on to graduate school or taking their knowledge into the classroom! I hope YOU have the best day today full of wonderful experiences and sharing opportunities. Please know that we are also here to answer your questions - if there is something that arises today, or in the weeks ahead as you make your decision to attend Carthage, please let me know how I can help. Break all the legs! You have nothing to prove, only to share! Matthew Hougland Music Theatre Specialist & Assistant Professor of Music mhougland@carthage.edu | 262-551-5975

upcoming productions Something Rotten! April 29-30 & May 5-7 | 7:30 p.m. May 1 | 3 p.m. Wartburg Theatre The Carthage Theatre Department presents Something Rotten, with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick and book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick. This outrageously hilarious and wildly entertaining musical is directed by Professor Martin McClendon with music direction by Matthew Hougland. William Shakespeare was the hottest writer during the Renaissance. Women and men alike wanted him, and wanted to be him. Everyone that is, except Nick Bottom. Nick and his brother Nigel run a theatre troupe too, but their efforts are always overshadowed by Shakespeare. Nick hits his last straw when Shakespeare steals their idea of performing “Richard II” before the troupe has a chance to perform it. In an attempt to overthrow Willy’s fame, Nick pays a soothsayer to predict what the next famous play will be, so he can produce it before the Bard does. The soothsayer reveals that the next big theatrical trend will be: a MUSICAL! Something Rotten’s wild hilarity and never-ending tunes allows for a theatrical experience filled to the brim with joy. Nick and Nigel navigate the writing of a musical, the meaning of love, and the feeling of inferiority, all with a sarcastic edge. Something Rotten! Originally premiered on Broadway in 2015 with an all star cast, including Brian D’Arcy James, Christian Borle, John Cariani, Heidi Blickenstaff and Kate Reinders. With a booming score, intricate characters, and dancing galore, this show will be sure to have you tapping your toes long after the performance is over. Audience members of all ages will enjoy the upbeat and wild energy of this award-winning musical!
