ANTHOLOGY AT THE SCHOOLS Continuing last month’s project, Olhão’s II New Writers Anthology comes back to the schools.

A Academia de Dança do Algarve promoveu “batalhas” de dança, nos estilos «Hip Hop New Style», «Ragga» e «B-Boying», no evento «I Can Beat You», no dia 9 de novembro, no Pavilhão Municipal de Olhão. O júri composto por Vanessa Matias Lopes, Joel Oliveira Rodrigues e B Boy D Arte teve a difícil tarefa de escolher os vencedores nos diferentes estilos, dada a qualidade dos participantes. ALUNOS DA ESFFL NA BULGÁRIA | PROJETO COMENIUS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S STUDENTS IN BULGARIA | COMENIUS PROGRAMME

O Projeto Comenius vai levar Daniela Silva, Mariana Ramos, Rodrigo Reis e Rafael Silva, alunos da ESFFL, à Bulgária, juntamente com mais trinta alunos das mais diversas nacionalidades europeias.

PROJETO COMENIUS O Projeto Comenius, cujos objetivos a longo prazo são aumentar e melhorar a deslocação de alunos pela EU, promovendo uma educação globalizada, vai levar Rafael Silva, Mariana Ramos, Daniela Silva e Rodrigo Reis, alunos da ESFFL, a Razlog, Bulgária, juntamente com mais trinta alunos das mais diversas nacionalidades europeias, nos próximos dias dezassete a vinte e três de novembro, com a coordenação das professoras Teresa Costa e Manuela Grazina.

Este ano, o tema Healthy Body Healthy Mind do projeto visa promover os hábitos alimentares e comportamentos saudáveis, e envolve os quatro alunos de décimo segundo ano num trabalho de grupo onde criarão um logótipo para o tema, um vídeo de apresentação da cidade e da escola para os jovens de outros países, e um cartaz de identificação da sua nacionalidade.

COMENIUS PROGRAMME The Comenius Programme, whose long-term objectives are to increase and improve the movement of students in the EU by promoting a globalized education, will take Rafael Silva, Mariana Ramos, Daniela Silva and Rodrigo Reis, Secondary School’s students, to Razlog, Bulgaria, along with over thirty students from various European nationalities, from 17th to 23rd November, with the coordination of the teachers Teresa Costa and Manuela Grazina.

This year, the theme Healthy Body Healthy Mind of the Programme aims to promote healthy eating habits and behaviors, and involves the four students of the twelfth year in a working group which will create a logo for the theme, a video presentation of the city and school for young people from other countries, and a sign identifying its nationality.

NOVOS AUTORES NAS ESCOLAS | II ANTOLOGIA DE NOVOS AUTORES DE OLHÃO NEW WRITERS AT THE CITY’S SCHOOLS | OLHÃO’S II NEW WRITERS ANTHOLOGY

ANTOLOGIA DE NOVOS AUTORES A Antologia de Novos Autores de Olhão nasceu de uma iniciativa da Casa da Juventude da Câmara Municipal de Olhão com o intuito de revelar e divulgar os talentos da nossa terra e promover a nossa cultura e o nosso património literário.

Lançada em 2011, a primeira edição teve uma forte adesão por parte dos olhanenses, com 57 trabalhos inscritos de 17 autores.

Em 2013, a 2ª edição recebeu 62 trabalhos de 22 autores.

A forte adesão dos autores que responderam a este desafio do Município seria suficiente para comprovar o sucesso desta iniciativa. Mas, a forma como o público a acolheu, supera todas as expetativas. As diversas apresentações (com a presença dos autores) realizadas para o público em geral e para as escolas foram bem recebidas e o público muito participativo. A 1ª edição online ultrapassou as 5000 visualizações e a 2ª já vai em mais de 1000.

Tal como na primeira edição, foram realizadas várias apresentações para o público em geral e neste momento estão a ser dinamizadas sessões na escolas em parceria com a Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares de Olhão.

O aumento do nível de participação, em relação à anterior, confirma a necessidade e o interesse em continuar a dirigir o desafio aos olhanenses para produzirem e divulgarem as suas produções literárias, pelo que já estão abertas inscrições para a próxima edição.

NEW WRITERS ANTHOLOGY Olhão’s New Writers Anthology began as an initiative of Casa da Juventude (Youth House) and the City Hall, in order to reveal and publicize the talents of our city and promote our culture and literary heritage.

The first edition, which was launched in 2011, had a strong adherence in Olhão, with 57 submissions from 17 authors. In 2013, the 2nd edition received 62 works of 22 authors.

The authors’ strong feedback, who responded to the challenge of the municipality, would be enough to prove the success of this initiative. Yet the public’s feedback exceeds all expectations. The various presentations (with the writers’ presence) performed for the general public and schools were very well received and the audience was very participative. The 1st online edition surpassed 5000 views and 2nd already has more than 1000.

As in the first edition, there were several presentations to the general public, and at the moment there are being streamlined sessions in schools in partnership with Olhão’s network of school libraries.

The increased level of participation in relation to the previous edition confirms the need and interest in keeping the challenge going, daring Olhão people to produce and disseminate their literary productions.

Therefore, we are currently open for submissions for the next edition.

“SEN é o tag de Dário Silva, um jovem artista de graffiti que , há quase uma década, transformou as paredes e muros da cidade de Olhão numa imensa galeria onde tem dependurado uma vasta coleção de peças artísticas reveladoras de enorme criatividade e apuro.” Fernando Rafael começa por descrever, assim, o talento deste mês, na publicação que produziu, em sua homenagem, onde registou de forma organizada e numa sequência cronológica, as criações mais significativas produzidas pelo SEN, quer em termos de criações individuais, quer em colaborações com outros artistas.

DÁRIO SILVA AKA SEN WRITER | WRITER ENTREVISTA | INTERVIEW Como descobriste o graffiti?

Como tem sido o teu percurso?

DS: Quando tinha 12 anos, pintava a minha BMX. Todas as semanas mudava-lhe a cor. Um dia sobrou tinta, escrevi o meu nome na parede, e gostei! A partir dai, comecei a comprar latas de tinta, em drogarias.

Mas não ficava tão bem como os trabalhos que eu via, dos outros writers. Descobri mais tarde que não estava a usar as tintas próprias. No graffiti há traços que têm de sair à primeira, e as tintas que eu usava não davam esse efeito. Passei a juntar dinheiro para comprar latas próprias.

DS: Quando comecei a pintar tinha muitos ídolos, que agora acabei por ultrapassar ou começar a pintar com eles. Ganhei o respeito deles com o tempo, porque eles viam que eu era muito dinâmico, mas no início ninguém tem logo atenção dos outros writers. Agora estou a trabalhar com o meu pai, pinto quartos, paredes, coisas dessas. O trabalho é muito irregular.

How did you discover the art of graffiti?

DS: When I was 12, I used to paint my BMX. I changed its colour every week. One day, there was some paint left, so I tried writing my name in a wall, and I liked it! From then on, I started buying paint cans in drugstores. But it wasn’t as good as the other works I saw, from other writers. I later found out I wasn’t using the right paint. In graffiti there are strokes that have to be made on the first try, and the paint I bought wasn’t suited for that. I started saving money for actual spray paint cans.

Como surgiu o nome SEN? DS: Na loja, em Faro, onde comprava as latas comprei uma revista portuguesa de graffiti em que falavam de um writer norte-americano chamado SEEN. Tirei uma letra e comecei a usar esse nome.

How did you come up with the name SEN? DS: At the store in Faro I used to buy paint from, I bought a Portuguese graffiti magazine in which they talked about an American writer named SEEN. I just took a letter off and started using that name.

How has been your journey?

DS: When I started painting I had a lot of idols, that I already surpassed of ended up painting with them. I’ve earned their respect, because they saw I was rather dynamic, but t the beginning no one has a lot of attention from the other writers. Right now I’m working with my father, I paint rooms, walls, stuff like that.

O que te motiva?

DS: Quando pinto estou à procura de novas experiências. Quero experimentar novas estéticas, ver que cores ficam melhor. Muitos pensam que os writers são de esquerda, todos descontentes, revolucionários...

Mas eu não, pinto porque gosto.

What motivates you?

DS: When I paint, I’m looking for new experiences. I want to try new aesthetics, to see what colors are best. Many people think writers are all unhappy anarchists and revolutionaries, but I’m not like that. I paint because I like to.

Qual a tua relação com a comunidade?

Qual a tua ideia para o graffiti em Olhão?

DS: Eu gosto de embelezar a cidade. É uma cidade autêntica. Agradeço aos populares, por me deixarem pintar, e não serem contra o meu trabalho. Eu também sou contra o vandalismo da cidade. No graffiti servimo-nos de paredes velhas, e tornamo-las mais bonitas. No vandalismo, pintam-se espaços públicos, pintam-se estátuas. Estátuas já são arte de outra pessoa, era desrespeitar, estar a pintar por cima.

DS: Olhão é uma das cidades mais pintadas do mundo. Foi a primeira cidade a ter um prédio pintado - As Panteras. Não concordo que se dê paredes específicas para os writers grafitarem. É pô-los à parte. Era fixe fazer-se um meeting de graffiti cá, com writers de renome. Isso ajudava a divulgar a cidade e a dar outra visão do graffiti.

What is your relationship with the community?

What’s your idea for graffiti in Olhão?

DS: I like to beautify the city, Olhão is an authentic city. I have to thank its people for letting me paint, and not being against my work. I’m against vandalism. In graffiti we use old walls, and make them nicer. In vandalism, they paint public spaces, even statues. Statues are another person’s art already, it’s plain disrespectful to paint on it.

DS: Olhão is one of the most painted cities in the world. It was the first city to ever have a painted building - the Panteras building. I don’t agree with giving specific walls for writers to paint, that’s separating them from the community. It would be really cool to make a graffiti meeting here, with known writers. That would help publicize the city and giving graffiti another outlook.

UMA OPINIÃO ALHEIA Texto publicado na secção Juventude, Artes e Ideias, da edição nº 63 (NOV’13) do Cultura.Sul, nas bancas com o Postal e o Público.

Eu gosto de discutir opiniões. É algo que considero importante; pode-se aprender algo com toda a gente, e até o mais ínfimo detalhe pode mudar drasticamente um ponto de vista. E, quem sabe, esse pormenor não mudará o meu? Não custa tentar, estamos cá para aprender.

mentalidade alheia? Ensinam-nos a questionar tudo, não podemos também questionar-nos uns aos outros?

Mas é como dizem: Isto é só a minha opinião.

Representar os alunos, defendendo assim os seus direitos. É também desenvolver e dinamizar atividades para melhorar as condições da escola e dos alunos.

Promover a participação ativa, colaborar nas iniciativas, envolver-se com responsabilidade na atividade letiva, no bom desempenho pedagógico e na discussão de todos os assuntos relevantes.

It should represent the students, thus defending their rights. It also should develop activities to improve the school and the students.

It should promote an active participation, collaborate on initiatives, engage with responsibly in teaching activity, in good performance in teaching, and in discussing all relevant issues.

AN OPINION OF OTHERS I like to discuss opinions . It's something that I consider important; you can learn something from everyone, and even the tiniest detail can drastically change a point of view. And who knows, maybe this detail will change mine. I give it a try, we’re all here to learn.

Mas depois, numa troca de ideias em conversa de ocasião, saltam-me com esta: “São opiniões, cada um tem a sua. Não devias estar a tentar mudar a dos outros, são coisas que não se discutem.”

But then I’m talking with someone, having an exchange of ideas, and they spurt this out: " It’s only an opinion, everyone has theirs. You should not be trying to change the other people’s opinions, they are not supposed to be discussed.”

Ora essa. Muito pelo contrário. Opiniões são para serem discutidas. Vejam, quando me refiro a opiniões, refiro-me a pontos de vista com o nosso cunho de personalidade, mas baseados em factos e com um mínimo de discernimento, não divagações infundadas de mentes confusas. A opinião discutida pode até não mudar, mas a consciencialização de que existe uma mentalidade distinta pode, e deverá, alterar de algum modo a nossa maneira de agir.

Wait, what? Quite the contrary, opinions are supposed to be discussed. See, when I refer to opinions , I refer to points of view with our stamp of personality, but based on facts and with a minimum of judgment, not unfounded ramblings of confused minds. The opinion in discussion might not even change, but the awareness that there is a distinct mindset can, and should , somehow change the way we act.

But how can I discuss with someone that will have serious chances of being offended with the questioning of their ideas? Or someone who considers their opinion so masterful that refuses to defile it with the mentality of others? They teach us to question everything, why can’t we also question each other?

The role of a Student Council should be to help students in their decisions and guide them in their choices.

Defender os direitos dos alunos, melhorar as condições, organizar eventos, promover a melhoria do rendimento escolar. Deverá fazer algo que marque a diferença.

Eu acho que o papel da Associação de Estudantes é ajudar a ter uma escola melhor, ajudando os alunos (tipo os mais velhos ajudarem os mais novos).

Representar todos os alunos e ser um meio de comunicação entre eles e a direção da escola. Deverá ainda procurar dinamizar atividades que agradem ao maior nº de alunos.

I think the role of the Council is to help to have a better school, helping students (like, the older ones helping the younger ones).
