004 St. Jerome in the Woods 31.5 x 25.5 cm An oil painting on metal presenting the image of St. Jerome kneeling in a forest. Its frame is embellished with gilt foliage superimposed on a red-painted frame, which is also veneered with another gilt frame, emphasizing the contours of the picture. The painting followed the Portuguese school of 17th century Baroque, which was focused on aristocratic and religious themes. The figure of the saint is half naked in solitude within the woods, with his red garment covering the lower half of his body. This represents his hermitage as he devouted himself to the translation of the Scriptures from the Hebraic and Greek languages to the lingua franca of his age, Latin. Thus, the Holy Book became accessible then to the literate and seasoned as the “Vulgate,” that means, revealed or made known. It is for the fact that Hebrew and Greek, in Jerome’s era, had become obsolete language for the people of Rome and of the vast empire.

012 A Battle Scene 97 cm x 133 cm Painted between 17th and 18th century, this oil on canvas piece is done in the French school of painting. The painting recounts the history of the Reconquista (Reconquering), which is the seven centuries-long war between Spanish kingdoms and Moors from A.D. 8th to 15th century. Interestingly it encapsulates the beginning and end of the war with two iconographic

representations. On the one hand is the waving of a flag with red and white stripes. This resembles the colours associated with King Pelayo, founder of the monarchy of Asturias and who began the Reconquista. On the other hand, afar in the background is the mountain-city of Granada. Located in Andalusia, it was the last front of the Moorish forces as defeated by the re-unified Catholic kingdoms of Aragon and Castile in 1492 (Hazard, 1975; Reconquista, 2015; Watts, 1913). www.casadememoria.com
Aesthetically, the dynamic battlefield between Spanish warriors and Moors dominates the foreground. The horizontal arrangement of the scene gives the painting a heavier visual weight. This is balanced by the perpendicularly positioned tree at the centre, painted with green, red, and ochre-toned leaves and burnt sienna-coloured trunks. The horse-riding Moor pierces his spear to the back through the stomach of a Spanish warrior, which depiction is a horrifying spectacle. The veered gaze of both men and horses toward this scene increases focus to this barbaric presentation. This piece recollects the eventually-judged barbarism of the exoticized Moorish “other,” which defeat spurred Spain’s extreme religious uniformity under Catholicism, with strong roots of Inquisition and expulsion of Moors and Jews from Iberia.

68 x 52 cm A late 18th century art piece done through oil on canvas. This piece influenced by the English school of art presents a dynamic vista of a group of people accentuated by the imminent conflict between two men. The scenario, to further elaborate, illustrates diversity and fluidity of body movements from the individuals who seem to be having a countryside social gathering before the discord transpired. Such thing could have arisen perhaps when one of the two coated men became hot-headed and ego stepped into the scene. In here, we see the blue-coated man, who unsheathed his sword and toppled the beveragefilled table, being held back by the red-coated figure. His foe, on the other hand, is depicted as being pulled back by a woman so as to prevent a tragic confrontation between the two. Separating them are the startled people, as well as the pup, enjoined in the gathering. The artist of this piece utilized light, vibrant and dark hues, with the last two aforesaid predominating the lower half portion, and contrasted by the mixtures of white and gradients of blue at the upper right section.
