one band, one vision

The Artane School Of Music Senior Ensembles The Artane Wind Ensemble The Artane Wind Ensemble was formed in 2000. The ethos of the Artane Wind Ensemble is to offer graduates of the Artane Band (wind, brass and percussion players) an opportunity to study, perform and experience music specifically composed for the wind ensemble medium and to present newly composed international compositions.

The Artane Big Band The Artane Big Band is only open to those students who play the following instruments: Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar or Piano. This ensemble has only seventeen seats at any one time. The band rehearses a wide variety of repertoire from the roaring 40s right through to modern day funk rock. It is a very specialised ensemble as each member must be capable of some improvisational skills. The art of improvisation is a key factor to the success of this ensemble and is a skill that each student acquires through their experience in the big band.

The Artane Senior Band The Artane Senior Band was founded in 1988 by a group of past members of the Artane Boys' Band, following an invitation to play at the 100th anniversary of the Band's association with Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (GAA). The Artane Senior Band provides an opportunity for former members of the Artane Boys’ Band and Artane Bands to keep in touch with friends and to continue their musical enjoyment, education and performance.

The Artane School of Music System The Recorder & Beginners Ensembles

The Junior Band

The Artane Band

Our recorder ensemble is open to all students from second class onwards. Here each new student to the School learns to play the recorder. It is their first experience of performing with others of a similar age, and teaches the basic skills, such as blowing, breathing, hand positions and general hand eye coordination and a basic level of music reading.

The Artane Junior Band continues the process of ensemble training. In the Artane Junior Band the student now learns the skill of following more advanced directions given by the conductor, the purpose of which is to help the band play more musically as a unit.

The Artane Band is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the Artane School of Music. It is an educational and a working ensemble. The educational role encompasses the development of all the musical, professional and personal skills required to perform and march at the highest level.

When the skills and techniques of the Beginners Ensemble have been mastered to the appropriate level the students are assessed by their tutors and the Director of Music and will progress to the next stage of their musical training in the Artane Band.

The working role of the band consists of performances on several levels. Corporate entertainment may be as a marching or concert band. Most famous for their performances in Croke Park, the Artane Band also perform at an average of sixty events a year.

The Beginners Ensemble is where each young musician will be matched to an instrument, with the aim of developing their skills and confidence, with the object of meeting the standard required for entry to the Junior Ensemble.
