The Irreverent and Witty Trocks are Back

C

Broadway lofts. The Trocks, as the dancers are affectionately known, quickly garnered a major critical essay by Arlene Croce in The New Yorker which, combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice, established the company as an artistic and popular success.

ONSIDERED THE WORLD’S FOREMOST ALL-MALE COMIC BALLET COMPANY, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are returning to Santa Barbara by popular demand on January 25th at The Granada Theatre.

Founded in 1974, the troupe takes an enthusiastic and playful approach to traditional classical ballet. In parody form and en travesti, they’re known for their razorsharp wit and breathtaking pointe work. Now celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary season, the company has grown from its roots in off-off Broadway into a global touring company.

The Trocks also are a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. The company has participated in dance festivals in Turkey, Holland, San Luis Potosi, Madrid, Montreal, Spoleto, Turin, and Vienna. There have been television appearances as varied as a Shirley MacLaine special, The Dick Cavett Show, What’s My Line?, and a BBC Omnibus special on the world of ballet, hosted by Jennifer Saunders. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures in association with Pacific Pride Foundation and UCSB Department of Theater and Dance.

Limón Dance Company Just two days later, UCSB Arts & Lectures will return to The Granada to present Limón Dance Company. Celebrating more than 75 years of dance, the Company is bringing a program of new and reconstructed works to the Granada Theatre on January 27th. Under Artistic Director Dante Puleio’s guidance, who danced for the company for more than a decade, the company will present a program of mid 20th century dance for the contemporary artist and the audience.

The program also features “Border Crossings,” a tribute to borderland artists who have been largely erased from dance history, and includes guest dancers from the Santa Barbara Dance Theater.

Five days set aside to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

HE HOPES, DREAMS, AND WORK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. will be the focus during five days of events for the 17th Annual Holiday Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara, 2024’s theme is “The time is always ripe to do right,” a Martin Luther King, Jr. statement from 1963, made by him in Birmingham, Alabama.

The five days begin Thursday, January 11th, with a substantial portion of the holiday's events taking place Monday, January 15th, beginning at De la Guerra Plaza, 20 E. De la Guerra St., in Santa Barbara and following with programs in and around the Arlington Theatre. The in-person multi-day event will honor King, the only individual in the U.S. to have a Federal Holiday declared in his name.

Two of the events will also honor local leaders, with the De la Guerra events dedicated to Derrick Curtis, a well known dancer, teacher, and producer and the Arlington Theatre event dedicated to the memory of former MLKSB Board member, poet laureate, author, and activist Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, who passed away in November.

The program at the Arlington Theatre will highlight her accomplishments and celebrate her life and how she brought poetry into the lives of students in Santa Barbara County.

The community will have an opportunity to recall Sojourner’s impact during an event following the Arlington Theatre gathering.

An additional celebration of King will take place at the end of January in the form of an exhibition, Capturing and Recapturing, by photo journalist Santi Visalli at Comunity Arts Workshop. The 13-day exhibition features photos Visalli ‘captured’ at the Vietnam War Protest March in NYC in 1967. He shot them on an assignment for a magazine out of Milan, Italy.

The Arlington Theatre: MLKSB Program From 11am -12:30pm at the Arlington Theatre there will be a 90-minute program dedicated to the memory of Sojourner Kincaid Rolle (SKR).

The program will include Keynote Speaker, UCSB Environmental Justice Professor, Dr. David Pellow, a collection of top awarded poems and essays read by the children who penned them.

This was Sojourner’s passion poetry.

Miriam Dance will direct the program and be a soloist along with Lois Mahalia, the Riviera Ridge School Children’s Choir, a gospel choir, and jazz music.

Reception to Honor Sojourner Kincaid Rolle: The audience will be invited to a Celebration of Life for Sojourner following the presentation at the Arlington Theatre at First United Methodist Church, 305 E. Anapamu Street (1:30 to 3:30pm).

Cruise Ships Can Offer Sustainable Benefits For Area Marine Rerserves

V

ISITING CRUISE SHIPS ARE A POTENTIAL SOURCE OF REVENUE for Santa Barbara’s coastal environment. Historically all ships have been welcomed with open arms for their economic value, especially cruise ships.

What has been overlooked is the possible contribution they could make to the sustainability of the local ecology, nature reserves, our Whale Heritage Site, and to environmental stewards.

Currently all docking fees have landed in the pockets of the Waterfront Department, which is deserving for their work, but, perhaps some of these funds should be allocated to sustaining the coastal environment. About 30 cruise ships dock in the harbor during the less busy tourism season, with revenues totaling about $700,000, which does not include the monies spent in Santa Barbara by passengers. Perhaps the city should consider allowing 32 ships to dock here, with the additional revenue going to sustain and protect the environment.

Keepers, and the Chumash Tribes, to name a few. Protective agencies are plentiful as well, with the Navy, Coast Guard, and Harbor Patrol ever present to enforce regulations.

Our harbor is home to a stunning number of ocean research organizations like Ocean Futures, NOAA, UCSB, and environmentally conscious support organizations like the Maritime Museum, the Sea Center, Heal the Ocean, Santa Barbara Channel

Visit Santa Barbara, Downtown Santa Barbara, and the South Coast Chamber of Commerce have worked diligently to facilitate the growth of this industry, with the environment in mind. Hopefully these organizations can continue to play a part in the ongoing development of the Waterfront and its mission.

Definition of Antisemitism Creates Challenges at ADL

A

CLAIM BY THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE’S JONATHAN GREENBLATT, CEO, that opposing the state of Israel and its policies is the same as antisemitism has disenfranchised some staff members of the ADL, it was recently reported in the Guardian.

"Even before the latest Israel-Hamas war, the conflation of antisemitism and anti-Zionism has increasingly inflected the debate around the bounds of legitimate protest, with the ADL playing a vocal role. Now, news reports show a troubling surge of antisemitism, with bomb threats against synagogues and antisemitic graffiti. The ADL has said antisemitic incidents in the US have risen 388% since 7 October. But its data is difficult to make sense of, precisely because of questions around how the ADL defines antisemitism,” Jonathan Guyer and Tom Perkins wrote in a Guardian article on January 5th.

"And tensions continue to ignite between Greenblatt and ADL staff. At least two employees who spoke to the Guardian have quit in response to its overt emphasis on pro-Israel advocacy since the Israeli offensive on Gaza began, building on a pattern of departures from the organization. But the ADL has only doubled down on initiatives defending Israel and the policies of the Israeli government.

It has welcomed a controversial congressional resolution that defined anti-Zionism as antisemitism, and it has called on law enforcement to investigate student activist groups for providing “material support” to Hamas, which the U.S. government has designated as a terrorist organization,” they also stated in the January 5th Guardian article. ~ VOICE Staff

Recently, environmental groups have urged the Water Front Commission to review the current plan of about 30 cruise ships docking in Santa Barbara due to environmental concerns. There are a range of voices that want to reduce or eliminate the cruise ships.

Environmental needs and concerns are important and appropriate and improved regulations should always be ongoing. Committees have formed and then appeared before the Commission and now the Commission will be appearing before the City Council with their ideas and recommendations.

Hopefully new possibilities and positive change will come out of the meeting. We are hopeful that the Council will consider expanding the number of cruise ships so that a portion of the proceeds can go toward protecting and preserving our ocean and land reserves.

A New App to Connect with the City Called "SB Connect”

"SB Connect is a new way to communicate with the City of Santa Barbara and we look forward to the efficiencies it will bring to our departments and our citizens. In addition to tracking the status of your report, SB Connect allows you to review other reports in your neighborhood and see what the City has done to resolve them. This is an exciting step as we continue to modernize our processes into the future,” said Justin Cure, the City’s Information Technology Director.

This new access for reporting issues, is available in both English and Spanish. A person may report potholes or graffiti, all from their smartphones or tablets. Please note that SB Connect should not be used for emergency reporting. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Housing Project Proposed for La Cumbre Plaza Macy's Site

PROPOSED HOUSING PROJECT TO REPLACE MACY’S at La Cumbre Plaza, named "The Neighborhood at State & Hope,” will be the subject of discussion at an open house on January 17th, in the Grace Fisher Foundation Inclusive Arts Clubhouse in La Cumbre Plaza. The open house will be hosted by the holders of the preliminary application.

The proposed mixed-use development project is located on an 8.7-acre site, and plans call for the construction of 642 rental housing units including studios, one-, two-, and a few three-bedroom units. The proposal plans for 54 of these homes indicate that they will be dedicated to very low- and moderateincome households, "The Neighborhood at State & Hope" proposal allocates five percent of its housing units to very low-income households, entitling it to certain waivers under the State Density Bonus Law. In compliance with this law, the project has requested a waiver to exceed the City Charter’s 60-foot height limit by 16.5 feet to accommodate the increased density allowed under State Density Bonus Law.

by Tamara Skov and Shannon Dalton. Jackie Quinn, the founder of Quinn Fiduciary Services, will remain involved with the firm to ensure a seamless transition over the next several months. Carpinteria Bluffs Resort Moves Toward Review Hearing

TORY POLES REPRESENTING DOZENS OF BUILDINGS proposed for construction on the Carpinteria Bluffs have been erected to launch the public review process for a large-scale resort project. A development group has proposed building a luxury resort and affordable housing where Tee Time driving range, an organic farm, and acres of open space currently exist. The two parcels targeted for development total 27.5 acres of coastal open space and span the Carpinteria Bluffs from the Harbor Seal Overlook to Carpinteria Avenue.

“We think there is no good reason to allow massive development on the Carpinteria Bluffs. This type of luxury resort, spa, restaurant, and destination events center immediately adjacent to a nature preserve represents the opposite of thoughtful community planning,” said Patrick Crooks, Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs President.

“Considerate planning respects compatibility with neighboring uses and protects our coastal resources, and we don’t see those principles honored with a proposal to bring so much construction and commercial activity to the Carpinteria Bluffs.”

The project’s applicant team has invited all interested parties to the Community Open House on Wednesday, January 17th, from 5 to 7pm to discuss the project elements. This gathering is open to the public and will be located in La Cumbre Plaza, at the Grace Fisher Foundation Inclusive Arts Clubhouse (across from Williams-Sonoma).

The proposed development includes 56 buildings totaling 178,000 square feet. The resort includes two large hotel lodges, 40 bungalows, a restaurant, spa, two pools, and an events center. Also proposed are 41 apartment units mixed between 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms.

Funny, incisive, modern, and brutally honest

FTER WATCHING YORGOS LANTHIMOS’S THE LOBSTER AND THE FAVOURITE, I thought I’d be prepared for Poor Things.

But I wasn’t. How lucky for all of us to be surprised with this bizarre comedic masterpiece, led by a no-holds-barred Emma Stone as Bella Baxter.

There was a time in Hollywood films when women were portrayed as brash, unapologetic and independent. That was before July of 1934, when Hollywood began censoring its own films with the establishment of the “Hays Code.” The main victims were women, who were represented to be, for the most part, subservient to men, in order to uphold “the sanctity of the institution of marriage”. Films couldn’t show nudity, childbirth, “white slavery” (as prostitution was called), and they couldn’t even say the word “pregnant.”

The “Code” ended in 1968, but there’s still a certain inertia in Hollywood to avoid offending anyone in the interest of ticket sales. In this context, Lanthimos’s ideas are quite refreshing. As Harry “the Cynic” Astley (Jerrod Carmichael) says in Poor Things, “Polite society will destroy you!”

Poor Things throws convention and everything else out the window, including the bath water and the baby, beginning with Robbie Ryan’s cinematography, which gives a feeling of vertigo and keeps you off-balance.

Bella speaks her mind… whether she’s asking an exhausted Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) to do some more “furious jumping” (what Duncan calls “siesta time”) or telling him, “Stop talking, as your sounds make Bella angry.” She also calls her father, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) “God.” It’s as if Lanthimos wants to equally offend every group.

Bella reminds me of Baby Doll (Elia Kazan, 1956). Baby Doll Meighan is also childish, sexual, and in charge of the men in her life. The Catholic Legion of Decency did not like that, and Cardinal Francis J. Spellman even condemned the film from the pulpit of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Yet times are changing. And still, many will find Poor Things offensive, which is perhaps a sign of its honesty; that it’s a work of art that doesn’t leave anyone indifferent.

The film grows on you, as Bella “adventures” in a sumptuous steam-punk world (designed by Shona Heath and James Price). The magical sets of Lisbon and Paris or the fantastical steamship reminds us that this is a fairy tale, and not to take it too seriously.

The costumes (by Holly Waddington) are equally enthralling, including what could be the best “sexy Snow White” Halloween costume.

The dialogue is just as beautiful, poetic and incisive. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tony McNamara’s script, based on Alasdair Gray’s novel, wins the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

It’s easy to fall in love with Bella’s brutal honesty. Through her eyes, we experience what it’s like to be a woman learning to live in this world, albeit in a very unconventional way.

Parking Lots Re-open

THURSDAY, JANUARY 4TH: Santa Barbara’s Waterfront department staff has been working since last Thursday to clean up the parking lots overrun with the tidal surge, sand, and debris. It was mainly a cleanup action. The parking machines survived the water surge and the landscaping held on in the back of the lot towards the street. It was hours of hand labor and the use of large and small loaders.

RMOURED WITH A PASSION FOR OPERA, Maestro Nir Kabaretti, Music and Artistic Director of the Santa Barbara Symphony, has fashioned a program of opera headliners - The Ride of the Valkyries - which will be performed at The Granada Theatre on Saturday, January 20th at 7:30pm and Sunday, January 21st at 3pm.

“There will be a lot of moments in this concert where people will say, I know that from somewhere, or I recognize that,” Kabaretti shared in a conversation with Voice.

Whether or not you are an opera lover, the entertaining program, which is full of deception, romance, and drama will let imaginations run wild.

“After graduating from the Music school in Vienna, my first work opportunities came from the opera world, and I was an employee for seven years in opera houses between Vienna, the Royal Opera in Madrid, and the Opera in Florence. Opera is a very important part of my musical DNA,” he recalled.

A best of the best of treasured opera hits, The Ride of the Valkyries’ stage will include Symphony musicians as well as soloists from Opera Santa Barbara’s upcoming Il Trovatore.

Burnishing Kabaretti’s longstanding reputation as a conductor in the international opera world, the concert will also demonstrate his ongoing commitment to collaboration and community.

While the first opera Kaberetti conducted was Mozart’s Magic Flute, he turned to the opera that was his first experience conducting Wagner for the upcoming program’s title - The Ride of the Valkyries.

He recalled with excitement, “Valkyries was my first Wagner experience... That was in the Royal Opera House in Madrid, Spain. It was by far the biggest orchestra I’ve ever conducted. It was huge, over a hundred musicians in the pit, an incredible musical experience with a phenomenal cast. Even if you never saw a Wagner opera in a live performance, you will still recognize the theme of this Ride, you know, some people have it on their phone as a ringtone.”

In that five hour production in Madrid, one of the star artists he worked with was Plácido Domingo.

As chief visionary and planner at the Symphony, Kabaretti, leader of one of the eight resident companies at the Granada Theatre, engaged Kostis Protopapas of Opera Santa Barbara as he considered soloists.

Protopapas was on board to ask the soloists from his upcoming production to expand their Santa Barbara appearances to include the Symphony’s January opera performances.

“Collaborations are adding weight to what we do,” Kabaretti explained. “That’s really a very important thing to us as an organization, to collaborate with other artistic institutes here in town and also out of town, and it Continued on page 15

Winter Cruise Season

It seems the Winter cruise ship season has indeed begun. The Waterfront Department schedules cruise ship visits during the Fall, Winter, and Spring and typically does not schedule visits during the busier summer months of June, July, and August. The City of Santa Barbara’s website lists the details for 2024’s Winter months including dates, duration of stay, names of ships, and the cruise lines. A quick look revealed that only seven cruise ships are scheduled, although changes are possible. The website’s listing for the Winter/Spring months revealed three cruise ships in January, one in March, and three in April. After that, none are scheduled until September. All will arrive and depart the same day with a passenger capacity from under one thousand to just under four.

Our first visiting cruise ship on Sunday was the Viking Sky, one of the luxury ships in the Viking Ocean Cruise’s fleet. Christened in Tromsø, Norway, a popular destination for viewing the Northern Lights, she has a length of 745 feet and a beam of 94, and accommodates 930 passengers (not including crew) in all-veranda staterooms with views. She is classed as a small cruise ship allowing docking access unavailable to larger ships. The Viking Sky was launched in March 2016, delivered to Viking Ocean Cruises in January 2017, embarking on her maiden voyage the next month, and has been in service almost since then.

A single sentence on the Viking Ocean Cruise website peeked my curiosity. It stated that the Viking Sky had experienced an engine failure while sailing from Tromsø to Stavanger in Norway in March of 2019. A visit to the ever present (and infamous!) sleuth Sherlock Google opened a few doors. The incident, at the time covered by international news, happened in the Norwegian Sea a result of a complete engine failure in extremely heavy seas. Tossed about by gale force winds and 50 foot swells, the ship drifted to within 328 feet of being grounded on rocky shores. Dramatic rescues were underway airlifting passengers one-by-one onto helicopters hovering above the wave battered ship.

Evacuated were 479 people leaving approximately 900 people still on board when the weather finally cleared allowing the ship to dock.

RRRR!! OUR FIRST CHILLY WEEKEND OF 2024 saw Santa Barbara’s harbor and waterfront as crowded as in the heat of summer. Lines of bundled up diners waited patiently outside of Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery and Chad’s Cafe’ on Cabrillo Boulevard hungry for breakfast … and a seat! At the entrance to Stearns Wharf, cars waited to grab a parking ticket as pedestrians walked leisurely in and out between crowded sidewalks during Sunday’s weekly Art Walk. Could there have been a greater crowd despite the unusual chill? Lo and behold, after one glance offshore the answer appeared!

SPECIAL BENEFIT PERFORMANCE of Love Letters, starring actors Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross, will be presented by the Ensemble Theatre Company on January 27th at the New Vic Theatre. Baxter and Gross played husband and wife together on the hit TV sitcom, Family Ties.

"It is truly a special moment for ETC as we welcome Meredith Baxter, an amazing member of our Board of Directors, back to our stage along with Michael Gross for this special performance of Love Letters to benefit our theater company,” said Scott DeVine, ETC's executive director. “Their chemistry on stage is undeniable as they bring A.R. Gurney’s words to life in this unforgettable one-time performance."

A timeless play, Love Letters unfolds through a series of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences.

SB Public Library Awarded Grant for Sustainability Initiatives

HE SANTA BARBARA PUBLIC LIBRARY (SBPL) IS ONE OF FIFTEEN California local library systems selected to receive first-ever funding from the State Library to support projects focused on sustainability, climate resilience, and community engagement for the 2023-2024 year.

Projects receiving funding through the new Sustainable California Libraries grants will focus on climate education, environmentfocused civic engagement, water conservation, air quality, energy efficiency, reducing waste and supporting local climate action and resilience plans. The grant will enable the library to offer programming and workshops that will help the public engage in practices that complement the City’s

The production will take place on Saturday, January 27th at 2pm at The New Vic Theatre located at 33 W. Victoria Street in Santa Barbara.

OW IN ITS 15TH YEAR, THE AUDUBON PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS is now open for submissions until February 28th. This year the awards have also announced a new Birds in Landscapes prize, focused on the relationship between birds and the places they live, and how birds connect with their larger surroundings.

When Has Inflation Fallen This Fast?

HEN WAS THE LAST TIME inflation rates declined this quickly? You guessed right if you said the Great Recession.

Calculated Risk’s colorful graph of various inflation indicators (blue-gray bars are recessions) shows the history of Core CPI (red line) and Core PCE (green line) inflation from January 1990 among others. Core prices are without volatile food and energy prices.

What does that tell us about the current drop in inflation? Maybe there’s a danger of it falling too far, too fast as well, fulfilling the prophecies of some that still see a looming recession. This inflation surge was worse than during the Great Recession (thickest blue bar) because of the COVID pandemic, per this graphic picture.

Only the 1980-81 recessions caused a sharper inflation decline. But that was because then Fed Chair Paul Volcker raised interest rates into the double digits to combat double-digit inflation caused by the 1970’s oil crisis-fed stagflationary spiral.

In fact, we are already in the Fed’s two percent target range. The Personal Consumption Expenditure Price (PCE) Index is already at 1.9 percent and Core CPI Prices at 2.0 percent over the past six months.

And what Fed officials seldom admit is the two percent inflation target isn’t a reliable target. Why? Because no one really knows what the true inflation

By Harlan Green rate is! Yes, there is no measure among the varicolored measures above that is an accurate indicator of inflation as economists such as former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke have admitted. It could have already hit zero percent in some sectors of our economy. Hence economists consult many different indexes to arrive at a mean value.

And consumers may already believe this, since the most recent inflation assessment coming from the New York Fed says their expectations are declining fast as well.

Consumers expect the inflation rate to fall to three percent, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That’s the lowest anticipated one-year ahead inflation rate since January 2021, in the NY Fed’s ongoing survey of consumer expectations.

Median inflation expectations declined at all horizons, falling to 3.0 percent from 3.4 percent at the one-year ahead horizon, to 2.6 percent from 3.0 percent at the three-year ahead horizon, and to 2.5 percent from 2.7 percent at the five-year ahead horizon.

Maybe some Fed Governors, such as Michele Bowman are beginning to believe this as well who have studied the history of inflation.

Energy and food prices are falling, for starters. The U.S. is even outproducing the OPEC countries and Russia, which may not be the best way to win the inflation war. But it could convince the Fed to begin to lower short term rates sooner and preserve this recovery.

No one really wants to cause another recession, right?

Blending community, creativity, and traditions through ice cream

ATCH LOCAL ‘CREAMINALS’ waiting in line at Your Choice Thai Cuisine hoping to snatch a scoop of something sweet that’s locally made and unusually flavored. It’s ice cream! Bringing community and culture together, these folks are waiting to experience Creaminal’s ice cream social, called No Sad Sundaes.

Creaminal, which began over a decade ago, was founded by Piti Sukavivatanachai and his wife Katy Dao. Piti grew up in Santa Barbara with his parents owning the local, family run restaurant, Your Choice Thai Cuisine on upper State Street.

Later, he came back to Santa Barbara to help out at the family restaurant. Wanting to ease his mother’s workload, he started making the coconut ice cream that was offered at the restaurant. As he became more comfortable, his experimentation with with different flavors driven by his love for ice cream began.

“Creaminal’s ice cream socials ‘No Sad Sundaes’ brings diverse people together,” said Sukavivatanachai. “The experience appeals to various age groups and backgrounds, providing a space for celebration or solace. The nostalgic nature of ice cream creates a unique connection among people.”

While there is almost always a line during No Sad Sundaes, it moves quickly. As soon as your through it, you select a sundae.

Usually there are four flavors to choose from. After watching the Creaminal team make yours, it’s time to find a seat.

As you enter the dinning area sweet aromas and smiles are everywhere.

Chatter fills the restaurant as groups of all ages and backgrounds converse with one another, eating with neon spoons, and sitting in amber chairs, bonding over tasty treats.

Scoop or pint, you’ll want to come back because Creaminal’s flavors are always changing. They sometimes even influence Sukavivatanachai’s decision of sundae choices for the ice cream social.

“When planning our weekly menu, I aim for at least two “out there” sundaes and a “safe option” for newcomers. The process involves recreating moments or feelings and drawing inspiration from drinks or dishes to create the sundaes. At the end of the day, I’m just having fun with the process,” explained Piti.

“Creaminal is not just about ice cream; it’s a community, it’s a blend of tradition and creativity. We’re having so much fun doing this and are so thankful we get to do this for all these years in Santa Barbara.”

at Elverhøj Museum of History & Art

AREN BIT VEJLE, AN INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED PSALIGRAPHER, is being honored with an exhibition at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art. The debut of Poetry in Paper will be celebrated with an opening reception on Saturday, January 20th, from 4 to 6pm. The public is invited and refreshments will be served, with no charge for admission.

Translated literally, psaligraphy is the art of drawing with scissors and paper.

Works are formed from a large, continuous piece of paper and cut with only a small pair of scissors. It is a slow art of painstaking patience that demands the utmost concentration and a steady hand.

Vejle creates images of air and paper.

Her magical cuttings are rooted in a tradition that has known a long journey through history, beginning in the first century, when paper was first invented by the Chinese. In fact, the Chinese started cutting in paper before they used it for writing. The art of psaligraphy has developed differently throughout the world, but is particularly rooted in Chinese and other Asian cultures, and also in Bit’s native country of Denmark.

This exhibition takes the viewer into a rare artistic experience as Vejle tells magical stories with her scissors. There is a great degree of humor in her world of imagery; humor and the ability to identify joy in small things. Just as often, though, she confronts serious themes intended to cause involvement and reflection. Her works are captivating, evoking both astonishment and inspiration.

Exhibition programming will include a paper cutting workshop with celebrated Danish artist, Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen at the Museum on March 3rd, at 11am. To register visit, www.elverhoj.org. Space is limited.
