Black Violin’s Impossible Tour

UNIQUE MASH-UP OF CLASSICAL, HIP HOP, ROCK, AND R&B WITH A MESSAGE – the classically-trained string duo Black Violin will perform at the Granada Theatre on Tuesday, January 28th at 7pm in a UCSB Arts & Lectures presentation.

Black Violin fuses the sounds of today with classical virtuosity. Their new album, Take the Stairs, was released in November to widespread acclaim, landing coveted spots at the top of the Classical, Crossover, and Hip Hop and R&B charts. Adding DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes to the lineup, they’re bringing their genre-busting sound to Santa Barbara on the Impossible Tour.

The Duo’s latest studio album, Take the Stairs, includes singles Showoff, One Step and Impossible is Possible. A top-charting album, it debuted at

Black Violin is composed of classically trained violist Wil Baptiste and violinist Kev Marcus.

The duo, from South Florida, began playing together in their high school orchestra class.

After attending separate colleges, Kev and Wil reunited and decided to combine their classical training and love for hip-hop music; establishing a distinguished, genre-bending sound that has often been described as “classical boom.”

The Impossible Tour is bringing high energy performances to cities across the nation. The band spent the latter half of 2018 and beginning of 2019 touring, writing, and recording new music. The Impossible Tour ramped up in January, shortly after wrapping up their successful 2018 Classical Boom Tour, which consisted of more than 90 concerts and included back to back sold out performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Black Violin’s Impossible Tour spreads the message that anything is possible and there are no limits to what one can achieve, regardless of circumstance. The focus is positivity and encouragement. “When you come to a Black Violin concert, there are so many people in the audience experiencing something together,” shared Wil Baptiste. “To me, that’s what our show does, it brings people together. Not only that, you’re being inspired, you’re being uplifted, you’re able to see something you probably have never seen before.”

Black Violin’s last record, Stereotypes, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover

Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard R&B Chart.

NPR praised the album and band, saying, “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.”

Creative collaborations include Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, Lil Wayne, and Alicia Keys. In 2016, Black Violin composed music for FOX’s hit TV series Pitch, and the group has made appearances on HBO’s Ballers, The Tonight Show, The Wendy Williams Show, The Ellen Show, and the 2016 Heisman Trophy Presentation on ESPN. Black Violin are advocates for educational outreach and were announced as Turnaround Artists for Mary B. Bethune Elementary School in their hometown of Broward County, FL. Turnaround Arts, a national education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, infuses arts into struggling schools to support overall reform efforts. Founded by President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2012, the program partners schools with music instrument grants, arts supplies, professional development, and musicals and pairs each school with an artist to provide mentorship, inspiration, and support for the school’s journey in the program. Turnaround Artists include Elton John, Edward Norton, and Yo-Yo Ma, among other highly acclaimed members of the arts community. Additionally, Black Violin continues to perform for more than 100,000 students annually throughout North America and Europe.

Arts Adventures Program

LACK VIOLIN will participate in A&L’s Arts Adventures program, performing in an assembly for Santa Barbara County students at the Granada Theatre during their visit.

A&L launched the Arts Adventures program in 2016-2017, transporting nearly 1,500 school children from local and neighboring districts to Santa Barbara’s Granada Theatre to witness a live performances from visiting artists and speakers. The new and engaging programs, along with the bus transportation, are at no cost to the participating schools. The inaugural event was with astronaut Captain Scott Kelly, who inspired students from grades four to six with stories and photos from life on the International Space Station. This season so far, A&L has partnered with numerous schools and age ranges for performances with National Geographic wildlife photographer Joel Sartore and the renowned company Dance Theatre of Harlem.

In 2017-2018, A&L initiated a program with the UCSB Office of Education Partnerships to provide campus experiences for Lompoc students. After partaking in the Arts Adventures program, these visiting schools are transported to the UCSB campus for lunch, tours, and STEM activities led by UCSB students.

SBIFF to Honor Brad Pitt as 2020 Maltin Modern Master

N THE WORLD OF MODERN FILM, very few names are more recognizable than the name Brad Pitt and his contributions to the industry as both an actor and producer can hardly be overstated.

It is because of his commitment to the art form and his unshakeable work ethic that he will be receiving the prestigious Maltin Modern Master Award at the 35th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on January 22nd. Pitt is best known for his roles in Simon Kinberg’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Aaron Sorkin’s Moneyball, for which he was also a producer, and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. In 2019, he delivered landmark performances as Major Roy McBride in James Gray’s Ad Astra and as stuntman Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, for which he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a supporting role. Pitt also heads up Plan B Entertainment, the production company that gave us The Departed, Vice, Moonlight, and 12 Years a Slave.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pitt remained humble in his sentiments about the awards he may win, and has already won, for his 2019 films, “The goal is for the film to land, to speak to someone Wednesday, January 22nd whether it’s now or a decade from 8pm, Arlington Theatre now. I find chasing it [awards] is

actually a disservice to the purity of your telling a story, and a shackling thing to focus on.”

The Maltin Modern Master Award is the highest accolade given at the SBIFF. It was created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry. On the night of the awards ceremony at Arlington Theatre, Pitt will sit down with long-time SBIFF moderator and film critic Leonard Maltin, the award’s namesake, to discuss his career and the role that film plays in modern culture.

Previous recipients of the award include Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, and Clint Eastwood.

“Brad Pitt wears the mantle of Movie Star with good grace. He’s been giving great performances for several decades, but he makes it look so easy that I fear he’s been Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood taken for granted,” Maltin said in Abreviated Filmography The Curious Case of Benjamin a news release.

NE THE MOST INDEPENDENT AND CREATIVE ACTORS IN THE BUSINESS, Laura Dern has forged her own path in Hollywood while taking artistic risks and making a significant contribution to the film industry, which is why she will be receiving the Cinema Vanguard Award on January 21st at the 35th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Her most recent performances in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women delighted audiences and put her first in the running for the accolade this year. After the award is presented to Dern, Deadline’s Chief film critic Pete Hammond, Laura Dern will conduct an interview and moderate a Q&A session.

“My roles in Marriage Story and Little Women are both supporting parts, but the movies don’t work without them,” Dern explained during an interview with Fortune magazine this week. “Marmee is the anchor of her family, and in a lot of ways, Nora is the anchor for Scarlett Johansson’s character in Marriage Story.”

A three-time Academy Award nominee and winner of both an Emmy and a Golden Globe, Dern is best known for her role as Ellie Sattler in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and, more recently, as Vice Admiral Holdo in Rian Johnson’s Star Laura Dern in Little Women Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. A prolific film producer as well, Dern is an advocate for clean energy and sustainable beauty products as a member of True Botanicals’ Band of Activists.

The Cinema Vanguard Award honors those who have made a unique impact on the world of film. Previous recipients of the award include Willem DeFoe, Michelle Williams, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

She will be honored for her impressive career and most recent performance in Jordan Peele’s Us. “Lupita is a ferocious performer, gifted with both boundless appeal and precision. We are a huge fan of everything she’s done and remain in awe of her double performance in Us. We’re giddily rolling out our red carpet for her,” shared SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling.

Lupita Nyong’o In Us, Nyong’o stars in a dual role as Adelaide Wilson and her doppelgänger, Red. Written and directed by Jordan Peele, the film tells the story of a family of four terrorized by sinister doubles of themselves. In October 2019, Simon & Schuster published Sulwe, Nyong’o’s debut book, which quickly earned a #1 spot on the New York Times Best Seller list.

“I had to work with these two characters with a technical precision like I’d never done before, because I was responsible for two lives, and they were diametrically opposed to each other. They had to be both familiar to each other but also distinct,” Nyong’o shared during an interview with Los Angeles Times.

Nyong’o made her feature debut in Steve McQueen’s Academy Award®-winning film 12 Years a Slave, for which she received the Academy Award® in the category of Best Supporting Actress as well as multiple accolades. She will next appear in 355, a female-driven spy thriller and is set to produce and star in Americanah, Danai Gurira’s adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, which will air as an HBO Max limited series.

The Montecito Award is named after one of the most beautiful and stylish areas in Santa Barbara.

Past recipients include Melissa McCarthy, Sylvester Lupita Nyong’o in Us Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, and Oprah Winfrey.

BARBARA YACHT CLUB’S 2020 YACHTING SEASON has begun! After a couple of month’s hiatus, the racers are ready to don their winter weather gear, brave the cold winds, and start the calendar by hosting the Hot Rum Series (more about that later!). SB Education Foundation Grants Teachers Nearly $85,000

T THE SANTA BARBARA EDUCATION FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL TEACHERS GRANT AWARD CEREMONY on January 8th at the Faulkner Gallery, 56 teachers were awarded $84,982 in grants. The funds will be applied to support the purchase of much-needed supplies and tools and to encourage the development of creative and innovative teaching in the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

“This is one of the big highlights of the year for the Santa Barbara Education Foundation. We were tremendously

impressed by the quality of the grant requests and the commitment our teachers have in igniting a love for learning with local students,” Margie Yahyavi, Executive Director at SBEF, said in a news release.

At the ceremony, appetizers and sweets were provided by the San Marcos High School Culinary Program and the Dos Pueblos High School String Orchestra provided the entertainment. Over 80 people were in attendance, including Superintendent Cary Matsuoka, SBUSD principals and board members of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation.

Some of the funded grant projects included books, musical arrangements, solar cars, flexible classroom seating, a printing press, and a field trip to New York City. The grants were awarded in three funding categories: up to $500, up to $1,500, and up to $5,000. The SBEF awarded 21 grants in the $500 category, 17 in the $1,500 category, and 18 in the $5,000 category.

Huguette’s Dolls & Some Music

DON’T THINK ANY AUCTION except the Duchess of Windsor or Rudolf Nureyev have had the advance publicity of this weekend’s auction right here at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara. I’m speaking of the doll collection of the Huguette Clark estate auction put on by doll expert auctioneers Theriault’s. Huguette Clark, who has had books A doll house I coveted. written about her and who willed Santa Barbara estate to a foundation, is best known for having lived the last 20 years of her life anonymously in a hospital, although in fine health. She had three superb apartments in New York and estates in several cities, including Santa Barbara. She is also known to have had great interest in dolls – particularly French porcelain dolls.

Being a doll collector myself, I was particularly interested, but the Clark dolls were far from what I collect. Local antique dealer Geoffrey Bolton got to the preview the night before the auction and shared some good information with me. He learned that the supposedly hidden Huguette was a frequent patron of Theriault’s. I guess she did it all on the telephone?

And she was actively buying dolls into her 90s. I learned she This doll sold for $30,000! also was involved with doll houses. Not the kind you give a daughter for her fifth birthday. With an intense interest in Japan and Japanese dolls, she had a series of Japanese doll houses made in perfect detail, totally supervising their construction from her hospital residence. Among those she had built were a castle, and a series of normal city and farm houses perfect to the last detail. And what really intrigued me were the series of magnificent dolls she had made of the leading characters from the great novel The Tale of Genji.

Her main interest, however, was French, and some German, porcelain head dolls. Jumeau figured heavily in the collection. There were two Italian felt Lenci dolls which made me feel good. I do have a group of those.

A pair of doll shoes sold Collectors came from all over the world for $3,400. for this auction – collectors with big money which they spent. Seemingly simple dolls went for $10,000 or $15,000. One French bisque by Emile Juneau with signed shoes sold for $31,000. Yes, it was definitely not the usual auction I follow.

Now on to Notre Dame! When we think about Notre Dame University, it’s generally about football, not things like Tchaikovsky’s The Nightingale or Schumann’s Abschied von Frankreich, Op. 135, 1.

But that is a small part of what we got when the large University of Notre Dame Chorale presented a wonderful evening of singing with only piano accompanying them.

These young singers on their 2020 Winter Tour performed one night in the perfect setting of Montecito’s Mt. Carmel Church. They sang an assortment that included songs for the Christmas season, One I liked. settings of poems by Mary, Queen of Scots, Scottish and Irish folk songs, as well as serious classical and opera.

The group, as well as the music, was a big mixture. At the end each student introduced themselves, said where they came from, and what they were studying. What an interesting variety they offered. They were from many states in the U.S. as well as India, China, Jordan, Pakistan, and Singapore. Talking about it with Paul and Karen Sullivan on the way home, Paul observed how many of the students were in the technical sciences – no home economics with sewing and cooking in this crowd.

The church was filled with people from all over Santa Barbara in spite of two other important events happening the same night. We sat with Joanne and Jack Meaney and others enjoying the wonderful young voices, including Bob Estes, Gloria and Spencer Vaughn, and Kathleen and Michael Quinn.

N SATURDAY, JANUARY 11th, a doll auction was conducted at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara that included pieces from the famed Huguette Clark Doll collection. The auction was a tremendous success with total sales exceeding the high estimate by over 30 percent.

The highest dollar amount a single item sold for was $90,000 for a French Bisque Art Character, 225, Jumeau, Couturier Costume with a Parasol in the original box.

Besides those items sold Saturday, the Foundation is maintaining a sampling of the best representations of Huguette Clark’s collecting interest for eventual public display.

The Bellosguardo Foundation is currently working through the process of opening the property to the public on a regular basis for tours of the home and grounds. As such, the Foundation has submitted initial applications to the City of Santa Barbara for a conditional use permit.

Beverley Jackson moved to SB in 1963 from Los Angeles. She wrote a social column for the SB News-Press from 1968-1992. She also wrote the award winning book Splendid Slippers on Chinese footbinding and five other books on China. She latest book is Dolls of Spain. Jackson is avid doll collector and a collector of interesting people. She is also now seriously making and exhibiting pine needle baskets and collage.

Volunteers Needed for the 2020 Homeless Point-In-Time Count Santa Barbara County, the Santa Maria/Santa Barbara County Continuum of Care (CoC), and the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way invite volunteers to participate in the countywide 2020 Homeless Point-In-Time Count from 5:30 to 8:30am on Wednesday, January 29th. The Point-InTime Count is the annual count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness on a given day.

Teams of volunteers and experts will canvas assigned routes throughout the county and will briefly document who is experiencing homelessness.

This information is used to plan local homeless assistance systems and raise public awareness. Volunteers must attend a training session at the following locations from 6-7:30pm: Carpinteria/Summerland: Thursday, January 23rd / Isla Vista: Tuesday, January 21st / Santa Barbara: Wednesday, January 22nd.

Recession recovery to buy back stock and enhance CEO salaries, as I have been saying, so there has been little investment in public works—like infrastructure, education, the environment, and Research & Development, all spending that would restore our flagging labor productivity. Hence annual economic growth has slowed to the current crawl of two percent since then.

And Iraq is now asking U.S. soldiers to leave Iraq. The Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi in a late Thursday night phone call to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said, “American forces had entered Iraq and drones are flying in its airspace without permission from Iraqi authorities, and this was a violation of the bilateral agreements.”

War is a great distractor from our real problems that only better economic growth can solve.

How can such hostile behavior help to keep any economy growing, much less ours? That is the question yet to be answered.

HIS MARKETWATCH GRAPH GIVES AN INSTANT PICTURE OF DECEMBER payroll formation. The consumer-driven service sector is booming with more than 154,000 nonfarm payroll jobs created in December, but 19,000 jobs were lost in the Mining and Manufacturing sectors. Average hourly pay growth is slowing as well.

This is worrisome in the sense that plenty of lower-paying jobs are being created in Construction, Retail, and Wholesale Trade, Transportation, Professional Services, Education/Health, and Leisure activities; hence the record low unemployment rate; but higher-paying job losses for blue collar workers (-19,000) brought the net job gains down to 145,000.

The Labor Department also reported, “In 2019, payroll employment growth totaled 2.1 million, compared with a gain of 2.7 million in 2018. Incorporating revisions for October and November, which decreased payrolls by 14,000, monthly job gains averaged 184,000 over the past three months.”

MarketWatch’s Jeffry Bartash conjectured that skilled workers are so hard to find that companies are afraid to layoff anyone in case the economy does speed up. Hence the job growth is in services, rather than manufactured things made by those blue collar workers.

We now have to look for signs that a signed Phase I tariff agreement with China can keep this economy growing. Estimates for Q4 GDP economic growth are still hovering around just one percent, because companies are not investing in capital investments for future growth. And so manufactured exports that were supposed to expand due to the various trade agreements are also declining. In fact, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve, since 1994 for nondefense capital orders of manufacturing goods excluding aircraft, the so-called capex expenditure growth was ten percent during boom periods. But such investments are currently contracting at one percent, not a good sign for future growth.

The growth rate was last at ten percent from 2010 to 12 due to a boost in government spending that brought us out of the Great Recession, but Tea Party-led Republicans then decreed spending caps and even a 2013 government shutdown that have limited public investments since then.

HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL TREE ON A LITTLE CUL-DE-SAC, planted in my name, providing shade and a picturesque frame for the home adjacent to where it grows. It was a gift from a local REALTOR to my parents when I was born, nearly 50 years ago, when they bought their first house.

A Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best time is now.”

A New Year. A new decade. How are your real estate goals coming along? Is it finally time to stop paying rent? Is it time to acquire that investment property you’ve been thinking about? Is it time to make a move to accommodate a growing family?

Or is it time to downsize, to a more manageable size or to a single level?

VER 40 MUSEUMS presenting art, cultural heritage, natural history, and science will open their doors and invite visitors to view their collections free of charge during the 15th annual Museums Free-for-All day set for January 25th.

Locally, Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, both members of SoCal Museums, will participate, by offering free admission on that date. The Santa Barbara Historical Museum will also be participating as an affiliate member.

“We’re proud to celebrate 15 years of Free-for-All, welcoming visitors across Southern California to enjoy a wide variety of museums. It’s a great chance to revisit old favorites or discover something new,” Jennifer Caballero, SoCal Museums President and Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Marketing Director at the Skirball Cultural Center, said in a news release. “I’m always impressed by the range of cultural offerings.”

The production team spent about three weeks building a wooden millrace that brought water down from the hills above. The creek itself was also man made and involved digging a huge trench, laying out a heavy rubber membrane, and filling it with thousands of gallons of water. Most of the film is centered around the creek.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To Be Celebrated In Santa Barbara

A

NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. will include local remembrances and activities starting Friday at noon and running through Monday.

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now,” stated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of his most famous comments about the nation.

Dr. King, a Nobel Laureate with five honorary degrees, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929 and was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 while leading a strike for garbage workers in Memphis, Tennessee. As a native son, he was one of the greatest civil rights leaders in America’s history. At the age of 35, he became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It has been estimated he traveled over six million miles and spoke over 2,500 times. He wrote five books and dozens of articles. He helped plan the peaceful March On Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people where he delivered his most famous speech, I Have a Dream. Dr. King was arrested about 20 times during his crusades against injustice.

The keynote speaker on Monday, January 20th, during the Santa Barbara events will be the Reverend James M. Lawson, Dr. King’s coworker, who will present a program planned for Monday at 11am at the Arlington Theatre. Reverend Lawson is an inductee into the California Hall of Fame for his life’s work in non-violence and social justice.
