Fostering Education, Entertainment, and Inspiration

MAJOR GIFT TO UCSB ARTS & LECTURES FROM UCSB ALUMNUS JOHN AND HIS WIFE JODY ARNHOLD will support residencies with world-renowned artists. The Arnhold A&L Education Initiative will deepen Arts & Lectures’ signature cross-campus collaborations that connect featured A&L guests with students in the classroom, enhancing campus partnerships across disciplines, and including members of the Santa Barbara community. “The Arnholds’ gift is truly visionary,” noted Arts & Lectures’ Miller McCune Executive Director, Celesta M. Billeci. “It will allow Arts & Lectures to fulfill our mission to serve our campus and community with robust residencies and arts education programs with some of today’s most prolific performers. Beginning last October with the great Arturo O’Farrill and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and now on to Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Hispánico, and beyond, the Arnholds’ multi-year commitment means that we can deliver life-changing arts experiences. A&L can continue to create hope; even in these challenging times we can look forward.” UC Santa Barbara English Department Alumnus John Arnhold, with his wife Jody, a luminary in dance education, made a generous gift of $1.145 million that will be used over three years. Inspired by the energy of campus and the world-class artists and thinkers A&L brings to the community, John Arnhold relishes the student opportunities he and his wife Jody can help make possible.“The arts stimulate the imagination,” he said,“so exposing students to those at the top of their craft will enhance the educational experience at UCSB. Students will think bigger, dream bigger, and create bigger.” The Arnholds’ philanthropy at UC Santa Barbara has made a significant impact on the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts, UCSB Athletics, and beyond; including support for students and production in Theater and Dance, the English Department, and recently the opening of the new Arnhold Tennis Center. “The residencies supported through this initiative impact our campus as well as the larger Santa Barbara community,” added Loribeth Gregory-Beck, A&L’s Director of Education & Community Engagement. “Learners of all ages, both on campus and off, benefit from the inspiration shared during educational sessions.”

As of Friday, January 28th, The Fund for Santa Barbara has opened its Spring Grant Cycle for interested applicants, with preference being given to projects that address root causes of racial, social, political, environmental, and economic issues. “The FUND believes that significant social changes ultimately require broad participation in and democratic control of all social, political, and economic institutions,” reads The FUND’s announcement. “Historically, social conditions improve most dramatically when people organize on their own behalf, form alliances with other like-minded people and organizations, and build coalitions to confront and change the conditions that have denied them access, equity, and justice.” The nonprofit offers general support and project grants to small organizations, targeted grants to larger organizations, and seed grants to grassroots projects. To support applicants, including past grant recipients, The FUND will host three free, online workshops regarding their Spring Grant Cycle application process. Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog:
Unrelenting Storytelling
It's well-constructed script by the screenwriter-director, based on a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, at first offers the look of a classical western, with the mythic lifestyle of cowboys and Native American characters on the edge of historical extinction as isolation surrounds them. Exploring the relationship between two brothers and the cattle ranch they manage, the story thematically echoes Brokeback Mountain (both the short story and the
movie) as well as Howard Hawk’s film masterpiece, Red River from 1949, starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift. The genre basis of the movie is part comingof-age and in part a languid study of rural American history. Midway through, the film shifts gears and transforms into a homoerotic thriller, informing the third act as it gains momentum and concludes with heartbreak and hope. The Power of the Dog grabs the dark subject matter within the story in its unflinching gaze. The exceptional cast is part of an outstanding ensemble, with an especially strong performance coming from Benedict Cumberbatch as the notorious anti-hero of the film, Phil Burbank. Cumberbatch will deservedly receive the Cinema Vanguard Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on March 9th.

The British actor has some truly great scenes and, as a counterpoint, Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) matches him with quiet anguish. Kodi Smit-McPhee playing her son uses an odd physicality providing an unsettling psychological portrayal of a young man who challenges Cumberbatch’s roughneck bullying ways.

Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman as Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball By Daisy Scott / VOICE
O
UTSHINING OTHER 2021 ONSCREEN COUPLES as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem will bring their on-screen chemistry to the Arlington Theatre as the Santa Barbara International Film Festival presents them with the Maltin Modern Master Award at 8pm Thursday, March 10th. The pair, both critically-acclaimed, highly talented actors in their own right, will discuss their careers and their recent film prior to receiving the award. “Nicole Kidman continues to challenge and reinvent herself year after year. Javier Bardem’s talent is a gift to the world. Only in Hollywood could these actors find themselves playing America’s all time favorite TV couple. It’s cause for celebration,” remarked film critic Leonard Maltin, for who the award is named. The Maltin Modern Master is the highest honor SBIFF can bestow upon an actor. In presenting the award to Kidman and Bardem, SBIFF recognizes their contributions to the cinema industry and our larger culture through their outstanding performances. Past recipients have included Bill Murray, Glenn Close, Denzel Washington, and Christopher Plummer. Kidman has long distinguished herself as a versatile performer, with her early roles including the romance Far and Away and director Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. She also holds the Academy Award for Best Actress for her 2002 performance as author Virginia Woolf in The Hours. More recently, Kidman has won two Emmy Awards for acting and producing the television series Big Little Lies. Bardem is the first Spanish actor to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, which he received for his role as an
assassin in the 2007 western No Country For Old Men. Earlier, he was also the first Spanish actor to be nominated for an Academy Award, earning a nomination for Best Actor for portraying Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in the 2000 biopic Before Night Falls. His more recent films include Skyfall, The Good Boss, and Dune. From director Aaron Sorkin’s, Being the Ricardos provides an intimate look into Lucy and Desi’s struggles beyond the set of I Love Lucy, including accusations of Lucy being a communist and wrestling with cultural expectations for television. Viewers are left with not only greater appreciation for Lucy and Desi, but also Kidman’s and Bardem’s respective skills. Both actors have commented on the profound insight portraying Lucy and Desi offered them on the television icons’ lives and accomplishments, and their subsequent commitment to capturing the complexity of their characters. “We love them, these two people,” Kidman told the Hollywood Reporter in December 2021. “And not to the point of where you’re not going to show their flaws, their humanity. That’s what I felt this film was most — was human.” Bardem also spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about Desi’s unique struggle as a Cuban actor holding a successful career in the 1950s American film industry. “I’ve been lucky enough to be included in a film industry that goes beyond the Spanish film industry,” said Bardem. “Being Desi Arnaz in the ’50s in the States was a different thing. It was like being an alien. It was something very unique, especially when you were married to an American icon. People didn’t really respect him for what he was.” For tickets ($25) to the Maltin Modern Masters Award, visit www.sbiff.org

Sounds About Town
Town of Swing, for a Weekend
S
By Josef Woodard / VOICE
The Brubeck show brings with it considerable historical, civic, and sentimental resonances, given Dave’s multiple shows in that space, and the familial connection with his music educator brother Henry’s distinguished background as a teacher in Santa Barbara. (More on that show in next week’s column). Of course, nobody will accuse either the Marsalis or Brubeck names of courting modernist or post-modernist impulses. They’re more standard-bearers, in their own sweet way. We last heard from Wynton and gang in November of 2020, from the LCJO’s home in NYC’s Columbus Circle-based HQ (warmly dubbed “the house of swing” by the boss) to our homes, streaming-style. It was again brought to us courtesy of A&L, a Marsalis-presenting force for many years now. Nestled in the storied and Gotham view-endowed Appel Room of the “Lincoln Center” complex, the suit-and-tied big band, one of the finest – if hardly the most adventurous – in the land and world premiered a new Marsalis-penned suite, The Democracy! Suite. (Its exclamation point was added to the title after Joe Biden won his place in the White House).

ANTA BARBARA ENJOYS A HEALTH CULTURAL LIFE in terms of its status as a hot spot for touring musicians and groups. Jazz, however, comes and goes. Suddenly, next weekend, we will get a potent one-two punch for our jazz-loving money, as the UCSB Arts & Lectures-hosted Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra hits the Granada Theater on Friday night, February 4th, and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet lands at the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, February 5th, for a special centennial celebration of their late, great father Dave. Last fall, there came a very different windfall of jazz, when Pat Metheny’s Side-Eye project and local-global hero Charles Lloyd graced the eminently jazzfriendly Lobero in short order. Another concentrated jazz dosage is in order.
The Brubeck Brothers Quartet will play the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, February 5th
contemporary spices sprinkled within and on top of the historicist writing. In some sense, in November of 2020, the neo-conservative spin of Marsalis’ musical outlook and product arrived on our home-bound living rooms as a sort of healing balm for us, in the depths of lockdown. As JLCO returns to make the Granada a temporary “house of swing” next Friday, the band will come equipped with its deep catalogue of charts – old, new, and older – plus a fierce and focused musicality. Can we consider this show a second line semi-wake for omicron? Time and virality will tell.
The Democracy! Suite – released on a recording last year – is a bold but accessible, easyon-the-ears eight-part suite, spanning a range of jazz idiomatic dialects. Social commentary is suggested within its instrumental means, as with the brisk, bop-ish Ballot Box Bounce, the BLM-geared Sloganize, Patronize, Realize, Revolutionize, and the jubilant New Orleans-ian sashay of the finale That’s When All Will See. As usual, neo-conservative Marsalis leans into his preference for jazz models dating from the mid-60s, going backwards in jazz lineage, with
MO’ SOhO SHOW BIZ: Mathematically and literally, Martin Sexton – playing SOhO on Sunday – is a solo artist. Once experienced in a live setting, however, we recognize that this musician genuinely embodies the very essence of the “one-man band” moniker. Maybe it has partly to do with his performance-honing early life as a serious busker in Boston, learning how to grab hold of a spontaneous spirit regardless of the “room.” Rock, folk, blues, soul, and “Sextonia” seamlessly blend together in his musical tapestry-in-motion.

Thankfully, the warming environs of SOhO has been a landing spot for Sexton over the past several years, and each show there feels like something special, enlivened by his livewire skills as guitarist, vocalist, and moment-seizing acrobat. After a discographic dry spell after 2015’s Mixtape of the Open Road, Sexton released the aptly-named EP 2020 Vision last year, in full band form and including a cameo by admirer John Mayer. SOhO continues to be an inspiring outpost in the cautiously re-opening of America for live music, Santa Barbara division. Take next Monday’s booking of Molly Tuttle, the acclaimed bluegrass/ Americana artist, with a commanding style on guitar, banjo, as well as in singersongwriter garb. All of 29 now, the NorCal-born Tuttle studied at Berklee School of Music in Boston before heeding the magnetic pull to Nashville, and has earned expanding respect for her work and solo albums, including the 2020 release …but I’d rather be with you.

Her SOhO show also features another gifted and young (22) singersongwriter, Bella White, a Rounder Records artist who also carries the torch for traditional music fiber, bluegrassy and otherwise.
Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. A Whale of a Tale!
T
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE
An aerial view of Stearns Wharf and the Santa Barbara Harbor
a community focal point and a tourist location like no other. Over the years, Stearns Wharf has been battered by storms, scorched by fires, even damaged by a water spout, but it still stands today with a length of 2,300 feet and an area of 3.8 acres supported by 2,307 piles. This iconic pier has persevered because it offers something no other place in town can... an ‘in depth” perspective! In honor of the 150th anniversary, Stearns Wharf merchants will hold Wharf Wednesdays on the first Wednesday of each month, and special deals will be available for a variety tasty treats, wines, and fun items in the gift shops. Additionally, during the year, there will be anniversary specials, a bit of history, and lots of fun, family-friendly activities. The commemoration will culminate with a special celebration, complete with fireworks, in October 2022. The results of the previous months of planning for this anniversary year are beginning to appear for us to enjoy. How about joining me on a first Wednesday to browse the shops and restaurants on Stearns Wharf for special delights to taste and see? I’ll keep you posted on any new developments for the waterfront’s big year... so stay tuned! Sigrid Toye volunteers for the Breakwater Flag Project. She is on the board of directors of the Maritime Museum and participates in Yacht Club activities. An educational/behavior therapist, Sigrid holds a Ph.D in clinical psychology. She loves all things creative, including her two grown children who are working artists. Send Harbor tips to: Itssigrid@gmail.com

HIS WEEK’S EXCITEMENT INCLUDES THE APPEARANCE OF SOME ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WEATHER THAT ILLUMINATED THE BEACHES AND MOUNTAINS FRAMING SANTA BARBARA. In the late afternoons the winter sun’s golden glow changes from bright blue, deepening to yellows and oranges, finally falling into the darkness of night. Whether on one of our beaches or a quiet road overlooking the city, photographers appear reveling in the evening’s glorious light show. And who could miss the huge orb of the ascending moon? On the subject of artists, young artists have an opportunity to have their creations on display at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, in the harbor’s own art gallery. As an introduction to the next major exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes, the museum is holding an immersive ocean art experience featuring artwork submitted by children in grades K-6. An immersive art show has special meaning since my visit to Los Angeles to view the Immersive Van Gogh in a specially designed Hollywood venue. Vincent Van Gogh’s work was featured in towering images enveloping the entire exhibit space – walls, ceilings, and floors - through the use of light, music, and movement. The Maritime Museum hopes to create a similar effect in the Munger Theater featuring audio and video components that bring children’s artwork to life. This A Whale of a Tale experience and the children’s art are components of the multi-faceted Whales Are Superheroes exhibit exploring whales’ effect on the ocean, climate change, and air quality. A painting submitted to SBMM by a local student Children are invited to submit their interpretation of a whale, a whale’s activities, and/or anything ocean-relate, such as kelp, starfish, dolphins, and other sea creatures. Artwork is to be created on 8½” x 11” white paper with crayons, colored pencils, and/or markers and submitted by January 31st and will be on display from April 15th to May 15th. Other news: As promised, I’m anxious to keep you up to date as the plans underway for the 150th anniversary celebrations in and around the harbor. The latest news is from Stearns Wharf, a structure that changed the face of the Santa Barbara! 150 years ago, Santa Barbara, completely surrounded by mountains, was an isolated pueblo framed by high mountains and the Pacific ocean. There were no roads into the area and no railroads. Boats arriving by sea threw their goods overboard to float their way to shore. When John Peck Stearns built the wharf in 1872, he not only opened the door to largescale commerce and trade but introduced Santa Barbara to the rest of the world. Since that time Stearns Wharf evolved along with the city as a vital conduit for a growing fishing fleet and became the birthplace of commercial diving. To this day it serves as

Dredging Helps Boaters Find Safe Harbor
Support for the return of CRUISE SHIPS to the Santa Barbara waterfront will be coming from the Harbor Commission in a letter to city and health officials. The last ship stopped on March 4, 2020 prior to the COVID crisis.

EconomicVOICE Has Omicron Slowed Economic Growth?
oppose anything the Biden administration is doing. Doing so in this case, will cost more lives and slower job growth among their own constituents. By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE
S
URPRISE, SURPRISE, the latest data show that the Omicron variant has done little damage to economic growth.
The current predictions for fourth quarter growth are five to six percent, more than making up for the 2.3 percent Q3 slowdown, as Omicron infections wane. The Atlanta Fed just announced that its Q4 GPNow model estimate for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the fourth quarter of 2021 is 5.1 percent on January 19th, up from 5.0 percent on January 14th. This is the most up to date prediction. They attributed the upward growth adjustment to “this morning’s housing starts report from the U.S. Census Bureau (a very large increase).” Privately‐owned housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,702,000, said the Census Bureau. This is 1.4 percent above the revised November estimate of 1,678,000 and is 2.5 percent (±13.8 percent) * above the December 2020 rate of 1,661,000. As many as 1,800,000 units were authorized at the height of the housing bubble in 2006. And an estimated 1,724,700 housing
units were authorized by building permits in 2021, close to the 2006 high, 17.2 percent (±0.6 percent) above the 2020 figure of 1,471,100. So, builders are racing to catch up to the soaring demand for housing, which is already boosting economic growth. And the Conference Board Index of Leading Economic Indicators (LEI), made up of ten economic indicators such as interest rate trends, building permits, and manufacturing new orders that purports to predict growth six months ahead, rose 0.8 percent, also a very large number.
That said, the trillions of dollars in pandemic aid should mitigate concerns that higher inflation will do much harm to
Where is that moderation expected? Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman has pointed out several times that red states have lower vaccination rates than in the blue states, and Omicron infection rates are highest among the unvaccinated. It’s Republicans wanting to

“The U.S. LEI ended 2021 on a rising trajectory, suggesting the economy will continue to expand well into the spring,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, Senior Director of Economic Research at The Conference Board. “For the first quarter, headwinds from the Omicron variant, labor shortages, and inflationary pressures—as well as the Federal Reserve’s expected interest rate hikes—may moderate economic growth.”

However, the need to vanquish COVID-19, or at least tame it so that it acts more like a seasonal flu, has united enough Americans to put money where it will do the most good—into infrastructure and family pocketbooks, rather than speculators’ pockets, as was happening before the pandemic.
consumers and economic growth in 2022. The current inflation numbers are a sign of robust growth, so let’s worry more about getting everyone vaccinated and the supply chains unclogged.

30 Days & Counting
C
By Kerry Methner / VOICE
ONTEXT, CONTEMPORARIES, AND A DEPTH OF SCHOLARSHIP AND CREATIVITY are marks of one of the most significant exhibitions to open at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and perhaps in the west, in recent years. This references Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources set to open February 27th, just 30 days from now.
This week some of the work may begin to be installed, though, “the loans haven’t arrived yet, but certainly will before the opening,” shared Katrina Carl, Director of Communications at SBMA. As the day approaches, the pace of preparation is quickening, with many people working at the Museum and around Santa Barbara to make it an unforgettable community event. Many of the soon to arrive works are by van Gogh and some are by artists who were his peers and his inspiration. Also arriving, will be the exhibition catalogue of the same name - 300 plus pages of essays and artwork to inspire and inform readers. “Once the artworks arrive,” according to Carl, “they will need to acclimate first, be conditioned, and depending on the loan, will need to be overseen by couriers from the lending institution, all the way to actual installation on the wall.” T It will be a logistical challenge and the Museum is ready. Right now they are building walls, painting, building cases, and installing vinyl didactics and graphics. “Installation will begin as early as next week,” Carl says. his book tells the story of an artist who left France for the U.S. at age four. He returned to France to study, but left again to make his name and fortune in New York. He returned to France in 1917 to serve in World War I, but then went back to New York to rebuild his career. His remarkable first act made for quite a story, and Dabo dined out on it throughout the twenties. This is also that rare story of an American who enjoyed a second act. Following on the heels of a critically well-received exhibition of floral painting at Knoedler Gallery in New York in 1933, Dabo’s career accelerated with a string of exhibitions in New York through the 1930s before he was invited to exhibit in Paris at Galerie Zak in 1938. He returned again, exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne, the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, and Galerie Montparnasse. He was golden. And then, war again. He narrowly escaped with many of the paintings in this book, but he returned to France one last time to exhibit with Çézanne in a Provençal museum. He seemed always to return to France, if, in his heart, he ever left.
As the Museum prepares, so too the many community partners who have collaborated with the Museum to create exhibitions and experiences all around the City in

concert with this important, perhaps once in a decade or so, exhibition. Across Anapamu Street, the team at Sullivan Goss have prepared an exhibition which opens this week. If the Museum’s exhibition explores Vincent and those who influenced him, at Sullivan Goss, they are looking at a French born American artist, Leon Dabo, who was influenced by van Gogh. Dabo lived from 1864 to 1960. This exhibition focuses on his later years. This exhibition also deserves a book and Sullivan Goss has produced one Leon Dabo, En France Encore, their fourth about Dabo. A gallery print of the book will be ready for this weekend’s visitors, according to Jeremy Tessmer, who wrote the main text, which is introduced by gallery owner Nathan Vonk. They have also ordered a few copies which are in production.
Jon Smith and Ian Plant, two of a team of artists from The Environment Markers who are helping fabricate sunflowers for students to paint that will then be placed on sculpture pads on State Street and eventually moved to Jardin De Las Granadas. Others include Bunny Hurley, Van Granaroli, and Steven Harwood.
In addition to community partners, this exhibition needed many financial sponsors. Community members and organizations stepped up there too. A sunflower in the contstruction process – petals but no center yet...

NE OF THE EXCITING ELEMENTS that will be included in this community extravaganza, are six sunflower sculptures that have been fabricated by The Environment Makers and will be painted by local high school students who have been studying about Vincent van Gogh and his painting style. They will be installed on the State Street sculpture pads and then take a turn in Jardin de las Granadas. According to Sarah York Rubin, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture, the sunflowers will go to students for painting on Monday, February 7th and they will picked up on Friday, February 18th. “Our target install date is February 27th, but our (self-imposed) install deadline is Thursday, March 3rd in order to have them up by the first Thursday in March,” York Rubin noted. That’s quite a challenge to paint like van Gogh... Can you imagine? Watch for them on State Street in March!
Principal Sponsors of Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources are Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree; Elaine F. Stepanek Foundation; Bank of American; The Luria/ Budgor Family Foundation; and Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women’s Board with Major support by: Gina Jannotta, Nancy and Doug Norberg, Diane Sullivan, and Barbara Woods. Additional funding is provided by: Pat Aoyama and Chris Kleveland, Christine and Michael Holland, Robert Lehman Foundation, Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, Dutch Culture USA Program, Santa Barbara Beautiful, City of Santa Barbara Events and Festivals Grant Program, and SBMA Dead Artists Society. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. www.sbma.net

The pair lived together for nine weeks in France, with Gauguin only coming once van Gogh’s brother, Theo, paid for his travel. Together, they learned and developed their art. “The discussion is excessively electric,” van Gogh wrote Theo. “We sometimes emerge from it with tired minds, like an electric battery after it’s run down.” The artists’ Paul Gauguin (French, 1848–1903), Christmas Night (The Blessing of the Oxen), 1902–3. Rosales’ interweaving of representations from ancient Greek and Yoruba mythologies invites viewers to challenge their ideas about identity and empowerment. HARMONIA ROSALES Harmonia Rosales is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work challenges ideological hegemony in contemporary society. Learn more about the artist and her work at harmoniarosales.com.
