Join the Santa Barbara Walk to End Alzheimer’s

UT ON YOUR SNEAKERS AND JOIN THE FIGHT TO END ALZHEIMER’S by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on November 7th!

All Santa Barbara County residents are invited to participate, though this year, due to COVID-19, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s will not be hosting a large gathering. To safeguard the health and safety of walkers and volunteers, entrants will walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks, and trails.

“The pandemic is changing how we walk, but it doesn’t change the need to walk,” shared Lindsey Leonard, executive director of the California Central Coast Chapter. “Our mission to support those affected

by Alzheimer's and other dementia has become even more critical during COVID-19. The majority of people we help are immunocompromised, which puts them at greater risk. We've witnessed increased difficulties of caregivers being isolated at home or separated from their loved ones that live in care facilities.”

The Association's mission is to accelerate global research, drive risk reduction and early detection, and maximize quality care and support. Along the Central Coast, nearly 3,000 local families participate in virtual support groups and education classes.

While all Walk participants share the same vision for a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, many also have a personal connection to the disease and are walking in honor of a loved one.

Gene Lucas, former executive vice chancellor of UCSB, is walking in honor of Susan, his wife of over 40 years. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Gene has not been able to visit Susan at Villa Alamar for nearly nine months. Despite this challenge, he is dedicated to the Walk and is encouraging others to join him in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

and member of Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative (AWI), Leigh is passionate about making positive changes for increased support and research towards a cure. “I think we all have that passion to find a cure when we are hit hard with the disease,” Leigh said. “The Walk is a great opportunity to keep everyone engaged in this fight; it doesn’t end because of other things going on and we are here to make a difference.”

Team AWI, led by Committee Chair and Board Director, Katina Zaninovich, is a top fundraiser for this year’s Walk. The group of 20 women have previously involved the community in their mission to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association through annual luncheons that feature research presentations and keynote speakers.

This year’s Santa Barbara Walk To End Alzheimer’s Committee, comprised of Pam Bigelow, Mary Jo Swalley, Kathy Carrigan, and Michelle Gillian, have been working hard through outreach and planning to ensure the success of this year’s event as a powerful and moving experience.

On Walk day, walkers will be able to view a virtual Opening Ceremony hosted by Andrew Firestone. After walking, participants are invited to safely experience the view-only Promise Flower Garden located at the Santa Barbara Mission, honoring the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

growing,” said Ruskey. “We’re growing up, down, sideways, trying to maximize our space.”

Recent coffee market trends further support California farmers getting involved with the coffee industry. Ruskey explained that we’re witnessing a “third wave movement” of the coffee industry, where people are caring more where their coffee is coming from.

“What we have now is a demand like fine wine, that people are saying, ‘well if you take really good care of your coffee, it tastes like nothing we’ve had before, and we’re willing to pay for that experience like we would with a fine wine,’” Ruskey explained.

Farmers within the Frinj network receive 60 percent of the return from growing and selling their coffee to Frinj Coffee, Inc. This is a dramatic difference from average produce supply chains, where farmers usually experience between a two to five percent return, according to Frinj. This is due to their implementing what Ruskey calls “a farmer first program.”

Finding Meaning During In-between Times

T

HESE ARE INTERESTING TIMES. For many of us, the life we were all living in early March has changed so much we could say it’s gone. What we’re moving toward and when we might get there is unclear. We are caught between what was and what is yet to come. In spiritual work, we know this as liminal time, a threshold of sorts between the old and the new.

Liminal times bring several things, one is tremendous uncertainty. That’s not fun or easy.

It’s made harder because we don’t know how long we’ll be here, so it can feel like we’re stuck in between. I have been helped to not feel as stuck, overwhelmed, or powerless by recognizing this time as liminal - because threshold times also hold possibility and a certain power for change. It’s like when you stand in a doorway, having left one space but not yet stepped into the new one. There is a sense of possibility about what might be found in this next room.

So as we all live here in between our old life and whatever is next, let us support ourselves and each other as we look for possibilities and meaning. It’s important to first acknowledge that this liminal time is stressful. We have very deep health, economic, systemic racism, I have been helped and political to not feel as stuck, concerns. overwhelmed, or The future is powerless by recognizing unknown and our brains prefer this time as liminal predictability. because threshold times So if you’ve also hold possibility and felt anxiety, a certain power for disconnection, change. grief, loneliness, — Rev. At Hospice of Santa Barbara, we accompany folks with life threatening illness, which is also a liminal time of uncertainty. We know that it can help to notice and name what we are experiencing. So be honest with yourself and with others about how you are feeling and coping. Talk about it with a trusted person. And breathe. Slow deep breaths settle the nervous system and bring us into the present moment where we are safe rather than being caught up in fearful thoughts about the future.

Breathing in, pause, breathing out.

It also helps to look for meaning and to prioritize what matters most to us. One way to find meaning is to ask ourselves, “What has surprised me in a good way during these months?” What has been unexpectedly fun, calming, or connecting? It could be as simple as driving less or enjoying the beauty of nature, getting outside to garden, walk, and appreciate the peace and the abundance of wildlife. And maybe there is something else, unique to your experience.

I have had the unexpected surprise of getting to do yoga again with my favorite Cleveland yoga teacher. I lived there for five years and took her class every week, so I’ve missed her and was thrilled to find her class online now because of COVID-19! It’s been so comforting; my brain loves the return of this predictable routine. More importantly, this good surprise has shown me that staying connected with those I love who live far away is important. It matters to me, so I’ve been reaching out to other dear ones I let fall through the cracks of my old busy life. This is one way I have found meaning in these in between times that I intend to take with me and prioritize in the new life that is on its way. How about you?

We encourage everyone to breathe, to notice and name whatever you are feeling and to explore what is meaningful in the uncertainty of this liminal time. May we all explore possibility and find meaning here on the threshold.

STOS SON TIEMPOS INTERESANTES. Para muchos de nosotros, la vida que todos vivíamos a principios de marzo ha cambiado tanto que podríamos decir que ha desaparecido. No está claro hacia dónde nos dirigimos y cuándo podríamos llegar allí.

Estamos atrapados entre lo que fue y lo que está por venir. En el trabajo espiritual, lo conocemos como tiempo liminal, una especie de umbral entre lo viejo y lo nuevo.

Los tiempos liminales traen varias cosas, una es tremenda incertidumbre. Eso no es divertido ni fácil. Se hace más difícil porque no sabemos cuánto tiempo estaremos aquí, por lo que puede parecer que estamos atrapados en el medio. Me ha ayudado a no sentirme estancada, abrumada o impotente al reconocer este tiempo como liminal, porque los tiempos de umbral también tienen posibilidades y cierto poder de cambio. Es como cuando te paras en una puerta, habiendo dejado un espacio pero aún no has entrado en el nuevo. Hay una sensación de posibilidad sobre lo que podría encontrarse en esta habitación contigua.

Así que, como todos vivimos aquí, entre nuestra vida anterior y lo que sea que venga, apoyémonos unos a otros mientras buscamos posibilidades y significado. Es importante reconocer primero que este tiempo liminal es estresante. Tenemos preocupaciones muy profundas de salud, economía, racismo sistémico y político. Community News Ruairi Bateson Named SB Visitor Center Manager

RUAIRI BATESON will begin acting as the Santa Barbara Visitor Center Manager for both the State Street and Garden Street locations this fall. He assumes this position with more than 20 years experience managing retail stores for both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Originally from Ireland, Bateson has lived in Carpinteria for the past 14 years. As Visitor Center Ruairi Bateson Manager, he will oversee the centers’ staff and volunteers as they work to serve those visiting our lovely community.

Overseen by the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce, both of these visitor centers are currently operating with new public health guidelines amidst the pandemic.

HE DOWNTOWN SANTA BARBARA ORGANIZATION announced a new collaboration with the City of Santa Barbara, a State Street Promenade Market between Carrillo and Figueroa streets, that will open November 5th, to coincide with daylight savings time, be open for the holidays, and continue throughout the year every Thursday from 3 to 7:30pm.

“Our ultimate goal is to have a lively Thursday afternoon/evening gathering that locals can enjoy with their families and as well as enjoy temporary art and light installations and sample downtown food and drink. When permissible we look to add live music as well,” shared Interim Downtown Santa Barbara Executive Director Robin Elander.

The marketplace will be located on the 1000 block of State Street between the blocks of Carrillo Street and Figueroa Street and expand to additional blocks as it grows. It will highlight downtown businesses and local artisans and utilize the newly created State Street Promenade as well as the holiday lights that will go up November 1st!

Booming Home Sales Create Housing Shortage

OOMING REALTORS’ EXISTING-HOME SALES are showing there is a very severe housing shortage with record sales and a record low housing inventory. Santa Barbara REALTOR Jim Witmer said the demand for Santa Barbara homes is huge and inventory is being held back by seller’s concerns about the virus. Buyers are making decisions based on spending more time at home, with work space and more amenities.

“This trend continues as more people relocate to the safety and lifestyle offered by Santa Barbara. This should continue to drive our values up. The supply is limited and it is a good time to be a seller,” Witmer noted.

Inventory levels are at record lows, with just 228 homes listed for sale in the MLS in September, down 22 percent from January.

The NAR reports that housing affordability declined in August compared to a year ago, despite median incomes rising. However, the jump in home prices—up 11.7 percent—was way above family income increases of 2.2 percent, since August 2019.

“Home sales continue to amaze, and there are plenty of buyers in the pipeline ready to enter the market,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.

“Further gains in sales are likely for the remainder of the year, with mortgage rates hovering around three percent and with continued job recovery.”

Total housing inventory at the end of August totaled 1.49 million units, down 0.7 percent from July

and down 18.6 percent from one year ago (1.83 million).

Unsold inventory sits at a 3.0-month supply at the current sales pace, down from 3.1 months in July and down from the 4.0-month figure recorded in August 2019.

Scarce inventory has been problematic for the past few years, according to Yun, an issue he says has worsened in the past month due to the dramatic surge in lumber prices and the dearth of lumber resulting from California wildfires.

Mortgage rates are helping to offset some of those high home prices, however. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to three percent in August and has averaged below three percent in the past few weeks, the lowest on record.

The NAR also reports pending home sales for contracts closing in the same two months are also surging, which will boost sales through the end of the year. Pending home sales in August continued to move upward, marking four uninterrupted months of positive contract activity. Each of the four major regions experienced growth in month-over-month and year-over-year pending home sales transactions.

The Pending Home Sales Index, www.nar.realtor/pending-home-sales, a forward-looking indicator of home sales based on contract signings, rose 8.8 percent to 132.8 – a record high – in August. Year-over-year, contract signings rose 24.2 percent.

The sale pendings reported by Santa Barbara MLS are again much higher than the previous year (50 percent), so we can expect October to also be a big month for sales, said Witmer.

A few examples: 1. He says not all of the revenue will go to cities and schools.

There are always administrative costs when a law is changed but where is the evidence that it will go elsewhere?

2. He says the proposition targets minority and urban property owners. Where in the legislation are they targeted? It is true that owners of large businesses and corporations will now be asked to pay their fair share. If he thinks they are currently paying their fair share then why doesn’t he say so? That is the real question voters need to decide in their vote about this proposition. My sense is that very few minority businesses own the real estate; they rent, so will they really be directly impacted? Only if the landholders decide to pass these costs onto the minority businesses that he now seems so concerned about. Where were the REALTORS and his employer when the pandemic hit and many small businesses, including those owned by minorities were so hard hit? Did they contribute to the funds that were established to try and help these innocent but now unemployed workers?

3. Where is his evidence that if Prop. 15 passes that local cities and counties will be more interested in approving commercial over residential development. Surely he knows about zoning laws and that cities and counties recognize the housing crisis we are in and especially the need for low income housing to solve our homeless problem.

4. Lastly, where is his evidence that Prop. 15 proponents want to roll back Prop. 13 and where is his evidence that “leaders from both sides of the political spectrum are lining up against this? I would invite him to name five prominent Democrats in our state who oppose this proposition?

World Dance for Humanity to Host Virtual THRILLS & CHILLS Dance Fest

HIS HALLOWEEN SEASON, do the Monster Mash for a good cause by partaking in World Dance for Humanity’s first virtual dance fest! With online preparation classes currently ongoing, the dance fest will consist of a Michael Jackson Thriller dance on October 24th, and a costume dance party on Halloween itself. All donated funds will support the WD4H Rwanda Education Fund, though there is no minimum donation requirement to partake in the fun.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary World Dance for Humanity is hosting the THRILLS & CHILLS Halloween event,” said WD4H Executive Director Janet Reineck. “It’s a much loved community tradition that normally attracts hundreds of dancers who perform around town, culminating with the grand finale performance of Thriller in the Sunken Garden at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. While the pandemic and current County public health regulations don’t permit large local in-person social gatherings, curtailing our usual ‘flash mobs’ and main performance, we found a virtual workaround. It actually works to our benefit, offering us

a way to reach thousands of new ‘spook-tacular’ online fans around the world. This enables WD4H to share our mission which is changing lives... one step at a time.”

WD4H is hosting free daily Zoom classes at 10am in preparation for the dance fest. Participants in these online sessions learn steps to Halloween music like Monster Mash, Ghostbusters, and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. Special classes highlighting Thriller dance moves will take place on October 17th and 24th at 10am, and on the 21st at 6pm.

WD4H is also compiling a video of individuals across the world dancing at home in preparation for the Halloween festivities. The organization asks that all who want to contribute to this international effort submit their home dance videos no later than October 25th.

In the past, participants in the WD4H THRILLS & CHILLS event were asked to make a minimum $40 donation. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, donations from participants are optional. Funds raised from these voluntary donations will support the WD4H Education Fund, which works toward supporting 320 Rwandan students’ access to education in 2021.

Penny Little and Carrie Topliffe Release New Song, “Raise Your Voice Up”

ITH ELECTION DAY MERE WEEKS AWAY, local singersongwriter Penny Little and lyricist Carrie Topliffe have released a new song to encourage listeners to vote. Titled Raise Your Voice Up, the song’s lyrics share the importance of voting through a lively, contemporary pop sound with gospel influences.

“No one disputes the importance of this election,” said Topliffe. “We need to participate in democracy if we want it to stay strong. I want to encourage everyone’s voice to be heard, so I wrote the lyrics to be non-partisan and inclusive.”

The featured singer for Raise Your Voice Up is Kenneith Perrin, a recording and touring artist who has opened for Dale Bozzio and Missing Persons in the past. Back-up vocals were provided by Wendy Sims-Moten and Alison Zuber, and Gary Yoshimura played guitar. The song was also included in the recently released album Runnin’ in the Rain, by Little’s collaborative musical and media project, The Away Team.

Both Little and Topliffe have utilized their musical talents to respond to current events in the past, having produced the songs Get Out and Vote and Say His Name together. The matter of voting is especially something Little feels strongly about. In addition to her career as a producer and recording artist, Little is also a documentary filmmaker, and produced the film Electile Dysfunction which reviewed issues with electronic voting machines in the 2004 election. She shared that she feels Raise Your Voice Up is the ideal soundtrack for Americans as they vote this fall.

The brainchild of Cube Art Fair, this exhibition featured 100 of works of art displayed on 50 electronic billboards throughout the city.

UCSB’s Carsey-Wolf Center to present “Subversives” film series of moderated discussions over Zoom UBVERSIVE FILMS HAVE BEEN A FEATURE OF CINEMA since the Lumiere brothers amazed audiences in the late 19th century. Today, in an age of upheaval that has so many of us on edge, we need films that tweak our social and political norms.

Now, just in time, UC Santa Barbara’s Carsey-Wolf Center (CWC) is presenting its “Subversives” discussion series featuring five films spanning 70 years and three countries.

Beginning with Sorry to Bother You and its satire of American capitalism and white corporate culture, the series invites people to view the films on their own and then join a moderated conversation about them.

The discussion of Sorry to Bother You took place on October 13th.

Director Boots Riley talked about the film with Miguel Penabella, Miguel Penabella a Ph.D. candidate in UCSB’s Department of Film and Media Studies.

Penabella, who conceived the “Subversives” series during a yearlong practicum with CWC director Patrice Petro and associate director Emily Zinn, said he was interested in films that would highlight politically and ideologically subversive films such as Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator of 1940, which lampooned Adolf Hitler.

“The decision to screen that film was to reflect on the effectiveness and legacy of using comedy to critique fascism, which is a debate that continues today across many works throughout different political contexts,” he

said. “I also wanted to imagine a broader, expansive idea of ‘Subversives’ as well, including films that may be aesthetically or commercially subversive or works that may have generated a cult following, which is why we chose selections from Pee-wee’s Playhouse, itself groundbreaking for how it blends live action, puppetry, stop-motion animation, and claymation.”

In Sorry to Bother You, Penabella said he was drawn to Riley’s outsider status as a filmmaker. With October’s final days upon us, we need, we want to experience something positive, promising, and inspiring. Here is a sweet and savory culture dish I want to serve you, cooked by the one-and-only Yayoi Kusama. Above is a deliciously appealing photo of her sculptures PUMPKIN, 2015 exhibited at David Zwirner Gallery. Let’s cross our fingers that at upcoming Halloween festivities we will enjoy real pumpkin pie and will toast and pray for a hopeful future.

Once again, here are the most important things for all us to do in the upcoming weeks – WE MUST REGISTER AND WE MUST VOTE.

HE MOMENT I OPENED THE PACKAGE which came from the Sam Francis Foundation, I was charmed and even a little bit seduced by the design of its new publication, The Space of Effusion: Sam Francis in Japan by Richard Speer. Ashamed to admit, until I opened this book, I was unaware of Sam Francis’s (1923-1994) time spent in Japan where he traveled first in 1957.

Following his first visit, Francis “established studios and residences there (in Japan) and became active in a circle of avant-garde artists, writers, filmmakers, architects, and composers.”

Going through the multiple reproductions and photos, gave me a sensation that I’m traveling along with Francis to Japan. Lucky for us Angelenos, we are going to have a unique experience of seeing major works by Sam Francis influenced by his experience and time spent in Japan. In its recent announcement, LACMA Gertrud Kauder’s discovered portrait paintings, sitters unknown. informs us about its upcoming exhibition (2021) of Sam Francis’s art influenced by his extensive time spent in Japan in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Another discovery, this time not in my mailbox, but in my email inbox, was Sam Francis, The Bound and the Unbound, 1984. Five-panel two-sided folding screen. a heartbreaking story about a Jewish artist, Gertrud Kauders (1883-1942), who in fear of her art being destroyed

by Nazis, hid her paintings and drawings behind the walls of her friend’s home in Prague. Now, nearly 80 years later, during the demolition of this house, hundreds of Gertrud Kauder’s beautiful paintings and sketches were discovered hidden behind the walls and under the floorboards.

Take a look at some of these paintings with their wonderfully, energetic brushstrokes. They are informal portraits, mostly done in just one sitting, fully capturing the character of the person. Most of the Kauders’ family fled Patty Chang, Milk Debt, 2020, video still. TRT: 53 min. the country in fear of Nazi invasion and urged her to do the same, but she chose to stay. After being identified as Jewish, she was transported in May 1942 to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. As a rare exception, this tragic story, has an unexpected, positive development. 80 years after Kauders’ death, her art and her spirit are back to life, to inform, and yes, to inspire us.

Now back to California. 18th Street Art Center in Santa Monica is ready to open next week a solo exhibition by LA artist, Patty Chang. Her multipart video project, Milk Debt consists of “videos of lactating women pumping their breast milk as they recite lists of fears drawn from multiple communities across different geographical regions.” I would assume that some people might find the image of Discovered paintings by Gertrud Kauders.

Researchers model the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in various temperatures and relative humidities in typical indoor situations

INTER IS ON ITS WAY. And in this year of coronavirus, with it comes the potential for a second wave of COVID-19. Add in flu season and our tendency to head inside and close our windows to the cold, wet weather, and it appears the next several months are going to present us with new health challenges.

UC Santa Barbara researchers Yanying Zhu and Lei Zhao hope to arm people with better knowledge of how SARS-CoV-2 spreads as the seasons change. Their new study investigates the secret of this virus’s unusual success: its transmissibility, or how it manages to get from host to host. The dominant mode, it turns out, changes according to environmental conditions.

Yanying Zhu “Back at the beginning of April a lot of people were wondering if COVID would go away in the summer, in the warmer weather,” said Zhu, a professor of mechanical engineering and one of the authors of a paper that appears in the journal Nano Letters. “And so we started to think about it from a heat transfer point of view, because that’s what our expertise is.”

The virus, of course, did not disappear during the summer as hoped, and in fact COVID cases across the country continued to climb. To understand how the novel coronavirus manages to persist in circumstances in which the flu virus fails, Zhu, Zhao, and colleagues modeled different temperatures and relative humidities along a continuum from hot and dry to cold and humid in typical 822773_TheVoice_v1_090320.pdf 1 9/8/2020 4:17:14 PM indoor spaces, where the virus is distributed by normal speech and

breathing — and, according to the paper, where people “only sneeze or cough into a tissue or their elbows.” To these scenarios they added emerging knowledge about the highly contagious microbe; in particular, how long it remains infectious outside a host.

The results are sobering. For one thing, respiratory droplets — the most common mode of transmission — don’t obey our social distancing guidelines.

“We found that in most situations, respiratory droplets travel longer distances than the six-foot social distance recommended by the CDC,” Zhu said. This effect is increased in the cooler and more humid environments to distances of up to six meters (19.7 feet) before falling to the ground in places such as walk-in refrigerators and coolers, where temperatures are low and humidity is high to keep fresh meat and produce from losing water in storage. In addition to its ability to travel farther, the virus is particularly persistent in cooler temperatures, remaining “infectious from several minutes to longer than a day in various environments,” according to several published studies.

“This is may be an explanation for those super-spreading events that have been reported at multiple meat processing plants,” she said.

At the opposite extreme, where it is hot and dry, respiratory droplets more easily evaporate. But what they leave behind are tiny virus fragments that join the other aerosolized virus particles that are shed as part of speaking, coughing, sneezing, and breathing.

“These are very tiny particles, usually smaller than ten microns,” said lead author Lei Zhao, who is a postdoctoral researcher in the Zhu Lab. “And they can suspend in the air for hours, so people can take in those particles by simply breathing.

“So in summer, aerosol transmission may be more significant compared to droplet contact, while in winter, droplet contact may

be more dangerous,” he continued. “This means that depending on the local environment, people may need to adopt different adaptive measures to prevent the transmission of this disease.” This could mean, for example, greater social distancing if the room is cool and humid, or finer masks and air filters during hot, dry spells.

Hot and humid environments, and cold and dry ones, did not differ significantly between aerosol and droplet distribution, according to the researchers.

The quantitative descriptions of virus propagation under varying local conditions could serve as useful guidance for decision-makers and the general public alike in our efforts to keep the spread to a minimum.

“Combined with our study, we think we can maybe provide design guidelines for the optimal filtering for facial masks,” said Zhao, adding that the research could be used to quantify real exposure to the virus — how much virus could land on one’s body over a certain period of exposure. This knowledge could, in turn, lead to better strategies for airflow and ventilation to prevent virus accumulation. In addition, the insights, according to the study, “may shed light on the course of development of the current pandemic, when combined with systematic epidemiological studies.”

Research on this paper was conducted also by Yuhang Qi and Prof. Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz at UC Santa Barbara, and Prof. Yi Cui at Stanford University.
