A storied model and movie star, Isabella Rossellini represents a startling example of self reinvention. Born into European film royalty as the daughter of director Roberto Rossellini and actor Ingrid Bergman, her own performances are some of the definitive images in film. After a successful career in acting and modeling, she earned a master’s degree in animal behavior and now creates unique and humorous works of performance art based on her research. Known for her philanthropic efforts in animal conservation among other areas, Rossellini runs an organic farm in Bellport, New York. As former muse and partner to artists like David Lynch, Martin Scorsese and Gary Oldman, Rossellini has stories to share and ideas of her own about the trials and tribulations of a life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

David Gergen Lectures On Public Service
By Mark M. Whitehurst / VOICEA constitutional amendment put on the ballot by the Legislature. It expressly protects reproductive freedom, consistent with existing California laws and with rights in the state Constitution.
STAKING
AMERICA’S FUTURE ON PASSING THE TORCH OF LEADERSHIP, David Gergen’s recent lecture presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures inspired and challenged a full house at the Granada Theater last week.
PROP. 31
In 2020, California passed a law banning the sale of flavored tobacco products, e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes, at stores and vending machines. A YES is a vote to keep the ban in place. A NO vote would repeal the ban. Prop 31 is an important step to protect the health and safety of Californians.
Politics as usual was the furthest from Gergen’s thoughts as he opened his talk with a charge to all Americans to embrace the need for vision and leadership training, as he referred to stories from his latest best-selling book Hearts Touched with Fire: How Great Leaders Are Made. Gergen is the founder of the Harvard Center for Public Leadership and former White House advisor to four presidents.
PROP. 31
“The culture has to change to... service to the country — it is not about power,” stated Gergen forcefully.

GOLETA MEASURE B
Would raise the sales tax rate by 1%, or 1 cent per dollar spent. Beginning in 2024, providing approximately $10,600,000 annually until ended by voters. Currently Goleta receives less than a tenth of its 7.75% sales tax, but the increase would all go to the city for much needed services.
Gergen illustrated this thought with the fact seven presidents in the last century worn a uniform and held a different sense of national focus and service to the country. He followed up by noting the need for a new consciousness focused on service to the nation beyond the military, sighting the federal Civilian Conservation Corp, the need for work in hospitals, schools, and infrastructure projects. He described a call to discover new forms of service, “Just as some volunteer for military service, others should volunteer for civilian service… the republic doesn’t come free — we have to do something about it.”

Speaking on politics, Gergen recalled, “Tip O’Neal and Ronald Reagan walked across the aisle… got things done… and knew how to leave the divide aside.”

He emphasized three main points that are necessary for the needed transformation to occur: For current leaders to recognize the need to pass the torch; with tough times ahead, to open our eyes to hope; and, as older leaders step back, we should step up to assist new leaders.
“We need to encourage new leaders like Greta Thumberg, a 15-year-old who has mobilized millions of people, and Malala, who suffered three shots to the head and continued on and became the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in history,” said Gergen. “We should take note of the black women who have grabbed the moral high ground.”

One question was: “What leader has inspired you?” Gergen responded that the best mentoring he had ever received was not in Washington, but rather, was in the Deep South where he interned in 1960 and attended a KKK meeting to find out what it was all about and barely came out alive.
Gergen called out the strength of the UCSB Arts & Lectures program in regards to leadership, “The UCSB A&L program has been one of the foremost forums in America.”
Near the closing the of the evening Gergen made a statement about facing the future, “Adversity should not be our enemy, but a source of strength.”
Introducing Gergen and leading the Q&A portion of the evening was the newly appointed Caitlin O’Hara, Director of Public Lectures & Special Initiatives at UCSB Arts & Lectures.

A PROGRAM TO DEVELOP FAMILY SELF SUFFICIENCY, devised by the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara, honored 17 graduates on October 17th, at the Presidio Springs Community Room located at 721 Laguna Street.
The Family Self Sufficiency Program is a voluntary five year program in which an Individual Training and Services Plan is developed with each participant to design a clear path of specific goals and objectives in order to achieve living wage employment and gain economic self-sufficiency. The program is available to families who are part of the Section 8 Housing program.
This year, the 17 graduates collectively increased the earned income in their households by $339,301 and collected an aggregate total of $229,889 in escrow savings. The escrow account is a financial incentive the FSS participants accumulate during their participation in FSS and it’s the result of the increases in their earned income. Three out of the 17 families are off of Section 8.
Out of the 17 graduates, one graduate, Delia Anguiano became a homeowner. Another graduate, Lisa Tejeda, whose goal was to open her own catering business, Tacos Alegria, was successful in her ventures and catered the event.
The FSS program currently has 135 participants and is supported by both Housing Authority staff and the FSS Program Coordinating Committee, comprised of a network of 23 local businesses/service providers including Family Service Agency, Workforce Resource Center, American Riviera Bank, Department of Rehabilitation, SBCC School of Continued Education, Union Bank, World Financial Group, Girls Inc, Women’s Economic Ventures, CommUnify, Spherion and Transition House. https://hacsb.org/family-self-sufficiency

Bipartisan Bill Introduced to Support Veteran Survivors of Sexual Assault CITING
STIGMA AND LATE REPORTING TRENDS, a new bill was introduced to address the needs of U.S. veterans who have experienced sexual trauma during their service. The legislation was introduced by local Congressman Salud Carbajal and Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon, making it a bipartisan bill. The bill, which was introduced this week, would update how the Department of Veterans Affairs calculates benefits related to those injuries.
“Earlier this term, my office and I had the chance to work with a veteran from the Central Coast who had finally mustered up the courage to report her own history of military sexual trauma more than 25 years after the incident, only to be told her benefits would only be considered back to the day she spoke up,” said Rep. Carbajal.
The Veteran Restitution and Justice Act would change the effective date of a veteran’s claim to allow veterans who experience sexual trauma during their service to receive retroactive disability benefits, starting from the date after their separation from service rather than the claim file date.
The VA estimates that one in three female veterans and one in 50 male veterans experienced sexual trauma in some form during their service.
Congressman Carbajal served eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty service during the Gulf War in 1992, where he was mobilized to Jacksonville, North Carolina. Congressman Bacon served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly 30 years, retiring as a Brigadier General in 2014.
The two lawmakers serve in leadership of the House’s For Country Caucus, a non-partisan group of military veterans serving in Congress who are dedicated to working together in a nonpartisan way to create a more productive government.
Putin Declares Military Control in Occupied Areas In Ukraine
OVERRULING INTERNATIONAL LAW, Putin has declared the Russian military as the ruling body in annexed regions of Ukraine, using the maxim “martial law.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking to his security council, announced on Wednesday, October 19th, the immediate declaration of martial law in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk, Ukraine.
Former Chief Justice of the United States, William Rehnquist, described “martial law” in his book, All the Laws But One this way: “Let us call the thing by its right name; it is not martial law, but martial rule. And, when we speak of it, let us speak of it as abolishing all law, and substituting the will of the military commander.”
Green Bike Markings To Be Removed From State Street Promenade
BECAUSE OF MIXED RESULTS, the green bike lanes painted on State Street are being removed by the City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department.
“Please expect traffic detours and delays at State Street intersections from Ortega Street to Victoria Street on Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21, while the markings are being removed,” stated a city press release. The city intends to minimize impacts to the public, by starting work each day at 6am with work ending each day by 5pm.
The original purpose of the green markings was to channel cyclists to the center of the street and pedestrians to the sides of the street so user movements were more predictable. However, this was not effective and the city is exploring other options for cyclists and pedestrians to coexist on the promenade.
As a reminder, please continue to be SAFE ON STATE: All road users to be alert, stop at red lights, keep a safe distance, watch your speeds, and be respectful. For more info, please watch: youtube.com/CityofSBTV

The Linda Lindas: The Next Generation of Punk
By Daisy Scott / VOICETO ELECTRIC GUITAR RIFFS AND POWERFUL DRUM RHYTHMS with confidence and endearing humor, The Linda Lindas rocked UCSB’s Campbell Hall with a solid set that really confirms “the kids are alright.” With its four members ranging from 12 to 18 years old, the all-girl group channeled joy and passion as they explored growing up, voting, cats, and other pertinent issues through their distinctly feminist, punk-rock-focused sound.
JAMMING
One look at the crowd drawn to UCSB on October 15th spoke to The Linda Lindas’ wide appeal — elementary-aged girls wearing cat ear headbands danced in their seats, their accompanying guardians and local college students bopping alongside them. Still, the night was clearly for the young and young at heart, with Girls Rock Santa Barbara acting as UCSB Arts & Lectures’ co-presenter.
With unmatched energy, The Linda Lindas playfully grooved across the stage as they performed the original hits that have launched them into rising stardom, including Growing Up, Talking to Myself, and Racist, Sexist Boy. Oh! had the crowd singing along, with all erupting into applause for Vote!, which the band prefaced by asking everyone who can to vote this fall for sake of those who can’t — in this case, three out of the four Linda Lindas.
Each number provided ample opportunities for the band to showcase their overall chemistry and individual skills, from drummer Mila de la Garza’s head-banging beats to
guitarist Lucia de la Garza’s skilled guitar solos. Both sisters demonstrated great vocal skills, shifting from lyrical refrains to invigorating choruses.
Eloise Wong, boasting cat whisker face paint and striped pants that would make David Bowie proud, roared into the microphone with a gritty edge. Bela Salazar on guitar beautifully sang a cover of Tren al Sur by Los Prisioneros, along with a couple of fun numbers inspired by her cats.
Between numbers, band members joked with the audience about staying up past their bedtime and turning in an English essay prior to the show. These comments were met with laughter and cheers, especially from the younger audience members.
Rounding out the night were two phenomenal covers that shone the spotlight on The Linda Lindas’ punk and Riot grrrl influences: The Go-Go’s quintessential Tonite, and Bikini Kill’s anthem Rebel Girl. Attendees flooded the aisles to dance and sing along to this final track, cheering the “rebel girls” that will undoubtedly help define the next generation of punk rock.
The Lincolns of Springfield at Center Stage
PRESIDENTABE LINCOLN AND HIS WIFE, MARY TODD LINCOLN, were America’s first power couple, and now the story of their romance and life together in the White House has arrived at Center Stage Theatre as a musical.
The Santa Barbara run of The Lincolns of Springfield serves as the professional world premiere of this new musical. The show is traveling from city to city across the country on its way to New York and Broadway.
Billed as the love story we never knew, The Lincolns of Springfield chronicles the story of Lincoln, known as America’s greatest president, and his beloved wife, from their first meeting through the end of the Civil War.
As a young girl, Mary declared to anyone who would listen that when she grew up she would marry a president and live in the White House. The audience is led down the highly-improbable-yet-entirely-truthful, humorous, and delightfully romantic path that leads to the courtship and marriage of the most unlikely of couples, and the fulfillment of Mary’s prediction.
The musical, directed by 12-time Tony Award nominee and four-time Tony winner Corey Brunish, opened on Oct. 12th and will run through Oct. 23rd at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara.
Brunish brings the sophistication of Broadway to Santa Barbara with his breadth of experience. He most notably produced the original Broadway musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, one of the longest running shows on Broadway for which the cast CD won a Grammy Award.
Like director Brunish, actor Matthew Patrick Davis, who plays Abe Lincoln, brings his experience on Broadway to his work on The Lincolns of Springfield, having performed in Side Show, based on the lives of conjoined twins who became famous stage performers in the 1930s. Davis has the musical talent required for his part in the Santa Barbara production. As a songwriter, he has co-written and produced songs for The Ghost and Molly McGee on the Disney Channel and T.O.T.S. on Disney Junior alongside series songwriter Rob Cantor.
Actress Deborah Robin plays Mary Todd in The Lincolns of Springfield bringing her award-winning talent to the much-loved musical. A TV, film and stage actress, she was awarded “Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, 2020-21,” for her portrayal of Doris Day in Day After Day: The Life and Music of Doris Day in the Orange County Theatre Guild Awards.
From the moment the curtain rises, audiences are drawn into two very different worlds – Mary’s tumultuous world of the antebellum South with gentility and honor juxtaposed against the backdrop of the scourge of slavery and Abe’s vibrant, fearless world of possibilities that is America’s new frontier.
Shows will be held 7:30pm, Oct. 19-22, with matinees at 1:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 23rd. Tickets are $35 at Center Stage Theater or online at https://thelincolnsofspringfield.com/

Bookworm Corner: GHOSTS! Ghostly Tales from Folklore
By Daisy Scott / VOICEFROMDISAPPEARING CHOIRS TO A CAT WHO VISITS HER OWNER FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE, Ghosts! Ghostly Tales from Folklore by Alvin Schwartz captures why ghost stories have captured readers’ imaginations for centuries. Published in 1991, the book is part of publisher HarperCollins’ “I Can Read Books” series, intended for first to third graders. Sharing seven stories, the collection strikes a delightfully spooky balance between the unsettling and the comical, introducing young readers to the concept of folktales in the process.
Schwartz’s brief foreword gets students in the mindset to enjoy the collection, directly asking if the reader believes in ghosts. Regardless of the answer, however, Schwartz emphasizes that some individuals do believe, and tell tales that are “strange and scary and fun.” The following stories express the full range of these emotions, from “The Teeny-Tiny Woman,” about an old woman who steals some dentures from a gravesite, to “A Little Green Bottle,” a more frightening tale of a boy who tricks the ghost of his bully. Silly inclusions include “Three Little Ghosts,” a poem about ghosts eating toast.
Lest young readers be too frightened, Schwartz concludes with “Ghost, Get Lost,” which teaches a common rhyme that will supposedly scare ghosts away. The book is also filled with endearing, albeit slightly creepy illustrations by Victoria Chess, which add an element of goofiness.
However, as these stories are rooted in folklore traditions, readers and teachers can approach the collection from an educational lens. The final page of the book contains details on the origins of each tale, providing insight into their respective regions and time periods. This information can spark conversations about the nature of adapting a story, or serve as a basis of comparing ghost stories from other cultures.
Curious readers may even ponder on the ghost stories they have heard in their lives, and try to discover if their themes connect to the stories in the book. After all, as this book highlights, whether or not ghosts are really out there, their stories certainly are. Happy Halloween!

An Actor Walks Into a Bar... and Then a Chair... The Play That Goes Wrong
By Daisy Scott / VOICEIN A SERIES OF INCREASINGLY ABSURD ACCIDENTS, The Play That Goes Wrong offers a comedy that is self-aware as it is hilarious. Presented by the Theatre Group at Santa Barbara City College, this sidesplitting play-within-a-play follows a troupe of amateur actors as they perform a 1920s murder mystery a la Agatha Christie — with everything that could possibly go wrong, doing so.
IMPLODING
However, with Director Saundra McClain at the helm, a cast of actors with spotless comic timing, and an almost (literally) show-stopping set, the production could not have gone more right. Performances continue through October 29th at Garvin Theatre.
Upon finding their seats, audience members are greeted by the Director of The Cornley Drama Society (Matthew Tavianini), who welcomes all to the opening night of the group’s production of The Murder at Haversham Manor Its premise adheres to classic whodunnit themes, with Inspector Carter (also played by Tavianini) interviewing affluent society members to get to the bottom of the murder of Charles Haversham (Will Muse).
Within short order, it becomes
clear that not only is this play incredibly corny, but its shoddy set will stop at nothing to thwart the actors’ performances — not that the bumbling cast needs any help in messing up their lines. Hilarity abounds as furniture collapses, props are lost, and cast members faint, building up to a slapstick finale.
It’s often remarked that it takes a great actor to convincingly play a bad one. The Theatre Group at SBCC’s talent-heavy cast proves this, with each member meeting the challenge of playing an actor playing another role. As the director/Inspector Carter, Tavianini channels the same wit he did as Detective Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express this past March. He layers this persona with frustration as he watches his company struggle, including Nicholis Sheley’s portrayal of the overeager butler Perkins (who mispronounces lines scribbled on his hand), and Muse’s victim who refuses to stay dead.
As Charles’ fiancée, Florence, McKenna Kline fills Garvin Theatre with laughter with her over-the-top wailing and burgeoning competition with Annie (Han Do), who transforms from a reluctant understudy to a fierce actress. Tyler Gilbert,
Charles’ brother, Cecil, complements this energy with a swaggering, self-impressed nature that ultimately makes his blunders all the funnier. Justin Davanzo, who plays Florence’s brother, Thomas, completes the wacky cast as an increasingly annoyed actor who remains determined that the show must go on.
An equal cast member in this madcap production is the remarkable set crafted by Scenic and Lighting Designer Patricia L. Frank, which seems to fall apart at exactly the right, wrong moments. Its impressive technical feats add an eccentric level of credibility to the stage’s antics, securing The Play That Goes Wrong as a delightfully chaotic viewing experience.

Pavane, Bacchanale, Carmina Burana – what a party!
Review by Daniel Kepl / VOICEIF SUCCESS CAN BE MEASURED IN SMILES, last weekend’s pair of Granada Theatre concerts by the combined musical forces of the Santa Barbara Symphony, Santa Barbara Choral Society, State Street Ballet, SBCC Quire of Voyces, and Music Academy Sing! Children’s Chorus was an ear-to-ear triumph.
The massive collaborative effort represented metaphorically, a catharsis and joyful sunrise. With flourishes, banners, dancers, orchestra, and choruses large and small – a combined cast of just under two hundred –Santa Barbara’s performing arts organizations gathered again, to announce they are back in the game and the 2022-2023 season is on!
Packed houses on Saturday night and at Sunday afternoon’s matinee, sipped champagne in celebration of the Santa Barbara Symphony’s 70th birthday, while also raising a collective toast to the performing arts professionalism we enjoy year-round in this community. On the program, Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane in F-Sharp minor, Op. 50 (1887), with new choreography by State Street Ballet’s Co-Artistic Director and
Resident Choreographer, William Soleau; a feisty entr’acte for the orchestra alone, Camille SaintSaëns’ Bacchanale from his opera Samson and Delilah (1877); and to end each of the two concerts with a mighty spectacle, Carl Orff’s rowdy masterpiece, Carmina Burana (1936).
The last time a collaborative musical joyride of this caliber blew the roof off the Granada Theatre was in 2015, the first successful joint presentation by Santa Barbara performing arts groups of Carl Orff’s deliciously naughty megacantata for dancers, choruses, orchestra, and soloists. Seven years later the venue is the same, professionalism and thrills a given, but important changes scenically, choreographically, and musically, have spruced up this second collaboration. The result is fresh to eyes and ears on several levels.
Tight performance standards and compelling energy marked the entire program Saturday night, charioted with vigor by Santa Barbara Symphony Music and Artistic Director Nir Kabaretti, who kept the pace and purpose of all three works on the program athletic, taut, and intellectually exciting. A stunning new cadre of young professional dancers at State Street Ballet made their debut as well, immediately dispelling any worries about the artistic bottom line, with precise yet fluid corps de ballet accuracy, with consistent finesse in execution.
The Santa Barbara Choral Society, SBCC Quire of Voyces, and Music Academy Sing! Children’s Chorus sounded particularly well-
rehearsed and tight in ensemble balance, color, and intonation. Kudos, conductors Jo Anne Wasserman, Nathan Kreitzer, and Erin McKibben. Clean staging and lighting design also enhanced the look on stage in surprising and satisfying ways.
Choreographer William Soleau illuminated visually two of the works on the program, creating elegant new choreography for Gabrielle Fauré’s Pavane in F-Sharp minor, Op. 50 (1887) a sublime movement reverie for an ensemble of six, while tweaking here and there, his original 2015 choreography for Carmina Burana, achieving a marvelously successful, if subtle, transformation of the 2015 original.
Perhaps it was the lighting design of Sammy Jelinek, or some subtle changes in wardrobe by Nicole Thompson. Certainly, the confident and precise ensemble, solo, and duo dancing throughout the evening by State Street Ballet’s new gaggle of stunningly versatile artists contributed to the sense that the 2022 Carmina Burana was entirely fresh. Salutations, State Street Ballet principals Amara Galloway and Herñan Montenegro (The Couple), Marina Fliagina (Fortuna), and Leeza Domrachev (The Swan).
Vocal soloists for Carmina Burana, soprano Jana McIntyre, countertenor Randall Scotting,
and baritone Valdis Jansons, made much of their often-perilous musical roles. Orff’s writing for these three is mercilessly virtuosic. Vocal resilience, fortitude, intelligent coloration, and high skill marked the performances of all three.
The Santa Barbara Symphony and all the participating choirs except the children’s choir, which did their bits on the dance stage, could be seen perched handsomely on a platform behind and above the on-stage dance area. A scrim just in front of the orchestra allowed for visual projections and other special lighting effects as needed, while also making slightly mysterious and intriguing, the visual illusion of an orchestra suspended in midair.
Conductor Nir Kabaretti, smack in the center of it all, commanded a ringside overview of the dance action going on below. Handy for the Fauré, Kabaretti’s elevated position and visibility was crucial during the massive and often tricky sections of Carmina Burana.
A bonus made particularly apparent during the orchestra’s elegantly cosmopolitan performance of the Bacchanale scene from Camille Saint-Saëns’ opera Samson and Dellilah (1877): being elevated, thus closer to the acoustic shell’s ceiling panels, the orchestral sound projecting into the hall seemed particularly clean, balanced, articulate, and detailed.

Community Asked to Take in Foster Dogs Prior to Shelter Renovations
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18TH - “We’ve got to move 30-40 dogs out of those kennels before next Monday when the project begins,” said Jill Anderson with Santa Barbara County Animal Services.
Santa Barbara Co. Animal Services is looking for temporary foster homes (or adoptions) prior to a renovation project at a Santa Maria shelter. Food and vet costs covered for fosters. You can see the dogs online or in person. The project is in Santa Maria, but you can get dogs from the Goleta shelter and it will help reduce the numbers overall. Go online or in person and you will see many loveable choices. www.countyofsb.org/415/Animal-Services

Inflation Already Slowing!
By Harlan Green, Special to VOICE, OctTHEATLANTA FEDERAL RESERVE has just upped their estimate of Q3 economic growth to +2.9 percent after two quarters of negative growth. Why are they thinking that economic growth will resume when the Fed says it intends to push interest rates even higher?
Part of the problem, according to renowned economist Professor Jeremy Siegal of the Wharton School in a recent CNBC interview, is the Fed bases its outlook on inflation indicators six months to a year behind actual inflation trends.
They should instead base their actions on current economic indicators, says Siegal, such as the real money supply and disposable incomes, which have been falling sharply. The amount of money in circulation controls much of the economic activity of banks as well as consumers and higher interest rates will shrink the M2 money supply even further.

The Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow model estimate for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) is also based on actual economic indicators—such as employment and wholesale trade. As of October 7th, its latest forecast for the third quarter of 2022 is 2.9 percent, up from 2.7 percent on October 5th.

“After this morning’s employment situation report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the wholesale trade report from the U.S. Census Bureau,” said the GDPNow press release, “the ‘nowcast’ of third quarter real personal consumption expenditures growth and third-quarter real gross private domestic investment
growth increased from 1.1 percent and -3.6 percent, respectively, to 1.3 percent and -3.4 percent, respectively.”
Part of the problem may be the Atlanta Fed looks at numbers affecting all Americans vs. Fed Chair Powell looking at numbers that rely on indexes that measure data affecting 30 to 40 percent of our population, such as rents and food prices that have seen the highest price increases.
There are also other leading indicators of inflation, including commodity prices, supply times, the value of the dollar BUXX, 0.25percent DXY, 0.16 percent, says Nutting. Almost all of these have peaked and are now declining. These are other signs that
inflationary pressures are lessening.
“The biggest risk to the economy is that the Fed and other central banks will tighten too much, according to 55 percent of economists surveyed by the National Association of Business Economics,” he said.
If economic growth is positive for the rest of this year, it may be a sign that the actual inflation indicators Professor Siegal and Nutting advocate may have bottomed, inflation already tamed, and economic growth has resumed, but the ‘official’ indicators won’t corroborate it until next year.
Will the Federal Reserve realize this in time to avert another recession?

Adam Sandler’s new film Hustle & Film Fest Tucson
Review by Robert F. Adams, Special to VOICEATOUCHING STORYLINE
ENVELOPES Adam Sandler's character, Stanley Sugerman, in a new basketball themed movie, Hustle. The film sees Jeremiah Zagar directing Sandler's Sugerman, a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers, in a screenplay by Taylor Materne and Will Fetters. It's a fastpaced sports movie funded by and showing on Netflix.
An in-person screening was presented by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Cinema Society with Sandler as an interview guest. As an actor to be reckoned with, Sandler continues to challenge his career with a non-comedic role, and here he builds on Uncut Gems to deliver another naturalistic performance in a tale about the behind-the-scenes efforts of bigleague Basketball recruiting. At the center is a tall tale, a credible coming of age set within the urban environments of both Philly and Spain.
Hustle owes a debt of gratitude to the Rocky film series as the film delivers emotional content and shares some of the locations. The film contains whizzing cinematography and editing appropriate to the world of professional basketball and offers a rare inside glimpse into the business dynamics of the NBA.
Leading off with a casual, but solid presence, Adam Sandler shines as the harried recruiter as he steps into a ground-up coaching role, with no guarantees of success. Opposite him are Queen Latifah as his wise and streetsmart wife as well as Juan Hernangómez (who plays for the Toronto Raptors) playing the naïve and hot-headed Spanish champ of street basketball in a narrative that takes the audience on an unlikely journey to an NBA rookie placement.
The film also has a strong performance from actor Ben Foster, as the main antagonist to the Sandler’s unlikely father figure. The film also has a strong cameo from Robert Duvall, who proves again that he is one of the strongest presences in the acting business. A standout foil, too, is Anthony Edwards, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves; he sets the right tone of competition and completely antagonizes the recruit from Spain. Cameos from the basketball world include Trae Young, Seth Curry, Julius Erving, and Shaq O’Neal, among others. The film also features Boban Marjanovic in a humorous recruiting scene, with a deftly played gag.
SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling welcomed Sandler onstage, with an audience standing ovation
following the screening. According to Sandler, “During the pandemic, we jammed on the script, developed on Zoom. The director shot the basketball (scenes) four different ways, with cinematographer Zach Mulligan, the ball scenes look cool, glad I’m in this movie…I love basketball, named the main character Stanley after my Dad, who was a stern coach but pushed you to be your best. I did a lot of learning from scouts, and tried to be true to the character… we shot the movie in two parts. Working with Robert Duvall was incredible, we’ve been friends for a lot of years, and on the set he talked to me about Dustin Hoffman who was his roommate, and making The Godfather, with funny stories about James Caan. Duvall has so much knowledge, he can dance, play the guitar, he can do anything.”
On the Road:
Sometimes VOICE gets invited to outof-town film festivals, and we were are delighted to explore downtown Tucson and the setting for a very selective weekend of independent and international film events and programming. This dynamic weekend film festival is typically held in mid-October and offers a celebration of the film arts. The festival was started by Herb Stratford and Kerry Stratford, and brings together a hard-working band of festival organizers, sponsors, and a small army of volunteers to bring vitality to the downtown Tucson scene. Post-pandemic, the festival offered a full in-person series of events including an outdoor screening in a park of the documentary Finding Her Beat along with a live Taiko drum performance by local drumming group Odaiko Sonora.
Festival highlights included an Italian documentary Cinemari, that showed a team going to rural Italian hill towns to show movies on an outdoor screen. This film, as directed by Julian Civiero, was also a tribute to the history, science, and art from cinema projectionists in Italy.
This was followed the next day with Last Film Show, directed by Pan Nalin, about a nine-year old discovering ways to see and show movies. The film also touched on projectionists and managed to be an intriguing glimpse into the yearning to escape from poverty, some of the same themes that the great Satiajit Ray explored in his legendary series, The Apu Trilogy. An extraordinary narrative film, Last Film Show should have received more attention at the film’s release in 2021 as the movie combines soaring cinematography with riveting themes.
There were also informative and entertaining workshops with independent animator Bill Plympton, who has created a body of work that is surreal, funny, and surprising over the years. The local audience came away with a better understanding of how hand-drawn animated shorts and features are made and distributed. On the last evening, the audience was treated to a screening of the 1928 silent film
masterpiece, The Passion of Joan of Arc. The film integrated a live chorus, and a foreboding new score accompanied by a string quartet. The project was launched by composer George Sarah in 2010, and proved to be a delightful conclusion to this thoughtful festival.
Other worthwhile films included Róise and Frank, directed by Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, about a widow finding kinship with a lovely stray dog. Gods of Mexico also screened, a documentary looking at the landscapes of rural, almost forgotten places, that was directed by Helmut Dosantos. The festival also featured the light comedy Four Samosas from Director Ravi Kapoor, and a program featuring Phil Rosenthal was shown to a sell-out audience. Rosenthal is the creator of the sitcom Everyone Loves Raymond, and now is the entertaining host of the travel-food show, Somebody Feed Phil, currently on Netflix. A wonderful weekend of evening programs, Love Block, a Tucson redevelopment firm, was the presenting sponsor, along with the Caliber Group, AC Marriot Hotels and other businesses and cuisine purveyors. Based on their sixth edition, this community-driven festival should grow and prosper in the coming years ahead.

An Extravaganza! SB’s Harbor & Seafood Festival
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICEAt last!
The Harbor & Seafood Festival was back last Saturday, October 15th. It was the Santa Barbara Harbor’s 2022 blow out, second debut event designed by the Waterfront Department and the Harbor Merchant’s Association to make up for the unwelcome sabbatical of the last years. If pedestrian traffic was any indication, revelers agreed, as even the May/Gray, June/Gloom weather didn’t stop them from joining the celebration, shopping in the booths, listening to music, and noshing on fresh seafood.
To be honest, I hadn’t a clue that so many people even lived along the South and Central Coasts!
It seemed like everyone had awaited the return of Santa Barbara’s traditional Seafood Festival, visitors and locals alike! The crowd, streaming to the harbor from all directions, was proof positive and the over 50 vendors along the harbor walkways, parking lots, pier, and loading dock were happy too. The huge selection of seafood on display caught by local fisherman included lobster, albacore, crab, fish tacos, paella, lobster, and sea urchins, as well as an assortment of other delicious delights.
Beneath the tents lining the parking lots and alleyways, a colorful selection of clothing, jewelry, beachwear, and an eye-popping assortment of hats could be found. Adding to the fun, the face painting booth was a popular spot for both kids and their parents. Much of the party congregated around the entertainment, with visitors singing and dancing to the rousing beat of Juan Dolor, Spencer the Gardner, and Cornerstone playing live on the main stage. I’ll have to admit I was tempted to do the same, but I lacked the character (too chicken)!
Libation – the adult variety – was available when the audience needed hydration as they rocked along with the music.
The Seafood Festival, the largest all-harbor event of the year, requires months of coordination.
Think of all the work involved in setting up and managing a massive party hosting 15,000 plus guests … Whew! Thanks to the teamwork of hundreds of volunteers, the event flowed seamlessly from 10am to 5pm on the designated day. Work behind the scenes such as arranging the parking for hundreds of cars (just for starters!) takes coordination and was handled by the Waterfront Department’s parking staff in partnership with Santa Barbara City Collage, the Yacht Club, and the surrounding parking lots. The main attraction, the presentation of enormous amounts of seafood, involved volunteer fisherman operating the seafood booths, along with a host of volunteers in every display booth along the walkways and lots. Between listening to the bands, oogling the wares on display, and pulling out my wallet numerous times, it was time to sit down… but everything that even remotely resembled a seat was now occupied.
I found refuge with legendary divers Don Barthelmess and Leslie Leany in their booth introducing the planned statue of a diver to be placed at the entrance of the harbor walkway honoring the history and tradition of diving in Santa Barbara.
Seems that I walked right past him as I was making my way to view the seafood venues. On the other hand, with so many people, I wouldn’t have found him anyway in a booth surrounded by hungry seafood enthusiasts! Wiltshire credited his team for most of the work, as well as the success, of the festival, sharing, “Huge kudos go to the Waterfront Facilities Maintenance staff who single-handedly took care of the setup. Crews were in at 4:45am on Saturday braving the rain in the dark and didn’t leave until late Saturday night. Also thanks to our local commercial fisherman who handle the lobster boiling operation as well as the sale of uni and other local catch.” He added, “Although it was a little foggy and rainy in the morning, it turned out to be a perfect day.”
And indeed it was! Hope you all enjoyed it too. See you at the Harbor & Seafood Festival next year...

Santa Barbara Celebrates Día de Los Muertos
By Daisy Scott / VOICEMARIGOLDS AND INTRICATE CALAVERAS will soon adorn windows across town as community members prepare to observe Día de Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. Observed annually on November 1st and 2nd, Día de Los Muertos is a time for families and friends to gather and remember their loved ones through personal and community celebrations.
VIBRANT
Originating in Mexico, Día de Los Muertos centers on the belief that the spirits of deceased loved ones can return to visit their families during this two-day period. To welcome them, families decorate their gravesites and ofrendas with marigolds, candles, food, and items the departed appreciated in life. A key element of the holiday’s ideology is that death is a part of life, meaning that while grief may be present, Día de Los Muertos is ultimately an uplifting time to honor and cherish loved ones.
This fall, locals of all ages are invited to partake in this celebration of love and life at these joyful community events and altars.

Return of the Butterflies at Paradise Found
Let your loved ones’ memories be carried by a host of butterflies swirling around the community altar on display from Friday, October 21st through November 2nd at Paradise Found. Created by local artist Rebecca Zendejas, who drew inspiration from the Gaelic festival Samhain in addition to Día de Los Muertos, viewing butterflies as a symbol of hope and transformation ideal for the holiday. All visitors are welcome to contribute by writing loved ones’ names on paper eucalyptus leaves, which will be attached to butterfly clips “flying” above the altar on colorful, bell-adorned strings.
Open daily from 11am to 6pm at 17 E Anapamu St. www.paradisefoundsb.com

Day of the Dead at SBMA
Celebrate the creativity of young artists and make your own Día de Los Muertos crafts when the Santa Barbara Museum of Art hosts its annual Day of the Dead Free Family Day from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, October 23rd. View altars created by dozens of local students through SBMA’s outreach initiatives and other community programs, boasting handpainted calaveras, paper flowers, paintings, photographs, and more.
Visitors will also be able to engage with interactive altars, including an altar designed by Santa Barbara Youth Poet Laureate Madeline Miller commemorating our shared planet and honoring the victims of climate change.
“Climate change is often discussed in terms of the damage humans are doing to the earth, as if it were a separate entity from us, but ultimately we will go extinct as a species, just as much as the blue whales or monarch butterflies will, unless we make the planet sustainable,” shared Miller. “The altar honors the lives we have already lost, as well as the lives we are going to lose as the ruling institutions continue to ignore this crisis.”
“I hope that however viewers of the piece react, that they will be compelled to think,” she concluded.
Another interactive altar, created by SBMA’s Teen Master Class members, responds to how bridges are captured and portrayed through the museum’s varied collections.
Family-friendly art workshops will be held all day, including opportunities to craft skull charms and miniature altars on the front terrace from 11am to 3pm. Inside, practice Día de Los Muertos printmaking at the Family Resource Center between 12pm to 4pm. www.sbma.net

Arturo Tello & John Wullbrandt
Dos Arbolitos Exhibition
Through November 27th
Dos Arbolitos
Two small trees have grown tall to stand among the mighty Oak Group. Co-Foundering member Arturo Tello has been joined by his friend and fellow painter John Wullbrandt to share selected paintings that illustrate their passion for our environment. Both artists have deep roots in local land preservation and conservation efforts. The mutual support they enjoy has been recognized by Santa Barbara Fine Art Gallery with this two person exhibition.
