Discover Santa Barbara, the City of Friendly Ghosts!

MMERSED IN HISTORIC TRADITIONS AND BUILDINGS, Santa Barbara is a city that relishes its past – although this past may not be as distant as one thinks, as revealed by Professor Julie Ann Brown through her Santa Barbara Ghost Tours. Hosted in downtown Santa Barbara, Brown’s tours are a compelling combination of history and mystery, presenting a charming experience for not only the Halloween season, but year-round.

“The spirit of Santa Barbara’s past has never died, it’s just changed form,” shared Brown. “And to really fall in love with our city again, it’s important to discover its stories, especially for — I think — residents.”

Brown started gathering ghost stories working on the Queen Mary while attending the University of Southern California.

Later, she moved to the Santa Barbara area, and has taught marketing at Santa Barbara City College for the last 19 years.

She also serves as SBCC’s Department Chair of Business Administration.

Five years ago, Brown decided to re-visit her early passion. A volunteer docent at Old Mission Santa Barbara, she became familiar

with the area’s history, she began wondering about Santa Barbara’s ghosts.

For nine months, she dove deep into local history, unearthing newspaper articles, old books, and collecting oral histories from residents.

Eventually, Brown discovered that the downtown area has a great deal of spiritual activity.

She decided to share local ghosts’ stories and guide people through their own paranormal experiences by launching Santa Barbara Ghost Tours in 2017. An early experience with a psychic on a tour confirmed Brown’s theory that this is “the city of friendly ghosts.”

“She saw all these ghosts from every period, every ethnicity, walking down Cabrillo, through people, laughing, and then up State Street,” said Brown about her experience with the psychic.

“That validated what I had done with my research, that downtown Santa Barbara and the beach area is where friendly ghosts that have been here in the past, or lived here in the past, come back just to check things out.”

Today, Brown knows Ghost Tours Founder Julie Ann Brown over 150 local ghost stories, allowing her to personalize tours depending on attendees’ ages and prior knowledge.

She starts her tours by asking participants to share their past paranormal experiences.

Following this, she launches into reviewing Santa Barbara’s history, highlighting relevant details as the group walks through familiar sites such as El Paseo Restaurant, El Presidio, and the former location of Santa Barbara’s Chinatown.

Brown’s stories are intriguing, including tales of buried treasure and ghost sightings of well known figures such as José de la Guerra. Others are more unsettling, like the brutal murder of a woman where City Hall now stands. A skilled storyteller, Brown transports attendees to whichever period she discusses, also pointing out opportunities for participants to capture glimpses of visiting spirits with their cell phone cameras.

Beyond her traditional tours, Brown partners with three local wineries to offer special wine tasting ghost tours. She also provides snacks and spiritual protection items to all tour guests.

Ultimately, Brown hopes these tours remind community members and tourists alike the value of acknowledging those who came before us.

“This is a pun, but it brings Santa Barbara to life,” commented Brown. “The past is no longer forgotten for either residents or visitors or future residents. The past is coming to life again before it’s forgotten or destroyed...”

JLSB Honors 2020-2021 Sustainer and Woman of the Year

MARTHA TOWNSEND has been named the JLSB 2020-21 Sustainer of the Year. Holding over 25 years of experience as a businesswoman, marketer, and entrepreneur, Townsend is a dedicated and active local volunteer. She has been a member of JLSB since 1998, serving as its President between 2008-2009. Her volunteer experiences have further included sitting on the Women’s Economic Venture board, the Santa Barbara Zoo Planned Giving committee, and the Jodi House Capital campaign cabinet. Currently, Townsend gives back by serving on the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation Plaza Project Cabinet and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women’s Board.

EGINNING MONDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner will expand efforts to restore services along its travel corridor. There will also be a significant series of schedule adjustments to the current train schedules to space journeys more evenly throughout the day. In doing so, the Pacific Surfliner hopes to improve reliability and connectivity for individuals travelling between Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo.

“We are excited to take this next step towards schedule restoration and optimization as we work to return to the robust service that we’ve provided in the past,” said Donna DeMartino, Managing Director of the LOSSAN Agency, which manages the Pacific Surfliner. “We will continue to work with our partners to develop and implement operating strategies that will maximize rail services across the corridor.”

As of Monday, an additional round-trip journey that travels the entire length of the train’s travel corridor will be added to the Pacific Surfliner’s schedule. Moreover, the majority of train arrival and departure times will shift to be evenly spaced throughout the day. Accordingly, passengers should be aware that many train numbers will also change with this schedule shift. Finally, the Pacific Surfliner’s schedule will once again be consistent on both the weekends and weekdays.

Community News Atkins Joins Habitat Santa Barbara

ZOE ATKINS has assumed the position of Operations & Volunteer Engagement Coordinator with Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County. A UCSB alumna, Atkins is extremely passionate about affordable housing within our region.

In 2013, she expanded her horizons on this cause by going on a “Learn & Build” Habitat for Humanity International trip to Mozambique. She also has worked as an educator and regional coordinator for Peoples’ Self-Help Housing over the past three years. With Critical Blood Shortage, Vitalant Encourages Blood Donations

N A STARTLING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR NATIONWIDE PATIENT CARE, the nonprofit blood services provider Vitalant has announced that its blood and platelet supplies have dropped to their lowest levels since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, type O blood — the most frequently transfused blood type in emergencies – has fallen below a two-day supply, threatening to impact patient care and services. Accordingly, Vitalant is encouraging all eligible donors to give blood now.

“Compared to the beginning of the pandemic, patient needs are stronger than we expected,” said Cliff Numark, Vitalant Senior Vice President. “We’re seeking about 1,000 additional volunteer donors to make and keep an appointment each week for the foreseeable future to ensure Vitalant can help trauma victims, cancer patients and critical surgeries.”

Vitalant serves approximately 900 hospitals nationwide, including more than 25 located along the Central Coast. However, blood supplies are currently being sent out faster than volunteers are donating additional blood. There is also a great shortage of platelet donations, which largely support cancer patients while they are undergoing treatments.

Individuals interested in giving blood do not need to wait for any period of time after receiving a flu shot or COVID-19 vaccine. Walk-in donations are welcome, although appointments are encouraged.

Hillside Observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

NDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF RAISING AWARENESS FOR DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT ISSUES AND PROMOTING INCLUSIVITY, Hillside has announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October. A Santa Barbara residential care facility for adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Hillside currently houses 59 community members. By participating in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the facility supports the campaign’s purpose of educating the public about not only disability employment issues, but the contributions of workers with disabilities nationwide.

“Hillside is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Hillside President/CEO Michael Rassler. “We want to spread the important message that all perspectives should be valued, including those of individuals with disabilities. Some of our residents participate in community employment, and are highly valued team members. Inclusion plays a central role in community integration and overall community health, as well as helping people with disabilities feel fully accepted and welcome. It’s an integral component to a vibrant and inclusive community.”

This year’s theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month is “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion,” highlighting the important role workers with disabilities will play as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The observance of this annual awareness campaign began in 1945, when Congress declared the first week of October to be “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The word “physically” was deleted in 1962 to be more inclusive of individuals living with all different types of disabilities. Finally, in 1988, the name became National Disability Employment Awareness Month and expanded to be a month-long campaign.

Through the end of the month, organizations, businesses, and individual employees nationwide are encouraged to observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month and promote its messages of inclusivity in their own communities.

United Way Raises Over $175,000 for Educational Programming

N A SIGNIFICANT STEP FOR SUPPORTING LOCAL STUDENTS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING, United Way of Santa Barbara County raised more than $175,000 during its 24th annual Red Feather event. Hosted on October 8th, the evening was divided into two outdoor receptions that ultimately helped the organization meet its fundraising goals, expand its donor base, and establish new connections with the community.

“The primary purpose of this event is to raise funds for United Way’s core educational partnerships that serve thousands of students, county wide, each year,” said United Way President and CEO Steve Ortiz. “Our largest program, Fun in the Sun, is Santa Barbara County’s oldest and largest public/private Truman Davies, Xorin Balbes, Belle Hahn and James Semick with partnership dedicated to long- Red Feather entertainers term educational improvement in the lives of low-income children and families. This year, we also incorporated a robust mindfulness program, providing students with access to yoga, meditation, and nature programs to encourage a connection with self and mental/emotional wellness. This curriculum has played an essential role in bringing these children into a safe environment to find their own emotional balance, connect with caring educators, and help them cope with the turbulent outside world.”

Historically, the Red Feather event is United Way’s main source of fundraising for its numerous educational programs. To this day, the 2019 Red Feather Ball is the highest grossing fundraiser in United Way’s history. Last year, the event transitioned to a virtual campaign amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first half of this year’s event was hosted at Xorin Balbes and Truman Davies’ private estate, where attendees heard presentations from Ortiz and United Way Board of Directors member and event co-chair Shari Liu Fellows. Following this, guests walked two doors over to Michael and Nati Smith’s house to enjoy music, dancing, and cocktails.

USIC TO OUR EARS: Let the lofty games begin.

In the space of three impressive concerts, last week UCSB’s Arts & Lectures series boldly busted out of the pandemic-enforced freeze frame status of the past 19 months.

Fittingly, and true to the better-living-through-diversity attitude of A&L’s vision, it burst out in multiple directions and venues.

Last Tuesday at the Granada, the eclectic Americana-ish “soul folk” group The Wood Brothers kicked it all off in smart party band fashion. A local fave, the group was one of the last acts to play here before the lockdown.

Lead singer Oliver Wood manages to be charismatic despite his ruffian guitar work, sounding all the scruffier in comparison to the stronger musicianship of his bro, bassist Chris Wood (also a third of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and nimble keyboardist/drummer Jano Rix. The show’s opener was Vermont-based Kat Wright, a singer-songwriter deserving wider recognition, whose impressive songbook and cover choices (such as the opener, Stephen Stills’ You Don’t Have to Cry) and stage magnetism, alongside her empathic trio, transcended a Marx Bros.-esque tangle of technical sound problems. Art will out, and did.

Orchestra made a dynamic return to Campbell Hall on Friday, with a special, socially-charged project in tow. Going by the suitably grand title, Fandango at the Wall: A Soundtrack for the United States, Mexico and Beyond found the innately ambitious and activism-fueled pianistbandleader-conceptualist at the helm of a blending of three ensembles—his own big band, the Conga Paria Son Jarocho Collective, and the Villalobos Brothers.

Various musical worlds were deftly woven together, illustrating O’Farrill’s curatorial insistence on the commonality and “familia” aspect of people and their cultures. The Campbell Hall stage was literally packed with musicians, including Santa Barbara-bred and now NYCbased trombonist Mariel Bildsten, who peeled off tasty morsel-sized solos. It was a happening, with a message attached.

But the pinnacle of last Danish String Quartet week’s concert feast came in the second half of what was quite possibly the Concert of the Year in Santa Barbara (albeit a fourmonth period since live music returned), when the internationally acclaimed yet still-young and affable Danish String Quartet launched into Bent Sørensen’s hypnotic, ink-still-wet piece Doppelganger. Co-commissioned by A&L, the work by Denmark’s finest composer enjoyed its U.S. premiere only days earlier, in Berkeley, and it filled the agreeably warm and rustic room of Rockwood with copious mystique, post-modern invention, and sly references to its namesake, Schubert’s haunting art song Doppelganger, from the song cycle Schwanengesang. (The DSQ ended its concert with its own entrancing arrangement of that bittersweet art song).

This is phase one of a four-year project by the Danes, enmeshing new music by composers inspired by Schubert, whose music folds around the new sounds, a strategy the DSQ used in its Beethoven-driven Prism project.

Sørensen, who memorably appeared as special guest at UCSB’s 2000 New Music Festival, easily rose to the occasion of this project, adeptly deconstructing echoes or fragmented memories of the Schubert original, and coaxing unusual sonorities from the quartet. Vaguely familiar Schubertian harmonies lodged inside stuttering repeated tones, easing down gently from a more frenetic, kinetic section to an atmospheric haze. Amidst 21st century swooping gestures, a sudden false ending appears—an emphatic resolving chord, as if airlifted from the early 19th century—before drifting off again into contemporary ambiguity.

Sørensen’s Doppelganger, a term meaningful on more than one level, addresses its own shadows on contemporary-meets-romantic terms. We were duly seduced and bewildered: mission accomplished.

Ripcord Reminds Audiences to Roll with Life’s Surprises

OW FAR WOULD YOU GO to secure something you thought you wanted? More importantly, what is holding you back from living your best life? These key questions lie at the heart of The Theatre Group at Santa Barbara City College’s production of Ripcord, directed by Katie Laris and performed at the Garvin Theatre through October 30th. Peppered with comedic exchanges, pranks, and touching personal realizations, Ripcord is a heartwarming reminder of the value of making the most of the present moment.

Taking place within the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, Ann Dusenberry, Leslie Ann Story, and Nicholis Sheley Ripcord centers on roommates Abby (Leslie Ann Story) and Marilyn (Ann Dusenberry). While the happy-go-lucky Marilyn is pleased to share the sun-filled room with the curmudgeonly Abby, Abby becomes increasingly determined to claim the room for herself. After the duo visits a haunted house, they decide to settle the matter with an absurd bet — if Abby manages to make the ever-positive Marilyn angry, she will have the room all to herself. On the other hand, if Marilyn succeeds in terrifying the seemingly fearless Abby,

Marilyn will get to claim the bed near the window.

It quickly becomes apparent that while the pair are opposites in their personalities, they are equally stubborn individuals.

As their pranks escalate, however, Abby and Marilyn begin to discover each other’s past struggles. The play culminates with a series of serious, heartfelt moments and a surprise twist that reveal not only why these women have such different worldviews, but how their unlikely friendship has improved their present moment.

The comedic timing of both Story’s and Dusenberry’s performances are impeccable, truly doing justice to playwright David Lindsay-Abaire’s comedic script. Dusenberry skillfully portrays the role of a well-meaning but sometimes annoyingly chipper roommate. Despite all the smiles, audience members begin to understand that Marilyn is not being entirely upfront, and that her perpetual cheer may be a coping mechanism to deal with past sadness.

Story aptly plays off of Dusenberry’s demeanor, presenting the perfect combination of grouchiness and wit to still be endearing. Her nuanced performance reveals a woman who is frustrated more with herself than her peers, and who vents these frustrations through humorous asides. As the plot progresses and Abby examines her identity as a mother, Story subtly shifts her demeanor to indicate internal growth, no longer delivering jokes with such a bitter sting.

These stars are joined by a talented cast of supporting characters, including Marilyn’s daughter and son-in-law (Shannon Saleh and Justin Davanzo), Abby’s son (Justin Stark), and Scotty, a Senior Living Facility employee (Nicholis Sheley).

Each of these actors adeptly meet the needs of any given scene, from emotional conversations to comic relief. In short, the cast’s overall vibrancy makes viewers forget that there are no more than six people on stage at a time.

Audience members will feel even more transported through the production’s impressive set, which consists of the completely furnished interior of Abby and Marilyn’s room. Created by Scenic and Lighting Designer Patricia L. Frank, the set is situated on a moving platform, allowing the stage to rapidly transform from a cozy apartment to a haunted house, park, and even an unexpected skydiving experience.

Overall, Ripcord is a funny, fresh look at the importance of embracing the current moment. The Theatre Group at SBCC’s production serves as a positive reminder that when confronted with life’s challenges or surprises, it’s best to rely on friendship, hope, and an open mind.

Fun with the Force Raises Funds for

SB Police Foundation and 911 At Ease

ONORING AND CELEBRATING COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE, the Santa Barbara Police Foundation and 911 At Ease International held their annual Fun with the Force benefit at the Bella Vista Ranch in Montecito, October 3rd.

The presentation of awards and recognition was part of a nearly all day event attended by hundreds of people. The Global Impact Award recipients were Michael Armand Hammer and Misty Hammer; the Community Keystone Award was presented to Tom Parker of the Hutton Parker Foundation; National Inspiration Award was given to Cassie Wright; and the David Auduri Memorial Award was presented to Tony Pighetti.

Speaking about the At Ease program, Interim Police Chief Barney Melekian said, “At Ease is an officer safety program as certainly as any formal training we make available for our officers. Every critical incident responded to is like adding a rock to your backpack. Individually they don’t seem like much, but collectively the strain can become too much to bear. At Ease helps our officers take those rocks out of their packs and set them aside. The worst thing that has happened to me as a police chief was the suicide of one of my officers. Perhaps if we had had At Ease back then, that officer would still be with us. I am very grateful that At Ease Co-Founders Sgt. Mike McGrew and Michael Hammer had the compassion and foresight to help create this program.”

At Ease co-founder Michael Hammer related about the program, “The AT EASE program was founded seven years ago to support our first responders as they face difficulties in their jobs day in and day out. I am honored to have founded this program along with Sgt. Mike McGrew. This program grew throughout the Central Coast and is now reaching far across this nation and into other parts of the world.”

Special thanks went to Ursula and Patrick Nesbitt for hosting the event for the eighth year at their Bella Vista Ranch; Boogie Knights for their special live performance; and to Billy Baldwin and John Palminteri for their continuing commitment to support the event. The event raised $2 million dollars for the non-profits.

Concert review: Charles Lloyd, Santa Barbara Bowl, October 16, 2021

The Homecoming Habit HENEVER THE GLOBALLY-ACCOLADED SAXIST CHARLES LLOYD, a longtime Montecitan, lands on the Lobero Theater stage, it takes on the air of a homecoming event, regardless of the fact that he has landed here many times since his Lobero debut in 1981. As his friend, presenter, and one-time manager Steve Cloud announced before the latest Lloyd-Lobero event last Saturday, the artist—who spent many years in reclusion in Big Sur in the 1970s–has “played here 14 or 15 times.” Even the official count is getting blurry now.

Suffice to say, the room itself becomes part of the story when the saxist goes to town – and into the cosmos – on this stage.

There have been historic high points along the saga, including live recordings made here, with the trio Sangam and just three years ago, for Lloyd’s 80th birthday bash, resulting in the custom Blue Note Records package 8: Kindred Spirits (Live at the Lobero).

Somehow, though, Saturday’s concert conjured up a special and poignant resonance, coming as it did on the heels of a soulchilling, forced hiatus from live music, by order of the COVID marshals. The homey vibe was enhanced by the familiar sight of a backdrop featuring a colorful, Henri Rousseau-ish painting by Lloyd’s wife/manager/photographer Dorothy Darr.

Lloyd, whose latest album is with his band called the Marvels (with guitarist Bill Frisell, pedal steel player Greg Leisz, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland), was arriving in a refreshed line-up of his classic acoustic quartet format, now with the sophisticated dynamo pianist Gerald Clayton in place of longstanding Lloyd ally Jason Moran, the ever-commanding Rogers, and drummer Justin Brown taking the place of Harland, who has worked in Lloyd’s quartet for 20 years.

Lloyd himself acknowledged the significant aura of his hometown venue when, after opening contemplatively with his

tune Dirge, he told the audience that “it’s difficult to talk when I’m playing, but this is my living room, and I had to share.”

Mostly, he paid due respects to recently-deceased figures of late of particular influence for him, including impresario George Wein.

In a sense, Clayton made the strongest impression here, in the sense of presenting the continuing upward evolution and sense of adventure from a musician who had just made a bold multi-hatted impression at the Monterey Jazz Festival a few weeks back. On a blues, Clayton reworked and kneaded the comfortable harmonic nature of the form, and handily met the challenges of songs on varying ends of the dynamic and tempo spectrum.

The new drum chair-holder was in a hot seat, given the venerable tenure of Harland. I had seen Lloyd with Brown at the Ystad Jazz Festival in Sweden several years ago, and the air between them seemed tense, volatile. Here, Brown was in a fairly careful and understated, ensemble-attuned mode, versus the crackling intensity he has brought to his work in Ambrose Akinmusire’s band. We got a taste of his artful fury in a short but potent solo turn.

But intensity is folded in Lloyd’s musical framework in measured doses, in bursts tucked between introspective musings and loose-limbed excursions within his song structures. Primarily playing his tenor sax with the exception of occasional flute (and not picking up his Hungarian tarogato, at the ready onstage), Lloyd himself played with an assured but unhurried grace. His lithe lines, flurries, and muted tone merged beautifully in the lived-in sound of a musician who has truly found his voice by now, and is identifiable on aural impact.

As a fitting encore for Lloyd’s latest homecoming, and one tinged by a sense of the elegiac, Clayton set up the band’s atmospheric take on the sad-sweet Mexican folk tune La Llorona.

Recent Spill Throws Spotlight on Local Diving Industry

IVING ON THE SHORELINE OF THE MIGHTY PACIFIC in Santa Barbara, our community is well aware of the importance of balancing the demands on land with the preservation of our oceans. The seas that occupy 71 percent of the surface of the planet sustain us. The news of yet another oil spill of 25,000 gallons caused by a ruptured pipeline has been a concern to both industrialists and environmentalists, not to mention all life forms. The anchor dragging incident of a cargo ship that had been stranded in heavy seas in San Pedro Bay while waiting to unload its cargo was determined to be the cause. The chaos that the global pandemic has thrust upon us and the faltering supply chain of goods and services we’ve taken for granted are searing reminders of how very interconnected we are to one another, the environment, and our livelihoods.

Curious as to how that kind of a pipeline breach below the ocean’s surface was managed, I contacted Don Barthelmess, Santa Barbara City College’s Marine Diving Technology Professor Emeritus and a long time diver who created the formal American National Standard commercial diver certification program that exists today. Barthelmess is also the immediate Past President Commercial diving work is varied and intense of the Santa Barbara Maritime removed entire Japanese communities to inland relocation camps.

Reporting growth in September were 16 of the 17 manufacturing industries.

The top seven — in the following order — were: Furniture & Related Products; Petroleum & Coal Products; Machinery; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Computer & Electronic Products; and Chemical Products.

The orders index was unchanged at the prior month’s very high level of 66.7 and the supplier delivery index rebounded by four points to 73.4. The overall result was a 1.2-point increase to 61.1. Any number over 50 percent indicates that a majority of those surveyed saw increases, and reaching 60 for any length of time is highly unusual, according to the ISM survey announcement.

Even better news is that consumer spending is holding up, which powers some two-thirds of economic activity. This may be because consumers are paying less attention to the pandemic as the infection rate falls and the third Pfizer booster shot becomes available.

This is while Consumer spending grew at a robust 12.0 percent rate in the AprilJune quarter. The Commerce Department also said construction spending increased 8.9 percent on a year-on-year basis in August. Separately, the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index rose to a final reading of 72.8 in September from 70.3 in August.”

ROWTH IN THE U.S. MANUFACTURING SECTOR IS EXPLODING, according to the Institute for Supply Managers Report on Business. Output is up 17 percent in Q2 2021 YoY (see FRED graph). It is a great sign of overall economic growth for the rest of this year, in spite of supply shortages and higher prices for raw materials.

“There have been 15 ISM composite index readings of 60 or more in the past 30 years. Seven of them have come in the past ten months,” said Reuters. This is in spite of the supply-chain delays and soaring product prices. The ISM Prices Index registered 81.2 percent. In September, 17 of 18 industries reported paying increased prices for raw materials.

Our team at the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network relies on the generosity of the community to rescue, rehabilitate, and release wildlife 365 days a year. The organization is almost entirely funded by donations from individuals and foundations. In addition to its staff, 300 volunteers provide thousands of hours of service every year.”

HE WILDLIFE CARE NETWORK THREW A LATE-AFTERNOON, EARLY EVENING FUN AND SUN FILLED PARTY for supporters and guests at Chase Palm Park building on Friday, October 15th as a fundraising outreach. Guest were dressed in Aloha attire and greeted by enthusiastic and costumed Hula dancers and an army of festive volunteers. Treated to exotic tropical flower arrangements and a sumptuous sampling of dining options including Spanish paella and middle-eastern treats, guests enjoyed the ambiance of the gardens just outside the Carousel House.

The center of activities was on the western end of Chase Palm Park, a city venue. The gorgeous open sunken garden was surrounded by sunlit palms, the ocean, amidst its urban and seabird-filled surroundings. The garden easily accommodated the beautifully set tables which were illuminated with the magic of an early fall sunset.

Food was offered by SB Paella Catering, Mony's, Oysters XO, Zaytoon, with dessert by Crushcakes.

Drinks at the stylish bar included beer and wine, which was served by Petite Fleet; Goleta Red Distilling provided a selection of small-batch spirits. Signature cocktails made for the event included the Fiesta Dr. Avery Berkowitz (SBWCN Del Mar-garita and the Pineapple Whiskey Splash.

Spirit of a Community Exhibition on View In Santa Barbara

FFERING A SNAPSHOT INTO LIFE IN GUADALUPE IN THE LATE 1980S, photographer Rod Rolle’s Spirit of a Community documentary project is now on display at Santa Barbara County Administration Building Garden Atrium. An intimate glimpse into this beautiful city’s past, the project includes The Big Picture, which invited all Guadalupe residents to pose for a town self-portrait.

“I am thrilled to see that Rod is being acknowledged and an opportunity Rod Rolle to share his interpretation of the history and events that have evolved in this region of our county,” stated Karen Evangelista, Executive Director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts & Education Center.

Rolle has been a Santa Barbara resident since 1982, and attended the Brooks Institute of Photography. He created the Spirit of a Community project while working as a documentary photographer for artist Judy Baca’s Guadalupe Mural Project, with both artists being commissioned by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. Between 1988 and 1989, Rolle captured Guadalupe’s people and way of life through his camera lens for generations to come. Ultimately, The Big Picture was displayed at the Smithsonian Museum: Experimental Gallery.

T’S NO SECRET that Santa Barbara County boasts a community brimming with artists. Yet despite this abundance of local talent, many individuals have not had the opportunity to share their stories and creative processes with others.

This is changing with the recent release of Small Town Big Art, a book that shines the spotlight on 100 Carpinteria artists.

The book also supports the creative community by donating its proceeds to the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center. To date, $11,500 has already been raised.

“Carpinteria is a big art community... To have this much talent in such a small community per capita is amazing, and I think people will be really shocked by that,” shared the Arts Center’s Executive Director Linda Rosso, going on to praise the project’s support of the Center. “It’s like a gift from Heaven, you don’t encounter that kind of dedication and commitment on a regular basis.”

The idea for the project started over a year ago with former Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center Board Chair David Powdrell, who woke up in the middle of the night with a vision for a book that would highlight the local arts community as a whole. He quickly teamed up with Janey Cohen, Lea Boyd, Christie Boyd, and Marco Rigonati to realize his goal, working for over a year before the final product was released this fall.

“It’s a win-win-win project,” said Powdrell. “100 percent of the proceeds from the book go to the Arts Center... It’s a big shot in the arm for the community of Carpinteria to say we are a vibrant and alive arts community. And most importantly, it’s a thank you to these artists and a recognition to these artists of who they are, what they do, why they do what they do.”

Rather than focusing only on artists who utilize a particular style or form, Small Town Big Art celebrates the diversity of the creative world by including painters, photographers, poets, dancers, and more. Each artist’s highlight consists of the individual’s answers to the same three questions, offering readers personal insight into how all of the artists discovered their craft, what inspires them, fun facts, and what they appreciate about Carpinteria.

“The best thing would be for people to know how much balance there is in this town,” said photographer and graphic designer Marco Rigonati. “The hope is that the community can see the amazing pool of artists that we have, and how much art is important to Carpinteria.”

The release of the book was celebrated with a reception at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center on October 8th, which included the auction of a signed copy and an oil painting that artist Sharon Schock created during the event. That same day, the Center opened its curated Small Town Big Art exhibit, which features works created by the book’s artists. The exhibition will continue through November 14th.

Climate + Art = Change Learn about critical environmental topics while enjoying local artists’ works this weekend as the Southern California Artist Painting for the Environment (SCAPE) and the Climate Reality Project present Climate + Art = Change. Hosted at the Community Arts Workshop at 631 Garden St., this free, two-day event will take place from 1-8pm Saturday, October 23rd and from 10am-5pm on Sunday, October 24th. There, attendees will explore a juried art exhibit and sale, presentations from regional experts, eco-friendly children’s activities, and informative videos and displays. Proceeds from art sales will also support the Community Environmental Council and Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club.
