S THE ARTS & CULTURE SEASON HEATS UP, galleries and museums are stepping up to add their own flair and excitement to the mix.

As one of Santa Barbara’s finest galleries, Sullivan Goss: An American Gallery is leading the way with several new exhibitions by local favorites, including Nathan Huff: Almost Here, and the second solo exhibition by Inga Guzyte: Young Sparrows.

In her exhibition, Guzyte will present a second body of sculptural portraits in her current medium of choice, scrollsaw cut skateboards.

Young Sparrows focuses on young women, and follows on the heels of the National Gallery’s announcement that her work was selected for

exhibition as part of the 2022 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Out of over 2,700 entries, Guzyte’s sculptural portrait joins 41 other Finalists next year in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Among the portraits at Sullivan Goss are five “daughters” or “young sparrows” most readers will recognize: Amanda Gorman, Momiji Nishiya, Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, and Millie Bobby Brown. The Inga Guzyte sixth portrait is of an anonymous young woman that she calls Bacha Posh - Daughter, You Will be my Son, highlighting a custom in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where families in that

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Inga Guzyte was born in Lithuania Young Sparrow and emigrated to Gelsenkirchen, Green - Orange Germany with her mother and - R, 2021 by Inga brother when she was still young.

Guzyte In Germany, the skateboarding community welcomed her, which was vital in helping her to build a life in a new country. When she turned 21, she immigrated to the United States, making her way to Santa Barbara to study English and art at Santa Barbara Community College – one of the best regarded City Colleges in the country and a place associated with such skateboarding companies as Shorty’s and Powell Peralta. After finishing school, Inga got to work – exhibiting broadly in her adopted home city of Santa Barbara. Since then, she has shown in San Francisco, Oakland, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Zürich, Vienna, and Los Angeles. Last year, Inga won first place in the At the Edges exhibition at the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, as juried by Marcos Ramirez. She also got the Mayor’s Choice award at the L.A. Art Association’s exhibition Floating Worlds at the Brea Gallery last year. Right now, her work is showing at Barney’s in New York as part of a special presentation of the Women Who Dared Collection through Northwell Health Group.

part of the world without sons can designate one of their prepubescent daughters as a son in order to help their families with work that girls are not typically permitted to do.

Guzyte agreed to answer a few questions for VOICE readers prior to the 1st Thursday opening.

VOICE: What inspires you to do portraits of women?

Inga Guzyte: I chose to create female portraits because I found something in their personal story to admire. The more I think about their stories, the more resilience I gain myself. Their courage and strength transferred to me. I feel stronger and have more hope for the future. I want to share their stories, not because they are unique, but because they are not. Every woman out there can be an advocate for positive change in this world. Many can’t wait for change to happen.

Being raised by a single mother, it feels like second nature to me to admire women as I admire my mother and to listen to their stories and ideas. In a way, the portraits I create are telling my own personal story because they speak on the things that I care about and want to address.

Therefore, celebrating women by creating portraits of them feels very empowering to me. And why should we not celebrate, lift each other up, feed off each other’s energy, and strive for greater things together?!

VOICE: How did you feel when you found out you are a finalist in the national portrait competition?

Guzyte: I was definitely surprised but once the news sunk in I was very excited.

VOICE: How did you learn about Bacha Posh and their role?

Guzyte: Thanks to a friend’s book recommendation I learned about Bacha Posh by reading about Ukmina Manoori’s life story in the book called I am a Bacha Posh.

Bacha Posh are young girls dressed up as boys and assuming the roles of boys in their family. It is an unspoken tradition (people know it exists but they don’t speak about it) and a practice in Afghanistan and Pakistan in which some families without sons will pick a daughter to live and behave as a boy until the age of 12.

This enables the girls to behave more freely: playing outside with the boys, in some cases even attending school, escorting her sisters in public, running errands for their mothers and working.

In some cases young Bacha Posh decide to stay Bacha Posh forever.

I was very taken by Ukmina’s story also because I encountered parallels from her story to my personal life. Every world I chose for myself was male dominated, from skateboarding to woodworking and sculpture, but I have no regrets.

VOICE: What do you hope your portraits will inspire in viewers and particularly in other “young sparrows?”

Guzyte: For this particular body of work I chose to combine my portraits with nature and I was very intrigued by the symbolism and different meanings of flowers and trees. Therefore, for example: I chose yellow Daffodils for the Amanda Gorman portrait because it symbolizes rebirth, hope, and positivity, as the feeling she gives me when she recites her poems.

I chose Anemones that symbolize protection to combine with the portrait of Millie Bobby Brown who advocates for children as a UNICEF Goodwill - Ambassador.

I was inspired to combine Greta Thunberg portrait, a young environmental activist, with oak leaves, a tree that Ancient Celts saw as a symbol of persistence and greater force that can’t be stopped. I admire her Young persistence Sparrow and her big Green - Gold heart she - L, 2021 by has for this Inga Guzyte planet. And I chose sparrows to represent the fact that you don’t have to be large to be heard. In addition to that, I like to think of these young girls full of passion and courage as birds that are free.

VOICE: This age is ripe to receive your work. What are you most proud of so far?

Guzyte: I am proud to have never given up following my artistic voice no matter how hard at times it seemed to be.

VOICE: Any suggestions for folks trying to find their own voice and passion?

Guzyte: Being curious, asking questions, listening, reading, traveling, stepping outside the box and your own comfort zone, will at least push you in the right direction of finding those things.

It is very tempting to choose your passion based on the promise of its success. To that I can just say: no one can tell you how successful you are as long as you are happy doing the things that you do.

Erin McKibben Named Sing! Director ERIN MCKIBBEN will serve as the Director of the Music Academy of the West’s Sing! program. In this role, she will re-launch Sing! as a free after-school choral program in six Santa Barbara elementary schools in January 2022. The owner and Director of the Santa Barbara School of Music, McKibben also serves as a Music Director for the Santa Barbara Revels and Santa Barbara Youth Opera. Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation Hosts Annual Gold Ribbon Luncheon

I

N AN INSPIRING AND HEARTWARMING COMMUNITY GATHERING, individuals across Santa Barbara County supported the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation at its 9th annual Gold Ribbon Luncheon. Hosted on Wednesday, October 13th at the Hilton Beachfront Resort’s outdoor plaza, the event featured a speech from sportscaster Curt Menefee, exciting announcements, and the honoring of two local families.

TBCF currently provides emotional, financial, and educational support to children with cancer and their families living throughout the tri-counties.

Menefee began the luncheon by highlighting the power of community support and urging guests to support the organization. TBCF Executive Director Dr. Corey Pahanish then announced that the nonprofit will soon begin a capital campaign to find a permanent home and expand its abilities to offer additional services to local families. Ultimately, TBCF plans to establish a full-scale pediatric cancer support center that will incorporate multiple nonprofits to Giana Miller holds the End-of-Chemo bell for her provide specialized care and services to son, Henry families.

Following this, there was an auction for a two-tiered cake baked by 13-year-old Rylie Katz, daughter of TBCF Founder Nikki Katz and a TBCF’s Youth Philanthropy program member. This raised $100,000 to support current and future TBCF programs.

Andrew and Giana Miller shared family testimony about their experiences with their six-year-old son, Henry, who has battled cancer for the last three years. Fortunately, Henry had just rung the End-of-Chemo bell at Cottage Hospital only days before the luncheon, leading attendees to ring their own bells to celebrate Henry.

Brittany Avila Wazny, TBCF Sr. Development Director, then announced the new inclusion of siblings to the organization’s Educational Advocacy program. She recalled her experiences being a sibling to a pediatric cancer survivor. “I can recall a number of nights when my younger sister was asking for my help with homework while my parents were at my brother’s bedside in the hospital,” said Wazny. “I can’t tell you how meaningful it is for me to be able to provide these additional educational services to the siblings also affected by pediatric cancer in a different way. It’s so easy to forget about the other kids in the family when one is so very ill.”

Finally, TBCF honored two families for their dedication to the nonprofit’s mission, presenting the Taylor family with the “Pay It Forward” award for their support after their son’s cancer battle. The Greene family was awarded the “Heart of Gold” for their commitment to TBCF over the past decade.

State Street Advisory Committee Prepares to Release RFP to Hire Consultant

WIDELY APPRECIATED YET HEAVILY DEBATED ASPECT OF THE DOWNTOWN AREA, the State Street Promenade continues to be at the forefront of local leaders’ and residents’ conversations. On October 18th, the City of Santa Barbara’s State Street Advisory Committee took another small step toward addressing the Promenade’s future by outlining elements to be included in a request for proposal to hire a consultant. Ultimately, it is hoped that by June 2022, a consultant will join the committee’s efforts to craft a Downtown State Street Area Master Plan.

“Some of the things that a consultant could help us with are - just from the basics - the conceptual design layout for what we’re talking about to help us form reactions to different design ideas, [and] working on some of the technical studies that we might need to have in order to complete the master planning effort,” said City State Street Master Planner Tess Harris.

The SSAC began by reviewing other cities’ plans for pedestrian-focused areas to inspire their own approach to establishing a Master Plan. Many of these cities spanned the United States, including Burlington, Vermont and Santa Monica, California, however certain international cities such as Copenhagen and Florence were praised for providing housing and transportation.

Additional qualities the committee appreciated from these and other cities’ plans included efforts to engage visitors with unique features, a commitment to public art, being aware of sustainability and environmental concerns, and maximizing pedestrian’s experiences.

City Councilmember Meagan Harmon also commented on her experiences living in Cairo, Beirut, and Jerusalem, pointing to how they successfully integrate functional elements for residents alongside attractions for tourists.

“Certainly master planning is obviously why we’re here... but to allow for some element of whimsy into this I think is key to creating something that doesn’t feel quite so

SB Public Library Launches Buy-a-Brick Campaign to Support New Library Plaza

With only 250 bricks available for purchase, each brick will be included among the plaza’s 10,000 square feet in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, making it a great way to honor a loved one while supporting a good cause.

“We are excited to launch the Buy-a-Brick campaign, and see this as a truly unique way for our community to participate in supporting the library,” said SBPLF Executive Director Lauren Trujillo. “This newly imagined Library Plaza will not only open doors to expanded experiences in literacy, learning and adventure but will rebuild our downtown and anchor our historic Cultural Arts District with an attractive, safe and accessible outdoor space.”

Petition Against Airplane Noise Levels Circulates Throughout SB Community

VER 500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE SIGNED A PETITION posted on www.Change.org by the Coalition of Neighbors Against Airplane Noise calling for less airplane noise along the Santa Barbara coastline. Specifically, this petition claims that both commercial and private airplanes are not observing the noise abatement route recommended by the Santa Barbara Airport, instead causing increased noise and pollution over area houses.

“We put up the petition to refute SBA’s contention that only a handful of residents are upset by the airplane noise over their homes,” said CONAAN member Barbara Greenleaf in a statement. “SBA further contends that those people live principally near More Mesa and in Hope Ranch. In fact, people throughout the community are angry.

Following this, the SSAC discussed areas of consideration that will constitute the Master Plan’s scope as well as be outlined in the RFP to hire a consultant. Reviewed topics included streetscape design and amenities, transportation, circulation and parking, operation and maintenance, stormwater/drainage, public art, historic resources, economic development, and funding strategies. Additionally, the Master Plan will explore opportunities to engage people experiencing homelessness, housing and redevelopment, sustainability infrastructure, and how the Promenade can promote equity and accessibility for all visitors and local residents.

In reviewing these elements, the committee stressed the crucial role public feedback will play in shaping the downtown’s future. Multiple members called for extensive and inclusive outreach to ensure all people who utilize the downtown area are heard, regardless if they live within City limits. Others referenced the long-lasting impact of this project.

“I recognize that this is not about me, this is about what’s the [best] Santa Barbara for my children and what do they need in 15 to 20 years, and not the way that I want to see Santa Barbara now,” said alternate committee member Michael Becker.

Going forward, the SSAC intends to review City staff ’s draft of an RFP by December.

In addition to assisting with conceptual design layouts and technical studies, the hired consultant will also help with public outreach efforts, facilitating meetings, and assessing existing conditions and infrastructure.

The RFP is expected to open in January 2022, with submissions accepted through February. Then, City staff in coordination with the SSAC Chair and Vice Chair will select and interview finalists. When a consultant is chosen, the SSAC and City staff will finalize the project’s scope of work before presenting the consultant’s contract to the City Council for approval.

Paradise on State Street - Heaven for Vinyl Lovers T’S OFTEN SAID THAT SANTA BARBARA IS A BEACHSIDE PARADISE — BUT WHAT’S PARADISE WITHOUT MUSIC? Celebrating its Grand Opening earlier this month, Paradise on State Street brings an extensive collection of records and vintage items to the downtown area. Boasting timeless albums from iconic bands such as The Beach Boys and The Beatles, to popular contemporary artists like Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean, Paradise on State Street offers listeners of all ages the opportunity to sell, shop, and connect over the records they love.

“People walk through the Kim Kjar store, and they’ll do a loop; you can just see it in their eyes and the smiles on their face — ‘Oh man, I remember, 1985, the Beastie Boys and my first party in Isla Vista’ — and then they’ll start telling me their stories,” said manager Kim Kjar. “It’s just a cool vibe; it just opens up people to connecting.”

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Kjar previously worked with his family’s business Hennings Cake Boutique as well as a director for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara.

When his long-time friend Mike Alexander, owner of the Paradise Trading Post in Orcutt, decided to open a Santa Barbara location, Kjar

jumped at the chance to combine his appreciation for music with his nature as a “people person.”

“I’ve just met hundreds of people, thousands of people over the years in the businesses that I was involved in,” explained Kjar. “And Mike knew coming in, that I had a real good idea of what the locals want down here and the vibe of the businesses down on State Street.”

Located at 432 State St., Paradise on State Street first opened its doors in January 2021 amidst the pandemic. However, the business just hosted its official Grand Opening on October 16th to celebrate its securing a longterm lease and to let the community know that the store is here to stay.

Upon entering Paradise on State Street, visitors are greeted by hundreds of new and used records organized by genre, bands, and artists, and recent arrivals. Altogether, the collection spans almost the entire last century of music, presenting customers the chance to simultaneously shop for Elvis Presley, Green Day, Pink Floyd, and more.

Visitors also have the option to sell or trade in their own used records in exchange for store credit.

Paradise on State Street also offers an eclectic collection of vintage items such as clothing, toys, baseball cards, and more. There are even various crystals and art depicting different music artists available for purchase, including some works by local artists.

Eventually Kjar hopes to sell tickets to local concerts at the store. He also plans for people to enjoy listening to a record while enjoying a cocktail on the back patio the store shares with the night club, Indochine.

Going forward, Kjar is happy to offer community members and tourists alike a place to share over music.

“The coolest thing is when a mom and dad bring their kids in, and their kids are now connected,” remarked Kjar. “That’s obviously pretty cool for me as a business owner, not just making sales, but making these connections with the people.”

The W’s Have It

USIC TO OUR EARS: As a rule, the Santa Barbara Bowl concert season, the latest shortened version of which is just wrapping up, is a genre-diverse menu without particular curatorial schemes overlaid on the schedule. Last week, however, it seemed as if some cultural hand was at work when, over the course of two nights, we were treated to a trio of W-related American artists—Lucinda Williams, Wilco, and the ever-hip guru Willie Nelson, 88 and counting—offering variations on country, blues, rock, and folk. The sum effect was a powerful micro American post-roots festival, without really trying.

Wilco is a phenom of its own devising, with multi-headed wonder Jeff Tweedy at the center. They kicked off with A Shot in the Arm, from last year’s Summerteeth, but then were off and running through its large, rich discography and range of attitudes. The band that Tweedy built may have started in alt country soil, but his band has evolved into something unique on the musical landscape. Lean, mean, and kindly guitarist Nels Cline, as usual, lent his alternately wild and melodic expressive powers, and the band embarked on abstract jam sections and progressive rock-ish moments reminiscent of Radiohead. Even Tweedy’s own guitar soloing took a raggedly adventurous road, as if nicely “corrupted” by Cline’s influence.

Williams’ set was, in a sense, the most poignant of the three Bowl acts, partly for an unexpected reason. After being helped on stage and using a chair to lean on, Williams explained she’d had a stroke in November, then shrugged, “but here I am. Your presence here is a gift. It keeps me going.”

Yes, there she was, still a dominant and apparently indomitable force in American music, dipping into her potent songbook at her Lucinda-branded junction of country, folk, blues, Southern rock ‘n’ roll, and a keen poetic ken. We’ve heard Williams many times in Santa Barbara, but often opening up for male artists of greater fame, apart from a memorable evening at the Lobero in 2017 (she had an earlier almost-ran at the Lobero, in the great “Sings like Hell” series, but a late-breaking call to appear on Saturday Night Live got in the way).

cult hero singer-songwriter Blaze Foley. She also personalized songs made better-known through cover versions by iconic males—Tom Petty, with Changed the Locks, and her touching ballad Over Time, done by Willie Nelson. “Bless his heart,” she said, “I just love that man.” We—a vast collective “we”—know the feeling.

There was a cathartic moment, deep into Nelson’s short-ish but full-bodied set, when he launched into On the Road Again just as a whale-sized American flag dramatically unfurled as a backdrop. The vision served as a reminder of Nelson’s uncanny ability to appeal to folks of all persuasions, from all sides of the political, demographic, and agebased aisles and factions. It also illustrated – in epic, sing-along terms – the generous unleashing of relief catching important artists hitting the road again, alighting stages and warming public ears again in real-time/real-terms.

Last week’s classical music epiphany arrived via master mandolinist Avi Avital, with the Quebecois group Les Violons du Roy, playing a thrilling, exacting evening of Baroque music, from Bach and Vivaldi.

From an organizational standpoint, the concert represented the almighty CAMA presenting organization’s return to action, with its first concert in almost two years, presaging a semi-season starting in January.

Music is clearly on the road again, and not a moment too soon.

The Mystic Cruzar is Coast Guard certified for 50 passengers plus ten crew, which will make her ideal for the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s popular Tall Ship Program. In this living history program, 4th-grade students are immersed in California history while developing critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Students sign aboard as green-hands for a voyage from Boston to Alta California in the 1830s, recreating Richard Henry Dana, Jr.’s experience in his book Two Years Before The Mast. The young people participate in rowing long boats, working the sails, rigging, collecting hides, and cooking for the crew.

“We are so grateful to Roger and Sarah Chrisman to have the opportunity to be included in the Mystic Cruzar’s mission,” said Greg Gorga Executive Director of the Maritime Museum.“Can’t wait ‘till she’s here!”

HIS WEEK, DEAR READER, I HAVE THE MOST EXCITING NEWS TO TELL YOU! Soon you and I will be viewing a very special nautical guest planning her arrival on the West Coast for visits to our beautiful Santa Barbara harbor. Formerly known as the Mystic Whaler, the schooner is sailing from her home waters in Mystic, Connecticut. She’s on her way along the Eastern Seaboard to Port Everglades, Florida to be placed aboard an ocean freighter through the Panama Canal. She’ll then be sailed up the Pacific Coast (a long, long journey) to Southern California and her new home. Her arrival date is yet to be determined but be prepared and stay watchful... this ship is one of a kind!

This 110 foot, 97 ton vessel is a reproduction of a late 19th-century coastal cargo schooner with 3,000 square feet of sail, a steel hull, and a diesel engine. In her former life, she has been known to carry 52 passengers on day sails and 31 on overnight trips.

On board are Italian oak floors and fir wainscoting with mahogany accents, along with six bathrooms with hot showers. The Mystic Whaler was built in 1967 as a tribute to the coastal trading schooners that sailed the Atlantic coastline a century ago. She was utilized for the New England windjammer trade and served 23 years before being retired in 1990.

In 1994, John Eginton and his wife Pat purchased and refurbished the vessel and returned to her home port of Mystic with a commitment to memorable windjammer and educational sailing experiences. After completing the sale, the Egintons were quoted by New London, Connecticut’s online news The Day: “This is a bittersweet time for us.

Mystic Whaler has been our livelihood and our life for three decades... it is a great relief to know that the schooner has a secure future and a noble mission ahead.”

And a noble mission the schooner has indeed!

Thanks to the generosity of Sarah and Roger Chrisman, whose newly formed non-profit Central Coast Ocean Adventures now owns and operates the schooner, rechristened the Mystic Cruzar. The plan for her on the West Coast includes frequent visits to Santa Barbara’s harbor from her permanent berth Sarah and Roger Chrisman in the Channel Islands Harbor. Her mission will be experiential, hands-on teaching of teamwork, leadership, nautical skills, oceanography, and environmental responsibility. Sarah Chrisman, who is especially interested in education and marine oriented youth programs, explained, “The Mystic Cruzar will be available to schools, corporate and other groups and, of course, especially the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum for its educational programs. Student sailors will be local, accompanied by their teachers and parents. Aboard the vessel all will experience voyages of nautical, scientific, and personal discovery.” A mission not dissimilar to the Mystic Cruzar’s former life on the East Coast.

Roger Chrisman, a long serving member of the Maritime Museum’s Board of Directors and a former Commodore of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club announced, “We were extremely fortunate to welcome Santa Barbara Captain Christine Healy to our program.

Mystic Cruzar is now sailing down the Eastern seaboard with Captain Healy at the helm assisted by co-Captain Atria Peter of our own yacht Polariis and a crew of ten aboard.”

He added, “Captain Christine brings extensive experience as captain of vessels of all descriptions including large sailing ships and is also a skilled teacher and an excellent role

Covering News Takes Some Muscle NEWS MUSCLES - When it comes to moving mountain rocks out of the roadway to get a news vehicle through, I could get some but not that BIG ONE. This was on upper Refugio Road in the Alisal fire zone, and we decided we had seen enough. No big slides. No creek flooding.

Lots of Water RUSHING WATER in the Refugio - Alisal Fire area flows downstream without overwhelming the rural roads. The Monday storm did not hit as hard as once expected.

There were MULTIPLE HOUSING LOSSES from the ALISAL FIRE up the canyon roads. I was given a first hand look. Many residents were renters and have GoFundMe pages to get a helping hand up. Please look them over and help if you can.

EPTEMBER RETAIL SALES AND FOOD SERVICES presage a holiday season worth celebrating, despite supply shortages, worker shortages, and the pandemic. Seasonally adjusted retail sales are up 12 percent over last September, which means that the demand for goods and some services is at a historic high.

So the shortages are due to consumers and businesses buying more than ever, more than last year and all the years before, in spite of the supply shortages.

There’s little evidence of production shortages, per se, as much as a slowdown in getting to their destinations in ports such as Los Angeles and Long Beach, where more than half of all imports to the U.S. arrive.

New York Times Paul Krugman put up a FRED graph that illustrates the huge surge in the demand for durable goods—goods like appliances and vehicles that lasts more than three years. It tells us that said demand can continue above the

average dotted trend line into the year end holidays.

The demand for services such as leisure activities and travel is lagging because the pandemic has kept many consumers at home. But that will pick up as well once the pandemic is subdued.

And what if the Infrastructure and Build Back Better bills pass? They would add additional $ trillions to programs that boost businesses and improve consumers’ lives. Then the boost in demand for goods and services could be prolonged for… years.

Should we worry about inflation because too much money is in circulation, driving up prices? Not if it’s put to productive uses, as I’ve been saying. Both physical and so-called social infrastructure spending go into increasing productivity, hence a greater supply of goods and services, not excessive speculation in the financial markets as have past tax cuts from which the wealthiest most benefited.

So we really need to grow what one political scientist has termed our social capital as much as physical infrastructure, if we want a sustainable recovery. It can be done by improving people’s lives.

And better physical infrastructure will help to cure the supply bottlenecks.

“In the longer run, investments in infrastructure could help much more: U.S. ports, rail lines and so on are shabby compared with their counterparts in other countries and could be much improved.” says Krugman.

The Night of a Lifetime: A spectacular gift to the community ISMET, A GLORIOUS FATE FOR SANTA BARBARA; Sara Miller McCune’s philanthropic zeal reached luxurious heights last weekend at The Granada Theatre, when she saw her vision through as producer (aka: picked up the tab) for a revival of her favorite Broadway show.

As the opening event of the Santa Barbara Symphony’s 20212022 season, in collaboration with State Street Ballet, and the Granada Theatre, this one-off revival of the show (a total of four performances over three days) was a jaw-dropper.

Founder of Sage Publishing, a global academic source for research books and journals championing social justice, McCune, who is celebrating her 80th birthday in 2021, has also spent her career passionately supporting the arts. She spared no expense for this revival of Kismet, as a full cast and chorus, hand-picked

by Director Lonny Price (Sunset Blvd, Sweeney Todd, Company, Candide - to name a small handful of his Broadway triumphs) prepared a fresh version of the show, honing it over several weeks in New York City, then flew the cast to Santa Barbara for final rehearsals with the Symphony and State Street Ballet before last weekend’s performances at the Granada Theatre. But wait, there’s more. Price also brought with him a stellar, soup to nuts, Broadway production team for the Santa Barbara revival.

Suffice to say, the combined talent on stage last weekend in Santa Barbara, likely dimmed the talent amperage slightly, back home on 42nd Street.

With fresh dance choreography by State Street Ballet’s CoArtistic Director and Resident Choreographer William Soleau, performed by members of the company, and conductor Nir Kabaretti and the Santa Barbara Symphony stationed discreetly behind a scrim on a raised dais above and behind the single, Globe Theatre-like performance space (simplicity itself), Price took full advantage of the Granada Theatre’s state-of-the-art video, sound, and lighting technology to create an experience that was at very least, magical. Audience appreciation? I attended last Friday’s dress rehearsal, together with about 1,000 invited guests.

The exhilarating chorus in the first few minutes of the show made clear we were enjoying a one-of-a-kind, first-class, Broadwaystandard musical theater experience. All three additional performances last weekend were nearly sold-out. Kismet!

Kismet opened on Broadway in 1953 and won the Tony Award for best musical in 1954. Re-visited by New York City Opera (1985) and English National Opera (2007), what audiences saw last weekend was the latest, freshest revival, created by director Price exclusively for Sara Miller McCune. Slightly kitschy, with a late forties, early fifties musical vibe, replete with hot percussion licks circa those fun Bob Hope “Road” pictures, Kismet also makes gaudy use of a colorful Arabian Nights, over the top costume aesthetic (think Abbott and Costello). With plenty of bombastic chutzpah and rhythmic sexiness in the score, which makes loose use of the gloriously tuneful music of Russian scientist and part-time composer, Alexander Borodin (Polovtsian Dances, In the Steppes of Central Asia), Kismet somehow rectifies its several reckless plot fails, at least musically. Art, Design & Architecture Museum welcomes new director and reopens to visitors

FTER A PANDEMIC-INDUCED CLOSURE OF MORE THAN A YEAR-ANDA-HALF, during which exhibitions appeared solely online, UC Santa Barbara’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum has reopened its galleries to the public with three shows, a schedule of events, and a new director.

Gabriel Ritter, an expert in Japanese modern and contemporary art and in museum studies, joins the campus from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia). At UC Santa Barbara he will both head the AD&A Museum and teach as a new faculty member in the Department of History of Art and Architecture (HAA).

“We are pleased to welcome Gabriel Ritter to UC Santa Barbara to lead our Art, Design & Architecture Museum into the future as our new director,” said Chancellor Henry T. Yang. “With his robust experience at top art institutions, he has the expertise and vision to grow and diversify our permanent collections and help our campus and local community discover important works through gallery exhibitions. In his additional faculty role within our Department of History of Art and Architecture, Dr. Ritter will significantly contribute to our academic programs in art history and museum studies and enrich the education of our students.”

Prior to his five years as Mia’s curator and head of contemporary art, Ritter held curatorial positions at the Dallas Museum of Art and at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. He has curated a large number of influential exhibitions, with an emphasis on the work of emerging and underrepresented artists from the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Ritter holds a doctorate from UCLA. Bringing academic passion for critical inquiry into art history, and deep professional experience in art curation, Ritter will shepherd the ongoing evolution of the museum and play a key role in expanding the HAA’s museum studies program.

“I am really excited about the promise the AD&A Museum holds as a teaching institution that, first and foremost, serves students and faculty on campus,” Ritter said. “I see the campus community as our core audience and our most important stakeholders, and am excited to connect with UCSB students and faculty and see how the AD&A Museum can be a more active partner in their academic/collegiate lives. a university museum like the AD&A Museum has at its disposal. The possibilities of partnering with student, faculty, and alumni on future exhibitions and programming seem endless.”

“On behalf of the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts, I am delighted to welcome Gabriel Ritter to our campus as director of the Art, Design & Architecture Museum and as associate professor in the Department of the History of Art & Architecture,” said Mary Hancock, acting dean of humanities and fine arts. “Ritter’s academic training in modern Japanese art, his experience in contemporary art curation, and his skills in community building and outreach will enable him Gabriel Ritter to lead the AD&A Museum into its sixth decade as an innovative campus institution and cultural resource for the entire Santa Barbara community.”

It’s a community Ritter is familiar with already. A native of Los Angeles, he frequently visited Santa Barbara with his parents growing up, touring the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, eating at Joe’s Café and meandering the long-beloved, now long-gone bookstore Earthling. The fond memories and beauty of Santa Barbara were part of what drew Ritter to the university. But bigger still, he said, was “its unique location between Los Angeles and San Francisco.”

“While I am still familiarizing myself with the cultural specificities of the Central Coast, there is something to be said for being in close proximity to these major cultural hubs, but also having the distance to cultivate a community’s own identity on their own terms,” Ritter said. “Additionally, there are particular assets that are unique to UCSB such as the museum’s Architecture & Design Collection (ADC) and the library’s California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives. Having these amazing resources at our fingertips is really special and will provide endless opportunities for future research and potential exhibitions.”

Coming into his new dual role, Ritter characterized it as a “dream job,” enabling him to connect with young scholars on matters of art, equity, the role of art in society and how the museum field can, and needs, to adapt. It also, he hopes, will allow him to “emphasize the social dimension of art in the museum’s presentations.”

“Our visitors should see themselves — their identities and their realities — reflected in the work exhibited, while also being challenged to empathize with contrary truths, opinions, and ways of being,” Ritter said. “I feel strongly that the ideal environment for these conversations is the university art museum, where students, faculty, staff, and community members alike can engage with a diverse range of art practices with open-mindedness and criticality. In this way, art can provide an important lens for cultivating empathy and understanding of others, while also providing a framework to actively question and potentially dismantle systems of oppression many are faced with on a daily basis.”

Silvia Perea, curator of the ADC and, until Ritter arrived, acting director of the museum, said her new colleague will bolster the AD&A Museum’s endeavors to “become an even more inclusive think tank about social agency and an even more powerful incubator of related actions.”

“Gabriel Ritter has worked in some of the greatest and largest museums in the U.S., which operate with extensive networks, ambitious programs, and powerful fundraising means,” Perea said. “Based on his rich experience at these museums, he will grow the AD&A Museum’s standing on campus, in our community, and beyond. His managerial and curatorial background in those global institutions will benefit the continued expansion and care of our collections while enhancing the museum’s digital outreach and service. Additionally, his expertise in modern and contemporary East Asian art will favor the museum’s longstanding interest in expanding our holdings of this origin and attracting to our galleries more members of the Asian community.”

As a new associate professor of the history of art and architecture, Ritter will also tap into his professional experience to “develop courses in museum studies that embrace non-western exhibition historiographies and explore comparative models of curatorial practice within a broad global context,” he said. A course he’s already planned for spring quarter will look at topical issues facing the museum field, such as equitable representation.

“The UCSB Department of History of Art & Architecture is filled with such amazing scholars and really cultivates a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach,” he said. “Their emphasis on global perspectives and intercultural exchange is very close to how I’ve approached my own research and curatorial projects in the past, so I think I will be very much at home.

The prospect of working cross-departmentally with colleagues in other areas is also incredibly exciting.”

He’s got a perfect learning lab in the museum: Ritter said he’ll use the AD&A Museum galleries “as an expanded classroom, and the museum’s permanent collection as teaching tools for educating and inspiring the next generation of art historians and museum curators.”

Ritter’s arrival is a win-win, then — for the museum he now runs and for the academic department he has joined.

“Gabriel Ritter’s presence in the department permits us to expand further our interdisciplinary emphasis to the transpacific projects fostered by the departments of East Asian languages and cultural studies, art, film and media studies, and English, among others,” said Laurie Monahan, department chair of HAA. “We look forward to his input and participation in our Museum Studies program, which we are planning to develop more extensively at both the graduate and undergraduate level in the coming years, and welcome the opportunity to work with the AD&A Museum.”

Mesa Studio Artist Tour Returns

ORE THAN EVER BEFORE, A TRAVELING SMORGASBORD FOR THE EYES describes this year’s Mesa Artists Studio Tour.

The 17th annual event on November 6th and 7th showcases a wider variety of art styles and media thanks to veteran tour members’ artistic evolutions, and an influx of new artists and media. As usual, the public is invited for free to take everything in at home studios scattered over a square mile of scenic Mesa hillsides and byways.

“Although the tour geography hasn’t changed over the years, we’ve expanded our artistic boundaries to appeal to wider tastes and so that our visitors can enjoy a more varied experience,” said Myla Kato, a tour member.

“As talented established artists have moved to the Mesa area, we have invited the best to join us. There are 14 of us now.”

Artworks on display and for sale will include sophisticated basketry sculpture, humorous folk art, traditional Japanese woodblock prints, and wall plaques built on mosaics and glass.

Two-dimensional art will span a broad swath of genres as well. Along with traditional California landscapes and seascapes, there will be modern figurative works as well as portraits of ethnic peoples and up-close realistic florals. Themes range from still-life to wildlife and from Sun Hill, by Ellen Yeomans, oil, 12 x 12 inches mystic dreamscapes to pure abstracts. Media include oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and mixed-media. Works range in size from almost postcard, to nearly mural dimensions.

The tour footprint covers the Mesa neighborhood and some adjacent blocks of the upper Westside of Santa Barbara. That is small enough that visitors have time to stop by each studio at leisure, Kato said. “We try to make it easy for people to see a lot without the hassle. Some people even do the tour on bicycles.”

For many years, tour members have encouraged their guests to ask questions about the art on exhibit. The artists take pride in telling about their tools, creative Zebras by Nancy Hull, pastel, 16 x 20 inches techniques and inspirations.

For instance, printmaker Sara Woodburn shows how her hand-operated press works, and landscapist Nancy Hull explains the howto’s of pastels versus oils.

The Art and Soul of Dance!

OARING AERIALISTS, PASSIONATE TANGO, MESMERIZING BALLROOM DANCE, AND MORE will grace the stage of the Marjorie Luke Theatre next weekend as community members gather to enjoy BASSH: The Art and Soul of Dance.

One of Santa Barbara’s longest running dance shows, BASSH has captivated audiences for 20 years, promoting appreciation and awareness of local studios and talent. Now, in its largest show to date, BASHH will present 35 performances including dance styles and cultures from around the world at 7:30pm on November 5th and 6th.

“When you’re sitting there, you’re just

drawn into each performance because each one is so different....You’re sitting on the edge of your seat, sometimes dancing in your seat; you’re just anticipating what’s coming next,” shared BASSH founder Derrick Curtis. “My message each year is always to encourage people to dance and move.”

A dancer himself, Curtis has helped people discover their love of dancing for close to 30 years. Previously, he taught his patients dance while working as a recreational therapist at Cottage Hospital.

He has also taught ballroom dance and country line dance at Santa Barbara City College, as well as inspired young students at La Cumbre Junior High School and

In 1998, Curtis had the idea to showcase ballroom dancing on a local level, resulting in his launching a series of small cabaret dinner shows at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club.

Eventually, Santa Barbara Dance Alliance helped take the show to the stage, officially taking on the name BASSH in 2000 to stand for “Ballroom, Argentine tango, Swing, Salsa, and Hip-Hop.” Today, Curtis virtually teaches dance to the Santa Barbara community following his recent move to Utah, still producing BASSH’s 2021 show joined by Alexandra King, Jatila Van Der Veen, and Roxana Bonderson. He will also dance in the upcoming show, marking his second local BASSH performance since undergoing a partial leg amputation earlier this year.

“Santa Barbara is a community that is all about wellness, and dance adds to that and serves that for the community,” explained Curtis. “I’ve had so many people that had never danced, but they were introduced to it and all of a sudden they’re in love with it because of what it gives them.”

Despite its acronym, BASSH celebrates all styles of dance. Now sponsored by Art Without Limits, BASSH extends an open call to the community for interested studios, choreographers, and dancers to participate in their annual show. Accordingly, BASSH has grown to encompass a broad selection of dance genres that reflect a wide range of international cultures.

This November, BASSH audiences can anticipate viewing 35 performances spanning tango, ballroom, hula, and contemporary styles as well as Latin, Persian, and Spanish dance. There will also be Bukharan dance, a dance from the Tang Dynasty, Afro-Brazilian dancers and drummers, aerialists, and much more.

As all of BASSH’s performances feature area studios, choreographers, and dancers, the show truly reflects the sheer talent, diverse interests, and passion of Santa Barbara’s dance community. In viewing the show, guests not only develop a greater sense of appreciation for dance, but also learn about available local resources if they are interested in dancing on stage themselves one day.

“When [you’re] sitting there watching these different performers, encouraging them, if you see something you like, here are people, here’s where you can go,” said Curtis. “It’s a great way for the studios to present themselves to the community.”
