New Film Festival Directors Announced Along with Expanded Programs Serving K-12 Students and Wheelchair Users of All Ages for the 12-year-old Nonprofit.
State and County beaches.
All field trips (K-12 and Trax) are entirely free because of grants and private donors. NatureTrack also covers the cost for transportation to and from the local trails and beaches for participants.
NatureTrack Field Trips
Engaging people in nature in multiple ways, this small but powerful nonprofit begins its 12th season with a bang, booking more than 100 NatureTrack field trips – and the school year has barely begun! Docent-led trips take place on the Central Coast from Guadalupe Dunes to Carpinteria State Beach and inland to Nojoqui Falls, Midland School trails, Sedgewick Reserve, and more.
Founder of NatureTrack, Sue Eisaguirre, speculated the immense surge in popularity of the NatureTrack Field Trip program is because the teachers are trying to find the “new normal.” “Our trips are more than just learning about nature, it’s about developing a love for our natural world,” Eisaguirre added. She founded NatureTrack in 2011 initially to provide outdoor field trips for students K – 12 to connect with nature and learn about the outdoors, where learning literally comes alive.
In response, NatureTrack welcomes volunteers throughout the year. If you have a passion for nature and enjoy kids, this is the perfect place for you. If this sounds like what you’d like to do, call Eisaguirre at (805) 886-2047 or email her at Sue@NatureTrack.org. The volunteers have as much fun as the kids! Many of the docents have been with the program since its inception.
The next occasion for wheelchair users to experience Freedom Trax is this coming Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 5 to 7 pm at Leadbetter Beach. There will be eight Freedom Trax devices available. We do ask for people to RSVP on the website: https://naturetrack.org under Access to the Beach for All!
“We’re trying a new time rather than the usual Sunday afternoons from 12 to 4,” noted Eisaguirre. “Plus, it’s a great time to enjoy the cool vibe at Leadbetter.” She continued, “We’re hoping to get some new faces to join us for this incredible experience. Gustavo, one of our first-time Freedom Trax users put it simply, exclaiming as he whizzed down the beach, ‘It’s faaan-taaas-tiic!’”
when Sue reached out to Mitchka and Francisco’s former UCSB professor Chris Jenkins in the Film & Media Studies Dept. Eisaguirre had approached Jenkins looking for recommendations on past students who would be interested in helping NatureTrack with a short video for the new wheelchair user program using Freedom Trax. “As soon as we started talking to Sue,” Saberi said, “we were immediately on the same page about the approach. I realized then we would work very well with her.”
Lopez revealed, “Working on the documentary The Accessible Outdoors last year was eye-opening for me as an able-bodied person who didn’t know too many people who used wheelchairs. I was aware of the ADA requiring public restrooms and buses to be accessible. What I never thought about was the public beaches and trails aren’t accessible for people like this…now, I often find myself thinking everywhere I go – would a wheelchair user be able to get to this spot?”
Gregarious, passionate, and energetic, Gareth Kelly is excited to bring his unique persona to the Development Director role and is looking forward to creating lasting local partnerships and collaborations with the business community and beyond. Originally from the UK, Kelly is an award-winning filmmaker, author, and journalist. Currently he works with director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) at Chicago Pacific Entertainment based here. He also worked alongside NTFF co-directors on their films in a co-producer capacity.
Freedom Trax
“Throughout the past 12 years, more than 30,000 kids have participated in our program. Until recently, we didn’t have a way to include students, teachers or volunteers with disabilities,” she shared. Now by incorporating Freedom Trax devices, which convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered, all-terrain vehicle, it allows the users to navigate over dry and wet sand as well as trails – independently. “‘This is a real game-changer’ is the most often heard response to this program which has been covered in the media at nearly every outing.”
Wheelchair users have made tracks in the sand from Pismo Beach in SLO County to San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura County and numerous Santa Barbara
NatureTrack Film Festival
Announcing the new film festival team, Mitchka Saberi and Francisco Lopez will serve as co-directors for the 5th festival planned for 2023, with Gareth Kelly joining as Development Director. (See the cover photo.)
The NTFF tagline ‘Igniting Passion for Nature through Film’ supports the heart of the program – bringing people and nature together. “It’s human nature to protect something if you enjoy it, appreciate it, and understand it,” Eisaguirre declared. “By promoting a festival which creates passion for nature, we are encouraging stewardship of our natural world and furthers NatureTrack’s mission.”
Film submissions for the Fifth Anniversary fest opens November 1 through June 30, 2023, with the festival tentatively set for October in Santa Barbara and the following weekend in Los Olivos with the awardwinning films and others specially curated for the town where it all began.
The co-directors were introduced to NatureTrack

Thousand Steps Beach Access Stairway Reopened After Repairs
FOLLOWING SIX MONTHS OF REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS, the popular Thousand Steps beach access stairway in the Mesa neighborhood is welcoming beach visitors once again. Originally named Camino a Mar, the stairway has helped community members access the beach from the Mesa since 1925. The recent repairs made by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department addressed the erosion caused by regular wear and its coastal environment. Restorations included the demolition and reconstruction of the lower 24 steps and installation of seven additional steps, adding a new concrete guardrail at the mid-way main landing, and installing a continuous handrail from the street level to the beach.
Changes were also made to improve drainage and reduce the growth of algae, and a bike rack was installed at the top of the stairs. A concrete apron to reinforce the stairs at the beach level is also planned to be installed sometime this fall or in winter 2023, during which time the stairs will be closed to public access again.

Over Three Tons of Waste Removed On Coastal Cleanup Day
ITWAS AN OVERWHELMINGLY SUCCESSFUL EFFORT cleaning 65 miles and picking up 3.28 tons of waste on Coastal Cleanup Day, with Explore Ecology leading 1,305 volunteers on Saturday, September 17th from Rincon Beach Park to Guadalupe Dunes.
“We had the most sites ever this year with 32 cleanup locations, and the most volunteers ever who collected more trash than we have in any other year organizing the cleanup. It’s truly amazing what we can do in a single day to help keep our waterways and oceans clean,” commented Lydia Ballantine, Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator for Explore Ecology.
Coastal Cleanup Day is part of an international event. With 60 percent of the cleanup sites reporting, the California count stands at 27,185 volunteers who picked up 220,861 pounds of trash and an additional 29,702 pounds of recyclable materials. The total so far statewide is 250,563 pounds or 125 tons.
“Volunteers of all ages came together for a common cause- a clean coastline. A lot of debris was picked up and removed from creeks, beaches, parks, and inland areas. Our beaches are not only cleaner, but 6,557 pounds of material will no longer be flowing into the ocean. That is a big win for wildlife.” said Jill Cloutier, PR Director for Explore Ecology.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Recognized as National Leader in Treating Sepsis
Hospital Earns Sepsis Certification by the Joint Commission
SEPTEMBER
WAS SEPSIS AWARENESS MONTH and there has never been a better time to discuss sepsis.
Sepsis is not an infection. It is not contagious. Sepsis is the body’s reaction to an infection.
More than 1.5 million people in the United States develop sepsis each year, and at least 270,000 Americans die from sepsis annually.
Normally, the immune system fights and controls infections, but for unknown reasons, this process breaks down during sepsis. As sepsis progresses, the immune system stops fighting the infection and becomes overactive, which can lead to severe sepsis, and even septic shock.
This can result in irreversible tissue damage, organ failure, and even death. Like a stroke or heart attack, sepsis is a medical emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment with fluids and antibiotics.
A person with an infection is diagnosed with sepsis based on a set of signs and symptoms – such as high or low temperature, cough, chest pain from pneumonia, frequent urinating from a urinary tract infection, or redness or pus at a wound.
Sepsis progresses to severe sepsis when there are signs of organ dysfunction, such as difficulty breathing, low or no urine output, abnormal liver tests, and changes in mental status. Nearly all patients with severe sepsis require treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU).
Septic shock, the most severe level of sepsis, develops when your blood pressure drops to dangerous levels and your organs stop functioning normally.
People who are at higher risk of contracting an infection or are considered “immunocompromised” are at higher risk of developing sepsis. These include the very young, the very old, those with chronic illnesses, and those with a weakened or impaired immune system.
If someone you know has a serious infection or is very sick with any sepsis symptoms, seek medical help right away. Take them to the nearest Emergency Department or call 911 and be sure to let them know you are concerned about sepsis.
On average, approximately 30% of patients diagnosed with severe sepsis do not survive. Up to 50% of survivors suffer from post-sepsis syndrome. Early detection and treatment are essential for survival and limiting disability for survivors.
The good news is most individuals fully recover. However, some may experience complications such as decreased cognitive and physical function, post-traumatic stress disorder, organ dysfunction, and amputations.
Be proactive to prevent sepsis. You can prevent infections by following public health guidelines: wash your hands frequently, clean common surfaces often, avoid shaking hands, and sneeze or cough into your elbow. Get all recommended vaccinations - including annual flu and COVID vaccines, clean scrapes and wounds, and don’t pop blisters.
Seek treatment if an infection becomes severe, and follow medical advice, including taking all prescribed antibiotics and antivirals.
Most importantly, know that Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is recognized as a national leader in successfully treating sepsis. The hospital has achieved Sepsis Certification by the Joint Commission for improving the quality of patient care with more accurate assessments, standardized treatments, and reduced variabilities for sepsis management.

The Magic Tree House
By Daisy Scott / VOICEREADERS AWAY TO THE FANTASTICAL REALM OF CAMELOT, THE ICE AGE, the moon, and beyond, it’s no wonder that series by Mary Pope Osborne has become a household name. Ideal for first to third-grade students, the series has enchanted readers for over 30 years, with 50 plus books and counting. Playing with history and magic, each installment follows siblings Jack and Annie as they explore different moments in time around the world. Together, the series serves as a fun introduction to famous individuals and events, sparking readers’ curiosity with each adventure.
WHISKING
Jack and Annie are able to embark on their travels via the magical books they find inside a tree house. Kicking off with Dinosaurs Before Dark, the siblings visit the Cretaceous period by reading one of the tree house’s books about dinosaurs. As the series continues, Jack and Annie encounter mummies in ancient Egypt, the Titanic, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and more.
Eventually, the duo is sent on specific missions by two figures from Arthurian legend: the enchantress Morgan le Fey and the wizard Merlin. This helps divide the series between its straightforward chapter books and more complex “Merlin Missions,” which are better suited for stronger readers.
This premise makes The Magic Tree House series inherently educational as well as entertaining, letting young readers discover historical events such as the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle and Pompeii’s destruction alongside Jack and Annie. The later addition of Merlin and other magical figures also help readers learn about literary history and introduces them to popular myths.
In reading the series as a whole, students gain a working knowledge of many topics that will be explored in their later classes — although it is worth noting that the majority of the books focus on European and American history. Readers who are especially fascinated by a topic can also read the series’ accompanying nonfiction research guides, which dive into the facts behind Jack and Annie’s quests.
Perhaps more important than this educational aspect, though, is the The Magic Tree House series’ ability to inspire conversations about the value of revisiting history. Just as Jack and Annie return home safe and a bit wiser after each of their journeys, readers may begin wondering where they would like to travel and what questions they would ask if given the chance.

Reimagining our World: The Architecture of Collage
By Daisy Scott / VOICETRANSFORMATIVE AND TRANSPORTIVE,
Marshall Brown’s collages beckon viewers to completely reassess their surroundings while adding a dash of intrigue and a hint of whimsy. Now on view at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, The Architecture of Collage: Marshall Brown presents a bold reimagining of architecture and photography that is as visually captivating as it is conceptually. The exhibition opened with a premier artist’s reception on September 30th, drawing dozens of museum supporters and art aficionados.
Keeping his vision focused on the future in hopes of inspiring people to reconsider their surroundings, the artist explained to VOICE: “The future is really uncertain and it is yet to be written, so when I make the collages of architecture, or in some cases cities, it’s really trying to picture or embody alternative realities.”
“I think especially in this day and age, in our era, there’s a kind of realism that fools people into thinking that things will always be much the same as they are today, and that we don’t have a lot of power to change that,” Brown continued. “And so these images, I think, fight against that way of perceiving the world.”
The director of the Princeton Urban Imagination Center at Princeton University, Brown’s art combines images he discovers from books and architectural publications to create physically impossible
but nonetheless compelling structures. Each structure hovers above an unseen or non-existent ground, displacing the viewer in both space and time, as his collages often combine elements across architectural styles and periods.
SBMA’s exhibition features works from each of Brown’s four collage series, including the premiere of The Prisons of Invention and Maps of Berlin. Displayed together, the former series draws inspiration from 18th century architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose manipulations of Roman architecture inspired Brown’s juxtapositions of modern elements. Maps of Berlin expands Brown’s collage work to a cartographic level, reimagining the city’s structure on a towering scale.
Works from Brown’s previously displayed series, Chimera, and Je est un autre, are housed in an adjacent gallery. These collages emphasize Brown’s skill at creating a distinct sense of place out of fragments. Several collages feature people, heightening viewers’ wonder by suggesting these realms may
have inhabitants. Others evoke emotions such as longing and nostalgia through their use of black and white photographs, reworking familiar scenes and items into new, but not unwelcome structures.
“These collages are exercises in the freedom of imagination and achieve what contemporary art does so well — suggests that the world can be different from what it is, without specifying concretely what that might be,” said James Glisson, Curator of Contemporary Art.
Brown’s exhibition continues SBMA’s recent focus on contemporary art, following on the heels of its September opening of For Opacity, questioning how we define portraiture. October also sees the opening of photography exhibition A Time of Gifts, with January’s opening of Scenes from a Marriage: Ed & Nancy Kienholz bringing contemporary assemblage.
“Two of our fall curators concern themselves with contemporary art,” shared Larry Feinberg, SBMA Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and CEO. “We have twin engines working on contemporary shows now at the museum, and they have very different visions, so, yes, you can expect a good number of our shows to be art of the moment.”
The Architecture of Collage will remain on display through January 7th, 2023.
Tosca
Review by Daniel Kepl / VOICEacting sensibilities, Tigges dominated each of his scenes, as well he should – his character is a colorful badass.
OSB’s Chrisman Studio Artist Program alum, bass Colin Ramsey, was a keen presence on stage in the role of Cesare Angelotti, former Consul of the Roman Republic installed by Napoleon, now on the run from Baron Scarpia and the Neapolitan authorities. Ramsey’s voice, a deep pool of sound, could not be ignored as he took on the Angelotti persona brilliantly. Bass Ben Lowe (Sacristan/Jailer), tenor Matthew Peterson (police agent Spoletta), and Kyra Maal-King (Shepherdess) aided the action with strong vocal and acting finesse.
Stage Director Layna Chianakas, familiar to OSB audiences for directing smaller pieces for the company between 2019 to 2022, grabbed the reins of this, her first full length opera for the company, and made sure the action stayed at a level of electrifying tension and terse choreography throughout. Yuki Izumihara, in charge of Projection and Set Design, crafted a collage of video imagery by Filmmaker Zach Mendez that discreetly married visuals to the action taking place on her efficient set.
THE
BLOOD-CURDLING FATE MOTIF in low brass and percussion which launches Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca (1900) and sets a mesmerizing horror story in motion, brought a full house at the Granada Theatre last Saturday to hushed silence for over two hours, as Opera Santa Barbara opened its 2022-2023 season with a oneperformance-only production steeped in high drama and filled with glorious music. Artistic and General Director, Kostis Protopapas, has helmed his company through the vagaries of the past two years with sometimes stubborn, often visionary, but always resolute determination to serve his audience and their understanding of the world around them. It’s called selecting repertoire to meet the times in which we live, and Tosca, though enveloped in historical events from the past, is a universal story about the upheaval of wars and the resiliency of womanhood.
Set design saw the OSB Orchestra on stage, visible but hidden discreetly behind a couple walls of open scaffolding on which various points of action would take place. A large screen, suspended in front of the orchestra and behind the scaffolding, was used to excellent effect for video projections that accompanied, without overwhelming, the psychological messaging of the opera.
Set in war-torn Rome circa 1800, the beginning skirmishes of what would become the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), Tosca is at one level, about the fates of people caught up in political upheaval and military struggle. Victors and vanquished chase and dodge one another throughout the three acts of Puccini’s musical drama. Artists, politicians, the head of the secret police, a famous and strong-willed singer: these characters and their disparate needs and interests shift and churn in an elastic milieu of give and take, success and failure, life and death. Power, deception, betrayal, murder, self-sacrifice, lust, and karma form the glue of the opera’s complex subtext.
In the title role of Floria Tosca, Greek soprano Eleni Calenos easily took command of the stage as well as her character. A classic Puccini heroine, Tosca becomes increasingly selfaware and courageous as the opera progresses and circumstances become more threatening.
So too Calenos, whose voice became powerfully steely as Tosca’s act of just murder and self-sacrifice takes its inevitable course.
Tenor Adam Diegel as Tosca’s lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, enjoyed a bright and persuasive high tessitura, notwithstanding a slightly frayed moment or two around the edges of his voice during sustained high tones on Saturday. Diegel’s acting, his confidence on stage, and his penetrating vocal timbre, made for a near perfect Cavaradossi.
Baritone Wayne Tigges as Baron Scarpia, chief of the secret police of the Kingdom of Naples which has recently occupied Rome after the withdrawal of Napoleon’s troops, took the role and ran with it. Possessing a resonant, amber vocal color and superbly thoughtful
Helena Kuukka, Lighting Design and Director of Production, gave dimension, color, and meaning to each scene in Puccini’s sprawling masterpiece. Heather Sterling (Hair/Makeup Design) and Stacie Logue (Costume Manager) authenticated the look of Tosca with spot-on stylings circa 1800. The OSB Chorus under the masterful coaching of Principal Pianist and Music Administrator Timothy Accurso, packed a powerful vocal wallop, and the Ojai Pixies chorus (altar boys and girls) under the direction of Julija Zonic, fulfilled their tasks musical and theatrical, admirably. Special kudos to the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra under the alert conducting panache of Artistic and General Director Protopapas - a splendid, deliciously overwhelming immersion in Puccini’s magnificent music.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4TH - Even with award winning tri-tip, pulled pork, and BBQ chicken, the 1230 State St. location in Santa Barbara was not a good fit for Beans BBQ. Owners hope to relocate. 14 years as caterers - that continues.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH - The Coastland store in Carpinteria with studentmade products is closing on Linden Ave. and moving to make room for a new development. The store is both a sales location and a workshop. The new site on Carpinteria Ave. will open November 1st.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH - After more than three decades, Fashion Eyes at 730 State St., Santa Barbara closed this weekend. Up to 80 percent off on all ranges of glasses. Wonderful local owners who have done sales and repairs for countless customers, the old-style way.

Cruising – Mega Yacht
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICEOW! IT’S ALREADY OCTOBER… what happened to September? I think I caught a quick glance of its departure on a night last week as the evening sun slipped quietly beneath the horizon. And what a glorious way for summer to fade into our next season!
Not to be outdone, autumn brought the return of the mighty cruise ships… five during the last week of September to be exact. Anchored off shore, these massive passenger vessels from the Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian, and Princess Cruise Lines seem to be reveling in our present coronavirus downturn. These gigantic floating hotels and entertainment centers accommodate thousands of passengers who browse Santa Barbara’s iconic sights, shops, and eateries, or lounge leisurely on the beach. Around this time of year seeing the shadow of a huge structure hulking in the mist off shore comes as no surprise… unless, of course, it DOES!
The surprise to which I refer dropped anchor the last Tuesday of September!
Officially listed on the Waterfront Department’s schedule as simply another cruise ship, the Scenic Eclipse’s profile and sleek design had the contours of one of the super yachts that occasionally visit our shores. Built to the specifications of an industrialist or Royal from a far off country, these personal pleasure crafts traverse the globe with family and close friends, a selection of toys, and a very large crew. Who else would need two helicopters on board if not to distribute each invited guest to their desired location?
Thanks to Santa Barbara’s favorite news guru, John Palminteri, I learned the truth about the Scenic Eclipse: as advertised, she is an actual cruise ship and not the imagined privately owned yacht, with a maximum passenger load of only 228! “From the moment you step foot on board, luxury is everywhere,” trumpets the ship’s website. “Seamless and fluid, your time with us will feel exclusive, elegant, and luxurious… the way your private butler pours your perfect drink, just at the right moment, the unforgettable sights you’ll see as you embark on a subaquatic, underwater journey in our on board submarine... the warm comfort of the Jacuzzi bubbles as they rise up to soothe and relax you after a hard day’s exploring.” And they didn’t even mention those two helicopters!
Scenic Eclipse is a six-star, ultra-luxury super yacht designed to travel comfortably in all marine environments globally: the Americas, Antarctica, Europe, and the Mediterranean, as well as the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords. Owned by Australian river cruise operator, Scenic Group, she’s the company’s first ocean cruise ship designed with ratings that enable her to navigate through Arctic and Antarctic waters and to navigate the most challenging seas safely. She incorporates state-of-the-art engineering and an external design inspired by the sleek contours of a mega yacht and boasts a length of 551 feet, a breadth of 71, and a gross tonnage of 17,085, cruising at a speed 17 knots. Equipped with all the luxurious comforts and transportation necessary to accommodate the 200 plus lucky passengers’ time aboard, the Scenic Eclipse comes as close as possible to the privately owned and personally designed super yacht. The Crown Princess on the other hand - anchored off shore two days later - has a gross tonnage of 114,000, a length of almost 1,000 feet, and accommodates 2,080 passengers and a crew of 1,201.
As the World’s First Discovery Yacht specifically intended for global exploration (thus the helicopters and the on-board submarine) the Scenic Eclipse’s eight decks include ultra-luxury guest accommodations, a selection of cafes and lounges, gourmet dining with a variety of cuisines, outdoor and indoor pools and spas, a theater, gym, and yoga and pilates studios, with terraces and observation areas on every level. How good does that sound?
The beauty, smooth design, and size of this unusual vessel certainly caught my eye – and my never ending curiosity! The only thing missing now is the cruise itself and the warm comfort of the Jacuzzi bubbles after a hard day’s experience in the lap of luxury!

Oscar BY Georges Bizet JonathanRemembering and honoring Gordon Guy
The Heart of New House
By Kerry Methner, PhD / VOICE WITH A SMILE THAT WARMEDHEARTS and an attitude that nurtured hope, Gordon Guy made his mark in Santa Barbara’s recovery community for over a decade. Guy was posthumously honored with the Heart of New House Award, on Saturday, at New House Santa Barbara’s 6th Annual benefit luncheon that Guy established for the program. Taking place at Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, the event raises funds for New House resident scholarships and program expenses.
Jeff Daugherty, Board President, welcomed participants, sharing, “New House flourished under Gordon’s direction, we all miss him very much. Today gives us another opportunity to acknowledge our sincere thanks.”
Steve Olsen, Board Treasurer took a lead role in organizing the event after Guy related to him earlier this year that he would like the event to continue in his absence.
Daugherty also welcomed Gordon’s sister, Wendy Goodenow, all the way from Hawaii. “Gordon helped to save lives,” Daugherty added.
“He had a personality so welcoming that people would gravitate toward him. He had that wonderful ability to make people feel good about themselves. I observed the extraordinary impact Gordan had on the hundreds of men that he mentored and shaped and helped them to become better people.”
Since opening its doors in 1955, the team estimates that as many as 25,000 or more men have resided at New House.
Also on the agenda was an announcement of the appointment of Adam Burridge as the new Executive Director.
As for raising funds, a raffle with wonderful prizes and a paddle raise rounded out the event, that was then topped with a heart shaped desert.

By Harlan Green, Special to VOICE, Sept 29, 2022About Deflation, and a Recession?
FED IS BEGINNING TO EASE ITS PURCHASES of Treasury and Mortgage-backed securities in its push to raise interest rates and lower inflation, a policy called Quantitative Tightening (QT) as opposed to the various Quantitative Easing efforts (QE) when it wanted to boost inflation by increasing the money supply in 2009 at the end of the Great Recession.
THE
But what if QT, accompanied with the Fed’s short term interest rate hikes—three percent to date with its federal funds rate up to a range of three to 3.25 percent, which is the highest it has been since early 2008— results in shrinking the money supply so much that it causes a recession, or worse?
By Harlan Greenleast about the future course of inflation – the Fed would be wise to pause its rate hikes and wait until a more reliable assessment of the situation is possible.”
Some Wall Streeters are joining the chorus to slow down the rate increases.
Cathie Wood, CEO of hedge fund Ark Invest, and a vocal proponent of deflation, is getting a few high-profile supporters even as price pressures continued to “surprise to the upside,” as reported by CNBC.
It’s possible if the Fed continues to boost interest rates while the worldwide energy and food crunch, which is the real reason wholesale and retail prices have risen so fast, ends almost as quickly as it began.
The Fed would then have to reverse course for fear we might fall into a disinflationary spiral, or worse; deflation as Japan experienced in a decade of lost growth. QE enabled our recovery from the Great Recession, a recession almost as bad in terms of lost assets as the Great Depression.
I reported recently that economists such as Nobel PrizeWinner Joe Stiglitz are beginning to signal that possibility.
“Monetary policy typically affects economic performance with long and variable lags, especially in times of upheaval,” said Professor Stiglitz in a recent Project Syndicate article. “Given the depth of geopolitical, financial, and economic uncertainty – not
Jeffrey Gundlach and Elon Musk recently joined Wood’s camp in calling for a decline for prices, expressing worries that the Federal Reserve might go too far. Bond King Gundlach warned of deflation risk on Tuesday, urging investors to buy long-term Treasuries. Meanwhile, the Tesla CEO called falling commodity prices “neither subtle nor secret” and tweeted to his 100 million followers that “a major Fed rate hike risks deflation.”
Wood has been warning about deflation since last year and is now doubling down on her call as several leading indicators she watches are pointing to deflationary forces instead of inflation, says CNBC.
“Leading inflation indicators like gold and copper are flagging the risk of deflation,” Wood said. “Even the oil price has dropped more than 35 percent from its peak, erasing most of the gain this
year.” Gold prices have slid six percent so far this year. “Inflation is turning into deflation,” she said.
There was a real deflation danger in 2009 and a reason for QE. More precisely, the retail Consumer Price Index used to measure retail inflation had sunk to a minus -1.96 percent with little sign of rising after the shock of the Lehman Brothers collapse and possibility that many other firms on Wall Street were also in danger of collapse.
Congress and the GW Bush administration raised more than $700 billion to save the banks at the time, but it took a year to bring the inflation rate back up to two percent.
That’s our past history and seems to put the Fed between a rock and a hard place, as the saying goes. Should it allow the inflation rate to continue to decline on its own, as it is doing, or speed up the process of decline, thus threatening a more severe downturn? Yikes, what a situation to be in!

Paperbark Tree
Melaleuca quinquenervia
By David Gress / Special to VOICET IS HARD TO BELIEVE that the Paperbark Tree, one of the most drought tolerant trees grown locally, is native to a habitat of brackish swamps, wetlands, and sloughs.
This tree’s tolerance for extreme drought, its robust and graceful growth habit, and its attractive evergreen foliage, have made it a commonly planted landscape tree in Santa Barbara since its introduction here in the early 1900s.
In our Mediterranean climate, it typically grows quite rapidly to a height of 30- to 50-feet tall with a spread of 20- to 30-feet. It begins with a narrow or pyramidal crown that grows more rounded and spreading as it matures, frequently developing multiple ascending trunks. The new branches are pendulous and covered with leathery lanceolate-shaped leaves (2- to 4-inches long and ½- to 1-inch wide). The silky new leaves emerge with a yellowishbronze color that becomes flat green with age. The leaves are very aromatic when crushed. Its larger leaves are one of the main characteristics that distinguishes this species from other Melaleucas, giving it one of its common names, “Broadleaved Paperbark Tree.”
The tree’s white flowers form bottlebrushlike spikes on the ends of branches. Each spike (up to 6-inches long by 2-inches wide) contains many clusters of flowers, often in groups of three. The flower stamens are white to cream-colored and appear in bundles of five to ten. Flowering normally occurs from late summer to early fall but can occur sporadically throughout the year.
After pollination, the flowers are followed by dark brown woody seed capsules held in tight cylindrical clusters (up to 6-inches long) around the stem. The clusters can persist for one year or longer. Each capsule contains as many as 200 to 300 tiny seeds. A mature tree can produce up to 20 million seeds per year!
This tree’s most distinguishing feature - and the reason for its common name of “Paperbark Tree” - is its thick, white-beige, papery bark, which peels open in layers to form loose, ragged, rolls. While there are other Melaleuca species with papery bark, this species produces
bark that is much thicker and more impressive than the others.
The Paperbark Tree is native to coastal areas of eastern Australia, New Guinea, and New Caledonia. There, it grows primarily in swamps, wetlands, and estuaries, where the soil is often too salty or too acidic for other trees to grow.
The botanical name for Paperbark Tree is Melaleuca quinquenervia. The genus name, Melaleuca, comes from the Greek words “melas,” meaning “black,” and “leukos,” meaning “white,” because many trees in this genus have both blackish trunks and whiteish branches. The specific epithet, quinquenervia, is from the Latin words “quinque,” meaning “five,” and “nervus,” meaning “nerve” or “vein,” and refers to the five distinctive veins on each leaf.
In addition to the names “Paperbark Tree” and “Broadleaved Paperbark Tree,” this tree has other common names including, “Tea Tree,” “Swamp Tea Tree,” and “Cajeput.” The soft bark is useful as a natural tinder for lighting fires, which is the reason for the last common name, “Punk Tree.”
The Paperbark Tree has been utilized by indigenous people in Australia as the source for teas and for distilled oils used in traditional medicine. The bark has been used as wrapping material and in constructing shelters and canoes. The wood is resistant to decay in wet soil, making it quite good as fencing material. The fragrant and nectar-filled flowers are attractive to bees.
Today, essential oils made from the tree are used in a variety of cosmetic products, including perfumes, and in herbalism and natural medicine
for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
The Paperbark Tree does best in full sun to light shade. It can grow in practically any type of soil and is extremely drought tolerant once it is established. It does well as a single specimen tree or as a grove in the garden. While it is frequently planted as a multiple-trunked tree, perhaps as a substitute for clumping birch trees, it is best to give each tree sufficient room to grow as an individual. It is cold hardy to 25 degrees F. and can sustain foliage damage below that. It does not have any serious and insect or disease problems and requires only minimal pruning for clearances. Its roots can be more aggressive that other trees of this species, so do not plant it close to hardscapes and foundations.
This attractive and very sustainable tree makes a fine street tree (if root barriers are installed) and a great addition to any garden, park, or commercial planting, because of its beauty, generous shade, and year round visual interest.
Mature Paperbark Trees can be seen in the 400 to 800 blocks of Gutierrez Street (interspersed with other Melaleuca species), in the 100 block of East Cota Street, in the 400 block of South Milpas Street, in the 500 block of Castillo Street, in the 500 block of Bath Street, in the 2500 block of Calle Galicia, in the 1700 block of Calle Poniente, in the 700 block of Westwood Drive, and in the 200 block of Loyola Drive.
Tree-of-the-Month articles are sponsored by Santa Barbara Beautiful, whose mission includes increasing public awareness and appreciation of Santa Barbara’s many outstanding trees and, in a longtime partnership with the City Parks & Recreation Department, the funding and planting of trees along the City’s streets.
Those who wish to honor a special someone can do so with an attractive commemorative marker that will be installed at the base of an existing street tree in the City of Santa Barbara. Because Santa Barbara Beautiful has participated in the planting to date of over 13,000 street trees, there are plenty of trees from which to choose! Unite To Light The Night, An Artfully Immersive Fundraiser
UNITE
TO LIGHT, a nonprofit organization based in Santa Barbara, is breaking the mold for fundraising events with its inaugural event, Unite to Light the Night, October 6th through 8th. Merging art, culture, and social impact into immersive experiences over the course of three evenings, the basis of the fundraiser is an art exhibition around the theme of light. People of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds will have the ability to participate in at least one of the evenings.
Unite to Light manufactures and distributes solar lamps and solar chargers to people living without electricity.
“Including local artists stemmed from the wish to celebrate the power of light,” shared Megan Birney, CEO of Unite to Light. “An art exhibition is the perfect way to showcase light as not only an essential aspect of life, but also a creative medium that can bring people together.”
The exhibition will feature 33 local artists, ranging from art students, to globally recognized professionals. Over 40 works of art will be on display, including projection art, light mapping, sculptures, paintings, and photography.
Rob Skinner, CEO of The Towbes Group and Presenting Sponsor of the event noted, “At The Towbes Group, we often speak of community; about nurturing it; sustaining it and protecting it. The community that we endeavor to build and support is one that strives to create spaces and opportunities in which all can thrive. The Towbes Group is honored to be supporting Unite to Light’s mission to do just that.”
The unique aspect of this fundraiser is that it will run for three-consecutive days. All three nights will be held at the Community Arts Workshop at 631 Garden Street and run from 6 to 10pm. Most of the artwork will be exhibited inside, while all social components will be hosted in the spacious courtyard. Each evening is set to

have a unique atmosphere and program.
For the first night, Unite to Light is rolling out the red carpet for guests attending the Glow Gala, offering dinner and a show. The Glow Gala will unveil the exhibition and guests will be able to explore and interact with the art.
The Bright Bash on the second evening will be a multisensory dance party. Two house music DJs (SkyPounce and DJ MacIntyre) will be turning up the beats. Tickets include an open bar, light food by Nimitas Cuisine, flow art performances, and a glow-in-the-dark accessory station.
The third and final event is the Community Showcase, an evening open to the public. In addition to offering free admission, the organizers teamed with Art From Scrap and Children’s Creative Project to lead a light-based art workshop for all ages. Food and drinks will be available for purchase onsite.

Bandura player Siuzanna Iglidan is an award-winning Ukrainian-American artist. She is a master of the bandura, piano, and orchestra conducting, and recently added opera to her extensive repertoire. In April 2022, she performed alongside John Legend at the 64th annual Grammy Awards.

Meet Roman Baratiak,
By Kerry Methner / VOICE WITH A BANDURA PLAYERPERFORMING IN THE STREET and solidarity sparkling in the air, Roman Baratiak, a loved and respected face at UCSB Arts & Lectures for the last four decades preceding his recent retirement, will be back in front of the mic as emcee for Thursday’s UkraineFest.
The Festival, which runs from 5 to 7:30pm prior to the long awaited Santa Barbara premiere of DakhaBrakha on October 6th, will delight those who are not familiar with Ukrainian culture as well as those who regularly enjoy its arts and texture.
A self-identified first generation Ukrainian-American, Baratiak worked with UCSB Arts & Lectures’ Ashley
Greene to create an authentic cultural introduction.
The Festival will include Siuzanna Iglidan, on bandura, demonstrating “the national musical instrument of Ukraine,” samples of authentic Ukrainian costumes and embroidery from a variety of regions of the country, demonstrations of traditional doll-making, Easter Egg dyeing, and wreath making, as well as information about local organizations such as Direct Relief that are assisting the people of Ukraine in the face of the Russian initiated war.
Baratiak was born in France to Ukrainian parents and moved to the U.S. as a two-year-old, settling into a Ukrainian community in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he spoke Ukrainian as well as English.
“The name of the country kind of translates
to ‘Borderlands’ because it’s always been on the border of empire,” Baratiak explained in a conversation about the festival and state of his parents’ homeland. That borderland location has added flavor to the culture. “It’s where East and West meet. It has all sorts of historical cultural influences, from the ancient Scythians to the Slavs, to the Greeks who had settlements along the Black Sea, and the Vikings who founded Kyiv,” Baratiak

“From the first moment the group starts performing, it’s hard not to get caught up in the magic it weaves… utter brilliance.”

THECROWNING FINALE TO AN EVENING OF UKRAINIAN CULTURE, UCSB Arts & Lectures will present DakhaBrakha at the Granada Theatre at 8pm on Thursday, October 6th in conjunction with 1st Thursday and a UkraineFest from 5 to 7:30pm.
With roots sunk deep in Ukrainian folklore and folksong, as well as theatre, and a good sampling of indie rock, pop, and hip hop, DakhaBrakha is an entrancing high-energy powerhouse that reaches deep and captures attention and then hearts.
Weaving ancient folk melodies into a subversive musical tapestry, DakhaBrakha creates a world of unexpected new music with avant-garde and traditional instrumentation from around the world. From Kyiv, DakhaBrakha has honed an evocative musical approach that “brings a beguiling blend of music from an anguished nation” (The Boston Globe). Prepare yourself for a sonic feast that celebrates the spirit and determination of Ukraine.
DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the
Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by avantgarde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi and given the name that means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. Theater work has left its mark on the band’s performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element.
After experimenting with Ukrainian folk, the band incorporated rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, creating their bright, unique, and unforgettable sound. They strive to open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring them to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world.
Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is at first intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring cultural and artistic liberation. Since the 2022 war began, they’ve also rallied spirits and support for Ukraine around the world.
In March 2010, DakhaBrakha won the prestigious Grand Prix prize named after Sergey Kuriokhin, in the sphere of contemporary art, and confirmed its place in the culture once again. In March 2011, DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and began their ascent in the international music scene. They have since played more than 300 concerts and performances and have taken part in major international festivals throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia,
Asia, Australia, and North America.
The quartet includes: Marko Halanevych, vocals, darbuka, tabla, didgeridoo, accordion, trombone; Iryna Kovalenko, vocals, djembe, bass drums, accordion, percussion, buhay, zhaleika, piano; Olena Tsybulska, vocals, bass drums, percussion, garmoshka (Tsybulska is a specialist at the folklore department of the National University of Ukraine); Nina Garenetska, vocals, cello, bass drum. Vladyslav Troitskyi, director, ideologist, and founder, rounds out the group.
The Natalie Orfalea Foundation & Lou Buglioli, Community Partners for the 2022-2023 UCSB Arts & Lectures season, offer generous support.
Presented in association with Direct Relief, UCSB Department of Music, and UCSB Multicultural Center.

Interview with Roman Baratiak
explained and unpacked some of the complexity of the country.
“All sorts of cultures passed through or settled in Ukraine. It has a kind of multi-ethnic quality. It has the richness and complexity of different cultures and different histories that have influenced that particular region,” he added. “It also borders the Carpathian Mountains, on the western side, and on the other side, are Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania... and all of them have their own unique traditions and histories. So it’s also been very contested, it is a very rich country with the black soil of Ukraine, with the wheat and the sunflowers, and it used to have major energy resources there as well. So whenever conflict started, just like the Nazis did, they headed through Poland and then into Ukraine because they wanted to capture the resources there, in the land.”
All sorts of people came through Ukraine. It has a kind of multi-ethnic quality. It has the beauty of having all sorts of different cultures and different histories that have influenced that particular region
That multi-stranded complexity of people, languages, and cultures soon was reflected in the people living on a cross-roads including significant Jewish and Tartar influences. “It’s has a very rich history of people who struggled for their independence and their freedom for a very long time,” Baratiak noted. Ukraine also has many dark chapters in its history including the horrors of the holocaust and the Holodomar famine.
Ukraine has been a sovereign country for just 31 years -a very short time. “Today’s country was birthed from the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Baratiak explained. “So it
struggles like many of the independent countries that arose from the collapse of the Soviet Union. But imagine what it’s like to have a neighbor, a giant, huge neighbor next door, which is constantly meddling in your affairs, that doesn’t want you to be a successful democracy, doesn’t want you to have a functioning civil society, views you as ‘not a real nation….’ They’ve really struggled to maintain their independence. What they’re wanting is to join the European Union and be accepted as a Western European country. That’s how they view themselves. They want to get away from the colonial power Russia, which doesn’t want to admit that. And so I think Americans need to kind of look at the Ukrainian struggle as people who believe in the values that we have here in the United States: freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom to live your own life as best you see fit. They want to live that way. And they don’t want to fall under the yoke of Russia. And that’s a threat. And frankly, Ukrainians are sacrificing and dying for Western values and they need assistance in order to withstand the repression that they feel is going to be inflicted on them by Russia.”

- Roman BaratiakThat’s the depth and quality of thought that went into presenting UCSB Arts & Lectures UkraineFest. It will be one of the defining moments of the season. It introduces Ukrainians as part of us. Part of Santa Barbara. Part of California. Part of our country, which also claims its immigrant and borderland heritage, and love of freedom.
