Sea Center Experience Opens at SB Museum of Natural History

O CONTINUE ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY DURING THE SEA CENTER’S ONGOING RENOVATIONS, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has opened a Sea Center Experience at its Broder Building. There, visitors will be able to interact with select Sea Center animals, including sea stars, anemones, and swell sharks, as well as hear from Sea Center interpreters.

There will also be a two-spot octopus, and plenty of opportunities to learn about the Santa Barbara Channel’s ecosystem and how to protect it for future generations.

Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center Finishes New Facility

N AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR LOCAL EQUESTRIANS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center has completed building its new facility. Located adjacent to its current property in Santa Barbara at 4420 Calle Real, the center’s horses have already been moved to the new site and are doing well. The center plans to begin offering lessons at the new facility in the coming weeks.

City National Bank and United Way Donate Backpacks and School Supplies

NE HUNDRED FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS received the school supplies they needed this back-to-school season thanks to City National Bank in partnership with United Way of Santa Barbara County. Each student received a free backpack that included the school supplies they needed, such as markers, paper, pencils, and scissors. City National Bank also presented Franklin Elementary School with a $1,000 gift card to Barnes & Noble to purchase new library books.

“Many local students and families from low-resource neighborhoods do not have easy access to necessary school supplies,” said Melinda Cabrera, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships of United Way of Santa Barbara County. “We are so grateful to City National Bank for providing these students with essential tools that will help stay focused on learning.”

Since 2014, City National Bank has partnered with United Way of Santa Barbara County to present their annual Back to School Drive program to area students. As many students and their families cannot afford to purchase new school supplies each fall, these supply drives provide a vital service to the community.

NatureTrack Film Festival Returns to Inspire Viewers’ Appreciation of Nature

ELEBRATE AND LEARN ABOUT OUR MAGNIFICENT PLANET AND ALL WHO CALL IT HOME this fall as the annual NatureTrack Film Festival returns in both an in-person and virtual format.

Transporting viewers from the freezing waters of Antartica to the balmy beaches of Hawai’i, the festival will kick off with a one-day, in-person Pop-Up Film Festival in Los Olivos on Friday, October 16th. Then, community members are invited to enjoy films from the comfort of their homes with a virtual festival from Saturday, October 17th through the 31st.

Founded in 2011, the NatureTrack Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to providing outdoor experiences and education to local students through free field trips.

BBC documentary Antarctica, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, will be screened “The film festival is an extension of NatureTrack in that it furthers our mission of connecting people to the natural world and creating stewards of our natural environment,” said Sue Eisaguirre, founder of NatureTrack and NTFF. “By supporting the film festival, you’re supporting NatureTrack. This support allows us to connect more people to the natural world and allows us to continue to give filed trips to students. It’s human nature to protect something once you understand and enjoy it.”

This year’s Pop-Up Film Festival will be hosted from 9am to 11pm at St. Mark’s in the Valley, Stacy Hall. Featuring a total of 30 films created by talented filmmakers that are ever passionate about the natural world, screenings will be divided up into program blocks, with tickets sold for $10 per block. As the PopUp Festival also coincides with Los Olivos’ annual Day in the Country Festival, NatureTrack will sponsor the morning’s 5K and Kid’s Fun Run, which begin at 8am and 9am.

“We’ve committed to having the film festival in October to coincide with Day in the Country for future years,” said Eisaguirre. “It’s a perfect way to partner with the idyllic rural location and gives film festival enthusiasts a chance to experience more than just film.”

Following this Pop-Up Festival, festival attendees can view over 70 films from 14 different countries with NatureTrack’s virtual festival. This large collection of films includes both feature-length and short films, as well as animated and live films focusing on adventure, biography, conservation, scenic, student, and more.

Over 100,000 Gallons of Oil Spilled Off Southern California Coast

A

PPROXIMATELY 126,000 GALLONS OF CRUDE OIL WERE RELEASED INTO THE OCEAN SURROUNDING HUNTINGTON BEACH as the result of an underwater pipeline leak on Saturday, October 2nd. According to the Associated Press, the leak could have occurred due to a ship anchor accidentally hitting and dragging a portion of the pipeline, causing it to burst.

Consequently, oil has been washing onto the shores of area beaches, resulting in beach closures.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County to support efforts to address the spill, and visited Bolsa Chica State Beach on Tuesday to be briefed on cleanup efforts by state and federal officials.

“We’re coordinating closely on cleanup efforts and to ensure we hold the responsible parties accountable,” stated Governor Newsom on October 5th.

However, as the oil spill further pollutes the habitats of regional marine and onshore wildlife, organizations and activists are speaking out against California’s offshore oil industry. Recent actions have included a gathering of activists in Laguna Beach on October 6th to demand that Governor Newsom stop new permits for fossil fuel drilling.

“This spill – in virtually the same spot as a devastating 1990 spill – is a reminder that petroleum and water are a dangerous mix along California’s precious coast,” said Audubon California Executive Director Sarah Rose in an online statement in the days following the spill. “Our overreliance on oil threatens birds and wildlife, public health, local economies, and outdoor recreation.”

California Bans “Forever Chemicals” in Food Packaging and Paper Straws GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM RECENTLY SIGNED LEGISLATION BANNING PFAS from paperboard, paper, or plant-based food utensils, packaging, and paper straws. Known as “forever chemicals” for not breaking down in the environment and building up in consumers’ bodies, PFAS are a class of toxic chemicals connected to increased risks of cancer, harm to fetal development, and more. Going into effect on January 1st, 2023, the law further requires manufacturers to publish online public lists of PFAS chemicals present in their pans, pots, and other cookware. Manufacturers will also have to label cookware that contain toxic chemicals beginning in 2024.

County Planning Commission Rejects ExxonMobil’s Plans to Restart Offshore Platforms

I

N A PUBLIC HEARING ON SEPTEMBER 29TH, the Santa Barbara County County Planning Commission voted 3-2 to deny ExxonMobil’s proposal to transport oil via tanker trucks along Highway 101 in order to restart three drilling platforms along Santa Barbara’s coastline. A formal vote and recommendations that the County Board of Supervisors deny the project are expected to take place on November 3rd.

“Our community spoke loud and clear against this project, and the commission did the right thing in recommending denial of ExxonMobil’s application...” said Linda Krop, chief counsel of the Environmental Defense Center. “The risk to our climate, the Santa Barbara Channel, and the safety of our communities justifies denial.”

ExxonMobil’s plan proposes as many as 24,800 oil-filled truck trips per year along Highway 101 and Route 166 for seven years or until a new coastal oil pipeline is established. Previously, ExxonMobil’s three offshore platforms by Santa Barbara were shut down following the 2015 oil spill caused by the Plains All American Pipeline.

In a November 2019 poll, the majority of Santa Barbara County voters were opposed to ExxonMobil’s restarting regional offshore drilling platforms, with many citing concern for highway safety. Additional concerns include fear for environmental health if there is an oil spill or trucking accident.

Maison Santa Barbara Invites Locals to Rediscover Vintage Items

RINGING A POP OF BRIGHT, TIMELESS FLAIR to downtown storefronts, Maison Santa Barbara encourages passersby to embrace all things vintage. Recently opened in Paseo Nuevo across from the former Macy’s building, this eclectic store features a fun combination of vintage furniture, household items, clothing, and more. Add to this its commitment to supporting local artists, and Maison Santa Barbara is on its way to becoming a local favorite.

“I feel like a lot of people are a little surprised that it’s in a mall, but then they’re really happy,” said owner Shelley Woods. “It’s not your normal experience, because everything’s at this point oneof-a-kind since it’s vintage and you’re not going to find the exact same thing down the road.”

Originally from Michigan, Woods’ parents and grandparents only had new items around the house while she was growing up.

Yet when Woods bought her first vintage item — a coat from the 1940s — she was immediately enchanted with its superior craftsmanship and quality. Motivated by her passion, she moved to New York City in the 1980s and opened her first vintage clothing store, named Shelley’s.

Eventually, Woods moved to Los Angeles, where she operated two more stores featuring both vintage clothing and furniture over the course of 17 years. When

she arrived in Santa Barbara in 2006, she brought her talent with her, most recently operating Shelly’s Hollywood in Paseo Nuevo across from the sandwich shop Pickles & Swiss in 2019.

Now, Woods has returned to Paseo Nuevo in opening Maison Santa Barbara, utilizing the French word for “house” to indicate the store’s focus on housewares. The name also reflects her admiration for French culture, which derives from her time visiting and living in Paris.

“I feel like so much of Santa Barbara is Spanish, and I figured, well, let’s have a little more French,” she explained.

Before even entering Maison Santa Barbara, visitors can see its plethora of vintage items through its engaging window displays. Inside, silverware, lighting, and other household items adorn the vintage pieces of furniture arranged throughout the room, creating charming, stylish vignettes.

Alongside these home goods are several racks of vintage clothing showcasing children’s fashions to formal dresses and blazers, offering customers the chance to rediscover classic, quality styles. There are even some jewelry displays, including some items made by Woods herself.

Woods discovers many of the items featured in Maison Santa Barbara by exploring estate sales, hand-selecting pieces that stand out to her for their uniqueness, craftsmanship, or condition. However, she also features certain items on consignment, allowing her inventory to regularly change.

Additional items come from Woods’ personal

“collection” of vintage items that she has curated over the course of her career.

Beyond these vintage pieces, the store will support local artists by highlighting a different artist each month for downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday art walks. This month’s featured artist is Michael E. Long, who is best known for his enchanting “dream boxes.”

“I have always liked fine art. My home has a lot of fine art from friends and [pieces] that I’ve collected also,” commented Woods. “Art goes in homes... I think that the fine art looks good with the vintage and antiques too.”

Big Week on the A&L Front

T WAS ALMOST EXACTLY A YEAR AGO – and it seems like another era – that the critical cultural force of UCSB’s Arts & Lectures series resourcefully responded to the music-devastating COVID lockdown by going virtual. Deprived of live venues, A&L launched “House Calls,” streaming live performances from private houses, churches, and Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Center “house of swing,” to the tunes of the Danish String Quartet, Jason Isbell, Rhiannon Giddens, Chris Thile, and others.

Needless to say, streamed, screen-based performances pale compared with real time/ real space/real audience experience, and next week, A&L returns to actual stages – for the first time since spring of 2019 – with a potent, genre-crossing three-pack of concerts.

As if by design, the venues are also strewn across town, from the Granada on Tuesday (the Americana-aligned Wood Brothers), the invitingly woodsy Rockwood on Thursday (classical luminaries the Danish String Quartet), and finally back home on campus, at Campbell Hall on Friday (the stellar Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, a stellar Latin-jazz presenting the provocative immigration-themed Fandango at the Wall).

Each of these artists have graced previous A&L seasons and won fans and friends here and their return engagements this fall signify an even more emotionallycharged resonance, helping audiences to usher in a renewed, rebirthed connection to the importance of live music.

Of particular note, the Danish String Quartet, considered among the world’s top chamber ensembles, has had a strong symbiotic link with A&L for a few years now. Their Rockwood concert is one of two this season (next here at Campbell Hall on April 27, 2022), launching a new project partly commissioned by UCSB, Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Doppelgänger. Just as the Quartet has Orchestra will play at Campbell Hall on previously blended contemporary music October 15th with standard-bearing composer-ofold, Doppelgänger focuses on music of Schubert, with newly-penned, Schubert-inspired works by composers including the great Danish Bent Sorensen, featured, sandwiched by Schubert, at Rockwood.

MUSIC TO OUR EARS: Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny doesn’t mince words concerning his love for the Lobero (a mutual admiration pact). Before his visit last week, with the strikingly fine, soulful new Side-Eye trio, the ever-hirsute Metheny cited the theater as “one of my favorites places to the play in the world. When I start to plan a tour, I try to find a way to get to the Lobero.” Happy that he does.

Metheny’s Lobero history dates back some four decades to a memorable show following his “80/81” album, featuring bassist Charlie Haden, saxists Michael Brecker and Dewey Redman, and drummer Paul Motian. Multiple visits, multiple bands later, Metheny has entrenched himself in the Lobero legacy as one of its greatest returning heroes. When he played here in 2018, he premiered a brand new song, written with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, with a cameo by vocalist pal Tierney Sutton.

With Side-Eye, which had just opened the Monterey Jazz Festival five days prior, Metheny asserts a new group identity, thanks to the powerful presence of the masterful young multi-keyboardist James Francies and lithe drummer Joe Dyson. Francies’ wraparound textural sweep, including various synthesizers, a Hammond B-3 and bass pedals, grand piano, all played with highly musical virtuosity, almost threatened to steal the show at times.

of his percussion instrument-triggered “Orchestrion” side project. At the Lobero, he presented tunes, new and old, and very old – Bright Size Life, the title track of his 1976 ECM Records debut, and now a classic in the songbook. An acoustic medley at show’s end reminded us that, for all of his spidery talents, he is also a master and sweetheart of the ballad writing art.

To-do and hear: If Metheny opened the conversation for post-pandemic jazz concerts in town, local veteran saxist Charles Lloyd follows suit, at the Lobero on October 10th.

Santa Barbara Marches for Reproductive Rights for All

UNDREDS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS stood up for reproductive rights this past Saturday as Santa Barbara marched with cities nationwide to protest Texas’s recent actions to restrict abortions. Led by Women’s March Santa Barbara and the Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund, local leaders and residents spoke, cheered, and carried signs to demonstrate their solidarity in calling for reproductive rights for all.

Well into Thursday’s fun event, Carol Kallman introduced and thanked the Chair, Julie Hinkle, and her committee of four, and announced the winners of the Free Drink raffle. By then I’d had the opportunity to meet some of the newer members of the group, and to reconnect with so many of the ladies I’d missed seeing during the lock-down that impacted us all.

But it seemed that no one wanted to leave in the time allotted, so even though the sun

had long disappeared under the horizon, the ladies were still there!

I’d say that was one terrific party if more than 50 women overstepped the departure hour partying non-stop. And by the way...

I finally figured out (with lots of help) my true identity penned on that name tag slapped between my shoulder blades. Yep – I’m Ellen DeGeneres. So how ‘bout that one? Thanks for including me in one great evening!

Sophie Suh to Serve on Bullying Prevention Advisory Committee SOPHIE SUH has been chosen to serve on the Bullying Prevention Advisory Committee (BPAC) for the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. Currently, Suh serves on the Mental Wellness Center’s Wellness Connection Council, a high school leadership program that educates students on supporting mental health by encouraging them to minimize stigma and promote awareness for mental health in their communities. On the BPAC, Suh will use her knowledge Sophie Suh and experiences to advise and lead how the state responds to the threats young people face as a result of bullying and hate speech. SB Fire Department Continues “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” Campaign

EARN HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY this week as the Santa Barbara City Fire Department continues the “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” between Sunday, October 3rd and Saturday, October 9th. Hosted with the National Fire Protection Association in honor of Fire Prevention Week, the campaign aims to inform community members on how to stay safe from fires through educational events and outreach.

“It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noise-a beeping sound or a chirping sound-you must take action!” said Liliana Encinas, SBFD Public Outreach Coordinator. “Make sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond.

To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.”

Events held as a part of this year’s campaign include interviews streamed via Facebook on October 5th and 7th as well as daily messages being sent out on social media on fire safety topics such as how to prevent kitchen fires, fire escape plans, and more.

The SBFD wants to remind residents that all smoke alarms must be replaced every ten years, and that fire and carbon monoxide alarms should accommodate the needs of everyone living in the home, including those with physical or sensory disabilities. If an alarm lets out a chirp every 30 or 60 seconds, that means the alarm’s batteries need replacing. Any units that chirp even after replacing batteries must be replaced. A set of three loud beeps means smoke or a fire is nearby.

Paradoxically, for all the bohemian Celtic poet persona Morrison has built over the decades, his live shows tend to be run like a tight ship, one song following on another’s heels with virtually no between-song patter. His smart six-piece backup band was impressive and polished, but mostly kept faceless until the last instrumental stretch-out after Morrison left the stage after Gloria. But the spotlight and the saving grace was Morrison’s powerful but controlled, instantly recognizable voice, his gift to the universe, still going strong at age 76.

The sly wink of the title Latest Record Project – the latest in a discography including more than 40 albums by now – reminds us that Morrison can be a humor-lined trickster, along with his reputation as spiritual seeker, crooner, blues belter, and other feathers in his complicated cap.

He can sneakily embed messages in otherwise harmless packages, as with the new song Deadbeat Saturday Night, heard at the Bowl. What Van Morrison sounds like a harmless retro R&B party favor, suitable for a Saturday night, is actually a tirade based on Morrison’s now infamous COVID-deny-er attitude. Morrison has also caught flack for shades of potential anti-Semitism with his new tune They Own the Media.

But at the Bowl, most all perceived sins and quibbles were forgiven by the audience when Morrison would dip into a handful of his most beloved hits, including Wild Night, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, Days Like This, and Into the Mystic. On the jazz-tinged classic Moondance, the band stretched out with solos, including Morrison himself on alto saxophone, which he plays in an angular, wooden style that nonetheless has its own appealing, rough-hewn character.

Morrison’s umbilical connection to early blues, soul, and jazz comes thoroughly clear in his songwriting, but he likes to call on historical touchstones to remind us of his influences, sprinkling his mostly-original Bowl set with covers by legends Bo Diddley, Joe Williams, and blues icon Willie Dixon.

Morrison generally includes some free association improvisational ventures during a live set and on such albums as Astral Weeks, as if channeling some hippie Bard energy source from the cosmos. This year’s model riffed on and floated over a road theme, yet that all-important sense of getting lost in a free extemporaneous spirit was compromised when the band would sneak in with choreographed bursts of the phrase “sitting pretty.”

Strip away the uncomfortable baggage surrounding Morrison’s recent life and work, and the fact remains – as heard at his latest Bowl concert project – that he retains regal status as “Van the man.”

Why Our Record Income Inequality?

HE NEW YORK TIMES’ JIM TANKERSLEY SUMMARIZED PRESIDENT BIDEN’S $3.5 TRILLION SOCIAL SPENDING BILL that “combines major initiatives on the economy, education, social welfare, climate change, and foreign policy, funded in large part by an extensive rewrite of the tax code, which aims to bring in trillions from corporations and the rich.”

Tankersley maintains, “The legislation, which Democrats are trying to pass along party lines and without Republican support, contains the bulk of Mr. Biden’s vision to overhaul the rules of the economy in hopes of reducing inequality and building a more vibrant middle class.”

Why then are conservative economists, such as Harvard Prof Greg Mankiw saying, “Americans should be wary of their plans — not only because of the sizable budgetary cost, but also because of the broader risks to economic prosperity,” in a recent New York Times Op-ed?

What risks is he speaking of when he writes, its policies “also raise larger questions about American values and aspirations, and about what kind of nation we want to be.”

He is repeating conservative’s mantra since the 1980s that higher taxes discourage work, i.e., “Economists disagree about why European nations are less prosperous than the United States. But a leading hypothesis, advanced by Edward Prescott, a Nobel laureate, in 2003, is that Europeans work less than Americans because they face higher taxes to finance a more generous social safety net.

The above FRED graph cited by Nobelwinning economist Paul Krugman debunks that claim, which has never been proven, in any event. Denmark and France have a higher percentage of working aged adults 25 to 54 than the U.S. They are also able to take longer vacations, have higher minimum wages, and have universal health care, as do all other developed countries.

They are living and enjoying a much more generous social safety net because of their higher tax rates, in other words. It seems that Americans don’t have that luxury—at least the 90 percent of wage and salary earners.

Then why so much worry about its recent spike? It’s because Wall Street investors like cheap money, and bond holders’ low inflation,

and they worry that the Federal Reserve might react too soon to such an inflationary surge by tightening credit, when it’s primary goal should be to keep people employed and consumers happy.

Is inflation one of the major problems facing the U.S. economy today? You would think so listening to major commentators and some economists. Zanny Minton Bedoes, Editor in Chief of The Economist, said it was the major problem for sustainable economic growth on Fareed Zakaria’s Sunday TV cast recently, if it is prolonged.

Consumers and businesses also like cheap money to buy homes and things, but they aren’t so worried at present because lots of COVID-19 recovery money is available and in circulation.

Therefore, it’s a little early to be worrying about what I call real inflation—prices rising faster than wages for more than a few months.

And the August CPI showed its first decline in eight months from 5.5 to 5.3 percent August.

Economists have little to say about what causes long term inflation in the U.S. They only have the 1970s as an example. It really peaked during the 1975 and 1980 recessions, largely because the 1973 Arab oil embargo cut off Middle Eastern oil on our very oil dependent, auto-driven economy—before we began switching to renewable energy sources and more energy efficient regulations on homes and businesses.

Labor unions in the 1970s were able to push their wage demands to keep up with skyrocketing prices; oil was more than $100 per barrel, and there were long lines at gas stations— those stations that still had gas to sell. It was a hectic time, but is hardly the problem today, even with fewer workers and disrupted supply chains to meet the surging economic recovery.

The Fed’s Jerome Powell has said they will be vigilant if inflation remains high for too long, but that would mean labor costs, which are approximately two-thirds of product costs, continue to increase as they have since the end of this pandemic-induced recession in April, 2020.

Wages and salaries rose 10.1 percent annually in July 2021, per the latest available data, an uncomfortable level if prolonged. It reached its highest level in the 1970s, per FRED graphs on wages and salaries dating from 1960.

But as the Federal Reserve tightened inflation controls in 1980 by initially raising interest rates to double digits, and labor lost much of its bargaining clout as union membership declined, inflation began its long descent to the two percent average that has pretty much prevailed since the 1990s.

In fact, it has declined so much that the problem since the end of the Great Recession has been how to keep a healthy level of inflation.

This was motivated by the fear of a repeat of Japan’s decades long era of deflation when its economy was shrinking.

So what inflation should we worry about?

Inflation becomes a problem when businesses and government aren’t investing in productive enterprises that would create longer term sources of sustainable economic growth.

The inflation surge we have today is caused by temporary supply disruptions, as was the 1970’s inflation surge created by an overdependence on oil. That’s not the case today with renewable and nuclear energy sources,

though fossil fuels still make up 79 percent of U.S. energy consumption, according to USA Facts.

We need a strong safety net that makes consumers feel safe and not on the verge of bankruptcy with every unexpected downturn, and so they don’t feel as vulnerable to any inflation spikes. We also need investments in infrastructure and future technologies that will insure there won’t be future supply disruptions.

A Mariachi Moment: Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon) at The Granada

C

RUISING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC BARRIERS KEEPING A LID ON THE PERFORMING ARTS, Opera Santa Barbara delivered a mesmerizing production of the Mariachi Opera known as Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. As led by stage director Octavio Cardenas, who knows this material inside-out, the production was emotionally stirring for the Granada audience on Sunday, October 3rd. This production is actually a revival, sung in Spanish and using a Latino cast. Originally commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera in 2010, the opera was revived in 2018 in Houston and New York City.

The original songs were developed by José “Pepe” Martinez, with the story, or “book,” written by Leonard Foglia and a collaboration between the two for the lyrics. It tells of men leaving their Mexican villages of origin to work in the U.S.A. for better wages, leaving their families behind and alone, to fend for themselves.

A tragic tale of migration welled underneath this dramatic story of re-emergence, combined with themes of metamorphosis and reconciliation, with a joyous heartbeat offered at the concluding reunion of family members torn apart by difficult circumstances. The death of a pregnant matriarch even echoed, character arc-wise, Wagner’s Die Walküre in Sieglinde’s flight while pregnant in the forest of Act III. There is disruption, death, and mystery, leading to a cathartic result by the end, in an almost short-hand way.

Butterflies and their annual migrations were used as an allegorical device and even illustrated onstage by the production designers. The element of this mariachi-opera tale that lifts the

drama is the kinship to the natural world, and the poetic allusions to the butterfly migrations, which, in contemporary times, is actually disturbed by the disruptions of climate change.

There is little justice in the world, however, the bond of families, according to this work, is transformative on a human scale, and this simple note is the powerful theme found within this multi-hued production.

At times, the Mariachi music was upbeat, contrasting with the dark tale of lost souls in the desert tracks of the Mexican migrant journeys, and performed by a key group in the current Mariachi orbit, Mariachi Los Camperos, a distinguished and Grammy award-winning and nominated ensemble that helps to keep Mariachi traditions relevant. The music director of the group, “Chuy” Guzman, joined the other Mariachi musicians onstage, and a direct line of volume and sound was unleashed in all its exuberant glory directly to the house.

The distinguished conductor-composer David Hanlon led the musical charge, and the stage was gilded by the authentic ensemble dances from the Grupo de Danza Folklorico Quetzalcoatl, as choreographed by the director Francisco Espinosa. The dancers and their choices functioned as a kind of commenting chorus, accentuating the drama within and showing off a multitude of artistic disciplines.

An exceptional cast was gathered, and the all-Latino cast was graced by the whole ensemble. Bernardo Bermudez played the father beset by irrepressible memories. Bermudez was last seen in OSB’s pre-pandemic production of Il Postino. He was joined by other members of a distinguished cast including Daniel Montenegro and Efraín Solís, both authoritative singers and superlative actors. Both reprised their roles

from previous editions of Cruzar, playing the brothers, the Mexican son Rafael, and the USAborn son Mark. Both offered weighty charisma that help bridge the dramatic gap in this shortduration opera, and you could actually feel the conflicts and an eventual credible bond between the two. Jessica Gonzalez-Rodriguez played and sang the strong mother figure, the ghostly but ever-present Renata. Raphaella Medina compellingly played the character of Diana, the granddaughter, and the main instigator of the reunification between fathers and sons, and brothers to brothers. The other accomplished singers provided a solid grounding for the story and included Kelly Guerra as the Mexican village-based Lupita, Sergio Gonzalez as Chuco, the trusty pal, and Luvi Avendana as the profitseeking human migrant smuggler.

The sets and lighting collaborators were Brandon Baruch and Adam Crinson, producing emotional colorations behind the Mariachi musicians with colors and moonlit atmospheres projected onto a trapezoid screen at the far

back of the stage. This provided the emotional backdrop that was a key element in the rapidpaced storyline and had just the right touch. The furnishings were mostly simple leather-bound seats or an empty foreground of the stage. At every moment, the Mariachi musicians were silhouetted between the lip of the stage and the backdrops, which created a delicately beautiful composition. Credit should be given to the director Octavio Cardenas for his approach to the minimalist atmosphere never stealing the spotlight from the drama.

After the opera’s conclusion, the audience was treated to a multi-song epilogue performance from the outstanding Mariachi Los Camperos. In keeping with the rich traditions of the music, all the musicians participated as singers or engaged in virtuoso moments, delighting the audience with the diversity of and breadth of performing arts for Santa Barbara.

And again, the company effectively mounted another example of high-caliber programming.

The Sunday matinee performance was enthralling for the audience with enthused applause for the cast, conductor, Mariachis, and production team.
