Foodbank of Santa Barbara County to Host Virtual Empty Bowls 2020

OMING TOGETHER OVER A BOWL OF SOUP to raise money toward the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s efforts in support of food security has become an annual tradition. This year it will be again, only with a little different format due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Empty Bowls 2020 will be hosted as a virtual celebration from November 14th to 23rd, and will feature opportunities for donations, sharing, and community support. “It’s sad that we can’t be together to savor the undeniable love that permeates the inperson events... But we are happy to offer opportunities for everyone to participate in keeping the spirit strong under this year’s unusual circumstances, to support local people who are facing hunger and the restaurants that usually donate soup,” shared Foodbank CEO Erik Talkin. The Empty Bowls 2020 celebration will begin with a chance for community members to donate food items to the Foodbank. The “Fill the Foodbank! Drive-thru Food Drive” will take place on Saturday, November 14th from 10am to 2pm at two locations: the Santa Barbara Foodbank warehouse at 4554 Hollister Ave. (adjacent to the Ben Page Youth Center) and in Santa Maria at 1303 S. Bradley Ave. (in the Trader Joe’s parking lot). Most needed items include nut butters, canned pasta sauce, pasta, rice, beans, whole grain and low sugar cereals, and canned protein. Fresh or frozen chickens and turkeys can also be dropped off toward the Foodbank’s 2020 Turkey Drive. Individuals will also have the chance to make online donations to support the Foodbank, which will be doubled by corporate, individual, and philanthropic sponsors. Participants will also have the chance to purchase from fifty handcrafted, artist bowls as a donation. The Foodbank also encourages participants to support local restaurants that have donated soup to past Empty Bowls events. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these small businesses have suffered and continue to face great economic hardship. Accordingly, the Foodbank encourages patrons to safely offer their support through actions like ordering takeout and purchasing gift cards. The Foodbank further asks those posting their Empty Bowls 2020 memories on social https://foodbanksbc.org media to use the hashtag #EmptyBowls2020.

LaunchPoint EPS Flies Goleta Into the Future RONES DELIVERING PACKAGES AND FLYING CARS may sound like science fiction for many, but they’re just part of another day’s work at LaunchPoint EPS. Born out of Goleta-based company LaunchPoint Technologies, new aerospace firm LaunchPoint EPS has made it their mission to develop cutting-edge electric motors and controllers for electric-powered flight vehicles. “Essentially, LaunchPoint EPS was spun out of LaunchPoint Technologies with all the technology, all the people, all the buildings, furniture, and computers just to focus on selling the electric motors for this hybrid electric flight,” said Robert Reali, the CEO of LaunchPoint EPS. For 28 years, LaunchPoint Technologies was a leading engineering think tank in Goleta. Predominantly focused on designing technologies for government and some private contracts, it began developing motors for hybrid electric flight eleven years ago. These motors are key for vehicles that take off and land vertically, such as drones. Therefore, they are essential for companies entering the urban air mobility industry, which focuses on flying vehicles efficiently and safely over populated areas. As LaunchPoint Technologies received more calls for their electric motors, they refocused their business to become LaunchPoint EPS, which stands for “electric propulsion solution.” “Prior to the spin out to the new company, we were 75 percent consulting, 25 percent product,” said Reali. “And in 180 days we flipped that to 75 percent product to 25 percent innovation contracts, all related to our electric motors and controllers.” Reali began building his passion for technology and business while attending University of California, Santa Barbara, where he helped start a software company. His career has most recently included 15 years with Santa Barbara startup TrueVision, where he was Chief Operations Officer. With Reali’s guidance, TrueVision went from four employees to a successful business that was ultimately acquired in part by Alcon last year.

Robert Reali (Chief Executive Officer); Brian Clark (Engineering Director); Brad Paden (Chief Scientist); Chris Grieco (VP of Business Development & Sales); Dave Paden (VP of Manufacturing); and Mike Ricci (Chief Technology Officer)
Today, Reali enjoys not only utilizing his experience to ensure LaunchPoint EPS becomes a thriving venture, but also being able to work alongside such innovative minds. “I grew up watching The Jetsons; we were promised flying cars,” shared Reali. “And here I’m looking at a company that is part of the solution, to be a major supplier to this industry, and it’s just cool...being able to participate in flying cars or drones in aerospace is incredibly exciting, and around Santa Barbara there are so many brilliant engineers and so many good ideas, it gets me excited.” Currently, LaunchPoint EPS is close to seeing five projects fly. Originally started by LaunchPoint Technologies, three of these projects involve drones that will be used for surveillance and inspection needs. The remaining two will actually go into flying car prototypes. “We’re the only game in town for a certain type of profile of motors, which people are really needing for urban air mobility,” Reali explained. He further elaborated that LaunchPoint EPS is unique for its special MAAP software tool, which stands for “modeling
advanced aircraft propulsion.” Developed by LaunchPoint Technologies with contributions from both Hyundai Korea and Uber, this software advises aerospace engineers on what kind of propulsion system they will need for their proposed vehicle. The software makes its recommendations based on thousands of variables, including flight temperatures, proximity to water, and back-up fuel. Ultimately, this saves customers money and time in building successful prototypes. Going forward, LaunchPoint EPS is working to expand its team, having gone from 12 to 20 employees since June with more positions currently open. LaunchPoint EPS also intends to become an active member in the larger community. “It’s very important to me to build community, first among our company and all the new people that are getting to know me from LaunchPoint plus the new hires, to build a corporate culture that is interested in giving back to the community,” said Reali. For more info on LaunchPoint EPS, visit www.launchpnt.com. LaunchPoint EPS is located at 5735 Hollister Ave., Suite B, in Goleta.

Sales Tax Results for the City of Santa Barbara
T
HE CITY OF SANTA BARBARA received $4.84 million in sales tax revenue during the quarter ended June 30, 2020, which is 15 percent below the same quarter last year. This is largely because of the reduced economic activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related response, which has affected nearly all economic sectors in the economy. In addition, the State of California provided relief to many small businesses by extending the 3rd quarter deadline to file sales tax returns from April until July, and allowing some small businesses to spread those payments over the ensuing twelve months. The underlying economic activity locally is similar to economic activity nationally: a significant contraction due to the pandemic and response, but with signs of recovery underway, and full recovery likely to take several years. As the second largest General Fund revenue, the sales tax finished the fiscal year 2020 at $21.2 million, which was below the sales tax budget of $23.8 million.

Global Sky Partners Listed in 2021’s Top 100 Most Innovative Projects
G
LOBAL SKY PARTNERS HAS BEEN ENCOURAGING STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AROUND THE WORLD to turn their eyes skyward since 2017. Now, this Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) flagship education program takes its own place among the stars, having been named one of the 100 most innovative educational projects for 2021 by the HundrED Foundation. “This accolade is a testament to the dedication of the Global Sky Partners themselves, to the program, and their students,” said Dr. Edward Gomez, LCO’s Education Director and lead of the Global Sky Partner program. “They deserve all the congratulations.” The Global Sky Partners consists of educators and scientists from diverse backgrounds and experiences. All partners work toward running fully-supported education projects and investigations by way of the LCO 0.4m network, and have stellar records in astronomy education. The program receives and reviews proposals from interested organizations from across the globe on an annual basis. This allows the Global Sky Partners to not only reach increasingly diverse and larger groups of individuals, but also to broaden the types of
educational projects they undertake. The HundrED Foundation, a global education nonprofit, has recognized Global Sky Partners’ unique and hard work by listing it among its 100 most innovative educational projects for 2021. This list reviews programs on a global basis and is very competitive, with each program having to be reviewed by more than 140 members of the HundrED Academy before being included on the list. A
S OF LAST WEEK, Earthbound Electric and Granite Construction, Inc. began their conduit installation in downtown Santa Barbara as a part of the FY20B Pavement Maintenance Project. ShelterBox Responds to Super Typhoon Goni
O
N NOVEMBER 1ST, Super Typhoon Goni made landfall in the Philippines. Consisting of 140 mph winds and relentless rainfall, this typhoon is the most powerful to hit the Philippines since 2013. It is also their fifth storm since the middle of October. To help the communities affected by these storms, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Barbara based nonprofit ShelterBox continues to respond and send much-needed aid. “ShelterBox is mobilizing to assist communities affected by Super Typhoon Goni, conducting rapid needs assessments in order to provide immediate relief to displaced families who are now particularly vulnerable to COVID-19,” said Kerri Murray, President of ShelterBox USA. “The ShelterBox Operations’ Philippines warehouse was established precisely for disasters like Typhoon Goni, enabling us to respond in the most effective and efficient ways possible, to ensure the timely deployment of emergency shelter and household items from our in-country warehouse. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure no family is left without shelter in the aftermath of Typhoon Goni and as the country prepares for more impending storms.” According to a statement released by ShelterBox, the first
town to face Super Typhoon Goni has lost 90 percent of its homes. As of last week, there were 17 reported casualties, and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) predicted that between 19 to 31 million individuals could be affected by the typhoon. This devastation is especially serious given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as many people struggle to stay healthy and safe after having lost their homes. Fortunately, due to ShelterBox’s existing presence in the Philippines, the organization is offering aid even amidst the government’s banning the importation of aid supplies due to the pandemic. ShelterBox has been registered in the Philippines as a local NGO since 2017, and has previously responded to 27 disasters in the region. It will continue to distribute emergency shelter materials, solar lights, water containers, and other nonfood items in the coming weeks. Harbor VOICE Harbor History Comes Alive By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE
L
AST WEEKEND’S BLUSTERY SUNDAY, windy with an Alaskan chill, had me (shivering beneath my face mask and light jacket) thinking about our unusual, very strange, and quickly changing weather patterns. Really? What’s up with that? Unseasonable searing heat, freezing arctic chill, and thick, blinding fog. Mother Nature is definitely having her way with us: her unpredictable moods have left its artifacts over the millennium in the darkness of the ocean floor. I wonder how many stories of human endeavors versus Mother Nature’s whims are hidden below the surface? How many fascinating secrets lie silently beneath the currents with a tale to tell? Robert Schwemmer, West Coast Regional Maritime Heritage Coordinator for NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and marine archaeologist extraordinaire, has shed light on the subject and has many a tale to tell. One of the most fascinating is that of the United States Coast Guard Cutter McCulloch that lies in the deep, not far from the Santa Barbara harbor, just off the coast of Point Conception. The ship’s history, what happened, and how it was found, is a captivating tale. As chief archeologist on board the R/V (Research Vessel) Shearwater, Schwemmer and members of the science team, assisted by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV - a mini-submarine to the uninitiated such as myself), discovered the remains of the McCulloch. The first view in October of 2016 completed The McCulloch the story of a proud ship and its tragic ending. The McCulloch was the largest cutter built in 1896 at a cost of $200,000 (a huge chunk of change at the time). The McCulloch going down
The ship was known for its exploits worldwide and was equipped with a steam engine and three masts rigged with sails, a cruising speed of 17 knots, four rapid fire guns, and a torpedo tube. It was famed for its multi-missioned ventures from the Far East to the Suez Camel, battling in the Spanish American War, and patrolling up the California coastline to Alaska. On a densely foggy morning in June of 1917, the SS Governor, a passenger ship, collided with the McCulloch near Point Conception. The McCulloch sank, shrouded in the heavy fog after only 35 minutes. Its crew of 90 was rescued by the Governor, although one seriously injured crew member died. “Standing in the lifeboats with heads bared, the McCulloch’s sailors wept as the cutter, stern in the air, quivered and sank,” the San Francisco Chronicle The helm surviving into the 21st Century reported on June 14, 1917. “The famous old vessel lies on the bottom of the ocean, three miles off Point Conception.” Sighting the remains of the McCulloch, Schwemmer reminisced, “Seeing the flying bridge helm, or steering station of the ship, you’re taken back in time. A man would have stood at that same station 100 years ago, steering through the dense fog off Point Conception, not knowing that the bow of another ship would send the McCulloch to the seafloor within minutes.” Schwemmer’s words brought home that this discovery was more than just a scientific mission. “Talking about the McCulloch and seeing the images is always an emotional experience for me as well as for everyone on board,” noted Schwemmer. “Not only does this discovery highlight an important chapter in U.S. Coast Guard and Navy history, but gives me an opportunity to honor water tender John Johansson, the crew member who died from his injuries.” Epic sagas of archeology and maritime lore always leave me awestruck. And, not only for the power of Mother Nature, but for the tenacity of humananity reaching out through the dimensions of time and space to tell a story. The McCulloch lies where it sank on that fateful morning and is under the protection of the United States government. There are more tales of the deep in Robert Schwemmer anthology. So, stay tuned for the next one. Sigrid Toye volunteers for the Breakwater Flag Project. She is on the board of directors of the Maritime Museum and participates in Yacht Club activities. An educational/behavior therapist, Sigrid holds a Ph.D in clinical psychology. She loves all things creative, including her two grown children who are working artists. Q&A with Corey Pahanish, ED, Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation

By Kerry Methner, PhD / VOICE
ITTING THE GROUND RUNNING as the new executive director of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation a month ago in the midst of the pandemic, Dr. Corey Pahanish hails from Michigan by way of San Diego and a career rich in service to the community. “As the new Executive Director of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, I recognize and embrace the transformational power of the organization’s mission to advocate for families living in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties that have a child with cancer by providing financial, educational and emotional support,” he related. From a family facing ecomonic challenges and the loss of his father at a very early age, Dr. Pahanish is a first-generation college graduate with a Ph.D. and an intense passion for the pursuit of social justice who helped raise millions of dollars for underserved populations. Pahanish answered several questions about his new role and and the experiences he feels will inform his work.
What most attracted you to the work of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation?
Dr. Corey Pahanish: While Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation was vetting me throughout the interview and hiring process, I was also vetting them. What I found compelled me to join this incredible organization. I found an impressive and committed board of directors, chaired by the remarkable leadership of J. Paul Gignac, several advisory boards that demonstrated a significant amount of dedication and a wealth of experience, a staff of some of the most caring, devoted, talented, enthusiastic, and inspiring women and men, some of which were themselves recipients of Teddy Bear services at some point in their lives, an impressive and extensive list of generous donors and volunteers, some of which are parents of a child with cancer who are channeling their grief into purpose, and a financially healthy organization who pride themselves on their transparency. And finally, something that I have rarely spoken publicly about, I found out that my mom had stage 4 cancer during my final interview with Teddy Bear and made a commitment to join the organization shortly thereafter, when I found out she died… And while I am still processing this as it only occurred a few months ago, one thing is for sure, I made the right decision.
Tell us about your work in San Diego:
Pahanish: After nearly 20 years in San Diego’s nonprofit sector, my most recent role was with Bayside Community Center, an organization that provides a variety of services to a low-income neighborhood, including food distribution program that I was nearly a recipient of. A few years prior to becoming Bayside’s Executive Director, I was referred to their food distribution program by a staff member of the University of San Diego, my alma mater that is located in the socioeconomically distressed community of Linda Vista, where Bayside is located. While I did make an appearance at one of Bayside’s monthly food distributions, I was too ashamed to stand in the line that stretched for as far as the eye could see, a line filled with seniors and single mothers. Little did I know, that only a few years later, I would serendipitously become the Executive Director of the Center, a nearly 90 year-old beloved nonprofit with an ambitious mission to empower one of San Diego’s most diverse and socioeconomically distressed neighborhoods, Linda Vista. Within my first few months as executive Corey Pahanish director, it became clear that I inherited a budget that was not rooted in reality, rather, it reflected an existential crisis. In order to keep our doors open and eventually establish financial stability, our small, but mighty team, was required to raise a record amount of funds in a neighborhood that not many people from outside of the neighborhood knew was distressed. Despite almost insurmountable odds, not only did our team raise a significant amount of funds and establish financial stability, we partnered with an educational partner to build a brand new state of the art educational facility and community center at our site by leveraging private and public funds. Finally, I am blessed enough to have built countless meaningful relationships with amazing and inspiring people from the community that I served, people whose selflessness, grit, determination, and resilience, not only represent America at its greatest, but humanity at its greatest. These are the same people who I once was too ashamed to share a food distribution
line with and now am honored to share a relationship with. How do you feel that experience relates to the mission of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation?
Pahanish: I am starting my career with Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, an organization that is financially healthy, with an impressive and committed board of directors and complimentary advisory board. Aside from the nonprofit managerial skills that I learned in my master’s, Ph.D., and various certificate programs, as well as handson practitioner experience, I bring a deep level of empathic and compassionate leadership that was only strengthened through my previous role having led an organization through a variety of distressing and traumatic experiences. This type of leadership is necessary for the success and effectiveness of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, an organization with a mission to advocate for families living in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties that have a child with cancer by providing financial, educational, and emotional support. Courtesy Photo
November 13, 2020
What are your hopes for the organization going forward?
Pahanish: I hope to lead this organization in the way that the families, staff, board, and supporters deserve, which is nothing short of successfully. I hope to inspire current and potential donors to give what is meaningful to them, including endowments, which are arguably more important now than ever, considering these challenging times. I hope to make our staff and board proud of their executive director. And finally, I hope to continue to grow our support for the families of Teddy Bear and to help them heal… How are you enjoying Santa Barbara so far?
Pahanish: I, love, Santa Barbara… While I am coming here after having spent nearly 20 years in San Diego, I was born and raised in the Midwest, a proud Michigander to be more specific. And to me, Santa Barbara is as if San Diego and Michigan had a baby, it has a So Cal beachy feel with a small town spirit, filled with such caring, hospitable, and accommodating people. So, yeah, I love it. I cannot wait to explore it more.

REAM FOUNDATION ROLLED WITH THE TIMES when it wasn’t possible to host their traditional celebration by pivoting to host “Magical Moments” an online celebration and fundraiser. Magical Moments features an online auction, the chance to buy Dream Foundation swag, and an advance screening of director Peter Sasowsky’s Language of Dreams on Sunday, November 15th. “Magical Moments offers everyone the chance to help make the final Dream of a terminally-ill adult come true,” said Kisa Heyer, Dream Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer. “Though the pandemic has prevented us from holding our usual fall event, it has allowed us to create a celebration that means that whether you are in New York City or here with us in Santa Barbara, you can be part of the magic and bid, buy, make a gift or watch the advanced private screening of ‘Language of Dreams’ together. We are so thrilled that our Ambassadors, Priscilla Presley and Rob Lowe, kindly agreed to lend their voices to the documentary, along with Broadway star Teal Wicks. It’s going to be a very special film. We look forward to sharing the magic of Dreams with everyone and making thousands more Dreams come true in the future.” The Magical Moments online auction features over 30 items, including luxury travel experiences to the Caribbean and Maui. Other items include a work by pop artist Donald Robertson, wellness packages, custom jewelry, and more. Bidding closes online on November 17th. Virtual attendees can also purchase face masks, as well as t-shirts and totes that feature Donald Robertson’s painting Magical Thinking. The online private advance screening of Language of Dreams will screen on November 15th at 5pm PST. This documentary highlights the lasting effects of Dreams, featuring multiple personal accounts from Dream recipients’ families, those who work to grant Dreams, and comments from Dream Foundation Ambassadors. The advanced private screening is free to watch, but individuals must register ahead of time to watch. To learn more or participate in Magical Moments, visit www.magicalmoments2020.org

EconomicVOICE Another Good Employment Report By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE
T
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=xtAe
HE U.S. REGAINED 630,000 JOBS IN OCTOBER and the unemployment rate fell sharply again to 6.9 percent, said the Bureau of Labor Statistics, reflecting a surprising show of strength for the economy even as coronavirus cases rose to record highs. “These improvements in the labor market reflect the continued resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and efforts to contain it,” the BLS said in its press release. “In October, notable job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, and construction. Employment in government declined.” There are still 11 million workers without jobs, of the 22 million jobs lost due to the pandemic shutdown, so it will take much more time to bring the employment picture back to something like what prevailed before the pandemic, and “dark days” for COVID-19 infection rates when the holidays kick in lie, both Drs. Fauci and Birx said in recent days. That means a lot more suffering and deaths this winter and into next year for many, before any vaccine can be widely administered. Private-sector employment rose by a more robust 906,000, but a sharp decline in government employment pulled down the overall total. The number of persons who usually work full time rose
by 1.2 million to 123.6 million, and the number who usually work part time increased by 1.0 million to 26.2 million. The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons increased by 383,000 to 6.7 million in October, after declines totaling 4.6 million over the prior five months. Federal Reserve Chair Powell said after the conclusion of their latest FOMC meeting that more pandemic relief aid is needed to keep economic growth expanding, to no one’s surprise and that the rise in new cases is particularly concerning. It also means much more than relief aid is needed to rebuild the American economy for the future. It took ten years after the Great Recession for the unemployment rate to drop to its prepandemic low. The U.S. counted 107,872 new infections last Wednesday, according to a New York Times tracker, and at least 1,616 Americans died. In the past week, the U.S. has averaged 91,878 cases a day, a 51 percent increase from two weeks ago. The U.S. leads the world in cases with 9.49 million and deaths with 233,777, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, and accounts for more than a fifth of global cases and fatalities. So Powell’s warning of “tragic’ economic risks if another coronavirus aid package isn’t passed by congress seems obvious. “Over time, household insolvencies and business bankruptcies would rise, harming the productive capacity of the economy and holding back wage growth,” Powell said. “By contrast, the risks of overdoing it seem, for now, to be smaller.” And those hurt most by any further delay in passing another relief package that would benefit states as well federal government programs are the essential workers most needed to conquer the pandemic. Employment of those in the bottom rung of the wage distribution scale remains 21 percent below its February level, while it was only four percent lower for workers who receive higher wages. New Police Station Plans to be Discussed November 16th

ONCEPTUAL PLANS FOR THE NEW SANTA BARBARA POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL BE REVEALED at a meeting of the City of Santa Barbara’s Architectural Board of Review on November 16th at 3pm. This meeting will take place virtually, and is open to the public. “Much has happened over this past year with the development of the new Police Station since the City Council selected the Cota Commuter Parking Lot as the preferred site alternative for environmental review,” reads a statement from the City. “As part of the preliminary environmental review the property was thoroughly studied and 30 percent drawings for the Police Station were developed.” According to the City’s notice of a public hearing, the new Police Station is proposed to be three stories and about 65,000 square feet. There will also be a 37.5’ tall parking structure that will cover about 86,000 square feet and contain 244 parking spots. Both the station and parking structure would have a subterranean level. This new site would allow for the consolidation of existing police operations, which are currently spread across four separate locations. If approved, the project will mean the relocation of the MTD bus stop shelter on Cota Street, plaques commemorating the old Lincoln School, and the removal of 30 trees. The project still needs development plan approval by the Planning Commission.

S THE COUNTRY OBSERVED VETERANS DAY ON WEDNESDAY, the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation (PCVF) continued to honor veterans across Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. Through a series of Facebook posts, PCVF shared the photos and stories of local veterans, including Bill Livingston and Jim Patillo. Staff Sergeant Bill Livingston was a member of the United States Army during World War II. His aircraft was shot down over Europe while flying in the Air Corps, and he was taken as a prisoner to a POW camp. Colonel Jim Patillo served for 20 years in the United States Army Air Corps and Air Staff Sergeant Bill Livingston Force. He acted as a pilot in the Colonel Jim Patillo Pacific, India, China, and Marianas. Upon returning to our community, he worked as Santa Barbara District Attorney and Judge. “We are proud to honor our veterans who have sacrificed so much to ensure our freedom this Veterans Day,” said John Blankenship, PCVF Executive Director.

Enhanced New COVID-19 Santa Barbara County Community Data Dashboard
A
NEWLY RELEASED PANDEMIC COMMUNITY DATA DASHBOARD is the result of a countywide public-private partnership to empower residents and leaders with real-time information necessary to reign in COVID-19 and mount effective recovery efforts. The new dashboard builds upon existing metrics released by the County with additional timely, accurate data presented in a way that is easy to navigate and understand, enabling residents to take collective action to address the pandemic. “In order to confront the COVID-19 crisis, Santa Barbara County residents and leaders need timely access to trustworthy data to make data-driven decisions. This public-private partnership brought together key agencies and organizations to meet this critical need by building an open and transparent collaborative data portal that builds upon everyone’s good work to date,” commented Supervisor Gregg Hart, Chair, Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. The dashboard builds upon the current surveillance metrics, status reports, and dashboard provided by County public health officials and reflects the state metrics and interactive data charts for viewers to explore top priority epidemic data (testing, cases, health care capacity) by place, time period, and demography. The dashboard helps tell the local COVID-19 story in a mix of visual and narrative forms to explain why the data is important and any resulting actions based on the metrics. The dashboard, available on the Santa Barbara County Public Health website, is the result of a robust public-private partnership facilitated by LegacyWorks with a wide array of community organizations and agencies, guided by a steering committee made up of public health experts and community leaders. The steering committee’s work is informed by a larger advisory group with broad expertise and perspective. “The dashboard was created with a long-term view in mind,” explained Carl Palmer of LegacyWorks Group. “It serves as a tool to actively engage the community in reducing the spread of COVID19, while at the same time creating a shared platform where we can collectively monitor the evolving nature of the pandemic and its effects on our communities.” The dashboard will draw from and be consistent with County-vetted data, and readily embeddable in the County Public Health Department and regional health care institution websites to augment existing data communication tools and interpretation. The partnership is assessing adding elements in the future, such as forecasting and reporting on health and safety measures. Nuevo Tablero Comunitario de Datos COVID-19 del Condado de Santa Barbara
U
• Joseph Incandela, Ph.D., Vicerrector de Investigación, UC Santa Barbara • Dr. Kurt Ransahoff, CEO, Sansum Clinic • Mike Ridland, Gerente de Proyecto, ESRI’s Living Atlas of the World • Dr. Trees Ritter, Especialista en Enfermedades Infecciosas, Marian Regional Medical Center Socios Contribuyentes: Cottage Health ; Family Service Agency; County of Santa Barbara Public Health Department; County of Santa Barbara Department of Social Services; County of Santa Barbara Department of Behavioral Wellness; County of Santa Barbara Housing and Community Development Division; Food Bank of Santa Barbara County; Santa Barbara Foundation; Santa Barbara County Education Office; UC Santa Barbara Economic Forecast Project; y CalPoly San Luis Obispo, Department of Social Sciences

A Tribute to Those Lost...

The annual SANTA BARBARA SAND BERM PROJECT is underway. First, work will take place on the east side of Stearns Wharf. Then the berm will be built in front of the Yacht Cub. These giant sand walls are essential protection for our waterfront each winter. Heavy equipment arrived at dawn Wednesday to begin digging in and piling up the sand.
Adding more inside seating for Santa Barbara County restaurants WILL HAVE TO WAIT, as COVID numbers stay too high. A new data dashboard is also out to follow the trends. See page 20 for details.
Stopping The Leaks STOPPING THE LEAKS - that huge barge of Summerland is capping two notoriously leaky wells dating back over 100 years. Funding from the state pays for the capping of these rusty wells that pollute the waters. Heal the Ocean and State Senator Hannah- Beth Jackson pushed hard for this funding and to get state officials to take this seriously, fund it, and fix it – not just here, but other locations in California. Summerland has a picture perfect beach and this will make the biggest difference in decades. https://keyt.com/news/environment/2020/11/11/notoriously-leaky-wells-getting-sealed-once-again-offsummerland/?fbclid=IwAR1pYRxs_uDdUF5aVEfa-YC5LtPmOdG2cUkUg1i4kG7mquZi4wuHuYjOb3E

They tried out a COVID-safe music site, but the plug was pulled on this effort at the CROOKED PATH in Los Olivos. When will we be able to see live music, safely again? RINGING CHILDREN AND ARCHITECTS TOGETHER TO SKETCH IMPORTANT SANTA BARBARA BUILDINGS, Kids Draw Architecture is a celebration of Santa Barbara, Kids, and architecture. Despite the pandemic, the drawing sessions took place around the city again this year and the culmination of the creative effort (spearheaded by The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara) can be seen, appreciated and purchased in the form of the annual sale of Kids Draw Architecture calendars. This activity helps kids learn about architecture and the skill of drawing while working alongside volunteer professional mentors. By Caleb Gupta, age 11 In this unique year of the COVID-19 pandemic, KDA created a special Sketch From Home opportunity to keep kids drawing and working on their drawing skills. The delightful drawings in the 2021 calendar show new images of the built environment with creativity and joy. The calendars are available now at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara (AFSB) Acheson House. They are also available at Chaucer’s Book Store, Tecolote Book Shop, The Book Den, The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, and SB Gift Baskets. Calendars are $10 each or ten for $90. Pianos on State: Throughout November the tinkle of keyboards of Pianos on State will rely on locals as the famously on-the-street program moves virtual. Instead, Pianos on State is inviting the community to create videos of themselves playing piano-based music from their homes (or wherever else they can safely), and speak to all of us about what music means to you during these times. Videos can be posted to the Pianos on State Facebook page and personal social media accounts, making sure to tag @pianosonstate and using the hashtags #pianosonstate2020 and #arthelps.

And I hope that you, my smart, and beautiful followers, readers, and friends, do remember the fabulous exhibition Chagall and Music at LACMA in 2017. I became obsessed and visited it many times, enjoying full-scale re-creations of his set designs for ballets and operas – and all of that with a musical score filling the gallery space. Take a look at this animation produced by Russian filmmakers, joyfully playing with and twisting the most famous images by Chagall. I cannot think of a better medicine for our eyes and ears than this intoxicating short film. Enjoy it! Watch the animation film at

ES, WE ARE GOING THROUGH A TUMULTUOUS EXPERIENCE DURING THIS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, but, we will survive these dramatic, highly theatrical ups and downs. And while we are learning about our strengths and weaknesses, good artists of the past and present give us a chance to see ourselves in their mirrors. Going to Nicodim Gallery to see the solo exhibition of South African artist Georgina Gratrix (b. 1982), I didn’t expect to admire and giggle at her heavy impasto paintings, that grabbed my Installation shot at the exhibition, Georgina Gratrix: The Pleasure is Mine attention with their bursting energy. None of the people the artist chose to portray look attractive or smart, instead they’re caricatures of themselves. They come across as cheeky, playful, and surprisingly charming portraits of possibly Georgina Gratrix’s friends and family?! This is the first solo show in the United States of this Mexican born artist, who grew up in South Africa. The gallery’s press release says, “Gratrix’s... delights in the awkward, charming clumsiness of Philip Reading, 1963 by March Avery, Ruth In A Sling Chair, 1985 by attempting to mind one’s manners in the Blum & Poe March Avery, Blum & Poe present day, when manners are all but obsolete.” The upcoming solo exhibition of New York based artist March Avery (b. 1932) at Blum & Poe made me look at her paintings on my computer and wonder if these dreamy, figurative compositions are made today, yesterday, or decades ago... Actually, this exhibition The Reunion, 2020 by Georgina Gratrix covers four decades of March Avery’s career. I am trying to find the best way to describe a very particular color palette preferred by the artist. Pastel? Dreamy? Seductive? “Her paintings focus on domestic scenes, portraits of friends and family, still lifes, and landscapes all dear to the artist.” Looking at these portraits of people resting in chairs, or lounging on the couch, I am dreaming about a time we can find ourselves in a similar, peaceful state of mind... The upcoming exhibition of internationally acclaimed American photographer Peter Hujar (1934-1987) at Marc Selywn Fine Art, with its wide range of portraits, landscapes, and nudes, reminds us how much he was admired by great cultural figures, including Gary Schneider in Contortion, 1979/2020 Richard Avedon and Nan Goldin, Diane Vreeland, and Susan by Peter Hujar Sontag. One particular image chosen to advertise this exhibition, shows a painfully contorted, naked body. It evokes a sense of sympathy along with a touch of horror. Looking at this photo shot almost 40 years ago, makes me think about the relics of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. In a strange way, this photo also mirrors political contortions we continue to experience these days... Installation shot at the exhibition, Georgina Gratrix: The Pleasure is Mine https://tinyurl.com/y69k58fp Now my friends, let’s switch gears and reconnect with two great artists of the past. With an introduction by Gloria Williams Sander, Curator at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, we are invited to enjoy the Italian film Maverick Modigliani - a portrayal of famous Italian Jewish painter, scandalous genius, and indisputable master of 20th-century art. If you don’t know that most of his portraits were made almost a hundred years ago, you would believe Maverick Modigliani - Trailer. they were done today. Watch the trailer at Premieres November 13th-15th, 2020.

SBCC Music’s Big Band Becomes First College to Perform a Live, Virtual Ensemble Concert
T
HE INTERNET IS ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC thanks to Santa Barbara City College’s very own Lunch Break Big Band. With their October 23rd performance, this group of dedicated students became the first school band to perform a virtual, large ensemble concert with each musician performing live and synchronously. Truly a feat of technology and talent, this performance is a testament to the SBCC’s Music Department and its students. “Until now, it was impossible for musicians to play together over the internet,” explained a statement released by SBCC. “The structure of the World Wide Web, based on reliability rather than instantaneous speed, causes audio and video to be slightly outof-synch. Even a half-second delay in sound makes it impossible for musicians to play together with rhythmic precision.” The SBCC Music Department began brainstorming on how to conduct a live, virtual concert in March. Eventually, professors James Watson and Jim Mooy found Jamulus, a German software made for musicians working together virtually. However, while the software does bring musicians together, ensuring perfect synchronization requires precise technology and special audio equipment. Fortunately, SBCC Business Services helped secure CARES Act funding for the Music Department that provided participating students with the necessary equipment. After weeks of rehearsals and the students’ hard work, the Lunch Break Big Band successfully hosted its October 23rd performance, making them the first academic institution to accomplish a live, virtual performance with more than 20 members. Going forward, SBCC Music intends to participate in the Jamulus World Jam event. The department is also working toward gaining funding for an improved fiber optic connection that will provide students with faster internet speeds.

Westmont College Wins Award for New Website
A
FTER FIVE YEARS OF HARD WORK AND REDESIGNS, Westmont College’s new website is drawing attention. As of this fall, it has won the Web Marketing Association’s 2020 WebAward for Outstanding Achievement in Best Faith-Based Website. “We embarked on a journey to create a finished product that effectively communicates what is so special about Westmont,” said Vice President for Advancement and Chief Information Officer Reed Sheard. “These redesigned webpages reflect elements of the updated style that will serve the college well into the future. Over the last few years, we’ve received valuable data that has informed and helped us perfect the final work of a completely revamped Westmont website.” The redesign began in 2015, with the creation of new messaging, visual style, new brand guidelines, and communication flows. In 2016, this expanded into a better homepage and admissions site that works just as well whether you access them via a computer or phone. From there, the website as a whole underwent dramatic improvements, including changing its content management system to Drupal. Now in 2020, the completed product has not only made navigating the site easier and more attractive, but has gained national recognition. “We’ve increased our branding efforts and reach through content features that provide high touch and engagement,” said Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing, and Communications Irene Neller. We’ve been training faculty and staff on the new technology, offering assistance to update their appropriate webpages so they’re relevant and appealing. We track and measure all web activity and user navigation so we can maximize our opportunity for a more robust, comprehensive and user-friendly westmont.edu. It’s all about experiencing the Westmont story through your device of choice online.”
