Mariachi Master Jóse Hernández and his Sol De México has earned eight Latin Grammy nominations and have a biography and history as rich and colorful as Mariachi music itself.

“No one else on the Mariachi music scene navigates the warm waters of classical, pop, jazz, swing, and Broadway tunes with such grace... To listeners weaned on traditional Mariachi sounds, Jose’s organic, irreverent renditions are becoming instant classics,” according to reviewers and his peers.

On their new album, Legends of My Land/Leyandas de mi Pueblo (2018 Serenata Records), Sol pays a spectacular tribute to mariachi music in the golden era of Mexican cinema. The recording earned a Best Ranchero/

Under the leadership of Hernández, Mariachi Sol de Mexico are the only Mariachi in the world that perform on the classical music circuit (in addition to concerts at Performing Arts Centers, casinos, and festivals). They have performed with the New Mexico, Denver, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Inland Empire Symphony Orchestras as well as with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2007, the group toured worldwide with Luis Miguel. They also perform regularly at various Mariachi festivals throughout the country and in California, which is their home base.

Hernández has also collaborated with popular musicians and bands across genres, including Bryan Adams and Green Day.

“It’s all about music, that’s our common language,” said Hernández in an interview with The Recording Academy.

MB&T Awards $2 Million In Dividends® To Non-Profits

HONORING A

HOLIDAY TRADITION

OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, Montecito Bank & Trust held a luncheon on Monday and awarded local non profits $2 million instead of their traditional $1 million to celebrate 20 years of the unique giving program.

The Community Dividends tradition started when the Bank’s founder Michael Towbes invited 100 nonprofits to lunch and surprised each organization with a $10,000 check. The Bank has carried that tradition forward each year since, giving away $1 million every November to hundreds of nonprofits across the Central Coast. Through this unique giving program, the Bank has now granted more than $21 million to local Santa Barbara and Ventura County nonprofit organizations.

Welcoming over 300 guests, including 200 nonprofit leaders from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, Janet Garufis Chairman & CEO of Montecito Bank & Trust commented, “On this Monday before Thanksgiving, we are here to celebrate you and the service and dedication of all 200 non-profit organizations represented here today. You advocate and care for our most vulnerable, feed the hungry, heal the sick and comfort the lonely, house the homeless, educate and inspire our children, and lift our spirits with music and arts that remind us of the beauty around us. You enhance the quality of life for all segments of our society. Thank you!”

Also, expressing gratitude for Mr. Towbes’s vision and reaffirming the Bank’s commitment to continuing his legacy of corporate philanthropy by reinvesting a portion of the Bank’s profits back into the community, Garufis went on to note, “Mike always promised me that

if the Bank grew, so could our giving. And I promised him we would grow, so that we could give more when the community needed us. In celebration of Mike’s vision and extraordinary philanthropic commitment to our communities, our Board of Directors has approved doubling this year’s Community Dividend investment to $2 million! That’s $21 million in 20 years.”

The additional $1 million also allowed the Bank to expand the Michael Towbes Community Impact Dividend award, introduced in 2019 to make a meaningful impact by providing an annual dividend up to $100,000 to one or more nonprofit organizations that deliver critical and sustainable services to a large number of the most vulnerable people in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. This year five organizations were awarded $100,000 each. Anne Towbes joined Janet Garufis on stage and together they recognized each of the five recipients with a check.

This year’s recipients were:

• CommUnify: to support its Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program that focuses on long-term family stabilization, including intensive case management and coaching for up to one year, as well as economic empowerment education and targeted payment assistance.

• Pacific Pride Foundation: to support its LGBTQ+ Language Justice Project, an innovative initiative with the ambitious goal of becoming a bilingual organization by 2024. PPF will expand and improve programs and services to include populations that are often underinvested in and overlooked.

• Peoples’ Self-Help Housing Corporation: to support its Camino Scholars Education Program which provides education services including school tutoring and college advising support. Educators maintain a 1:1 student-to-instructor ratio and work with students to set goals, identify resources needed and implement strategies for success.

• Santa Barbara Street Medicine / Doctors Without Walls: to support its Wrap Around Care Program that offers medical and behavioral health services so individuals can transition off the streets and into housing.

LEAPING INTO THE HEART OF THE FUNK ZONE’S ECLECTIC EATERY

SCENE, Tyger Tyger has returned in full force with a new menu of plant-focused cuisine infused with a distinctive blend of California and southeast Asian flavors.

Originally launched in 2018 by Acme Hospitality, the restaurant closed amidst the early months of the pandemic. Now, with a new duo of creative chefs at the helm, Tyger Tyger has reemerged as a local hotspot for casual, healthy

dishes that boast bold, innovative flavors.

“I’ve created a menu of dishes I want to eat,” shared Consulting Chef Jasmine Shimoda. “And also addressing things that are missing in Santa Barbara. There’s kind of a disparity between old-school cuisine, drinking food, and then health food... It just seems like such a separation to me. There’s nowhere that I could think of in Santa Barbara where there’s just delicious, crave-able healthy food...”

She added that she wanted people to enjoy food that is

healthy at its core, but doesn’t taste like traditional health foods.

Both Shimoda and Tyger Tyger’s executive chef, Trevor Laymance, have local roots and share a passion for plant-focused cooking. Raised in Santa Barbara, Shimoda trained as a chef in New York before opening a Los Angeles vegan restaurant named Jewel. Given this background, and her local experience working at Loquita, Acme Hospitality approached Shimoda about the prospects of reopening Tyger Tyger with a new focus on vegan and vegetarian options.

Laymance, who worked with Shimoda at both Jewel and Loquita, grew up in Ventura and Ojai with a family that prioritized healthy foods. A classically French-trained chef, Laymance is passionate about farm-to-table practices. Accordingly, Tyger Tyger sources its ingredients from regional farmers.

“We are the promoters of what they grow and educating people on what they have,” said Laymance. “A lot of times you just go buy the same things, your carrots, apples, tomatoes — but there’s just so much more out there. When we put it in a dish, that educates them... It expands people’s diets.”

Named for William Blake’s poem of the same title, Tyger Tyger’s intimate location certainly “burns bright.”

Housed in the same location as Dart Coffee on East Yanonali Street, customers can enjoy a vibrant, paper lantern-adorned interior or walk across the street to eat in the garden adjacent to the Funk Zone’s famous Green House. Soon, garden tables will feature QR codes so customers can order and wait for their meals while relaxing outside. In keeping with Tyger Tyger’s green focus, meals are packaged in compostable containers.

Spanning breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, Tyger Tyger’s menu infuses flavors from Thailand, Vietnam, India, and beyond into dishes with California vibes. While dishes are largely vegan and vegetarian, the menu remains what Shimoda calls “flexitarian,” allowing for the inclusion of traditional proteins.

Savory meals include crispy Japanese sweet potatoes, chicken khao soi, a fried yuba sandwich, and the Tyger Bowl, incorporating coconut rice and black pepper tofu with shaved veggies. There are also lighter options, such as a tea leaf noodle salad, and sweet treats including coconut berry parfait and vegan soft serve.

Customers can also order breakfast items, such as breakfast tacos and sandwiches, late into the day, adding to Tyger Tyger’s casual, flexible atmosphere.

IT ISN’T OFTEN a community has an opportunity to learn about itself through art. Santa Barbara Symphony Music and Artistic Director Nir Kabaretti’s carefully crafted program last weekend at the Granada Theatre included a world premiere by Santa Barbara composer Cody Westheimer, his Wisdom of the Water, Earth, Sky; Robert Schumann’s love letter to his wife Clara, the Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by Pianist Alessio Bax; a gorgeous realization of Jean Sibelius’ Valse Triste; and a splendidly clean and nuanced performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

The world premiere of Santa Barbara composer Cody Westheimer’s musical, visual, and narrative homage to the Chumash Nation opened Saturday’s concert. A onemovement work for orchestra and Chumash language narratorsfor this performance, Ernestine YgnacioDeSoto and Marianne Parra - enhanced by Westheimer’s stunning nature videography, Wisdom of the Water, Earth, Sky is not just wonderfully accessible musically and visually,

but historically and culturally. Westheimer’s love-letter to humanity via the cultural heritage and animist folklore of California’s Central Coast Chumash people offered Saturday’s audience a timely message from first inhabitants about balance and sharing.

The Coplandesque timbre and calming temperament of the opening bars of Wisdom immediately established a comfortingly halcyon musical vibe for the listener that gently belied an otherwise complicated and ever morphing compositional structure. Westheimer describes musically, the Chumash story of the origin of dolphinsChumash who fell into the sea during the rainbow crossing from the Channel Islands to the mainland millennia ago and were saved from death by being transformed into dolphins.

The beauty of the sound of the Chumash language in the dolphin story and other ancient parables about deer (night marauders) and squirrels (saving, sharing, sacrificing), abetted Westheimer’s charming musical imagination commiserate with each story told. Finally, in grand strokes of triumphant, wonderfully orchestrated soundscape and stunning videography, the story of the Red Tail Hawk, who sees the world, its potential and failings, from a vantage beyond human conception, marked the thrilling emotional and musical denouement of the work. An epilogue, with sweeping Westheimerguided drone footage of the natural wonders of this part of the world, accompanied by broad passages of orchestral grandeur and feel-good musical apotheosis, brought the world

premiere of Wisdom of the Water, Earth, Sky to a knot-in-your-throat conclusion, and the house to its feet.

One of Santa Barbara’s favorite guest artists, pianist Alessio Bax, gave his fans here a performance of the Schumann concerto that was rich in detail, articulate clarity, and stoic power reminiscent of Arthur Rubenstein; note after note ringing clear and true – a stunning display of Bax’s physical as well as interpretive mastery of both the instrument and Schumann’s mind.

for concerto and chamber music appearances over many years, but Saturday’s performance of Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 (1845) was his first with the Santa Barbara Symphony and conductor Nir Kabaretti. From the first notes of the dramatic first movement, Allegro affettuoso, and with nary a flinch or shoulder crunch, Bax set a definitive and thrilling mantra for all to hear – every note of Schumann’s monstrously complicated masterpiece would be heard with clarity. The result was a jaw-dropping performance that not only sparkled with action and energy, but revealed passage work usually lost in the balancing game between soloist and orchestra.

Bax’s demeanor and electrifying sound presence – clean, articulate, balanced, resolute – reminded this listener of Arthur Rubenstein; gentlemanly, almost stoic posture, pristine articulation with a muscular edge that note for note packed a satisfying wallop, especially in the powerful cadenza at the end of the first movement. Bax’s role as playful lover in the second movement, IntermezzoAndantino grazioso, was appropriately lighthearted, elastic, and coy, while the last movement, Allegro vivace, found Bax, Kabaretti, and the orchestra in feisty form, willing collaborators and at a stylish clip, in the nuptial celebration that is the emotional point and practical purpose of the work.

Jean Sibelius’ 1903 incidental music for his brother-in-law’s rather morbid play, Kuolema (Death) included Valse Triste (Sad Waltz), about a dying woman dancing with the ghosts of her past, before dying herself. Conducting from memory, as throughout most of the program, maestro Kabaretti gave his Saturday night audience a gorgeous and moving interpretation of Valse Triste, followed by a crackerjack virtuoso performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Invites Community to Give to Operation Holiday Cheer

WITH PLANS TO SERVE OVER 125 FAMILIES, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria is partnering with Cox Communications to host its third annual Operation Holiday Cheer initiative. Launched amidst the pandemic, the program provides gifts to local girls and their families recovering from economic hardships. Over 500 gifts are expected to be distributed during a special gift giving event on December 10th, which will also include a visit from Santa.

Community members can support Operation Holiday Cheer three ways. Individuals can either pick a few items off the tree in Girls Inc.’s office at 5315 Foothill Road in Carpinteria, purchase the items, and bring them in by December 2nd; or purchase a gift from the organization’s Amazon Wish List, which will ship directly to Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. Cottage Health Hospitals Earn National Awards

RECOGNIZING THE QUALITY CARE THAT COTTAGE HOSPITALS PROVIDE their patients, the Leapfrog Group has awarded an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2022 to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital. This national award honors the hospitals for protecting patients from preventable harm and errors, and is presented based on over 30 national performance measures.

The Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital in Solvang also was recently honored, earning a four star rating from Medicare.gov, which rates hospital performance on quality measures in comparison to hospitals nationwide.

Organic Soup Kitchen Partners with DoorDash to Expand SoupMeal Delivery

VADA at SB High School Receives Approval for New Building Plans

ANEW HOME IS ON THE HORIZON for Santa Barbara High School’s Visual Arts & Design Academy (VADA). Construction plans for a new state-of-the-art building for the program were approved by the Santa Barbara Unified School Board last week.

“It’s been years of dreaming and working on a new space designed especially to cultivate our student’s creativity and prepare them for their future,” said Daniel Barrett, VADA program director. “The dream is now a reality and it is exhilarating to see it coming together. We are so grateful for the support we’ve received thus far from our donors.”

Designed with a modern, flexible approach, the building will support enhanced curriculum for visual arts, design, and creative studies. It will span 3,350 square feet and include a digital design lab, indoor/outdoor studio workspace, shop areas for new technology, photography, and integrated exhibition space.

The contract for the construction of the new building was awarded to McGillivray Construction, who will begin construction on the new facility on Thursday, December 1st. The project is expected to be completed in January 2024.

A matching grant from the California Department of Education, acquired through a partnership with the Santa Barbara Unified School District, will add to the Measure I 2016 bond funds allocated to the project. Applications Open for 2023 Youth Chef Apprentice Program

The City of Santa Barbara’s Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for its 2023 Chef Apprentice Program. Open to local high school-aged students, the program offers students the opportunity to learn about professions in the culinary arts from experienced professionals. Participants during each class will cook a multi-course meal that they can take home with them, as well as learn foundational skills such as food preparation techniques and health and safety standards.

Participation is capped at 30 students. Programming will be held on a weekly basis, January through April, at the Franklin Neighborhood Center and Westside Neighborhood Center.

Central Library Opens Children’s Library Access During Construction

Local Author William Dalziel to Sign New Book at Tecolote Books

JUST IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY

SHOPPING, local author and illustrator William Dalziel has released his second children’s book, Charlie’s Dream. A sequel to his first children’s picture book, Ulma, The Kidnapped Tree, Charlie’s Dream follows Charlie the eastern blue jay on a fantastical dream where he imagines uniting all of his bird friends to save Ulma, an American Elm tree, from deforestation. Together, the birds fly to the top of a mountain to consult an ancient, giant spider on how to save Ulma. The spider directs them to California, with a western blue jay mentioning a city by the sea named after a saint - Santa Barbara.

Dalziel’s focus on centering his stories around an elm tree began in 2019 with Ulma, The Kidnapped Tree, which was based on his experiences working as an architect for the design & construction of the Northridge Fashion Center Project. When J.C. Penney & Co. wanted a live tree showcased in their courtyard, Dalziel traveled to the East Coast to select a young American Elm tree, known as “a Liberty Tree.” Drawing attention to the elm tree is crucial in both books, since the Dutch Elm Disease has ravaged most of the elm trees on the east coast. Together the books uplift themes of friendship, determination, environmental concerns, the magic of nature, and hope.

Dalziel will sign copies of Charlie’s Dream at Tecolote Books, 1470 East Valley Rd, from 2-4pm on Saturday, December 3rd. Copies of Ulma, The Kidnapped Tree wil also be available for purchase. Ten percent of event book purchases will be donated to local nonprofit, Storyteller Children’s Center.

Breast Cancer Resource Center Honors Evelyn Sullivan

EVELYN SULLIVAN has been awarded the 2022 Dorothy Shea Award by the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara (BCRC). Named for BCRC founding mother Dorothy Shea, this is the greatest honor BCRC gives to a volunteer. Sullivan is also a “founding mother,” in addition to the organization’s Treasurer, a self-titled “Volunteer for Life,” and being a tireless champion of the BCRC and individuals facing breast cancer. She first learned of efforts to establish BCRC while volunteering for the local American Cancer Society chapter. NO BOOK BETTER CAPTURES THE MAGIC AND WONDER intrinsic to experiencing the holidays as a child than The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Published in 1985, the tale has become synonymous with the holiday season, joining the ranks of literary classics such as The Night Before Christmas and A Christmas Carol

Its 2004 animated film adaptation also contributed to its popularity. Yet the original picture book form, with Allsburg’s gorgeous illustrations, remains the most engaging way for young readers to first experience this story.

Recounted as a treasured, life changing memory, The Polar Express follows an unnamed boy as he discovers a train, named “The Polar Express,” parked outside of his home one snowy Christmas Eve. Upon climbing aboard the train, he is whisked away to the North Pole, enjoying hot chocolate and sweets with hundreds of other children who were similarly drawn from their beds. Once they arrive at the North Pole, Santa Claus selects the boy to receive the first gift of Christmas. With limitless options before him, the boy decides that he just wants a bell from the reindeer harnesses on Santa’s sleigh — whose ringing can only be heard by children and adults who believe.

The Polar Express heightens readers’ sense of wonder and ultimately conveys the message that feelings of magic are not limited to childhood. In being told from the perspective of the boy as an old man, the book lends a sense of authority that allows readers to experience it as if it were a true story. Allsburg also utilizes rich, descriptive language that adds a sense of awe to the boy’s fantastical journey, while using vocabulary straightforward enough for students in the second grade and up.

The book’s bittersweet conclusion, with the narrator sharing that those around him have lost their ability to hear the bell’s ringing, emphasizes the value of maintaining hope even when those around you have lost it. Combined with its transportive illustrations of a faithful train chugging through snowy mountains and the North Pole, The Polar Express is a charming selection for holiday season read-alouds.

WHEN WILL INFLATION SUBSIDE enough to bring down interest rates again? There are estimates that it takes from one year to ten years to cure large inflation spikes such as occurred this year, based on what pundits and economists see as past history.

But that hasn’t stopped shoppers. Retail sales that account for some half of consumer spending jumped a huge 1.3 percent in October, 7.6 percent YoY.

Consumers are keeping up with inflation, in other words, because it’s the holidays and they want to celebrate their world returning to normal. Dining out at restaurants increased 1.3 percent in October, twice the current inflation rate.

And inflation is already cooling. The Fed has pumped up shortterm rates from essentially zero to four percent in 2022, which has pummeled stock and bond prices. But financial markets rallied on Tuesday because the Producer Price Index (PPI) for wholesale goods and services continued to decline. Wholesale prices in October rose just 0.2 percent month over month and core inflation without food, energy, and trade services declined from 5.6 to 5.4 percent YoY.

Other pundits are predicting as much as ten years, because they cite the 1970’s era of stagflation. Inflation soared to as high as 14 percent in 1981 after ten years of wage-price spirals. It was another ten years before inflation returned to its more normal two to three percent range.

But this inflationary spiral has lasted just months, not years as in the 1970s, as Nobel Prize-winner and former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke has pointed out. So, there’s no reason for anyone to press the panic button, stock and bond traders included. Consumers are riding this inflation wave just fine to date.

Why shouldn’t they be upbeat, with Americans still fully employed?

My bet is that inflation will drop quickly during the coming winter as supply chains continue to improve, which ground to a halt during the worldwide pandemic lockdowns.

The NY Federal Reserve’s Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI) stated as much in its latest release. “The GSCPI’s year-to-date movements suggest that global supply chain pressures are falling back in line with historical levels,” it said.

That means consumer prices will continue to decline as well, since the PPI measures the raw materials and data that go into retail products and services.

Alas, retail inflation is still too high, since the CPI declined to 7.7 percent in October compared to a year ago, down from 8.2 percent in September. Predictions are all over the map as to when the inflation rate will return to a more normal range. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said in recent testimony it could take several years to return to the Federal Reserve’s two percent target.

The New York Fed also publishes a Survey of Consumer Expectations of inflation that also shows inflation is a short-term problem. “Median one- and three-year-ahead inflation expectations increased to 5.9 percent and 3.1 percent from 5.4 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively. (But) The median five-year-ahead inflation expectations, meanwhile, rose by 0.2 percentage point to 2.4 percent.”

The Producer Price Index for final demand in the U.S. rose 0.2 percent month-over-month in October of 2022, the same as a downwardly revised 0.2 percent increase in September. Goods cost went up 0.6 percent, the largest advance since a 2.2 percent rise in June, mainly pushed by a 5.7 percent jump in gasoline cost. Prices for diesel fuel, fresh and dry vegetables, residential electric power, chicken eggs, and oil field and gas field machinery also advanced. In contrast, the index for passenger cars declined 1.5 percent. Meanwhile, services cost fell 0.1 percent, the first decline since November of 2020.

So, the inflation outlook is still muddled, but consumers’ inflation expectations give us a better picture of how consumers will behave in the near future. It is another ingredient that helps to determine the Fed’s next move, and when shoppers buy or hold.

All this news backs my bet that inflation should return to historical levels as soon as next summer.

5. Bid Security. The Bid Proposal must be accompanied by bid security of ten (10) percent of the maximum bid amount, in the form of a cashier’s or certified check made payable to City, or a bid bond executed by a surety licensed to do business in the State of California on the Bid Bond form included with the Contract Documents. Each Contractor and Subcontractor must pay no less than the specified rates to all workers employed to work on the Project. The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work must be at least time and one-half.

6.3 Compliance. The Contract will be subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR, under Labor Code § 1771.4.

7. Performance and Payment Bonds. The successful bidder will be required to provide performance and payment bonds, each for 100% of the Contract Price, as further specified in the Contract Documents.

8. Substitution of Securities. Substitution of appropriate securities in lieu of retention amounts from progress payments is permitted under Public Contract Code § 22300.

9. Subcontractor List. Each Subcontractor must be registered with the DIR to perform work on public projects. Each bidder must submit a completed Subcontractor List form with its Bid Proposal, including the name, location of the place of business, California contractor license number, DIR registration number, and percentage of the Work to be performed (based on the base bid price) for each Subcontractor that will perform Work or service or fabricate or install Work for the prime contractor in excess of one-half of 1% of the bid price, using the Subcontractor List form included with the Contract Documents.

His own conscience is somehow directed by an artistic grandfather, in another stunning portrayal by the award-winning Anthony Hopkins playing the elderly patriarch of the family. The film is a little like Woody Allen’s Radio Days, and as in Little Odessa, there are echoes of scenes from 1972’s The Godfather. The film even suggests thematic directions seen in playwright Arthur Miller’s theatrical masterpiece, Death of A Salesman.

The pace of the film is sometimes slow and meandering, but most of the scenes have an

originality that gets this coming-of-age story pulsating forward. This new accomplishment from director Gray focuses on the minefields of his own, specific, troubling childhood to deliver one of the most authentic director-tellshis-own-story of recent years as he captures confusion, heartbreak, and guilt in surprising ways. Scenes feel known, keen, and universal. The film is on an intimate level, and uses few bells and whistles, and thrives on the keen dramatic arcs of the scenes and on the performances.

Armageddon Time looks like a gritty documentary and suggests a home-made film with sepia-reddish tones and shadows in the lightingcinematography work giving the film a distinct visual atmosphere. The intimate cinematography is from Darius Khondji, the Iranian-French who has shot with some of the great international directors including Bong Joon-ho (Okja) and Uncut Gems for the Safie brothers, as well as the recent Bardo. The themes that emerge include both overt and passive racism and the impossible quest of achieving The American Dream without hurting other people along the way. The film also explores memories of tight-knit families, which may be a fantasy cooked up by emotional recollections of the past.

The cast offers exceptional performances by most, especially Anthony Hopkins as a wise and gentle grandfather,

Jeremy Strong as a father with great insecurities and erupting anger; Anne Hathaway as a frustrated yet strong, loving mother, and young Banks Repeta as the protagonist of this story.

Hopkin’s portrayal is so fluid and empathetic, audiences will be reminded why he continues to provide fascinating characters, even in the last chapters of his career. Anne Hathaway is charismatic, possibly her best role in years. And young Banks Repeta is able to carry his weight with a multi-layered and honest performance. As for Jeremy Strong, this is his most standout portrayal to date outside of his award gathering work in the HBO series, Succession. You just have to see the film to experience the gifted touch these actors offer.

The director James Gray and star Jeremy Strong were on-hand for a preview screening with SBIFF Cinema Society and provided insightful commentary. The dual interview was conducted by Roger Durling, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

According to Gray, “The film for me was a ghost story, where I had realized history and myth begins with the personal. This look back at my young self was not always endearing and gorgeous. I wanted to explore class and privilege as well as racism.... my movie ends in failure for the main character, and points out that the older you get, the fewer answers you have, and looking at my family there was a co-mingling of love and violence.” According to actor Jeremy Strong, “James (Gray) has made a story where a catastrophic event is like a small seed with concentric circles that ripple outward. There is difficulty in living with integrity in this world, the film is about survival and compromise. As an actor in this project you feel like a vessel passing through an electrical storm.”

The film has been received favorably by film critics and made a noteworthy debut at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival where it received a sevenminute standing ovation.

APOLOGIES ARE IN ORDER! It appears that I failed to report on an important addition to the Santa Barbara harbor, one I pass by almost every day. Despite my frequent visits to the Maritime Museum, it seems I’ve had blinders on to have missed the May opening of Anchor Rose a restaurant overlooking our historic harbor with 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean and downtown Santa Barbara. Anchor Rose, located right next to the Maritime Museum in the harbor’s most historic structure, is the absolute perfect spot for cocktails and starters, lunch or dinner, to people watch or to enjoy the sun’s late afternoon glow over the harbor. If you’ve read this far, you’ll understand how having ‘blinders on’ might have a whole new meaning with such an oversight!

Anchor Rose’s historic location was originally the Naval Reserve Armory, built for the Navy by the WPA (Works Project Administration), and later became known as the Naval Reserve Center Santa Barbara. In 1939 two years before WWII the City had deeded the land over to the Navy with the customary $1.00 payment as city leaders felt strongly that a Naval Reserve Armory would be beneficial to Santa Barbara to aid in civil defense, natural disasters, and community projects. By 1948, the facility was upgraded to the Naval Reserve Training Center and for many years local Naval Reservists trained and served there. Their training and service continued to benefit their communities as well as their country.

In the mid-1990s – after lengthy negotiations – the Navy sold the Reserve Center to the City for $2.4 million. A celebration was held on December 2, 1994, in which the city commemorated the closing of the center by staging a party with a World War II theme. Actress and local resident, Jane Russell was among the 500 guests. The following year, in January 1995, the Navy ended its tenure.

The building now houses the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and has previously been the home of numerous well-known restaurants of the past: Chuck’s Waterfront Grill, Endless Summer Bar Cafe, Chomp on the Rocks, and SALTY at the Beach. And presently… The Anchor Rose!

And now here’s my story! Last Sunday, in an attempt to learn more, I visited the Anchor Rose asking for the manager. To my absolute astonishment, Simon, who I’d known for years at one of my very favorite eateries, the Beachside Bar-Cafe on Goleta Beach, appeared. Way too long ago, my first visit to the Beachside Cafe was when my son was a student at UCSB and Goleta Beach was the go-to day-off place on Fridays. In the evenings he and I spent hours at the Beachside Cafe by the fireplace on the patio enjoying the warmth and smell of wood burning. A very young Simon was employed there and over the many, many years, until the Beachside Cafe was shuttered, he remained.

Imagine what a happy surprise it was to see Simon and during the time we spent together he described his journey from the Beachside to the Anchor Rose. “The

Beachside was my home from 1991 until it was closed …. 29 years!,” he exclaimed. “I began at 17 as a dishwasher and ended as General Manager. While there I got to know many people, including Amy Rose who was a long time server at the Beachside. The two of us wanted to find another restaurant near the water and, well ….the rest is history!” Amy’s dad Bob Rose and other enthusiastic investors believed in their plan and helped to make it a reality in a historic building on the harbor walkway. “This is a fabulous place to be and apparently others from the Cafe agreed. The Beachside’s Chef joined our team at Anchor Rose along with former managers and servers.” He added enthusiastically, “This is the place to be and we’re here to stay!”

Walking back to my car I realized that Santa Barbara really is a tight knit community. Who knew that some of the former gang could regroup in a new restaurant with a selection of fabulous beverages from a full bar, tasty snacks, and delicious meals along with a beautiful view overlooking the harbor? Bet you can’t guess who’s going to be spending a lot of time at Anchor Rose?

Cate Blanchett to Receive SBIFF's Outstanding Performer of the Year Award

FTER STUNNING MOVIEGOERS WITH HER POWERFUL PORTRAYAL OF COMPOSER LYDIA TÁR in director Todd Field’s drama Tár, Academy Award-winning actor Cate Blanchett will receive the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award. She will accept the award following a conversation about her career leading up to Tár at the Arlington Theatre on Friday, February 10th.

“Cate Blanchett is an artist that has nothing left to prove; she is one of the most brilliant actresses everyet she keeps challenging herself and proving over and over again that she's the most outstanding performer!” said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling.

SBIFF’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award honors those individuals who have distinguished themselves with remarkable, stand-out performances. Past honorees have included Sacha Baron Cohen, Adam Driver, Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone.

This marks the second time Blanchett has earned this honor, with her first SBIFF Outstanding Performer award bestowed in 2014 for her compelling performance in Blue Jasmine. In 2008, she also accepted SBIFF’s highest honor, the Maltin Modern Master Award, for her portrayals of Queen Elizabeth I in Queen Elizabeth: The Golden Age and singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in I’m Not There

From starring in The Lord of the Rings films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe to dramas such as Carol and Nightmare Alley, Blanchett contributes nuanced emotions and dynamic acting to each role. In addition to her acting, Blanchett has also worked as an artistic director, producer, and humanitarian. Her 2022 roles have included the mockumentary television series Documentary Now! as well as a cameo as a stop-motion monkey in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

A Studio Open House, Tour, & Sale with Artist Kevin A. Short

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED FOR HIS COMPELLING OCEANSCAPES

Short will host a unique event at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum from 5 to 7pm on Saturday, December 3rd. A combination of a studio open house, personal exhibit tours, and sale of his work, the event will celebrate Short’s exhibition The Peaceful Sea, currently on display at the SBMM gallery and Munger Theater through December 31st.

“Short’s paintings are imbued with narrative and emotion,” said Emily Falke, Director of Collections and Curator at SBMM and an artist herself. “They chronicle our experiences as a coastal community, depicting all the outdoor joys available to us – paddling, boating, surfing, swimming, just being at the beach – and pay tribute to the beauty of the ocean and the culture that has helped form this part of the world.”

Raised in Santa Barbara, Short developed his love of the ocean through sailing, fishing, and spending long days in the local surf. He began his art training with a toy watercolor set and a pile of crayons, drawing on leftover butcher paper in the middle of the kitchen floor. Ultimately, he honed his professional skills studying at the University of New Mexico, Pepperdine University in Malibu, and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Short’s speciality remains his contemporary landscapes and oceanscapes of the Pacific Coast, as well as his

Variety is the word, with contemporary work representing many genres from abstract to realism, figurative to urban landscape and including a variety of sculptural media as well as paintings and digital media.

“I love working the gallery’s front desk, helping people discover the talent of our Santa Barbara area artists. So many viewers have commented about the quality and variety of the work”, noted Gallery Director Jan Ziegler.

For the past six years part of the annual holiday show has been the Mata Ortiz pottery market, featuring exquisitely crafted, hand built ceramic vessels from the small artisan

village of Mata Ortiz, in Northern Chihuahua, Mexico. This unique artist community of less than 2,000 residents developed their skills based on ancient Paquime pottery sherds found in the nearby mountains and have passed these skills from generation to generation since the 1960’s. Selling their pottery is currently the sole economy of the village, once a lumber town before the removal of the railroad. 10 West’s and your support helps keep their self-developed creative way of life alive.

As the techniques are passed down, many of the younger generation of potters have introduced their own contemporary designs and what one sees today has broadened from the indigenous Paquime designs, while keeping to the traditional Paquime methods and materials of craftsmanship.

“His paintings conjure specific moments in time, both imagined and remembered, and celebrates all the living colors of the sea,” expressed SBMM in a statement.

Community members will have the opportunity to purchase Short’s works during the December 3rd event. Approximately 40 artworks are currently on display, demonstrating Short’s diverse talents through posters, color sketches, copper drawings, and new paintings. Pieces vary in size from four by six inches to 36 by 48,” with a broad range of prices represented, presenting plenty of options for holiday shopping.

However, many of the artisans continue to produce the cultural designs of those who once lived on their lands and most of the clays and pigments are still dug from the mountains surrounding the village.

10 West Gallery is not your typical cooperative. Founding members voted earlyon to strive for the look and feel of a commercial gallery,

leaving the show design to Ziegler, allowing her to place the artwork for optimal visual flow and limiting the number of pieces so that each piece has some breathing room.

“Art galleries are not just for art buyers and collectors. We also serve as ambassadors, increasing awareness of the importance of the visual arts in society. Artwork is meant to be seen and enjoyed by all”, Jan said.

The gallery is open daily 11am to 5pm, closed on Tuesdays and opens at noon on Sundays.

Kids Draw Architecture

INSPIRED BY SANTA BARBARA’S

ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS, the Kids Draw Architecture exhibition is on view at the Architectural Foundation Gallery at 229 East Victoria Street until January 4th, 2023.

Every year, Kids Draw Architecture (KDA) brings youth and architects together to sketch important Santa Barbara buildings. This year’s sketch session took place on the lawn of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. The delightful drawings in the 2023 KDA calendar include a selection of those images drawn and submitted by participating kids capturing the historic Courthouse building with creativity and joy.

Explore the The Arts Fund’s 2022 Teen Arts Mentorship Exhibit

SHOWCASING THE CREATIVE TALENT OF LOCAL STUDENT ARTISTS, The Arts Fund’s 2022 Teen Arts Mentorship Show is now on display at the organization’s La Cumbre Plaza gallery. Located in the same building as the Museum of Sensory & Movement Experiences, the gallery includes pieces made by ten local high school students, spanning paintings, drawings, prints, photography, mixed-media works, and more.

Each of the works are available for purchase, with 90 percent of proceeds going directly to the students.

This was the first year since the beginning of the pandemic that the Teen Arts Mentorship Program was held in person. For over 25 years, the program has connected young artists to area professionals, offerings students the opportunity to develop their skills and learn more about the arts industry. To date, over 1,300 students and 34 schools have been impacted by The Arts Fund’s Teen Arts Mentorship programming. www.artsfundsb.org
