Fleck has been awarded 15 Grammys during his 40 year career and this is his first Bluegrass tour in 20 years.

He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as a member of New Grass Revival in 2020.

“It’s not a straight bluegrass album, but it’s written for a bluegrass band,” he explained. “I like taking that instrumentation, and seeing what I can do with it – how I can stretch it, what I can take from what I’ve learned from other kinds of music, and what can apply for this combination of musicians, the very particularly ‘bluegrass’ idea of how music works, and what can be accomplished that might be unexpected, but still has deep connections to the origins. That’s what I was going for, though I hadn’t done it in a long, long time.”

Béla Fleck and special guests will perform December 15th the third chapter in a decades-spanning trilogy which, by his counting, started with 1988’s Drive and continued with The Bluegrass Sessions, released eleven years later.

Over the long and lauded course of his unique creative run, Fleck - the world’s premier banjo virtuoso and a celebrated musical adventurer - has both dug deep into Jerry Douglass his instrument’s complex global history and unlocked the breadth of its possibilities. My Bluegrass Heart is a homecoming in sound, to be sure.

“They nearly always come back,” said Béla Fleck. “All the people that leave bluegrass. I had a strong feeling that I’d be coming back as well.”

Following a National Tour, Béla Sam Bush Fleck, his current band, and others, will perform My Bluegrass Heart at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, January 9th, 2022 in Stern Auditorium, on the Perelman Stage presented by Absolutely Live Entertainment.

HarborVOICE Santa Barbara’s Reef Growers NE OF THE SUPER FUN THINGS about writing this column is finding out about a whole lot of interesting stuff! This week was a total winner in the discovery category. By a circuitous route, I found myself in a mid-town location with an unusual assortment of fascinating sea life and an enlightening education, to boot. Who knew?

For clues, it helps to listen to Lance Orosco on KCLU! – exactly how I found my way to Odd Animals & Critters (more about the critters later!) located in a warehouse far from the harbor near Bath and Carrillo. Being the clueless wonder I am, images of colorful coral reefs I’d seen in underwater photography was the extent of my (less than vast) knowledge.

What I soon discovered upon entering the warehouse is that coral is a living creature with a social life all its own!

Odd Animals & Critters is the result of a partnership between three coral reef enthusiasts who call themselves “reefers,” Ryan Hughes, Sergio Castaneda, and Nicholas Juarez. I was lucky enough to meet two of the three on my visit: Hughes, who explained the shop’s purpose and goal, and Juarez who provided me an education about coral and its symbiotic relationships in the marine environment.

A variety of corals, resplendent with beautiful otherworldly colors, were on display in tanks throughout the shop. The entire room was bathed in blue light to highlight the colors and shapes of the coral.

A quick glance at the tanks with both coral and exotic fish soon gave me a sense of calm and comfort – probably the reason that dentist’s offices have huge tanks full of fish and coral, Owners Ryan Hughes and Nicholas Juarez. right?

On my visit I learned that coral consists of two types, one containing an exoskeleton called hard coral, and another without it called soft coral that flows in rhythm with the underwater currents.

“The fact that coral is a living organism is dependent upon a variety of factors,” explained Juarez. “The florescent colors you see in the coral is the result of a symbiotic relationship with a variety of algae called zoothanthelle that sustain the coral, and are themselves sustained by it.” He noted that coral is dependent upon a stable underwater environment which normally is the case as the ocean temperatures are surprisingly stable over the entire planet. However, stressors to the marine environment affect the ability of the coral to sustain itself, some of which include the present changes in temperature, Ph factors, and the imminent threat of global warming. Stressors such as these force the ‘zoot’ algae to leave the coral depriving it of sustenance.

“There are very little nutrients in the ocean so the underwater environment is highly competitive,” noted Juarez. “The algae can hop from one reef to another and the coral can no longer feed itself and will eventually die.”

“In the confines of our small warehouse we hope get to a place where we can develop a breed of coral with super immunity,” revealed Hughes. “We move the coral from one tank to the other so they might develop a tolerance for a variety of environments and will prove infinity more adaptable... at least, this is our mission!” To sustain the mission, Odd Animals & Critters supplies coral and services fish tanks up and down the State of California. At the moment, the three partners are looking for a larger space within which to do their work and continue their research. With the advent of climate change and the disappearance of some of the larger reefs that provide necessary sanctuaries for a variety of marine life, the mission of Odd Animals & Critters seems a most worthwhile venture.

A special treat for me was to watch Hughes actually feed the tropical fish that live amongst the coral in the main tank by hand. “What a bunch of beggars they are!” he laughed.

On the subject of critters, the shop also contains a variety of tarantulas (with names!) housed in small containers, observed and cared for by the owners. I have a history with a very special tarantula, so I was most happy to meet some of the local residents. UCSB Immerses Audiences in the World of Chekhov’s Seagull

ELIVERING VIBRANT AND INTENSELY HUMAN PERFORMANCES, the students of the UCSB Department of Theater and Dance have once again displayed their talent for bringing original complexity to classic works by presenting Seagull.

Directed by Risa Brainin and translated by Libby Appel, last weekend’s production invited audience members to sit onstage while the actors performed mere feet away. In doing so, viewers were all the better situated to witness UCSB skillfully capture Anton Chekhov’s iconic characters as they discuss love, art, and what gives life meaning.

A comedy-drama, Seagull follows a small cast of writers, actors, and their friends living in the 1896 Russian countryside. The story begins as Kostya (Ethan Kim) prepares to premiere his new play. Talking with his uncle, Sorin (Milo Marsden), Kostya expresses concern for his mother’s reaction, as she is the famous actress Arkadina (Catherine Ballantyne). He also vents his frustration that she has developed a relationship with the writer Trigorin (Harut Simonian), and that he loves the aspiring actress, Nina (Kirsten Høj). Meanwhile, the estate manager’s daughter, Masha (Val Murillo), is secretly in love with Kostya, rebuffing the town teacher, Medvedenko (Matte Kranz).

Arkadina repeatedly mocks her son’s play for its Kirsten Høj (Nina) contemporary style and cryptic themes, leading Kostya to suddenly end the performance. Yet the local doctor, Dorn (Lucas Cheng), is strangely moved. Some time passes, and Nina begins to fall in love with Trigorin, contributing to Kostya’s depression and Arkadina’s possessiveness. The plot then launches into an ever-mounting drama peppered with witticisms as these and other characters reflect on personal and larger truths.

All of the actors understood and reflected the nuances, desires, and faults of their respective characters. Each individual added personal touches to their tone, delivery, and mannerisms to emphasize that their characters were human — capable of feeling and giving great love, as well as immense pain.

Kim portrayed a Kostya that was at once an inspired artist in love and a man troubled by the failings of his peers, society, and personal mental health. Ballantyne’s Arkadina was enchanting and playfully vain, yet exhibited true depth in moments of sincerity. Høj aptly conveyed the innocent ambitions of a young, sheltered actress, seamlessly growing into the role of a wiser, disenchanted woman. As Trigorin, Simonian reflected a writer who was thoughtful with his work, yet careless in his personal relationships.

Meanwhile, Marsden’s Sorin contributed real depth to the play’s dynamic cast and themes, offering the perspective of an aging, regretful individual. As Dorn, Cheng presented a charmingly perceptive but aloof observer, while Murillo and Kranz provided comic relief alongside commentary on the nature of life and love.

Cementing the success of UCSB’s production was the audience’s presence on stage with the actors, making viewers feel more connected to the characters and set as a whole. Created by Scenic Designer Ann Sheffield, the set consisted of a wooden floor spread out before the audience, with stagehands moving pieces of furniture on and off stage for location changes. A wooden panel painted with a foggy landscape and some papiermâché birch trees designed

by Mason Bray bordered the audience, allowing for quick transitions between indoor and outdoor scenes.

Yet the ever-present trees also served another purpose. Used in the first scene as the stage of Kostya’s failed play, their presence Harut Simonian (Trigorin), Kirsten Høj (Nina), and Catherine Ballantyne (Arkadina) was a visual reminder of Kostya’s struggles as an artist.

The stage’s curtain also remained up for the play’s entirety, with gentle musical accompaniment (provided by Gaurav Mishra, Olivia Mendoza, Ellie Lim, and Nina Jekel) indicating tone and scene shifts. The black expanse of empty seats represented the lake Nina is drawn to “like a seagull,” fully immersing audience members within the setting and themes of Chekhov’s Seagull.

WaterWise High School Video Contest Opens Applications

C

HALLENGING LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO CREATE ORIGINAL VIDEOS ABOUT WATER USE EFFICIENCY, the Santa Barbara County Water Agency has opened applications for the 23rd Annual WaterWise High School Video Contest. To reflect the significance of sustainable outdoor water use amidst the ongoing drought, this year’s theme is “Be Water Wise in Your Garden.” All English and Spanish video submissions are due by March 4th, 2022.

Up to six videos — three in English and three in Spanish — may be submitted by each participating school. Videos must be entertaining, informative, and 30 seconds-long. First place English and Spanish video creators will receive $500, second place will be awarded $250, and third place $150. There will also be a People’s Choice Award prize of $500, with winning videos also having the chance to be aired in local movie theatres and TV. Additional financial prizes will be distributed to the winners’ schools.

Annual Messiah Sing-Along Cancelled

NVITING COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ACT AS THE CHOIR OF HANDEL’S MESSIAH, the Messiah Sing-Along is a staple of the Santa Barbara holiday season. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, event organizers have announced that this tradition will be canceled for this holiday season. Instead, would-be participants and all other individuals are encouraged to donate to the Unity Shoppe, which the Messiah SingAlong has supported for many years.

“The Messiah SingAlong adds enjoyment to the holiday season for many, and its cancellation is extremely regrettable,” said event co-founder Roby Scott. “100 percent of Messiah Sing-Along ticket sales benefit Unity Shoppe, and this means a financial loss for them as well.

Blood Donors Eligible to Win Private Screening of The Matrix Resurrections

O ENCOURAGE ALL ELIGIBLE DONORS TO GIVE BLOOD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, the American Red Cross will enter all individuals who donate between November 29th and December 16th for a chance to win a private screening of The Matrix Resurrections for themselves and 50 guests.

Donors who give in this time frame will also receive a $10 Amazon gift card. This effort follows a nationwide decrease in blood supplies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic also resulted in fewer blood drives at schools and colleges, contributing to a 34% drop in new blood donors from last year − one of the largest year-to-year decreases and one that could threaten essential medical care for patients,” explains the American Red Cross’ announcement. “Locally, the Central California Red Cross Region has experienced a 12% decrease in new blood donors this year.”

Rotary Club of Montecito Awards Community Grants

I

N THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT, the Rotary Club of Montecito Foundation has awarded a total of $15,000 in grant funding to 15 local nonprofit organizations. Distributed through the foundation’s annual Community Grants Program, each $1,000 grant was funded by bequests and ongoing contributions from club members. Going forward, these funds will benefit Santa Barbara area children, senior residents, and low-income families, as well as animals in need.

“Rotary Club members are committed to raising funds for good causes, and supporting activities and projects that make our communities stronger,” said Rotary Foundation President Kati Buehler. “These grants allow us to support a wide variety of services to our community and are a great example of the cooperative spirit that’s an essential part of Rotary’s work.”

To date, The Rotary Club of Montecito Foundation has awarded over $60,000 to local organizations through its Community Grants Program. Organizations are selected for their commitment to providing valuable support to the local community.

Pacific Pride Foundation Announces Campaign for Chad Robert Phillips Memorial Fund

I

N HONOR OF THE MEMORY OF CHAD ROBERT PHILLIPS, local philanthropist Clay Tedeschi has pledged $250,000 to establish the Pacific Pride Foundation’s Chad Robert Phillips Memorial Fund. A good friend of Tedeschi’s, Phillips passed away last year at 37 years of age. Now, PPF has launched a campaign to match Tedeschi’s pledge and raise $500,000 for the fund.

“Santa Barbara resident, Chad Robert Phillips, was a fun-loving beautiful young man with a loving family and friends,” said Kristin Flickinger, PPF Executive Director. “Like many members of the LGBTQ+ community, he was also plagued by demons and drank to numb the pain... To honor his life and ensure other young LGBTQ+ people struggling with mental health and addiction issues get the care they need, Clay has pledged $250,000 to create this memorial fund in Chad’s honor. The fund will support PPF’s youth programs and counseling services for youth and anyone affected by adverse childhood experiences.”

Ultimately, the fund holds the goal of expanding PPF’s counseling programs to ensure all community members’ needs are Chad Robert Phillips met. The fund will also build a comprehensive development program to diversify funding sources and support PPF’s ability to continue amidst difficult times, such as the ongoing pandemic.

“It has taken me a long time to appreciate how little I have known about the experiences of others in their life’s development, especially during formative years,” said Clay Tedeschi. “My brief friendship with Chad gave me insights into worlds I did not know. Chad brought to life an understanding for others often easily overlooked. I am thankful to Chad for that. I believe PPF’s youth programs and counseling services do make a difference. That is why I have established this endowment and I would be honored to have you join me in supporting them.”

CALM at Heart Event Raises $315,000

AISING A RECORD HIGH AMOUNT TO SUPPORT CALM’S CHILDHOOD TRAUMA PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS, community members gathered for CALM at Heart: Transforming Communities event on November 4th. Hosted at Susan and Robert Lieff ’s estate, Los Sueños, in Montecito, the event welcomed over 250 supporters, raising a total of $315,000.

“As board chair, I am constantly inspired by how the team at CALM shows up for the families in our community by working to prevent and heal trauma,” said CALM Board Chair Caroline Powers. “I am energized by how our supporters showed up for CALM in such a meaningful way; allowing us to continue this essential, life-changing work throughout the county.”

Emceed by Geoff Green of Santa Barbara City College Foundation, the luncheon featured inspiring talks from CALM’s Director of Clinical Operations Adolfo Garcia, North County Regional Manager Yvonne Nelson, and President & CEO Alana Walczak.

Through its theme of “transforming communities,” the event recognized the collective trauma of the past year and the lasting impact it will have on individuals and families countywide.

Going forward, all funds raised will go toward supporting CALM’s mission of supporting local children and families through its various prevention and treatment services.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Launches Operation Holiday Cheer

PREADING HOLIDAY CHEER AND GIFTS TO LOCAL GIRLS AND THEIR FAMILIES, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has launched its annual Operation Holiday Cheer campaign. Held in partnership with Cox Communications, this holiday giving program holds the goal of serving 100 families in need this holiday season, distributing more than 500 gifts and arranging for a special tamale lunch and visit with Santa Claus. In order to reach this goal, community members are encouraged to donate gifts prior to the program’s gift giving event on December 11th.

“Our team is beyond committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our girls, and we’re proud to engage the entire community with this initiative – through volunteering, making donations, or signing up as our local partners – to ensure all families receive gifts,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria.

“We are grateful to Cox Communications for partnering with us once again to deliver hope and cheer to local girls and their families this holiday season.”

Operation Holiday Cheer launched last year amidst the pandemic to ensure that families facing economic hardships had a special holiday season. Its efforts continue into this year, with community members able to support the program through a variety of ways.

First, individuals can donate gifts by visiting the “Giving Tree” located in the Girls Inc. office at 5315 Foothill Road in Carpinteria. There, they can purchase a few items on the tree and bring them in by December 2nd. Or, people can purchase a gift listed on the organization’s Amazon Wish List at https://tinyurl.com/4vatbjtb Community members can also sign up to bring a holiday box to their business with gift tags that include a Christmas wish. Employees will be able to take one of these tags, purchase the item, and return it to fill the holiday box.

Experience a night of creative and original dance as the UCSB Department of Theater and Dance presents Kinetic Lab 2021 at 7:30pm Thursday, December 2nd, and Friday, December 3rd. Hosted at UCSB’s Hatlen Theater, the program will include new works by BFA Dance students under the direction of Brandon Whited. From reflections on nature to the varying relationships people develop with each other, each student’s performance will create a new on-stage environment to explore different themes. Let the Seasoning Begin

Now a decade-deep into their annual seasonal package, known as “A Very She & Him Christmas Party” (also the title of their 2011 album), the duo brings a fresh but vintage-loving attitude to old yuletiding favorites, including It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas. It’s a suitable anthem for this season-opening affair in town, with many Christmas shows to come in December.

Take, for instance, the popular annual Westmont Christmas Festival, upgrading this year from the previous haunt of the First Presbyterian Church to the Granada Theater, a move upward and downtown, on December 3rd and 4th. In this long-standing tradition, Westmont program culls music, religious ceremony, poetry, Bible readings, and other modes of pageantry, drawing on the talents of Westmont College students and faculty.

MUSIC TO OUR EARS:

The Lobero Theater’s rebounding ascension into a rich fall schedule continued last week with a twofer of artists, in the general neighborhoods of Americana and Indie scenes, whose quirks become them. Tulsa, Oklahoma homey Paul Thorn, who has previously wowed audiences in this room and at the Live Oak Festival, brought along his crack band (including a feisty fine guitarist—slide and otherwise—Chris Simmons). Thorn somehow marries edge, ribaldry and warmth with his bluesy-rockfolking work, sprinkled with dirty jokes. His range of songs can be sensed, for instance, in the contrast of favorites Pimps & Preachers and Everything’s Gonna be Alright, presented as a feel good, singalong anthem come encore time.

Paul Thorn The following night at the Lobero, rootsy (or rootsy-sounding) music and liberal doses of offbeat comedy merged in the unique artist known as John Craigie. His star has been rising of late: SOhO used to be his go-to Santa Barbara venue, and this was his Lobero debut. Echoes of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott mingles with literate, eccentric humor in Craigie’s world, culminating in a rousing round of his best-known (and best?) song I Am California, as an encore.

Westmont Christmas Festival

TO DO AND HEAR: Breaking with the lockdown era continues on multiple fronts in the arts, and elsewhere, including the first post-lockdown live edition of UCSB’s Ensemble for Contemporary Music, whose longtime director Jeremy Haladyna has passed the directorial baton to Sarah Gibson. Gibson, who held forth in an online concert with ECM last spring, goes live with a program including music by Carolyn Shaw, Julius Eastman, Andy Akiho, and Katharine Balch. The performance by this year’s ECM—a rare chance to hear contemporary music in a town lacking much

In a column called “Sounds About Town,” it is more than proper to pay respects to a musician whose legacy and hands-on imprint on local sounds ran deep. The studio run by Ernie Orosco – with his brother Corey – was called Songwriters Music Studio, nestled in a suburban Goletan home, long before home studios became commonplace. SMS was a powerful creative incubator for countless local artists (including one of this columnist’s bands, a few decades back) and stars to be, Katy Perry and Jewel.

Lynn J Nagrone announced his passing on his But the producer/engineer/singerfacebook page with this photo of Ernie Orosco guitarist Ernie, whose recent passing followed on the heels of Cory’s death in 2017, was much more than just a laudatory studio-keep and local music nurturer. In the mid-60s, he helmed the recording/touring band Ernie & the Emperor, scoring a hit with Meet Me at the Corner in 1965, and other groups, before settling back down in Goleta to tend SMS studios and his Brian Faith Band. His passing signals the end of an era, a sub-era of Santa Barbara’s larger, storied music history.

VER THE YEARS, UCSB’s Arts & Lectures has done its fair share to keep alive the spirit of Christmas—in an alternative seasonal regalia sense. Often, the duties fell, quite logically, to Portland’s cheeky bastion of lovable kitsch and melodious menus, Pink Martini, including a tipsy stripped-down duet with leads Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes, in streaming form a year ago.

This year, the A&L spotlight turns to another ripe, off-the-radar and again Portland-rooted purveyor of musical goodness, the act known as She & Him, playing the Arlington Theatre on Thursday, December 2nd. This definitely cool, understated and sometimes reverb-doused power duo consists of Zooey Deschanel (actress/singer-songwriter/lovely person) and M. Ward (musical handyman, including his own solo career on the indie-retro scene).

Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

S A FULL MOON SHONE UPON THE MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE WEST, the melodic refrains of composer Jennifer Higdon’s Wise Moon song cycle resounded before an audience for the very first time. Performed by mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce and pianist Chien-Lin Lu, the world premiere was the highlight of November 18th’s Marilyn Horne Song Competition Winners Recital. Bookending this piece were Pierce and Lu’s skilled renditions of works by seven additional composers, culminating in a standing ovation that showed this highly-anticipated concert was worth the three years-long wait.

A Pulitzer Prize-winner and recipient of three Grammys, Higdon is one of the most criticallyacclaimed composers in the contemporary classical music genre. Previously, Higdon acted as the judge of the 2019 Marilyn Horne Song Competition, with the Music Academy commissioning her to compose a new work for the winners to perform in 2020.

The result was Wise Moon, a song cycle that perfectly matches original piano accompaniments to five poems focused on the moon’s beauty and significance. As Higdon shared before the premiere, she was inspired to compose the piece after witnessing a full moon shining over downtown Philadelphia, moved by its constant presence and inspired by the words generations of poets have penned in its honor.

Poetry is inherently lyrical, but it takes a comprehensive understanding of a piece for a composer to fully capture and relate the written words’ essence through music. Higdon clearly possesses this skill, holding the audience gathered in Hahn Hall spellbound. Despite face masks covering the lower half of the listeners’ faces, each individual’s eyes revealed the audience had collectively embarked on a musical journey to the moon and back, deriving joy from the shared experience.

Jennifer Higdon Yet for all the value of Higdon’s work, it was Pierce and Lu who faithfully breathed life into the piece. Together, the duo conveyed the varying emotions called for by each poem, with Pierce’s soaring vocals resonating from the thoughtful reflections of Carl Sanburg’s Harvest Moon to the quick, evening rendezvous described in The Night is Still

by Edith Matilda Thomas. Lu met Pierce’s voice at every step, matching his piano playing to be at one moment plaintive and another passionate.

“It’s actually like a duet between the piano and singer,” explained Higdon. “So the piano part is a lot more complex, it actually is much more colorful than what you normally hear... Each song is like a separate world.”

Pierce and Lu continued to exhibit their mastery as individuals and a team throughout the recital, including their opening performances of Claude Debussy’s Trois Chansons de Bilitis, selections from Hugo Wolf ’s Spanisches Liederbuch, and selections from Wonju Lee’s Yihwawoo Songbook. In presenting this blend of classic and contemporary works, Pierce and Lu displayed their great range as artists, highlighting the talent behind their respective successes. For the 20212022 season, Pierce will debut four roles at the Houston Grand Opera, including Mercédès in Carmen. Meanwhile, Lu currently acts as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Postdoctoral Resident Scholar at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

After Wise Moon, the duo closed with a series of songs that showcased Pierce’s skill for emphasizing each song’s unique themes by naturally changing her demeanor, beginning with Arnold Schoenberg’s Galathea. Then, Lu’s hands fell even more seriously upon the piano keys as Pierce voiced the loss captured in Funeral Blues by Benjamin Britten. The pair quickly shifted their tone as they followed with Isabelle Aboulker’s Lettre d’amour.

The evening ended on a playful note, as Pierce gave a lively performance of Amour by William Bolcom. As the final note rang out, the audience leaped to their feet. Surrounded by applause, Pierce and Lu gave an encore performance of Marc Blitzstein’s I Wish It So, securing this fall’s Marilyn Horne Song Competition Winners Recital as an utterly memorable experience.

Montecito Bank & Trust Awards $1.2 Million to Nonprofits

ICKING OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON as it has for the last 19 years, Montecito Bank & Trust celebrated their special annual tradition of the Community Dividends awards luncheon this week. Through this unique giving program, the Bank has granted more than $19 million to local Santa Barbara and Ventura County nonprofit organizations. The Community Dividends $1.2 million investment in the nonprofit community accounts for the majority of the Bank’s annual total investment nonprofit giving of $1.5 million.

Chairman & CEO, Janet Garufis, welcomed 179 nonprofit leaders from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties to the Janet Garufis Community Dividends luncheon at the (Chairman and CEO, Montecito Bank & Trust) Hilton Santa Barbara Beachside Resort.

She expressed gratitude for the work nonprofit organizations do to lift up communities even when it seemed nearly impossible. “Every year we give thanks for you, but this year we are especially grateful for you, for your staff and your boards, and for your commitment to your missions. You did make a difference. You are making a difference,” she stated.

The nonprofit leaders were joined by the Bank’s board and leadership team, in addition to the specially-trained MB&T Associates who dedicated the last 20 months to the MB&T Relief Center and were responsible for issuing Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to a vast majority of the nonprofits in the room. It was a celebration of gratitude, perseverance, and partnership.

“The lessons of the last 20 months inspire us to keep looking forward to what’s possible. We have learned a lot - about ourselves, our communities, and how a business Anne Towbes, and Janet Garufis or an organization can adapt at critical moments, reinvent themselves and persevere through change,” said Garufis.

The SBNC Bridge Clinic will increase access to treatment at a location close to Cottage Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Community Dividends and the Michael Towbes Community Impact Dividend primarily focus on supporting organizations or programs that serve low- and moderate-income individuals and families in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

Dividends are awarded to organizations that serve youth and education, social services, medical and health services, and the arts.

OCALS SEARCHING FOR NEW, FUN, AND FASHIONABLE STYLES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON need only visit Dylan Star Clothing Boutique. Previously a pop-up store in Paseo Nuevo, the business has now made the shopping center the permanent home of its second location.

Inside, visitors enjoy a welcoming shopping experience as they browse an expansive range of clothing, jewelry, and accessories all hand-selected by store owner and born-and-raised Santa Barbaran Erica Brown.

“Walking down State Street and going to the mall as a teenager was the thing to do, and my mom and I have been shopping together since we were young,” shared Brown. “I felt like there was this really missing piece in Santa Barbara Erica Brown and in lots of different areas that was a well-priced boutique that had more of a luxury feel — luxury as in the way you’re treated, not necessarily the brands you carry.

We know you, we remember you, we say hello, and we want to help you style.”

Brown worked in the hairstyling field for approximately 18 years after graduating from Santa Barbara City College’s cosmetology program. After briefly living in Orange County, she returned to the area about twelve years ago, working both as a photographer and as a hairdresser at Salon U. Yet Brown was unable to shake her lifelong passion for clothes and fashion, and as time went on she grew

more determined to finally open her own business. In 2018, she launched Dylan Star as a pop-up shop within Salon U. A year later, she opened Dylan Star’s first location in the Funk Zone at 110 Anacapa St. When this location had to temporarily close in January 2020 to fix water damage, Brown decided to open a pop-up store in Paseo Nuevo in the meantime. She ended up maintaining the pop-up through October, ultimately deciding to open a second, permanent store downtown.

Altogether, Dylan Star presents an eclectic collection of unique clothing items, with styles that are inclusive of all genders. Brown personally chooses every shirt, sweater, jacket, dress, and pair of pants, visiting a Las Vegas trade show twice a year to determine what the stores will include for the next six months. She also works with representatives from international clothing companies, resulting in an ever-rotating trendy, original inventory.

“My whole goal of this store is to make the men and women that come in feel better when they leave,” commented Brown.

The store also presents a selection of jewelry, hair accessories, and small gift items, making it easy for visitors to create complete outfits in-store. Dylan Star also offers shoppers personal styling experiences to ensure people leave feeling confident. All of the store’s employees are well-versed in fashion and accessorizing, and can help shoppers determine which looks best suit them. Individuals can also reach out to Brown for more private styling experiences, where they can bring in items they already own to receive advice on how to utilize and enhance their closet.

OLLOWING UP HIS FIRST “FAUX FOLK” ALBUM, between, in 2002, Joe Woodard is poised for flight again in folk-ish mode, with the pending Black Friday release of Goleta Electric. The album’s first single, Freedom in Kentfield, dropped November 23rd, with singer-songwriter Zach Gill lending a hand on accordion.

Woodard, the songwriterguitarist-situationist from such bands as Headless Household, Flapping Flapping, Dudley, and more, hunkered down in his home studio during the pandemic lockdown to produce this 18-track track album, on Household Ink Records.

A “pandemic project,” the winding journey of this all-original song set ranges from the 1990s to COVID-era song-smithing. Fittingly, the album kicks off with Falling in with the Out Crowd, recorded with Jesse Rhodes and initially released on Be Love, a 2018 tribute album to the late, great Santa Barbara Studio guru Robinson Eikenberry. Eikenberry, who produced between, had been plotting with Woodard to start work on this project shortly before his passing in 2017. Goleta Electric is humbly dedicated to his ongoing inspiration.

A healthy list of musical guests also joins the party, including Jim Connolly, Julie Christensen, Ellen Turner, Allegra Heidelinde, Shelley Rudolph, Chris Symer, Jesse Rhodes, Bill Flores, and Brian Mann. It’s obvious that the American Rescue Plan saved many lives and livelihoods, and the infrastructure bill means caring for the planet as well as each other with its billions spent on climate change and improving health and sanitation.

It’s less obvious what spending on social infrastructure does. Investing in children, improved healthcare, and paid family leave strengthens families, something both political parties should be for, but conservatives have opposed since FDR’s New Deal.

Who will get most of the good jobs in construction from rebuilding our physical infrastructure? Some 80 percent go to lessthen-college-educated workers, according to a recent analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, a labor think tank.

In part because of the recovery money already distributed during the pandemic, median household income has resumed its climb for the first time since 2000, as shown in the above PEW Research graph.

In 2018, the median income of U.S. households stood at $74,600. This was 49 percent higher than its level in 1970, when the median income was $50,200, said PEW. (Incomes are expressed in 2018 dollars.)

But the overall trend masks two distinct episodes in the evolution of household incomes (the first lasting from 1970 to 2000 and the second from 2000 to 2018) and in how the gains were distributed, said PEW. The pandemic is bringing about a whole transformation of the American and world economies because it is bringing Americans together again in common cause, and history

HE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN, The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the soon to pass Build Back Better Plan show that the American ‘can do’ spirit is alive, and the innate generosity and optimism that is so much a part of the American spirit is back again.

So will a revival of that spirit last, in spite of the ongoing pandemic, red vs. blue state civil war, and still record joblessness?

The truest expressions of Americans’ character have come out during past catastrophes, such as the Great Depression and World War II. And almost ten years of unparalleled growth followed the horrors of World War I and the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

Record economic growth is also following this pandemic, with Q1 and Q2 2021 GDP up more than six percent, and the fourth quarter possibly growing at the same pace after the third quarter pause due to the Delta variant surge.

Americans are showing that they care for each other with these bills—that lifting children and the poorest out of poverty also lifts themselves. That renewing our roads, bridges, energy grids and confronting the greatest threat to our future, climate change, will ensure a country that

HE WINDMILL PALM HAS FOUND OUR MILD MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE TO BE A COMFORTABLE PLACE in which to live and thrive. It is drought-hardy, surviving during our periods of sparse rainfall with little or no additional irrigation. It is the most cold hardy of cultivated palms, able to grow in British Columbia, in England, and in parts of Northern Europe, where it has survived temperatures of minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit!

The Windmill Palm is a single-stemmed palm and is slow-growing, at less than six inches per year, to reach its usual height of 40 feet. When given more water, it will grow faster and reach heights of over 50 feet.

The trunk is generally six to eight inches in diameter, but a thick layer of hairy fibers makes it appear much wider. This course, fibrous, and brownish material (two to four inches thick) is quite distinctive and is one of the best ways to identify a Windmill Palm. The fibers, formed from old leaf sheaths, completely cover the trunk, and will persist (remain on the trunk), until removed.

The rounded crown is made up of dark green fronds (three to six feet long), which emerge from the center of the crown. The palmate (hand-shaped) fronds are circular (two to four feet in diameter) and stand at the end of long stems (two to three feet long), called petioles. Each frond is deeply serrated into 30 to 50 segments, creating a fan-like or windmill-like shape. The fronds also persist on the trunk, unless they are pruned off.

Windmill Palms are classified as “dioecious,” since male and female flowers occur on separate trees. However, in some instances, the male tree will produce flowers that are “hermaphroditic,” containing both male and female sexual parts, and will produce viable seeds. Flowering occurs in June through August. The male flowers are creamy yellow, and the female flowers are light green; both types emerge on densely branched panicles (one to two feet in length), which emerge from between the fonds. They are often inconspicuous, being partially hidden within the crown.

After flower pollination, the resulting Windmill Palm fruit palm fruit is a “drupe” (a single seed surrounded by a fleshy covering and a skin), which is up to ½ inch long, three-lobed, and kidney-shaped. It is yellow and smooth when young, turning to blue-black and coarsely wrinkled when mature (August to November). In Asia, the seeds are used in traditional medicines and are believed to be cancer-fighting.

The Windmill Palm is thought to have originated in central China at elevations up to 8,000 feet, which would help explain its cold hardiness. For centuries, it has been cultivated throughout China, Japan, and Southern Asia for its trunk fibers, which are highly valued in making extremely strong rope, netting, and cloth, so its true natural range is hard to determine and could be much larger.

This species is also known by other common names, “Chinese Windmill Palm,” “Chusan Palm,” and “Hemp Palm.” Its botanical name is Trachycarpus fortunei. The genus name comes from a combination of the Greek words, “trachy,” meaning rough, and “carpus,” meaning seed. The specific epithet honors the Scottish botanist, Robert Fortune (1812-1880), who reportedly smuggled these palms out of China in 1849 and provided them to the Kew Horticultural Gardens in England, where it has been given the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

In the landscape, the Windmill Palm can be planted as a single palm or can be installed in mass for a bolder impact. It is often Windmill Palm trunk grown in groups of three or more, as a substitute for the decorative

Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis). It makes a good street tree and is a lovely addition to any palm garden.

Windmill Palm grows well with full sun to partial shade.

It prefers well drained loam soil. It can survive drought but, understandably, is much more attractive with some irrigation during the dry season. Its seeds germinate easily - within about three months. A cultivar, ‘Wagnerianus,’ is a slower-growing variety that is semi-dwarf - it reaches a maximum of only 15 feet tall and bears fronds less than 18 inches long; the smaller size makes it less susceptible to wind damage.

Many examples of mature Windmill Palms can be seen in Santa Barbara: on Haley Street from Chapala Street to Milpas Street; on the first block of North Windmill Palm Trachycarpus fortunei Nopal Street; on the single block of Lawrence Street; in East and West Alameda Parks; at the County Courthouse (100+year-old specimens); in the Shoreline Drive median at Harbor Way; on the campus of UCSB; and, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church (along the Anacapa Street side).

Plaza Granada and New Mural Revealed to Public REATIVELY HIGHLIGHTING THE POWER AND BEAUTY of the theater, a new performing arts-inspired mural has been unveiled as a part of the Granada Theatre’s new Plaza Granada.

Designed to enhance pedestrians’ access to and from State Street behind the theater, the project is the result of years of careful planning. Granada board members and other community donors raised close to $2 million for the plaza’s completion.

“We are thrilled to complete this project that not only provides functional space for the Granada Theater but offers a safe, well lighted public passageway that invites theater goers, visitors, and our entire community to experience our district’s exceptional dining, shopping, and the arts,” said Caren Rager, the Granada Theatre’s Chrisman Executive Director & President, at the plaza’s November 18th ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Spanning about 10,000 square feet, the plaza was the vision of Santa Barbara philanthropist Michael Towbes, who passed away in 2017. Led by project architects Brian Cearnal and Rogelio Solis of Cearnal Collective, with Derek Hansen from the Towbes Group acting as project development consultant and general contractor, the plaza has transformed the parking lot formerly located behind the Theatre.

In addition to featuring upgraded lighting and pavement, the plaza offers improved parking and dropoff areas for vehicles that will use the theater’s backstage entrance.

The project also worked to better organize parking and trash facilities for individuals working in Granada Tower and nearby business owners.

Santa Barbara Mayor Pro Tempore Oscar Gutierrez applauded the project for making the space more welcoming, speaking to the personal impact the Granada Theatre has had on his life.

“The Granada is a symbol of how beautiful and diverse and special our city is,” shared Gutierrez. “I remember specifically, growing up on the West Side, my friends and I. Our parents didn’t have the time or the money to take us to shows, but the Mural detail Granada brought our entire class to see South Pacific, and that was my first introduction to theater and music.”

the theater is clearly exhibited through the plaza’s most engaging element — an eight-foot-tall mural covering the wall bordering the plaza’s connection to State Street.

Created by Santa Barbara muralists Sayak Mitra and Tracy Lee Stum, as well as a team of volunteer artists, the vibrant mural depicts multiple scenes of figures practicing different dance styes, playing various instruments, and singing. The end result is a piece that represents the theater’s ability to simultaneously support individual expression and a shared, unifying experience.

Mitra, who designed the mural, explained that his background as an interdisciplinary artist inspired him to create an almost panoramic work that encompassed the breadth of the performing arts as an art form.

“I see things in a more dynamic way instead of as a freezed image,” said Mitra. “So that helped me to process a 360 degree mural that started in one place and ended in another place, but I could [connect it with] the celebration and the vivid stimulation people get from seeing the performing arts in-person, in life.”

The mural additionally includes stretches of negative space between its figures to encourage viewers to take photographs with it, contributing to the plaza’s welcoming atmosphere. Mitra also added design elements from within the Granada Theatre to share its beauty with all passing visitors.

“Santa Barbara is a cultural hub, people want to come here from Europe and Asia, but when they come, not everybody gets a chance to visit the Granada Theatre inside,” shared Mitra. “It’s larger than life and a spectacular thing.” www.granadasb.org
