Our Good Neighbors – SB Neighborhood Clinics

By Daisy Scott / VOICE
COMPASSIONATE RALLY TO PROVIDE QUALITY, AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE to all people has summoned the innovation and expertise of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics team – especially since the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying economic crisis. The team shared its progress and highlights of their ongoing projects during “Innovations in Healthcare: An Intimate Conversation” a conversation on November 10th. The Good Neighbors program, which increases community awareness of SBNC’s work and helps with fundraising efforts for SBNC’s costs that are not covered by insurance or grant funding was first up. “Being a good neighbor means that you have decided that it’s important enough for the health of our community that everyone in our community is healthy and has access to health — both physical and mental health — when they don’t have the ability to pay for it,” said Katina Zaninovich, one of Good Neighbors’ founders. Individuals can join Good Neighbors by pledging a minimum $1,000 annual donation, and will receive membership benefits such as event invitations. Dr. Charles Fenzi, CEO/CMO of SBNC followed Zaninovich with a presentation on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic both in our community and nationwide. He echoed the importance of approaching the issues our nation faces in a
bipartisan, unified manner. “Top on the list is getting the Coronavirus under control as a means to allow our economy to recover. The second extremely important problem this pandemic has laid bare is the disparity that exists in access to quality health care for people of color,” Fenzi noted in a statement following the event. “In order for us to begin to find solutions to these challenges, all sides must join together, engaging in honest and respectful debate and concentrating on solutions. Federally Qualified Health Centers, like SBNC, are uniquely positioned to be front and center in meeting this challenge, with its vision of providing high quality, comprehensive, affordable healthcare to everyone without regard for ability to pay.” Dr. Fenzi also presented SBNC’s plan to partner with Cottage Health’s Pediatric Residency program. Beginning in 2022, SBNC will provide outpatient clinic training to three pediatric residents each year. Given the current shortage of pediatricians in Santa Barbara, this plan comes at a muchneeded time for our community. SBNC was also recently awarded a grant of $500,000 to be a part of a state-funded Asthma Mitigation Project. Now, SBNC will be able to better educate patients on asthma, and make healthimproving changes to their homes. The grant focuses on uninsured and under-insured individuals, which will give many access to previously inaccessible care. Additionally, SBNC is moving to focus on older children and adults as a part of its Santa Barbara Resiliency Project. Since 2017, this study has screened pediatric patients for Adverse Childhood Experiences

(ACEs), including abuse and neglect, that would make them more prone to develop health issues due to consistent high levels of stress. Following answering an ACEs questionnaire, SBNC offers patients meetings with Wellness Navigators and clinic or home interventions if needed. To date 115 infants and their parents are enrolled in Resilience-Focused Interventions. The meeting ended with the acknowledgement that Healthy People Healthy Communities has reached 98 percent of its fundraising goal to build a new clinic on Micheltorena Street. The next step will be gaining approval from the Architectural Board of Review. Visit www.sbclinics.org to learn more about Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, or call 844-594-0343 for an appointment!

Located in Montecito’s San Ysidro Village, TF Design Montecito presents household accessories with a distinctly modern, minimalistic ambience. From bowls to furniture, each showcased item reflects the style of Tina Frey, owner of design company Tina Frey Designs. “I just really enjoy sculpting the pieces in clay before they’re molded and cast into the final pieces, and what I really like about the whole creative process is to be able to make something that’s got a human touch to it,” said Frey, adding that handprints appear on a lot of the pieces as a result of her brand’s process. “It’s a combination of the simplicity and the functionality that I really like in the end product, and that’s what drives me to make the Tina Frey pieces.” Frey founded Tina Frey Designs 13 years ago as what she refers to as a “creative endeavor.” After having worked in finance and accounting for about 15 years, she decided to take a chance on her inner call to be creative. Today, hers is a nationally-recognized brand. Frey shared that her opening the Montecito retail store was motivated by the area’s natural beauty and her desire to engage with the community amidst the pandemic’s preventing typical travel and communication. “It really was purely a combination of creativity and still connecting with my audience,” commented Frey. This Montecito location is the first to offer a comprehensive collection

from Tina Frey Designs. Customers will have the opportunity to explore accessories for every aspect of home living that are both beautiful and functional due to their food-safe, shatterproof resin composition. The store is also participating in the launch of Tina Frey Designs’ 2020 Fall Collection, which consists of its Paper Sized Platters and Meditation Seat designs. Based on international standard paper sheet dimensions, the Paper Sized Platters can be used for decor or serving. The Meditation Seat, resembling a bean shape, is designed to support an individual’s sit bones and promote active posture. It was directly inspired by Frey’s own experiences with meditation amidst the pandemic. Beyond these collections, TF Design Montecito will also offer a selection of furniture and art curated by Frey herself. Furniture items are designed by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel, and include her notable Chill Lounge Chair and Hanging Egg Chair pieces. Kate Holstein’s Ocean Series also adorns the store, with each piece embodying the ocean’s power and charm. TF Design Montecito is open Mondays - Saturdays 10am to 6pm, and Sundays 11am to 5pm at 525 San Ysidro Road, Building I. www.tinafreydesigns.com
Anja’s Boutique Anja’s Boutique brings an eclectic selection of one of a kind fashions to downtown Santa Barbara’s Paseo Nuevo. Inspired by the boutiques and styles of Europe, owner Anja Sosnicki has made it her mission to give local shoppers the chance to explore overseas fashions without leaving their hometown. “Three years ago I went to Poland, Anja Sosnicki where I’m from, and while visiting my favorite places like Kraków, Warsaw, and Gdańsk, I saw so many beautiful, unique pieces of clothing, jewelry, shoes,” shared Sosnicki. “And yes, this trip inspired me and I started to think about opening a little European style women fashion boutique in this nice area.” Sosnicki opened the first Anja’s Boutique location in Ventura Village Harbor about two and a half years ago. She has always been enchanted by women’s fashions, and has enjoyed exploring styles both across Europe and locally. She told herself that if her Ventura location was successful, she would continue her business endeavors, with Santa Barbara sitting atop her list of potential future locations. Her store’s opening in Paso Nuevo this November is a testament to both her dedication and knack for choosing popular European fashions. “In Anja’s Boutique we offer European style clothes, shoes, handbags, jewelry,” said Sosnicki. “Our customers are women who are searching for an elegant, unique, sophisticated look.” Anja’s Boutique offers a range of European brands, which are selected by Sosnicki herself. She explained that she works closely with a friend living in Poland, who travels across the country to view exhibits and fashion shows. Through these displays, Sosnicki and her friend are able to search for European artists and brands to feature in Anja’s Boutique locations. They also discover brands by visiting websites that are either promoted by individual artists or fellow fashion companies. Currently, the Paseo Nuevo location offers two brands of clothing, Eco Leinen and Zele. Both of these brands predominantly specialize in linen items, however there are a handful of fashions made from cotton and viscose. The store also offers leather shoes crafted by the brands PASO a PASO and Baldowski. Beyond clothes and shoes, customers also have the chance to accessorize their outfits with a diverse array of purses and handmade jewelry.

Community Environmental Council Named 2020 Nonprofit of the Year
I
N RECOGNITION OF ITS DECADES OF DEDICATION AND POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY, District 37 Assemblywoman Monique Limón has named the Community Environmental Council the 2020 California Nonprofit of the year. “For 50 years, CEC has stood out as an environmental leader, both in Santa Barbara County and across California,” said Assemblywoman Monique Limón. “They understand that issues like the climate crisis are too complex and too big to be solved by a single organization and work collaboratively to treat a healthy environment as both a human right and the foundation for a thriving world.” The California Nonprofit of the Year awards are presented by State Senators and Assemblymembers to nonprofits worthy of recognition and celebration in their districts. CEC’s work in 2020 is certainly deserving of this honor, having led advocacy to ensure the City of Santa Barbara’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2035. CEC also saved more than 170,000
pounds of food from being wasted by distributing it among individuals in need, worked to provide 1,395,401 residents across two counties with renewable-sourced electricity, and helped seven nonprofits get new solar panels. The organization also reached more than 49,000 individuals through webinars and online outreach efforts to inform them on home solar, lowcost electric vehicles, and more. “The award comes during CEC’s 50th anniversary year, underscoring that our work is more critical to the community than ever,” said Sigrid Wright, the CEO of CEC. “In the face of many uncertainties, we know that ultimately leadership must come from regions like ours committing to rapid and equitable local climate action. That’s why we are throwing everything we have into meeting transformative climate goals — for transportation, renewable energy, organic waste, and nature-based carbon farming.” To learn more about the Community Environmental Council, visit www.cecsb.org.
Santa Barbara Zoo Begins Constructing Australian Walkabout
T
HIS SUMMER, the Santa Barbara Zoo will invite visitors to take a walk on the wild side with the opening of its Australian Walkabout. Construction on this latest zoo exhibit began last week and will feature a 15,000 square foot habitat for kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and native birds. Through this exhibit, the Santa Barbara Zoo hopes to offer visitors a “down under” adventure that promotes conservation and greater awareness for Australia’s unique wildlife. “The recent megafires in Australia devastated enormous swaths of unique habitat and displaced or cost the lives of an estimated almost three billion animals which include native mammals, birds, reptiles, and frogs,” said Dr. Julie Barnes, who is Australian herself and the Vice President of Animal Care & Health of the Santa Barbara Zoo. “While the full extent of the long-term impact on the country’s biodiversity as a result of these devastating bushfires is unknown, there is no doubt that many native species are at increased risk of extinction or becoming threatened due to habitat loss. This new exhibit will do more than connect people with unique wildlife, it also represents an ongoing connection between our community and dedicated conservation efforts in Australia.” The Australian Walkabout will be constructed in the zoo’s former Asian elephant exhibit. Its design will feature open pathways and gorgeous landscapes that will offer visitors an immersive experience while viewing Bennett’s wallabies, Western
grey kangaroos, and emus. There will also be two aviaries adjoining the exhibit, which will house three native Australian bird species: the tawny frogmouth, the kookaburra, and the sulphur-crested cockatoo. The Santa Barbara Zoo is also working with a representative from the Aboriginal nations to include information about Aboriginal culture and language into the Australian Walkabout exhibit. Visitors will also have the chance to learn more about Australian wildlife and conservation efforts. At this time, the Santa Barbara Zoo is continuing its fundraising efforts for the Australian Walkabout. To donate, or learn more about the zoo and its ongoing programs, visit www.sbzoo.org.
Applications Open for Community Formation Commission
Commission will Explore Civilian Police Review and Accountability System for SBPD
D
O YOU WANT TO CONTRIBUTE to the formation of a civilian police review system for the Santa Barbara Police Department? If so, be sure to apply to the City of Santa Barbara’s Community Formation Commission (CFC) by December 4th. Established by the City Council, the CFC will be responsible for guiding the creation of a civilian review system that will work to secure accountability and transparency within the SBPD. The CFC will consist of 13 individuals who are representative of the city’s larger community and from diverse backgrounds. Members will be responsible for researching different civilian police review systems, as well as new and existing police accountability systems. The CFC will also be responsible for exploring the specific needs of Santa Barbara’s communities, and review the SBPD’s current standards and protocols. “Following its examination of these issues within the context of Santa Barbara’s specific needs and systems, the CFC will make recommendations to the City Council for creation of a civilian oversight system in Santa Barbara,” explains the city’s call for
applicants. CFC members will be paid a stipend of $50 for each meeting attended, and be expected to give a time commitment of four to twenty hours a month. Membership terms are due to last about one year, with meetings taking place on a monthly basis with additional sessions added as needed. In terms of qualifications, the city has announced it is looking for individuals with “either personal or professional experience, or both, that will garner the confidence and trust of the Santa Barbara community, including: relevant lived experience, demonstrated community standing, and relevant academic research or professional experience.” Upon selection, CFC members will receive required ethics training, as well as additional training in police practices and community policing options and needs. Applications are due by December 4th. Interviews will take place on January 12th and 26th. To apply or learn more, visit www.santabarbaraca.gov/gov/brdcomm/ac/cfc/default.asp.

Poetic
VOICE A Letter From Tom Hennen By Richard Jarrette / Special to VOICE
The hoot Of the owl Is large enough To carry off a whole sheep. St. Paul, MN Thunderstorms on the way later today & tonight. Dear Richard,
The real treasure is poetry itself and a few letters. Tom Hennen might have been completely invisible but Robert Bly became his champion and publisher. Hennen is very much like Olav Hauge in Norway who spent his entire life farming three acres of apples writing poems in ancient Norwegian dialect versus Danish based Bokmål of the intelligentsia. But in old age his grasp made him renowned, also with the help of Robert Bly and his Guggenheim grant to translate Norwegian and Swedish poets. Hennen’s Darkness Sticks to Everything: Collected and New Poems (Copper Canyon, 2013), is priceless—a handful of the poems grace this column, evocative of Ted Kooser, Barry Spacks, and the ancient Chinese. His book earned both an introduction by Jim Harrison and an afterword essay by Thomas R. Smith. Harrison always said, “I have followed the work of no other poet with greater pleasure and fidelity.” After a Long Trip
Tom Hennen
Thank you for the book. It was good to meet you when you were in Minnesota. I’m saving money to buy a mule eventually, maybe to ride in my old age out in western Minnesota, South Dakota, and points west. Or maybe just a 1950 Massey-Harris tractor. But a good mule . . . I know of some hunters far out in the prairie who brought a couple of well trained critters up from Arkansas or Missouri. I hope this finds you—I’m not sure of the address but pretty sure.
The river is going to the Gulf of Mexico. The moon on top of the water Doesn’t move. Its not interested in a Trip to New Orleans. Its light is already tired from traveling 250,000 miles To shine on some trees.

On these autumn days when even the sunshine is cold, I feel happily lonesome as the wild bee that comes looking for one last flower before the snow. With impeccable comic timing, Dan Gerber turned to our great sister poet Ellen Doré Watson and so innocently said, “Well, you know, Richard had very modest aspirations for his first book, maybe 5,000 in sales.” They actually did fall out of their chairs howling with laughter and I chuckled, red faced, my ego buried way down there. I learned. The poets I admire so are all modest, humble, and self-deprecating—with good reason. The fully engaged path of poetry is like a religious calling, one takes the monk-vow of anonymity and poverty. “Keep your day job,” Gerber advised, “just write for a few people who might understand what you’re trying to do, the rest will take care of itself. If you’re lucky to write a book that’s any good, you’ll sell about 500.”
Hennen has known death, poverty, unemployment, once injured and forced to live with his daughter and serve as nanny to his grandkids. He’s been a wildlife technician for the State of South Dakota, worked the many odd jobs available in high prairie farm country.
Robert Bly said, “One of the most charming things about Tom Hennen’s poems is his strange ability to bring immense amounts of space, often uninhabited space, into his mind and so into the whole poem.”
Like Francis Ponge, Robert Bly, and Louis Jenkins, Hennen is a master of the prose poem, “a formal poem with unspecified limits.” Thomas R. Smith writes, “Crawling Out The Window (1997) is one of the greatest collections of prose poems written by an American.” The poems are generously included in the Copper Canyon volume. Outside Work

Recognizing, Honoring, and Managing our Grief over this Holiday Season is More Important than Ever By David Selberg, CEO Hospice of SB

HOPE THAT YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND FRIENDS have found a meaningful way to celebrate this Thanksgiving week safely, even if that means celebrating apart. Separation from those we love during the holidays is particularly difficult and it’s often the one time of the year many of us can see one another. This too shall pass, and I am confident that, with a bit more patience, this strange year will transition into better times for all of us. This is the time of year that we at Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) gear up for the holidays, which can be a somber time for many who have recently lost a loved one. This year with the COVID-19, grief and loss is already built in with other complicated feelings and emotions. More than ever, it will be a struggle for all of us as we decide how to move through the next month or so into 2021. It will be all the more painful and challenging for those who are deeply grieving the loss of someone they love. There are some important tips that we provide both to our clients and to the community each year to help navigate feelings of grief and loss during the holidays. These tips are particularly relevant this year. As much as you are able, keep connected with friends and family. Isolation has David Selberg, been made particularly easy during the era of COVID. CEO Hospice of SB Remember that not everyone grieves the same way – it’s ok to be happy if you are feeling happy, sad if you are feeling sad. There is no wrong way to grieve and it is often a rollercoaster ride of emotions. • Ask for what you need. Say no to things you would rather not do. • Think about what the holidays will be like without your loved one ahead of time to prepare. • Do something different this year. Don’t feel pressured to repeat traditions of the past. • Do something special in memory of your loved one. • Attend a grief support group or workshop. Contact Hospice of Santa Barbara for a schedule. As you know, each year HSB brings the communities of Goleta, Santa Barbara, Montecito, and Carpinteria together for Light Up A Life. We felt it is extremely important to continue Light up A Life this year so, due to the ongoing pandemic, Hospice will be bringing Light Up A Life into the comfort of your home. It is an opportunity for all of us to join together as communities unite for one heartwarming virtual ceremony to remember and honor the many that are missed this holiday season. This year, HSB will hold our traditional celebration of reflection, special speakers, poetry, musical entertainment, and the lighting of their Tree of Remembrance, online via Zoom with an event featuring emcee Catherine Remak, LIVE on Wednesday, December 16th from 6 to 7pm PDT. In addition to our online virtual event, HSB is giving the community an opportunity to dedicate a star on their virtual Tree of Remembrance. For a minimum donation of $15, folks can showcase an online star(s) with their loved one’s name, photo, and a special message. Actual trees will still be displayed at each of the four locations. HSB will place traditional paper stars, for each digital star purchased, on the location of the purchaser’s choice (Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta, and Montecito). Light Up a Life has become an important tradition for so many in our communities that we felt we needed to make sure that it continued to happen this year. Although we are not able to hold our traditional in person events, we are still planning on making our online virtual event just as meaningful as we share in the remembrance of those we are missing this holiday season. HSB’s virtual event is free but registration is required. To learn more about the event or to dedicate a digital star on their virtual Tree of Remembrance, please visit: www.hospiceofsb.org

EconomicVOICE Retail Sales, Manufacturing Recovering (What’s Next)? By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE
R
ETAIL SALES JUMPED 5.1 PERCENT YEAR-OVER-YEAR IN OCTOBER, which means this recovery is much stronger than forecast. But the question for economists will be, can it continue with the ongoing winter COVID-19 surge? It’s incredible that consumers are spending so much when this winter season has just begun and the worst is yet to come. Higher home improvement/gardening, electronic, and online sales drove the increase. “The level of real consumer spending entered the fourth quarter well above the Q4 average, but this and other measures suggest that it is leveling out quickly,” said Reuters. Maybe the public is believing “Yes, we can” again with the looming approval of several COVID-19 vaccines? This is while U.S. manufacturing is also in partial recovery, with the Federal Reserve reporting that overall industrial production rose 1.1 percent. “Among the major industrial sectors, the biggest surprise was in motor vehicles and parts manufacturing, which was flat versus our forecast of a moderate increase,” said Reuters. “Other categories were close to expectations, with non-auto manufacturing up 1.1 percent, mining down 0.6 percent, and utilities up 3.9 percent.” But, it is still a tentative recovery with consumers holding back from spending at pre-pandemic levels, in part because only ten percent have

seen an improvement in their finances. It’s become evident that income/wealth inequality has only worsened and will damage any recovery unless something is done about it. Some economists are beginning to fear a second recession may be looming, with the rising coronavirus death toll. While the U.S. makes up four percent of the world’s population, it has had 20 percent of all COVID-19 cases. As of last Wednesday, the U.S. had reported eleven million coronavirus cases and 248,687 COVID-19-related deaths, just ahead of India (8.9 million cases to date), according to Johns Hopkins University. Economist James K. Galbraith said recently in Project Syndicate, “As for the economic effects, the U.S. has experienced the partial rebound I predicted in March. But I believe now, as then, that this will be followed by a long struggle, for three fundamental reasons, beyond the pandemic itself. First, there is the collapse in global investment, which affects the economy’s advanced sectors. Second, the impulse to save in the face of economic anxiety will devastate services providers, and the jobs and incomes they provide, affecting millions of workers. And, third, unpayable debts are piling up, affecting the entire system.” What can get us out of a possible second recession? “Progressives should ignore the tired chatter about ‘excessive’ deficits and public debt,” said Professor Galbraith, “and, to tackle inequality, they should vote to increase the top income tax rates and restore the bite of the estate and gift taxes.” I agree with him—because the wealthiest have not been using their tax savings from the Republicans’ 2017 tax cuts in any way that would boost anything but their stock price, whereas returning some of the 2007 tax cut could finance some very necessary recovery spending. Tackling the record income inequality will also cure some of the discontent that has brought out unhappy populists in the Midwest and South that supported Trump. They are mainly in those red states that have suffered most from job losses, and now the pandemic. By Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate
E HAVE LOTS OF POETS who would enjoy being described as “a poet first, and a (fill in the job) second,” as if for them writing poems is the most important thing in their lives. As I see it, Patricia Frolander is, instead, a widowed Wyoming ranch manager, a loving mother and grandmother first, and a poet, second. I like those priorities. Here’s a poem about the loss of her rancher husband of many years. It’s from her book Second Wind, from High Plains Press.

You must be here for you love the fullness of a crop. Yards farther, I call again. The hawk above must wonder at the trails through the field. Did you leave with the winnowing scythe, the burning heat of August? For some good reason, I cannot find you here, amid the nightly dreams and tear-damp pillow. Thanksgiving Blessings...
C
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE
AN YOU BELIEVE IT? It’s already Thanksgiving weekend! Going over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house might have been cut just a little short this year, with family gatherings looking a lot like an episode of Hollywood Squares. It’s not the same, sadly, in an unfamiliar world that requires distancing ourselves from those we love and the friendships that nurture us. As the sun made its way towards the horizon near the end of a beautiful day this week, the sky was beginning to don its orange red glow highlighting a long, long stretch of blue water between the beach and the shadow of the distant Channel Islands. Looking at the vast expanse of the sea, I was overcome by a sense of calm. Suddenly everything that was of concern at that moment simply … vaporized. Why is it that we humans are drawn to the ocean? We certainly don’t have fins or flippers. Nonetheless, we seem to find our way to water … oceans, lakes, spas, even swimming pools connect with it’s power to inspire relaxation and rejuvenation. The excitement of diving into water would seem to create an adrenaline rush, but actually, the opposite is true. Emerging oneself in
water (ok ... my bathtub, as an example) slows the heartbeat, lowers blood pressure, and the body’s ‘fight or flight’ defense mechanism is dialed down to undetectable. Emersion in water is currently used as therapy for a variety of physical and psychological issues, but that’s an example of how everything old is new again. Which was known by the ancients thousands of years ago! For this week’s column I snapped a few pictures loaded with good wishes to share with you in honor of Mother Nature’s beautiful coastline. We may be deprived of our usual routines, and sometimes feel isolated from family and friends due to the COVID crisis, but Mother Nature is always available and waiting, no appointment needed...perhaps the best therapist possible during these uncertain times. I wish you all a good and grateful Thanksgiving weekend enjoying the wonders of our world... a quiet walk on the beach, a visit to the Lagoon, flying above the strand, walking on the breakwater, biking along the waterfront, and if you’re lucky, time with family or friends. Or Zooming with everyone else on the planet. Keep the Pepto handy though, that turkey has a way of fighting back. Photos by Sigrid Toye

Opinion An open letter to our community from Masked and Mighty Coalition Members:
• Units: (4) 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartments
This week kicks off the fall and winter holiday season, amidst a doubling of COVID-19 case numbers across Santa Barbara County. This alarming trend is also reflected nationally and globally. As healthcare workers on the front lines and as educators eager to see students back in the classroom, we are making a sincere plea to all residents to follow public health recommendations and help keep our community safe. Like many of you, we are sad about the impact this pandemic will have on our traditional holiday gatherings with family and friends. We understand how difficult it is, after an already tough nine months, to request that everyone forgo travel and avoid celebrations with people who do not live in their immediate household. We do know that asking all out-of-town visitors and any residents who traveled outof-state to quarantine for two weeks upon their return is inconvenient, but essential to our community health. We also know that it might be tempting to use a negative test result to rationalize travel or attend a gathering, but this approach is not recommended since the incubation period for COVID-19 lasts for up to 14 days. It is very possible to test negative for COVID-19, experience no symptoms, still harbor the virus, and be able to transmit it to a loved one. A serious, renewed commitment to mask-wearing and social distancing needs to occur immediately in order to stop the current surge and bend the curve again. Something has to change or our schools may not be able to open, businesses will continue to suffer, and we risk the health of our most vulnerable community members. While our hospital systems prepared well for large outbreaks earlier this year, we do not want to see a tidal wave of sick patients overwhelm our health systems due to a surge that we could have prevented. These exact scenarios are playing out across the country, but it doesn’t have to be that way here. Through the fires and mudflows, we saw the great capacity of our community to pull together, help one another, and remain resilient in the face of challenges that at times seemed unsurmountable. Unlike those events which happened without warning, this pandemic is not a riddle still unsolved. We now know how to decrease the spread of this virus and a determined effort by all of us will make a difference. We are asking you personally to join us in making these hard choices, and hopefully preserving the good health of our friends, family, and loved ones to enjoy many more holiday seasons together.

Sorry, they won’t be offering any of their Piscasso’s Elf by regular cider and treats! Adria Abraham “GVAA has adapted to 2020,” shared longtime member Terre Martin Sanitate of the groups evolution in the time of COVID-19. “We are taking care of our members and continue to bring art to the community! In April GVAA was one of the first associations to launch a virtual art show. Paula Gregoire-Jones created our online show featuring 150 paintings by 50 members... In addition, Jan Smith organized a monthly Zoom call for members to visit and share coping with quarantine... Betty White further developed an already stellar monthly newsletter. It became our own art gallery with artists sharing insights into their work, a technique filled resource, and a link to global online art experiences.” The group also offered two Zoom workshops by Carissa Luminess including “Bringing New Life to Old Paintings” “Art Biz.” According to Sanitate, this was all possible because of the leadership of the group’s leader, Elizabeth Una Flanagan and a creative board. Now GVAA is offering Picassos for Peanuts, a unique exhibition to the community - a chance to enjoy artwork, add to or begin a collection, and support local artists. HAT AN INTERESTING AND CHALLENGING WEEK IT HAS BEEN. No, no... I’m not talking about politics. I am talking about art that I have seen or read about in the last few days. When I learned about the upcoming major solo exhibition by well-known LA artist, Alison Saar (b. 1956), presented by two Southern California cultural institutions, I made a mark in my calendar Bitter Crop, 2018 by Allison Saar. Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College for the opening of the exhibition on September 1st. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic the opening never happened. Both institutions, along with other California museums continue to be closed...hmm... until safer and better times. So, I tried to be patient. But then, I read the glowing review for Saar’s 25-foot-long model of shark from 1975 famous film Jaws being exhibition in The New York Times and realized that maybe I should also installed at the Academy Museum Foundation try my luck and hopefully get permission to have a tour. And I got lucky! Rebecca McGrew, Senior Curator of Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, invited me to see the exhibition and gave me wonderful insights into Alison Saar’s work. We started at the courtyard, looking at the impressive 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture, Imbue, commissioned by the Benton Museum for the entrance to its new building. Inside, two major gallery spaces were filled with carefully selected sculptures, paintings, and prints made by Saar. All of them, having one major subject in common – an imposing image of an African American woman – mostly naked, and looking at you with so much authority, that it makes you stare back with full attention and respect. The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, which has been chosen to host the second part of Saar’s exhibition, has delayed its opening until next year. Last week, I was talking about the sculptural exhibition by Simon Ouwerkerk at the Manhattan Beach Art Center. It was a cultural event which was only Edward Goldman and Rebecca McGrew, Senior available for virtual viewing online, but in a totally unusual arrangement, the Curator of Benton Museum of Art in front of Alison Saar’s Breach (2016) Center announced that it will be moving all of Ouwerkerk’s metal sculptures Farewell, Office Holiday Parties by Alex Prager. LACMA outside for only one day in November, and one day in December. That was a hell of a creative endeavor which I went to see last Saturday. I give the artist and Manhattan Beach Art Center a high five for thinking outside of the box. Now my friends, take a look at the photo of this huge 25-foot-long shark, swimming toward you and ready to swallow poor you in one gulp. This is a model from the famous 1975 film Jaws, and it’s been installed at The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is scheduled to open in April next year. Meanwhile, here is the latest from nearby LACMA, which after months of being closed, made an announcement about the re-opening of its Ray’s and Stark Bar over the last weekend. On the same day, the museum unveiled an outdoor installation by LA artist Alex Prager (b. 1979) entitled Farewell, Office Holiday Parties. Prager is known as a photographer and filmmaker, but here she used the most advanced technology to photograph the actors via Zoom and then made through 3-D printing life-size sculptures of them. From a distance, these fifteen people look confusingly real and life-like. But the closer I approached them, I Alison Saar’s Imbue outside of Benton Museum of Art found this holiday party so banal, so boring. This installation by Prager will be on display until January 3rd. If you approach Chris Burden’s Urban Light installation, from Wilshire Boulevard, to the left of it you will encounter a new 25-foot-tall bronze sculpture by Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959), one of the well-known contemporary Japanese artists. This Miss Forest (LACMA Version) by Yoshitomo sculpture was recently acquired by LACMA, thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous Nara, 2020, LACMA, Yoshitomo Nara, 2020, donor. To be completely honest, I am a little bit surprised by the placement of this art © Yoshitomo Nara sculpture so close to one of the best and most famous works by Chris Burden. I don’t think that Nara, as an artist, is in the same league with Burden... Believe it or not, I want to finish today’s newsletter with surprisingly positive news coming from the White House. Yes, you’ve heard me right. First Lady Melania Trump unveiled a bronze sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) smartly installed in the Rose Garden. This 1962 sculpture was selected by the First Lady and was purchased Simon Ouwerkerk with his sculptures outside Manhattan Beach in March by the White House Art Center Historical Society at Sotheby’s auction for $125,000. So, our thanks to the First Lady, for this Edward Goldman was art critic and host of “Art Talk,” a weekly surprising and unexpected program which aired prime-time Tuesday evenings during All Things art addition to the national Considered on LA’s largest NPR affiliate, KCRW 89.9 FM, for more Discover more Art Matters collection.
