The free virtual event takes place Wednesday, December 15th, at 6pm. To attend, register at www.hospiceofsb.org
RINGING THE COMMUNITIES OF GOLETA, SANTA BARBARA, MONTECITO, AND CARPINTERIA TOGETHER each year, Hospice of Santa Barbara will again host Light Up a Life! In this 38th year of the community celebration, as was last year, the event will be held virtually on December 15th from 6 to 7pm. “Light Up a Life is such an important tradition we have every year where we continue to share our memories of those we miss,” noted David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB). The holiday season can stir up a range of emotions, including joy, stress, sadness, and everything in between. For those preparing to navigate the holiday season without cherished loved ones, this time of year can be even more difficult and Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) honors them every year with Light Up a Life. Light Up A Life is an opportunity for all to join together as communities unite for one heartwarming virtual ceremony to remember and honor the many that are missed this holiday season.
This year, HSB will hold their traditional celebration of reflection, special speakers, poetry, musical entertainment, and the lighting of their Tree of Remembrance to honor the many that are missed, online via Zoom featuring event emcee Rev. Julia Hamilton. “Although we are not going to hold our traditional in-person events, this year’s online virtual event will be just as meaningful,” Selberg added. “We hope you join us and dedicate a star to a loved one on our wonderful Virtual Tree of Remembrance.” In addition to the online virtual event, HSB is giving the community an opportunity to
dedicate a star on their Virtual Tree of Remembrance. For a donation, folks can dedicate a digital star(s) with their loved one’s name, photo, and a special message.
Make a $15 donation for a digital star in memory of a loved one:
Live trees will also be displayed at each of the four locations: Goleta, Santa Barbara, Montecito, and Carpinteria. HSB will create traditional paper stars for each digital star donated and place them on the tree at the location of the purchaser’s choice.
This year, you can dedicate a star on the Hospice Virtual Tree of Remembrance. Star(s) may feature your loved one’s name, photo, and a special message from you.
HSB’s virtual event is free to attend, but registration is required. To register for the free event and/or to dedicate a digital star on their Virtual Tree of Remembrance, please visit: http://www.hospiceofsb.org/lual
2. Select “Shine a light” or “Dedicate a star” on the Tree of Remembrance.
1. To begin, click on the “DONATE” button on the website.
3. Select the location of your star or light and proceed to dedicate the star or light in honor of your loved one. 4. You are able to select an image of your loved one, write a special message, and select the color of your star. 5. At checkout, you will be asked which Tree of Remembrance you would like your paper star to be hung (Santa Barbara, Montecito, Carpinteria, or Goleta).
Hospice of Santa Barbara provides professional counseling, support groups, and patient care services free of charge to individuals and families who are grieving the death of a loved one or experiencing the impact of a life-threatening illness. Hospice of Santa Barbara also provides counseling in our offices and on fifteen local junior and high school campuses to children and teens who are grieving the loss of a loved one. First Case Discovered In California
COVID Variant Omicron Raises National Alarm
COMMUNITY NEWS
Cottage Health Board Welcomes Bhupi Singh
P
OSING A “VERY HIGH” RISK WORLDWIDE, a new variant of COVID-19 called Omicron has emerged from South Africa with the first U.S. case appearing in California, according to the Center for Disease Control. Omicron has raised an array of questions, new restrictions, and a look at the effectiveness of vaccinations and their boosters, with President Biden warning the nation on Monday: “Let me repeat what the doctors and scientists have affirmed. The best protection against Omicron is getting a booster shot. Right now, about 135 million Americans are eligible for a booster, but only about 40 million have gotten one thus far,” stated President Biden on Monday. “If you’re over 18 years of age, you got vaccinated before... June 1, go get your booster shot today.” While the variant has been designated as a concern by the World Health Organization, it is not clear what its impact will be and a coordinated effort to understand it is taking place with researchers from around the world. The WHO released this statement, “Omicron has an unprecedented number of spike mutations, some of which are concerning for their potential impact on the trajectory of the pandemic.” The new variant emerged from Botswana and South Africa last week, where the vaccination rate is less than a quarter of their populations. First U.S. Omicron Case was identified in a person in California. The CDC said the person infected with the new COVID-19 variant had returned to the U.S. from a trip to South Africa on November 22nd, and that all of their known contacts have tested negative for Omicron. CDC recommends that everyone five years and older protect themselves from COVID-19 by getting fully vaccinated. Santa Barbara County has seen 549 COVID related deaths with 25 new cases reported this week. In related COVID-19 news, LeBron James tested positive for COVID-19 and will be out of play indefinitely under NBA’s COVID Protocols. The Lakers star, who said he is fully vaccinated, could be out at least ten days under the League’s www.publichealthsbc.org pandemic rules.

O PROMOTE COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF THE DANGERS OF FENTANYL, Santa Barbara-based business Idea Engineering has launched a new public health Turn-Key Campaign titled “Fentanyl is Forever.” Currently, the nation is experiencing an increase in overdose deaths, including deaths attributed to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid painkiller that is up to a hundred times more powerful than morphine. The campaign, which features five brief stories that offer insight into fentanyl’s impacts, highlights how the drug can be hidden in any street drug and can cause a fatal overdose. Ultimately, it aims to link people in need to resources and improve awareness of its dangers and presence. “We’ve worked with numerous counties on their prevention efforts over the years,” said Idea Engineering CEO, Simon Dixon, “What became obvious is that small counties and cities just do not have the staff or budget for well-crafted, comprehensive prevention campaigns and even large counties can need months to pull together a campaign for an immediate, critical issue. Now, with the ability to license and use a pre-developed campaign, localized specifically for their communities, all counties, cities, and other community organizations can afford the same high-level outreach, and have it implemented within weeks of approval. The campaign is now available to be licensed and utilized by communities, with campaigns available in English and Spanish. Altogether, campaigns consist of a website, public service announcements, and digital and print ads. To learn more visit www.fentanylisforever.org

People’s Self-Help Housing Awarded $5,000
T
NDIVIDUALS SEARCHING FOR A NEW CAREER THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF OTHERS are invited to apply for the open positions available with the Mental Wellness Center. Recently, the organization was awarded a $500,000 Peer Workforce Investment grant by the Department of Health Care Services to expand its ability to hire Wellness and Recovery Coaches. There are also open positions available for a Development & Marketing Associate and a Family Advocate on the organization’s website. “People are often surprised to learn that you don’t need to be a mental health professional to work at the Mental Wellness Center and that they may be uniquely qualified to join our team,” shared Annmarie Cameron, Mental Wellness Center CEO. “Because the Mental Wellness Center does not provide clinical treatment, staff are often hired with little or no previous experience and receive training on the job with supervision of experienced managers. The most essential qualification is the desire to support others on their mental wellness journey.”
HANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF MINER’S ACE HARDWARE, People’s Self-Help Housing has received $5,000 to support its Camino Scholars Education program. With this funding, PSHH will be able to purchase 12 new computers for students at the organization’s site-based learning center at Riverview Townhomes in Guadalupe, CA. “We are overjoyed to receive such a generous donation from Miner’s Ace Hardware!” said Joanna Dominguez, PSHH Director of Education. “With all the changes to education this pandemic has brought to our students, the additional chrome books will serve as a key tool for making sure our students continue to excel academically. When working with underserved students who lack the resources more affluent students benefit from, every dollar counts. This gift makes a world of impact for our youngest residents. During the past year, we have unfortunately lost vital funding in Guadalupe, so the need for financial sponsors and donation of supplies is greater than ever.” PSHH’s Camino Scholars program serves more than 400 students each year across the Central Coast, working to improve literacy and math skills as well as prepare college-bound students through application assistance, career workshops, campus visits, financial aid navigation, and more. Miner’s Ace Hardware is a locally-based, family owned and operated store with nine locations in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. This grant helped PSHH to replace outdated computer equipment at its learning center, which students can use for free to complete assignments, engage in virtual learning, and apply for college.

For many locals, it’s not the holiday season until the Santa Barbara Harbor lights up with decorated watercraft for the annual Parade of Lights. This year, the 35th Annual Parade of Lights will begin at 5:30pm, Sunday, December 12th, with a fireworks show to end the night. Leading up to the parade, a special Winter Wonderland with elves, snow, and holiday music will be set up on the City Pier and along the harbor at noon. There will also be a holiday tree lighting ceremony on Stearns Wharf at 5pm. Attendance is free, with the parade being viewable along the harbor and Stearns Wharf.

and expansive feeling for coaxing musical mysteries without strict genre borders. The instrumental outing comes replete with well-placed raindrop ambient sounds in the periphery. We last caught her in the 805 only two years ago (although it seems much longer, in COVID-confused time), when she appeared in solo mode at SOhO. She was booked through the auspices of Alec Beloin and his company smart alec, also co-presenting next week’s show. Her upcoming Lobero debut seems poetically proper, as a room blessed with good vibes and “extended living room” attributes. Bring your own inner rainfall soundtrack. Tonight, December 3rd, the Lobero plays host to a very different kind of singer-songwriter-charisma dispenser, Brett Dennen, a tall drink of musical water. On the album’s opening title track, Dennen the still-new father, slyly winks at Bob Dylan in the course of a typically positive song: “Where you going, my brown-eyed son/you used to crawl and now you run… Days go by/get out and see the world with your own eyes.” Dennen, whose skill as a songwriter has led him to write songs with more nuance and interpretive flexibility, could be addressing his offspring, or adding another positivityspinning notion into the universe.
To See And Hear,
Yuletide Time: Although the pandemic has messed with our sense of time – days of the week, seasonal groundings, and more – there’s no mystery about where we sit in the annual calendar. It’s more than beginning to look and sound like Christmas, courtesy of the annual yuletide musical atmosphere, wherever you go and listen. This weekend also features a continuation of Christmas concert/ show programming, in theaters near us. On Saturday and Sunday, the Granada Theater hosts the popular Westmont Christmas Festival for the first time, after years landing at the First Presbyterian Church. This 17th annual affair features the Westmont Orchestra, conducted by soon-to-retire Michael Shasberger, the Westmont College Choir and Chamber Singers, and the Westmont Choral Union. Over at the Lobero, Sunday afternoon belongs to An Irish Christmas, featuring World Champion Dancers Tyler Schwartz and Emily MacConnell.
Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

Holiday Performances Spread Cheer
A
By Daisy Scott / VOICE
S STATE STREET AND NEIGHBORHOODS ALL OVER SANTA BARBARA LIGHT UP WITH THE SIGNS OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON, so will local theaters illuminate with familiar festive performances this December. From breathtaking pirouettes and the stirring music of Tchaikovsky, to the soaring vocals of The Messiah, each event speaks to our community’s talent and passion. Whether you’ve previously attended these events or you’re establishing a new tradition with your family this year, here are six productions to remind you that there’s no place like our hometown for the holidays.
Gustafson Dance: Rudolph
Where would Santa — and Christmas — be without Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer? Immortalized by songs and cartoons, Gustafson Dance and the State Street Ballet Young Dancers will present this well-loved tale of an unlikely hero in dance at the Lobero Theatre. Performed by students between two and eighteen years old, Robert L. May’s original story will experience new life as audience members journey to the North Pole and the Island of Misfit Toys. Regardless if you know a child performing or if you’re searching for a family-friendly way to welcome the season, Gustafson Dance’s Rudolph is a heartwarming opportunity to appreciate the skill of Santa Barbara’s young dancers.
Chesnokov’s Salvation is Created to narrations for the season, and the thrilling concluding setting of O Holy Night,” shared Michael Shasberger, Westmont’s Adams professor of music and worship, who created the Christmas Festival and has directed it for 17 years. As Shasberger will retire next year, this Christmas Festival holds special significance for regular attendees as well as Shasberger himself. Emma Matthews as This is the first year the event will be held at Clara with the the Granada Theatre, offering audience members State Street a special venue to enjoy the Westmont Orchestra, Ballet joined by the gifted voices of the Westmont College Choir, Westmont Chamber Singers, and the Westmont Choral Union. 7pm, Saturday, December 4th and 3pm, Sunday, December 5th. SB Festival Ballet: The Nutcracker

Nothing compares to watching the Arlington Theatre’s curtains rise to reveal a wintry landscape overtaken by graceful ballerinas. Now, audiences can anticipate this timeless sense of wonder again as the Santa Barbara Festival Ballet performs The Nutcracker. The Sinking and Rediscovery of the McCulloch
Crew of the McCulloch
S
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE
OMETIMES IN THE EVENINGS SITTING AT THE BEACH WATCHING THE SUN SLOWLY SINK BENEATH THE HORIZON IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT ANYTHING ELSE EXISTS. Once in a while though, a pod of dolphins can be seen playing offshore or guiding mariners back to the harbor, a reminder that an entire universe exists beneath the surface. Thinking of life in that mysterious domain I can imagine multitudes of creatures who live there, some known and others not. Stories involving human drama are also hidden in the darkness of the deep. How many fascinating secrets still exist beneath the surface with stories waiting to be told? The sinking of the USCG (United States Coast Guard) Cutter McCulloch in 1917 was one, a sad tale whose secret lay on the ocean floor for over 100 years... not in an Ocean Far, Far Away but close to home, off Point Conception. Finally, in April 2021, over a century after the McCulloch’s sinking and her discovery in 2016, the McCulloch was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination to the register was a joint submission by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the U.S. Coast Guard. The National Register highlights the significance of the archaeological remains of the shipwreck, and McCulloch’s role in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy’s military history. Robert Schwemmer, West Coast Regional Maritime Heritage Coordinator for NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Santa Barbara Maritime Museum board member, was the chief archeologist on board the R/V (Research Vessel) Shearwater and, with members of the science team assisted by a remotely controlled VideoRay (a minisubmarine), discovered the remains of the Coast Guard Cutter McCulloch. The first view of the ship’s remains in October of 2016 completed the story of a proud ship and her tragic ending. The McCulloch was the largest cutter built in 1896 at a cost of $200,000 (a huge chunk of change at the time). She was known for her exploits world-wide and was equipped with a steam engine and three masts rigged with sails, and a cruising speed of 17 knots. The ship’s armament included four 6-pounder 3-inch rapid firing guns and one 15-inch torpedo tube. It was an example of the Coast Guard’s long-standing multi-missioned ventures from the Far East to the Suez Canal, participating in battles in the Spanish American War, and patrolling up the California coastline to Alaska. On a densely foggy morning in June of 1917, the SS Governor, a passenger ship, collided with the McCulloch near Point Conception and she disappeared below the surface in just 35
minutes. Ninety of the crew members were rescued by the Governor although one seriously injured crew member died three days later. Fortunately, the Governor suffered no casualties among her passengers and crew. “Standing in the lifeboats with heads bared, the McCulloch’s sailors wept as the cutter, stern in the air, quivered and sank,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported on June 14, 1917. “The famous old vessel lies on the bottom of the ocean, three miles off Point Conception.” On sighting the remains of the McCulloch through the lens of the VideoRay, Robert Schwemmer reminisced, “Seeing the flying bridge helm the steering station of the ship, you’re taken back in time. A cutterman at the helm attempting to find his way through the dense fog off Point Conception could not know that the bow of another ship would send the McCulloch to the seafloor within minutes.” This discovery must have been The McCulloch sinking more than just a scientific mission but an emotional one as well. “The listing to the National Register of Historic Places, as well as California’s Register of Historical Resources, demonstrates the spirit of cooperation between NOAA and the Coast Guard, enhances public awareness of McCulloch’s important role in America’s history, while honoring its crew,” confirmed Schwemmer who continues his archaeological work in behalf of NOAA. This epic saga of archeology and maritime lore leaves me awestruck, not only for the power of nature but for the resilience of man to reach through the dimensions of time and space to tell a story. The McCulloch lies where it sank on that fateful morning as a testament never to be forgotten. Sigrid Toye volunteers for the Breakwater Flag Project. Most of the perspectives are seen through the eyes of nine year old Buddy (played by Jude Hill), lending a universal quality to the story while showing some of the danger. The civil strife in Ireland reverberated into broader parts of the country and England. The factions were between Republicans and Nationalists including the IRA and the Protestant civilians.
In an onstage interview at the Riviera with the director and most of the key members of the cast for a screening sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, director Branagh stated, “I think our film responded to families living in unsettled times, as many families are living in kind of a Code Red era… and I had the opportunity of casting these great actors, each of whom brought their own personal experiences for the scenes.” He further remarked, “shooting in black and white gave us a poetic value and the black and white photography showed how these characters felt, influenced by great photographers as well as Hollywood movies.” The rest of the cast shared anecdotes about filming the scenes coming out of the pandemic with humor and gratefulness to each other. This is already one of the most celebrated films of the year and very well may be award-bound in the months to come as the 2021 cinema year concludes a most interesting season of post-pandemic produced movies. n Robert F. The film is an in-your-face history lesson and a look back at a family attempting to cope with the ever-surrounding violence. The film, however, does not explain all of the history, which is not necessarily a flaw. It shows uplifting and key moments in which the parents decide how to react to a place where family roots are strong but mayhem seeps out of every alleyway, public plaza, and apartment building. The film is an urban tapestry knocking at the door of the director’s childhood roots.

The cast features a revelatory and grounding portrayal from Caitríona Mary Balfe as Ma, and also showcases indelible moments from the mostly Irish cast including the aforementioned Jude Hill as the young hero, Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench as the beloved grandparents, and Jamie Dornan as the striving father. Over 200 Trees to be Planted in Elings Park to Replace Invasive Peruvian Pepper Trees
I
N A STEP TO PROTECT AND SUPPORT OUR LOCAL ECOSYSTEM, over 200 native California island oaks and live coast oaks will be planted along Jerry Harwin Parkway in Elings Park to replace non-native Peruvian pepper trees assigned for removal. The project is a joint effort by Elings Park, the City of Santa Barbara, and Channel Islands Restoration, and holds the mission of restoring native plant species to the park. “Oaks are the foundation of the Park’s natural ecosystem,” said Park Executive Director Dean Noble. “They support the web of life, including hundreds of insect species, which feed many of the 141 bird species that visit the park, and are champs in cleaning carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.” Community members interested in supporting the project have the opportunity to name specific trees by making a donation. out billions of dollars in stimulus money to families with the American Rescue in March that kept many families and businesses solvent. It delivered $1400 to millions of American families, extended enhanced unemployment benefits, and boosted funding to ramp up vaccine distribution and reopen schools. Sales rose four percent last month at internet retailers, 3.8 percent at electronics and appliance stores, and 2.2 percent at department stores to lead the way in October, all strong numbers. Sales also climbed 1.8 percent at auto dealers, but partly because of record prices. Automakers can’t make enough cars to satisfy demand due to a global parts shortage. Gas prices also surged 3.9 percent last month because of higher oil prices. If autos and gas are set aside, U.S. retail sales rose a smaller 1.4 percent last month. Those two categories often exaggerate ups and downs in consumer spending and aren’t always good indicators of how much households are willing to spend. Nor is it a reliable indicator of rampant inflation, as retail sales are not inflation-adjusted. Consumers are pushing up prices because they have so much money to spend, and the supply bottlenecks won’t subside until next year; probably after the holidays when consumers traditionally become stingier. So now isn’t the time to fret about inflation.
VOICE Why So Many Quitting? By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE
S
EVERAL HEADLINES RECENTLY screamed 4.4 Million Workers Quit Their Jobs, as if that was the most important takeaway from the Labor Department’s October JOLTS report. But there were also 6.5 million hires and 10.4 million separations. In fact, many of those quitting were shifting to better jobs, not leaving the workforce. Quits were up 34 percent year-over-year to a new record high. These are voluntary separations that generally mean they are finding better jobs. (see light blue columns for “quits”). Another indication job formation is heading in the right direction is that 4th Quarter GDP growth predictions are between six to eight percent, up from the Q3 growth slowdown to two percent, due largely to the expectation that Delta infection rates are falling. This is huge and predicates many more job hirings as producers race to stock their shelves in the face of shortages. And they had better stock up soon, as consumers are buying like never before. Retail and trade sales surged 1.7 percent last month, the government recently said, and are up 16.3 percent YoY. That’s the biggest gain since the government last doled Computer Oriented RE Technology

And the story of the cowboy turned famed cowboy/western Joe de Young’s Traffic in Yellowstone, slyly juxtaposing artist (1872–1945) continues. cowboy-hatted horseback riders with 1950s-vintage Fans and curiosity seekers can swing by automobiles wending through the park on paved roads. the actual Borein art studio in the El Paseo complex, Another often-exhibited local artist of historical note, where he worked for many years and even left an Colin Campbell Cooper, is seen via two views of Spanish unfinished painting of his grandly poetic finale canvas, themes: one surveys the grandeur of the Avila Cathedral a fond portrait of steers before a dramatic sunset. in the “old” Spain, while the painting A Santa Barbara That very canvas was left undisturbed on its host Courtyard (1925) represents local color, and a vision of the easel by his widow, Lucille, for a decade, before being “new Spain.” bequeathed to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum Though largely in traditional landscape painting and is now a centerpiece of the official, dedicated form and dealing with familiar tropes of “western art,” Edward Borein Gallery, the next logical stop on a there are hints of Modernist influence here, particularly Borein legacy-seeking trek. in the impressive painter Maynard Dixon’s 1927 painting Elsewhere in the gallery, a sizable set of small Wild Horses of Nevada, probably worthy of Best of Show watercolor pieces – supplied by an anonymous Santa honors. Friends. The showcase exhibition manages to put Borein in a larger context of regional art, while also pulling back the lens to give a forum for early 20th century artists from our midst. But who was this famed local cowboy artist? Borein came from a distinctly different and more conservative perspective than a later generational kingpin of the rustic-rancher art set Channing Peake, Santa Barbara County’s “cowboy cubist.” Clearly, Borein was an outlier in terms of the bubbling cauldron of new concepts and practices in modern art painting of his early-tomid 20th century heyday. He was a star in the artistic subculture – or fringe zone – of “Western art,” unabashedly nostalgic for a romantic ideal of the frontier and an age before abstraction muddied the waters of representation in painting. It seems entirely apt that, at the entrance of the circle exhibition, we find Borein hobnobbing with Walt Disney and Leo “Cisco Kid” Carrillo, of western movies fame. A bit oddly, the only direct painterly presence of Borein in the exhibition Borein and his Circle of Friends, curated by Marlene R. Miller, comes in the form of a formidable, but downhome portrait of the artist, in hat and chaps and flanked by a saddle, painted by Greekborn but Santa Barbara-settled artist Spencer Bagdatopoulos.
