Hospice of Santa Barbara Helps to Bring Back the Joy of the Holiday Season After the Death of a Loved One

T

HE HOLIDAYS ARE OFFICIALLY IN FULL SWING and it’s an exciting time to be thinking about all the wonderful memories we’ll be making with our close friends and family. But perhaps, this year, some feel an empty space in their heart for a missed loved one who has died and won’t be a part of their annual holiday traditions. Hospice of Santa Barbara’s Light Up A Life is one way to help make the holidays a little easier for them.

Since its start in Santa Barbara 36 years ago, Light Up A Life events have grown to include Carpinteria, Goleta, and Montecito. The ceremonies feature special speakers and guests, musical performances, and the lighting of a memorial tree. Though grief is a normal part of life, it can be especially difficult to cope with loss during, what is supposed to be, one of the most joyous times of the year. Hospice of Santa Barbara encourages our community to not just “get through” the holidays, but to embrace the season as a time for healing.

“The reason why Light Up A Life began 36 years ago was to create a sacred space for people experiencing grief, to come together at the start of the holiday season,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “People hang stars in honor of those they are missing and, by doing so, actively embrace and include those who have died into their holiday tradition. These grieving individuals and families can hopefully then move through the holidays in a more intentional and celebratory way.”

Many in our communities have come to see Light Up A Life as a necessary way to welcome the season.

“Reflecting on the memories of my parents and brother at Light Up A Life ceremonies is a powerful way for me to cope with their loss,” said Mitchel Davis, Santa Barbara resident.

So, in addition to Light Up A Life ceremonies, here are a few tips that may be helpful to those navigating the holidays with the weight of grief: • As the holidays near, acknowledge that there will be hard times ahead as you mourn your loved one. Remember that everyone grieves differently, and that it’s okay to not feel okay. If there are children in your family who are also coping with loss, focus on their needs and help them process through their grief.

• Make a conscious decision when it comes to carrying on your holiday traditions, or considering starting new ones. Continuing the old traditions may help keep your loved one’s memory alive, but setting new ones may help you to move on.

• Honor your loved one’s memory, whether it is through a beloved holiday tradition, or by sharing stories about them with your friends.

Remember that, although they are gone, their memory will always live on in your heart.

• Don’t forget to take care of yourself by getting a proper amount of sleep, eating healthy, and exercising when you can, but without exerting too much of your energy. Taking care of your body will help alleviate stress and improve your overall well-being.

• Surround yourself with a supportive community that will be with you every step of the way as you cope with your grief. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Greta Thunberg Has Changed Santa Barbara LIMATE STRIKE SANTA BARBARA was inspired by Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old from Sweden, who has activated millions of people world wide to recognize and take action concerning the climate crisis by striking on Fridays. Thousands of people globally and hundreds of students and adults locally have joined the strike, which in Santa Barbara is held every Friday in front of Santa Barbara City Hall from 12 to 1pm.

“Many people say that Sweden is just a small country and it doesn’t matter what we do. But I’ve learnt that no one is too small to make a difference. And if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school — then imagine what we all could do together if we really wanted to,” states Thunberg in her book, No one is too small.

Thunberg walked onto the world stage in August 2018 when she carried a placard outside the Swedish Parliament calling for action concerning global warming. She was soon joined by other students and she then organized a School Climate Strike called Fridays for Future. She was aged 15 at the time. Following a speech

at the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, students around the world took up the call and began striking on Fridays.

The following year, 2019, she organized protests in several cities which involved over one million students at each location. Also in 2019, Thunberg was featured on the cover of Time magazine and named a “next generation leader.” Thunberg, age 16 has received the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Geddes Environment Medal, has been named as one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by Time magazine, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In September 2019, she addressed the UN Climate Action Summit in New York.

“Many people are trying to make the school strikes a question of whether we are promoting truancy or whether we should go back to school or not. They make up all sorts of conspiracies and call us puppets who cannot think for ourselves. They are desperately trying to remove the focus from the climate crisis and change the subject.

They don’t want to talk about it because they know they cannot win this fight. Because they know they haven’t done their homework, but we have. Once you have done your homework you realize that we need new politics, we need new economics where everything is

MTD Transitions Diesel Fleet To Renewable Diesel

Motivational speeches by Greta Thunberg have been turned into a book titled No One Is Too Small To Make A Difference.

A global movement has been formed inspired by the direct and meaningful voice of Thunberg as she has spoken truth to power.

This book, published by Penguin Books and available at Chaucers Books, is a compilation of 16 speeches in chronological order, beginning Sept. 8th, 2018.

Clearly and without mincing words, Thunberg tells her readers “the house is on fire” metaphorically relating the world’s need to address the climate crisis now.

The speeches were gathered from her rallies around the world, where she has addressed the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, the British Parliament, and the United States Congress.

RINGING THE WORLD TOGETHER TO CONSIDER TACTICS for the strongest implementation of the Paris Agreement is the main goal at the Madrid Climate Change Conference, taking place from December 2nd to the 16th.

The conference is the 25th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention to Combat Climate Change. Delegates from nearly 200 countries are meeting to discuss crucial negotiations in relation to the climate agreement. Originally, the conference was set to take place in Chile, but the protests in Santiago forced the U.N. to relocate the event to Spain last month. The conference has already begun with a sense of urgency that was put into words by the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose opening statement included the point that the climate crisis may soon reach a critical juncture.

“The point of no return is no longer over the horizon. It is in sight and hurtling towards us,” Guterres said in a news conference that preceded the first talks of the conference.

Topics of discussion at the conference will include compensation for poor countries with rising sea levels and how carbon-trading systems, which could help reduce the overall cost of climate mitigation efforts, will function. Amongst a backdrop of uncertain geopolitics and ever-building public pressure, the World Health Organization reported a new peak for atmospheric greenhouse-gas concentrations in 2018 and a U.N. climate report, released in November, said the Paris Agreement’s goal of mitigating the global average temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius may soon be out of reach.

The main goals of the conference will include laying out a plan for cutting global carbon emissions by 7.6 percent every year over the next decade, which countries will lead the charge against climate change, and how to regulate international carbon markets. Learn more at https://unfccc.int/cop25

ANTA BARBARA MTD has stopped purchasing petroleum diesel and will now fuel the agency’s diesel fleet with renewable diesel (RD) as of December 2nd. This transition requires no infrastructure changes and the new fuel can be dispensed into the same tank that held the old fuel.

Different from biodiesel, renewable diesel is refined from a mix of more than ten different wastes and residues and various vegetable oils. Around 92 percent of this fuel comes from a combination of used cooking oil, waste animal fat, waste fish fat, and residue oils. Renewable diesel is odorless, and emits 33 percent lower fine particulates that aggravate asthma.

While not zero-emission, renewable diesel represents an 80 percent reduction in emissions and carbon intensity from petroleum diesel. The carbon intensity of renewable diesel is about one-third of that of a battery-electric vehicle charging on the California grid.

Santa Barbara MTD’s Board of Directors set a goal in November 2018 to transition the entire MTD fleet to 100 percent battery-electric by 2030. This transition to renewable diesel speeds up a reduction in emissions fleetwide, and takes the opportunity to green the remaining diesel fleet.

Environmental Groups Applaud California’s Actions Toward Phasing Out Dirty Fossil Fuels

AST MONTH ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS CELEBRATED A MAJOR VICTORY for the environment and healthy communities when Governor Gavin Newsom announced three new actions intended to catalyze the State’s efforts to achieve its climate goal of being carbon-neutral by 2045. The State is taking affirmative steps to protect public health and the environment from dirty and risky oil extraction techniques by establishing a moratorium on high-pressure extraction practices, strengthening health and safety protections near oil and gas facilities, and initiating a third-party review of hydraulic fracturing and related permitting. These actions reflect Governor Newsom’s focus on strengthening the regulatory oversight of oil and gas production in California.

This news comes on the heels of a series of controversies this past summer with permitting at the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources as well as the catastrophic spill of nearly one million gallons of crude oil and water into a dry streambed at a Chevron facility in the Cymric Oil Field, Kern County.

“This statewide moratorium comes just after Ventura County’s moratorium on all cyclic steam injection in the Oxnard field after USGS findings of groundwater pollution near steam injection oil operations there,” said Katie Davis, Chair of the Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter. “It is increasingly clear that steam injection poses unacceptable risks to our water supplies, as well as being radically counter to our climate goals. The Cat Canyon oil projects, which would drill through the Santa Maria drinking water aquifer, should be stopped cold by Santa Barbara County now.”

“SBCAN joins the environmental community in celebrating the extraordinary steps taken today by Governor Newsom to halt risky oil extraction techniques, like steam injection, throughout California,” said Ken Hough, Executive Director for the Santa Barbara County Action Network (SBCAN). “The new moratorium shows that Californians deeply care about our environment and climate, and we are determined to protect our communities and groundwater resources from dangerous and toxic operations.”

“Steam injection operations can have devastating consequences, as demonstrated right here in Santa Barbara County’s Cat Canyon Oil Field” said Tara Messing, Staff Attorney for the Environmental Defense Center. “Since 1977, the Environmental Defense Center has stood up against the fossil fuel industry to advance environmental protection. Our fight continues as the County now faces a massive increase in onshore oil and gas production using steam injection in Cat Canyon. Today’s moratorium on high-pressure steam injection is a new tool in our toolbox to phase out extreme oil extraction in our County and protect our water, air, biodiversity, and public health.”

Community News SB Unified School District Superintendent to retire in 2020

Cary Matsuoka will retire from his position as the superintendent of Santa Barbara public schools at the end of the school year after 40 years as an educator.

Over the course of his career in public education, Matsuoka served as a high school teacher for 17 years and for 23 years as an administrator. As a teacher, he directly taught over 2,500 students in his classrooms and as an administrator, he was responsible for the education of 150,000 students over the course of 23 years and was involved in the granting of 16,000 high school diplomas.

Matsuoka’s original plan was to retire in June of 2019 but he postponed his retirement when he noticed three urgent matters that required his presence, the hiring of the next cohort of principals at several local high schools, the favorable resolution of a major lawsuit, and the continued building up of the leadership team for the district.

“I am proud of the momentum and culture that I am passing along to the next superintendent, the systems that are in place, Cary Matsuoka and the solid financial standing of our district,” said Matsuoka in a news release.

Matsuoka also said that his experience at the helm of Santa Barbara’s public school system has been a rewarding experience.

“Cary is a very effective leader who has had the instincts, wisdom, and courage to make tough decisions and take needed action. He has assembled an incredibly strong group of educators to lead our schools, and has helped our district put the foundation and systems in place to continue moving in the right direction,” Wendy Sims-Moten, board president, said.

Supervisor Hart Seeks Applicants to Fill Vacancies on Behavioral Wellness Commission and Library Advisory Committee

ECOND DISTRICT SUPERVISOR GREGG HART announced that he is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on the Behavioral Wellness Commission and Library Advisory Committee.

The Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness Commission exists as an advisory board to the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness and the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors regarding the County’s provision of mental health and alcohol and other drug programs and services.

The Library Advisory Committee makes advisory recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding the assurance of adequate library services to all residents of the County of Santa Barbara and reviews the operation of the overall library system.

“The Behavioral Wellness Commission and Library Advisory Committee play integral roles in County government by giving invaluable input to the Board of Supervisors for agencies that provide access to information, education and care,” Hart stated.

To apply for these positions, interested individuals must complete a Santa Barbara County board and commission application that is available online on the County website at http://countyofsb.org/ceo/cob/boards.sbc. An application may also be requested by calling the Clerk of the Board at 805-568-2240.

Applications must be submitted to the Clerk of the Board’s office at 105 E Anapamu St., Santa Barbara, 93101 by Friday January 10th, 2020 to be considered. Following the close of the application process, Supervisor Hart will review applications and make recommendations for appointment.

Phillip Delio , M.D., has been honored with the 2019 Physician of the Year for Santa Barbara County Award, given by the Central Coast Medical Association.

The award is reserved for local physicians who have worked to improve the area’s quality of health care, contributed Phillip Delio to the education of other physicians, and engaged in community service as well as other activities outside of medicine.

A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Delio has been described by his peers and colleagues as a healer, teacher, and nurturer. He completed his neurology residency and fellowship at Stanford University and then returned to Santa Barbara to join the Neurology Associates in 2001.

During his time at Cottage Hospital, he has been honored as the internal medicine residency program’s teacher of the year twice and was crucial in obtaining the hospital’s advanced certification for comprehensive stroke centers from the Joint Commission. He is also currently chief of staff, vice chair of the department of neurology, and medical director of the stroke program.

Delio is also an adjunct professor in the psychology department at UCSB and served as president of the Santa Barbara County Medical Society in 2010 while being a delegate to the California Medical Association’s house of delegates.

Gaston Receives Rotary Teaching Honors

Mary Gaston recently received the Teacher Recognition Award for the fall quarter from the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara County Education Office.

As prizes, she received a plaque and $1,000.

A teacher for the visually impaired through the Santa Barbara Unified School District, Gaston works with students from birth all the way up to the age of 22.

“I help students who are visually impaired to learn in the way that fits them best and teach them to use adapted materials and equipment throughout the school day and at home when needed,” Gaston said in a news release.

She has been providing support to students in southern Santa Barbara County since 1985 and is extremely dedicated and studentcentered. A graduate of UCSB with a Bachelor of Arts in Developmental Psychology and a Master of Arts from Cal State Los Angeles, Gaston plans to Mary Gaston use the $1,000 prize to purchase a new desktop computer and Braille software so that she can have a dedicated Braille station in her office.”

Ms. Gaston’s dedication to students with visual impairments epitomizes the devotion of our Santa Barbara County teachers,” Dr. Susan Salcido, county superintendent of schools, said. “Mary is well-liked and respected by her colleagues and the families she has served over the years. She is an absolute asset to the Santa Barbara community.”

Michelle Martinez Mercado was recently welcomed as the new program facilitator in Santa Paula for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Mercado, in her new role, will lead groups of elementary-aged girls in a balanced program of hands-on learning opportunities and academic support as part of the Bold Futures Mentoring Project. The program is held on campus, after school at middle schools and at other youth facilities in Santa Paula. It is Michelle Martinez Mercado designed to support Girls Inc.’s mission to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.

“We know that mentoring is the single most important factor in preventing risky behaviors in youth,” Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, said in a news release.

“Michelle brings a passion for working with youth and providing girls with key building blocks for future success so that they can thrive.”

A current resident of Carpinteria, Mercado holds an AA in social behavioral sciences from Santa Barbara City College and will earn her BA in sociology at California Lutheran University www.girlsinc-carp.org next spring.

Sarah Camp, after serving for eight years as the director of marketing and communications at a leadership development ministry known as Christian Union, has returned to Westmont College as assistant vice president for college advancement and interim director of alumni and parent relations. Previously, she served as the director of Westmont’s annual Sarah Camp giving program from 2000 to 2008.

“My overarching goal is to help Westmont flourish institutionally and communally,” Camp said in a news release. “I’m here because Westmont fills an essential role in higher education and in our society. I’m committed to helping the college thrive, increase its influence, and be a greater force for good.”

A Santa Barbara native with many connections to Westmont, Camp recognizes the impact that the school has had on her own life and is excited to be working for an outstanding president and board of trustees.

Kim Johnson, an edible education advocate, was recently honored with the inaugural Edible Education Award at the Santa Barbara Edible Education Symposium. The event brought together farmers, gardeners, food service providers, educators, youth, and others interested in cultivating the food literacy movement along the Central Coast and throughout the state.

Johnson was recognized for her Kim Johnson years of dedication to the edible education movement. Being a teacher who stumbled into music management, Johnson is able to utilize education theory to create community engagement programs for music tours, festivals, environmental foundations, and schools.

She and her musician husband, Jack Johnson, founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii. She continues to develop and oversee all five of the foundation’s main programs, including a farm to school initiative that connects children to their land and food by promoting healthy school lunches featuring locally grown produce, providing nutrition education, and garden-based learning.

Montecito Creek Bridge Re-Opening Ceremony

OCIAL REVOLUTIONARY FRANZ FANON WROTE, “If the building of a bridge does not enrich the awareness of those who work on it, then that bridge ought not to be built.” Those present at the Montecito Creek Bridge re-opening Ceremony on November 22nd were transformed and informed by the re-building: Caltrans managers and local lawmakers gave speeches and spoke intimately with each other about lessons learned from the project, and the debris flow that took the lives of 23 people, following the Thomas Fire in January, 2018.

State Senator Hannah Beth Jackson, who lives in the area, invited the neighbors to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony that honored the hard work of the community, and offered another level of healing. “We have to show people we are here for them!”

“I am very pleased that we can bring a small sense of normalcy to a community still healing from this natural disaster,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

The completion follows the rebuilding of five other bridges: Arroyo Paredon Creek Bridge in May, Romero Canyon and Toro Canyon Bridges in January and San Ysidro Creek Bridge in April.

The contractor for this $20 million project to restore five of the bridges was Security Paving of Sylmar, CA. Lash Construction of Santa Barbara was the contractor for the $10 million replacement of Arroyo Paredon Bridge.

AGIC HAPPENS at The Nutcracker at the Arlington, a Santa Barbara tradition for the past 45 years. Performed by generations of families supporting the Santa Barbara Festival Ballet, this year’s production is no exception, as it embraces the skillful magic of this beloved ballet along with the spirit of family. Reprising their roles as Sugar Plum Fairy and Sugar Plum Cavalier are world renowned dancers Misa Kuranaga and Angelo Greco, principals at the San Francisco Ballet, who will be joined by generations of past and present SBFB dancers as well as UCSB dancers and community members rounding out the cast.

“SBFB prides itself on creating an enchanting experience for its audiences and we continue our commitment to secure some of the best dancers in the world for each production. We are thrilled to share with our community and students the exceptional talent of Misa and Angelo,” said Denise Rinaldi, Santa Barbara Festival Ballet Director. “Audiences will experience a whimsical showcase of some of the best dancers in the world.”

Generations of SBFB students will perform, some alongside their parents who were past students of SBFB. This includes SBFB Board Vice-President Elizabeth Reiter, her husband Eddie, and their daughter Ember, a current SBFB student. Other returning dancers include Madelynn Ramming, a third generation student, and former students Addie Clarke, Regan Cattoi, and Thea Palencia.

“SBFB’s Nutcracker is a celebration of tradition and family. It is thrilling to see so many familiar faces attend auditions. From past students to present, producing this show builds a great sense of community and results in a dedicated cast and beautiful production,” added Aimee Lopez, Nutcracker’s Artistic Director.

Nearly 100 students and professional dancers will make up this year’s troupe for The Nutcracker performance. Iconic scenes include The Waltz of the Snowflakes, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Party Scene, among others. A full, live orchestra will be conducted by Elise Unruh. The Nutcracker is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th (2:30pm and 7pm) and Sunday, December 15th (7pm) at the Arlington Theatre.

These tasty, spiced, chickpea balls are also a staple for vegans, and when Santa Barbara resident Far Rahimian tasted them at Fala Bar in Venice Beach, and learned that all the yummy food is plant-based, locally sourced, and organic, he decided to introduce this concept in Santa Barbara, in the Public Market at 38 W Victoria St. “Fast, casual, vegan… but offering dishes for all types of diets, from hummus to avo toast to sweet potato fries—we wanted to bring something new!” gushed Rahimian. “We have a long way to go to educate the public; to break stereotypes that vegan food isn’t delicious, it is! Fresh, no preservatives, it’s almost homemade: everything from scratch. We want to inspire and educate.”

The shop, located in a primo spot on the edge of De La Guerra Plaza, is a passion project of longtime shop and gallery owner, Edie Caldwell who opened her first shop, The Light Fantastic, when she was 24 in La Jolla, CA. Caldwell grew up in a large family in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the years, she has tried her hand at many things - first and foremost being a world citizen, which is reflected in her shop’s aesthetic.

A stint as a travel agent in San Francisco made world travel possible and allowed her to deepen her Marvin Bauer and Monika fascination with Klein at the opening art and antiques.

In 1991, she opened an art gallery on Post Street near Union Square, Edith Caldwell Gallery, which specialized in contemporary, representational artwork in San Francisco, Sausalito, and Rockport, Maine.

Eight years ago, Caldwell retired and moved to Santa Barbara. She reopened her gallery on De La Guerra Plaza adding antique and vintage furniture and home accessories to the mix.

ESTERDAY, FOR ME, WAS WHEN I COULD GORGE THIS TIME OF THE YEAR ON BELOVED CHOCOLATE and have no consequences other than weight gain! Sadly, that is now the past.

But, I can dream about chocolate and talk about it, so today as we head into heavy chocolate season, I’m going to.

What really got me all stirred up on chocolate was an article in an Italian Chocolatier in Paris magazine I get about all the chocolate festivals in the small towns of Italy. I ChocoModica is the big deal in Modica. never thought of Italy as chocolate country Aztec inspired, it’s different than the usual beyond Perugia. But not so. They even take it chocolate. It is not smoothly delicious like our in liquid form. Not the hot chocolate we make chocolate ice creams, but has a grainy texture on cold winter nights; they have a drink in because the ancient recipe for it includes the Torino, Italy called Bicerin (bavareisa torinese) heavy grinding of the cocoa bean. For four that’s made of three layers of espresso, hot days in December, Modica has conferences, chocolate, and whipped milk or cream. It’s not workshops, games, shows, and entertainment served in a cup or mug like our hot chocolate, that are all chocolate inspired. But interestingly, with all the famous chocolates of the world, I seldom left for a trip to Europe without a list of names requesting I bring them a box of See’s Chocolate fountain in the Bellagio Hotel in Las chocolates!

Opera Outreach Program performs Evan Mack’s children’s opera for local elementary schools and community

VER WONDER HOW THE POINSETTIA became a symbol of the holiday season? Composer, librettist, and pianist Evan Mack answers that question in Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena, a children’s opera based on a Mexican folk tale.

Students from Hollister, La Patera, and Isla Vista elementary schools had an opportunity to hear the story when the UCSB Department of Music’s Opera Outreach Program performed the children’s opera in Karl Geiringer Hall, Tuesday through Friday, December 3rd to 6th.

Terra Giddens is Lucinda and Steven Thomson Browning is Everybody in Evan Mack’s holiday opera.

In addition, a community performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place Sunday, December 8th, also in Geiringer Hall.

For many of the youngsters, these performances marked their first opera experience. Written in a combination of English and Spanish, Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena conveys a universal message of courage, hope, Isabel Bayrakdarian and transformation that transcends religious and cultural lines and empowers students to identify and celebrate their inner strengths.

“I remember seeing my first opera at the age of 17,” recalled Isabel Bayrakdarian, an associate professor in the music department’s voice program, and director of the Opera Outreach production. “Something inside of me just lit up. I always liked to sing, but never imagined myself on stage, until I saw a live opera performance and felt I could relate to the characters on stage.

Even though I had just started my biomedical engineering studies, I knew that music was going to be as essential to me as oxygen.”

This project is supported by the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center Collaborative Arts Teaching Program Award that Bayrakdarian received last fall. The award focuses on communityengaged visual and performing art projects housed within UC Santa Barbara courses, in this case, Bayrakdarian’s Opera Outreach course, which is offered annually.

“I believe there are unique talents in all of us,” Bayrakdarian continued. “Sometimes all that is needed is a little creative spark to activate destiny. I hope this opera production provides the artistic catalyst that will inspire school-age children to be the creative thinkers and trailblazing musicians of tomorrow.”

Community News New Board Members at Wilderness Youth Project

L

ENA MORÁN AND GRACIELA CABELLO recently joined the board of trustees for the Wilderness Youth Project, a leading nature connection organization in Santa Barbara.

Lena Morán was born in Mexico City and moved to Santa Barbara at the age of six. She has a bachelor’s degree liberal studies and a master’s in education with an emphasis on social justice and leadership from Antioch University Santa Barbara, where she did research on children who are used as interpreters and an evaluation system of interpretation and translation services in school districts.

TRIKES WERE STRUCK AND FUN WAS PLENTIFUL at the 10th annual United We Bowl’s Bowl-a-Thon event, presented by United Way of Santa Barbara County and its Young Leaders Society, raised upwards of $8,000 on November 19th with over 130 bowlers in attendance.

With all proceeds going to benefit literacy programs in the county, the United We Bowl event hit the record-setting mark by selling out every single lane at Zodo’s Bowling and Beyond and putting on a raffle which featured over $1,400 in prizes for teams and individuals to win. Economic Growth…Watch Out Below—Part II!

T IS OBVIOUS FROM THE GRAPH BELOW that manufacturing activity is contracting, whereas the service industries continue to grow. So exports that depend mostly on manufactured goods are declining, while imports that depend on consumers will continue to grow. This also means slowing economic growth, since shrinking exports add less to GDP growth, while much larger import totals actually subtract from growth.

“November was the fourth consecutive month of PMI® contraction, at a faster rate compared to the prior month,” said Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. “Demand contracted, with the New Orders Index contracting faster, the Customers’ Inventories Index remaining at ‘too low’ levels, and the Backlog of Orders Wrightson.com Index contracting for the seventh straight month (and at a faster rate). The New Export Orders Index returned to contraction territory, likely contributing to the faster contraction of the New Orders Index.”

Manufacturing is in recession, in other words. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Kentucky’s steel industry has suffered because of steel and aluminum tariffs that have in fact slowed demand for its products. The result is steel prices have dropped by more than 40 percent since last summer.

“They have been hurt by tepid domestic demand for steel production amid a U.S. manufacturing recession and a global slowdown in economic growth, among other things,” reports the Inquirer.

Demand for steel in the U.S. grew 2.1 percent in 2018. But this year, a slowdown in American construction and automobile production helped diminish demand to just one percent, and it is projected to grow just 0.4 percent in 2020, the World Steel Association said this month, per the Inquirer.

And, “Global trade remains the most significant cross-industry issue,” said ISM’s Fiore. “Among the six big industry sectors, Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products remains the strongest, while Fabricated Metal Products is the weakest. Overall, sentiment this month is neutral regarding near-term growth.”

Why the decline in manufacturing? It is likely the Trump administration’s trade policies, as manufacturing depends on foreign trade for many of its components, and foreign demand for many of its products.

products from Brazil and Argentina, further hurting global trade.

We also know overall Industrial Production is declining. Total industrial production was 1.1 percent lower in October than it was a year earlier. Capacity utilization for the industrial sector decreased 0.8 percentage point in October to 76.7 percent, a rate that is 3.1 percentage points below its long-run (1972–2018) average.

Last week’s revised Q3 GDP report was upped to 2.1 from 1.9 percent, with a slight increase in consumption and inventories. But it won’t help an even weaker Q4 GDP which is predicted to barely grow due to declining exports.

Manufacturing and consumer spending are really the two main components of economic growth.

Stock prices of the largest steel companies have declined as much as 50 percent, also according to the Inquirer. And with steel prices down, their earnings have begun to decline.

So trade wars seem to be wreaking as much havoc to economic growth as other geopolitical concerns, such as growing civil unrest in the Middle East and Asia (Hong Kong). Continuing to wage trade wars in the name of national security is really becoming a danger to our national security, as well as economic growth.

‘Out of Many’

Fall dance concert explores questions of inclusivity, self-definition and communal responsibility HE WORK OF FIVE BFA SENIOR DANCE STUDENTS AND ONE FACULTY MEMBER — assistant professor Brandon Whited — will be presented in “Out of Many,” the theater and dance department’s annual fall dance concert.

Directed by Christina McCarthy, the department’s director of dance, in collaboration with lecturer Ann Bruice, the concert opened Thursday, December 5th, in Hatlen Theater and continues through Saturday, December 7th.

In their respective pieces, each choreographer and student costume designer is investigating how the individual relates to and integrates with society and the community, and how each of us strives to be part of the world while remaining true to ourselves.

“Each summer the senior dance majors start thinking about what is in the forefront of their mind and how the ideas that are brewing will come to life as dance art in the Fall Dance Concert,” explained McCarthy. “It is not surprising that these choreographers are asking about how the individual is defined and how they fit into our larger world. We are all in a place of uncertainty as we navigate new and exciting questions about inclusivity, self-definition, and communal responsibility.”

Among the student works presented is choreographer Wes Dameron’s Atlas Reflection, which explores the aesthetic juxtapositions in the perceived corporeal forms of statues. Dameron finds a non-linear and durational aesthetic as he alternates between the humanness of the individual dancers on stage and the objects of artistic beauty they embody in their controlled and stylized movement.

In Hinder, choreographer Lexi Cipriano examines the idea of the individual facing obstacles, and how our perceptions of what is happening leads us to decision-making that informs and creates the path of our lives. Exploring the energy of spatial dynamics and pathways on stage, she offers a poetic and abstract physical interpretation of stress, questioning, assumption, feat, and frustration.

Invite to Surrender, choreographed by Morgan Geraghty, invites the audience and the dancers to surrender to the music and chaos therein. The piece dives into a dichotomous world as the soloist finds herself stuck between aspiration for perfection and acceptance of the unpredictability of life.

Geraghty’s work emerges from adherence to and breaking away from driving, beat-heavy music, fusing contemporary and modern dance techniques to communicate the value of release and surrender.

In her work in: somnia, Whitney Ross delves into a surreal experience for audiences and dancers as a way of investigating obsession and infatuation. Through a progression from focused unity and calm abandon that devolves into chaos and conflicting individual experiences, the movement

explores the isolating effect of getting lost in one’s daydreams.

The Reality of Degas, by Gina Schemenauer, brings to life impressionist painter Edgar Degas’ artwork of ballet dancers. The ballet point piece begins within the realm of classical ballet, centering on Degas’ famous painting, The Dancing Class. It then transforms into a darker, more contemporary ballet movement, reflecting the unseen struggle of ballet. Expressed through the lens of an individual contemplating one’s role in the art form of ballet, the piece falls in line with the broader concepts of fitting in culturally and what it takes to thrive and survive.

Faculty member Whited’s piece, 95 North, originally developed through a commission for Santa Barbara Dance Theater, examines the call of the north, wanderlust for opportunity and growth, and the youthful audacity to dream of a life beyone one’s current circumstances. Utilizing group form and featured roles from within the ensemble, 95 North reflects the myriad paths any of us might take in life, and the varied perspectives we hold. The work draws from Whited’s personal history of growth, travel and the process of becoming through self-citation and the aesthetics, physicality and experiences that shaped his relationship to dance.

Behind the scenes, and supported by the vision and mentorship of Bruice, three student costume designers — Janelle Provost, Savannah Lo and Winnie Tin — have worked in collaboration with the student choreographers to present the choreographic ideas with stunning and evocative costume designs.

Each student designer begins with the choreographers’ imaginings and expands the focus of the dance creation to include the visual elements present in the costuming color, style and textural qualities. As the dance is built, the costumes are conceived and created in tandem.
