A NEW 4-DAY SPECIAL EVENT & POP UP HALF STREET CLOSURE ON STATE STREET Thursday, May 7 - Sunday, May 10

To revitalize Downtown State Street and improve transportation safety, the City of Santa Barbara is exploring different transportation improvements along State Street through Downtown Santa Barbara. As part of this process, the City of Santa Barbara is partnering with SBCAG Traffic Solutions and Downtown Santa Barbara to host a four-day pop-up half street closure of State Street from Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10 called CycleMAYnia’s Celebrate State. The half closure will entail the conversion of the southbound State Street lane from Victoria Street to Yanonali Street to a 2-way multi-use path for bikes, skaters, scooters, surreys, pedicabs, and joggers. During the four days, traffic operations will be closely monitored and the public and businesses will be surveyed to get their feedback about this traffic treatment on State Street.

HALF STREET CLOSURE

Parklet Activation Opportunities (Free For Downtown Businesses)

As part of the half closure, 6 right-hand turn pockets along the route will be activated as “parklets” where State Street businesses, organizations or individuals can create displays, offer activities, or create spaces for people to enjoy during the four-day event. Use your imagination to dream up a fun idea to promote your business or idea and attract attention or show off what you envision the parklet could be on a more permanent basis! The sky is the limit (well actually the street is the limit). Some ideas include: Giant Jenga and other fun street games, chalk drawing or arts and crafts, ping pong, outside living room, outside dining, live music, outreach booth, samples and displays, petting zoo, enclosed dog park, street theatre performances, bike rodeo for kids, and more... If you’d like to showcase your business or offer an activity to promote or your organization in a parklet during Celebrate State, please join us to learn more at one of the below meetings.

Cavity Free Club Celebrates Success!

XCITED LAUGHTER AND THE SOUND OF CHILDREN’S VOICES reverberated on a recent Saturday, when the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and Assistance League of Santa Barbara hosted children and their families for a celebration of fun and “cavityfree” recognition at The Assistance League Headquarters. More than 300 children and their families filled the space to capacity as Dr. Domenic Caluori, Chief Dental Officer of Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and Goleta Dental Clinic Manager Maria Torres led everyone in the chant, “Healthy Teeth! Healthy Body!” “The annual Cavity Free Club celebration positively reinforces the successes of our child patients and their parents in maintaining a cavity free mouth. Education is one of the most effective tools in achieving and maintaining good health,” Caluori related. “This celebration is a fun way to educate our patients and their parents and brings oral health to the forefront of their daily lives. The Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics is grateful to Assistance League of Santa Barbara for hosting this event in their headquarters and for educating our young patients all year long in good oral home care and proper nutritional choices to improve their oral and systemic health.” The Cavity Free Club was established in 2012 as an incentive for kids and their parents to practice good oral health. Child patients at the Eastside Family Dental Clinic or the Goleta Neighborhood Dental Clinic who do not have any cavities or were able to remain cavity free for six months are eligible club members. Those children who have been cavity free for six months have their pictures posted on a “cavity free” board in the reception area of each clinic. Each child is congratulated and presented with a certificate of achievement for being an excellent “Cavity Fighter.” Children’s names are entered into drawings on the day of the event to win various prizes. “The Smiles Program of the Santa Barbara Assistance League plays a crucial role in this day. They have a program with volunteer educators who come to our dental clinics in the afternoon and educate the children on proper oral health habits such as brushing and flossing,” explained Caluori. “This is also where the children and parents learn about the negative effects of sugar in our diet and how to make smart dietary choices.” Smiling, Caluori added, “Thank you to the Assistance League, the dental program volunteers, staff, and management of Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics. The average patient spends two hours per year in the dental chair but has 8,758 hours at home to maintain their oral health.” The day ended with the coveted two rafflings of a boy and a girl-themed bicycle.

Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival

IVE DAYS OF OUTSTANDING JEWISH CINEMA including feature films, shorts, documentaries, guest speakers, and engaging discussions will bring the community together for the Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival set to take place from March 11th through 15th at The New Vic Theatre. Sponsors and festival pass holders are invited to a reception to celebrate the opening of the Festival on Wednesday, March 11th from 5:30 to 6:45pm at The New Vic Theatre. Refreshments and Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres will be served. The reception will be followed with the screening of the first film, When Hitler The Santa Barbara Jewish Film Stole Pink Rabbit at 7pm. Festival will open with When Hitler Organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Stole Pink Rabbit on March 11th Barbara, this year’s Festival will include high quality, unique films showcasing a wide range of documentaries, dramas, comedies, and shorts by American, European, and Israeli filmmakers. New Research on Pre-Death Dreams and Visions to Inform Annual PHorum

HE DEEPLY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF PATIENTS NEAR THE END OF THEIR LIVES have informed the work of Dr. Christopher Kerr for years. An “accidental” hospice doctor, (he answered an advertisement for a weekend position) Dr. Kerr has made it his life work to listen and understand his patients during their last weeks and days and take seriously their subjective experiences. This work has led to quantifiable and touching information about what it means to be human, while experiencing the end of one’s life. On Thursday, March 12th from 5 to 7pm at the Lobero Theatre, Kerr will discuss his latest findings, Phenomenal Research on End-of-Life Experiences. His research has received international attention and has been featured in The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, and the BBC. “Dying is a paradox,” Christopher Kerr, MD, PhD Kerr shared in a telephone Chief Exec. Officer & Chief Medical Officer interview. “Physically patients are declining. Yet psychologically, it is a rich time.” In his first study, Kerr used quantifiable data to demonstrate that pre-death dreams and visions are experienced by the majority of dying patients and that these experiences provided positive psychological and spiritual benefits. He followed up, digging deeper, and now he will discuss how

such experiences help the dying grow and adapt as life ends. “Dying is a post traumatic event... patients are growning and gaining insight right up until the end of life,” he explained. “With pre-death dreams and visions patients are more than just being comforted. At a deeper level - what was happening underneath growth and adaption... is counter to the physical image of what is happening,” while dying. After the keynote presentation, Dr. Michael Kearney, VNA Health Associate Medical Director, will join Kerr to discuss the effect of these experiences on the bereaved loved ones who remain. Kerr noted that practitioners who make room and space for patients’ pre-death dreams and visions experience more meaningful clinical interactions, sharing that if the only focus is on patients when they are curable, clinicians will “forget our obligation to be present - at the roots of our profession.” That being with, and not abandoning, patients who are dying brings the most gratification. Kerr supports the importance of listening and honoring an individual patient’s end of life experiences and the meaning dimension that can be impacted. “Dying is more than a medical equation. It is also a closure of a life,” he shared. Pre-death dreams and visions are “processes that are meaningful and life affirming and carry with them understanding and comfort. To be denied that is to dehumanize. Dying is a very human experience; [it’s] the end of life.” In these moments of sharing and being present, health care practitioners can be enriched. “I’m left thinking there is a better story... in some way, the best parts of having lived aren’t lost... When a mother is comforted by her mother, who is

PERA SANTA BARBARA IS THRILLED TO PRESENT OUR FIRST OPERA IN SPANISH, Il Postino (The Postman) by the great Mexican-American composer Daniel Catán. (Don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish – the English translation is projected above the stage!) Based on the 1994 Oscar-winning film, it’s a beautiful story about a young man who learns from the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda how to woo the woman of his dreams. We tell the story through lush music by a 28-piece orchestra, gorgeous singing, evocative staging and digital video projections. Opera is nothing but another form of music theater and we want everyone to feel welcome to try our shows. We want our audience to reflect our community across age, race, and economic status. Thanks to our generous supporters we are able to provide community access tickets and special pricing so more people can see live opera. And, we do more than just mainstage shows. We perform nearly 30 free concerts in Santa Barbara and Ventura County every year! We host events (often free) throughout the season about opera and the fantastic stories we tell, like pub nights, talk backs, and open rehearsals. 30 knot gusts in the Channel challenged all the very hardy (or absolutely crazy) sailors to brave her fury. A few boats were up for the chase with First Place winners in four categories: Harbor 20’s – Bulldog, PHRF – Mocos, J-70’s - 3 Big Dogs, and CHRF – Eos. The more cautious of us enjoyed watching the race from the interior of the Club and I can assure you the party continued with music, fun, and delicious food long past the witching hour. Soon we’ll be changing our watches to another time, reminding us that summer is just beginning to wake from her slumber with good times ahead!

2020 Yachting Season Underway HE SECOND OLDEST YACHT CLUB ON THE WEST COAST LAUNCHED ITS 2020 SEASON under sunny skies and fair winds in the early hours of Sunday, March 1st. The Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s 148th Opening Day – was heralded by flags adorning the deck, with more on the roof and the yardarm, all welcoming Commodores and honored guests from yacht clubs up and down the coast of California. Yacht Club Women stood at entrances as official 1 greeters, and the Club’s Bridge officers and their wives, along with the Women’s Executive Board, welcomed each guest and member attending this year’s honored 2 tradition. As the second oldest yacht club on the West Coast, traditions are indeed important - although a little color in the form of smokey pink (ok ... not exactly pink but close) pants and skirts appeared beneath the official jackets of the VIP’s in the receiving line to liven the scene. Definitely loved it! A gorgeous breakfast buffet to please every culinary taste with an assortment of yummy desserts (think Jenny Craig!) started the day on the enclosed upper deck along with a generous selection of javas at the coffee bar. Oh yes... and for those who distain coffee, Mimosas in mass were

available just in case anyone needed hydration. Promptly at 10am, 2020 Commodore Garry Pawlitski began the opening ceremony by welcoming the almost 200 dignitaries, guests, and members assisted by his Bridge officers, Vice Commodore Andra Escola, Rear Commodore Eli Parker, and Junior Staff Commodore Scott Deardorff. The ceremonies began with the Presentation of Colors by three members of Cub Scout Mesa Pack 11, Nico Holve, Jack Matthews, and Leland Riordan. Cub Scout Matthews led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the National Anthem rendered beautifully by Teen Star Winner, and San Marcos High student, Andie Bronstad. The Yacht Club’s Chaplain, Judith Muller gave the blessing for calm seas and fair winds for all in the year ahead. Commodore Pawlitski began his remarks by eliciting laughter and applause from the crowd with his greeting: “Hello! Please forgive me if I mispronounce your name or any words today. My first language is Canadian!” He then described how, at 36 years old, he made a decision to put his life in Canada on hold to embark on a two year journey around the world on a friend’s catamaran. Needless to say, he didn’t quite make the trip after meeting his wife Suesan in Santa Barbara. They are now the proud parents of two grown children, and proud grandparents of three, and are enjoying the life they always dreamed of living aboard a 53 foot J-160 yacht named Sugar. “We call the Yacht Club our home ... so, I would like to welcome you all into our dining room,” he said glibly. In conclusion, and almost as an aside, Commodore Pawlitski added to resounding applause, “Oh, and incidentally, if all goes according to plan, by this November, just 29 years after sailing into this harbor, I will be a United States citizen.” Following introductions of the visiting yacht clubs and dignitaries, the Commodore officially opened the 2020 racing season, after which the Parade of Fleet circled Sugar in front of the Yacht Club in their honor. By the start of the Opening Day Race, Mother Nature had changed her mind after granting calm winds earlier in the day. The

with so many of the internees, the pain of isolation from the community he loved was locked tightly away in his heart and never revealed to anyone. Incomplete as the stories of the camps may have been, the tone of the internees’ lives during WWII remains intact and resonates in our world today. Their reluctance to speak remains a legacy only partially revealed, but was necessary for them to continue on with their lives. The state of being “the other” isn’t one that fits well in any time or place, but to survive, most of the detainees accepted the emotional pain, placed their years of confinement outside of their daily lives, and found the path back as contributing members of American society. These efforts were rewarded by the 100th Congress through the Civil Liberties Act signed into law on August 10th, 1988 by President Ronald Reagan who granted a formal presidential apology and $20,000 redress to the Japanese American community.

Museum’s Gledhill Library, this reporter had the good fortune to find a seat across the table from Roberta Fujii Cook who revealed that both of her parents and grandparents were relocated to various internment camps during the war years. One of the three daughters of Frank Mitsugu Fujii and his wife Dorothy Nomura from the Imperial Valley, Cook shared that her parents revealed almost nothing about that period in their lives. Although they met and married in the years after the war, she assumes they most likely shared similar experiences in the camps. “My mother was the one from whom I got the little information I know, but my dad said mostly, well, nothing,” explained Cook. This was not unusual for the interned, who often believed that time was best forgotten, in order to move ahead. “My father’s family lived and farmed on the Mesa and my dad attended Santa Barbara Junior and Senior High Schools, and State Teacher’s College on the Riviera,” Cook recalled. “My dad was always a hard working guy and took over the family farm while still in high school when his dad could no longer work. He only left Santa Barbara for the four years he was evacuated to Gila River internment camp in Arizona.” After his release the family worked and lived in Montecito, which eventually led to Frank Fujii’s full time position at Lotusland with Mme. Ganna Walska where together they created the Japanese Garden of her dreams. He remained at Lotusland until his 90th birthday and passed away at the age of 99 in 2016. As was the case

Cottage Health to Open Urgent Care Centers

E ARE OUR BROTHERS’ KEEPER has always been one of the teachings that Christians are to follow, just as Mr. Rogers asked his TV viewers to be his good neighbor, and Martin Luther King, Jr. asked for people to be treated with equality in his many speeches and actions. And now in the age of epidemics, such as Ebola, Zika, SARs, and now the coronavirus, the questsion is, “Can Americans follow such teachings embodied in all world religions—to care for each other in dangerous times that include not just epidemics, but global warming, an overcrowded planet, and growing authoritarian governments that exclude and exploit those they rule, rather than include?” There was news recently that some American cities and states even refused to allow any of the coronavirus victims transported home on a commercial flight to be housed in their quarantine facilities. The Los Angeles Times reported that citizens and officials in Orange County, California and Alabama are resisting efforts to house any of the victims in their facilities; even at military base locations. This is happening in a country that Trump Republicans want to

“Make America Great” in; with a racial trope meant to separate those with white skin from those with brown or black skins, a world of Haves and Have-nots where laws are ignored or manipulated by the powerful over the powerless. News outlets report that since then, the virus has spread outside of China, across Asia, and into Europe, and now into the U.S.A. More than 98,059 people have been infected world-wide and the death toll has risen above 3,356. France has reported new infections and the death of a 60-year old man who was among them, according to the Associated Press. Spain also reported new cases linked to travel to northern Italy, where the number of infected reached 3,089 and deaths rose to 107. And it has traveled to South America, where Brazil recently reported the case of a man who spent two weeks in Italy and returned home to spend time with his family, which means that the flight passengers and family members may have also been exposed to the virus. So will the Trump administration be in any position to deal with this new outbreak, when they have gutted or closed outright Obama administration programs that were set up to fight the last outbreaks?

Neither the NSC nor DHS epidemic teams have been replaced. “The global health section of the CDC was so drastically cut in 2018 that much of its staff was laid off and the number of countries it was working in was reduced from 49 to merely ten. Meanwhile, throughout 2018, the U.S. Agency for International Development and its director, Mark Green, came repeatedly under fire from both the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “And though Congress has so far managed to block Trump administration plans to cut the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by 40 percent, the disease-fighting cadres have steadily eroded as retiring officers go unreplaced.” Is this any way to love thy neighbor, Mr. Trump?

HIS IS A DIFFICULT COLUMN TO WRITE because there is nothing in the past to compare to the horror of Coronavirus. So you'll just get bits and pieces. Although the endless ads for politicians can take a place as a major annoyance, the horror is too strong. Every huge postcard that arrives daily, many a day, reminds me of what it costs and one or two homeless people could have had a meal out of it. And now from food we go to… There was a scene at Lucky's Restaurant a week before last such as has never been seen before. A choir group of 50 Japanese girls on tour in the U.S. were dining there when in walked Katy Perry and her parents Mary and Keith Hudson. Katy was just in town for the one night between her tour travels. Well, the Japanese girls recognized her and started screaming with joy. Lucky's could have been the last inning of the world series! Katy was her usual gracious self Katy Perry at Lucky’s and some of the members and greeted them all and in return, of the Japanese girls choir. the entire choir burst into song, one of Katy's songs of course. It was a night those girls won't forget soon. Now I'll tell you about a Lent story from Spain that is basically unknown in the rest of the world. In fact, it’s not known in all parts of Spain but is told in Catalonia, Spain and parts of Mallorca. It concerns The Old Lady of Lent you see pictured here. In Catalonian, she is La Vella Quaresma. You will notice she has seven feet, based on the seven weeks of Lent, and she carries a big codfish in one hand and a pilgrim's staff in the other. In these areas, there will be a paper version of this picture in every home. And in each home on Sunday, starting the first Sunday of Lent, someone in the family cuts off the first leg and burns it before dinner is served. When only one foot is left, it is burned. The next morning, Easter morning, the whole woman is burned. Then a big party begins celebrating the end of Lent. At these parties, the people eat tender lamb, ribs, and pork in the form of ham and salami all the things they haven't had for 40 days. This way, they can forget Lenten food restrictions and codfish! I'll close by confessing to a fact I didn't know. Julius Caesar is basically responsible for our calendar! I came upon this when checking on the beginning of Leap Year, since it's Leap Day An image from the Catalonian tradition of Lent Quaresma I write this. You all - La Vella Quarema know how I jump from one subject to another when I talk! It appears that Caesar didn't like the confusion of world calendars and once he transformed Rome from a republic to an empire, I guess he had time to concentrate on calendars. He was influenced by the Egyptian solar calendar that featured 365 days and an intercalary month. Well, there were so many complicated little changes… if you are really interested, do Google it. Beverley Jackson moved to SB in 1963 from Los Angeles. She wrote a social column for the SB News-Press from 1968-1992. She also wrote the award winning book Splendid Slippers on Chinese footbinding and five other books on China. She latest book is Dolls of Spain. Jackson is avid doll collector and a collector of interesting people. She is also now seriously making and exhibiting pine needle baskets and collage.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

IMON STEPHENS’ PLAY, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is based on Mark Haddon’s sensational 2003 novel, that went on to win England’s Olivier Award and then to win Broadway’s 2015 Tony Award. It is extraordinary theatre. Set on SBCC’s Garvin Theatre, the stage is empty, all grey, with the outline of an animal on the floor. Soon the mystery is filled with a dead dog speared by a pitchfork and found by our protagonist, 15 year old “Christopher Boone” (Daniel Sabraw, a stunning, ‘home run’ performance), who is soon on a quest to find the killer. He is bright, but he has strong behavioral problems. Christopher’s methodology for finding clues is meticulous and the more he explores, the more we learn about him, his family, and life around him. He is in school and writing everything down - read to us by “Siobhan” (Samantha Eve, a caring narrator/guide). Christopher’s dad, “Ed” (Brian Harwell, again excellent), cares for him and others who cross his path during his sleuthing, including his neighbors: “Mrs. Shears” (Tiffany Story, shining in several roles); “Mrs. Alexander” (Marion Freitag, very strong); and “Roger Shears” (Joseph Beck, fun in many roles), and “Judy” (Clare Carey, rich portrayal), Christopher’s mum, thought dead. Everyone but Christopher plays several roles and are universally excellent. And, they play their parts in a universe that presents itself with sounds and visual effects that play all over the stage, with the actors often portraying objects such as doors, latches, light switches, and many others. Outside Looking In: A Self Identity Clash by Genevieve Gaignard

N IDENTITY CLASH OF RACE, CLASS, GENDER, AND BEAUTY COME TOGETHER in a splendid collection of mixed media art that confronts the complexities of self-identity today. Presented by Genevieve Gaignard, a Los Angeles based mixed media artist, Outside Looking In will be on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art through May 31st. Born from a black father and white mother, Gaignard was faced with conflicting ideas about her identity from a young age. Her experiences pondering questions like, “is her family white enough to be white? Black enough to be black?” led her to explore the inner workings of such complex anxieties and communicate them through a variety of mediums such as photography, mixed media, and installation. Utilizing persona, popular culture, historical imagery, selfie culture, and humor, Gaignard wholeheartedly embraces the complexities of ideas pertaining to blackness, whiteness, femininity, and class. Through her own unique lens and collection of experiences, Gaignard provides viewers with an interesting and even provocative perspective on selfidentity, leaving viewers to ponder their own self-identity. Nathan Huff’s New Show Elicits Latent Emotion Through the Exploration of Home and Domestic Spaces

XAMINING THE WAYS WE INHABIT HOMES AND MOVE THROUGH DOMESTIC SPACES based on memory and emotion, Meandering the Edges will open with a reception at The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara gallery on Friday, March 13th, from 5 to 7pm. An installation of works on paper and sculpture by Nathan Huff, the exhibition is installed in unconventional ways on the walls, floor, and corners of the AFSB’s meeting space/gallery. Visitors will discover Huff’s paintings on paper of furniture, wood floors, tables, and shovels, all drawing attention to the space itself as an important part of the narrative. The Architectural Foundation is housed in a historic Painting by Nathan Huff Victorian Italianate style home designed and built in 1904 by James J. Acheson and hosts the offices of several non-profit organizations including the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Chapter of the AIA, and the Junior League of Santa Barbara. This unique exhibition encourages viewers to muse and meander their way through an ordinary environment transformed by art, inviting them to imagine scenarios and summon lost memories as they go. “As someone fascinated by the stories that reside in our memories and are imbedded in the built environment, I believe that the designed aesthetic of architectural space has a powerful impact on our home life and community structures,” Huff noted. His poetic, provocative images and sculpture are rarely straightforward. Viewers will experience a range of surrealistic styles and installation techniques that slide between the almost comprehensible to the absurd. “I hope that this imagined excavation of home invites viewers towards attentive looking at built environments in new ways, charging them with a range of narrative potential and drawing out latent emotion,” he added. Huff earned an MFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University Long Beach, a BA in art education from Azusa Pacific University, and has also studied art in Italy, France, the UK, and Spain. Huff’s installations have been featured in solo exhibitions at Sullivan Goss Gallery (Santa Barbara), UCR Culver Museum and Sweeney Galleries (Riverside), Los Angeles at D.E.N. Contemporary (West Hollywood), Minthorne Gallery, (Oregon), Gallerie View (Salambo, Tunisa), group exhibitions at JK Gallery (Culver City), Lotusland (Santa Barbara), and the Westmont Ridley Tree Museum of Art (Santa Barbara.) Nathan has taught art at CSU Long Beach, LA Southwest College, Biola University, and Azusa Pacific University as an adjunct lecturer. Currently, he is an associate professor of art at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

Mystic: Inner Exploration Through Magic, Mysteries and Spirituality at Cypress Gallery
