Behind a World Premiere:

A conversation with

Keoni Bolding

MBODYING VIBRANT ENTHUSIASM DURING EVERY CONCERT, Keoni Bolding feels that if one takes pleasure from their music, it shines through their performance. One of the Music Academy of the West’s Duo Competition winners, the 24 yearsold violist will showcase this belief alongside winning pianist Melivia Raharjo in a recital hosted at 7pm on Tuesday, April 5th in Hahn Hall.

There, the pair will perform the world premiere of composer Conrad Tao’s Churn — a piece created with Bolding and Raharjo in mind.

“Learning a world premiere by a composer that’s as celebrated as Conrad is easily the most exciting thing I’ve done in music so far,” shared Bolding. “It’s a massive responsibility, honestly, to be the steward of a brilliant new work, but I know that we’ll bring it to life as best we can.”

Tao ultimately composed a piece for viola and piano titled Churn.

According to Bolding, the piece carries similar energy to many of Tao’s improvisations.

“I enjoy being in the thick of it instead of the top of the range or at the bottom of the range,” explained Bolding. “I feel at home in the middle range.”

“It begins very meditative and thoughtful, and then kind of blossoms into this sweeping, gorgeous chaos in the middle,” explained Bolding. “And then eventually, it winds back down into the meditative thoughtfulness. It’s like a giant arc in that sense.”

In August 2021, Bolding and Raharjo competed at the Granada Theatre for the Music Academy of the West’s Duo Competition for a special honor — the opportunity to perform the world premiere of an Academycommissioned work by Conrad Tao. Since Tao was one of the competition’s judges, he specially composed the piece to meet Bolding and Raharjo’s talents.

Yet this prize came as a complete surprise to Bolding, who does his best to approach all of his music competitions completely ignorant of the prize money or package.

“And so right after we won, Melivia told me that Conrad Tao was going to write a piece for us, and I was like a deer in headlights,” commented Bolding.

He also shared that the pianist’s role is particularly difficult, expressing great admiration for Raharjo’s skill.

“I cannot speak highly enough for Melivia, she is just one of the most exceptional pianists I’ve ever encountered in my life,” said Bolding.

On Tuesday, Bolding and Raharjo will present Churn as part of a program centering around the concept of night (dusk to dawn), including pieces by Debussy, Dvořák, Rebecca Clarke, Arnold Schoenberg, and more. Bolding’s music career began when he was only three years old, when he asked his grandmother for a violin after watching a violinist perform on television. He continued to play throughout his childhood before attending the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings in Macon, Georgia.

There, Bolding discovered the joys of the viola. He especially appreciates playing in an inner voice role when performing chamber music with a string quartet.

The Duo Competition Winners Recital kicks off the Music Academy of the West’s first-ever Competition Winners Recital Series. Each recital will feature the world premiere of an Academycommissioned piece of music created specifically for the performing Summer Festival competition winners.

First, composer Conrad Tao will be in attendance for the Duo Competition Winners Recital at 7pm on Tuesday, April 5th. He will also give a post concert talk on the stage immediately following the concert.

The Solo Piano Competition Winner Recital will feature Hsin-Hao Yang performing an original piece by Tyshawn Sorey at 7pm on Wednesday, April 6th.

Finally, tenor Shawn Roth and pianist Alexander Soloway will present a world premiere by Carlos Simon for the Marilyn Horne Song Competition Recital at 7pm on Thursday, April 7th.

All recitals will take place in Hahn Hall, and include an “Innovation Element,” including lighting, projections, and more.

Young Artist Showcase Honors Local Students

The theme also speaks to the organization’s goal to promote mutual understanding through establishing relationships between cities and communities.

N OUTPOURING OF STUDENT TALENT, ORIGINALITY, AND AWARENESS OF EARTH’S CHANGING CLIMATE dominated the 2022 Sister Cities Young Artist Showcase reception on March 24th. Taking place at the home of Santa Barbara-Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee board members Gil and Marti Garcia, the competition featured dozens of local students’ creative responses to climate change and water conservation. Five artists were awarded cash prizes and will move on to an international art competition.

reflected in their entry. Several works focused on water’s role in maintaining landscapes, others addressed oceans and pollution. The winning pieces depicted a decomposing whale on a drying seafloor, the Earth in a glass of water, a diptych of two possible outcomes for Earth’s future, a koi fish, and an astronaut gazing at a dried planet.

Koury and Hefferman emphasized how difficult it was to choose only five works given the remarkable talent displayed. Ultimately, the pair considered several criteria: theme interpretation, creativity and originality; composition and design; and craftsmanship and skill.

All five pieces will go on to an international competition hosted in Puerto Vallarta as a part of Santa Barbara International Sister Cities’ 50th-anniversary celebrations. SBSC members Kathy Koury and Ann Hefferman judged the submitted works while reception attendees admired entries and visited the Garcia’s art-filled home.

People’s Self-Help Housing Receives California Housing Accelerator Award

N A SIGNIFICANT MOVE TOWARD SUPPORTING AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR FARMWORKER HOUSEHOLDS, People’s Self-Help Housing has been awarded funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s California Housing Accelerator program. Over $923 million in awards for affordable housing projects statewide have been announced. People’s Self-Help Housing’s funding will go toward rehabilitating 65 existing units at Los Adobes de Maria I in Santa Maria.

“People’s is thrilled that our Los Adobes de Maria

I property will receive an investment of $9,963,387 to preserve the affordable housing community for generations of farmworker families to come,” said Veronica Garcia, the Chief Real Estate Development Officer at PSHH. “Los Adobes de Maria I provides affordable housing as well as onsite education and enrichment services to create an environment where families can thrive.”

Originally completed in 1995, Los Adobes de Maria I provides farmworker households permanently affordable housing as a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Section 514 financed property. PSSH’s project to rehabilitate the buildings and campus also recently received an award of HCD Joe Serna Jr Farmworker Housing Grant funds.

Craig Makela Named SB Trust for Historic Preservation Lifetime Director CRAIG MAKELA has been declared a Lifetime Director by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. This is the highest honor the organization bestows, with only 31 individuals receiving the title. An eighth generation Santa Barbara resident, Makela is descended from Presidio soldier Luis Quintero, and previously served as SBTHP President and as a board member for many years. He also founded the Santa Barbara Olive Company and currently oversees Coast Naturals and Oleavicin with his wife, Cindy. Beyond SBTHP, Makela gives back by being active at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

Kenny Loggins and CEC’s UC Climate Stewards Graduates to be Honored with SB Earth Day 2022 Environmental Hero Award

N RECOGNITION OF THEIR OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND WORK BENEFITING THE ENVIRONMENT, singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins and the certified graduates of Community Environmental Council’s UC Climate Stewards program will receive the 2022 Santa Barbara Earth Day Environmental Hero Award. The award presentation will occur during the Santa Barbara Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 23rd, at 2:30pm at the Arlington Theatre.

Singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins “I’m honored to receive this year’s Environmental Hero award from CEC,” said Loggins. “I believe that supporting efforts toward renewable energy, sustainable farming, and environmental equity are critical to our future. I believe that each of us must step up and work together to create the change needed not only to survive, but to thrive.”

In 1995, Loggins performed his song Conviction of the Heart on Earth Day at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for a crowd of 500,000. He has remained a dedicated environmentalist and advocate throughout his career, frequently using his music to support projects with environmental outreach, education, and activism.

This year’s award also honors the certified graduates of CEC’s UC Climate Stewards program, which consists of a 40-hour certification course that reviews the science and psychology of climate change and provides skills necessary to take climate action. In 2021, CEC became the first Central Coast nonprofit to offer this program, and more than 40 individuals are now certified Stewards.

“CEC is proud to showcase these exceptional individuals who have made climate literacy and activism a priority in their busy lives. They are enriching communities with lessons learned from their Capstone projects. Local businesses, nonprofits, and retirement communities are benefitting from these meaningful new ventures that put sustainability front and center.” said Kathi King, Director of Climate Education and Leadership.

SB Botanic Garden to Begin Requiring Reservations April 11th

S

PRING HAS SPRUNG AT THE SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN, leading locals and tourists alike to plan a day exploring the garden’s beautiful pathways and grounds. However, beginning April 11th, visitors must make advance online reservations via the garden’s website. For SBBG members, reservations are not required, but are highly recommended.

“As more and more people realize the benefits of being outside, our visitation is at an all-time high,” said Garden Executive Director Steve Windhager, Ph.D. “Unfortunately, the county has limited our total annual attendance. By adding this reservation system, we can ensure we stay within our county-limited capacity, efficiently manage traffic and parking, and continue to provide a great experience for both our members and our guests visiting from across California – and beyond.”

120,000 people visited the SB Botanic Garden in 2021. This rise in attendance was made possible through the garden requesting a one-time variance due to the pandemic for their Santa Barbara County conditional use permit, which allows for a total of 110,000 visitors per year. This number breaks down to allow 255 visitors at any one time December through April, and 205 in May through November, during fire season.

“During the spring, the Garden often reaches capacity limits and unfortunately, we have to turn away guests. SB Public Library Celebrates Channel Islands Ecology with 2022 Book to Action

I

N AN EFFORT TO INSPIRE AND ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN SUPPORTING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, the Santa Barbara Public Library will kick off its 2022 Book to Action event series this weekend.

Supported by a grant from the California State Library, SBPL will distribute 100 copies of Island Visions edited by Jacob Seigel Brielle and illustrated by Isaac Seigel-Boettner as well as host related community events programming to promote conservation and awareness.

Containing essays and infographics created by environmentalists, scientists, fishermen, and more, Island Visions provides a comprehensive look at the importance of conserving the Channel Islands and its cultural significance. SBPL’s event programming will further these ideas, sharing the Channel Islands’ and our ocean’s ecology, history, and the value of taking collective action to protect them.

The first Book to Action event will be a free poetry workshop held by Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Emma Trelles at Shoreline Park at 2:30pm on Saturday, April 2nd. Featuring SBPL’s Library on the Go van, Trelles will guide participants in writing an acrostic poem inspired by the Channel Islands.

Locals can then learn more about the book itself and how it was created in a free talk with creators Jacob Seigel Brielle and Isaac Seigel-Boettner hosted at Central Library’s Faulkner Gallery at 12pm on Sunday, April 10th.

Copies of Island Visions will be available at Library on the Go visits and other special events through April and June. There is a limit of one copy per family, with locals also having the option of checking it out from the library.

Sir Simon Rattle conjures privateers, prostitutes, the subconscious, and the demise of the waltz - in one evening Review by Daniel Kepl / VOICE

S

ANTA BARBARA, home to the internationally famous Music Academy of the West, and host to concerts by the great orchestras of the world for over a century under the aegis of Community Arts Music Association (CAMA), is a bit spoiled for its population demographic. Still, last week’s mini residency here by the London Symphony Orchestra part of its partnership with the Music Academy since 2018 which continues through this coming summer - confirmed at several levels, the orchestra is clearly among the top half dozen in the world.

Music Director Sir Simon Rattle kicked off the first act of an extended weekend of special events celebrating the Music Academy’s 75th birthday, by conducting a program at the Granada Theatre on March 24th that defied a certain elemental logic about biting off more than one can chew. Berlioz’ treatise on string virtuosity, Overture: Le corsair; Hannah Kendall’s The Spark Catchers; Sibelius’ stunningly complex Symphony No. 7; Bartók’s equally daunting Miraculous Mandarin Suite, and for dessert, Ravel’s La Valse, which a critic at its premiere in 1920 described as a piece that, “plots the birth, decay, and destruction of a musical genre,” were dispatched by conductor and orchestra as mortals might chow down a Big Mac. The evening flew by with the

speed of fast food, yet at the musical level of Le Cordon Bleu.

Last Thursday’s program is locked into the London Symphony’s North American touring repertoire, thus was thoroughly prepared. Yet the breathtaking speed of unison string passagework, the uncanny balance of wind and brass choirs, the apparent immortality of Simon Rattle’s energy, and his insistence on the powers of dynamic contrast, made this meaty, nearly overweight program levitate with technical perfection and artistic savoir faire. World class, alright.

Opening the concert with flash/bang, the LSO’s performance of Berlioz’ Le Corsaire (1844/1852) represented one of those glorious experiences where one sees the players movements, hears the sounds rushing by at breakneck speed, and wonders, is that possible?

Rattle, conducting alternately in two and four, depending on the sweep and flow of the music, clarified a thousand details of harmonic structure and orchestration, while also demanding dynamic and rhythmic subtleties seldom heard in other virtuoso performances of the piece.

British composer Hannah Kendall’s 2017 composition, The Spark Catchers, takes inspiration from Lemn Sissay’s poem by the same name, which he wrote for the 2012 London Olympics.

A single, continuous compositional structure, the work nevertheless has distinct, and distinctly colored, sections: Sparks and Strikes, Molten Madness, Beneath the Stars/In the Silver Sheen, and The Matchgirls’ March. Edgy, repetitive patterns, jagged musical fragments, and moody colors, all in a nimbus of nervous energy, conjured the ghost memory of the Bryant and May match factory that once stood on the 2012 Olympics site, and the nerve-wracking vigilance required of the women who worked there, to avoid the accident of a catastrophic spark. Interesting subject, fascinating realization.

The two largest works on the LSO program last Thursday, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s enigmatic Symphony No. 7 (1924) and a suite from Béla Bartók’s music for a risqué pantomime ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin (1918-1924), would, in and of themselves, be considered the principal major work of most orchestral programs. Together on the same concert, they represented, as mentioned earlier, the world class technical, intellectual, and ensemble capabilities of the London Symphony.

Conducting both massive works from memory, Simon Rattle pulled no punches. His Sibelius was properly Nordic, fog-drenched sonically and psychologically, lush, mysterious, and moody. Rattle’s Bartók, also through-composed with various section titles describing the various seductions of the Miraculous Mandarin story, was a feast of cubist chaos. Both works featured various soloists - an orchestra of chamber musicians.

Perhaps to take the edge off a bit, Ravel’s super-lush La Valse (1919-20), brought the printed program full circle, followed by Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 3, as a jolly encore. Simon Rattle’s conducting throughout - a masterclass.

Grandeur at the Bowl, Intimacy at the Opera Last Saturday night, the Santa Barbara Bowl season opened with a particularly potent homecoming welcome party vibe, the advent of its first full season in two years. Doing the ribbon-cutting honors, with a high and surreally spectacular style, was the returning British sensation alt-J, with no less an opener than the hybrid-rock-soul-carnival act Portugal.

The Man.

Standing on high risers, in a gesture which both embraces and satirizes the “rock Gods” mythology, the band was also surrounded by a vast aquariumlike cube onto which was projected deliciously outrageous visual schemes, varying with each tune. Never mind the old-school notion of light shows and projections as a backdrop: here, the 3-D scheme literally enveloped and recontextualized our winking rock Gods onstage, inspiring a senses-working-overtime glee.

Fueled by dynamic drum beats and blessed with just enough chops from electric guitar and keyboards, alt-J has struck a strong chord in a fractured rock scene, heeding timeless guitar-drums-hooks formulas, but adding quirks along the way. Saturday’s setlist included such hits as U&ME, In Cold Blood, and Left Hand Free, and delectable oddities.

But what made the show extra special, and an antidote for our love of getting out of the house and away from screens, ironically, was the wild visual element. Basically comprised of stage-shy nerds not given to “taking the stage,” the hook-and-rock-history infused power trio has devised a brilliant live performance framework with its current tour.

Just as Opera Santa Barbara bravely adapted to the repressive thick of the COVID lockdown – taking opera to the drive-in, for instance – its current 2021-22 season perpetuates the organization’s innovative, resourceful forward motion. The season which opened with the mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna continued last weekend with an innovative one-act at the Lobero Theatre. Suffice to say, As One – with music and concept by Laura Kaminsky and libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed – is a socio-sexually oriented minimalist gem, in which the leanness of means spans out into multiple dimensions and issues.

At the core of the story is the narrative arc of a man who recognizes the inner woman and goes through a transsexual morphing process. Inventively, but also logically, the his/her role is played by two actor singers (Evan Bravos and Ashley Armstrong, impressive in the dualizing task). As two aspects of the same person, they convey a story at once large and intimate in scope, with the help of a multimedia pastiche on-screen and the hands-on, low-tech and innately nostalgic platform of a literal chalkboard.

Kaminsky’s musical vehicle is a string quartet, conducted by Alexandra Enyart, scored in a mostly tonal, comforting minimalist style—but drawing on dissonant agitation for such suitable moments as a tense sequence addressing anti-LGBTQ hate crimes. Despite the pared-down resources on this 75-minute one-act, As One draws us in and engagingly disperses alternating waves of joy, ostracism, liberation, hate crime, radical escapism, and ultimate personal coming-to-terms, playing out over several segments. Chalk up another memorable outing from OSB. Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

A locally-based nonprofit, Adam’s Angels was launched during the pandemic by Adam McKaig specifically to support people experiencing homelessness.

Four Suspects in Milpas Stabbing Arrested WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23RD - Four suspects from Ventura County and Santa Barbara were arrested after a stabbing homicide the morning of Sunday, March 20th in the 500 block of Milpas Street. Santa Barbara Police caught this suspect on Chino Street on Tuesday, March 22nd. The investigation is ongoing, and, as of last week, not thought to be gangrelated.

City of SB Parks & Rec 2022 Summer Camps to Return to Normal Operations

City of Santa Barbara’s Parks and Recreation Department prepares to return to normal operations for its 2022 summer camp programming.

Schedules are currently available for online viewing, with general registration opening at 9am on Wednesday, April 6th.

Junior Guard registration will open at 9am on Tuesday, April 5th.

Isla Vista County Beaches Closed April 1st-2nd Due to Return of Deltopia Street Party

SLA VISTA BEACHES WILL BE CLOSED FRIDAY, APRIL 1ST THROUGH SATURDAY, APRIL 2ND due to the return of Deltopia this weekend. Originally called “Floatopia,” Deltopia is an unsanctioned street party that takes place in Isla Vista near the start of UC Santa Barbara’s spring term each year.

“Following the “Floatopia” event of 2009, the beaches at Isla Vista were left strewn with trash and debris, including human waste,” read the County of Santa Barbara’s announcement. “This large-scale event with thousands of participants had no provision for the health and well-being of the public, including no facilities for human sanitation or refuse collection. The County of Santa Barbara, therefore acted to close the Isla Vista beaches for similar events since 2010 in order to prevent harm to the environment.”

The County Community Services Department will post the Isla Vista beaches as closed to public entry, and the County Sheriff ’s Department will enforce the closure.

To ensure harmful chemicals and unwanted electronics are properly thrown away, the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department will be hosting its April Household Hazardous Waste Event from 9am to 2pm on Sunday, April 3rd. Collection will take place at the County’s Santa Ynez Valley Recycling and Transfer Station, located at 4004 Foxen Canyon Road in Los Olivos, and be open to residents in the county’s unincorporated areas and the city of Solvang.

Residents can drop off common household items, such as automotive fluids, cleaners, paint, pesticides, and batteries, as well as home-generated “sharps” such as needles and syringes. These sharps must be placed in rigid, punctureproof containers. Individuals can also turn in unwanted electronics, including computers and televisions. All items should be kept easily accessible in the back of participants’ cars to promote contact-free drop-offs.

Lagerville Beer Fest to Host National and International Breweries

VER 40 BREWERIES, RANGING FROM SANTA BARBARA COUNTY TO MUNICH, GERMANY, will share their fine crafted drinks with the local community as Lagerville Beer Fest returns to Buellton’s Figueroa Mountain Brewing from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, April 9th. Founded in 2018, the festival highlights lager as a cherished yet too often underappreciated beverage, and will also feature live music and food.

“While IPAs take over the shelves and crowd the taps, the wide range of styles that fit under the lager category offer a level of complexity that beer drinkers have been looking for,” reads Figueroa Mountain Brewing’s festival announcement. “The festival is expected to bring out the best pilsners, bocks, dunkels, helles, and more from the participating brewers.”

Attendees will be able to cast votes identifying their favorite drink during the festival, with a people’s choice award being presented to the winning brewery.

Participating breweries include Long Beach’s Beachwood Brewing, Santa Rosa-based Russian River Brewing, Munich’s Hofbräu München, and more. Locally, Figueroa Mountain Brewmaster Kevin Ashford has teamed up with Enegren Brewing and Urban Roots Beer to create a beer called “Lagerville,” which is based on the Czech-style dark lager called Tmavé Pivo.

Psychedelic funk band The New Vibe and DJ Hecktik will provide live music. Food trucks will include Sassafrass, Bello Catering, and more.

SB Airport Begins Remediation Project at 2019 Aircraft Accident Site

O REMOVE CONTAMINATED SOIL from a non-injury accident of a privately operated C-130 aircraft that took place August 25th, 2019, the Santa Barbara Airport will begin a remediation project on Tuesday, April 5th. The project will continue nightly Sundays through Thursdays, from 12:01am to 5am, through the beginning of June.

The project will be led by professional environmental services organization Langan Corporation, and all excavated soil will be taken to Kettleman City for disposal. It is not anticipated that the project will impact normally scheduled airport operations or commercial air service.

Hires edged up to 6.7 million while total separations were little changed at 6.1 million. The number of job openings were up 43 percent year-over-year, a very good sign.

This should tell us there will be a strong official employment number Friday, because so-called quits were up 27 percent yearover-year, which is a sign that workers are finding better jobs.

These are voluntary separations.

Tuesday’s JOLTS survey of available jobs reported there were still 11.3 million job openings.

The ‘other’, University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey was not so upbeat. It said its respondents think inflation will remain high over the next year but come down to a more normal level over the next five years.

“Consumer Sentiment remained largely unchanged in late March at the same diminished level recorded at mid-month,” said U of Michigan chief economist Richard Curtin. “Inflation has been the primary cause of rising pessimism, with an expected yearahead inflation rate at 5.4 percent, the highest since November 1981.”

The difference in short and long term outlooks is remarkable and why the Federal Reserve believes higher inflation is transitory, based more on a shortage of products rather than

soaring wage inflation, which would be a sign of the dreaded stagflation that occurred during the 1970s.

So, should policy makers be worried more about the shortterm, rather than long-term inflation outlook?

Worrying too much about near term trends can lead to hasty actions, like raising interest rates prematurely to restrict available credit when there’s the possibility of a prolonged war in the Ukraine and we need markets to be as liquid as possible to weather the storm.

Harbor VOICE Exploring Santa Barbara Landing

NE OF THE FUN THINGS ABOUT WRITING THIS COLUMN IS WHERE IT LEADS ME. I may start out on the road to investigate one thing only to discover another! That’s what happened this week. I was curious to learn more about the cruise ships’ coming and going – last week’s column piqued my interest. How did all of this work, I asked myself?

Driving down Cabrillo Boulevard, I looked out to sea and yet another cruise ship was anchored offshore: cones designed to secure the pedestrian area for arriving guests were in place. Ahha... the perfect opportunity to check out the entire operation!

The tenders’ coming and going from offshore seemed to be headed in the direction of the Santa Barbara Landing, just the place for me to investigate in ‘‘real Another cruise ship visited Santa Barbara’s shores last week time.”

Talk about Grand Central Station, that was it – a West Coast nautical version with ramps instead of tracks! The covered walkway to the landing was equipped with two designated lanes, the left lane was for returning cruisers with a tray of refreshments awaiting them under the eyes of watchful security guards. The other lane was for the rest of us! As I arrived, most of the foot traffic was from the Condor Express’ whale watchers both disembarking and embarking for the last trip of the day.

Squeezing between the visitors, I entered the office of the Santa Barbara Landing where tickets, water sports, and goodies were to be purchased. The place was jammed!

Just like a little kid, my attention was immediately diverted from the cruise ship to the activities at the Santa Barbara Landing, formerly known as the Sea Landing.

And of course, I wanted to know more. Luck was on my side as I had the good fortune to meet John Tennant, one of the owners, who informed me that before the ownership changed last year, the Waterfront Department put out a request for proposal presentations from John Tennant, one of Santa potential operators in a search to seek offers nationwide.

Barbara Landing’s owners A team made up of city staff and managers went over the submissions and after weeks of review it was decided that Santa Barbara Landing LLC – a partnership of previous Sea Landing tenants – had the most viable proposal and would provide a seamless transition. “We already had the bones of the operation because we were already here,” explained Tennant, “so a partnership was formed between four of us to purchase the property.”

The partnership includes the Stardust Sportfishing vessels Stardust and Coral Sea, Channel Islands Expeditions’ vessels Vision and Truth, Dive Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara Jet-Ski Rentals. The Condor Express Whale Watching, also a huge draw to the area, is a tenant. At present, the Santa Barbara Landing has kayak & SUP rentals along with a fully stocked bait and tackle shop. renovations are planned over the next two years, including retail space, a coffee shop, a fishing center to host fishing seminars, scuba classes, and more. Now folks, I’d say that’s a happenin’ place!

Looks like the waterfront community is definitely coming out of a two year slumber!

Not an easy transition for anyone, but certainly an encouraging sign for the summer days ahead, both economically as well as socially. The Waterfront Department is doing its best to balance the various schedules of the harbor and waterfront areas in our Renewed Normal time. As Mike Wiltshire, the Waterfront Department’s director reminded me regarding the Santa Barbara’s water related traffic, “Accepting ship visits in the non-peak tourist times, with a strong focus on mid-week visits, the cruise ship program provides a great positive economic boost to numerous local businesses. The Waterfront has a great working relationship with the cruise lines and aims to stay flexible going forward to best match the needs of the community. [Enjoy] our boats and yachting, visit with our crews, learn to fish, and so much more.” So that’s all folks... now get ready for summer!

La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts (LCCCA) has a vision of being a haven for members of the community seeking to connect with their unique creative voice. The center fills a void in the art community by providing affordable studio and gallery spaces, classes, guidance, and resources for artists striving to reach the summit of their creative and professional journeys.

EXPERIENCE A BRUSH WITH INSPIRATION at La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts by visiting Inspired by Van Gogh, a juried exhibition of small images in each of the three galleries at the center.

On view through April 3rd, the exhibition was juried by Thomas Van Stein and organized by gallery artists, under the experienced hand of Marie Arnold and gallery volunteers.

Over 40 area and center artists entered 70 plus works for Van Stein’s consideration.

After sharing his critiques of various pieces he selected, each artist with work in the exhibition is taking a turn showing off how Van Gogh continues to inspire them.

LCCCA also created opportunities for children to share the inspiration, with student artists learning about Van Gogh and creating inspiring works of their own. The Childrens Van Gogh Art Workshop was held on the 20th of March 2022. and included children aged five to 12 years old.

ITH ITS RICH, DEEP COLORS AND SWIRLING, BEAUTIFULLY CHAOTIC BRUSHSTROKES, Vincent van Gogh’s painting Hospital at Saint-Rémy depicts the mental hospital where he created the majority of his most memorable works. Included in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s exhibition, Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources, the painting also reflects two key, repeated elements in Van Gogh’s art. As explained by historian Sjraar van Heugten’s commentary in the exhibition’s catalogue, Van Gogh was inspired to utilize prominent, “rhythmic” brushstrokes in the work after seeing Eugène Delacroix’s painting Jacob Wrestling with the Angel.

The painting also highlights how Van Gogh placed great emphasis on trees across his works, opting to, as van Heugten writes, “anthropomorphize them.” This move derived from Van Goghs’ deep love of nature.

“Sometimes I long so much to do landscape, just as one would for a long walk to refresh oneself, and in all of nature, in trees for instance, I see expression and a soul, as it were,” Van Gogh wrote to his brother in 1882.

Sip & Paint a Van Gogh A

OCALS WILL GET A FEEL FOR VINCENT VAN GOGH’S ARTISTIC VISION and process when they sign up for Sip & Paint A Van Gogh, a series of classes at the Paseo Nuevo presented in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s exhibit, “Through Vincent’s Eyes.”

Taught by local artist and Paseo Nuevo’s Marketing Coordinator Danielle Renée Methmann of Danielle Renée Art, each class is set around one of Van Gogh’s more famous works, Starry Night (March 26th), Sunflowers (April 30th), Almond Blossoms, (May 21) and will include step by step instruction, and stories about the artist’s life.

“Each class will learn about Vincent’s iconic painting style, mediums, techniques, fun facts about the artist, and then the final application onto canvas to create their very own Van Gogh,” Methmann shared. Some of the fun facts “The fun facts include his history, relationships with other French artists, and the “lifestyle he indulged in.”

Danielle Renée has been teaching Sip & Paint classes for some time at locations around Santa Barbara County - including painting with wine. She has been working Paseo Nuevo for the last three years.

She is looking forward to hosting this, her first Danielle Renée Methmann class at Paseo Nuevo, and will award two free tickets to of Danielle Renée Art Paseo Nuevo social media followers, with the winner announced Thursday, March 24th at noon.

Wine can add a fun and improvisational element to the Sip & Paint experience for those old enough to give it a try. “Wine plays a significant role in the creative process and has for hundreds of years,” Danielle Renée explained. “Those of age, will receive a complimentary glass of wine to sip during the class to open our creative side; it also brings down our own insecurities and allows the creative flow to come out easier when the road blocks are out of the way.”

The results of the experience, according to Methmann are positive: “In every class I teach there is at least one person who discovers how much talent they really encompass and are inspired to continue their own artistic outlets.”

These classes may be the perfect way to re-enter the current public space in a creative way. “It’s exciting to see so many people interested in art and recreating famous artwork together, in person... The exhibition is proving to be a great vehicle for the community-wide events in conjunction with SBMA stunning exhibit. Visitors walking through Paseo Nuevo are making the connection with an eagerness to see and do all the Van Gogh’esque events,” Methmann concluded.

Each class costs $55 and is held from 1 to 3pm at 311 Paseo Nuevo, next to Aveda.

S COMMUNITY MEMBERS ANTICIPATE THE RETURN OF SUMMERTIME’S SUNNY DAYS AND WARM WEATHER, local artists are invited to direct their creativity toward designing the poster and t-shirt for the 2022 Summer Solstice Celebration. Entries should represent and respond to the celebration’s theme of “Shine,” with all submissions due by 5pm on Friday, April 8th.

This summer will mark the return of Santa Barbara’s 48th annual Summer Solstice parade and festival.

The parade is currently scheduled to begin at noon on June 25th, with the Solstice Festival taking place on June 24th and 25th in Alameda Park. The Dancers along State Street during the 2016 Summer Solstice Parade Solstice Workshop will open to community members on May 11th at the Community Arts Workshop, located at 631 Garden St. Since 1974, thousands of people across Santa Barbara County and beyond have enjoyed the parade and festival, celebrating creativity, community, and summertime.

Highlights include beautiful floats, music, and an abundance of fun costumes and outfits worn by attendees.

Local artists interested in creating the 2022 Summer Solstice Celebration poster and t-shirt should submit .jpg files to solstice@solsticeparade.com prior to April 8th. Entries are limited to two submissions per artist, and must be family-friendly.
