American Son Hits Home T IS DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE A PLAY MORE TIMELY AND RELEVANT THAN AMERICAN SON. Presented through April 24th by the Ensemble Theatre Company at the New Vic, and directed by Jonathan Fox, this intimately cast drama invites viewers to witness a series of raw, powerful conversations addressing the racism entrenched within American society. Viewers are left with insights that will inform their worldviews long after the stage darkens.

Set in the present day, American Son unfolds in a Miami police station. For 90 tense minutes, audiences sit with Kendra (Tracey A. Leigh), a Black mother desperately struggling to obtain information about her missing son, Jamal, who was stopped in a police traffic stop. Her anxiety increases as Officer Paul Larkin (Toby Tropper), a young white officer, refuses to answer her questions while asking pointed questions that expose his internalized racism.

When Kendra’s estranged white husband, FBI agent Scott Connor (Jamison Jones), arrives, Larkin assumes he’s a superior officer. As Connor discusses Jamal’s situation with Kendra, he reacts negatively to his son’s attempts to explore his identity as a young Black man; revealing that he also holds internalized prejudices. A fast-paced drama ensues, examining the role racism plays in American policing and society at large.

Originally, Ensemble Theatre Company intended to present American Son in April 2020, prior to the murder of George Floyd and countless Black Lives Matter protests sweeping the nation. Accordingly, in preparing to finally produce this play, the company contacted playwright Christopher Demos-Brown, who updated the script.

These additional references cement American Son as a crucial, evolving work of art — an aspect that simultaneously reflects the text’s merit and speaks to the racism permeating American culture and its justice system. The work’s brutal honesty serves as a powerful reminder that neither this

Leigh’s performance serves as the play’s driving force, as she embodies Kendra’s love, fear, and fierce determination as she attempts to share her perspectives. She also conveys increasing frustration as her male counterparts repeatedly indicate she is getting too emotional, and that she is somehow at fault for Jamal’s being stopped — speaking to her unique struggles as a Black woman.

As Scott, Jones plays a confused father who loves his son, but ultimately reveals his own biases as he judges Jamal’s forms of self-expression and expects him to follow in his footsteps by enlisting in West Point. He attempts to bond with Larkin, who Tropper faithfully represents as an officer who hides behind “policy” to avoid confrontation, emphasizing his ignorance to show how internalized racism hurts people. Alex Morris’ portrayal of Lieutenant John Stokes adds further nuance, providing the perspective of a Black officer who wrestles with his career and the realities of living as a Black man in America.

Voting Begins For Coast Village Community Benefit Improvement District

COAST VILLAGE PROPERTY OWNERS moved one step closer to forming a community benefit district Wednesday, when formation ballots were mailed to 115 parcel property owners in the proposed Improvement District.

The desire for additional and special improvements for Coast Village road has been the force behind the property based formation effort for a number of years, which has been facilitated by the Coast Village Association. Special improvement districts are formed when neighborhoods need or want better or more services than a city provides.

“The Coast Village Association has worked for decades to support the businesses and property owners in the area, the proposed Coast Village CBID is a significant step forward in their efforts for continued investment and improvements to this important neighborhood in the city,” stated Jason Harris, Santa Barbara City’s Economic Development Manager in an announcement.

The City of Santa Barbara loaned the

CVA $30,000 to encourage the formation of the district and pay for some of the consulting costs.

The new district would repay the loan and fund enhanced maintenance, improvements, marketing, and other services around Coast Village Road, which is owned by the city. These special benefits to the area would be above and beyond the general benefits like landscaping, street cleaning, police protection, currently provided by the city.

Properties owners would pay district fees through property tax statements and will have the ability to pass on these fees to lease holders, by way of triple net leases. Each property owner will decide how to pay their assessment individually, according to Harris.

Formation of the district by property owners, who by state law will hold a majority vote of 51 percent of the new organization, along with merchants and residents that make up the board, will structure a fee formula for everyone for the additional services. The Coast Village Association plans to form a public benefit

First 5 SB County Offers Innovation and Capacity Building Grants

REA NONPROFITS, SCHOOLS, AND INSTITUTES OF HIGHER LEARNING THAT SERVE CHILDREN BETWEEN BIRTH TO AGE FIVE and their caregivers are invited to apply for grant funding from the First 5 Santa Barbara County Commission for Children and Families. Fiscal year 2022-23 grants to address social justice and equity are available.

“Systems often are the holders of inequities,” said Wendy Sims Moten, Executive Director of First 5 Santa Barbara County. “We must do more than close gaps and point to disparities. We must look critically at all facets of our organizations as we strive in all of our work to achieve social and race equity, a state in which all children have the same opportunity to reach the potential we know they have.”

The commission will award up to six Look Ahead Innovation grants in the amount of $2,500 for “think tank” opportunities to investigate equity and social justice issues that could create a change in practice/operational procedures within an organization or community.

Applications can be submitted at any time during the fiscal year, but all projects must be completed by June 1st of the fiscal year awarded. $45,000 in Capacity Building grants are available for supporting short-term organizational-wide change efforts. Grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to build up the leadership or staff capacity of an organization via professional or leadership development activities including training, conferences, or certifications, with all activities needing to pertain to equity and/or social justice. Application deadlines are June 6th, 2022.

Express grants are available for one-time projects or materials that support community-based organizations in maintaining, expanding, or improving their ability to serve children and families from birth through age five. Applications can be submitted once a year for up to $10,000.

A simple majority of the returned weighted ballots is required for the Coast Village CBID to be formed and then enhanced services to the district will commence in 2023. Ballots are required to be submitted no later June 7, 2022. Then the City Council will conduct a public hearing to open and count the submitted ballots.

The Coast Village Association in conjunction with businesses and property owners in the area initiated efforts in 2020.

The Coast Village CBID area is comprised of approximately five to six square blocks with 115 parcels owned

by 94 property owners generally along the Coast Village Road and Los Patos Way area. The total first year assessment revenue in the proposed CBID is $296,749 and the district would have an initial term of five years.

The City of Santa Barbara has an enabling ordinance which allowed the Coast Village Association to issue petitions in January, 2022 to all property owners in the proposed Coast Village CBID. Signed petitions were received that met the minimum threshold were submitted by property owners in favor of moving the formation effort forward to a ballot vote.

Following this effort, the City Council reviewed and unanimously adopted the management district plan and engineer’s report for the Coast Village CBID and directed the City Clerk to mail ballots.

SB Public Library Forgives All Outstanding Fines and Fees

N A LANDMARK MOVE FOR LOCAL READING AND COMMUNITY ACCESS TO LIBRARY RESOURCES, the Santa Barbara City Council approved a proposal to forgive outstanding fines and fees for Santa Barbara Public Library accounts. This step will facilitate the library’s transition to using a new catalog.

SBPL ceased charging late fees for overdue library materials in an effort to promote equity and access in July 2019. However, existing fees and fines remained on patrons’ accounts, with the fine limit being reduced from $24.99 to $9.99 when overdue fees were canceled. Through this new action, patrons who had their account blocked from checking out new materials will have a fresh start beginning Friday, April 15th.

“Many of these outstanding fines and fees are more than four years old, and many are simply overdue fines for a couple of items that together exceed the $10 limit,” said Jessica Cadiente, Library Director. “Giving community members a fresh start as we migrate accounts to a new catalog system allows them the opportunity to return to the library, and is in line with the Library’s mission of reducing barriers to access.”

SBPL will continue charging replacement cost fees if an item is not returned within 30 days of being due, waiving fees if it’s returned before being 60 days overdue.

NSPIRED BY HIS TALENTED FAMILY AND FAMOUS MUSICIANS, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who has skyrocketed to international stardom, will perform with his pianist sister, Isata Kanneh-Mason, in a recital at Campbell Hall next Tuesday, April 19th at 7pm, hosted

by UCSB Arts & Lectures.

gained renown as winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition (the first Black musician to take the title), then captured the music world’s heart after his performance at the 2018 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who currently live in Montecito. In 2020, he was appointed a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and became the first cellist in history to hit the U.K. Top 10 chart. Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason is the recipient of a 2021 Leonard Bernstein Award and a 2020 Opus Klassik award for best young artist.

Isata Kanneh-Mason’s debut album, Romance, drew popular and critical acclaim, entering the UK classical charts at No. 1 when it was released in July 2019 and leading Gramophone magazine to extol the recording as “one of the most charming and engaging debuts” and Classic FM to praise Isata as “a player of considerable talent.” Isata recorded the all-Clara Schumann disc for Decca Classics as an homage to the composer and pianist in the year of what would have been her 200th birthday. She studied with Joanna MacGregor and Carole Presland at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

Sheku, 23, who has six brothers and sisters that he has performed with, grew up in Nottingham, England. He is the son of Stuart Mason and Dr. Kadiatu Kanneh.

Leading up to Tuesday’s concert, Sheku and his entire family will be staying in Antigua, where he is working with the Antigua

and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra. Sheku helped set up this program, which will perform on Saturday before he leaves. He took the time to be interviewed by VOICE Magazine from Antigua, offering these thoughts.

VOICE: how does it feel to be a young musician working in the classical music world?

Sheku: Well, I really enjoy being a classical musician… I get to travel to lots of places, and play for lots of different audiences.

It’s always a challenge… and it has changed over the past ten to 15 years, and definitely accelerated during the pandemic… but I have found that very interesting. There are lots of exciting things happening, and I’m glad to be a part of it.

VOICE: I understand that your family is very musical and you play together sometimes. So do you do have a favorite song that you like to perform with your family?

Sheku: I love performing Rachmaninoff ’s Sonatas for Cello and Piano... and I’ve played that and recorded it a lot with my sister. I would say that would be one of my favorites.

Sheku: I think the thing that I focus on most in my practice is trying to communicate as vividly and clearly as possible the story, or the emotion, or the structure, or any sort of information that’s going to cause an emotional response to the audience – trying to communicate that as vividly as possible. That’s why it takes a lot of time and thought.

VOICE: What’s your artistic process like when you’re approaching a new piece, when you’re trying to capture and envision that emotional response?

Sheku: A lot of the most telling information is found in harmony, so I spend a lot of time looking at the harmony and the phrasing… that’s a very telling part of the music.

VOICE: What do you love about the music that you’re going to be performing in Santa Barbara?

Sheku: I believe the feelings in all the pieces can be found between the lines… being very fragile, particularly in the Bridge sonata, there’s something very special about some phrases that are incredibly determined, and add very heartbreakingly and feel very fragile, and I think that’s a special quality.

The program does work very well… I think there are lots of interesting connections between the pieces of music; for example: one of the pieces is championed or dedicated to one of my favorite cellists, Mstislav Rostropovich, with the Britten sonata. And there are recordings of Rostropovich performing the Britten and the Shostakovich sonatas - both of those composers - and so those are two performances I was really inspired by. Britten being a student of Frank Bridge also provides a nice connection in that half of the program as well.

Concert Review: Jennifer Koh and Davóne Tines, Everything Rises, at Campbell Hall, April 13th

Taking Stock of Life, Art, Roots, and Race N THE TENDER PROLOGUE of Everything Rises, a remarkable and admirably unclassifiable project given its world premiere at Campbell Hall on Tuesday, we catch sight and sound of two different visions of violinist Jennifer Koh. There she is in archival footage onscreen, as a precocious teenager playing, projecting premature mastery with an orchestra, and there she was, in very present tense and deep into her career as a contemporary music legend, standing statuesquely and silently onstage.

With this deceptively calm opening, “then” met a very specific “now.”

The meeting was a dramatic one, related to this unique work’s exploration of roots, racial tensions, and the challenges faced by people of color in the classical music universe. Koh’s project co-creator, bass-baritone Davóne Tines, appears onstage, half-ghostly, in a tuxedo and a blindfold (which he soon traded for feminine garb matching Koh’s) and wraps tones around the violinist’s spare lines. It’s as if they’re getting to know each other before the full measure of this composite piece unfolds, an onstage corollary to the actual experience of the pair’s creative process, going back five years.

Koh’s conceptual brilliance has graced Santa Barbara venues for over a decade, courtesy of her long-standing relationship with and commissioning generosity of UCSB Arts & Lectures. A&L director Celesta Billeci has been keen to give voice and forums to Koh’s expansive ideas. A pinnacle of the current local concert season, Tuesday’s premiere amounted to something extra special in Koh’s Santa Barbaran legacy, with a significance bold enough to warrant a New York Times preview feature last weekend, a historic rarity for any Santa Barbara-based event.

Originally slated for a premiere in 2020, pandemic strictures delayed the premiere until this week. Ironically, the rise of the tragedies feeding into the “Black Lives Matter” movement and violence against Asians in the wake of COVID have only added loaded relevance to the work. Explosive current events in the time of COVID are left out the discussion in the hour-long piece, but timely implications simmer beneath the surface.

Tines’ opening piece is Game of Recognition, which traces the origin story as well as the sympatico and collaborative process with Koh in five telling lines: “two outcasts/on an island/we find each other/parallel histories/heavy is the tree.”

While Everything Rises makes a point to speak truth and raise questions on the rarely-voiced subject of racism within white-driven Eurocentric classical culture, the focus zooms in and out to expand the frame of reference. Segments spotlight the post-slavery and Jim Crow circumstances faced by Tines’ grandmother Alma Lee Gibbs and Koh’s mother Gertrude Soonja Lee’s pained saga of life during Korean wartime and through immigration to the U.S.

Visually, production and set designer Hana S. Kim deftly balanced the real world frictions and a poetic melding of resources. The opening screen backdrop morphs from a stately western classical frieze image – symbol of the western classical atmosphere of choice

– to varied abstractions and fleeting allusions to historical atrocities, from war to the shameful heritage of black life in America, from slavery forward to our powderkeg “now.”

Musically, composer Ken Ueno (part of an all-BIPOC creative team) purposefully goes eclectic. For violin and vocal parts as well as occasional prerecorded electronic pads and passages, Ueno draws on a diverse palette which he described in Tuesday’s post-performance stage talk as “codeswitching.” The process, he explained, is in keeping with the assimilation tactics required of immigrants and people of color working within white-dominated realms. The music shifts from agitated atonal segments to minimal, lyrical, and bittersweet asides, and even a post-soul-gospel palette for Tines’ Amen. His fragmented and fresh arrangement of the haunting lynching song Strange Fruit was as emotionally fraught as the soothing strains of the finale Better Angels allows for a graceful, redemptive finale.

By that point, Koh and Tines had moved to the lip of the stage, with the house lights on to accentuate a tighter bond with the audience. After having cathartically navigated soul-bearing and personal history-accessing through the hour-long piece, the pair seemed to have landed in a tranquil denouement.

It appeared they had made a wary peace with ongoing inward tensions, eased by “the better angles of our nature.” Still, the socio-racial struggle continues, and has been well-served by this innovative project.

URGING ABOVE THE WATER TO GREET SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL WHALE WATCHERS, humpback whales regularly makes appearances in local waters spring through the start of fall. Weighing approximately 40 tons and spanning up to 60 feet in length, these majestic giants live between 80 to 90 years, swimming thousands of miles each year to feed and give birth to their calves. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, some North Pacific A breaching humpback whale humpback whales can journey the 3,000 miles between Alaska to Hawaii in only 28 days. Many whales remain relatively close to shore, making them a friendly sight for area whale watchers as they surface for air and wave their tails over the water.

Introducing the 2022 Spirits of Fiesta

ITH A SWIRL OF SKIRTS, TAPPING FEET, AND A SWELL OF MUSIC, the 2022 Spirits of Fiesta made their Santa Barbara community debut as they competed alongside 17 other local dancers for this honor. Presented by Old Spanish Days, over 500 people filled the Lobero Theatre to view the contestants’ stunning audition performances.

Ultimately, Tara Mata, a Santa Barbara City College sophomore, was named the 2022 Spirit of Fiesta. Layla Gocong, a third-grader at Crane Country Day School, will perform as the 2022 Junior Spirit of Fiesta.

Designating a local dancer as the Spirit of Fiesta dates back to 1949, with the choosing of a Junior Spirit of Fiesta beginning in 1965. Together, these dancers serve as the ambassadors of Fiesta, welcoming parade and event attendees with style and grace.

“They represent not only Old Spanish Days — they represent their families, the dance community, and the community at large because they are all from Santa Barbara County,” commented Patricia Oreña, Old Spanish Days’ Chief of Dance & Entertainment.

Given this, the Spirit of Fiesta auditions is one of the most popular kick-off events leading up to each summer’s Old Spanish Days. This was the second consecutive year the auditions were held in the Lobero Theatre, which has been connected to Old Spanish Days festivities since they began in 1924.

Prior to their dance auditions, the Spirit of Fiesta contestants are interviewed to determine their ability to act as two of the principal ambassadors of Fiesta. Following

this, the entire community is invited to witness the final dance auditions, where three anonymous expert judges evaluate the performers’ techniques, musicality, and overall skill.

This year, eight individuals competed in the Spirit of Fiesta category, and eleven competed for the title of Junior Spirit. All contestants displayed remarkable dedication and energy, speaking to the depth of talent found throughout Santa Barbara County’s dance community. Before the final decision was made, 2021 Spirit Ysabella Yturralde and Junior Spirit Savannah Hoover performed one final time before attendees.

2022 La Presidente Maria Cabrera announced the winners, naming 19 years-old 2022 Spirit of Fiesta Tara Mata Tara Mata as Spirit following her dancing of a Cantinas. An Old Spanish Days participant since the age of five, Mata hopes to ultimately become a nurse.

“Becoming the Spirit of Fiesta has been a lifelong dream that has guided me to become the person I am today,” shared Mata in her written statement submitted to Old Spanish Days prior to the audition.

Nine years-old Layla Gocong most enjoys studying drama and math class at Crane Country Day School. She danced a Tanguillo for her audition.

“I want to be Junior Spirit of Fiesta because I love to dance and perform for people,” Gocong wrote in her statement. “Old Spanish Days is a way for all of Santa Barbara to gather and celebrate Fiesta traditions.”

The 2022 Old Spanish Days celebration will take place from August 3rd through 6th.

HE BRILLIANCE AND PROMISE of the next generation of gifted classical musicians took center stage during the Music Academy of the West’s Competition Winners Recital Series last week.

Spanning three nights, participants channeled their passion for music and performance across unique programs that highlighted their individual talents and featured world premieres written by modern composers Conrad Tao, Tyshawn Sorey, and Carlos Simon with them in mind.

Duo Competition Winners Violist Keoni Bolding (‘20, ‘21) and pianist Melivia Raharjo (‘20, ‘21) kicked off the series with a program examining the concept of night from dusk through dawn. From their plaintive beginning of Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, through impassioned renditions of Florence Price’s Night and Schoenberg’s Her Dark Gaze Drowns in Moonlight from Transfigured Night, the pair’s musical chemistry shone.

Bolding’s viola sang with emotion as he seamlessly transitioned from full-bodied, dynamic chords to gentle pizzicato. Raharjo met and magnified Bolding’s energy at every turn, demonstrating the piano’s both supportive and solo powers. Combined with projected lights reminiscent of the moon and stars, and poetry excerpts, the concert was a transportive experience.

Tao’s Churn perfectly showcased the pair’s talents, as Bolding and Raharjo harmonized

to realize the piece’s crescendos. Once the final note rang out, Tao himself jumped onstage to thank the musicians.

“I wrote the piece in part just out of what was going through my mind at the time of composition, but also I wrote that piece having heard their playing before, and that was a lovely, luxurious position to be in because I feel like music-making — whether writing or performing — is just more satisfying when you have a human connection with the ultimate sound,” Tao shared in an interview prior to the performance.

Solo Piano Competition Winner Hsin-Hao Yang (‘20, ‘21) continued the series, demonstrating range and precision with a program of lively yet intricate works.

Starting with Busoni’s Toccata and later Selections from Preludes, Op. 28 by Nikolai Kapustin, Yang married chords and melody to craft wordless narratives evoking joy and reflection before shifting to a playful, jazzier rendition of Kapustin’s Selections from Preludes, Op. 28.

The recital concluded with a fantastical, audiovisual journey through Dante’s Divine Comedy. As Yang fervently played Liszt’s Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata, an animated video created by his brother, Tzu-Mu Yang, led viewers through Dante’s envisionments, rife with prostrate forms before a final, shining light.

The series culminated with Lehrer Vocal Institute Marilyn Horne Song Competition winners: tenor Shawn Roth (‘19, ‘20, ‘21) and pianist Alexander Soloway (‘19, ‘20, ‘21). Immediately, the duo launched into the world premiere of Simon’s Vocalise, which forgoes lyrics in favor of vocalizations. Roth’s voice soared with each note, highlighting his range while Soloway’s ardent accompaniment added emotional depth.

“One of the most fun parts of this whole thing has been about discovering different moments in the music,” explained Roth. “Because one of the challenges that we’re faced with, with a brand new work, is that we can’t really reference any other performances of it yet, so we have to be our own pioneers and create those colors that might not be super obvious on the page.”

His world premiere of Sorey’s For James Primosch, in memoriam, departed from this tone, as Yang placed equal attention to singular notes and the silence between them to represent feelings of grief following composer Primosch’s 2021 death.

O might those sighes and teares from The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, and later Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op. 39. Roth aptly juxtaposed poignancy and hopefulness through his expressive singing, breathing newfound meaning into the lyrics. Soloway’s piano acted as an equal guide on these musical quests, as he attentively supplemented Roth’s vocals while distinguishing himself with each note.

The recital and series concluded with the distribution of red roses to attendees, following Soloway’s commentary that he and Roth hope to create music as meaningful as flowers — delicate and powerful.

Celebrating the Ranger!

EEMS I’M HAVING TROUBLE MOVING FROM THE HARBOR WALKWAY FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS! There are lots of things going on down there that simply can’t be ignored: the Yacht Club’s big reveal of its renovated clubhouse and official season’s opening, the arrival (and departure) of several huge cruise ships, and now... the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s special event welcoming the Ranger, the museum’s flagship, back into the Classic Yacht Association’s (CYA) Southern California Fleet. The champagne corks seem to be popping everywhere!

You’ve probably seen her at her berth in front of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and/or leading the annual Holiday Lighted Boat Parade. But what do you really know about Ranger, the newly renovated classic wooden fishing boat?

Although Ranger was reinstated into the Classic Yacht Association in 2020, the coronavirus restrictions prevented an official in-person ceremony. Last Sunday, April 19th, at noon, the celebrants gathered, including guests from the Los Angeles area as well as the Classic Yacht Association’s flag officers. Classic Yacht Association’s Commodore Dianna Ettel officially welcomed the Ranger into the association, and gifts were presented to Greg Gorga Executive Director of the Museum. “This is indeed a special occasion”, Gorga announced, “one we’ve anticipated for the last two years. I thank all who have worked so hard to make this happen: those who renovated the Ranger to qualify her for this occasion, our hard working staff, especially Curator Emily Falk and her committee, and the support we’ve received from our community”.

The Ranger has had a long and fascinating life. Built and launched in 1917, she was made to the specifications of Jimmy Jump, Commodore of the Catalina Island Tuna Club, and may be one of only three Fellows and Stewart yachts built during its first 20 years still afloat. Important factoids: other classic yachts built by the yard include Rudolph Valentino’s yacht Charade and Stan Laurel’s Ida May, both built in 1926. Over the years, celebrities such as Humphrey Bogart, Zane Grey, John Wayne, and Errol Flynn fished from Ranger and, more recently, the vessel has been used for photo-shoots by Lands’ End and Kevin Costner.

The celebratory cake was then cut (with a sword no less!) and passed around as we continued to toast the occasion to the tune of champagne corks popping! Next week we’ll be back at the Maritime Museum again with the opening of the gigantic Whales are Superheroes! exhibit, the largest ever mounted in this museum’s history. So stay tuned...

First and foremost, Ranger, is a genuine, classic big-game fishing yacht, the first private fishing yacht built on the West Coast, and is the oldest boat in the Harbor.

Donated by Jack Morehart, she became the Maritime Museum’s first large exhibit. She was built at Fellows and Stewart, Inc. in San Pedro, California, a shipyard which was founded in 1896 by Joe Fellows, Victor Stewart, and naval architect Joseph Pugh. Her basic plumb-stemmed fantail design was inspired by boats used by the US Forest Service Rangers to patrol National Forests - now you know the inspiration for her name!

In the early 1930s, Ranger was shipped to Hawaii, where she fished the waters for three years with great success. During her stay the interior living area was paneled in the beautiful Koa wood still on display today. Ranger has a full galley, and four bunks with a table seating four. Today, she’s equipped with interior lighting, but still has her 1917 kerosene running lights and her original anchor winch. She boasts a length of 46 feet, and the overall beam is 12 feet with a displacement of 35,000 pounds. Ranger’s presence in the Santa Barbara Harbor is due to the generosity of Morehart (who spent 13 years restoring her) and, in 1997, donated her to the Maritime Museum.

SB City Council Reviews Projects Addressing Homelessness TUESDAY, APRIL 12TH - The Santa Barbara City Council discussed past and current efforts to support people experiencing homelessness during its Tuesday meeting. A report submitted to the council outlined a need for 120 units of bridge housing, along with 158 units of other permanent housing.

Two new developments are on the horizon, including the Vera Cruz Village at 116 East Cota St., and a SB Street Medicine offers medical property at 200 North La Cumbre Rd. What Stagflation?

U.S. SERVICE SECTOR ACTIVITY that powers two-thirds of economic activity is surging more than ever, according to the Institute of Supply Management nonmanufacturing survey. It is growing, per 58.3 percent of managers surveyed, with the index for employment and new orders even higher. New orders rose four points to 60.1 percent, and production activity also edged higher.

“In March, the Services PMI® registered 58.3 percent, a 1.8-percentage point increase compared to the February reading of 56.5 percent. The 12-month average is 62.3 percent, which reflects consistently strong growth in the services sector. The March reading indicates the services sector grew for the 22nd consecutive month after two months of contraction and 122 months of growth before that. A reading above 50 percent indicates the services sector economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates the services sector is generally contracting.”

So this doesn’t look like impending stagflation, the wage-price spiral that happened in the 1970s and pushed inflation to record highs, while growth came to a standstill.

Pundits and some banks that forecast a future wage-price spiral seem to have forgotten that it took consecutive Arab (OPEC) oil embargos in the 1970s causing gasoline shortages and long lines at gas stations for almost a decade to make that happen.

Whereas the Ukraine war and its concomitant sanctions are less than two months old. Why should we even be worrying about prolonged inflation, and what the Fed might do to tame it, when we don’t know whether this war will last for months, or years, and what will be needed to win it?

Predictions of a looming recession are premature, to say the least. Both the service and manufacturing sectors are booming, while supply chains are struggling to catch up and replenish inventories.

This is while the jobs market is red hot with more returning to work. New U.S. jobless claims matched a 54-year low of 166,000 in early April, for instance — the second lowest reading in history— during a period of remarkably strong hiring and the lowest layoffs on record.

What will help to tame the inflation tiger? More workers returning to work will increase production, replenishing inventories. And governments will be increasing their spending, as well, due to the Ukraine war. This will stimulate further production increases.

MarketWatch columnist Jeffry Bartash maintains what was called the “Great Resignation” is over, a time since the pandemic when workers were reluctant to return to work.

“To be sure, Americans have been saying ‘I quit’ in record numbers,” said Bartash. “Almost 57 million people left jobs — many more than once — in the 14-month period from January 2021 to February 2022. That’s a 25 percent spike vs. a similar time span before the pandemic.”

Virtuosic Sibling Acts – Real & Imagined

Grammy-winning folk band Punch Brothers

Punchy Make-Up Date: An epic party spoiler by the name of omicron deprived us of a muchanticipated evening with the Punch Brothers at the beginning of this year. But the legendary progressive bluegrass unit more than made up for lost time last week at Campbell Hall, hosted by UCSB Arts & Lectures, with effervescent leader Chris Thile voicing a collective emotion at the outset: “it’s about time!”

What ensued over a generous twoplus hour show was a resounding affirmation of what makes this aggregate a candidate for “Great American Band” status, acoustic division. The Brothers, who last played locally at the Lobero seven years ago, delivered a steamy fine pile of consummate riffs, adventurismmeets-traditionalism, flowing wit (both musically and via between-song banter) and a strong sense of group think identity.

And they did it all while gathered around a single microphone, old school bluegrass style.

By this point, 15 years deep into its life as a band, the Punch Brothers – wily mandolin master Thile, fiddler Gabe Witcher, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert and banjoist Noam Pikelny – have a healthy songbook of original tunes to draw from. But they take care to pay tribute to a wide range of influences and material from sources they feed from.

That aspect is central to the latest album, Hell on Church Street, a tribute to the late

Once again, they managed the in-house feat of blending soulful sophistication with a certain tipsiness of spirit, in a place where deep roots in American music meet gymnastic instrumental prowess. We were properly punched, in the best way.

Further Musical Sibling News: British siblings Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, cellist and pianist, respectively, are up next in A&L’s classical component of its season, Tuesday at Campbell Hall. Our friendship intensified after the school years, at the Tel Aviv University, where we studied with Professor Arie Vardi. We traveled together to Germany to continue our studies there. Soon after, we were tempted to share our passion and play together for the first time. The rest is history...

Q. What is the secret to your synchronicity?

Our goal in the process of working together is to reach a shared vision of the music we perform. We never try to “synchronize” ourselves in the sense of playing “together,” rather to breath together: From the smallest nuances of color, timing, and expression, through the flexible phrasing and to the overall architecture or so to speak “meaning” of a piece, we wish to feel free and coherent as a single mind and soul.

The final, ideal phase is such, in which we feel we know exactly how the next tone will be played, sensing and anticipating even small refinements, as if being imagined by our own fantasy.

Q. What is the most challenging part of playing together?

As we described in the previous answer, achieving the common state of one unity is an experience of totality! It requires devotion and mutual trust, as well as a good bit of patience during the rehearsals. This is a real challenge, but also the magic and power of playing together! At our performances, we must be fully with the music, but also with each other, which demands a huge degree of concentration alongside inner calm.

Another challenging aspect is managing and coordinating the preparation of a big, varied repertoire, often to be played within a short time. In these few weeks, we play three concerti and two recital programs, move between countries and continents, prepare our next CD recording, teach (we are both Professors in Graz, Austria) and not least important, enjoy being parents to our wonderful son, Itamar.

Goleta Valley Art Association

Emergence now open at the Faulkner Gallery The work of members of the Goleta Valley Art Association will be on display through April 28th in the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Public Library.

Juror for the show is Ray Hunter, local Master Tea Leaf Reader, ink and w/c by Rosalie Bier Landscape Watercolor artist and member of The Oak Group. The exhibition’s theme is “Emergence”.

The Library is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.

The library no longer requires masks for fully vaccinated individuals during regular business hours. Masks are still recommended for all and required for those who are not fully vaccinated.

Goleta Valley Art Association began as a small group of artists who first met in March 1963, showing their artwork at a Goleta bank. From its first meeting place in the office of the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce to its present-day sites at the Goleta Public Library, The Faulkner Gallery, and at La Cumbre Plaza, the Association has grown from 16 members to over 200 members. www.thegoletavalleyartassociation.org

2022 Earth Day Mural Now Underway

Maria Arroyo selected as Mural Artist Community Environmental Council, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, and Paseo Nuevo announced that artist Maria Arroyo has been selected to paint this year’s Earth Day Mural. Selected from submissions from across Maria Arroyo Ventura, Santa Barbara, and SLO counties, the 2022 Call For Entries prompted artists to submit their artistic concepts online alongside a proposal for a mural that expresses what Earth Day and Climate Leadership mean to them. Maria Arroyo’s concept was selected to appear on the Paseo Nuevo Arts Terrace Parking Deck adjacent to MCASB. Arroyo, and her supporting artist group, will begin painting the mural this week, with the help of community volunteers. Tune in to Paseo Nuevo’s Instagram Live to see the reveal of the finished mural Saturday, April 23rd, during the Earth Day Celebration at the Arlington Theater!

Maria Arroyo began drawing and painting in the 1980s as a participant in the Alpha Art Studio program. Since 2013, she has been an artist at Slingshot / Alpha Art Studio.

Maria’s Latinx heritage gives her work a sense of magical realism. Her eccentric landscapes and iconic figures, often encompassed in ornate patterns, pull the viewer into a mythic world – suspended from the everyday without fully leaving it behind.

ERHAPS ECHOING EARLY MEMORIES OF TRIPS TO THE ENGLISH COAST or the light reflecting from the ubiquitous waters of the Lake District, Ralph Waterhouse delivers canvas after canvas in transluecent color. Whether it’s a sunset over Santa Barbara Hills or a blue sky day at the ocean, the images offer up moments immersed in the natural world, with calm, inherent presence.

“I am always challenged when I paint,” the lifelong artist and gallery owner shared of his process recently. “I put pressure on myself to constantly try to improve my paintings.”

Born in Yorkshire, England during the war, a place sometimes called “God’s own country,” Waterhouse began painting early. He pursued a career in graphic design, and transitioned to being a full-time painter in the early 1970s. His wildlife paintings gained International Ralph Waterhouse recognition with Waterhouse being featured in articles in leading magazines, a feature on BBC Television in England, and One Man and Group Art Shows in England, West Germany, and the USA. He also opened and owned his own gallery in the popular Lake District of Northeastern England from 1975 to 1983.

It wasn’t until the 1990’s after locating in the United States, that he transitioned to landscape painting, developing the style he is known for now. Part of his current practice includes painting en plein air.

He painted “all through the pandemic,” and was able to capture some popular outdoor locations without little interuption, as people stayed in during the early days.

Waterhouse is inspired by the California Landscape and its beautiful light. The late afternoon and early morning sunlight have a special quality which he loves to capture on canvas.

“I am always excited to paint,” he shared after completing a painting demo during April’s 1st Thursday. “Because we live in such a beautiful area we are so blessed as artists and challenged to do justice to our beautiful surroundings.”

Over the years, Waterhouse has exhibited in the national Oil Painters of America and California Art Club Exhibitions. He was asked to present one of his paintings to Margaret Thatcher by the British Consul General on one of her official visits to California. He was commissioned to paint several large murals, which are placed in some of the main branches and corporate offices of Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, (now Union Bank).

He is also a Member and Chairman of the Santa Barbara region of the prestigious California Art Club.

Ralph, with his wife Diane, opened Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara County in 1984.

The Gallery has been located in its current location in La Arcada at 1114 State Street in downtown Santa Barbara for 31years.

Revealing Images of a Revolutionary Era Photo exhibition at Art, Design & Architecture Museum reflects life in 1970’s Isla Vista

That’s exactly what the UC Santa Barbara AD&A Museum is offering with its current exhibit, “Isla Vista: Resistance and Progress by Marion Post Wolcott.” It consists of 17 photos by the veteran photographer, an on-and-off Santa Barbara resident, which document aspects of life in the university-adjacent community, circa 1974.

“Marion Post Wolcott’s photographs documenting Isla Vista in the 1970s are a testament to the pioneering, counter culture ethos of this unique student enclave,” said museum director Gabriel Ritter. “Walking through the exhibition, one is reminded of the raucous spirit, and ecologically-conscious mindset that was nurtured here in the past, and remains alive and well today.”

Indeed, in her vivid photographs, Post Wolcott “brings to the fore the bright, human side of the neighborhood in the mid-1970s,” said Silvia Perea, curator of the museum’s architecture and design collection. She notes the images feature “pacific demonstrations, family-oriented fairs, organic restaurants, recycling fields, street markets,” but avoids darker elements of the time such as drug trafficking.

HE COUNTERCULTURE ERA OF THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 1970S is gradually fading into legend, sustained by hazy memories and secondhand stories. To get a better idea of how utopian visions clashed with on-the-ground reality, contemporary photographs created by a sympathetic yet discerning artist would be enormously helpful.

“While she identifies with Isla Vista’s political drive,” Perea said, “she is more attracted to the neighborhood’s achievements than to its struggles.”

Post Wolcott is best known for the many photos she took between 1938 and 1941 in the Southern U.S., when she was working for the Farm Security Administration. Rather than concentrating exclusively on Depression-era poverty, she “captured both sides of the United States’ socioeconomic spectrum, combining heartening scenes of endurance with discomforting images of privilege,” Perea noted.

Once that project ended, Post Wolcott took a nearly three-decade hiatus from professional photography, as she accompanied her diplomat husband to various postings around the world. They settled down in Santa Barbara in the early 1970s, and in a visit to Isla Vista, she found inspiration to resume her work.

When she turned her lens to Isla Vista, Perea noted, she generally focused on “details, rather than panoramic views — a hand-lettered get-out-the-the vote sign; a group of musicians playing at an outdoor concert; a bearded, shirtless man with a young child on

his shoulders. Several of the photographs document Isla Vista’s recycling program — one of the first in the nation — showing, among other things, huge plastic bags full of collected cans.

“Just a few years before, in 1969, the oil spill in the Santa Barbara channel had spurred wide ecological action locally and nationally,” Perea noted. “Post Wolcott’s photographs attest to the lasting social mobilization that followed the disaster. The handmade graphics in the recycling bins and fields highlight that ecological action at Isla Vista was driven by local residents,” as opposed to a government agency.

Stylistically, Perea sees more similarities than differences between these photos and the better-known ones Post Wolcott took during the Depression. “The FSA series is shot in black and white and questions ideals of democracy in a capitalist society, while Isla Vista is in color and praises the progress that stems from selfless human bonding,” she noted.

“However, the casual, fine-art approach to her subject matters remains consistent. Both series are also fruit of Post Wolcott’s belief in the power of photography to drive socioeconomic and political progress.”

The photographs were originally from the collection of Post Wolcott’s daughter, Linda Wolcott Moore, who owned a San Francisco gallery specializing in photography. Like her mother, she, too lived in Santa Barbara for a time, and when she moved out of the city, she donated the photographs to the AD&A Museum. A few of them were shown at a retrospective exhibition of Post Wolcott’s work at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1988, two years before the artist’s death. This is the first time the entire series is on display.

“As I see it, the Isla Vista series is, ultimately, a self-portrait of Post Wolcott,” Perea said. “In I.V., she finds the social values she upholds since young, and that her work for the FSA in the 1930s and 40s reflects. By immortalizing expressions of these values decades later, Post Wolcott is defining who she is, not only as an artist, but also as a human being, all the while celebrating her regained freedom to do so.”

Isla Vista: Resistance and Progress continues through May 1 at the AD&A Museum, 552 University Road. It is open from noon to 5 p.m.
