REVOLVING WORLD STAGE, UCSB Arts & Lectures will welcome three international classical music celebrities to Campbell Hall this coming month: Pianist Daniil Trifonov, Cellist Gautier Capuçon, and Pianist JeanYves Thibaudet. Each celebrated musician will bring works by the romanic period’s Johannes Brahms among others, as they usher in the romance of spring.

Musical America’s 2019 Artist of the Year

Grammy Award-winning pianist Daniil Trifonov (dan-EEL TREE-fon-ov) will combine his consummate technique and rare depth and sensitivity in a performance on Saturday, April 30th at 7pm at Campbell Hall. The performance is part of the CREATING HOPE programming

initiative.

Named Musical America’s 2019 Artist of the Year, Trifonov made a spectacular ascent of the classical music world as a solo artist, champion of the concerto repertoire, chamber and vocal collaborator, and composer.

Since his debut in Moscow at age eight, residencies with the likes of the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, as well as his studies with Sergei Babayan at The Cleveland Institute of Music, shaped his public persona. After winning both the Rubinstein and the Tchaikovsky piano competitions during the 2010-11 season when he was 20, he continued traveling the world, iconic stage and orchestra after iconic stage and orchestra.

Along the way, his gifts have been featured on nearly a dozen albums, from the early days of Daniil Trifonov Plays Frederic Chopin to his most recent recordings, 2019’s Destination Rachmaninov: Arrival, 2020’s Silver Age, and 2021’s Bach: The Art Of Life.

OHN BURNETT HAS NEVER BEEN UNHAPPY IN A DONUT SHOP. Now, after years of spreading joy to the community via donuts at a State Street storefront, Burnett and his wife, Denisse Salinas, have opened the first permanent Hook & Press location in La Arcada Court.

Boasting a bright, whimsical interior and a menu of original donuts and breakfast items, Hook & Press delivers what Burnett calls “a very Santa Barbara experience.”

“I want people to have a very memorable experience here,” shared Burnett. “I want this place to be a place for families and friends — and the visitors — to come and make memories.”

Despite being a life-long donut lover, Burnett started his career as a mortgage broker. Finding a lack of passion, he began searching for a new path.

One morning in 2014, after beginning a long drive to visit his family, Burnett wished there was a place where he could buy a warm, expertlycrafted donut. Immediately, he realized that he could be the one to bring artisan donuts to Santa Barbara.

As La Arcada’s newest member, Burnett is happy to benefit from the plaza’s prime downtown location and sense of community.

“We’re friends with so many people, and so many of the businesses around us have come in to just lend a hand or lend an ear,” said Burnett. “It’s pretty special.”

In Santa Barbara, There are More Effective Ways to Combat Systemic Racism than a Police Oversight Commission

T

HE NECESSITY OF ADDRESSING RACISM IN SANTA BARBARA in the aftermath of the killings of numerous people of color nationwide, as well as disproportionate arrest and incarceration rates of people of color, are issues almost everyone agrees on.

the Union message. “We should all agree: The answer is not to defund the police,” Biden said to loud bipartisan applause. “It’s to fund the police. Fund them. Fund them. Fund them with resources and training.” Hopefully this means resources and training that address equity and racism.

The move to create an equitable, just, and safe environment for everyone in Santa Barbara will require a citywide strategic plan for educating leadership and citizens alike about the historical contributions and cultural significance of people of color on the South Coast, as well as for teaching everyone how to identify and challenge racism.

Unfortunately, Santa Barbara City Council’s response to the current landscape misses the mark. Its attempt to form a police oversight commission, without a strategy to address inequity and bias as it streams from the city’s leadership team, elected officials, and the community itself, will be ineffective.

Violent, unjustified killings and the inequitable treatment of people of color have a long history in the United States. That history, including many recent, video documented incidents repeatedly coming into the public dialog has brought into focus the injustice and the need for more equitable communities across America. Unfortunately, this is not something easily addressed. Racism operates on a systemic level, social level, and a personal level, with prejudice taught at early ages and reinforced by unjust laws, community traditions, and structures that work to marginalize communities.

The efforts by the ad hoc committee to create transparency and an unbiased review process may be well served as action items for the current Police and Fire Commission, rather than forming a new commission and effectively creating another layer of administrators to navigate.

Cultivating freedom from bias and favoritism does not start at the level of the individual police officer. The remedies that create cultural equity start with our elected officials, governmental leadership, and administrators in the business, and non-profit sectors of our entire country, as well as with parents and educators in our community.

The City Council should widen the parameters that were formulated in the heat of the national discussion on confronting systemic racism and equity. They should follow the lead of the county and the Fund for Santa Barbara and create a Racial Equity Fund, declare racism a public health crisis, and make a citywide commitment to racial justice at their meeting next week.

Broad-based remedies for systemic racism are more challenging in the face of narrow and reactionary calls to “defund the police” which never made sense, either as a slogan or a policy – it was a reaction springing into the political and cultural landscape following the murders of George Floyd and others.

“No one hates a bad cop more than a good cop,” was the first response of then SBPD Chief Lori Luhnow, after reviewing the video of the murder of George Floyd. It’s a response that fundamentally characterizes this city’s police department.

To contextualize the current situation, the Santa Barbara Police Department is an excellent example of a diverse, forward thinking, up to date and effective community policing agency. The SBPD should not be compared to or stand in the shadow of troubled police departments. There is not local statistical evidence to justify an oversight commission to review cases of excessive force.

Establishing a commission and then waiting until a police officer acts inappropriately, is not the way to address a problem with roots running much deeper in our community than an officer’s behavior.

City Moves Forward in Plans to Hire State St. Master Plan Consultant State Street Advisory Committee Questions its Role in Planning Process

TATE STREET’S FUTURE WILL SOON BE PLACED INTO THE HANDS OF ONE OF THE EIGHT FIRMS that have responded to the City of Santa Barbara’s request for proposals for the creation of a State Street Master Plan. City staff made the announcement during the State Street Advisory Committee’s April 18th meeting, outlining the selection process that will culminate in staff presenting a final contract to City Council for approval in June or July.

Other SSAC members voiced concerns about the weight of their recommendations to city staff going forward, and what would happen if the SSAC’s views did not align with city staff ’s decisions. Still others asked about the larger committee’s lack of opportunity for involvement in the city’s proposal selection process.

Assistant City Attorney Dan Hentschke answered members’ concerns by indicating that the SSAC had to adhere to its function as determined by the City Council. He commented that if the SSAC became involved with too many “individual government decisions,” such as hiring a consultant or determining interim State Street regulations, it could jeopardize the committee’s role.

In response, SSAC members raised questions about when and how the committee will be able to provide input on the State Street Master Plan and its planning process.

“How can you say that our looking at these submittals, and evaluating them with the staff, and advising City Council on how we feel the respondents would fit in is not germane to our charge by the City Council?” asked SSAC member and Historic Landmarks Commissioner Ed Lenvik. “I believe it is; I believe that we’ve got to be part of the decision making...”

“Our goal is to protect the committee’s function as a stakeholder committee consistent with the law,” said Hentschke. “We’re doing what we think is giving you the correct advice to stay focused on the one governmental decision, and not get bogged down in these little governmental decisions that would preclude you from doing the big one.”

Tensions proved high between SSAC members at multiple points, with Davis at one point raising his voice to cut off Lenvik as he attempted to provide additional commentary.

The City Council established the SSAC in July 2021, charging its 15 members with providing recommendations on the creation of a State Street Master Plan to reimagine and revitalize the State Street corridor and its surrounding areas. Davis commented that confusion has arisen from the SSAC’s early formation in the planning process.

It was later discussed that city staff has asked Davis, not acting in his role as SSAC Chair, to join their interviews of the prospective firms, which are made up of teams. Davis voiced that staff reached out to him due to his over 20 years of experience serving as Community Development Director and City Planner.

The SSAC also briefly discussed the recent formation of the City Council’s State Street Interim Operations Ad Hoc Committee, which will provide updates in meetings.

Currently, the City is in the process of selecting a proposal for a firm to craft the State Street Master Plan, working in collaboration with the SSAC’s input. According to State Street Master Planner Tess Harris, city staff will review and narrow down the list of eight applicants to four to five firms by week’s end. These firms will then respond to additional questions posed by staff about their intended scope of work, submitting answers without any identifiable information. The SSAC’s subcommittee will review those responses and rank the groups before the small group of staff, joined by Davis, interviews the firms.

“Usually, the staff would...go out and hire a consultant, the consultant would come in, and then you’d constitute the committee,” explained SSAC Chair Dave Davis. “We didn’t do that. We actually constituted a committee before we expected a consultant, before we had a process, so to a certain degree we’re creating its [the SSAC’s] own structure as we go. And it’s confusing...”

Up to three firms will be chosen to present in person. City staff will select a firm from this group, and take the consultant’s contract to the City Council for approval. Ultimately, Harris commented that the city hopes to have the State Street Master Plan finished by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Following this discussion, the American Institute of Architects - Santa Barbara (AIASB) presented the findings of its 2020 Design Charrette to the SSAC, highlighting its value as a resource in the State Street Master Plan’s creation.

OWERFUL AND PEACEFUL, artist Maria Arroyo’s warrior bird will watch over passersby and the Central Coast’s diverse ecosystems from its colorful post by the Museum Maria Arroyo at work on the mural of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara once it is unveiled on Saturday, April 23rd between 1 and 2pm. An artistic highlight of Santa Barbara’s Earth Day festivities, Arroyo’s Earth Day Mural will be revealed for generations to enjoy at the height of this Saturday’s Community Environmental Council’s Earth Day Celebration at the Arlington Theatre.

“Earth Day is a celebration, it’s about positivity,” said Kathi King, CEC’s Director of Outreach and Education and Earth Day organizer. “We hope that people have a good time, that they learn something, and that maybe they learn something that they take away from it with them... We want to come together.”

For over 50 years, Earth Day has served as a vital reminder that the key to protecting our planet — and future — depends upon communities worldwide coming together to fight climate change. Given that the holiday’s birthplace is Santa Barbara, the annual festival is especially meaningful for the local community, inspiring thousands to celebrate Earth’s beauty through art, music, and educational panels.

The Mural Arroyo created her mural in an effort to share with the larger community what Earth Day and climate leadership mean to her, responding to a call for artists from the teams at CEC, Museum of Contemporary Art SB, and Paseo Nuevo. Currently, Arroyo is involved with Santa Barbara’s Slingshot/Alpha Art Studio, a non-profit progressive arts center that supports artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her art draws upon her Latinx background and culture to depict compelling scenes of magical realism.

The Celebration Bookending the mural reveal is CEC’s Earth Day Celebration, which will surround the Arlington Theatre in a free, sustainability-focused party from 10am to 5pm. Starting with greetings from Emcee Eric Cardenas of LOACOM and remarks by Sigrid Wright of CEC at 10am, events follow in rapid and sometimes overlapping fashion.

At 10:15am, Art Cisneros will offer a Chumash blessing. At 10:45am, CEC’s Michael Chiaco will discuss the organization’s Reverse, Repair, Protect mission.

Along the way, their will be short films, and an Eat Less Water Challenge. At 2pm, you can take in a recycled fashion show spearheaded by UCSB students and throughout the day explorethe CEC’s annual Green Car and E-bike show. With fun events for all ages and interests, attendees can learn how they can make a difference in their everyday lives by practicing the CEC’s 2022 theme of “Climate Leadership.”

Environmental Heroes The celebration’s Environmental Heroes Awards Ceremony will recognize two honorees who uphold this theme — singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins and the graduates of the CEC’s UC Climate Stewards Program. Loggins has devoted his musical skills to supporting environmental initiatives throughout his career, including playing for the CEC.

Her mural furthers this theme, showing a “warrior bird” inspired by the Mexica Warriors watching over local animals, plants, and the people who call this region home.

Loggins has spoken and acted as a strong climate advocate for decades, frequently utilizing his music to support and draw attention to environmental issues and projects. On Earth Day in 1995, he performed his song Conviction of the Heart before 500,000 people at the National Mall in Washington D.C. Vice President Al Gore later referred to the song as the “the unofficial anthem of the environmental movement.” Loggins has also performed for past CEC Earth Day celebrations.

“Arroyo’s ability to envision and render new realities, to build new worlds is so very pertinent to current society as we are called upon to re-imagine and redefine our relationship to the land, all of its inhabitants, and our resources,” reads MCASB’s announcement.

The CEC will also recognize the over 40 individuals who have become certified Climate Stewards by completing the 40 hours-long UC Climate Stewards Program. Last year, CEC became the only regional nonprofit to partner with the University of California to host this course, which educates participants on the science and psychology behind climate change so they can effectively communicate the topic to others.

“There are all these new branches of science that are coming out related to climate change,” explained King. “We’ve got eco-grief and eco-anxiety, and also just the importance of talking about it on a daily basis, to try to find ways to talk about it that normalize it and make it easier for people to understand and discuss, and then also work together on solutions.”

Community members searching for different ways to serve as climate leaders can learn about other regional climate-focused organizations through the CEC’s Annual Climate Leadership Summit (3 to 5pm), where 25 groups will share their missions. There will also be screenings of short films highlighting regional initiatives.

There will also be opportunities to celebrate local creative talent, as the Wildling Museum Poetry Contest Winners share their heartwarming pieces reflecting on the value of combating climate change (1pm). Young artists will take center stage for the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper Student Art Show, showcasing the natural beauty of our oceans and coastline.

Attendees can then travel back in time to experience what an early Earth Day celebration would have been like as local musicians present a concert of music from the year 1972 from 7:30pm to 9pm inside the Arlington Theatre. Performing artists will include the Jackson Gillies Trio, Alastair Greene, No Simple Highway, and Lois Mahalia, along with special guests.

Green Car Show CEC has hosted its Earth Day Green Car Show since 2000, making it the country’s longest-running public green car show, as well as the largest display of alternative-fuel cars in the state. Attendees not only explore the latest green car models from a range of companies but also speak directly with vehicle owners. The experience has motivated many participants in years past to purchase their own eco-friendly vehicles, which in turn supports CEC’s primary goal of calling for clean energy.

“We push for policies that basically get us off fossil fuels as fast as possible,” explained King. “Our overarching goal...has been the rapid transition to clean energy.”

14 Museums and Cultural Attractions Present First-of-its-Kind Collaboration

Impact: Climate Change & the Urgency of Now ORKING TO RAISE AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, a newly formed Environmental Alliance of 14 Santa Barbara County Museums is presenting an inaugural project called Impact: Climate Change & the Urgency of Now. It is a multidisciplinary effort aimed at limiting the effects of the planet’s rising temperature.

“The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is really excited about participating in this collaborative effort.

We hope our exhibition Take a Hike, Save the World will give our community a greater appreciation for our trails and public lands and inspire them to spend more time responsibly exploring the great outdoors,” commented Dacia Harwood, Executive Director of the SBHM. Santa Barbara is widely credited as the birthplace of Earth Day (April 22nd). Born as a response to the devastating 1969 oil spill off its coast, it marks the start of the environmental movement across the country. The Alliance partners are jointly taking part in the annual Santa Barbara Earth Day Celebration hosted by the Community Environmental Council and held this year at the Arlington Theatre. “We are 14 institutions with one shared vision,” said

Steve Windhager, executive director of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. “We believe that our collaborative work will inform and engage the public, while being a force multiplier for positive change.”

Biannually, the Alliance will address a different environmental theme which will be addressed with associated exhibitions and activities that seek to prompt action. Climate change was selected as the first topic, as its effects are being felt globally and locally.

“The collaboration is a great example of how our area museums and cultural organizations work together to better our community. We are thankful for Stacey Otte, the director of the Wildling, for leading this effort and inspiring museums like ours to get involved in the Alliance,” continued Harwood.

NDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL EVENTS in town last year was the triumphant return of the formidable-yet-friendly Danish String Quartet. The handsome foursome appeared at Rockwood, arriving like a revitalizing balm after the pandemicfueled hiatus from live music. Lavishing the DSQ with the term “conquering heroes” seems too military a connotation, but it suits the occasion.

Next week, the DSQ-in-the-805 adventure continues, as the quartet returns to Campbell Hall on Wednesday.

In an evening framed by two versions of Schubert’s masterpiece Death and the Maiden quartet, the premiere-birthing process turns to Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s Pige. Described as a

On Saturday at the Lobero, part of CAMA’s “Masterseries,” the often conceptdriven Bakdaryan appears in recital with Canadian musicians Mark Fewer, violin and Jamie Parker, piano, in a program dubbed Glorious and Free. The focus is on “Romani-inspired Songs and Operetta Arias,” touching on music of Brahms, Dvořák, Iradier, Valverde, Sarasate, Yvain, Lehár, and Kálmán.

To See And Hear: The Santa Barbara Symphony continues with its season Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Granada, this time riffing on the theme of “Romance in a New Key.” On the program, one of many cultural events this spring linked to Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s blockbuster Through Vincent’s Eyes exhibition, is a world premiere arrangement with a complicated back story. Austrian composer Richard Dünser worked with the 19th century material of Schumann’s Piano Quintet, written for the composer’s piano virtuoso wife Clara Schumman, later adapted to a piano duo by Brahms, and now transformed into a piano four hands concerto with string orchestra.

Fittingly, the four hands belong to real life romantic partners Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg, aka the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo.

Tall Tale-Spinner: The current Tales from the Tavern series, a 20-year-old series in the inspired rustic ambience of Santa Ynez’ Maverick Saloon, hit a high-water mark last Wednesday with the appearance of “thinking person’s” country legend Rodney Crowell. Crowell, 71, normally heard in larger venues, palpably cozied up to the intimate post-modern cowboy bar setting, replete with a dense canopy of dollar bills on the ceiling. Early on, Crowell worked with Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band (which played the Arlington and the Santa Barbara County Bowl back when), penning Hot Band classics Ain’t Living Long Like This and Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight. He later dug deep into his rough-tumble upbringing with the album The Houston Kid. By now, Crowell has amassed an important songbook. He’s a tall drink of water who resembles a country-fied Paul McCartney and shares some of Sir Paul’s gift of melody and subtle song twists.

In a generous encore segment – a tale unto itself – Crowell dipped into his new album, Triage, for the loose socio-political commentary of Something’s Has to Change, Shame on the Moon (a hit for Bob Seger, which Crowell rarely plays), and The Rock of My Soul, from Houston Kid. He closed with a ripe, singalong cover version of Townes Van Zandt’s Poncho and Lefty (another Harris link, come to think of it).

Doug Margerum: 20 Years of Making Great Wine (& Food!)

W

ITH A SELF-DEPRECATING GRIN, winemaker (and retired restaurateur) Doug Margerum, confessed, “Really, I’m sort of running a restaurant all over again.” It is true. But didn’t he leave the Wine Cask years ago to focus on wine? He did. But Margerum just can’t stop pairing food with his wine! The new restaurant is his new wine tasting room at the Hotel Californian.

In 1981, Doug talked his father into opening The Wine Cask, which was a wine shop and tasting room. That blossomed from simple sandwiches into one of Santa Barbara’s great restaurants.

In 1986, Doug started helping Santa Barbara wine legends Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist make their wines.

And in 2001, Doug made the big move to making his own wines. He kept it simple at first. His SYBARITE Sauvignon Blanc, Doug Margerum the ÜBER Syrah, and his M5 blend of five Rhone Valley varieties were his first wines. They are still a well-loved part of the line-up to this day.

The Wine Cask kept growing and growing, becoming a favorite of Julia Child’s for dinner. And he just kept making wine until it became apparent to him that he could either run a restaurant, or make wine. He had to choose. So, in 2007, he sold The Wine Cask to focus on wine. And then in 2010, with Mitchell Sjerven of Bouchon managing the show, Doug

jumped back into the Wine Cask for eight more years.

In 2019, Doug opened his new tasting room in the Hotel Californian. “We’re in the cool part of the Funk Zone,” he beamed. And what a gorgeous tasting room it is. It features 22-foot high ceilings, a private event space on the second floor balcony, and a kitchen that serves not just charcuterie plates, but a full menu of the sort of food you would expect from the former owner of the Wine Cask. As Doug put it, “The food idea is that we get the best ingredients we can get. The best ingredients make the best food. That sounds so simple, but it isn’t.”

Great ingredients are what made the Wine Cask a treasure, and the same ideas are in play here. The duck and arugula salad, for example, features duck breast from Liberty Ducks of Petaluma, goat cheese from Laura Chenel, candied walnuts, and a sweet cherry mostrada. Had this arrived at my table at the Wine Cask, I wouldn’t have blinked. But having it arrive in the Funk Zone?

Now there is a pleasant surprise! We paired it with the 2020 Grenache, which was absolutely the perfect choice.

Supper Club dinners for wine club members alone make joining the wine club a great temptation.

These days Margerum is making 23 wines. As the tasting room manager, Lisa Delanty said with a twinkle in her eye, “Our wines pair perfectly with any occasion; from a crisp easy-drinking Rosé to a smouldering sexy Syrah.”

There isn’t room to describe all of Doug’s wines without taking over the entire magazine. But among our long-standing favorites are his Estate Syrahs, his Riviera Rosés (this year’s Rosé is exquisite!), the Barden Fonte Blends, and his M5 white and red Rhone varietal blends.

If you want to do a vertical tasting, he has his M5 Rhone Blend bottles from the library for sale going back to 2010. With the M5 line, you get to taste the expression of each growing season blended with a masterly hand. No two years are quite alike, and Doug refers to it as his “Desert Island” wine. If he had only one wine that he could drink for the rest of his life on that desert island, it would be his M5 Red. All things considered, were that the case, we would ask to be marooned with him on the same island. Happy Twentieth, Doug!

An ‘Iconic Headland’

ERCHED UPON THE PACIFIC COAST IN SUNNY GOLETA, UC Santa Barbara has an enviable campus that provides a unique suite of opportunities to the community, including dorm-side surfing, on-site marine research, and scenic views of the Santa Barbara Channel.

This was not always the case. The seaside location was originally home to thousands of Chumash Indians and later served as agricultural land and a World War II Marine air base. The military presence left an especially pronounced impact on Campus Point — the headland adjacent to the campus beach — which still bears asphalt and concrete foundations as well as carpets of invasive ice plant from that time.

The university’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) plans to restore the bluff ’s native flora — and has just received funding to do Lisa Stratton so. A grant from the state will support the removal of the asphalt pad and the replacement of invasive plants with native flora. CCBER will also work with the Barbareño Band of Chumash Indians to ensure the integrity of the site’s cultural resources, and collaborate on signage that highlights the location’s ecological, geological, and cultural heritage. Work is set to begin in summer 2022, with excavation likely to commence by autumn.

It’s one thing to try and bring back native plants — which promote the health of an ecosystem — but the team also plans to take the added step of determining the unique and historical character of Campus Point’s ecology. “Coastal sage scrub is a broad plant community, but I’d say there’s a specific flavor to it in the varying regions of California, such as coastal Goleta,” said Chris Berry, CCBER’s Campus Lagoon steward.

“Campus Point has so much potential,” said project lead Lisa Stratton, CCBER’s director of ecosystem management. “It’s this iconic headland that sort of defines UCSB, but it still bears the imprint of degradation from the military era.”

Stratton and Berry are particularly excited by the center’s ongoing success reintroducing increasingly rare native wildflowers and annuals. These plants are incredibly important for supporting native bees, butterflies, and other components of the food web.

“Unfortunately, these annual flowering forbs tend to get lost and ignored,” Stratton said. “They’re really vulnerable to invasive annual grasses. So bringing them back requires long-term management, controlled burns, and careful weed control.”

CCBER has seen a lot of success with their controlled burns on Lagoon Island. While Fishburn laments the damage done long ago, she sets her sights on the future.

“We cannot erase the past,” she said. Her sentiment was that our actions going forward are more impactful. She appreciates CCBER’s commitment to restoration and hopes the Campus Point project can return the headland to its original condition and prevent further ecological and cultural impacts.

Of course, learning from the past is an important part of building a better future. In this light, CCBER plans to install interpretive signs as part of the restoration effort. The placards will inform visitors about the site’s flora and fauna, geological processes, and cultural heritage. The goal is to foster a connection with the ecology, culture, and history of the location.

“The site is really accessible to the campus community,” Stratton said, “and the project will restore this amazing headland for generations to appreciate and enjoy.”

Campus Point was undoubtedly a familiar location to past Chumash people. Historic notes and maps preserve the site’s Chumash name, Sismikiw. The nearby Goleta Slough (Sitiptip in Chumash) was once a sizable shallow bay that hosted many villages. It was among the most densely populated areas in all of pre-contact California: a veritable metropolis.

Natural processes and human activity dramatically reshaped the area around campus over the past 200 years, altering the ecology and cultural record. Large debris flows in November 1861 turned the bay into more of a shallow lagoon. Then in WWII, government airfield construction filled in most of the Goleta Slough, leaving the

What Is the New Normal?

WHAT WILL THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE with the COVID-19 pandemic about to end, and a possible new cold war with Russia just beginning? It is a time when governments come to the rescue.

We’ve seen it happening with the demise of COVID-19 due to the development of miraculous vaccines that only governments can research and fund.

But it also means consumers have been given more money to spend, which has resulted in the highest monthly inflation numbers since 2005.

The consumer price index jumped 1.2 percent last month, driven by the higher cost of gasoline, food, and housing, the government said Tuesday [April 12, 2022]. It was the largest monthly gain since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and resulted in the highest annual increase in 40 years, crimping the spending of consumers and investments of

producers.

Scary as that may be, the FRED graph shows that it has been higher in 1974 and 1980 during the Arab oil embargos when it rose to 14 percent, per the FRED graph. Inflation is also happening with commodities such as wheat and oil because of the sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine and threatening the West with nuclear weapons if NATO interfered with Putin’s wholesale destruction of another country.

We are also seeing how the E.U., U.S., and Japanese governments have come together to aid Ukraine. But all of this takes lots of money, which only governments can spend, as I said.

It took $trillions to vanquish the pandemic, and we see with the proposed 2022-23 fiscal year budget of $5.8 trillion what must be done to keep the U.S. on a strong growth path.

It really means the transfer of more wealth from the private sector via higher taxes to

To emphasize that wealthy Americans can afford higher taxes, a Times interviewer mentioned that some 130 new American billionaires were created just from 2020 to 2021.

French economist Thomas Piketty, author of the best-selling Capital in the Twenty-First Century, and sure to be a future Nobel Prizewinner in Economics, stated recently in a NY Times Magazine interview, “the period of maximum prosperity of the U.S. economy in the middle of the century was a period where you had a top income tax rate of 90 percent, 80 percent, and this was not a problem because income gaps of one to 100 and one to 200 are not necessary for

The income gaps rose to more than 300 to one for CEOs vs. their employees during the 1980s as inequality levels grew to what they are today. We cannot possibly pay for the programs needed to protect Americans if such levels of inequality continue. That is already happening with the 5.6 percent annual rise in average hourly wages, with transportation, leisure, and retail trade employees’ average wages rising even faster, as we said last week.

I said last week that now isn’t the time to worry about inflation or the Fed engineering a soft landing, or any ‘landing’ at all. It is precisely during such uncertain times that we need elevated growth and a government that steps up, while partisan politics step down, even with an upcoming election in November.

UBBED “KILLER WHALES,” ORCAS ARE KNOWN THE WORLD OVER for their iconic black and white patterned bodies and effective group hunting practices. Yet despite this nickname, orcas are technically members of the dolphin family (Delphinidae). They travel in social pods ranging from a handful to approximately 20 at a time, migrating and living throughout all oceans.

Local whale watchers can occasionally observe orca pods swimming through the Santa Barbara Channel, with most sightings taking place between December and May. In fact, the only endangered population of orcas is the Southern Resident Distinct Population Segment, which encompasses whales living along southeast Alaska down through Central California. This emphasizes the significance of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s support of designating a whale heritage site in the Santa Barbara Channel.

The Whales Are Here!

The Whale exhibit focuses on whale diversity in the Santa Barbara Channel and their positive impact on climate change. Taking inspiration from comics and graphic novels, the permanent exhibit incorporates text panels and drone footage to illustrate how whales are helping to save our environment and is part of a nationwide alliance, including the Santa Barbara Zoo, and the Botanic Gardens to present programming addressing climate change.

Emily Falke, the museum’s curator spent weeks designing and mounting the permanent exhibit and the extensive collection of children’s art displayed on the second floor gallery walls, assisted by her team and Lydia Kaestner, Collections Manager.

Professional artists Kelly Clause and John Baran’s whale images are also included in the gallery on the second floor of the museum. “This is such an unusual innovative exhibit,” exclaimed Falke. “Working collaboratively with the various teams that were needed, resulted in the largest project in our history. I’m so proud to have been a part of it!”

A Night of Tuareg Music from Niger

LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD

Fatou Seidi Ghali, lead vocalist and performer of Les Filles de Illighadad is one of the only Tuareg female guitarists in Niger.

Sneaking away with her older brother’s guitar, she taught herself to play. While Fatou’s role as the first female Tuareg guitarist is groundbreaking, it is just as interesting for her musical direction. In a place where gender norms have created two divergent musics, Fatou and Les Filles are reasserting the role of tende in Tuareg guitar. In lieu of the djembe or the drum kit, so popular in contemporary Tuareg rock bands, Les Filles de Illighadad incorporates the traditional drum and the pounding calabash, half-buried in water.

Reading Between the Lines: Identifying and interrogating the white supremacy within campus sexual assault policy

Dr. Carrie Samuels Dr. Carrie Samuels will discuss her research on white middle class cultural norms as they relate to campus sexual misconduct and assault policies. With their historic emphasis on response actions like contacting law enforcement, these policies have presented various binds for Black, indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) students. Dr. Samuels argues a race-conscious approach to campus sexual assault prevention and response, particularly within predominantly white institutions (PWIs), is vital for the creation of policies that adequately account for the needs and concerns of all students.

Dr. Samuels is an award-winning scholar and author on campus sexual violence. Her expertise is specifically located in the application of feminist critical discourse theory, queer theory, and critical race theory to the epidemic of rape and sexual assault occurring on campuses across the U.S. She currently serves as Deputy Director of Mission & Culture for the Cascade AIDS Project.
