Creating Hope In Our Community

A

N INSPIRATIONAL CONVERSATION ON CREATING HOPE between His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and Pico Iyer, presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures, will be the keynote address for a new programatic series, Creating Hope that begins Tuesday, May 18th at 8:30pm PDT (Wednesday, May 19th at 9am IST).

“No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that’s our real disaster,” His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama has said. His vision will serve as a grounding point for what follows.

Because this moment in time calls for Optimism, Resilience, Courage, and Vision — A&L has responded with Creating Hope. “During the past year, our community has once again faced an unforeseen challenge with strength and grace; it’s a big burden to shoulder, and we at A&L want our community to know that they are not alone in this,” shared Celesta M. Billeci, A&L Miller McCune Executive Director.

The Creating Hope initiative was organized to bridge between “where we are now, and where we want to be” - with the idea we can create hope – but only if we do it together.

The 2021-2022 Creating Hope program has been structured to inspire through shared experiences – online, outdoors, in schools, in theaters, and in alternative spaces. By engaging thought-leaders, creative problem-solvers, and arts visionaries, Creating Hope programs will strengthen human connection, bridge Jane Goodall our partisan divides, promote emotional well-being, joy and compassion, and envision positive change.

“Arts & Lectures has a unique ability to bring together the wonder, the ideas, the creativity and, yes, the hope that we all need to come through this stronger than ever. I like to borrow from one of my heroes, the late civil rights leader John Lewis, who said that we must be headlights, not tail lights. This idea has been guiding our programming for a year now, and I truly feel determined to help us move forward together,” continued Billeci.

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama first visited UC Santa Barbara in 1984. He returned in 1991, two years after receiving the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize. In June 1991, the university announced the creation of the Tibetan Cultural Studies endowment. Various donors contributed gifts in an effort to preserve, protect, and learn from the traditions of Tibetan culture. His Holiness again visited the campus in 1997 to inaugurate the endowment, and in 2001 the funds were used to establish the XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Chair in Bryan Stevenson Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies, in the Department of Religious Studies. His Holiness the Dalai Lama most recently visited UC Santa Barbara in 2009.

Commenting on His Holiness’ virtual visit as part of the Creating Hope initiative, Billeci added, “We are grateful to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Pico Iyer, two people who epitomize hope, for marking the beginning this moment of optimism with a conversation that we know will be nothing short of inspiring.”

Additional spring programming highlights include: the finale of UCSB Arts & His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama Lectures’ 2020-2021 House Calls and Race to Justice series, featuring virtual events with Jane Goodall, Yo-Yo Ma, Bryan Stevenson, and more; community book giveaways of Anne Lamott’s Dusk, Night, Dawn and Arthur C. Brooks’ Love Your Enemies; a return to the West Wind Drive-In; and more.

SBIFF Writers Panel Celebrates the Pens Behind the Big Screen OR THE FIRST TIME IN SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL HISTORY, screenwriters from all of this year’s Oscar-nominated screenplays joined the festival’s Writers Panel. Moderated by Anne Thompson, Editor-at-Large for IndieWire, the panel offered a personal glimpse into the minds behind some of the year’s best films as the writers explored their pasts, inspirations, and the nature of originality in the film industry.

“I have to say that this is a game-changer of a year,” shared Darius Marder (Sound of Metal) on April 3rd. “This is an unusual year, not just for COVID but for the fact that this is a different look at a lot of films... I’d like to think that Hollywood is maybe starting to understand that bravery isn’t craziness.”

The panel also featured Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Florian Zeller (The Father), Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami...), Kenny and Keith Lucas (Judas and the Black Messiah), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Peter Baynham (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), and Ramin Bahrani (The White Tiger).

The writers began by relating their personal journeys to becoming screenwriters, showing that each individual’s path was as unique as their respective work. Keith and Kenny Lucas were originally stand-up comedians, while Baynham turned to radio writing after a brief stint with the British Merchant Navy. Sorkin, Powers, and Zeller found their way through playwriting, while others, including Marder and Zhao, began writing stories when they were young.

Panelists then spoke to their inspirations

and processes of creating their Oscar-nominated films. Marder shared he wrote Sound of Metal after viewing director Derek Cianfrance’s unscripted footage of a metal band, persisting through financing challenges to have his vision realized. Fennell discussed how she subverted audience expectations while crafting Promising Young Woman to create a revenge thriller “that felt like it had a real woman at the center of it.”

Bahrani was drawn to write The White Tiger screenplay because of his friendship with the novel’s author. Yet despite this familiarity, he faced challenges in reworking the novel for film. Zhao also adapted Nomadland from a book, speaking to how she captured its essence by centering the film around one character and feelings of collective loss.

Zeller further discussed the adaptation process, having originally written The Father as a French play. He candidly shared that he made it an English language film so Anthony Hopkins could play the lead role. Powers also adapted his play One Night in Miami..., explaining he created something he would've wanted to see as a young man.

“For me it was always about the idea of exploring Black men’s humanity, it was the one thing I think was often missed when I saw representations of Black men on film and on stage,” he said.

Chung crafted his film, Minari, with a specific audience in mind as well — his daughter and family. Drawing elements from his life, he struck a balance in the film’s seriousness by centering it on a child’s perspective.

Sorkin and Keith and Kenny Lucas all approached history with a new light in their screenplays. Sorkin shared he tackled The Trial of the Chicago 7 by dividing it between the courtroom, riot, and Abbie Hoffman and Tom Hayden’s personal story. Keith and Kenny Lucas also spoke to how they wrote a compelling narrative with multiple elements by juxtaposing the stories of Fred Hampton and William O’Neal.

Yet Baynham faced a challenge unique from the others as he worked on Borat’s sequel. As many of the individuals depicted were unaware they were in the movie, the screenplay changed daily to accommodate reality.

obstacles and we’ve got goals and all that, we just have the extra problem of the real world interfering,” commented Baynham.

Before closing the conversation, Thompson asked the panel to address the difficulty of having original screenplays produced. Panelists voiced that finances and the film industry’s expectations create complications, with Sorkin voicing that studios are more comfortable working with established stories. Yet the writers expressed hope that this was changing, agreeing that originality ultimately distinguishes memorable films.

“I also think it’s the year of the screenplay,” remarked Sorkin. “I really do. The screenplays represented here in this Zoom call are fantastic.”

Gail Rink was hired as its Executive Director. Joanne and Gail were joined by Volunteer Services Director Dana VanderMey and Director of Family and Children’s Services Joy Jannsen and (all) became a dynamic force in highly regarded end-of-life emotional and spiritual support programs in Santa Barbara.

in that quaint cottage on Junipero Street have today expanded to encompass 20 different types of bereavement support groups and support groups in every public junior and high school in South SB County and employ 26 counselors and therapists. Joanne retired from Hospice of Santa Barbara in 2007, but returned for six months in January of 2018 when current Hospice of Santa Barbara CEO David Selberg asked her to return when the Thomas Fire and Debris Flow disasters pushed referrals up by 123 percent, Joanne said “yes” without hesitation.

Joanne’s influence and impact will carry on in our community for many years to come. She left an enduring and indelible mark on those who crossed her path in her career and life. Joanne was quite simply “love in action.” We know that the reception Joanne is receiving on “the other side” is nothing short of a celebratory homecoming for the woman who touched so many. For those of us left behind, we will miss and remember her always. **The community will be invited to a virtual memorial and gathering to honor the life and legacy of Joanne, hosted by the Talbot family and Hospice of Santa Barbara. Donations may be given in Joanne’s memory to Hospice of Santa Barbara, The Friendship Center, and VNA Health.

Opera Santa Barbara to Present Drive-In Performance of Don Pasquale

M

USIC, LAUGHTER, AND A STUNNING LIGHT SHOW awaits at the Ventura County Fairgrounds this weekend, as Opera Santa Barbara presents Don Pasquale. In a live, drive-in opera experience like no other, director Josh Shaw, founder of Pacific Opera Project, will present an entertaining new version of this classic opera, setting it within the world of the 1920s.

The performance will take place at 7:30pm, Saturday, April 10th. Guests will be able to enjoy the performance via their cars’ stereo, and view the live performance on large screens situated around the stage.

“Opera Santa Barbara is committed to advocating and showing the way toward the return of live performances with in-person audiences,” said Kostis Protopapas, OSB’s Artistic and General Director who will also conduct the show. “We believe that there is no substitute for the in-person, communal artistic experience, and that our organization is equipped to provide it safely.”

Presenting a showcase of remarkable talent, the performance will feature soprano Jana McIntyre, tenor Matthew Grills, bass Andrew Potter, and baritone Efraín Solís, a former OSB Studio Artist.

“Don Pasquale is only the second, live in-person performance offered by a Santa Barbara arts organization since March of 2020, and we hope that the public will demonstrate its desire for live events and its trust for our company by attending it,” added Protopapas.

ÚSICA, RISAS Y UN IMPRESIONANTE ESPECTÁCULO DE LUCES SE ESPERA en el recinto ferial del condado de Ventura este fin de semana, mientras Opera Santa Barbara presenta Don Pasquale. En una experiencia de ópera en vivo y autocine como ninguna otra, el director Josh Shaw, fundador de Pacific Opera Project, presentará una nueva y entretenida versión de esta ópera clásica, situándola en el mundo de 1920.

La función tendrá lugar a las 7:30pm, sábado 10 de abril. Los invitados podrán disfrutar de la presentación a través del estéreo de sus coches y ver la presentación en vivo en pantallas grandes situadas alrededor del escenario.

April 3rd: It took an hour to bring this 1am fire under control. Bath St. at Montecito St. VEGETATION FIRE into a business shed. Cause unknown. Train traffic just resumed after a stop for firefighter safety. Overhaul will be extensive. Santa Barbara City Fire and police on scene.

Hearing two arrests have been made – arson and drug charges expected to be filed after the early morning Santa Barbara fire along the train tracks at the Bath St. dead end. A homeless camp was at the point of origin. Specific cause under investigation.

April 2nd: At gunpoint, one person is arrested after an early morning break-in at the DIRECT RELIEF building.

SBCC Stories: Chapter 1: Friends and Family Review by Alex Henteloff / Special to VOICE

BCC STORIES: CHAPTER 1, FRIENDS AND FAMILY, is a set of stories by SBCC students, faculty, and staff and told by the authors, with actors performing the last two stories. It is the first of three performances all now available from The Theatre Groups at Santa Barbara City College through April 17th. The story line-up included: “Richard” by Paloma Espino is a rich journey where she meets Richard, who has lived on a boat in the harbor for 20 years, but whose body has failed him. Paloma finds him and moves him to where he’ll be for the rest of his life. She visits daily, becoming his friend and hearing intimate tales of his life, including the tragedy of his daughter’s early death. Over the next few months, as his health fails, their bond deepens and she continues to always say, “I love you, Richard.” At the end, he says, “I love you, too.”

“A Song for Mom” by Becky Saffold. Learning to play piano at age 58 so she could surprise her mom on her 90th birthday by playing and singing Sentimental Journey was a great challenge for Becky. Practice was supposed to take 15 minutes a day, five days a week; but she struggled through one hour per day and seven days per week, and then failed to play it in class. At the party, Becky asked all there to join in and she played and they all sang beautifully. It was a joyous finale to her mom’s life.

“My Arms” by Laura Kenig are the memories of her daughter’s life. Rich, heartfelt, strong, and tender, this is a joyful, treasured look a motherhood.

“My Friend Sam” by Kyndra Gedney tells of friendship from childhood into adulthood that goes from loving to breaking because of drugs with Kyndra unable to reach back to Sam until it’s too late. It’s a very strong story.

“Quiet” by Lois Phillips walks us through her encounter with her father’s new wife, Irene. From wistful goings on with her children, four and nine, to the unpleasant dinner at a posh restaurant, Lois holds it together until Irene toasts and Lois reaches for her glass and spills her wine. Her daughter looks at Irene

“Meeka” by Scout Wilkins is an utterly delightful story told as a delightful tale of her purchases of stuffed chickens. Starting with one hen, back to the store after closing time and going in to buy two more chicks! Then, she and her traveling companion Marianne went off on their adventure. They went to the Idaho Potato Museum-with the chicks-and were thrown out after 15 minutes. Several years later, Scout and Meeka are happily seeing their on-line site of ‘chickens’ a successful venture.

“Memory” by Stuart Orenstein recounts surgery from his birth that cut open his abdomen and started his life battling the angel of death. But he was saved by a Jewish tradition of adding the names of deceased relatives so the angel could not find him!

“Grateful” by John Behring and presented by Julie Norin Fox. Late August, hot and raining. Mom, Bonnie, sat in her chair, her husband’s chair, with memories. She was grateful in her small Arizona home. Then this former 5’9” beauty slowly got up and out of the house. Outside, she closed her eyes and was freed from her pain. She heard the rain and, overcome with joy, started to dance. Slowly she sank to the ground baptized by the raindrops and thought of her husband and children and the pain was gone. Then, time stopped; she was free.

New Engines Allow for Clean Rides on the Condor Express

ASTER IS NOW IN OUR REAR VIEW MIRROR, with egg salad sandwiches as a reminder of the festive weekend. The spring-like weather, although a little on the chilly side, brought a bevy of visitors to the restaurants along the harbor walkway, Stearns Wharf, and Cabrillo Boulevard. In a word, Business was booming! It was much like the Before Days and, from the outside, who would have guessed that a year’s hiatus has been upon us?

That said, not all of us were Rip Van Winkle stacking Zzz’s under a tree for those many months.

Much was happening behind the scenes all over town and in the harbor community: Roofs repaired, gardens re-imagined, garages and storerooms cleaned, cars replaced … well, you get the idea! One of the most prominent boats in the harbor, the beloved and world renowned Condor Express, is another example of the serious work in progress during the Coronavirus pandemic slowdown.

Owner Hiroko Benko decided to take advantage of the enforced pause to replace the Condor Express’s original four engines. The whale watching craft, originally built in 2002, was essentially destroyed and rebuilt after a disastrous fire in 2013. The engines, however, escaped damage and remained completely functional. The 100 ton 74 foot catamaran was preparing under the Clean Air Act to meet the current updated environmental requirements to be completed within the year to come. The quiet months of the pandemic seemed the ideal time to beat the deadline and install four new $150,000 oneand-half-ton engines made by the Swedish company, Scania, part of the Volkswagen group.

Out of commission for a period of three months, the Condor Express found a temporary home in the Ventura Boatyard where the engine installation took place. And what a project it was! The result, however, is spectacular… and in complete compliance with the Clean Air Act. “Environmentally not only are these Hiroko Benko engines cost-effective because they burn far less diesel fuel, but they are very low emissions so you don’t have dirty air coming out of the boat,” stated Captain Dave Beezer on the Condor’s website. “We have a lot of speed so we can get further out to see the whales and cover more distance, so it is really a win-win situation.”

During this uncertain time, the idea of survival is of primary importance. Whether it be personal health, sustaining our businesses, continuing to keep the venues in Santa Barbara viable and functioning becomes an issue of major importance. The Condor Express is certainly an example of an entity that could be considered the ultimate survivor. Not to mention its owner, my friend Hiroko Benko! Within two days of the passing of her husband, Fred Benko, their beloved craft caught fire early in the morning in March of 2013. Hiroko, while still trying to process the change in her life that was brought about by the death of her husband, had to deal instantly with the damage and repairs needed to keep the Condor Express afloat. Additionally, she had to continue on in her husband’s place as business owner and keeper of the legacy Fred left to the community. There was little time for mourning. The Condor Express was taken to the Ventura Boatyard for a four month stay for reconstruction. Rather then leaving their harbor slip empty, Hiroko engaged an older, smaller version of the Condor located in San Diego harbor to take the place of the whale watcher and to serve as a fishing boat for tourists and fishermen. Upon the Condor Express’s return to Santa Barbara, prosperity returned in large part to a dedicated and loyal group of crew members, local residents, and visitors.

“In thinking of that period in my life,” Hiroko recalled, “the kindness and support of the entire community is what I most remember. Living here in Santa Barbara is indeed special. The outpouring of love is something for which I am grateful and continue to be throughout our latest upgrade.” Despite COVID restrictions which allow only a fraction of Condor Express’s full capacity of 149, if last weekend was an example, the vessel hosted the maximum allowable group of sightseers enjoying views of gray and humpback whales, dolphins, and the beautiful sights off the Santa Barbara coastline.

It’s National Poetry Month and Santa Barbara will Name a New Poet Laureate - Emma Trelles

TEPPING INTO LINE WITH A GROWING NUMBER OF MUCH LOVED AND RESPECTED LOCAL POET LAUREATES, Emma Trelles has been selected to serve as the City of Santa Barbara’s next Poet Laureate. Trelles will commence a two-year term on Tuesday, April 13th when she receives the city’s Poetry Month Proclamation. She succeeds Laure-Anne Bosselaar, who has served as the City’s Poet Laureate since 2019.

Trelles is the daughter of Cuban immigrants and the author of Tropicalia, published by University of Notre Dame Press, which won the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize, the first book prize to be awarded to a Latinx poet living and writing in the U.S. The Poet Laureate program was established in 2005 by the City of Santa Barbara. The honorary position actively participates in ceremonial, educational, and cultural activities in the community.

“Our city’s Poet Laureate position speaks right to the heart of our community,” observed Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo.

Trelles’ work has been published widely and anthologized in publications such as Best American Poetry and Best of the Net. Trelles has presented her poems across the country and received fellowships from CantoMundo and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. She is currently writing her third collection of poems, Courage and the Clock.

Trelles teaches composition and creative writing at Santa Barbara City College. Since 2014, she has curated the Mission Emma Trelles Poetry Series, featuring Latinx and diverse poets from Santa Barbara, throughout California, and as far away as El Salvador.

“Throughout my work curating, teaching, and writing poetry, I’ve also been committed to how my role as a poet can bring people together,” said Trelles.

As the official “Home of the Poet Laureate,” the Santa Barbara Public Library is a major partner, along with the City of Santa Barbara and the SB County Office of Arts & Culture, in stewardship of the program.

“Santa Barbara Public Library is honored to continue to work with the Santa Barbara Poet Laureate to celebrate poetry in our community and make the literary arts more accessible to all,” added Library Director Jessica Cadiente.

Poets Laureate have had the dual task of celebrating joyous occasions in the city as well as supporting community efforts for resilience and recovery.

According to Bosselaar, “There’s a poet in all of us — it is essential to remember that, especially during these times of isolation and self-quarantine. So, let’s continue to celebrate those poets among us in our special Santa Barbara community: poets young and old, from all backgrounds and origins, for poetry offers us the skill and capacity to sing about us all!”

HAVE HEARD SO MANY POETS SAY that they feel like outcasts, until they meet other outcasts and dreamers, people who seem to feel like them, and suddenly they feel affirmed in their difference, and, as it turns out, their place in community. It is likely what Safiya Sinclair means in her elegant poem, The Ragged and the Beautiful published in the always engaging “immigrant and refugee” journal, The Bare Life Review, when she declares being “strange/ and unbelonging” as, being, at the same time, “perfectly” beautiful.

March Employment Augers A Roaring 2020’s

I

T MAY BE DIFFICULT FOR NAYSAYERS TO FIND FAULT with the March unemployment report, even if they believe that too much aid is going into social programs, when 916,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs have been added. It looks like March economic data augers a recovery that may lead to a decade of robust growth in the overall economy.

Companies are already hiring en masse, in spite of a winter that froze Texas and the record floods and tornadoes that have devastated much of the south.

Almost all the sectors are hiring, including a huge jump in the ISM’s Manufacturing Index to a 38-year high of 64.7, which means 65 percent of manufacturing businesses surveyed were expanding.

Much of the hiring has come because happy consumers, with an additional $1400 check in their pockets, are dining out and traveling more, but also because the housing market is booming—prompting 110,000 new construction hires in March.

The 916,000 new payroll jobs are just the beginning of this hiring boom that must bring back ten million jobs to return to pre-pandemic levels. That is why Biden’s $3 trillion infrastructure spending will be needed as well.

So thank goodness for the $5 trillion in recovery aid already raised by congress that is encouraging even restaurants and other leisure services to hire 280,000 new workers, Education and Health 101,000, and Government

136,000 workers that are just the beginning of what is needed to make this decade this into a decade-long recovery.

The official unemployment rate, meanwhile, slipped to six percent from 6.2 percent, the Labor Department said last Friday. Yet the official rate doesn’t capture nearly four million people who lost their jobs last year and aren’t counted in the numbers because they left the labor force.

It is also why Consumer confidence surged in March to a one-year high as more Americans were vaccinated and states began to open up for business. The index of consumer confidence shot up to 109.7 this month from a revised 90.4 in February, the Conference Board said last Tuesday.

Confidence may be rising because some three million vaccines now administered per day may have 70 percent of American adults vaccinated by July, say the experts.

But new variants of COVID-19 are beginning to pop up, which has epidemiologists worried because it’s causing a plateauing of the infection rates at an unacceptably high level, according to the CDC. CDC statistics indicate that 153.6 million doses have been administered. 21.7 percent of the population over 18 is fully vaccinated, and 38.4 percent of the population over 18 has had at least one dose. That is, 99.6 million people have had at least one dose.

Infection rates have plateaued because too many variants of COVID-19 are popping up in some states that worry the CDC. Winning the race between the spreading variants and administering enough vaccinations to stop their spread is the key to succeeding.

“I think a package that consists of investments in people, investments in infrastructure, will help to create good jobs in the American economy,” testified Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in congressional hearings last week, “and changes in the tax structure will help to pay for those programs.”

problem with any inflationary bulges that might occur with so much spending because it was spending that would boost productivity as well as employment, generating even more growth.

A Good Friday Visit With Comic Master Bill Murray

He often provides a steady presence as an emcee and his questions rarely veer into the personal realm, but as a historian and film expert, his questions are based on behindthe scenes film experiences. Maltin unspooled a collection of film clips throughout the interview, mentioning Murray’s depth of roles in movies including broad comedies such as Meatballs, Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, and The Little Shop of Horrors, and more serious fare in Groundhog Day, Ed Wood, and Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman. He also has had quite a career with leading roles in Wes Anderson’s acting ensembles gathered for Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and the animated Isle of Dogs. He will again have another leading role in Wes Anderson’s anticipated comedydrama, The French Dispatch, the release and launch delayed by the current pandemic.

Murray seemed straightforward and relaxed as he fielded career-based questions from the host responding with a detached air and appreciating the attention on the subject of his films. While Maltin was speaking from the identified El Encanto Hotel, Murray was beamed from a mysterious location, quipping that he was in some kind of ‘safe house’ for Screen Actors Guild members. CADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED ACTOR AND COMEDY LEGEND BILL MURRAY was honored on Friday, April 2nd in a live-streamed discussion with moderator Leonard Maltin. It offered an overview of Murray’s longstanding career, where he has constantly taken risks,yet remains as popular as ever, a rare perch for any Hollywood figure.

One of the highlights of this 36th Festival edition was this altogether rare appearance. Of SBIFF, Maltin mentioned that “after 31 years, the festival is going strong.” About Bill Murray, he shared, “Murray has been taken for granted, but he has carved own path, doing unexpected things. As an actor, his catalogue is second to none and along the way he has gained the respect of the audience. A risk taker, he scores a lot of points, what a variety he has given us and showing us his ingenuity in his career… He is one of a kind, developing a comic persona that’s still as potent as ever, while expanding his reach as an actor with many dazzling and risky stops along the way. I have been a big fan, so it is a privilege and honor to present Bill Murray with

I was always interested in this place.” Murray is the ultimately congenial movie star and can Bill Murray relate to all kinds of people. He seemed genuinely honored by the award, thinking when first approached that it was some kind of memorial for Leonard Maltin. He expressed delight when he found out it was his own tribute.

Murray described his co-stars and directors in glowing terms especially Andie MacDowell in Groundhog Day (“she had a spellbinding quality”).

About the film collage, Murray said “this is huge fun to watch, like my greatest hits, and the clips included all my best shots in those movies. Believe me, I have worked with the greatest writers and cinematographers in the business.” About his acting start he mentioned, “the more fun I had, the better I did. I started becoming a fan of John Wayne and really appreciating acting in movies.”

In Tootsie, he described the set environment and how the professional crew kept it grounded

while the director Sydney Pollack and star Dustin Hoffman were fighting. “Sydney and Dustin went to war every single day,” reminiscing, “it was a great group of people, we knew Tootsie was different and was going to be BIG. It was really about women’s rights, and I always miss that guy (director) Sydney Pollack.” About film acting he mentioned, “Movie making, you have a line that’s funny, but no one laughing until nine months later when it is released.”

About Wes Anderson he said, “he knows exactly what he wants to do with his movies, he is exceptionally talented as a storyteller.”

At the conclusion of the compelling presentation, Maltin then introduced director Sofia Coppola via a link-up at a probable Northern California location. Coppola worked closely with Murray in the lauded Lost in Translation over a decade ago. With her brother and filmmaker/screenwriter Roman Coppola at her side, she gracefully and formally presented the award to Murray.

Murray was touched, honored, and delighted with the award so elegantly handled by the directors of On the Rocks. If the event had been heard live at the Arlington Theatre, you can bet there would have been resounding standing applause for this extraordinary actor who has given film fans so many outstanding moments over five decades.

Art and Hope at The End of The Tunnel

HAT A WEEK IT HAS BEEN! For the first time in many months, I was able to see some of my dear friends. Now that so many of us have received both doses of the vaccine, we were able to exchange safe hugs. Local museums have also begun to open their doors. Step by step. I was lucky to be invited to the Hammer Museum on Friday, the second day that the museum was open to members and the press. Its biennial exhibition Made in L.A. 2020: (a version) was originally set to open in June of 2020. Because of the pandemic, the Hammer remained closed with the exhibition fully installed. Now, almost a year later, the exhibition will be open to the public on April 17th. (The second part of Made in L.A., hosted by The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, is also scheduled to reopen on April 17th. ) The exhibition presents a wide variety of artists working in different mediums. Here are some of my favorite selections.

The film by Harmony Holiday (b.1982), God’s Suicide, explores “black male vulnerability as its central subject” through the renowned author James Baldwin, and the artist’s own father, Jimmy Holiday. The film focuses on Baldwin’s rarely acknowledged multiple suicide attempts. Harmony Holiday - a dancer, writer, and experimental film maker - has created a Harmony Holiday, Still from God’s Suicide, 2020 deeply emotional and visually captivating work of art. Trust me, you will be unable to avert your eyes from the screen.

I was particularly impressed not only with the selection of artworks in this year’s Made in L.A., but how the artworks are presented. Independent curators Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler, along with the Hammer’s assistant curator of performance Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, created conversations and connections between artists and the museum’s space through the engaging way the exhibition was installed. Take this juxtaposition of Reynaldo Rivera’s gigantic black and white photograph with Monica Majoli’s watercolor woodcut prints. Both artists focus on queer culture through different subjects, mediums, and even time periods.

Majoli (b.1963) presents Blueboys, named after one of the earliest national gay magazines. Rivera (b.1964), shares selections from his photographic archive of Los Angeles’s queer night club scene of the 1980s and 90s.

Figurative paintings by Brandon Landers (b.1985) seem to rise from the wall with their heavily textured surfaces, shaped by the thick application of paint with a palette knife. Most of them are based on memories of his childhood in South Central LA. In many cases, Landers purposefully distorts body proportions, presenting outlandishly large smiles, misshapen heads, and text painted backwards. All above make his characters - literally and figuratively - larger than life...

1969 it holds pace with the most contemporary, experimental Reynaldo Rivera, Performer, Le Bar (background), 1997. art presented in Made in L.A. While living in Paris in the 1960s Nicola L. (b. 1932) began developing her Pénétrables series, sculptures where the viewers were invited to interact with the work by using their own bodies. Take a look at the video (https://tinyurl.com/28w4xpnm) demonstrating the playful way Nicola intended us to engage with her phantasmagorical sculpture. Unfortunately, because of health restrictions, visitors are not allowed to interact with this enticing installation.

Lia Halloran in her studio Now I want to give you a peek at the studios of several LA artists I visited last week. Lia Halloran, in her sprawling studio in Eagle Rock, showed me her latest deep blue cyanotypes. She creates these works on paper by painting on semi-transparent film, then placing this film on top of paper coated with lightsensitive emulsion—the film and paper are then exposed to direct sunlight. These magical artworks make you feel that you are travelling through the universe.

Across town, in Pasadena, Kate Ingold invited me into her Brandon D. Landers, 1 of 1, 2020 studio to view her latest work. Pictured here is a quilt she has embroidered with gold and indigo threads. Repeated several hundred times across the quilt are the words “not this”, which speak to the apophatic tradition of theology. Mystical in its nature, the apophatic religious practice defines The Divine by only what cannot be said about the “perfect goodness that is God.” This is another example of art inspired by religion, mystery, and words of prayer.

Visiting the studio of Manfred Müller in Marina del Rey, I saw hundreds of his sculptural paper works occupying every square inch of wall space. Only a few of these brilliant blue and blood red sculptures are framed, most of them are still waiting for their final touches. Often, when I visit artist’s studios, Kate Ingold, Apophatic Quilt, 2021 it makes me feel that I have the privilege to step into a kitchen where I can observe the chef cooking elaborate meals. The only difference is that instead of tasting and smelling aromas of food, I can inhale the artists “cooking” through my eyes. Upon entering Müller’s studio, brimming with energy and color, one simply wants to stay until Manfred politely kicks you out.

My friends, I am looking forward to the days when the pandemic will be completely behind us, and I can invite you to visit the studios of Los Angeles artists as a part of my Fine Art of Art Collecting Class. Stay tuned...

Sullivan Goss: An American Gallery

A Double Feature for our Minds’ Eye

NEW KIND OF WHEEL TURNS THE CLAY OF THESE ARTISTS, challenging the galaxy with the melding of new and ancient arts, as the parched earth opens its arms to Patrick Hall & Lynda Weinman: Kindred Spirits and Maria Rendón: Rain, two new exhibitions recently opened at Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery.

As the community begins to peep out of their pandemic foxholes, these exhibitions (and the Real Women exhibition sandwiched between) offer inspiration for the future.

What have we learned about the future? Science is important - and so is nature. Without the new vaccines, many of would still be sequestered and fearful. Without the beauty of the natural world, the last year would have pushed many of us over the edge! So, our bodies and the natural world need cultural sustenance, and so do our minds. These exhibitions work together and offer both. Kindred Spirits is, according to gallery owner and curator Nathan Vonk, “a groundbreaking exhibition of ceramic sculpture by Patrick Hall and Lynda Weinman, a collaborative effort that has the potential to have a lasting effect on the world of contemporary Maria Rendón La Cumbre, 2020 | Mixed media on panel ceramics.”

Born at Clay Studio, a recently established 28,000 sq ft. state-of-the-art hub for ceramics arts in Goleta, the collaboration Work by Patrick Hall & Lynda Weinman brings together Hall, a traditionally trained ceramics artist who received an MFA in ceramics from UCSB in 1984 and Weinman, an early pioneer in computer and web graphics who has enjoyed a fruitful and varied career as a college professor, author of numerous how-to books, and a mega successful online education entrepreneur. In 2015 she also committed to ceramics, including 3D printing.

The results of the collaboration offer the enthusiasm that comes from pushing the boundaries and then making a home there.

“As the artist, I am over the moon enthusiastic about this craft, and everything I do is play,” Weinman enthused in response to an emailed question. “There are moments of supreme joy when a piece turns out as intended, or even better, at times!” She continued, “In the beginning, there were many happy accidents and learning experiences. I can now sit down and design exactly what’s in my mind’s eye. It took a lot of practice and failures, but I am now there and it’s a great feeling.”

On Hill’s side of the equation, he noted (also via email), “We [Clay Studios] have been teaching 3-D printing via Zoom where students learn the digital design programs, design a piece, email us the file and we print what they designed, then we ship the completed work to them. ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. I think that is really cool. With the scale of our facility and our advanced equipment we have, we are in the process of taking a leadership role at the intersection of art and technology. This is very exciting!”

Kindred Spirits represents the fruits of the pandemic time labor for these technically skilled artist/craftspeople. “Making art is at its core a self indulgent activity generally. An artist considers what they are making and changes, edits, and manipulates according to their aesthetic and intentions. When you collaborate in the making you are ‘riffing’ off each other. If you can Maria Rendón Falling, 2020 get out of your own head and put your ego aside, be open to the unfamiliar, learning, expanding Mixed media on panel your tool box, possibilities previously not considered show up. I believe art is many things, a visual language is certainly one of art’s important components. Collaborating expands an artist’s vocabulary in unexpected ways. I am grateful to have worked so closely with Lynda on this series of work and expect to work together more in the future as we hone and expand the vocabulary of our new language together,” Hall concluded.

The viewer’s experience of Kindred Spirits wouldn’t be the same, though, without the colorful greeting in the front gallery that ushers visitors on and into the next to galleries.

All natural and all abstract, Rendón noted, Work by Patrick Hall & Lynda Weinman “My paintings are inspired by the elements of the natural world. Through the collaboration between my observational drawings of nature, my deliberate marks, and the unexpected and generous behavior of water and paint, my desire is to make paintings that resemble nature’s forms, its sensuality, its mystery, its cycles, its precariousness and its resilience.”

She also explained, that the title of the show, Rain, “relates to some of the water that I use to dilute my paint. I collect rain water every year and mix it with tap water and paint, which is what I use as my main material.”

For Rain curator, Jeremy Tessmer, Rendón’s work imparts a deeply spiritual quality to the work. “Maria’s surfaces record creation and destruction. They show time itself. Thematically, they deal with Nature’s endlessly rolling wheel of life and death, where neither fire nor drought can ever forestall the triumphant return to life and beauty. The rain always returns. The sun always rises. Rainbows glow and the flowers bloom.”

Remember the anticipation as we entered the theater? Once inside, we walked down into a fantasized Spanish courtyard, part real and part painted. Arthur Beaumont: Art of the Sea An exhibit of 53 paintings chronicling the accomplishments of the US Navy from the USS Constitution to atomic bomb tests and expeditions to the North and South Poles. On display until May 30, 2021.
