The orchestra will perform her critically acclaimed Symphony No. 1, originally premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933, and inspired by Dvorak’s New World Symphony, similarly incorporating folk tunes and hymn-like melodies that evoke a range of American flavors.

The Marcus Roberts Trio, a long-term musical partnership between pianist Marcus Roberts, drummer Jason Marsalis, and bassist Rodney Jordan, is known for its virtuosic style and an entirely new approach to jazz

trio performance. While most jazz trios have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music. The trio is known for having almost telepathic communication on the stage. Amanda Kloots’ Resilient and Open Heart Captivates illuminate Speaker Series Audiences Dear Friends, If you weren’t able to view it, I’d like to recap the powerful presentation by Amanda Kloots as part of our illuminate Speaker Series.

While Amanda is an actress, dancer, fitness instructor, and author, she is probably best known for the tragic loss of her husband Nick Cordero, a Broadway actor, to COVID. She laid bare for the audience her incredibly painful and public journey during Nick’s long, complicated, and grim illness and the grief that followed his death.

Amanda’s talk was, without a doubt, a tour de force in all the ways that matter for Hospice of Santa Barbara and our audiences. Her honesty and openness recounting her story and the lessons she learned was a gift to all of us who sat mesmerized by every detail.

Our host and interviewer for the evening, Geoff Green (a local celebrity in his own right), masterfully asked Amanda pointed questions about her 95 day experience in 2020, watching her beloved husband, Nick Cordero, get sicker and sicker and then finally die from COVID, despite many heroic measures to save his life.

Amanda expressed that “it feels natural to share Nick’s story,” which was one of love and bravery during those 95 days. She relayed that it felt like being on a roller coaster ride – up one day and down the next and how important it was to her to write about her journey, sharing the co-authoring role of a new book with her beloved sister, Anna. Now a best seller, Live Your Life: My Story of Loving and Losing Nick Cordero, Amanda explained that writing the book was both cathartic and allowed for closure to Nick’s story.

“Grieving is tough ... you need to find one thing a day that keeps you smiling, and you will see that you have a beautiful bouquet,” she explained.

Geoff asked Amanda to share some of the strategies she used to ‘keep moving forward’ to which she responded with a variety of her helpful personal techniques: • Sharing stories is powerful – that is what helped get me through those traumatic days of Nick’s illness and then finally, his death in 2020.

• Writing – the more you express it (trauma and pain), the more you heal.

Amanda spoke often and lovingly of their son Elvis, who was just an infant at the time of Nick’s illness and death. Elvis’ presence was a counterbalance to the overwhelming life and death decisions she faced on a weekly, if not daily, basis was truly a heart-wrenching experience.

We were all touched by Kloots’ honesty, her sincerity, and her resilient spirit. Talking about serious illness and death is not easy, whether it is recent, several years ago, or many years ago.

I am reminded of a book I read years ago

by Rick Warren (God’s Answers to Life’s Difficult Questions), as I was dealing with a family member’s end-of-life journey and subsequent death. It seems so apt to quote from Warren, as I recount Amanda’s presentation.

The four things for getting through those difficult times (of pain and loneliness) are utilize, minimize, recognize, and empathize: • The first way to deal with loneliness is to utilize your time wisely.

• The second way is to minimize the hurt.

• The third way is to recognize God’s presence (in whatever form God takes for you) • The fourth way is to empathize with other people’s needs.

Thank you, Amanda, and we send our best wishes to you as you move forward along life’s journey with an open spirit, a positive attitude, and a resilient heart, ready to love again. We deeply appreciate your raw and unfiltered sharing which was healing for us all.

State Street Advisory Committee to Take Sabbatical State Street Master Plan Consultant Hiring Process Continues

AKING A BREAK FOR THREE MONTHS, the State Street Advisory Committee is not scheduled to meet again until August, following the announcement and recommendation of city staff and the SSAC’s Chair and Vice Chair. During that time, a SSAC subcommittee will assist city staff in vetting applications from consultants, and the City Council’s State Street ad hoc committee will continue working on parades, parklets, and accessibility issues on State Street.

State Street Master Planner Tess Harris, other city staff, and SSAC Chair Dave Davis and Vice Chair Ken Saxon, recommended the break in an email sent out to SSAC members on May 10th.

The break arrives as city staff continue the process of selecting a consulting firm that will create the State Street Master Plan in collaboration with the SSAC and city staff. Eight firms have responded to the city’s second request for proposals, with city staff hoping to finalize a contract in July.

“We are tentatively scheduled to reconvene on Monday, August 15th, and we look forward to discussing the Master Plan roadmap and the role the SSAC will play in working with the consultant and city staff,” reads the email.

Meeting regularly since August 2021, the SSAC has 15 members, including ten appointed community members, three City Council members, a Planning Commissioner, and a Historic Landmarks Commissioner. Together, they are charged with guiding the creation of a State Street Master Plan, which will revitalize the State Street corridor and its adjacent areas, as well as liaison with the community. The city plans to finalize the plan by late 2023 or early 2024.

Over the course of its meetings, the SSAC has discussed issues

such as the State Street Master Plan’s scope of work and provided input on city staff’s request for proposals to hire a consulting firm. Members have also received educational presentations on subjects such as the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara Chapter’s 2020 Design Charrette and downtown traffic circulation.

While city staff will ultimately determine which firm to hire, a SSAC subcommittee — established by Chair Dave Davis and including Vice Chair Ken Saxon, Dianne Black, Hillary Blackerby, and Susanne Tejada — will review the city’s top four to five candidates’ scope of work. To prevent conflicts of interest, no identifying information will be on materials reviewed by the subcommittee.

Final firm interviews will then be conducted by city staff and Davis, who will not be acting in his role as SSAC Chair. Davis previously served as the city’s Community Development Director and City Planner for over 20 years.

According to the May 10th email, city staff will continue sending updates to SSAC members on the consultant selection process between now and August.

In the meantime, the City Council State Street ad hoc committee, made up of Councilmembers Oscar Gutierrez, Mike Jordan, and Meagan Harmon, will continue addressing interim changes on State Street.

Montecito Bank & Trust Opens Year With $2.39 Billion

HE FIRST QUARTER REPORT FOR MONTECITO BANK & TRUST reflects total assets grew $302.45 million, an increase of 14.43% during the 12-month period ending March 31, closing the quarter at $2.39 billion in assets.

“I am excited about the progress our communities have and continue to make on the road to recovery from the global pandemic, and we are proud to have been a part of that local and vital support system.,” stated Janet Garufis, Chairman and CEO of Montecito Bank and Trust. “We continue to wind down our PPP Forgiveness program, assisting clients with their applications daily, and anticipate complete resolution of that program by the end of next quarter.”

Strong deposit growth of $303.85 million or 16.14% year-over-year, pushed quarter-end deposit totals to $2.19 billion. Loan growth declined $186.07 million or 13.56% year-over-year due to Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan forgiveness with quarter-end loans totaling $1.19 billion. Excluding PPP loans forgiven in the first quarter, loan growth was $66.5 million or 6.04% year over year. Net income for the first quarter of $4.81 million was a 25.75% increase year-over-year. The bank’s total risk-based capital remains very strong at 13.90%, far exceeding the 10% regulatory minimum required to be considered well capitalized.

“While our first quarter results are strong, with loans and deposits continuing to grow, we do remain cautious about the potential impacts of rising rates and inflation. However, one thing remains certain — our commitment to the communities we serve and our dedication to a world-class experience for our residential, business and nonprofit communities,” continued Garufis.

HRISTY LOZANO’S REFUSAL TO SIGN A RELEASE FORM for the League of Women Voters caused the cancellation of the public forum for the office of Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools, which had been scheduled for Thursday, May 12th.

The public forum was organized to inform the public on important campaign issues and the positions of the two candidates running for the office of Superintendent of Schools for SB County: incumbent Susan Salcido and Christy Lozano.

LWV protocols and policies require candidates to agree to sign a Release Form, which ensures a fair and civil discussion. Lozano was informed by the LWV, “Our policies and procedures for our Candidate Forum, such as not providing the questions to be asked of each candidate in advance, and not allowing candidates to use excerpts of the recording of the Forum rather than using it in its entirety, are in accordance with national and state League of Women Voters policies and procedures. Please be assured that all candidates who participate in our Forums are required to abide by the same policies and procedures.”

Susan Salcido, incumbent Superintendent of Schools and Lozano’s opponent, did sign the Release Forum and agreed to the League’s Forum rules.

OMETIMES A FINELY CRAFTED CONCERT PROGRAM fits the listener’s ears like a tailor-made suit fits the body; a sweet synchrony of taste, temperament, and sound styling that engages the mind in cozy, form-fitting comfort from one piece to the next.

That is exactly what happened at the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Granada Theatre concert on May 5th with guest artist, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, and conductor Nir Kabaretti at the helm.

Conducting from memory, Kabaretti opened the program with five movements from Guiraud’s two orchestral suites from Bizet’s opera, Carmen: Prélude and Aragonaise, Intermezzo, Séguedille, Les Dragons d”Alcala, and Les Toréadors. Both conductor and orchestra found an immediate comfort zone of performance affability and technical expertise together, highlighted by elegant individual solo moments, solid brass and wind choirs, lush high string ensemble playing, and a kind of collective consciousness about this glorious music they’ve all Vionlinist Anne Akiko Meyers played a hundred times and in various settings, that redefined the old saw, familiarity breeds contempt. In this case, familiarity bred consonance and sublime ensemble beauty. A dynamic performance.

It was a special treat to have composer Arturo Márquez in the audience, and as soloist, the artist for whom the concerto was composed, Anne Akiko Meyers. Neither disappointed. The first movement, Folia Tropical, introduced the violin in a low and sultry register - dramatic!

Later, Márquez’ talent as tunesmith, augmented by the composer’s rich Mexican/Cuban/ Latino heritage, released its own delicious tropical intoxicants of Latin rhythm and melody.

The second movement, Plegaria (Chacona) is indeed a prayer, perhaps of gentle seduction.

Márquez’ orchestration skills, his timely use of brass in this stunningly beautiful movement, was inspiring. The last movement, Fandanguito, opens with a solo fiddle candenza, then slips comfortably into a Tango/Mariachi infused lush-out of contagiously coy esprit and wink/ nod playfulness. Great fun for audience, soloist, and orchestra alike. The full house roared its approval.

The centerpiece of the evening, Arturo Márquez’ Fandango for Violin and Orchestra, has become in less than a year since its birth, a new staple for the violin concerto repertoire. In traditional three movement format, Fandango is immediately accessible to players and listeners alike, because Márquez is a master of melody and rich orchestration. The concerto is also sufficiently challenging for the soloist, to maintain its stature in the repertoire over time. In short, it’s a beauty.

The concert’s theme, Fandango Picante! celebrated the Santa Barbara premiere of Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’ Fandango for Violin and Orchestra, which Meyers debuted last August at the Hollywood Bowl with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Also on the program, Márquez’ Danzón No. 2 (1994) and two of the oddest bedfellows ever to don toreador pants, the Russian Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, his Capriccio Espagnol, Opus 34 (1887) and the Frenchman Georges Bizet, a suite from his opera Carmen (1875) compiled posthumously by his friend, Ernest Guiraud. The odd bit: neither Bizet nor Rimsky ever set foot there, yet these two works have become eponyms in public consciousness throughout the world for everything Spanish.

Ditto, Rimsky-Korsakov’s iconic Capriccio Espagnol, Opus 34, clearly also a familiar repertory favorite of the musicians. Turning in a characterful performance pumped with feisty élan and daring do, the orchestra regaled the audience with a powerhouse of a performance.

Kabaretti beamed with pleasure as he soothed each of several famous, and famously difficult solo cadenzas from principals, and engaged in spirited tempo fights with the orchestra, particularly during the last breathtaking bars of the Fandango asturiano that nearly spiraled the orchestra off the stage - an E ticket!

NION BANK HAS BECOME THE LARGEST SUPPORTER of United Way’s Young Leaders Society in Santa Barbara County this year by donating $10,000 to the group. A longtime supporter of United Way programs, the donation was made as part of the bank’s Community Recovery Program.

United Way formed the Young Leaders Society 13 years ago to encourage young SB County professionals to become more involved in their community and strengthen leadership and business skills for their careers. In supporting future generations of professionals by centering on philanthropy and career development, the program aligns with Union Bank’s Community Recovery Program’s focus.

Titled Carpinteria Valley Radio, the station’s programming will feature a discussion of Carpinteria-related issues weekday mornings from 7am to 9am, followed by coverage of local news and traffic updates and music. There will also be shows about wine, gardening, ocean preservation, cannabis, and more.

“Carpinteria is evolving into an exciting new phase in its history, and it occurred to me that the people who live there could use more information,” said Dennis Mitchell, Carpinteria Valley Radio founder. “They have access to South Coast news outlets, and now this service will provide timely traffic information and other updates 24/7 specific to Carpinteria.”

NatureTrack Welcomes Abby Pickens ABBY PICKENS has joined NatureTrack as the new Program Manager for the nonprofit’s “Fostering a Lifelong Fascination with Nature” outdoor field trip program. Right Whales

A

HIGHLY ENDANGERED AND MAJESTIC SPECIES, right whale sightings are an incredibly rare experience. Weighing up to 100 tons at 45 to 64 feet long, right whales are recognizable for their sturdy frame and the rough areas of skin around their face. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there may be less than 500 North Pacific right whales in the wild. Right whales have been designated as an endangered species for over 50 years, with current threats against them including climate change, being hit by boats, and getting tangled in fishing nets and gear.

Santa Barbara Channel whale watchers, however, occasionally spot right whales swimming through regional waters.

A right whale spotted off of the Channel Islands The species’ migration habits remain uncertain, yet they seem to mostly reside off the coast of Southern California in the winter months. Ultimately, their presence points to the significance of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s support for designating a whale heritage site in the Santa Barbara Channel.

N RARE COLLABORATIVE CONVERGENCES OF ORGANIZATIONS AND GENRES, the elemental goodness of jazz pianist Marcus Roberts and his trio appears for double-duty in town next week. On Wednesday, the blind pianist – whose break-out op came through work with Wynton Marsalis in the ‘90s – appears in an expected context, in the jazz-inviting environs of the Lobero Theatre. That gig came about in connection with the Santa Barbara Symphony, with whom Roberts and trio will perform in its Riffing on Gershwin program at the Granada Theatre, May 21st and 22nd.

That Gershwin-anchored program features not the typical Rhapsody in Blue, but the Roberts-arranged Piano Concerto in F, as well as the 1933-vintage Symphony No. 1 by Florence Price, considered the first African-American woman symphonic composer.

Among Roberts’ previous performances of note locally was a sublime evening of solo jazz piano sets at Campbell Hall in 2004, in tandem with the virtuoso Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. If Rubalcaba’s set impressed in a deeper, more technically advanced and sophisticated way, Roberts’ set was steeped in gospel-ish warmth and unpretentious affability of expression. Comparisons to Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal (who has memorably played the Lobero in years past) make sense in terms of Roberts’ joyous and lyrical approach to jazz piano.

Joining Roberts in the trio is another Marsalis, drummer Jason, and bassist Rodney Jordan. At the Granada – in SBS’s season finale – Roberts will be joined by scores of “long-hair” musicians, with

Growing Up In Public:

One interesting mini-trend in Santa Barbara’s wobbly-butdetermined 2021-22 concert seasons has been the teaming up of cello and piano, specifically out at Campbell Hall. Within a month, UCSB Arts & Lectures programmed the local debut of internationally-celebrated siblings Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason and last week’s cello-piano pairing of cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

As expected, both evenings presented a lofty order of musicality, and both found their highlights with Shostakovich’s powerful Sonata in D minor for Cello and Piano. Can we call this a theme song for the season?

Last week’s concert opened in romantic mode, with Schumann and Brahms, saving the best for later. The French-blooded duo owned the cultural real estate of Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano – lyrical and spacious, but ending in a kinetic whirl – and the Shostakovich as fitting finale. Hearing/seeing New Zealander sensation Lorde at the Santa Barbara Bowl last Saturday triggered compare-contrast experiences for those who caught her 2014 Bowl show, at the ultra-precocious age of 17. Circa 2022, the 25-year-old Lorde is busy carving out a new, more mature persona, as heard on last year’s album Solar Power.

Saturday’s show, the final stop on her North American tour, managed to be both polished and calculatedly raw. A vast, rotatable set, sporting a geometric balancing act of a large sphere and a blade-like ladder apparatus, was put to good use alongside a sophisticated light and staging plot, plus a band dressed in utilitarian uniforms, ala Devo or Polyphonic Spree.

Electro-pop is the vague description of the Lorde sound, but she relies on the primitive power of her flexible voice and crafty lyrics, as heard on old hits Ribs, Royals, and Liability, and new treats California and Solar Power. Lorde’s reign continues, on new turf.

Choral Sounds Of May:

Happily, May’s music calendar is alive with the sound of choral music, by two torchkeepers of the Santa Barbara choral scene. On May 28th and 29th, the esteemed a cappella group Quire of Voyces, boldly led through its Renaissance-to-Modern repertoire turf by director Nathan, returns to the old worldly haunt of St. Anthony’s Chapel.

This weekend, Santa Barbara’s Choral Society makes its way to another church-ofchoral-choice, the First Presbyterian. Long-standing director JoAnne Wasserman leads the 74-years-deep choral group in program dubbed “pas + amare/peace + love,” on the themes of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.

Both groups were last heard from, concert-wise, around the choral-friendly period of Christmas. Unfortunately, that was also during a time when omicron kept potential audience members away in homely hordes. Consider this springtime flowering an unleashing of pentup desires and liberating screen-weary music fans. There are few more ancient live music pleasures than voices lifted up in song, and the feeling can be exponentially greater in the choral realm.

Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

WELVE $1,250 SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO STANDOUT SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE STUDENTS by the Rotary Club of Montecito and its supporting foundation in partnership with the SBCC Foundation. All scholarship recipients are students who are currently pursuing study in a career technical education program.

DAVID WASCO AND SANDY REYNOLDS-WASCO are a husband and wife team who have worked together as a Production Designer and Set Decorator, respectively, on more than 25 films over the past 35 years. They have collaborated with some of the most talented filmmakers today, including Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Michael Mann and most recently, Sandy Reynolds-Wasco Damien Chazelle and Aaron Sorkin.

Scott DeVine Joins Ensemble Theatre Company SCOTT DEVINE is Ensemble Theatre Company’ new managing director following a national search. DeVine holds close to 20 years of theatre management experience, most recently with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, where he worked as the organization’s general manager and CFO. SBPD Observes National Bicycle Safety Month

O SUPPORT THE SAFETY OF LOCAL CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS, the Santa Barbara Police Department is conducting a May traffic safety operation centered on dangerous driving practices, including failing to yield to bicyclists or pedestrians, speeding, illegal turns, and running stop signs and red lights.

SBPD encourages all drivers to look for cyclists and pedestrians before turning or opening a car door by streets or bike paths, as well as maintain a minimum of three feet of space when passing a cyclist. Cyclists are encouraged to wear helmets, use lights when traveling at night, yield to pedestrians, and travel in the same direction of traffic.

Why Call A Recession Now?

WE ARE AT A CLASSIC TOP OF THE BUSINESS CYCLE when the demand for products is sky high and all the factors that restrict supply are causing red hot inflation numbers.

The Federal Reserve then must per its mandate to balance employment with price stability step in to restrict credit by raising short-term interest rates, among other measures.

The National Bureau of Economic (NBER) is the actual arbiter of recessions, and it says: “The determination of the months of peaks and troughs is based on a range of monthly measures of aggregate real economic activity published by the federal statistical agencies.”

Currently, most of the indicators, including employment, consumer spending, and industrial production, don’t indicate much of an impending slowdown.

Under Chairman Greenspan, the Fed raised its rates 16 times over two years, after holding rates below the inflation rate for too long in early 2000 in part causing the housing bubble while allowing the negative interest ‘liar’ mortgages that brought down Lehman Brothers and caused the Great Recession.

What the pundits who predict such things seem not to keep in mind is there are many parts that make a recession, which take a lot of time to happen (see wide spacing between gray bars that indicate recessions in NBER employment graph). For instance, there was no recession between 1983 to 1991, and a record ten-year expansion from 1991 to 2001.

What happens next will determine how high the Fed pushes interest rates to ‘tame’ the inflation tiger, and whether it causes another recession.

Tomorrow: Songs For a Brighter Future

“Music is our common denominator,” said SBGMC’s Artistic Director Nicole Lamartine. “Every human being on the planet has some sort of music within their culture, and it is a place where everyone can be accepted for what they bring to the music. And in Santa Barbara, that place that we’re creating is very special because we can then share our community with the greater community, and we can help bring awareness that...music brings people together. And I think that’s something we need more now than ever.”

Despite its name, SBGMC welcomes all singers, regardless of gender or whether they are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally. Individuals are welcome as long as they can sing tenor, bass, or baritone, and are comfortable with the group’s title — no audition required.

The chorus was founded shortly after Lamartine assumed her position as the Sorensen Director of Choral Music at UC Santa Barbara in 2020. A student shared with Lamartine that he formerly sang in a gay men’s chorus named Fratelli which no longer met.

Determined to fill this gap in the local singing scene, Lamartine met with several of the chorus’ former singers and board members to launch the Santa Barbara Gay Men’s Chorus, which presented its first concert in December 2021.

Today, the chorus includes 27 singers, including individuals from across Santa Barbara, Camarillo, and even Port Hueneme. The group aims to not only provide local members of the LBTQIA+ community a shared, creative outlet, but cultivate a sense of larger community through singing.

“My time in the Santa Barbara Gay Men’s Chorus has been a wonderful investment,” said chorus member Andrew Rawls. “From the superb musicality of our artistic director to the bonds formed among my fellow chorus members, it’s so refreshing to have a queer space to share with like-minded musicians.”

The spring concert, Tomorrow: Songs For a Brighter Future, aims to spark hope for the future while emphasizing the necessity of ongoing activism.

In preparing for the concert, Lamartine asked singers to write notes to the next generation of LGBTQIA+ people. These comments will be shared with concert attendees, including messages drawing upon themes of unity, hope, justice, equity, and love.

To highlight that music is for all, the concert’s program features a multicultural and international selection of pieces. Songs range from traditional, glee club-styled tunes to Estonian and Haitian pieces, as well as Stephen Sondheim’s Our Time from the musical Merrily We Roll Along. The chorus will also sing Glory, from the film Selma, and the Ukrainian national anthem and a folk song to display solidarity with Ukrainian people everywhere.

Eclectic Expressions — Celebrating Diversity Through Art

EHIND EVERY PAINTBRUSH TOILS A UNIQUELY INSPIRED ARTIST, driven to express themselves through creativity. The colorful array of soulful portraits, intimate examinations of nature and the body, and bright abstract canvases presented in the Arts Fund’s newest show, Eclectic Expressions, celebrate this very idea. On display through June 12th, the gallery highlights the diversity and perspectives that make up Santa Barbara County, showcasing 28 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Color) and LGBTQ+ artists.

“A big thing for me in curating the show was the whole notion that a lot of times when it comes to representing marginalized communities, whether that’s LGBTQ or folks of color, their work is only put to the forefront if it specifically shows them by phenotype,” explained exhibition curator Too Zen. “I wanted to put to the forefront the lens in which we also see the world, interact with the world, how we express ourselves...”

Eclectic Expressions Artists:

A UC Santa Barbara alumna, Too Zen joins The Arts Fund via their guest curator program, which invites community members to submit original exhibition proposals. In curating Eclectic Expressions, Too Zen called for Santa Barbara BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists to submit greatly expressive works featuring bright to more somber tones.

The result is a diverse exhibition of close to 50 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and even a projected video. Multiple pieces directly address race and gender, including several powerful portraits of Black women as well as Emiliano Zapata and members of the EZLN. Realistic female nudes invite reflection upon the beauty of the body, while abstract forms invite viewers to view humanness in a new light.

Many other works are not so obviously connected to these themes.

Colorful splatter paintings and intricately hand-drawn patterned canvases occupy one corner, while prints of rattlesnakes and skulls evoke desert themes. Paintings of a silhouetted kiss, reaching hands, and a flower with eyes are hung across from a projected video showing a psychedelic animation featuring the Grateful Dead teddy bears and rap music.

Despite this wide range in subject matter and form, the gallery unifies all works together in the understanding that this is how these artists view and wish to share their understandings of the world and themselves.

“Art’s about everything, not just our background — even though that plays a role into our expressive lens, I feel like there’s a lot more to marginalized communities than that,” shared Too Zen. “Like those deep emotions, the different ways in which we see the world... I just want to portray that through the different eclectic expressions in here.”

All of the displayed works are available for purchase, with 70 percent of each piece’s sale price going directly to the artist, ten percent to the guest curator, and twenty percent supporting the The Arts Fund’s guest curator program and gallery.

A Stage For The Whole Community

Renovation of the Band Shell will revitalize Plaza del Mar for music, drama, dance, and celebratory events. As a public park, the City provides low-cost access for non-profit organizations that serve a broad cross-section of the community.

The PARC Foundation The Parks and Recreation Community (PARC) Foundation is partnered with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to achieve Band Shell renovation.

All the funding needed to complete the project is $45,000.

A Parks and Recreation Department and Parc Foundation Project Established as a City park in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and outdoor gatherings. The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band.

1st Place the closing ceremonies, Girod and crew walked away with the well deserved First Place Trophy. They celebrated their win in a great big way at the Closing Ceremony and the party that followed. The 2022 Les Voiles de St. Barth may be in the history books … but my bragging in behalf of this Santa Barbara sailing team is not!

ICTURE YOURSELVES on the Island of St. Barth, a location surrounded by everything you could wish for... sun, warm winds, sandy beaches, dining on French foods and wines overlooking spectacular ocean views in “the Monaco of the Caribbean Islands.” Not only that, it’s also the location of one of the world’s most exciting and challenging international yacht races, Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille. Santa Barbara’s resident and sailor extraordinaire, Bernard Girod and his team flew to the island of St. Barth to represent Santa Barbara in the competition! Now, last but not least, prepare yourselves for some shameless bragging – my very favorite thing to do!

Windy days, the bluest of blue waters, energetic sailing, and the challenges of ocean currents very different from those along the West Coast drew Girod and crew to Les Voiles on April 17th to the 23rd. Girod, the owner of the Farr 400 (40 foot) yacht Rock & Roll moored in the Santa Barbara harbor, made good on his promise after participating in the 2019 Les Voiles race to return to the ‘next race’ – which, as fate and the Coronavirus would have it, was not to be until 2022!

Victorious in the phenomenal off-shore racing yacht Pata Negra, a chartered Lombard IRC 46 designed in France, the Santa Barbara based crew excelled in every sailing condition possible with winds in the 20’s and considerable seas. Girod and his team simply rocked the world famous Les Voiles regatta with a 6-0 record never relinquishing its first place grip on the CSA 5’s six race series. Finally, standing tall at

Her Flowers Cast in Bronze and Carved in Marble ISITING THE GETTY CENTER FOR A RARE RETROSPECTIVE OF PHOTOGRAPHER, Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976), I learned that I knew very little about this amazing artist whose career spanned more than seven decades. Of course, I knew her iconic black and white photos of flowers, but this exhibition allowed me to see that she was also prolific as a portrait and street photographer.

And to be completely honest, until I read the museum press release, I always thought that the name Imogen was the name for a man not a woman. Stupid me.

Now, staring at her black and white photos of Calla Lilies and Amaryllis, I started to see them not as fragile, beautiful flowers but as timeless sculptures cast in bronze and carved in marble. This makes me fanaticize about seeing these photos next to the Greek and Roman antiquities from the Getty Villa.

Through decades of her career, Cunningham created hundreds of portraits of famous and lesser-known people. Take a look at the portrait of aging Gertrude Stein next to the portrait of a young, twenty-something male friend of Cunningham. Both of them, hold our attention and tell their personal stories. This is definitely a tempting moment to paraphrase Gertrude Stein’s famous quote into, “There is Plenty of There There.”

As a street photographer, Cunningham continued to explore the nooks and crannies of city-life with her “stolen pictures” where she hid herself and her camera from view. Take a look at her self-portrait as a ninetyyear-old Granny that dissolves in the mirror through the glass storefront. What makes this photograph perfect for me is her refusal to go for perfection but instead emphasizing life as it is.

Now my friends, are you in the mood for an adventurous and safe trip to Paris with all its glamour and charm? In that case, let’s go to LACMA to see the exhibition, City of Cinema: Paris 1850-1907, which brings together paintings, sculpture, posters, prints along with photography and film. This exhibition allows us, with the help of Claude Monet, to arrive to Paris in a steaming locomotive. Michael Govan, LACMA Director, says the exhibition “considers the early history of film in the larger context of cultural and art history.” Numerous film projections are placed throughout the exhibition culminating in a salle de cinema (movie theater) with a film program not to be missed.

Previously on view at the Musée d’Orsay, the exhibition, City of Cinema: Paris 1850-1907, runs here in the City of Angels through July 10th.
