The free, virtual conversation will take place Tuesday, May 18th at 8:30pm.

VOICE: This is the Dalai Lama’s fifth visit to UCSB, what does it mean for your students to have exposure to the Dalai Lama in the context of this very challenging time, and how has this relationship impacted your program?

Cabezón: The move from in-person to remote classes has been a challenge for students, just as it’s been for professors. There have been few opportunities to meet outside of formal classes. The Dalai Lama’s virtual “visit” to UCSB gives us a chance to listen to one of the world’s great thinkers on issues that are of importance to all of us, but also come together as a learning community for a special event outside of formal classes.

VOICE: It seems that culture is increasingly materialistic and secular, yet people also seem to be yearning for experiences that offer meaning and hope. How does Tibetan culture and Buddhism respond to those trends and needs?

Cabezón: Certain aspects of Buddhism, like mindfulness meditation or compassion training, have been adapted and “secularized” for Western audiences and have been integrated into our culture as therapeutic techniques in fields as diverse as counseling psychology and corporate management.

Some Buddhists find this problematic because in its secular version, a Buddhist practice like mindfulness is stripped of its Buddhist religious context, which Buddhists consider important. The Dalai Lama, however, has taken a very pragmatic view: if it works for you, then feel free to draw on Buddhism as you see fit, and whatever doesn’t work for you, feel free to leave behind. I find that kind of refreshing.

VOICE: What is the Dalai Lama’s unique contribution?

Cabezón: I think that it’s his unrelenting insistence that our minds and mental makeup are not a given--that they can be transformed, that we can become better people by cultivating “a warm heart” and a sense of empathy and compassion for others, especially for those in need.

ISTORIC PARADE CARRIAGES FORMING A PICTURESQUE BACKDROP, La Presidenta Stephanie Petlow, this week, revealed a full slate of Fiesta events for this year, sans parade and mercados, and announced the Fiesta 2021 theme, “Honoring our Generations.”

“This is a great moment for Fiesta as Patricia Orena Named Saint Barbara we continue to move out of the recent restrictions,” said La Presidenta Petlow. “For months, and even a full year, so many have worked so hard and in a creative way, to bring as much Fiesta to our community this year as possible."

Fiesta Pequena, Noches de Ronda, Arts and Crafts Show, Rodeo, and a handful of traditional parties will all be part of Fiesta 2021, with all planning following current health guidelines and protocols.

While attendance and event size will be smaller to assure community safety, Fiesta is returning.

In announcing the Fiesta 2021 theme, “Honoring our Generations,” Petlow shared: “We are all where we are because of those who came before us and the paths they paved. It is our duty to make sure we pave positive paths for future generations. This year we celebrate all of the generations in our family, not just our own families, but the Santa Barbara families that have contributed to the beautiful foundation of the Fiesta spirit and continue to carry it on.”

In walking through the list of Fiesta events confirmed for 2021, La Primera Vice Presidente Maria Cabrera looked to the future in her comments to the attendees. “When the City and County of Santa Barbara give us the go ahead, Old Spanish Days Fiesta is poised and ready to bring our historic parade up State Street again and to return the popular Mercados to both Plaza De La Guerra and Mackenzie Park,” said Cabrera. “The historic parade is such an important part of our Patricia Orena has been named St. community. Montecito Bank & Trust Tops $2 Billion in Assets

R

EPORTING A 30.78 PERCENT INCREASE DURING THE PAST YEAR, Montecito Bank & Trust’s total assets grew $493.38 million, during the 12-month period ending March 31st, closing at $2.09 billion.

“As our communities continued to navigate COVID-19 throughout the first quarter, our teams remained dedicated to helping ensure the safety of our branches and offices, and to securing as much Paycheck Protection Program funding as possible for Central Coast organizations during the Small Business Administration program’s latest round,” commented Janet Garufis, Chairman and CEO of Montecito Bank &Trust.

There was loan growth of 26.93 percent year-over-year, ending the first quarter at $1.37 billion. Deposit growth saw a 37.16 percent lift year-over-year, with quarter-end deposits totaling $1.88 billion. Total net income for the first quarter, year-over-year, increased 34.01 percent to $3.82 million. The bank’s total risk-based capital remains very strong at 14.70 percent, exceeding the ten percent regulatory minimum required to be considered well-capitalized.

“As a PPP financial partner of choice, our teams facilitated an additional 1,700 new PPP loans in the first quarter, providing over $115 million of critical support to businesses and organizations across the Central Coast. This volume was a primary driver of our year over year loan growth, coupled with heightened activity in our residential lending group. Looking ahead, as vaccination rates increase and our economy begins to reopen more fully, I am optimistic about what the next chapter holds for our communities and am confident in our team’s ability to continue providing the world-class customer experience our communities have long trusted us to deliver,” continued Garufis.

Montecito Rotary Club to Host Back 2 School Fundraiser

S SUMMER APPROACHES AND LOCAL STUDENTS BEGIN PLANNING FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, the Rotary Club of Montecito has announced that it will virtually host its annual “Back 2 School” fundraiser to support Santa Barbara City College student scholarships. Held at 4pm Wednesday, May 19th, the event will be chaired by Tony Morris, Club Director of Vocational Service, and Cathy Cash, past Club President.

“I was introduced to Rotary when I was in 7th grade, when I attended my first club meeting in my hometown,” said Morris.

“I was always impressed with the goodwill the club brought to my community. Today, I feel the same way about my adopted hometown’s Rotary Club as well. Together, we’ll continue to do good Cathy Cash work - and treasure friendships along the way.”

Beyond the Rotary Club of Montecito, Morris serves as the Director of Community Outreach & Development for the Rona Barrett Foundation, an organization that provides wellness and housing services for low-income seniors. Cash is also a dedicated community member, having worked with local organizations such as the The Women’s Fund and United Way. The Back 2 School Fundraiser will further feature special entertainment and a silent auction, with items including eight tickets to the Santa Barbara Film Festival 2022, four adult passes to Tony Morris the Santa Barbara Zoo, gift cards to local restaurants, and more.

Environmental Defense Center Welcomes New Team Members www.environmentaldefensecenter.org RACHEL KONDOR has joined the Environmental Defense Center as a staff attorney. Previously, Kondor served as a District Representative for Congresswoman Lois Capps, as well as a senior legislative assistant for environmental and tribal matters to Congressman Raúl Grijalva. Beyond this work, she has given back by serving on a number of nonprofit boards, including the Sky Island Alliance, Natural Allies, and the California Wilderness Coalition. Kondor is an University of Arizona alumna and earned her J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School with a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law. Rachel Kondor

PETER JONES has also joined the Environmental Defense Center staff as a legal fellow. In this role, his primary focus is ensuring the enforcement of state and federal clean water laws for onshore oil and gas operations. Having earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Alfred University and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he was awarded a Catalyst Public Service Fellowship after graduation. In the past, he has worked as a Summer Law Associate at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, Division of Law.

SB Residents to Partake in Worldwide Rally for Freedom

HIS SATURDAY, a group of Santa Barbara residents will partake in the Worldwide Rally for Freedom, a series of protests that will take place in cities across the country and world against COVID-19 restriction measures. The event will begin at 12pm on Saturday, May 15th, meeting at Stearns Wharf next to the canoes before marching up State Street.

The event announcement states that it will be a peaceful gathering, and will feature presenters, an information booth, and music.

Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara Awards $750,000 to Local Nonprofits

T

HANKS TO A RECORD-BREAKING POOL OF MEMBER DONATIONS, the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara has distributed $750,000 in grant funding among ten local nonprofit agencies. From supporting mental health and medical services to addressing education and food insecurity, these grants will make a difference for the communities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria. The grant recipients were announced during the organization’s May 5th Annual Women’s Fund Celebration of Grants virtual event.

“These new grants bring the total amount awarded to local organizations to more than $8.6 million since the Women’s Fund was founded in 2004,” read a WFSB statement.

Much of the awarded funding went to supporting local children and education. Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM) received a $75,000 grant to support the continuation of school-based mental health services for educators, families, and students. Additionally, the Carpinteria Children’s Project was presented $90,000 to continue operations of the Carpinteria preschool, which serves low income working families. The United Boys & Girls Clubs of SB County were also awarded $70,000 so that low-income students can receive scholarships for educational summer camp.

Children & Family Resource Services received $100,000 to offer support and training for volunteer Promotores to become certified Family Health Navigators, while Casa Pacifica was awarded $80,000 for an additional SAFTY mobile crisis counselor who will respond to youth experiencing mental health emergencies. Moreover, $100,000 went to the Children’s Resource & Referral of Santa Barbara County to expand its child care capacity by supporting more women to become licensed child care providers. The Cecilia Fund also received $50,000 to expand its coverage of dental and medical costs for patients without the means to pay.

WFSB further supported local efforts to aid individuals experiencing homelessness. Doctors Without Walls - Santa Barbara Street Medicine received $60,000 for its daytime outreach specialist to provide mental health and medical services to community members facing homelesness. $75,000 went to New Beginnings Counseling Center to expand its Safe Parking program, which offers protected spaces and support for individuals living in their cars. Foothills Forever Campaign Gaining Momentum

F

OOTHILLS FOREVER, the campaign to purchase the West Mesa of the San Marcos Foothills, has announced that they have met all interim milestones and are in the home stretch to finish the campaign on June 1st. Foothills Forever has been joined in their efforts by a national conservation organization, the Allemall Foundation.

“We are delighted to have been joined by the Allemall Foundation in our efforts to obtain the property,” stated Peter Schuyler, Co-Chair of the fundraising campaign. The Allemall Foundation recently helped the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy complete the purchase of the Mill Bend Conservation Project in Mendocino County.

“The moment that we learned of the community efforts to save this important grassland open space, we knew we wanted to help,” said Ed Scott, Executive Director of the Allemall Foundation. “We can’t do it alone, but we can help the Santa Barbara community with additional resources, to help meet your incredibly tight timeline.”

Supervisor Gregg Hart praised the efforts of Allemall Foundation, noting, “this gives us an increased opportunity to meet the challenge for local residents to save this precious land.”

“Saving the San Marcos Foothills continues our community’s legacy of permanently saving threatened open space lands for the community’s use,” explained said Marc Chytilo, an attorney for the campaign. “The Douglas Family Preserve, Carpinteria Bluffs, Sperling Preserve at Ellwood, and many of the open spaces important to our community, all faced these fundraising challenges.”

So far, many local individuals and groups are involved.

“We now need angel donors to step up, as well as the wider community to continue to support the campaign. Over 3,500 individuals, businesses, and foundations have contributed more than $7.6 million in cash and pledges to date, plus a short-term loan from Montecito Bank & Trust, to meet the terms of the purchase agreement. An additional $12.4 million is needed before the June 1st deadline, to secure the legacy,” Schuyler exlaborated.

“Our task as we navigate this last and largest fundraising goal to buy and protect the San Marcos Foothills West Mesa is to remember that every one of us can benefit from this land as public open space, and every donation large and small helps us achieve that goal,” said Marianne Parra, a member of the campaign leadership team.

“It is important that we protect the land in perpetuity for every one of us, toddler to elder, winged, two legs, four legs, eight legs and those who slither,” Parra added. “These 101 acres feel like 20,000, with wide expansive views and incredible beauty for all to enjoy.”

Campaign volunteers are providing docent-led tours from 10 to 11:30am every Saturday and Sunday through the month of May. Tours may also be scheduled through www.FoothillsForever.org.

Barbara Ben-Horin and Luz Reyes-Martin Honored at Women of Achievement Awards

T A TIME WHEN LOCAL ADVOCACY AND COMMUNICATION ARE MORE VITAL THAN EVER, Barbara Ben-Horin and Luz Reyes-Martin have continued serving the Santa Barbara community with determination and passion. On April 30th, their inspiring careers and positive impacts were honored during the Association for Women in Communications Santa Barbara chapter’s 13th Women of Achievement Awards, themed “Vision, Voice, and Advocacy for a New Generation.”

“The theme for our event was chosen almost two years ago when the word ‘pandemic’ was not on the forefront of most people’s minds,” commented Lisa Osborn, AWC-SB President. “If anything, these ideas — vision, voice, and advocacy — have become more powerful in the past year. Both of our honorees exemplify all of these qualities.”

Founded in 2008, the Santa Barbara chapter is the only AWC chapter in the state of California. Its Women of Achievement Awards event has been an annual opportunity to recognize local women who make a difference in our community through their communication skills. Past honorees have included Community Environmental Council CEO Sigrid Wright, U.S. Representative Lois Capps, and author and columnist Starshine Roshell, who acted as this year’s emcee.

AWC-SB founder Dr. Lois Phillips Honoree Luz Reyes-Martin introduced honoree Barbara Ben-Horin, speaking to her decades-long efforts to support education, youth, and families. The former CEO of Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara, Ben-Horin recently faced the task of garnering financial support while ensuring the organization continued serving the community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ultimately, Girls Inc. acted as a remote learning center for students, provided some in-person programs, was a Showers of Blessings location, and aided with food delivery to individuals in need.

“In Santa Barbara, we are fortunate to live in a city that understands it takes a village to raise a child, and that it takes all of us to have a healthy community,” shared Ben-Horin.

Prior to Girls Inc., Ben-Horin worked nationally with the Anti-Defamation League as well as held the local positions of Executive Director of Domestic Violence Solutions, Santa Barbara City College Foundation CEO, and the Santa Barbara Art Museum’s Director of Development. “Advocacy requires you to use your vision and voice, it requires that you be active, not passive, that you challenge assumptions, that you support, influence, and you intervene to bring about change,” said Ben-Horin.

Deputy Chancellor of California Community Colleges Dr. Daisy Gonzales then introduced honoree Luz Reyes-Martin, praising her compassion and dedication while working with higher education, public affairs, and community development. Originally from Los Angeles, Reyes-Martin is the Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Santa Barbara City College. She is also the first Latina President of the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, as well as the first Latina individual elected to the Goleta Union School District School Board.

In her acceptance speech, Reyes-Martin acknowledged these roles, commenting that while she may be the first Latina to hold these positions, she will not be the last.

“That is work that I’m increasingly motivated by, supporting and uplifting a younger generation of women that I am regularly inspired by and who teach me how to be a stronger voice and advocate,” she expressed.

Beyond this work, Reyes-Martin further gives back by serving on the boards of Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM). She has also sat on the Board of the Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund as well as the Executive Committee for the Santa Barbara Sierra Club.

“This is the message that I share for all the women who are with us today, of every age and background — there are more firsts to topple down, more fights to continue, and together we will,” said Reyes-Martin.

The event closed with an invitation for attendees to join AWC-SB and participate in future events. Currently, the organization is hosting a membership drive through May 21st that will waive application fees for new executive, professional, and entrepreneur members. www.awcsb.org

S SANTA BARBARA COUNTY CONTINUES TO REOPEN, many of our community members are still facing food insecurity amidst the pandemic. To support these individuals, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is inviting locals to donate nonperishable food items, cookware, and small kitchen appliances during its Fill the Foodbank!

Drive-Thru Food & Cookware Drive.

Held on Saturday, May 22nd from 10am to 2pm, the drive will be collecting donations at two locations across the county — 4554 Hollister Ave. in Santa Barbara, and 1303 S. Bradley Rd. in Santa Maria.

“Fill the Foodbank! and other food drive events are integral to the Foodbank’s mission to bring the community from hunger into health,” said Jordan Jenkins, Community Engagement Coordinator for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.

“The food and cookware donated at Fill the Foodbank will go directly back into the homes of our community members in need. At the Foodbank we believe no one should go hungry and all should have access to nourishing food and the tools to prepare it.”

Jenkins added that the Foodbank distributed over 18 million pounds of food over the course of last year, which was almost twice the amount the organization usually distributes in a single year. Additionally, the Foodbank packed 140,000 disaster food boxes to distribute among individuals in need and made more than 60,000 home

deliveries to individuals with severe medical conditions and seniors. Given this increased need for local food support, people are encouraged to donate whatever they can to the Fill the Foodbank! event.

“Whether you can donate a single can or a bag of food, any little bit helps!” said Jenkins.

This month’s event is being held in place of the organization’s traditional Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which entailed mail carriers providing residents with bags to donate food items. However, given pandemic safety guidelines, this year the Foodbank is inviting community members to participate in this drive-thru event instead. Individuals will remain in their cars upon arriving at their chosen location, while Foodbank volunteers wearing safety equipment will unload donations from the vehicle.

The drive will accept donations of nonperishable food items, along with clean, new or gently-used cookware and small appliances other than microwaves.

Community members are especially encouraged to donate the Foodbank’s most needed food items, including nut butters, beans, canned protein, whole grains and cereals, canned tomatoes and fruit, pasta, and Ensure nutritional shakes.

Regarding cookware and appliances, donations of crock pots, pressure cookers, electric kettles, can openers, hot plates, pots, saute pans, and rice cookers are most appreciated.

ORKING TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE LIFE BETTER and more fun getting around Santa Barbara on foot or on a bike.

Clearly, safe circulation is the basis for all modes of transport and efficient travel. How can we blend all the modes and safety levels for pedestrian, bike, and automobile into our downtown and neighborhood areas in a logical functional way and in Santa Barbara style?

I bike downtown and beyond frequently via the Micheltorena Street Bridge to Bath or Castillo for going north and south. To head east and west, I use the cross street closest to my destination. I rarely use Sola Street and have never used Cota. I use Figueroa, Anapamu, or Ortega and other streets depending on where the grades are and what neighborhood I feel like cruising. A slow bike speed enables me to observe buildings, homes, gardens, and details that are beautiful to view while in transit. I like getting somewhere while enjoying the ride through the old city neighborhoods at a pace to match.

I am afraid we seem to have forgotten this aspect of the ride and gone a bit too far with our enthusiasm for more biking (yay!) and the bicycle master plan as a set route built for speed. No problem! This simply means that it is a good time to step back to see what is working and what adjustments could make improvements and bring balance.

The cross-town neighborhood streets are generally easy and low key enough for sharing of the street between the cars and bikes - given a good attitude by both. I believe that the Cota Street section is not working as hoped for and feels too much like an expressway. In my opinion the bikeway feels less safe, detracts from the street overall, and has negatively impacted places like the treasured Arnoldi’s Restaurant. I suggest returning the street to the former configuration.

Circulation in the Central Business District (CBD) includes the State Street Promenade.

The area will be under study before long by the City’s State Street Masterplan Committee whose members will soon be chosen. The committee will discuss and resolve how the community wants State Street and the downtown developed especially regarding circulation elements and components in the outdoor public areas.

Meanwhile, we continue the “Interim Period” and the emergency conditions set by the City to help businesses during the Covid Pandemic. State Street remains closed to cars and open as a shared promenade for outdoor dining, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other wheeled devices. Although well intended, the new green bike lanes now adjacent to former bike lanes and other signage are confusing and leave little space for pedestrians in some places.

Green lanes are intended for zones where bicycles and automobiles come together. The highly visible bright green lane is intended to separate cyclist from the auto as seen in the photo example. The green lane is not intended for areas shared by pedestrians and bicycles and are not recommended for opposing directions to be directly adjacent to each other as now seen on State Street. Painting out the green lanes and replacing with a simple new graphic and speed limit rules could go a long way to clarifying the shared use and a cleaner look for our downtown.

Standard bikes and pedestrians can coexist, remembering that deference is always to the more vulnerable pedestrian.

The speed limit should always be as slow as the slowest person in your vicinity – with a maximum speed limit of an easy jog (4 to 6 mph).

Watch out for, take care of, and enjoy one another! It is fun to let the other person go first! Slow down and enjoy the ride through the quaint neighborhoods and stop for a fruit stand along the way!

Volunteer with Butterflies Alive!

RE YOU SEARCHING FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES THIS SUMMER? Do you love butterflies and teaching others? The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is currently recruiting volunteers for its “Butterflies Alive!” summer exhibition. The exhibition will run from May 28th through September 6th, with volunteers committing to at least one three hour shift per week.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older, with individuals who are bilingual in Spanish and English especially encouraged to apply. The museum is also searching for volunteers of varying ages and backgrounds in order to serve its diverse range of visitors.

Volunteers will undergo training to learn about butterfly species and their significance for our environment. Throughout the summer, they will speak with and guide guests through the “Butterflies Alive!” garden, which will be filled with almost a thousand butterflies.

SB Botanic Garden Awarded Re-Accreditation

N A TESTAMENT TO ITS OVERALL EXCELLENCE AND HIGH STANDARDS, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has been re-accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Having first been accredited in 1996, AAM accreditation is the highest national recognition a museum can receive. In being re-accredited, the SB Botanic Garden continues among the ranks of the mere three percent of botanic gardens that are accredited as living museums nationwide.

“This reaccreditation certifies the Garden as a leader within our field, maintaining the highest standards of collections management, research, and educational programs,” said Dr. Steve Windhager, the Garden’s Executive Director. “Our reaccreditation is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff and board.”

Reaccreditation reviews take place at least every ten years, and is an involved process. First, a museum must undergo a year of self-study, followed by a site visit from a team of peer reviewers. Then, AAM’s Accreditation Commission, which is made up of museum professionals, reviews the self-study and visit report before declaring whether or not a museum is reaccredited.

Established 95 years ago, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is the first botanic garden that focused solely on California native plants.

HE BIG 2021 MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND is now in the history books! Celebrants flooded the harbor, Stearns Wharf, and the beaches. The art walk was doing a rather brisk business, as were the restaurants on the other side of Cabrillo Boulevard.

In a word, with the lines awaiting tables, the sidewalks seemed way too narrow for all the foot traffic along the waterfront.

Although huddled in my puffy jacket, the weather was gloomy (May Gray on steroids is how I viewed it) – none of the weekend’s celebrants seemed even slightly daunted by the cloud cover.

As I wandered in the direction of the launch ramp, I watched the Condor Express making its way out of the harbor with a boat load of whale watchers, its brand new lighter, faster, and environmentally friendly engines humming on its way out to sea. As most of you know, the Santa Barbara Channel is home to more than 30 species of whales, dolphins, seals, sea otters, sea birds, and sea lions that come and go throughout the year. Santa Barbara offers the best whale watching locations in Southern California: blue, gray, humpback, and orca (killer whales) sightings are frequent in the waters of the Santa Barbara channel.

December through April is the height of the annual gray whale migration and some of the Coronavirus restrictions were lifted just in time for 80 enthusiastic whale watchers to enjoy an afternoon of Mother’s Day action.

The warmer waters between the months of May to November feature blue and finback whales, along with huge pods of dolphins ready to play with mariners and provide video ops for the sea going enthusiast. The Condor Express offers a scenic observation deck perfect for photography and cozy indoor seating – now also open to passengers thanks to relaxed restrictions – along with a well stocked galley for drinks and snacks.

“We want to give our guests every opportunity to have the best view and most enjoyable ride possible in the greatest comfort. A little libation and some yummy snacks help too!” chuckled Hiroko Benko, owner of the Condor Express. “Although the Condor Express normally hosts 149, being allowed to increase the number of guests to 80 now that Santa Barbara County is in the Orange Zone, has made the outings much more fun for both passengers and crew.”

The Mother’s Day cruises, despite the gray skies, turned out to be spectacular! Closely watched species for the day included 16 humpback whales and 4,500 long-beaked common dolphins.

A few hundred dolphins interacted with the whales, but later the Condor Express encountered a massive mega-pod that stretched for miles and contained around 3,000 dolphins. Whales’ aerial action in the form of spinning and breaching, needless to say, was a sight to behold. As a special treat for Mother’s Day, a whale mom and her calf put on a show. I’m told this was quite a day for the lucky guests aboard Santa Barbara’s iconic whale watcher.

“You never know what Mother Nature has in store, which is why I’m so proud and happy to provide this service to our guests and be a part of the Condor Express and its crew,” stated Benko. “This continues to be the most amazing experience!”

Attached are market snapshots for the end of April 2021 and April 2020, as reported through the Santa Barbara Multiple Listing Service. The comparison year-over-year is far from ideal, however, because the real estate market was virtually stalled a year ago. (Going forward, we will need to apply an asterisk to the data for late spring/early summer 2020.) In the charts you can see where the number of pending sales for the month of April 2020 was understandably one third that of April 2021.

Goleta The rise and fall of the median price over the Condos years is one of the most Totals commonly used bellwethers of the real estate market.

We show here how although this statistic is generally a good indication of the health of the market and buyer confidence, it does not tell the whole story. What is the median price? It is defined as the midpoint in a grouping of sales, meaning half the sales in the group sold for more and half sold for less. The average price is usually avoided as it will be skewed when there is a strong uptick in high-end closings as we are seeing in today’s market.

Please be seated … statistically, the median price for April 2021 shows an increase of 49 percent from one year ago. You will notice that this is not the headline of the article, because, due to several factors, this is actually misleading and is not reflective of the general market. As noted above, the median price is artificially pulled up significantly when there is a surge in high-end closings. To illustrate, there were 51 closings in Montecito reported through the Multiple Listing Service in the first four months of 2021, priced over $5,000,000 – a 400+ percent increase in the number of sales over the same period a year ago, for that same price range. Let’s look closely at other neighborhoods.

It is certainly not news to buyers seeking a home for under a million dollars, that this particular market segment is extremely competitive with properties selling immediately with multiple offers. You will note that Goleta’s median price is certainly up from a year ago, but not unrealistically so, in that there are few high-end

properties in that geographic area.

lending guidelines that have been at play for the past ten years.

The median price for the general Santa Barbara area shows an increase of 38 percent over last year. Santa Barbara does have a significant percentage of higher-end homes in such neighborhoods as the Riviera, Upper East, and ocean view areas of the Mesa. Many sales of those types of properties helped to fuel that statistical increase.

If not the median... where are prices today?

For a very general rule of thumb, overlooking the anomalies in the stats for April 2020, due to the COVID lockdown, and the surge of the highend in the past nine months, one might look at a solid 20+ percent increase in value of homes as compared to a year ago. Comparing this to a steady six to seven percent increase that we had been seeing prior to the pandemic.

How sustainable is that increase?

The short answer is that it is not sustainable… we view annual increases of five to six percent as sustainable.

We do not, however, anticipate a market crash in the short to midterm. (Certainly a future plateauing of prices could be anticipated). There are too many supporting factors for South Coast real estate values today.

These include an augmented level of buyer desire to live in our community, which shows no signs of abating; a minimal risk of future distressed sales due to sellers having equity in their properties, coupled with very strict

Market-wide condos have shown an increase of 14 percent in median price year-over-year. This market segment provides entry level pricing for many first time buyers, however, we have seen a strong number of highend condos in such communities as Bonnymede and Montecito Shores in Montecito.

Today’s mortgage rates are as low as three percent. These historic rates continue to allow buyers to secure lowcost money for years to come and close on their dream home, even in today’s appreciated market. As an illustration, at today’s rates, a one million dollar loan would cost approximately $4,600 per month; should interest rates increase by only one percent, that payment would jump to $5,200. More staggering is that at the higher interest rate, the borrower would pay over $200,000 more in interest over the life of the loan. (The information above is for illustration purposes only. Your actual rate, payment, and costs could be higher. Get an official Loan Estimate before choosing a loan.)

Big Jobs Disappointment?

OT EVERYONE IS EAGER TO GO BACK TO WORK, according to last Friday morning’s unemployment report (May 7, 2021). The U.S. economy added just 266,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs in April. Leisure and hospitality led the way with 331,000 jobs and governments added 48,000 new jobs.

“Both the unemployment rate, at 6.1 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 9.8 million, were little changed in April,” said the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“These measures are down considerably from their recent highs in April 2020 but remain well above their levels prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (3.5 percent and 5.7 million, respectively, in February 2020).”

Transportation/warehousing and Professional/business sectors had 153,000 fewer jobs that would be normal for this time of year, since the jobs numbers are adjusted for seasonal factors. There was a pause in hiring in those sectors probably because they couldn’t find enough workers, since there has been no slowdown in business activity in both the manufacturing and service sectors of the economy.

This is in part because the government’s various aid programs are enabling more women to stay at home until their children go back to the slowly opening schools, and many of the eight million that were laid off are still receiving good unemployment benefits.

The good news is that the size of the labor force grew by

430,000 in April to 161 million, close to the 164.5 million working before the pandemic when the unemployment rate was 3.6 percent.

“The shortfall in new jobs in April is likely just temporary,” said MarketWatch’s Jeffry Bartash in his comments on the disappointing nonfarm payroll report. “Falling coronavirus cases and massive federal stimulus have turbocharged the economy and job openings have surged. The U.S. is still set up for a summer of strong economic growth, especially if the coronavirus is mostly squelched.”

Employment by local governments also rose 31,000 in April as more schools reopened. Some very essential workers neglected until now—bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and other personnel had been unable to work with schools closed, while employment declined in retail, health care, transportation, and manufacturing.

Reuters’ ICAP says, “The deceleration in payroll growth this month is not an argument for easier monetary policy. As Chair Powell keeps reminding everyone, virus-related constraints are the key variable in the outlook. For much of the past year, the major effect of those constraints was to restrict demand. Given the large number of employers who say they cannot find enough new workers, it is clear that the deceleration in hiring in April was not due to insufficient demand.”

This is only the beginning of what will be a decade-long recovery, with much of it to come from the just-passed American Recovery Act, and upcoming American Jobs Plan, a requested total of more than $4 trillion in additional government spending that will create even more good jobs.

The real question with all this stimulus spending is what will full employment look like in the years to come? Will there continue to be a labor shortage, for instance, with the current declining U.S. birth rate and lower immigration numbers?

It must be one reason the financial markets are boosting

PERA SANTA BARBARA CELEBRATED BOTH THEIR MAESTRO AND THE PERFORMING ARTS during a birthday benefit dinner fittingly called Everything Greek! on Saturday, honoring Athens born Artistic and General Director Kostis Protopapas. Guests arriving at the University Club of Santa Barbara posed in front of a Greek flag while gold laurel wreaths covered blue and white decorated tables alongside photos of Protopapas from childhood to recent sailing trips.

The Greek band Synthesi performed traditional Greek folk music while guests dined on a Mediterranean themed menu.

So far, 45 individuals have been commemorated from a list of 324 assassinated Iraqi academics. Some estimates put the number of victims at over 700.

“Beau unites people,” said Damluji, an associate professor Beau Beausoleil in the Department of Film and Media Studies. “His projects shed light on the catastrophic destruction of Iraq’s cultural institutions and the lives of Iraqis. Yet he does so in a manner that is fundamentally creative. His projects have created communities and cultivated connections and culled the craft of artists, poets, bookmakers, photographers and thinkers from around the world who share a commitment to celebrate the best of humanity while recognizing the violence of militarism, occupation and colonialism.”

“Shadow and Light” came to the seaside campus because Hughes, a Middle Eastern studies librarian at the UCSB Library, was paying attention. In 2019 Beausoleil sent emails about the Heather Hughes exhibition to roughly a dozen university librarians. Only Hughes responded.

“I was fortunate that Beau reached out to me about this wonderful project,” she said, “and Mona’s enthusiasm for the project was really valuable in getting library support. Alex Regan, UCSB’s events & exhibitions librarian, was also really supportive in bringing the exhibition to UCSB.” Since the exhibition is online, it establishes a teaching resource for university classrooms, Damluji said.

“I hope that faculty and graduate students will include the exhibit in their courses and I look forward to the opportunity to work with others to develop pedagogies for engaging the exhibit,” she emphasized.

And because the exhibition will be available everywhere, Damluji and Hughes hope its message spreads beyond the campus.

“Originally, I was thinking about how involved the United States has been in the Middle East and in Iraq, yet how little the impact of that invasion and on exhibit conflict has been felt by most Americans,” Hughes said. “I hoped this exhibit could bridge some of that distance for attendees. By bringing into focus the APRIL 30 - JUNE 21, 2021 lives and deaths of these Iraqi academics, maybe we could challenge the configuration of Iraqis and Middle Easterners as ‘ungrievable lives.’ I’m still hoping that the UCSB community is able to engage with this material, but again as the exhibit is now available beyond Santa Barbara and the United States, I hope the international aspects of this project could inspire more solidarity between people.”
