N AN UPLIFTING, UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, the Santa Barbara community and those beyond will be able to gather at home, tune in, and remember soldiers who died in the service of our country, all while maintaining social distancing measures thanks to KEYT-TV, the local ABC affiliate.

This year, as in years past, Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation (PCVF) will present the 2020 Memorial Day community event. KEYT-TV will then air it at 4pm on Monday, May 25th. What’s special about this year’s program is that residents in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties have an opportunity to gather together remotely to view a televised broadcast in the safety and comfort of their own homes.

PCVF felt that it was important to find a way to continue the Memorial Day event to honor those who have died serving our country and to demonstrate America’s resilience by prevailing over the adversity caused by COVID-19 – an invisible enemy, according to PCVF Co-Founder Lt. John Blankenship (USN former), who noted, “with the support of the KEYT production team, our organization found a way to transition our once live programming to a televised and digital format.

In fact, now more people can join together, but safely apart, to remember those in uniform who have passed before us.”

The Foundation added, “As the war against COVID-19 is waged, causing us to make major changes to our way of life, it is important to continue time honored traditions that give us purpose, along with a sense of normalcy. While we’ve temporarily given up certain freedoms in order to protect our health and that of others, we mustn’t forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives during times our country was engaged in war on foreign soil.”

The line-up slated for the PCVF Memorial Day broadcast includes a traditional bagpipe processional taking place at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.

PCVF Board Chairman Col. Philip J. Conran (USAF, ret.) will give the opening statement. Conran is a 30 year veteran with a highly decorated career, having been awarded the Air Force Cross – the highest award the Air Force can give. Prior to that, he received a Purple Heart, the Airman’s Medal, four Distinguished Flying Crosses for actions in Vietnam, and the Legion of Merit medal.

Lt. Col. Patricia Rumpza (USAF, ret.) will lead the Pledge of Allegiance; David Gonzales will lend his beautiful voice to sing the National Anthem; LTC Jack Armstrong, U.S. Army (ret.) will deliver the invocation; which will be followed by a choir singing Shenandoah.

Anthony J. Mastalir, Commander, 30th Space Wing and Western Launch and Test Range, Vandenberg Air Force Base will be the main speaker. The program also includes words from Brig. General Fred Lopez, who has served more than 30 years of active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and Reserve and was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service medal.

N UNA OPORTUNIDAD ÚNICA Y ESTIMULANTE DURANTE LA PANDEMIA DE COVID-19, la comunidad de Santa Bárbara y los demás podrán reunirse en casa, sintonizar y recordar a los soldados que murieron en el servicio de nuestro país, todo mientras mantienen medidas de distanciamiento social gracias a KEYT-TV, el afiliado local de ABC. Este año, como en años anteriores, la Fundación de Veteranos Pierre Claeyssens (PCVF, por sus siglas en inglés) presentará el evento comunitario Día Conmemorativo 2020. KEYT-TV lo transmitirá a las 4pm el lunes, 25 de mayo. Lo especial del programa de este año es que los residentes de los condados de Santa Bárbara y Ventura tendrán la oportunidad de reunirse de forma remota para ver una transmisión televisada en la seguridad y comodidad de sus propios hogares.

Bucket Brigade Launches 3D Printer Project

HAT STARTED AS TAKING THE TIME TO FIX A 3D PRINTER, Marco Farrell turned into an amazing community project with the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade.

The Bucket Brigade, which has been a boon to the community following the twin disasters in Montecito, has several initiatives in the works to assist with the COVID-19 health crisis and one of them is creating 3D printed personal protection equipment including face shields and ear savers.

“We have over 2,500 face shields assembled and they have just wrapped up their quarantine. To minimize the risk, we sanitize, then assemble and box them. At that point we wait three days so that any potential risk of CV living on anything is as low as possible. The County has given us direction on how to prioritize distribution, which will start in earnest on Monday,” commented Marco Farrell, who began this project at home. The program now has 38 people at work.

“We have several makers with multiple 3D printers pumping out lots of visors,” continued Farrell. "Another coming on board this week has written a special program to kick off the finished prints and restart without someone having to be there and do it! We will soon be able to 3D print several hundred pieces per day and that will grow quickly as everyone ramps up to speed.”

Besides the 3D project, the Bucket Brigade has a face mask sewing program involving more than

280 people who have made nearly 10,000 cloth face masks.

So far, hundreds of shields and thousands of masks have been distributed. They have gone to the Santa Barbara County Fire Dept., the Montecito Fire Dept., the Santa Barbara County Jail, Vons, Trader Joes, and other essential businesses. Some of the PPE has been distributed to dentist offices and medical offices from Sheriff Jaun Camarena and Marco Farrell Casa Dorinda to Sansum, as well as other smaller clinics and places of work.

All these masks, shields, and other PPE are given away to first responders, medical and essential workers, and others in need for free. The Bucket Brigade is funded through donations from the public and volunteers.

NCE AGAIN THE FOG ROLLED IN bringing in a subdued atmosphere along with it to the waterfront.

Beaches were almost empty and very few people wandered about – most wearing protective masks!

What a change a few days can make… It must be that the weather is as uncertain as the rest of us.

Crazy, huh?

A stroll down to visit my friend Hiroko Benko owner of the Condor Express – Santa Barbara’s famed whale watching and party boat – seemed to push the veil of fog back to reveal a clear blue sky. Although her business is located on the water (as opposed to State Street), she shares all the concerns and challenges many small and large businesses are facing in Santa Barbara and throughout the country. During this curious time of COVID-19 quarantines and social distancing, how does one keep ‘afloat’ and plan for the future? Such uncertain times...

Fortunately, Hiroko was willing to share how she is managing and what she hopes to plan once a word from the governor’s office allows the Condor Express to be open for business once again.

“The boat has been confined to its slip, unable to host passengers, since the beginning of March,” Benko explained. She laughingly added that when the crew takes it out of the harbor to maintain the engines, dolphins and whales can be seen everywhere in the Channel... but only seen by the small crew, not the 127 happy passengers that normally hang over the sides with their cell phone cameras to capture these awesome sights.

“My loyal crew of twelve are still with me and are still on the payroll taking care of things aboard as we wait – and hope – to be back in business soon,” Benko shared. “I don’t know what I’d do Hiroko Benko – masked and unmasked! without them!”

An interesting element to add to the story is that by the year 2022, the State of California is requiring a mandated engine upgrade for environmental purposes to be installed in boats the size of the Condor Express.

Although the present engines are in perfect condition, four new engines had to be ordered to meet for 2022 standards.

“Regardless of the COVID-19 virus, I am glad that I pursued the whole process for installation of the new engines and am grateful that the State has helped us in funding the process,” Benko emphasized emphatically envisioning the future of the boat and the environment on both land and sea.

“Things will change after we are allowed to return to business, there’s no question about that,” Benko admitted.

“There will be a new normal for everyone and I’m taking this quiet time to develop how this will look for us.”

Previously the Condor Express could accommodate 127 passengers, but with the six feet social distancing mandate and for everyone’s safety, only 30 passengers with masks, or about 25 percent of the normal load can

be allowed on board. “Most of our activities are normally on deck and we plan to keep the passengers outside, avoiding the interior spaces as much as is possible,” she added. “Any food will be prepared onboard by our own crew … of course, with masks and gloves.”

Sanitation throughout the boat will be a top priority and fortunately, with so few passengers, the crew can take care of that continually throughout the entire voyage.

Also included in Benko’s plans will be the popular performance cruises she usually schedules for the summer months. In July it will be the exciting Broadway Cruise, followed by the Hawaiian Cruise in August. The final summer cruise (my favorite!) will be the Opera Cruise as the season draws to a close. “I’m hoping for the best,” she mused, “and I know, like so many others in town, that this difficult period will pass.” In the meantime, she’s made special masks by hand for her entire crew, herself, and some of her friends. And one for me too! I don’t know about you, but I’m planning to be one of the first to reserve a seat on the Condor Express for that Opera Cruise wearing my extra special Benko designed mask!

Developing Good Habits to Stay Healthy in Isolation Can Last A Lifetime

HELTERING IN PLACE CAN BE ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT if you are marooned away from home, but there are ways you can take care of yourself that strengthen your mental health to help you avoid feelings of isolation, anxiety, and boredom. Sometimes it is the simple things that keep us grounded.

Reach out: Research shows that it can be stressful to be separated from loved ones. Even wearing a facemask can contribute to feelings of social isolation. Everyone needs social contact, so finding ways to connect with others is essential. To avoid feelings of isolation use social media. Text, call, email, or use video platforms to reach out to friends and family often. Reconnect with people you haven’t been in touch with recently. You don’t need a reason to make the call. Caring is enough. Offer emotional support to others. Volunteer to help a neighbor, or for a group that delivers groceries, or does errands for immune-compromised people.

Take care of your body: Does your community mandate prohibit going outside? If not, take advantage of fresh air and the restorative properties that nature offers by taking a brisk walk.

Just 30 minutes, done regularly, can make a big difference. Exercise is an evidencebased way to release stress, increase relaxation, and enhance your mood. If you are housebound, there are plenty of ways you can keep moving and ensure that indoor exercise is a part of your daily routine. Put on your favorite music and dance. Mix

it up. With the help of videos you don’t need a personal trainer to get up and move.

There is a huge variety of exercise videos on YouTube for every fitness level. Exercise has a positive impact on sleep as well as mood. Sleep is beneficial during stressful times and aids in keeping your mind and body healthy. Try to eat healthy, wellbalanced meals and avoid alcohol and drugs.

Take care of your mental health: Psychological distress is common both during and following a period of quarantine.

However, you can take steps to protect your mental health and well-being. While it is important to have information from reliable sources, take breaks from the news, and take your mind off personal worries by listing some things you would like to accomplish.

Take time to unwind. Read your favorite poem. Spend time cultivating positive emotions, like love and gratitude. Gratitude can help reduce anxiety and depression.

Once a day, make a mental list of the things for which you are grateful. Find new projects to work on that can give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Learn something new. Research shows that the birth of new neurons in the adult brain helps rein in the activity of stress-responsive cells. This, in turn, reduces stress-induced anxiety.

While the quarantine may be temporary, the coping skills you use during this period of isolation are the same ones that will be useful after the pandemic passes.

Summer Camps: Nature Adventures at Home

As the stay at home order and social distancing continue, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has decided to transform their Nature Adventures summer camps into a fun, engaging at-home version.

They will be running these five-day camps from June 22nd to July 10th for ages four to nine, and if popular, they plan to continue them throughout the summer. There are three camps to choose from each week and they will be a combination of Zoom sessions with trained counselors and activities that can be done at home with some supervision.

INNESOTA FED GOVERNOR NEEL KASHKARI believes the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t have to bring on another Great Depression. But it will take some 18 months to recover, and only if Americans are able to cooperate in protecting themselves and each other.

“We need to find ways of getting the people who are healthy, who are at lower risk, back to work and then providing the assistance to those who are most at risk, who are going to need to be quarantined or isolated for the foreseeable future,” Kashkari said in a recent CBS Sunday interview.

“This could be a long, hard road that we have ahead of us until we get to either an effective therapy or a vaccine. It’s hard for me to see a V-shaped recovery under that scenario.”

The letter that best describes how long the depression will last can be a ‘V’, ‘U’, or ‘L’ shape, after the release of the April unemployment report that showed 20.2 million nonfarm payroll jobs lost and a rise of the unemployment rate from 3.5 percent to 14.7 percent in just one month.

Most economists say there will be at least two quarters of negative GDP growth, which means a very steep drop and sudden recovery—the ‘V’ shape. But some economists like Nouriel Roubini, the NY University economist, see a much worse scenario.

He raises the possibility of “mass defaults and bankruptcies.

Together with soaring levels of public debt, this all but ensures a more anemic recovery than the one that followed the Great Recession a decade ago.”

Why wouldn’t he believe this, as New York has suffered the most because of its dependence on crowded subways to move its millions of workers and proximity to Europe that probably brought COVID-19 to its shores.

That’s why New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been

exorting New Yorkers of late to behave as if, “It’s not about you or me, it’s about we,” to bring down their infection rate.

Job losses were heaviest at restaurants, retailers, and hotels, but every major industry suffered, said the Labor Department. The health-care sector even lost 1.4 million jobs amidst the worst health crisis in American history.

This is the highest rate and the largest over-themonth increase in the history of the series (seasonally adjusted data are available back to January 1948), said the BLS. The number of unemployed persons rose by 15.9 million to 23.1 million in April. The sharp increases in these measures reflect the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and efforts to contain it.

The real question is what Nobel Laureate Robert Shiller predicts will be the resultant anxiety pandemic.

“It is not good news when two pandemics are at work simultaneously. One can feed the other.

HELTERING IN PLACE HAS SHED NEW LIGHT on how we experience our homes. Functionality and comfort come to the forefront, as well as the ease to keep clean, find privacy, and to utilize spaces which might have been previously overlooked.

Little annoyances which have been put off for years will become things that must be fixed now. Changes in the home which make us feel more at peace are paramount, Staci Caplan as more than ever our homes are our sanctuary in uncertain times.

As our homes function as offices, classrooms, conference rooms, and gyms, we realize how important the organization of our space is in promoting productivity. Open-concept great rooms continue to be desirable with the addition of smaller spaces within them for privacy and community at the same time, along with more defined and multiple workspaces or offices. We will likely see bigger pantries, and the return of the mudroom as a disinfecting room, to shed shoes and street clothes. A sink in the mudroom for hand washing before entering the main house could double as a spa station for furry family members.

Desirable design elements which optimize natural daylight are more important to our well-being than ever, through windows, skylights, or sunrooms. Window boxes and places for urban farming, as well as access to livable outdoor spaces, are especially important.

Materials that are non-porous, easy to clean, and reduce the likelihood of infection are the top choice. As supply chains are interrupted and we reconsider the safety and cost effectiveness of sourcing materials from non-domestic locations, we will have to be more thoughtful with our choices. Local and regional products are more sustainable and support our local economy.

We want homes that are easier and less expensive to run long term. For decades green homes with optimal energy efficiency have been important to consumers, and now more than ever are the gold (green) standard, as we are spending so much time in our homes and really evaluating their efficiency and comfort.

In many ways, sheltering in place is a return to simple living. Post-pandemic, we will have a greater appreciation of our homes. Most importantly, we will think more about what is essential to the experience of how we want to live.

ESTMONT’S ANNUAL JURIED ART EXHIBITION, forced to go virtual during the pandemic, features 48 works by Tri-County artists and will be available for online viewing through June 20th at www.westmont.edu/time-memory. Christopher Miles, professor at the School of Art at CSU Long Beach, juried the show, Time and Memory, which received 221 entries from 95 artists in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties.

“Obviously, it’s different this year, because we don’t get to come together and celebrate these The Light Between by Sharon Schock artists, but it has been so encouraging to see the support and interest in the exhibition,” shared Judy Larson, R. Anthony Askew professor of art history and museum director. “I think this platform will allow more people to view the exhibition since they don’t have to physically be in Santa Barbara. It’s exciting to offer that to all the artists.”

This year’s featured artists include last year’s first-place winner, Brendan Murdock, as well as Westmont Professor Emeritus Tony Askew, Joan RosenbergDent, alumna Sharon Schock ’06, and Westmont Art Council members Rosemarie Gebhart, Kimberly Hahn, Holli Harmon, Ruth Ellen Hoag, Marcia Rickard, Kerrie Smith, Nancy Rossi, and Don Zimmerman.

“I’m excited and impressed with the diversity of medium and style of the chosen artists,” Larson noted.

“Though we’re saddened the museum is temporarily closed, we’re pleased to find a way to continue the event and bring our community together.”

Miles, who began teaching art at CSU Long Beach in 1998, is a Los Angeles-based artist who grew up in Southern California surrounded by a family ceramics business. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara and earned an MFA at USC’s School of Fine Arts (now the Roski School), August Afternoon by Tony Askew where he worked in ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture.

His work has been exhibited at ACME gallery, Actual Size gallery, Cuesta College, the Pasadena Museum of California Art, L.A. Louver Gallery, Mount St. Mary’s College, the Pacific Design Center, and the Torrance Art Museum. His work has been reviewed in ARTLURKER, Artillery, Artweek, Art in America, the L.A. Weekly, The Los Angeles Times, Notes on Looking, and Sculpture Magazine.

Nearly all of the pieces in the show are for sale, with 30 percent benefiting the museum.

The show is sponsored by Alan Griffin of Raymond James, the Upham Hotel, Marcia Rickard, Don Logan, Peter Morris, and Pete and Becky Adams.

The Westmont RidleyTree Museum of Art remains temporarily closed due to COVID-19. The annual senior show, which celebrates the work of Westmont’s graduating art majors, was postponed last month due to the coronavirus.

From Distracted to Inspired

N THE SPACES BETWEEN, while we live through various shelter at home and social/physical distancing orders, the need for distraction has intensified. Sometimes another episode of Newsroom isn’t enough to dull the roar of cabin fever. At least two local galleries, themselves in the midst of adjusting to new pandemic rules, have stepped up and come to our rescue with “Private Viewings.”

I noticed the first mention of these opportunities for diversion in a Sullivan Goss bulletin on May 4th. “Starting today and through the month of May, Sullivan Goss will open two new exhibitions for one-hour appointments from 9am - 5pm by either Amazon, 2020 by Angela Perko single individuals or cohabiting families,” it read. [Yes!] The gallery’s new exhitions are colorful and interesting... Angela Perko: Just Another Pretty Picture and U.C.S.B. M.F.A. 20/20. The gallery is continuing Phoebe Brunner: A Wild Delight, which has been up since January.

Very shortly after, GraySpace Gallery sent out a notice that they, too, are offering private viewings, by appointment, to see their current exhibition, Between Ornament & Meaning, with work by Charlene Broudy, Michael Blaha, and Lisa Crane, which the gallery recently extended until June.

Soon my imagination got the best of me as I wondered what it would be like to have a gallery all to myself... Would they mind if I just came to look and experience it?

A quick call to the galleries confirmed they are open by appointment and happy to provide anyone in a mask who also has a love for art an appointment.

First stop was Sullivan Goss. Owner Nathan Vonk had the door open and his mask on. He Asimetria, c. 2019 by Elisa Ortega commented of the personal gallery hours, “It’s Montilla good for moral. It’s just nice to have people in and to talk with adults. So we are happy to have them. And, there have been a few sales. That’s really great.”

The three exhibitions in the gallery are definetely distinct. Of U.C.S.B. M.F.A. 20/20, Vonk related, “This show is really important to me, because these are artists that have some sort of roots in Santa Barbara; but, more often than not, end up leaving or stay here and are very successful somewhere else.... Doing shows like this is me, slowly trying to rock that boat.... All this stuff is made in Santa Barbara. It’s really, really good art.”

When we moved into the room with Angela Perko’s work, he noted, the title was a bit ironic.

“These are not just pretty pictures. There is a Fashion King by Charlene Broudy lot of symbollic content in here.” Pointing to Amazon, he explained, “This is a painting about the destruction of the Amazon rainforrest.

These are all Amazonian plants and animals. They are chock full of all of these meanings.”

Ruth Ellen Hoag at GraySpace left the gate unlocked for me. She was in the back in a studio space about to paint a wall. GraySpace Gallery has divided their wall space between photos by Charlene Broudy and paintings by Michael Blaha, with 3-D ceramic work by Lisa Crane on pedestals intermixed. Hoag explained the idea behind the exhibition is what she sees these distinct artists having in common - quirkiness. “This is such a fun, quirky show,” she shared looking from one artist’s work to the next. Turning to one of Crane’s pieces, she asked, “How could anyone ever possibly think of that?”

Turning to a piece by Blaha, she commented, “His work is so quirky... between Charlene’s quirky photographs, and Lisa’s quirky sculptures, and Mike Blaha, you have a really fun show.”

It’s a new dawn and the intimacy of communing with art is returning.

UC Santa Barbara scholar’s book takes a fresh look at how we approach the ocean in art, literature, and technology

HEN GOOGLE MAPPED PARTS OF THE OCEAN for its Underwater Earth, it used the same technology, essentially, it employed for its Street View application.

Melody Jue finds this odd.

An assistant professor of English at UC Santa Barbara, her research focuses on the ocean and environmental humanities, particularly in how it’s portrayed in the media. Underwater Earth and its drive-by view of the sea, Jue said, betrays what she calls a Melody Jue “terrestrial bias” — the idea that the ocean can be represented in the same ways a land environment is.

Jue explores this and more in Wild Blue Media: Thinking Through Seawater (Duke University Press, 2020), a thoughtful and deeply researched dive into the ways humans approach the ocean in film, art, literature and technology.

“One aim of the book,” she said, “is really to ask, How have we created media and representations of the ocean? How has that reflected terrestrial bias and what can we do? What can we do differently?” To answer these questions, Wild Blue Media discusses a wide variety of media, including science fiction literature, underwater memoirs, documentary film, data visualizations and underwater artwork.

In one chapter of the book, Jue, a diver, examines two aquatic museums: Jason deCaires Taylor’s Museo Subacuático del Arte (Underwater Museum) off Cancun, Mexico, and Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) in a cenote, or underwater cavern, in Yucatán.

Taylor’s museum consists of a number of human figures arrayed in 30 feet of water. The sculptures grow and change over time as life forms such as coral eggs, carried by seawater, attach themselves and transform the human forms into something “somewhat uncanny, with eyes closed and no evidence of breathing — perhaps asleep, resting, or even ghostly,” as Jue writes.

The museum, she said, questions how interpretation takes place differently underwater. In a terrestrial museum, the objects are fixed and no one expects them to change over time.

Taylor’s figures, though, experience a kind of metamorphosis that challenges the viewer in three dimensions.

“So instead of a museum that’s about preservation, you have a museum that’s about change,” Jue said. “And as a visitor when you try to navigate it, I found that it was actually really difficult to hover, to stay put because of the current

ANTA BARBARA’S COUNTY COURTHOUSE may someday reclaim its stature as an enticing and iconic attraction for bridal parties and tourists, but as a workplace for lawyers – not so much.

George Eskin, retired trial attorney and Superior Court Judge turned legal reformer, says that the coronavirus shutdown of the courthouse, and the switchover of its “normal operations” to internet and virtual platforms, provides a glimpse of the future for how the legal system will operate in a post-COVID world.

“We’re never going to return to the normal that we’ve experienced over the past 50 years,” Eskin said in a Newsmakers interview. “Everything is going to change.”

Eskin was appointed to the Santa Barbara County bench in 2003 by former Gov. Gray Davis, after previously working in senior positions for the L.A. City Attorney and in the Ventura and SB D.A.’s offices, as well as practicing criminal law as a private attorney.

Married to state Senator Hannah Beth Jackson, he retired in 2013 and since has written and advocated on behalf of criminal justice reforms involving bail, incarceration, and sentencing policies and Judge George Eskin, issues.

Retired The judge told us that the pandemic shutdown is forcing, “a reexamination of just what the courts are,” noting that under current conditions “the court’s still there, motions are still being heard, judges are still resolving issues. It’s just that it’s being conducted in a different way.”

“They provide a service, a judicial service, for determination and resolution of disputes,” he added, “but our traditional concept has been of a building that is the courthouse.”

Eskin cited the remarks of another jurist, “who observed that for years and years, attorneys get dressed, get into their cars, drive down to the courthouse, find a place to park, check in with the clerk, stand in line, sit in the audience waiting for their case to be called, waste an enormous amount of time.

“And the future may be that they’re going to be working from home or from their office and through a computer screen, electronically,” he suggested. “How many of the functions that a court performs can be performed over the internet, can be performed electronically and how many of them require personal presence in court?”

Among a host of observations on a range of subjects about the justice system, the retired judge offered his perspective about: Jury trials. Eskin noted that jury trials represent the one area where a courthouse may remain necessary as a spatial site: “The only thing that requires the courthouse is jury trials.

That’s the only function that a court provides that I have serious questions about - how jury trials are going to be conducted in the future...The whole practice of law and the way litigation is conducted will be changed tremendously and attorneys are going to have to learn new techniques, new approaches to obtaining information from witnesses, and conducting cross examination and direct examination.”

Bail. Because of the coronavirus, an emergency “zero bail” order is in effect throughout California’s court system, directing the release of most of those arrested for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies and, the judge said, highlighting the inequities and irrationalities of the bail system: “The legal community, the justice community, is going to be looking at, why are people being confined pending an adjudication of their charges?...We have to ask ourselves, is a person being detained in custody because they can’t afford to buy their way out? Or is it because they represent some kind of public risk?...The policy considerations basically have to do with the fact that poor people stay in jail and rich people get out and they may be charged with the same offense. That’s certainly a denial of due process.”

Recidivism and reentry. “The important point for everyone to recognize is that everyone who is in custody, other than those who are in custody on capital charges or life without possibility of parole, everybody else is going to be released from custody – today or tomorrow or next week or next month or next year – they’re going to be released...And during the period of time that people are incarcerated, something positive should occur, so that when they reenter society, when they walk out of the jail, when they walk out of the prison, they’re in a different place than when they committed the crime that caused them to be prosecuted and convicted and incarcerated in the first place.”

“It’s not just a question of coddling criminals or being soft on crime,” Eskin added. “It’s a question of getting to the root causes of the crime. Can we deal with those in the hope that we’re going to effect people’s conduct in the future? Locking them up and doing nothing does very little other than making them more sophisticated criminals.”

N SUPPORT OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020, the Dos Pueblos High School Foundation is crafting a tile mural to celebrate the seniors’ resilience during a disappointing senior year. The mural will capture the iconic moment at the end of the graduation ceremony when each graduate tosses their cap into the air.

Each of the 466 seniors is being given one 6”x6” tile for the approximately 250 square foot mural to design in the way they would decorate their mortarboard for the graduation ceremony.

The words “We are Resilient” and “MMXX” (Roman Numerals for 2020) will also be part of the design.

“With our seniors losing so many rite-of-passage celebrations, we have been working hard to come up with ways to show that their school community cares,” shared Principal Bill Woodard. “The tile mural is a wonderful way to create a lasting tribute to our graduates.

On behalf of the class of 2020 and the entire DP community, we are so very grateful to the DPHS Foundation for spearheading this project.”

The mural will be placed on an outside wall at the school and will include a dedication plaque to the Class of 2020, with the goal of completion by the end of summer for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before students head off to college.

“If gubernatorial orders prevent bringing the students together for a celebration in July or August, we will wait until Winter Break so students who are going away for college can participate. This is their moment, so we will wait as long as we need to,” stated Rechelle Ringer, DPHS Foundation board member and parent of a 2020 graduate. “What they have accomplished, during a very trying time, is remarkable and worth celebrating for years to come.”

Santa Barbara Buildings Light It Blue In Support Of Healthcare & Essential Workers

BIG THANK-YOU TO HEALTHCARE AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS IS LIGHTING SANTA BARBARA BLUE this month as artists, non-profits, and businesses collaborate in the effort.

The visual spectacle began on Thursday, May 14th at 8pm, when the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf, Arlington Theater Tower, Lobero Theatre and Mission Tower lit up in blue to show gratitude to healthcare and essential workers as part of the international Light It Blue campaign.

“I’m proud of the collaboration between our community artists and art organizations to honor the hard work and sacrifice of health care professionals and frontline employees,” shared Mayor Cathy Murillo. “Thank you for providing the community with a lighting display to bring us all together.”

The City of Santa Barbara is collaborating with the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, community artists, event production companies, and the following organizations who donated

time and equipment to light community buildings: Gartner Design Company; The Environment Makers; Ethan Turpin Art and Design; Spark Creative Events (Arlington Theater Tower, Lobero Theatre, Cottage Hospital sites); Bella Vista Designs (Sea Center); Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Sea Center; Lobero Theatre; Arlington Theater; Nina Dunbar; Cottage Health System; and Mission Santa Barbara.

This highly visible, public act of support is in partnership with the #LightItBlue campaign which invites businesses, venues, and communities to turn blue in support of the frontline medical staff and essential workers who are confronting the COVID-19 pandemic in hospitals, grocery stores, and other essential businesses around the world.

S THE INITIAL SHOCK AND PANIC WEAR OFF and as a sense of the immensity of the impacts of the pandemic and the disparities it has brought into the open become clear, it is very important to decide where you stand and how you want to respond. In our community, the varied responses have been amazing. They offer all of us hope and connection. People care. But, now we’re entering a new phase and each of us is tasked with an ongoing opportunity to evaluate how we as individuals and community members will stand, in this time.

Will you look first to those you love?

Most will. Will you look to your street and the neighbors you’ve seen over the months and years you’ve been calling Santa Barbara home? Hopefully. Will you look to the businesses that have provided the context for your life, here in our exquisitely beautiful paradise?

Looking around, everyone needs the arm of community wrapped around unsteady shoulders - family, individuals, businesses, nonprofits - everyone. While the shelter in place orders haven’t been lifted, we may not be able to literally extend our hands to lift and embrace. But we can do that in other ways.

At VOICE Magazine, we have been raising up the efforts of our community members, as well as offering needed updates and information - along with sharing the voices of our regular columnists and community members.

This unfortunately comes at a difficult time for us as a local media outlet. We were impacted by the general decline in advertising revenue for printed papers even prior to the catastrophic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our economy.

But, the Community of Santa Barbara and the community of the world is called into action by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our city, our lives, our ways of doing business, our families will never be able to return to their old normals. We all are moving forward - now

ANTA BARBARA, YOUR WINERIES NEED YOU, JUST AS MUCH AS YOUR RESTAURANTS DO. While it is true that they can’t be open at all for a wine tasting, many of them are open with the aim of keeping their clientele... and also staying alive. Like restaurants, they have a lot of employees, and they need to keep them working just as much as any restaurant does.

Many of the wineries in town are doing pick-up. Some are even offering free delivery within reasonable distance, and usually with a minimum order of bottles. And, of course, they can ship the wine to you if you are reading this online from afar. Yes, most are open limited hours for pick-up. But they are open.
