REAM FOUNDATION HAS ISSUED AN INVITE FOR EVERYONE TO GO BEHIND-THE-SCENES of a beloved local program with a virtual event, a free film, about Flower Empower that will go live online on Thursday, June 25th at 11am in place of its 10th Annual Flower Empower Luncheon. A program of Dream Foundation, the only national dream-granting organization for terminally-ill adults, Flower Empower sees volunteers meeting weekly to deliver beautiful bouquets, fresh-baked cookies, fine chocolates and hand-made cards to anyone in need of comfort and cheer in hospices, cancer centers and their homes from Goleta to Carpinteria. The film will take viewers on a behind-the-scenes journey into the heart of the program that is at the heart of our community, along with how the program has adapted in response to the current pandemic. “We’ve been through a lot as a community over the years, and, thanks to all of our incredible supporters, Flower Empower has always been there,” shared Dream Foundation CEO Kisa Heyer. “It’s our way of showing each other that whatever you might be going through, someone cares.” As the pandemic took hold, Carpinteria-based grower Westerlay Orchids pledged 100,000 orchids to be given to front-line workers and those isolated in quarantine, and Flower Empower has distributed over 15,000 and counting of these since lockdown began.
If you’ve seen people handing out orchids to people who work in health care settings, teachers, and people who work in cafes or stores, or even passers-by in recent weeks, or if you received them yourself, you’ve seen Flower Empower at work. Since the program began 25 years ago, dedicated volunteers and friends have created and delivered more than 120,000 bouquets and, with that, more than 120,000 smiles. The first annual Flower Empower Luncheon was held in 2010 to raise funds to help meet the needs of the ever-growing program. This year’s move to a virtual event is in response to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 and to keep the community it loves safe. It’s a move that comes with advantages. “For the first time, we can show everyone how much Flower Empower means to all those it touches,” Heyer noted. Long-term friend of Dream Foundation and Flower Empower, Andrew Firestone, who can be seen in the film related, “We’ll miss getting together, but it’s wonderful to be able to see first-hand what happens when all of this love and generosity and care arrives in the shape of a bouquet for someone who might be going through one of the toughest things life can throw at you.” To watch the film when or after it goes live, go to the dedicated events page on Dream Foundation’s website, a special event page on Dream Foundation’s Facebook page, or look out for it on Dream Foundation’s Instagram channel. Go to the events page on Facebook, click ‘going’ and you’ll be notified of all updates before the film airs, as well as when it goes live. Live viewers will have an opportunity to receive a surprise gift.

NE OF THE JOYS OF OUR COMMUNITY RE-OPENING is the opportunity to discovering our neighbors at work in their various businesses as they adapt to provide their services safely. Now more than ever, supporting small businesses is a necessity due to the months of COVID-19 pandemic closures. This week even more businesses will open on Friday, adding to the numerous ones already forging ahead. Given the local, state, national, and international response to incidences of police brutality and racial injustices, a special focus is due for local Black-owned businesses. Following is a listing of Santa Barbara County Black-owned businesses. They may already be some of your favorite go-to shops and service providers, or you may have the opportunity to meet more of your community as you explore the array of their offerings. Supporting Black-owned (and those owned by people of color) is a way of bridging the Wealth Gap. It’s a step toward encouraging entrepreneurship, property ownership, and generational wealth. And, shopping local businesses respects the local economic chain that circulates money and shares local wealth. Supporting Black-owned businesses helps to celebrate and recognize how Blacks have participated in and helped build our community while fostering diversity and encouraging healthy competition. And, all local businesses create local jobs. Here’s to a stronger and even more diverse Santa Barbara!

Perking Up To Parklets

By Kerry Methner / VOICE
S SANTA BARBARA BUSINESSES BUSILY MAKE LEMONADE OF THE RESTRICTIONS set in place to protect the community from the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Barbara is rapidly transforming back into a lively magnet for community activity. With restaurants, art galleries, and retail outlets taking the lead, a sense of excitement and creativity is pervasive as people test what works, what appeals, and what to let fall away. One of the most visible of lemonade stands is the emergence of parklets and outdoor dining areas all around town. These have been made possible on a temporary basis as the City implemented several emergency measures in the face of the pandemic. Holdren’s • 512 State Street “I am beyond grateful to the city of Santa Barbara for Always a favorite with locals and visitors, Holdren’s is open. According to the whim or style of each business owner, the parklets are taking on their own personalities. There are some similarities - such as each parklet must be marked with reflective materials on its street side corners, offer a 3.5 foot tall barrier its three street facing sides, and not be wider than the six feet of the parking lane which it occupies. Their overall size is based on the width of the storefront itself. And, according the City’s instructions, the barrier on the traffic side should not allow pedestrians to pass through directly into traffic. From there, imagination is the limit...As restaurateurs have set up their parklets - so far that includes: Rose Café (Mesa); Foxtail; Jeannine’s (Montecito); Jane; Savoy; Little Kitchen; and Los Arroyos, they’ve had to keep in mind the six foot social distancing currently required and businesses are Los Arroyos Downtown • 14 W Figueroa Street responsible for their own parklet meeting ADA accessibility The ever popular Los Arroyos Mexican food restaurant has requirements for the accommodation of disabled persons. one of the larger parklets downtown. In addition to completed parklets, others are in the works, including at: Topa Topa; Opal; Blue Owl; Trattoria Vittoria; Press Room; and Roy. Due to the unusual circumstance of State Street being closed to vehicular traffic, those on the closed State Street blocks are not required to create parklets to expand their outdoor dining areas - they simply expand... Many restaurants and retail businesses are enjoying returning to doing a brisk trade on their sidewalks and street, lending a kind of lively, upscale plaza-like feeling to State Street. Blue Skies and Open Restaurants! By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE

OW! HOW ABOUT THE CHANGE FROM LAST WEEKS’S JUNE GLOOM / WEIRD WEATHER to the brilliant sun drenched days of last weekend? Reluctant to give up, the clouds drifted away from the mountain tops and the entire area was drenched in sunlight. Much like everyone else in housebound Santa Barbara, I took the weather as a good omen that doors were beginning to open everywhere – which, in this case, included my own. Remembering last weekend’s yummy waffle with melted butter, the Breakwater Restaurant (my favorite harbor hangout) seemed the best way to start a beautiful Sunday morning. But again … what a change! On the first visit, seats on the patio were readily available as the restaurant had just opened its doors a couple of hours earlier after two months of the COVID-19 hiatus. Sunday’s visit however, was a totally different story: the place was absolutely jam packed with people – socially distant of course! The patio and interior were as full as regulations allowed with people in line at the entrance to be checked in, seated or standing on the lawns outside, or on the walkways to be called, wherever there was a spot available at a safe distance. An erstwhile musician even found a spot under a nearby tree to entertain the bevy of waiting guests. Naturally, being the curious person I am, I wanted to know what it was like to have survived the months of closure and to reopen the Breakwater in the New Normal considering the strict regulations imposed by the State of California. A call to Sherry DeDecker who, along with her husband Steve, own the restaurant, provided some answers – at least those that I could understand. “We are open,” laughed DeDecker, “but we’re only allowed 50 percent of capacity with the six foot distancing regulations … amazing, no one seems to mind waiting though, certainly reaffirming to have that kind of a crowd!” The City of Santa Barbara has granted the

restaurant access to the lawn on the shaded Shoreline side to add space for additional tables outside the confines of the building. The area is to be similar to the State Street restaurant expansions with tables extending to the sidewalks, and in some cases even farther. “We are complying with the State mandated requirements to the letter,” explained DeDecker, “not only for our guests, but for ourselves, as well.” To insure public safety, the State requires physical distancing to the maximum possible, the use of face coverings for both customers and employees, frequent hand washing, and extensive cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces. “Not only are the tables and chairs cleaned before and after use, but the salt and pepper shakers and any surface touched by human hands is sprayed with disinfectant,” DeDecker added. Prevention training regarding the virus is provided to every employee. At checkout I noticed that the bill could be paid electronically without the use of hands, another preventative addition - that is, if you know how to do it! Preparation to reopen the restaurant was a long process, but once permission was granted, the actual set-up required eight to ten days of concentrated work. “We were fortunate to receive the Paycheck Protection Program Loan (PPP), which allowed us to reopen as soon as we did,” DeDecker noted. The thing that the DeDeckers are most proud of is the return of almost all of their employees, most of them having served at the eatery for a very long time. “Many of our employees have been with us for years and were as anxious to open as we were. We are like a family at the Breakwater,” she concluded, “we really are! Everyone likes everyone ... how great it that?” That family feeling certainly translates to the guests who most of the servers know, and greet by name. That, and those fantastic crispy waffles with strawberry jam and lots of whipped butter are just the icing on the cake. Employment Rise is Big Surprise!

HAT HAPPENED? American workers are suddenly going back on the job; at least 2.5 million of them, according to the Labor Department. That knocks down the number of unemployed to maybe 20 million, and surprised economists. A private payroll survey (ADP), that precedes the government’s, had said last Thursday their estimate of -2.8 million jobs lost had caused them to lower their guess for the official Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) number (on Friday) to the -4 million to -5 million range, versus an earlier forecast of -8 million. “These improvements in the labor market reflected a limited resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed in March and April due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and efforts to contain it,” said the BLS. “In May, employment rose sharply in leisure and hospitality, construction, education and health services, and retail trade. By contrast, employment in government continued to decline sharply.” In fact, American businesses have been going back to work for more than one month, especially in the airline, automobile, leisure and hospitality industries, per the BLS. American Airlines said Thursday that it expects to fly in July about 55 percent of the domestic capacity that was flown during July 2019, as load factor improved 55 percent at the end of May from 15 percent for the month of April. “We’re seeing a slow but steady rise in domestic demand,” said Vasu Raja, senior vice president of network strategy. “After a careful review of data, we’ve built a July schedule to match.” Airline travel has picked up substantially, in other words. On Wednesday, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said daily flights increased by 30 percent between April 21st and May 27th. The IATA said the improvement in the data suggests “the industry has seen the bottom of the crisis, provided there is no recurrence.” And tens of thousands of autoworkers started streaming back into car and truck plants across the South and Midwest in May, “a critical step toward bringing the nation’s largest manufacturing industry back to life,” according to the NY Times. Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler restarted, after Toyota, Honda, and Tesla began reopening plants. Hyundai restarted a plant in Alabama on May 4th, according to the NY Times. The manufacturing sector lost 1.32 million jobs in April, but gained 225,000 jobs back

in May. The so-called underemployment rate that includes part timers and those who have stopped looking for a job recently fell to 21.2 percent from 22.8 percent in April. But it was just seven percent in February, so the latest payroll numbers are nothing to crow about. Cities such as Detroit have also announced that hundreds of its employees are returning to work. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan revealed to Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy K. Baruah that the city is preparing “to send hundreds back to work in areas like cutting grass, road work, and construction.” The DOW Jones is up more than 900 at this writing, and S&P 500 up more than 90 points on the surprise news. It looks like many companies called back their workers at the earliest opportunity with either emails or texts after two months of layoffs, thus escaping the notice of statisticians. Is this improvement just a blip, as COVID-19 infection rates continue to climb in most of the country? We have to assume this will continue as more of the economy opens this summer, and demonstrations against police brutality continue. Any real improvements will also depend on how returning workers are treated at their job places. Will they follow CDC guidelines for workers safety with appropriate disinfection protocols, including the continued wearing of masks and social-distancing? Last Friday’s financial market euphoria smacks of an irrational exuberance based in the belief that further disruptions due to the pandemic and street protests will die down, but it’s wiser to act rationally in such times. Hospice of Santa Barbara’s “Coping with COVID-19” Series
Grieving and Creating a Memorial at Home
M
ANY FAMILIES WILL HAVE A LOVED ONE DIE during this time of social distancing when we cannot gather to say goodbye, to offer comfort to one another, and to publicly acknowledge a death and honor the life of the beloved. We know this makes a hard time harder and we are holding you and your family in our hearts. We also know it is important to ritually acknowledge this time and our grief. Here is something we can do at home while we await the time when we can hold a larger, public service. Create an Altar/Sacred Space • Gather some pictures and personal items that represent what mattered to your loved one who has died. • Select a location to create an altar or sacred space to celebrate the precious life of the beloved. Take time and make it special. We might include a fabric covering, the gathered photos and personal items, religious symbols and items, flowers, mementos, artwork from children or others, lovely articles from nature, etc. • Place at least one candle on the altar in a base or holder that
is safe to keep lit for a time. This can also become a memorial candle that is lit again when more family and friends can be together in person. • If anyone did not get to fully say goodbye, write or draw a letter of farewell and place it on the altar. • Have some other small item like beach glass, stones, hearts, or feathers that rest on the altar for a time and then can be given or sent to family and friends in memory.
Home Memorial or Celebration of Life • If sharing this experience via the phone, Zoom, or FaceTime, invite folks to an agreed upon day and time.
Courtesy Photo
By Rev. Kristen Rohm, Hospice of Santa Barbara Spiritual Care Counselor
• Think about where to place the phone or computer and what image/s to show on the screen to best honor the beloved.
• Sing a song or play music that is meaningful.
• Gather around the altar. Take a few breaths to center and calm yourself and to create a special time. Light the candle.
• Read a second poem or sacred reading as a Closing. Take a few more deep breaths.
• Say any prayers that are meaningful to those gathered and the loved one.
• To close this special time, blow out the candle knowing that the light and love of the beloved lives on within.
• Hold a time of silence in memory of the beloved and in acknowledgment of the many emotions of grief.
• Some families may want to plant seeds, flowers, or a tree in the loved one’s honor at this time or at a later date.
• Read a poem or sacred reading that is meaningful. • Share memories of the beloved, each person telling a special story or two about their time together.

OR ALMOST TWO WEEKS, thousands upon thousands of Americans have been marching across the country in memory of George Floyd and in protest of police brutality. Watching the news and driving around our cities, we have become aware of the street art, appearing daily on building facades and boarded-up storefronts: Portraits of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Graffiti statement “Black Lives Matter” and abbreviated version of it “BLM.” But one street art mural, which appeared miraculously last Friday in Washington D.C. Let’s start with Kerry James Marshall, whose 2017 fabulous solo exhibition at MOCA had the highest attendance in the museum’s history. I also remember falling in love with his art at his first exhibition here in Los Angeles, almost 30 years ago at Marti Koplin Gallery. Then you could buy his painting for about $10,000, now it’s worth millions. And what about Kara Walker, whose powerful traveling solo exhibition we experienced at the Hammer Museum in 2008. And at The Broad Museum, she is one of the few artists that has a gallery exclusively dedicated to her art. Now, looking at her gigantic sculpture, Marvelous Sugar Baby presented at the former Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, 2014, I am thinking what might come out of her studio in response to Black Lives Matter. Another amazing Los Angeles based painter, Henry Taylor had a series of powerful exhibitions organized with a unique theatrical flavor by Blum and Poe Gallery. There is no doubt that Henry Taylor will also respond with a powerful masterpiece to this painful moment in our history. Of course my friends, you and I could continue to add many more names to the list of African American artists, who could/ Top: Sixteenth Street, Washington D.C., BLACK LIVES MATTER mural. should be participants of this actual or virtual exhibition, about Bottom: Volunteers painting yellow letters. Casa del Herrero to Hold Online Art Event, Feria from Afar, to Benefit Local Arts Community
U
PHOLDING A SUMMERTIME TRADITION, Casa del Herrero will host its annual art event. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will take place online and provide necessary funds to both Casa del Herrero and local artists in the Santa Barbara community. An online art sale, Casa del Herrero’s Feria from Afar will be open for bidding Tile Niche by Wyllis Heaton, oil on canvas, 2020 next week, from June 15th to 19th. “The Casa’s original owners, George Fox and Carrie Steedman, were fortunate to build a home that remains a testament to their ingenuity and creative sensibility,” said Casa Executive Director Jessica Tade. “We are grateful to be able to have an online event that will help sustain the Casa during this uncertain time while also supporting the continued vibrancy of the arts in Santa Barbara.” Typically, at the start of summer, the Casa holds an annual fundraising event called Feria Andalusia. The afternoon is always a feast for the senses with festive music, delicious appetizers, and an exhibition showcasing the artwork of local Santa Barbara artists. The Casa will bring one of the best parts of Feria to the community by holding an online art sale featuring the artwork of local artists presenting paintings, mixed media, and fine art photography. Participating artists include Meredith Brooks Abbott, Whitney Brooks Abbott, Ann Shelton Beth, Lynn Cunningham Brown, Steve Curry, Nancy Davidson, William Dewey, Priscilla Fossek, Rick Garcia, Derek Harrison, Wyllis Heaton, Lenore Hughes, Ray Hunter, Laurie MacMillan, Ann Sanders, Richard Schloss, Frank Serrano, Garrett Speirs, Matt Straka, Thomas Van Stein, and Ralph Waterhouse. Artwork will be available for purchase beginning Monday, June 15th at 9am. All proceeds from the event will be split with 50 percent supporting Casa del Herrero and 50 percent supporting the participating artists. Feria from Afar can be viewed at: https://bit.ly/2zbXuT3 For details visit www.casadelherrero.com.

UCSB Arts & Lectures: Culture at a Click
Looking at the current moment...
U
CSB ARTS & LECTURES believes in the power of arts and meaningful dialogue to bring communities together, open minds, and help move toward a shared future. Last week, they turned to A&L artists and speakers to help us understand how we got to the current moment and how we can forge a path forward. “Today (June 5th), as demonstrators across the country stand together to demand equality and justice in the wake of the recent killing of George Floyd, we as a nation are coming to terms with who we have been and reckoning with who we are. Now is a moment when we can decide who we want to become,” shared Celesta M. Billeci, Miller McCune Executive Director. Last week’s curated selections feature Jennifer Eberhardt; Jon Batiste; Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; and Tracy K. Smith. In Jennifer Eberhardt’s 2019 lecture from the A&L archive, the Stanford social psychologist demonstrates how ingrained stereotypes can powerfully shape our visual perception, memory, and behavior. A MacArthur “genius” and one

of Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers, Eberhardt offers insight into how bias can lead to racial disparities and renders practical, actionable suggestions for reform. With password Eberhardt2019, watch the video at: https://vimeo.com/425608083 The video will be available through Friday, June 12th. Pianist Jon Batiste was scheduled to perform with UCSB Arts & Lectures this spring, but his event was among those affected by COVID-19 cancellations. Last week, Batiste released a new album with Minneapolis-born guitarist and songwriter Cory Wong. Each song title on Meditations offers a theme to meditate on that unites us during these times. “It is fitting that we are releasing this album during such a tumultuous time for the black community,” Batiste writes. “I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be a black artist in America... As you listen to the album, I invite you to also meditate on empathy. Only when we have a deepening of our collective spiritual consciousness can we begin to implement genuine and lasting change.”
Listen to Meditations at: https://open.spotify. com/album/19SzhIssFZJ5pPHmZuJOWK Historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s recent book Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow covers the period after the Civil War, when white supremacy was born as white Southerners looked for ways to roll back the newly acquired rights of African Americans. Drawing parallels between then and now, he offers valuable insight into today’s cultural moment, and how we might stop history from repeating itself. Gates’ spring A&L lecture was one of the events that was cancelled, but you can listen to his 2019 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air at: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/03/709094399/ henry-louis-gates-jr-points-to-reconstruction-asthe-genesis-of-white-supremacy

You can also check in with Smith’s own podcast The Slowdown, which dedicated this week to poems that take up questions of social justice. www.slowdownshow.org An Old Story By Tracy K. Smith We were made to understand it would be Terrible. Every small want, every niggling urge, Every hate swollen to a kind of epic wind. Livid, the land, and ravaged, like a rageful Dream. The worst in us having taken over And broken the rest utterly down. A long age Passed. When at last we knew how little Would survive us—how little we had mended Or built that was not now lost—something Large and old awoke. And then our singing Brought on a different manner of weather. Then animals long believed gone crept down From trees. We took new stock of one another. We wept to be reminded of such color.
Tracy K. Smith
Tracy K. Smith came to A&L in 2019 as the U.S. Poet Laureate. Her most recent book, Wade In the Water, connects America’s dark past and present – from slavery to today’s acts of racial violence – weaving in forgotten African American voices. N THE WAKE OF THE HORRIFIC DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD, the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® and its members reconfirm our commitment to providing equal service, equal opportunities within the industry as professionals, and promoting equal opportunity for housing. As stewards of the right to own, use, and transfer private property, REALTORS® recognize our significant role in upholding the Fair Housing Act. “The shocking, senseless death of George Floyd is tragic. Our deepest sympathies are with the Floyd family and other Staci Caplan families who understand and feel this pain and grief,” said National Association of REALTORS® President Vince Malta in a statement released to all 1.4 million members. “Our neighbors in the communities where we work and live across America should feel safe and free from discrimination. As longtime champions of fair housing, equality and inclusion are among NAR’s most cherished values. NAR is committed to leading the way on policies that address racial injustice and that build safe and inclusive communities. Building the future begins with equal access to housing and opportunity for all.” The real estate community must actively contribute to reform and unification in our industry, and in our country, by listening and by working together to be a part of the solution
to racial injustice. To this end, REALTORS® affirm our responsibility to promote inclusion, acceptance, and equality by adopting and practicing the tenets of the REALTOR® Fair Housing Declaration: I agree to: · Provide equal professional service without regard to the race, color, religion, gender (sex), disability (handicap), familial status, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity of any prospective client, customer, or of the residents of any community. · Keep informed about fair housing law and practices, improving my clients’ and customers’ opportunities and my business. · Develop advertising that indicates that everyone is welcome and no one is excluded; expanding my client’s and customer’s opportunities to see, buy, or lease property. · Inform my clients and customers about their rights and responsibilities under the fair housing laws by providing brochures and other information. · Document my efforts to provide professional service, which will assist me in becoming a more responsive and successful REALTOR®. · Refuse to tolerate non-compliance. · Learn about those who are different from me, and celebrate those differences. · Take a positive approach to fair housing practices and aspire to follow the spirit as well as the letter of the law. · Develop and implement fair housing practices for my firm to carry out the spirit of this declaration. money to support our police officers?’ And then this last week, everyone’s like ‘no, no, no, no more money for police, now we want to defund them,’ and we’re all kind of like, we’re a little shocked because we just spent two years...trying to figure out how we’re going to support the police more.” “That’s what people were asking us for at the time, but now...a lot of people are asking us for the opposite, so we’re going to just have to work with all sides and see what kind of compromise we can come up,” he said. “So we’re all a little jarred, and we just need a little time to figure out, all right, how are we going to defund them while keeping our residents safe?” His comments reflect a policy and political dilemma faced by elected officials across the country. The BLM’s “defund the police” slogan is viewed differently in various cities, in ways that range from shifting funding, by relieving officers of duty dealing with issues perhaps better handled by social workers, mental health professionals or addiction therapists – to entirely dismantling existing departments and “revinventing” law enforcement. In the interview Gutierrez also: • Apologized for comments he made at the June 2nd council meeting, when he
criticized some BLM allies for “jumping on the bandwagon” of anti-racism while he had been on that “bandwagon” his entire life: “A lot of these emails (received before the meeting) were very disrespectful, and some of them were straight out racist. Some of them didn’t seem to know I was a person of color and they were assuming I’d never done anything to combat racism and it was kind of offensive,” he said. “And I realized after I got the criticism that some of these people don’t look at me as a person of color, they look at me as the authority. They look at me as the problem, they look at me as The Man.” • Argued that the city should “completely revamp what policing is.” Citing data dug out by the Independent, Gutierrez said the SBPD is “not as discriminatory as other police departments, for whatever that’s worth...but obviously there’s a problem, there’s a big discrepancy on how people of color are being policed here...(W)e’re training officers for enforcement, to keep people in control, as opposed to helping them. People want a more compassionate response...and we don’t get it.” • Discussed multiple aspects of the current turmoil at City Hall, including embattled City Administrator Paul Casey (“he needs to work harder”); besieged Community Development Director George Buell (“there’s gonna be some changes”); and Mayor Cathy Murillo’s recent performance (“publicly shamed”).
