PROTECTING THE COAST AND MORE
CELEBRATING THE COAST AND THE ENVIRONMENT, the Environmental Defense Center of Santa Barbara held their annual Blue & Green Gala: A Coastal Celebration at Rancho La Patera and Stowe House last Sunday.
Honoring Patagonia, Inc as the Environmental Hero, the event drew about 500 guest to raise funds for environmental causes and the EDC. Accepting the award on behalf of Patagonia was CEO Ryan Gellert.
Buzzing with excitement at work accomplished and the joy of seeing old friends and making new, the grounds were brimming with people supporting the Environmental Defense Center Talk, food from Catering Connections, and local wine and beer made the event welcoming. Fresh from the announcement that the Supreme Court would uphold the fracking ban in the channel, visitors were glad to celebrate the
critical work done by the organization and to help ensure that EDC remains strong as it faces new environmental challenges and works to protect the region’s clean air and water, open space and agricultural lands, marine resources and wildlife, and our climate for generations to come.

City Staff Pivot Promenade Plans After State Street Advisory Committee Disapproval
By Daisy Scott / VOICE
IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO TRADEOFFS.
Following the State Street Advisory Committee’s May 24th meeting — where consulting firm MIG Inc. and city staff’s visions of bike paths and cars along the promenade butted heads with committee members’ demands for a pedestrian-focused environment — all parties are left reconfiguring the next step forward.
The city’s hesitancy over making trade-offs in downtown circulation emerged as the crux of the conversation. SSAC members expressed great surprise at city staff’s insistence that bicycles had to be diverted through the State Street Promenade rather than Anacapa or Chapala Streets.
“It was a goal that bikes should be part of movement on State Street,” shared SSAC member Ed Lenvik in a phone conversation with VOICE. “But we did not ever realize or were ever told that it was not an option to not have bicycles on State Street.”
MIG has primarily conferred with city staff throughout the State Street Master Plan designing process. The firm has met five times with the SSAC, sharing the results of its conversations with city staff on each occasion.
“We saw a bike-dominated plan, we did not see a pedestrian plan,” expressed Lenvik. “To be successful, they’re going to have to come back with a plan that is more oriented toward the people.”
Lenvik commented that MIG CEO Daniel Iacofano appeared “in shock” at the SSAC’s negative reaction to the three proposed plans, all of which included a 12 foot-wide bike path down the promenade. Two of the plans also called for one lane of vehicle traffic either along segments or all of the promenade. No provisions for
pedestrian-only spaces were included.
Many SSAC members voiced disapproval of the plans. They cited concerns with downtown visitors’ safety given the growing presence of electric bicycles, calling for areas that prioritized pedestrian experiences.
“I really want to see what MIG can come up with if they’re reading correctly what they’re seeing from us now, to a degree interpreting or tempering what they’re getting from staff, and if they’re careful about what the public is saying,” said Lenvik, who also sits on the Historic Landmarks Commission.
State Street Master Planner Tess Harris confirmed with VOICE that city staff and MIG are now working to revise the design proposals to better meet the SSAC’s comments, including the creation of pedestrian-only space.
“We will be discussing tradeoffs and considerations on transportation at an upcoming meeting and hope to have a broader discussion on this topic,” said Harris. “MIG and the City went through multiple iterations of designs prior to the SSAC meeting based on community feedback and technical feasibility and presented the options that the team felt like were appropriate. We heard the feedback and are making revisions – and that’s part of the process.”
She emphasized that give-and-take is a natural element of the design process.
“The design scenarios shown were the first of what I imagine will be many iterations of design,” continued Harris. “They were a starting point to get feedback, and we look forward to working with the community and the SSAC to come up with the best design for downtown Santa Barbara.”
Community members will be able to provide public feedback about plans for State Street by visiting the city’s booth at the Summer Solstice Festival from 4pm to 9pm on Friday, June 23rd, and from 11am to 9pm on Saturday, June 24th.

Homeowners Have Record Equity
By Harlan Green, Special to VOICE
MEREDITH WHITNEY, a noted real estate consultant recently interviewed on CNBC’s Squawk Box, said American homeowners have a record amount of equity in their homes. The average Loan-to-Value (LTV) of mortgages has dropped to 30 percent, which means they have 70 percent equity in their homes.
Economic VOICE
Households have another leg to stand on despite rising interest rates. The net worth of U.S. households rose by two percent in the first three months of the year to $148.8 trillion, putting it close to a record high and suggesting the economy might have enough fuel to keep growing or at least to avert a steep recession, according to the Federal Reserve’s flow of funds report.
By Harlan Green
She asserted, therefore, there is little to no chance of another housing bubble as happened in 2007 that led to the Great Recession. Many economists see the real estate sector as a leading indicator of what may happen next to our economy. It could mean there is even less of a chance that a recession may occur this year if it is based on a collapse of real estate values as happened in 2007.
“The average U.S. homeowner now has more than $274,000 in equity — up significantly from $182,000 before the pandemic,” reports CoreLogic Chief Economist Selma Hepp. “Also, while homeowners in some areas of the country who bought a property last spring have no equity as a result of price losses, forecasted home price appreciation over the next year should help many borrowers regain some of that lost equity.”
The U.S. housing market is short more than 300,000 affordable homes for middle-income buyers, according to a new analysis from the National Association of REALTORS® and Realtor.com®.
“Middle-income buyers face the largest shortage of homes among all income groups, making it even harder for them to build wealth through homeownership,” said Nadia Evangelou, NAR senior economist and director of real estate research. “A two-fold approach is needed to help with both low affordability and limited housing supply. It’s not just about increasing supply. We must boost the number of homes at the price range that most people can afford to buy.”
Most of the increase in net wealth in the first quarter was tied to a rebound in the stock market. The value of equities held by households jumped by $2.4 trillion. The ING graph shows the actual increase in the bars above the preCOVID trend line.
Household debt increased at a 2.2 percent annual rate in the first quarter to $19.2 trillion, marking one of the smallest increases in the past decade. Debt had grown as fast as eight percent as the U.S. emerged from the pandemic, said the Federal Reserve.
Meredith Whitney in another Barron’s interview said reviving the housing sector from its current slump means finding housing for Gen Z’ers and the second half of millennials that don’t have money. How are they going to become homeowners?
The construction industry is trying to help. Calculated Risk’s Bill McBride reported recently that there are 1.675 million units under construction, just 35 thousand below the all-time record of 1.710 million set in October 2022.
Of these, there are currently 977 thousand multi-family units under construction. This is the highest level since September 1973, and close to the record of 994 thousand in 1973 (being built for the baby-boom generation).
So builders and home seekers are seeing that the alternative to buying is renting and that has to make up the difference until more affordable housing is constructed.

Deceased marine mammals on local beaches raise concerns about water quality
By John Palminteri
TUESDAY, JUNE 13TH: After a social media post showing a deceased dolphin on Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara, multiple other sightings were also listed.

No official causes of death have been released by marine mammal experts.
The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) has been receiving calls

Volunteers who live in the area have been responding to check the animals and see if they can be rescued at the rehabilitation center on the Gaviota Coast.

Batter Up! for the Foresters
By John Palminteri
The City of Santa Barbara’s Parks and Recreation Department has reduced prices for summer swimming lessons and it is encouraging parents to enroll their kids. Two weeks of classes cost $50.
The youth swim lessons will be at the
Ortega Park Pool. (There’s also a parentchild class at the Los Banos Pool.)
Supervisor Tony Sholl says swimming lessons help to build confidence with those going into the water at the beach, a pool or on a vacation where water is part of the activities.
The city says the lessons improve water safety, physical development, cognitive functions, socialization, and confidence building.

SANTA
BARBARA WRITERS CONFERENCE BEGINS SUNDAY!
New Beginnings Cuts Ribbon At New Offices
OPENING NEW OFFICES AND EXPANDING SERVICES, New Beginnings held a ribbon cutting to commemorate the occasion last Friday at 530 E. Montecito Street.
“Building on our 50-year legacy in our community, New Beginnings exists to protect human dignity and to help our most vulnerable community members to be empowered to make positive and long-lasting changes in their lives,” said Jacqueline Kurta, Board President of New Beginnings. “The last few years have really shown us how important afforable mental health care is, as well as safe housing and dependable resources.”
Also addressing the crowd were Congressman Salud Carbajal and State Senator Monique LimÓn, who was a former board member of New Beginnings. There were over 100 dignitaries, community leaders, and friends in attendance.
“Since the beginning of our current fiscal year, our safe parking program and supportive services for veterans have housed over 174 people,” continued Kurta. “We’ve spent over a million dollars in financial assistance to partner with landlords to provide what it now takes to secure and maintain housing for our clients.”

SB Museum of Natural History Returns Indigenous Ancestral Remains to the Consulate General of Peru in Los Angeles
THE REMAINS of two ancestral Indigenous Peruvian individuals have been returned to the Consulate General of Peru in Los Angeles by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The remains were originally excavated from the Ancón Necropolis, northern Lima Province, in 1877 by Léon de Cessac, who donated them to the Santa Barbara State College in 1878.
They were subsequently donated to the Museum in 1925. The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has concluded that these remains are part of Peru’s National Cultural Heritage and transferred the remains into the custody of the Peruvian Government earlier this month.
“At the Museum we are committed to ensuring that Indigenous cultures and communities have the ability to regain custody of their ancestral remains and funerary objects,” said SBMNH President & CEO Luke Swetland. “We have been honored to care for these remains for many years and are grateful that we can transfer custody to the Consulate General of Peru in Los Angeles.”
Ridley-Tree Hat & Clothing Auction for Charity L
ESLIE RIDLEY-TREE’S SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY was brought to mind when her high-end designers’ fashion and tabletop estate pieces went up for auction on June 6th at Miss Daisy’s Consignment & Auction House at La Cumbre Plaza. Among the items was her unique and beautiful hat collection as well as 36 bottles of vintage wine, all auctioned to support the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara at the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center.
The event included her designer clothes and was attended by close to 200 people raising about $11, 284. One hundred percent of proceeds from the one-night only Live & Silent Auction went to the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center’s Hat & Wig Boutique.
“I met Leslie in 2015,” shared Lori Willis, Exec. Director of Cancer Foundation of SB. “She would do anything for the Cancer Center. She was always so generous to us. She named the building, gave us over ten million dollars, and still continues to give. We’re very grateful for Leslie’s support.”
Erin Graffy de Garcia, a personal friend of Leslie Ridley-Tree, provided colorful stories as she recalled Leslie Ridley-Tree wearing the various hats and outfits to memorable Santa Barbara events.
Many found that trying the hats on was irresistible and a precursor to bidding. As the gathering crowd laughed and dodged to mirrors to see how they looked in the stunning hats, they sipped wine and noshed on tasty delights while meandering through the rows of amazing hats and silent auction items.
Luke J. Swetland, M.A., M.I.L.S. President & CEO SBMNH
This transfer of custody is made in solidarity with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Peru concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Archaeological Material from the Pre-Hispanic Cultures and Certain Ethnological Material from the Colonial Period of Peru.
The SB Museum of Natural History agrees with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ statement that “Indigenous peoples have the right to […] the repatriation of their human remains.”
Learn more about the Museum’s repatriation work at www.sbnature.org/repatriation
In addition to the live auction, an online auction is in progress and will close on July 6th. Many of the items in the on-line auction are on display at the Louis John Boutique, within Miss Daisy. To bid on the collection visit: https://consignmentsbymmd.com/pages/auctions Bidding closes July 6th.

GridStor Installs Emission-Free Batteries at New Goleta Facility Site
FORGING THE WAY OF CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITIONS,
GridStor, a developer, owner, and operator of battery energy storage systems, is installing 44 emissionfree batteries at the company’s new 25,000-square foot facility. The facility is located on a 2.6-acre commercial/ industrial lot on Cortona Drive in Goleta. Once online, the 60 MW / 160 MWh lithium-ion battery facility will be the biggest in Santa Barbara County, capable of powering over 30,000 households through the hours of the day when electric infrastructure is most stressed, in the latest step towards realizing California’s goal to decarbonize its economy.
“Climate change is the single greatest common challenge facing every one of us today, and with the opening of this facility we’re very excited to be meeting the moment for America’s demand for a clean and reliable electrical grid while also providing benefits to communities in Santa Barbara County,” said Chris Taylor, CEO of GridStor. “All of us depend every day on a reliable electric system, and as we keep adding wind and solar energy to the grid, battery energy storage projects like our facility in Goleta will provide essential
assistance to maintain that reliability at all hours of the day and in all conditions.”
The Goleta facility is expected to come online in Fall of 2023. GridStor builds large-scale battery systems that connect directly into the power grid, providing critical infrastructure for reliable energy as the grid increasingly incorporates intermittent wind and solar power sources. The company strategically sites battery storage projects close to where demand is greatest to maximize delivery from renewable resources. This approach also helps build more resilient communities in the face of threats posed by climate change and severe
weather.
As the second and largest battery in Santa Barbara County, GridStor’s Goleta facility will bring a range of environmental, financial, and security benefits to the region. GridStor’s batteries will be capable of storing enough power to supply the equivalent of all of Goleta’s residential customers for up to four hours in the event of a blackout. This provides Santa Barbara County residents another option for local reliability and reduces dependence on the highly polluting Ellwood Generating Station, a gas-powered peaker plant, and other fossil power sources.

2nd Story Associates Seeking Donations for New Affordable Housing Project
COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN HELP FURNISH HOPE this summer as construction on the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara’s (HACSB) newest affordable housing project, Vera Cruz Village, nears completion. Vera Cruz Village will be located at 116 E. Cota Street and is designated for people with special needs or those experiencing homelessness. Many of the incoming residents will have few possessions and little to no income. Accordingly, 2nd Story Associates, HACSB’s affiliate nonprofit, is encouraging local community members to offer additional support in the form of monetary donations through its Furnishing Hope program.
The Furnishing Hope program supports Housing Authority clients that are more vulnerable with beds and other basic household items, including Welcome Home Kits, to make their new living space truly feel like home.
A donation of any amount will cover the cost of providing a formerly houseless individual with essential items upon moving in such as bed linens, cookware, kitchen utensils, toiletries, etc. Construction is expected to be finished in late summer 2023. The facility will provide regular, free, and on-site supportive services; internet service; a community room for resident programming, and more.
To learn more or make a donation, visit: www.2nd-story.org/vera-cruz-court-adoptaroom

Old Mission Santa Barbara
Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling: The Exhibition
By Richard Payatt, Special to VOICE
EVEN IF YOU HAVE SEEN MICHELANGELO’S SISTINE CHAPEL CEILING IN PERSON
IN ROME, you have never seen it like this! No. Really. You have never seen it like this. And it is worth going to our beloved Old Mission Santa Barbara to get a look at the show about this masterpiece while it is still here.
The Sistine Chapel is one of the great must-see wonders of the world. However, to see it in
Rome you wait in line for hours, get crammed into a crowded room, and then have to stare up at the ceiling in between a couple of basketball players who are blocking your view. The ceiling is sixty feet up, and it seems so far away. After craning your neck for twenty minutes you begin to wonder how much longer you can take this without chewing a dozen aspirin. There are a few tables with mirrors that enable you to see the ceiling without breaking your neck, but they are crowded tight with other tourists. It is a grand experience to see the Chapel in

person. You are always glad that you came. But what an exhausting time!
Right here in Santa Barbara, Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling: The Exhibition spares you all of that. You get to look at it all up close. The masterpieces of the ceiling were photographed with high pixel count cameras, reproduced at an astonishing quality and brought down to earth. The images as we see them in the show are at a ratio of one to one with the original artwork. That means that sixty feet of distance vanishes, and you can stand a foot away. Even better, none of the images are on the ceiling. They are presented as paintings on the walls of the Mission’s exhibition rooms. You look straight at them. Isn’t that nice? No need for Tylenol. And because they are presented life size, but right in front of you, you can really marvel at the scale of Michelangelo’s masterwork. The colors of the reproductions
are perfect. The soft sherbetcolored pastels of the clothing will dazzle you when you look at them so closely. You can see the brush strokes. You can marvel at the figure drawing. How did Michelangelo manage to do that standing on scaffolding sixty feet in the air and painting over his
head on wet plaster? And then at one end of the first exhibition space you get the bonus of Michelangelo’s Last Judgement, the fresco painted behind the alter some twenty-four years after he finished the ceiling. This is presented once again in its actual size.
You just cannot beat this opportunity to see these works as perhaps only Michelangelo himself saw them.
The show is split between two exhibition spaces, and also includes a self-guided tour of the Mission itself. This gives you a chance to see the Mission at a leisurely pace and without the usual cadre of your visiting relatives that you have to keep entertained. The show will run through September 4th. So don’t miss this chance to see the most written about piece of art in the history of mankind without having to hop on a plane to Rome, battle crowds, and get a neck ache. Be good to yourself.
Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition is open daily 9:30am – 5pm (last entry at 4pm) • Old Mission Santa Barbara is located at 2201 Laguna, Santa Barbara www.santabarbaramission.org

A portion of proceeds of sales from the show will benefit Shelter Box, a Santa Barbara non-profit working to build awareness of global displacement and to facilitate providing families with lifesaving shelter and essential tools and supplies that will enable them to rebuild their homes and transform their lives after disaster.
The show will be held in the outdoor food court area of the Marketplace plaza and give visitors the opportunity to view and purchase the association’s artwork as well as enjoy the music of Tom Henderson’s Summerland Band from 12 noon-3pm. Henderson, a well-known watercolorist, also has served on the SBCC Lifelong Learning art faculty. Sponsors include Art Essentials, Camino Real Marketplace, Limousine Link, and VOICE Magazine.
The GVAA began as a small group of artists who first met in March 1963, showing their artwork at a Goleta bank. From its first meeting place in the office of the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce to its present-day site at the Goleta Public Library, the Association has grown from 16 members to over 200 members. The association has resumed monthly exhibitions at the Goleta Public Library.
