For 31 years, the mission of ASAP Cats has been to save the lives of cats by providing shelter, veterinary care, behavioral support, adoption and foster services, education and community outreach. We save the lives of almost 1,000 cats and kittens through the partnership and support of our community, who recently opened their homes and hearts to 200+ cats for temporary fostering during the COVID-19 pandemic. This initially temporary “virtual sheltering” model was so beneficial, not only for the cats, but for their human caretakers, that we decided to launch a new permanent program. HE SHOW MUST GO ON... EVEN IF IT IS VIRTUAL! Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara will look a little different this year as they carry on with the festivities in a virtual format due to the pandemic. This week Old Spanish Days revealed the winners of the Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta 2020 Auditions naming Alena Velasco Spirit of Fiesta 2020 and Alexandra Nocker the Junior Spirit of Fiesta 2020. The surprise announcement was made last Sunday at the historic Arlington Theatre which displayed their names on the iconic marquee. They performed their first dance on Thursday, Alena Velasco, Spirit of Fiesta 2020 June 18th on KEYT Channel 3. “I am very proud of Alena and Alexandra and look forward to seeing them bring a lot of joy to our community over the next couple of months,” shared El Presidente Erik Davis. “Their resilience and perseverance in the

TOP HONOR FOR ONLINE CLASSES has been added to a list of distinctions for Santa Barbara City College. The Optimal Guide to Online Schools recently rated Santa Barbara City College among the top ten best California community colleges to earn an online associate degree or certificate. As the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted higher education to an unprecedented extent, many students are rethinking the traditional model of a brick-and-mortar education, considering instead the benefits and safety of pursuing an online degree. To assist students in finding the best option for their individual needs during this time, Optimal (formerly SR Education Group) recently released the 2020 Best Online Community College Rankings on Guide to Online Schools. The rankings include a nationwide best overall community college ranking, as well as 41 individual state rankings. Santa Barbara City College was ranked at number seven out of all California Community Colleges. “More than ever, this recognition of the quality of our online programs is a source of pride for us,” commented Executive Vice President of Educational Programs Pamela Ralston. “It is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff to engage in continuous improvement of our course offerings, technology supports, and student services. Especially now Pamela Ralston, as we work to bring even more instruction online, SBCC faculty work to SBCC EVP of bring quality and personal engagement into our online offerings.” Educational Programs Each community college was ranked by several important factors, including retention rate, graduation rate, percentage of online enrollment data, and the number of online associate degrees offered. Community colleges with online programs offer an affordable option for students who want to begin their education path at home and bypass the unpredictability of what the fall semester may bring. Additionally, this choice can eliminate the financial strain of a four-year, on-campus degree at a traditional university, an important consideration as students face an uncertain economy. Earlier this year SBCC also received recognition for its online programs from Intelligent.com and Value Colleges. SBCC’s 2020 Fall semester begins Monday, August 24th. Bailey Reid Signs with Chicago Cubs

TAND-OUT RELIEF PITCHER AND WESTMONT GRADUATE (2020), BAILEY REID signed a professional contract with the Chicago Cubs this week. “His growth as a player over the last four years has been exceptional,” commented Westmont head coach Robert Ruiz, in an interview with Tim Heiduk. “I am so proud of his work ethic, his drive, and his willingness to pour into his development as a pitcher. He is a great teammate and we will miss having him in our dugout. To witness what he has accomplished over the last four years has been a privilege and a joy. I am grateful for the mark he left on our program.” Reid was recruited to the Westmont baseball program to play third base and had never pitched in high school. “I’m absolutely thrilled to continue my baseball career,” stated Reid in an interview with Heiduk. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.” Dating back to April 3rd, 2018, Reid finished his Westmont career throwing 28.2 consecutive scoreless innings, striking out 54 batters during that period.

Commemorating Emancipation and Black Heritage on Juneteenth
A
CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM AND HERITAGE, Juneteenth in Santa Barbara will honor local black histories, the end of slavery, and the future with a cyber event called a “Digital Diaspora” on June 19th from 8am to 5pm. Following national attention around Black Lives Matter, Juneteenth will also bear witness to the continued systemic racism in America today with remembrances of needless loss of life at the hands of the police. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally recognized and celebrated commemoration of the end to slavery in the United States. It is an observance born in 1865 at Galveston, Texas, a full two years after
the legal declaration of emancipation, when African American Emancipation Day was announced on June 19th by Maj. General Gordon Granger. Santa Barbara Juneteenth recently received both recognition and funding from the Santa Barbara City Council to help raise awareness of Black heritage in the city, following an appeal from hundreds of advocates for Black Lives Matter Santa Barbara. In 1979 Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday. They were followed by 41 states and Washington DC. A world wide effort was launched by AL Edward in 1997 with the founding of www.juneteenth.com

Bringing Colorful Delights - Flower Empower Luncheon Goes Virtual with Film Premiere HEN FLOWER EMPOWER COORDINATOR VALERIE BANKS first heard rumors that California was going to shut down in response to COVID-19, she was worried. “We’ve kept going through fires and the debris flow, but this was different,” she said. “For the first time in the 25 years since the program began, we thought, is this going

to stop us?” At the same time, Toine Overgaag, the president and owner of Westerlay Orchids, a long-time supporter of Flower Empower, made a pledge to give 100,000 orchids to the community at large. Both Overgaag and Banks saw how they could work together to get some of those orchids out into the community, but it was clear that Flower Empower needed to make a few swift changes to the way it ran. Usually, volunteers meet weekly to create bouquets and bundle them with freshly baked cookies, fine chocolates, and hand-made cards which are then delivered to anyone in need of comfort and cheer from Goleta to Carpinteria. It’s a fun, social gathering of people of all ages where strong friendships are formed. Kira Duffy, Flower Empower’s Youth Volunteer of the Val picks up flowers for arrangements year for 2020, started coming when she was just ten years old, following the footsteps of her older sister who also volunteered for the program and her mother, Jennifer Duffy, who was Flower Empower’s Volunteer of the Year in 2018. This year’s Volunteer of the Year, Boris Palencia, met his wife, Thea, by volunteering, and their son, Mateo, made his first appearance at Flower Empower when he was just ten days old. “But we had to keep everyone’s safety and social distance rules in mind,” shared Valerie. “So, following expert advice, we had long-time volunteers creating bouquets at home with flowers from our growers, including Florabundance, Gallup & Stribling, Myriad Flowers International, and Maximum Nursery, and sharing them with neighbors, friends, and essential workers. And, we had the orchids from Westerlay Orchids. That was like a miracle. We started working with other community organizations to give those out to healthcare workers, grocery store employees, teachers, and many other service workers to say thank you for keeping us going throughout lockdown.” Since lockdown began, Flower Empower has given 15,000 orchids and counting. “You would have thought we were giving away gold!” commented one volunteer on the response they received from recipients. And, in recognition of this extraordinary gift to the community, Dream Foundation created the Flower Empower Special Award for Outstanding Contribution especially for Westerlay Orchids and Overgaag.
The decision to go virtual Meanwhile, Kisa Heyer, chief executive officer of Dream Foundation, had a different problem to solve. “This year should have been our tenth anniversary Flower Empower Luncheon,” she explained. “The program has been growing every year, and this lunch raises crucial funds, as well as allowing us to get together and celebrate everyone who makes it possible. Kate and Arthur Coppola, our Program Sponsor for this Flowers were delivered to Cottage Hospital year, have given tremendous support to every single Dream Foundation program for a very long time, and Kim Curtis of TOAST Santa Barbara, who is our Florist of the Year, helps us get flowers from weddings and events that we can repurpose as bouquets. One of our sponsors and luncheon committee members, Robin Himovitz, has made over 120,000 cookies since the program began, and Chocolats du CaliBressan gave 1,920 delicious artisan chocolates last year alone. So we were really looking forward to getting together to say thank you. We had a beautiful venue booked—The Rockwood Woman’s Club. Then lockdown started and we had to move the date and cross our fingers, and then it got to the point where we just had to admit defeat. We knew we’d have to cancel the lunch.” Heyer made the decision to move the luncheon to a virtual event and make a film that could be premiered online. “Like the miracle of the gift of 15,000 Orchids from Westerlay Orchids, another miracle happened,” she related. “The Rockwood Woman’s Club were so kind and understanding and let us push the reservation until next year. And Belmond El Encanto let us use their grounds so that
we could film in a beautiful setting while following the rules for social distancing.” Andrew Firestone, a long-time friend and supporter of Dream Foundation and Flower Empower, is host of the virtual event. Experts including Dr. Frederic C. Kass, medical oncologist at Ridley-Tree Cancer Center; Rick Keith, executive director at VNA Health Foundation; David Selberg, chief executive officer at Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc.; Katie Hoegh-Guldberg, director of sales and marketing at Casa Dorinda; and Westerlay Orchids were delivered to the Fairview Vons Paloma Espino, house manager at Sarah House, give moving testimonials, talking about how patients respond when the flower deliveries arrive at their facilities. Michelle Apodaca, director of Deckers Gives and board administrator at Deckers Brands, talks about why Deckers encourages staff to volunteer with Flower Empower Westerlay Orchids were delivered to and how their Serenity House work together began with Barbara Allcock, Flower Empower’s Corporate Partner of the Year for 2020. As the film started to come together, everyone was excited. “Our sponsors were amazing,” Heyer said. “When we had to cancel the lunch, we thought, ‘oh no! Is this going to be a disaster for the program?’ But we told our sponsors what we were doing and how it was going, and they came through. In fact, this year’s sponsorship is higher than it’s ever been. That was another miracle.” Heyer is thrilled with the final film. “The film is so uplifting and manages to capture the extraordinary contributions that make Flower Empower possible, everything it means to this community and what it’s been doing since lockdown began. Another one of our growers, Erik Van Wingerden talks about Myriad Flowers International’s involvement, and Melinda, Mikayla and Emmerson Werner talk about why they volunteer, and we also hear from Tara Haaland-Ford who was a Flower Empower recipient but has since become a volunteer. We can even take people behind the scenes when deliveries are made and people receive their bouquets – and that’s not something we can usually show.”

NOTHER SPECTACULAR SANTA BARBARA WEEKEND under blue skies and Chamber of Commerce weather seemed to bring the entire world out! Driving along Cabrillo Boulevard the streets were crowded with sun lovers, the parking lots were full once again, and the harbor walkway was jumping! Walking toward the breakwater reminded me of my current theme of ‘Openings.’ This week the spotlight is on the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s first open weekend after being dark for (far too many) weeks. Not only did the Yacht Club open its doors, but it hosted it’s first race of the 2020 yachting season. Better late than never, right? Commodore Garry Pawlitski certainly spoke for most of the Club’s members, “It was like coming home after being away on a very long, strange vacation, with the feeling that this is the perfect place to be.” Who knew the Club
would ever consider closing on a weekend? Closed for a global pandemic? ... not exactly in the plan. The fact that the Club was finally open didn’t mean that it was done with the turn of a key. Not by a long shot! I guessed that the California Department of Public Health must have been a major player in this kind of a huge enterprise. I actually looked at the Health Departments requirements online, and ended up scrolling thru what seemed like instructions from NASA on how to navigate a mission to Mars. Curious as ever, I approached the Yacht Club’s General Manager, Rich Nahas. “In opening the Club one of the most important factors for me was that the Club respect the comfort level of our members,” he explained. “After this long hiatus, and of course meeting the comprehensive regulations required to open our doors, we want our members to return to us feeling completely safe.” During the time the Club was closed, take-out meals were made available and will be continued
for those who remain cautious about dining out. The interior of the Club is reduced to less then 50 percent capacity with tables more than six feet apart for the safety of both staff and guests. “Everything is scaled back and changes have been made, including adjusting the Yacht Club’s hours. HE HEAD OF STEAM ANALOGY seems to be working for our economic recovery, as consumers let off steam after two months of staying at home with a burst of shopping activity from the re-openings. We said last week that many employers, including the auto and airline sectors, had been hiring back their employees over the past month, hence a surprise jump in employment with the 2.5 million jobs increase in May. Now, both consumer sentiment and retail sales, are beginning to recover. “Consumer sentiment posted its second monthly gain in early June,” said University of Michigan survey chief economist Richard Curtin last Friday, “paced by gains in the outlook for personal finances and more favorable prospects for the national economy due to the reopening of the economy. The turnaround is largely due to renewed gains in employment, with more consumers expecting declines in the jobless rate than at any other time in the long history of the Michigan surveys.” And retail sales jumped 17.7 percent last month, the government said Tuesday, after two months of record declines. Sales had tumbled by a record 14.7 percent in April and 8.2 percent in March. The rebound in sales also reflects the loosening of restrictions on business activity after two months of stay-at-home orders to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The burst of activity comes from pent-up consumer demand, as we said, i.e., not being able to shop for at least two months. Federal tax payments to families and more generous unemployment benefits also helped stoke higher sales. Yet even after the rebound in May, sales were still six percent lower compared to the same month in 2019, showing the lingering damage caused by the lockdown of the economy. This tells me we will have a U-shaped economic recovery where GDP
EconomicVOICE contraction will bottom and begin a gradual rise, rather than a quick return to normal growth (the V-shaped recovery). This is because, “Few consumers anticipate the reestablishment of favorable economic conditions anytime soon. Bad times financially in the economy as a whole during the year ahead were still expected by two-thirds of all consumers, and a renewed downturn was anticipated by nearly half over the longer term,” Curtin added. Sales increased across the board with autos up 44 percent, clothing sales up 188 percent, 90 percent at home-furnishing stores, and 88 percent at stores that sell books, music, sporting goods, and other hobby items. Receipts also increased 29 percent at bars and restaurants that bore the brunt of the coronavirus lockdowns in March and April, said MarketWatch. The perennially poor and science-denying red states currently have the highest infection rates with the exception of Oregon in second place and purple Florida ranked fourth, according to today’s NPR COVID-19 dashboard (June 16th). States that listen to scientists will likely recover first and return sooner to a more normal growth, whereas the states and local governments that choose not to listen to experts in their haste to perhaps salvage the November election will likely continue to suffer from higher rates of infections and social-isolation. Hospice of Santa Barbara’s “Coping with COVID 19” Series

URING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, we are all at least grieving the loss of normalcy in our comforting routines and expectations. Some of us are grieving far more personal and threatening losses such as income, assets, businesses, jobs, and social isolation. Some of those losses are temporary, some will be difficult to replace, and some will be lost forever. This kind of grief requires an attachment that is difficult for us to relinquish. Although we may suffer and struggle, we often find satisfactory replacement attachments. When we are fortunate enough, resilient and adaptive enough, these replacement attachments often approximate or exceed what had been previously lost. This often causes us to conclude that these losses happened for a reason and/or that we benefited from a special protection. However, there is another kind of grieving that is uniquely different and far more difficult – it is called bereavement. In bereavement we are grieving a loss, through death, of the person and the intimate relationship we kept. In death we experience the permanent separation from the one we loved. In the case of end of life illness, some may engage in
anticipatory bereavement to help prepare before actual death. For most of us, anticipatory bereavement is far too threatening to approach and is defended with denial. In intimate relationships, it is not uncommon for one of us to be preparing for the impending death while the other remaining in denial. This dynamic enables the relationship to maintain a sense of balance of hope and truth. In intimate relationships, we experience a blurring of our personal boundaries based upon needs, wants, strengths, and weaknesses. This causes a couple’s identity to emerge that can enable us to be better versions of ourselves. The death or the impending death is experienced as an existential threat to our identity as a couple – we are painfully being unwound and undone. Bereavement or anticipatory bereavement is literally the cost of love. In bereavement, we are simultaneously continuing and discontinuing our bond with the deceased and forming a new relationship with the deceased over time. Further, in bereavement or anticipatory bereavement our previous major losses, even non-death losses, may get reactivated – especially if those losses have had underlying unresolved issues or conflict. Fortunately, the passage of time is favorable in bereavement, if given care and attention. Over time, we learn to cope and live with the

loss – often expressed not so much as getting better but as getting different. In death there is no replacement for the person we loved nor the intimate relationship we kept. Sometimes, there are subsequent new relationships, or reinvestment in other intimate relationships that can help fill the void and niches. In bereavement, there are opportunities for personal growth that can only occur in the midst of our suffering. Our willingness to embrace our own suffering is essential to our psychological and spiritual growth and is inextricably linked to our capacity to experience joy. www.hospiceofsantabarbara.org

Wine Tasting Returns to Santa Barbara

HIS LAST WEEK, the City and County Health Department allowed wineries to return to normal wine tasting. (Previously, they were required to serve food with wine, and could only serve a glass or a bottle of wine.) Along with the capacity to expand onto the sidewalks, parking lots, and parking spaces in front of their locations to facilitate social distancing, it has become a very interesting and lively time for the winemakers of Santa Barbara. Seating inside of the tasting rooms is usually limited. So even with the outside space available for seating, it may benefit you to phone ahead and secure a

Nathan Huff: Meandering the Edges
T
HE ARCHITECTURAL FOUNDATION OF SANTA BARBARA GALLERY is now open for in-person viewing and they have retained the exhibtion of work local artist and art professor Nathan Huff for one last (and first) in-person peak. An installation of works on paper and sculpture by Huff, the exhibition is installed in unconventional ways on the walls, floor, and corners of the AFSB’s meeting space/ gallery. Visitors will discover Huff’s paintings on paper of furniture, wood floors, tables, and shovels, all drawing attention to the space itself as an important part of the narrative. This unique Painting by Nathan Huff exhibition encourages viewers to muse and meander their way through an ordinary environment transformed by art, inviting them to imagine scenarios and summon lost memories as they go. “As someone fascinated by the stories that reside in our memories and are imbedded in the built environment, I believe that the designed aesthetic of architectural space has a powerful impact on our home life and community structures,” Huff noted. “I hope that this imagined excavation of home invites viewers towards attentive looking at built environments in new ways, charging them with a range of narrative potential and drawing out latent emotion,” he added.

HESE DAYS, with most museums and galleries temporarily closed, I continue to receive numerous email invitations to “visit” virtual viewing rooms. But while it is better than nothing, for me, not seeing art in person is like staring at a plate of delicious food, without being able to taste it. However, in the last few days, some cultural news and announcements have brought some hope. California museum’s received permission to reopen at the end of this week, but most of them have decided they will need weeks, if not months, to work out logistics before reopening their doors, so they can meet LA County guidelines. Meanwhile, a number of art galleries announced that they are open by appointment to visit their current exhibitions. So, let’s check out what art is available for us to see around LA. Hauser & Wirth is hosting an ambitious, museum quality exhibition of the late Italian artist, Lucio Fontana (1899-1968). The exhibition, Lucio Fontana. Walking the Space: Spatial Environments, 1948-1968 highlights his contributions to Conceptual and Spatial art. Fontana went beyond the conventions of painting by using new technology, including neon, and placing the viewer at the center of the installation. His work influenced major artists such as Piero Manzoni, Yayoi Kusama, and Ambiente spaziale con James Turrell. neon (Spatial Environment Smaller, but an equally with Neon Light) 1967 important exhibition at Hauser ‘Lucio Fontana. Walking the Space: Spatial Environments, & Wirth is devoted to renowned 1948-1968,’ Hauser & Wirth German photographer, August Los Angeles, 2020. By Lucio Sander (1876-1964) titled, Fontana. Fondazione Lucio August Sander: New Women, Fontanta by SIAE 2020 New Men, and New Identities. The exhibition includes “original examples of the first gay and lesbians journals ever published.” Wilding Cran Gallery invites us to The Huntington Library, Art Museums and ,visit the exhibition

by six Los Angeles based artists, whose figurate works reflect upon our “collective state of uncertainty and isolation.” So, it is not a surprise that the title of the exhibition is, It’s a sad and beautiful world…. Luis De Jesus Los Angeles gives us a chance to be amused and fooled by Chris Engman’s photographs, that give you a sensation that what you see is three-dimensional paper Building facade of Petersen Automotive Museum sculptures. But no, my friends, don’t trust your eyes. Come close, and “touch” these framed photos with your eyes, and discover to your astonishment that you have been magically tricked. Solo exhibition by New York based artist, Simone Leigh (b. 1967) at David Kordansky Gallery focuses on the experience of black women. Leigh’s works incorporate clay, bronze, and Cupboard XI (Titi), by Simone Leigh, 2020 glazed raffia-materials traditionally stoneware, steel, and raffia 69 x 93 x 72 inches associated with African art. Her ceramic sculptures are described in the gallery press release as “large, bulbous, bottle-like vessels and a bellshaped figure that is both monumental and intimate.” While most of California museums are still in the process of figuring out when and how they are going to open, here are three Secretary at West German Radio in Cologne institutions that, Thank God, by August Sander. 1931. Laguna Art Museum has a few exhibitions, including particularly appealing, Travels in Mexico, 20th century watercolors from Diane and E. Gene Crain Collection. In better times, after seeing this exhibition I would jump on a plane to go to Mexico. But at least now, seeing these watercolors, I can allow myself to dream about a trip there… In mid-March, by sheer coincidence, I went to The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens on the last day before they closed to the public. Now, The Huntington announced phased reopening, starting first with their Gardens. In mid-June Gardens are open for members only, but at the beginning of July, the Gardens will be open for all of us. But once again, tickets have to be reserved well in advance. And last but not least, Petersen Automotive Museum opens Installation shot Chris Engman’s: Looking this Friday, June 19th, to the public with several exhibitions including, Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The exhibition “explores cult classic films and stories that have envisioned fantastic futuristic worlds, technologies, characters, and cars.” Every time I pass this museum with its unique façade, it reminds me of a bouquet of shimmering freeways. Santa Barbara County Will Not Reopen Expanded Personal Care Services At This Time
T
HE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT will not move forward in reopening expanded personal care service industries at this time. The California Department of Public Health issued guidance on June 12th for these industries, stating that reopening can be implemented only with County Health Officer approval following a review of local epidemiological data. The increase in recent hospitalizations coupled with ongoing increases in COVID-19 positive cases have led to the County’s decision to pause reopening. The Public Health Department will continue to monitor data metrics to evaluate the impact of sectors that have already opened. An update regarding reopening of expanded personal care services will be provided later next week. Personal Care Services that must remain closed include, but are not limited to: Estheticians; Skin Care and Cosmetology services; Electrology (permanent hair removal); Nail Salons; Body Art Professionals; Tattoo Parlors; Piercing Shops; Massage Therapy (including non-healthcare settings); and Businesses offering facials, electrolysis, and waxing. “Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of all community members, particularly our most vulnerable, Public Health leadership has decided to hold on further reopening,” shared Dr. Henning Ansorg, Health Officer for Santa Barbara
County. “We urge all residents to take this time to evaluate how they can limit their exposure to people outside their homes. This virus will continue to spread unless we take action to stop it.” All community members are reminded to diligently: Stay home whenever possible. The State’s Stay at Home Order remains in effect; Remain six feet away from others and wear a face covering when away from home; Limit interaction with people outside your home and work place; Wash your hands frequently with soap and water; and Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. While Santa Barbara County has made the decision to delay reopening of expanded personal services at this time, Ventura County is closely monitoring local conditions and still considering whether to pursue the same course of action with the goal of slowing COVID-19 regionally.
