Fellows Return This Weekend for an In-Person Summer Festival

What has your academy experience meant to you as a music professional?

It’s given me a lot more confidence as a performer and as a person in general.

The intensity of the program, and the emphasis on being a well-rounded musician I believe are really preparing me for most situations I will encounter during my career.

A

stellar cast and crew will begin assembling this weekend as over 110 Music Academy of the West Fellows and associated faculty and guest artists begin arriving for the 2021 Summer Festival celebrated in-person this year.

A pretty evenly divided mix of male and female classical musicians specializing in everything from voice, to trombone, to keyboard, to harp, those gathering represent many of the most gifted up-andcomers of the classical world.

Santa Barbara County local, Connor Alexander Rowe of Lompoc, one of those gifted musicians, will be participating in his third Summer Festival.

He’ll be joined by fellows from around the world for the Festival that begins Monday, June 28th and runs through Saturday, August 7th, and then is followed by a week of video content to be released online through August 14th.

The first public event will take place July 5th.

This year fellows will again be staying on the Westmont Campus, a short distance from the MAW’s Miraflores Campus, where many sessions and events are held.

This will be a big change for those fellows who attended digitally in 2020.

That year marked an alltime high for the number of musicians applying to the

me. Improvisation allows me to explore things I can do with the trombone that aren’t asked in conventional settings.

Summer School & Festival.

2,020 candidates applied for the 139 fellowships.

Eventually, the 2020 Festival transitioned from an in-person program to a online program, the Music Academy Remote Learning Institute, and those enrolled were given the opportunity to defer their enrollment and were welcomed back to the 2021 Summer School & Festival.

Rowe was one of the fellows who attended digitally and returns for the in-person experience.

He agreed to answer some questions for VOICE readers as he anticipates the start of the Festival.

Do you come from a family of musicians? How did you get started in music?

My parents both played in band through high school, but went into science instead. I started playing in the All Valley Band in Lompoc in 5th grade.

Is this your first instrument or did you move on to it?

What made you decide to pursue music as a vocation and trombone in particular?

I tried all the band instruments, and trombone was the only one I could

make a sound on! I learned to play a few songs by ear and got hooked. In 7th grade, I got to hear the Music Academy brass section play Mahler’s 5th Symphony. It was so awe-inspiring, I was convinced to make my life about playing music like that.

What inspires you to play music?

When I sit in the orchestra, it feels right. It feels like home.

Is there a piece of music that you continue to return to for inspiration?

Not really—I actually try to broaden my listening as much as possible so I can bring more back to the music I play. I have recently gotten into English folk music—the melodies are enchanting!

Who are your role models for this instrument?

I have had quite few role models, Jorgen van Rijen, Joseph Alessi, Ralph Sauer, Christian Lindberg, Mark Lawrence, and Alain Trudel.

How do you prepare yourself for improvisations?

Usually listening to music I like, then I may play along until ideas come to

I grew up in Lompoc, and have been coming to Music Academy classes and performances since I was 12, so for me, getting to play in these great spaces brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Seeing my friends and teachers again! And performing the extended version of Appalachian Spring. [Granada Theatre, July 31st at 7:30pm conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas] Do you have a favorite Santa Barbara memory or place?

I have so many memories of Santa Barbara—too many to pick a favorite. One simple thing that never ceases to bring a smile to my face is feeling the sun through the cool, dewy air in the morning. So many wonderful days here have begun with that.

Relationships with other fellows, musicians, faculty, do they carry over after the summer is over?

Absolutely! One of the best parts of Music Academy is making new friends. n

A Soon To Be Hometown Favorite

A

lessia Guehr has spent her life in restaurants.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, some of her most cherished memories are peeling bell peppers and burning crème brûlées as her father, chef Norbert Schulz of local restaurant The Nook, catered various events. Now, she looks toward harnessing her passions for pastry and the Santa Barbara community in opening Alessia Patisserie & Cafe at 314 E. Canon Perdido St. next week.

“I hope to cultivate an environment where my creations bring my guests back to a fond memory or moment in their life that brings them happiness and nostalgia,” Guehr shared.

“A lot of memories in our lives stem from food: cooking together, enjoying a meal, certain smells, and as a chef, bringing happiness through my creations is truly the most fulfilling experience for me and I cannot wait to share this with my community.”

Spending nine years working at the Four Seasons Resort, ultimately becoming an assistant pastry chef, Guehr decided to continue exploring the restaurant world. She went on to Sous-chef Jordan Pilarski work at Bouchon Bakery

before moving to San Francisco, where she was the assistant pastry chef at Le Marais Bakery.

Yet Guehr missed Santa Barbara. She resumed working at the Four Seasons, also taking the time to attend professional pastry classes at the Melissa Coppel Chocolate & Pastry School in Las Vegas. As she continued working in her beloved hometown, she grew inspired to branch out on her own and give back by doing what she loves best: making pastries.

“I don’t want my shop to be just another place you buy a croissant; Santa Barbara is my home, this patisserie is my baby, my employees are my family, and I want my guests to feel these amazing small town vibes as they walk in,” she expressed.

Now, following months of preparation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Alessia Patisserie & Cafe will begin welcoming customers toward the end of next week. When it opens, Guehr and her Sous-chef Jordan Pilarski will present a wide selection of handcrafted pastries, including croissants, muffins, scones, breads, entremets, chocolates, and more. Pilarski joins the cafe’s team after working for the Ritz-Carlton Bacara and being the Food Network season three Spring Baking Championship winner.

Coffee Roasters, as well as offer a more savory breakfast and lunch menu. Guehr shared that her cafe will use local ingredients when possible, hopefully featuring local farmers in the majority of its dishes. She will also pay attention to her cafe’s sustainability and offer vegan and gluten-free options, adding to her cafe’s welcoming atmosphere.

“Our attention to detail in each ingredient is why we will stand out.” she said. “Taking the extra time to truly develop flavors, not rush methods to get things done faster. Great products take time, and the passion that Jordan and I bring to each item we create is what you can taste. We truly love what we do, and as cheesy as it sounds that’s a key ingredient.”

SB City Council Decides to Maintain Parklets and Clear Sidewalks

RAWING AN OUTPOURING OF SANTA BARBARA BUSINESS OWNERS AND RESIDENTS, the Santa Barbara City Council discussed the future of local outdoor parklets and enclosures this week during its June 22nd meeting. Yet after reviewing multiple options, including forbidding new parklets and requiring existing enclosures to meet aesthetic guidelines, Council ultimately decided to maintain the spaces’ current status quo. However, council members did agree that previously unapproved sidewalk operations should be cleared to allow for greater accessibility.

“We’re in the experimental phase,” said Councilmember Kristen Sneddon. “I like experiments. I think this is a rare period of time where we don’t have to be quite so bogged down by some of our more formal processes... The one place that we really can’t experiment with is ADA compliance. It’s inexcusable that we continue to ignore that, and I think we can still promote businesses being open but clear of the sidewalks.”

ITH RECENT COVID RESTRICTIONS LIFTING, The Santa Barbara Police Department is anticipating an increase in activity in the downtown corridor and State Street Promenade. Starting immediately, there will be additional officers directly assigned to these areas on an indefinite basis. These officers will be assigned to foot patrol, bicycle patrol, and/or motorcycle patrol to improve safety for all community members.

Officers will be on duty in the downtown corridor seven days a week, between the hours of 10am to 8pm Sunday through Tuesday, and 10am - 3am Wednesday through Saturday. Officers assigned to work during the evening hours will be primarily responsible for handling night life issues that may stem from the re-opening of many bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, according to a release from the Department..

“Public safety is our number one goal, we want everyone to enjoy Downtown and the Promenade, now that most pandemic restrictions have been lifted and a sense of normalcy is returning to our community,” the notice continued.

City staff presented a number of proposed changes to be applied across State Street and the City. Primarily, their suggestions included banning new installations of parklets off State Street, preventing new, fixed enclosures on State Street, and ensuring that all City sidewalks be cleared of items that are not part of a dining area approved under the city’s outdoor dining license program. City staff explained that these recommendations derived from feelings that businesses interested in placing parklets have already done so, as well as the ongoing difficulty to maintain accessibility amidst outdoor dining in the public right of way.

Beyond this, city staff further recommended that parklets and enclosures remove all overhead elements, save for umbrellas. On State Street, it was proposed that existing as well as new, moveable enclosures meet a more rigorous set of aesthetic guidelines by July 22nd. These guidelines include screening enclosures with plants, adhering to approved color schemes, and refraining from using plastic patio furniture or indoor furniture.

City Council members responded with hesitancy to the majority of these proposals, with Councilmember Alejandra Gutierrez voicing that she opposed banning new parklets as many community members still do not feel comfortable dining inside, and some business owners were not previously able to afford parklet construction. Other council members further expressed that the future of downtown Santa

Barbara is still unfolding, and that now is not the time to place temporary regulations on recovering businesses.

“It’s really remarkable what our local businesses have been able to accomplish this past year,” expressed Councilmember Meagan Harmon, pointing to the newfound energy the downtown area holds. “The only way to dampen that energy with certainty... is to layer interim guideline on top of interim regulation on top of interim guideline without any clear path forward.”

However, council members did support the clearing of all sidewalk operations that were not approved prior to the pandemic in order to ensure that Santa Barbara remains accessible to all community members. Looking ahead, this means that as of July 9th, if a previously unapproved business wants to offer sidewalk operations, they must go through the traditional outdoor dining license program and follow all ADA requirements.

Multiple community members commented on the need for greater enforcement of accessibility requirements, emphasizing that much of the downtown area has remained inaccessible or difficult for people with physical disabilities to navigate for over a year.

“I think the planned changes offered in the staff report have some good points, but since there has been little enforcement of any consequences for a year, giving repeat violators no reason to comply, the City needs to seriously consider funding enforcements, or at least follow through on the fines and closures,” wrote Jim Marston, Chairman of the City’s Access Advisory Committee, in a statement to City Council.

Many local business owners also spoke at the meeting, expressing frustration at city staff ’s lack of communication with local businesses in creating the proposed guidelines. Several individuals further commented on the financial strain of retroactively complying with aesthetic guidelines, while others supported the clearing of sidewalk operations to promote retail businesses’ visibility and foot traffic.

“I encourage you to hold off on immediate decisions, as the community was only notified about this this past week and your decision-making will affect businesses across the board and the investments of those business owners,” said Robin Elander, Executive Director for Downtown Santa Barbara.

Going forward, save for the clearing of previously unapproved sidewalk operations, local parklets and enclosures will continue business as usual.

Interviews for the State Street Advisory Committee, which will help create a Downtown State Street Area Master Plan, are ongoing.

ERCADO DE LA GUERRA WILL RETURN TO THIS YEAR’S FIESTA it was announced at a gathering of local non-profit leaders, Old Spanish Days Santa Barbara officials, and members of the local dance community.

Sidelined last year due to the restrictions, Mercado De La Guerra has been a part of Fiesta since the early days. Now in its 97th year, Fiesta in Santa Barbara offers a variety of free events to the public during the first weekend of August. No event exemplifies everything that is Fiesta more than the Mercado. From food to song and dance to providing a platform for local non-profits to earn their important annual operating revenues, Mercado De La Guerra is truly the heart of Fiesta.

“As an organization, we are thrilled to be bringing Mercado De La Guerra back to the community,” said 2021 Old Spanish Days Fiesta La Presidenta Stephanie Petlow. “Fiesta is for the community, and the Mercado is an important event for the entire public to enjoy.”

As is tradition, Mercado De La Guerra will run from 11am to 10pm the Wednesday of Fiesta, August 4th through Saturday, August 8th.

Long-time Mercado and Fiesta sponsor Rincon Broadcasting will again be providing entertainment through its radio stations KTYD, KLTE, and Radio Bronco. In addition, on Thursday of Fiesta, Flamenco dancers will perform with live music from 12 to 4pm.

The official ribbon cutting for Fiesta 2021 will take place on Wednesday, August 4th at 10:45am at Mercado De La Guerra.

s stages went dark

amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, computer screens across Santa Barbara and the nation lit up with the Marjorie Luke Theatre’s Virtual Concert Series. Born out of a desire to give back to the community while financially maintaining the theatre, the Virtual Concert Series offers viewers the chance to enjoy eight free, high-quality performances from the comfort of their homes.

Now, as in-person events begin to return, the theatre reflects on how this innovative series saved it from closure as well as supported artists and the community.

Virtual Concert Series Helps Save Marjorie Luke Theatre

“We were relieved and pleased we could offer something free to the community and at the same time we could keep people hired and engaged, including our own staff,” said Rod Lathim, President Emeritus of the Marjorie Luke Theatre Board of Directors.

A nonprofit community venue, over 60 percent of the Marjorie Luke Theatre’s income depends on rental income. Consequently, the disappearance of this critical source of income amidst the pandemic forced the theatre to confront the viability of its survival.

However, inspired by the rise of concerts being held via Zoom and livestreams, yet unimpressed with their quality, Lathim proposed that the theatre put their own spin on the realm of virtual performances.

“I used to watch The Sonny and Cher Hour, and The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and Carol Burnett, and all these shows that had music and spoken word, and in some cases comedy and guest artists, and I went to tapings of those shows as a kid in LA,” explained Lathim. “So I was always intrigued by the idea of what you could create not being rushed or under the gun of doing a live feed.”

“It was a gift back to the community at a time when many people were strapped for money because they lost work, they were trying to feed their families, and everybody was stuck at home,” shared Lathim. “Gifting people at a time like that very much seemed like the right thing to do.”

Lathim volunteered to produce the Virtual Concert Series pro bono, suggesting that the performances be pre-recorded and edited to maximize their quality. Together, he and his fellow board members helped fundraise and gain sponsors for the series, ultimately raising over $100,000 to pay performing artists, technicians, and theatre staff. As a result, while its staff members had to work reduced hours for a time, the Marjorie Luke Theatre was able to keep operating and avoid furloughing staff.

Moreover, with production costs covered, the Marjorie Luke Theatre was able to present the entirety of its Virtual Concert Series to viewers for free. In doing so, the theatre aimed to not only remain engaged with the community, but offer accessible, much-needed entertainment in a time of unprecedented hardship.

Across its eight performances, the Virtual Concert Series supports a diverse selection of local artists and performance genres, including music from Latin America, China, and African American and Latinx culture, as well as Pacific Rim spoken word. Six of these concerts were filmed live on the Marjorie Luke Theatre stage, including performances by singer/songwriters Mendeleyev, Jackson Gillies, and Dakota Lotus, collaborations with Pianos on State Street and On the Verge Theatre Festival, and a showcase of over 30 artists titled Resonance.

The remaining installments are vintage performances, including Seraphonium, a recording of 45 artists singing the songs of Monte Schulz at the Marjorie Luke Theatre in 2015. There is also a recording of the play Storm Reading, which features actor, playwright, and disability culture icon Neil Marcus, and was directed and produced

by Lathim in the 1980s. It was later filmed for television in 1996.

The series has been met with great support, gaining over 400,000 views across Santa Barbara, the United States, and even internationally since September. Locally, community members have voiced comments of gratitude and appreciation for the Marjorie Luke Theatre’s efforts to engage the community through performances.

“I feel very strongly about the arts and their ability to heal, to inspire, to give people emotional balance, keep people communicating, sharing stories, sharing music, sharing culture that’s relevant to all of the different pockets of different cultural communities we have in Santa Barbara,” shared Lathim. “We really are the people’s theatre, and this concert series really reflected that in a really positive way.”

N A LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON when activities at the harbor began to slow down after the Father’s Day weekend I was greeted with a big surprise! For the first time in what seemed like forever there was no line in front of the Santa Barbara Fish Company. Never had there been a time without a crowd in front of the building. An opportunity such as this simply called my name so, camera in hand, I headed straight for the open market to find out what all those happy seafood lovers craved.

Despite the late hour customers still crowded the store but I was helped by James Borghesani who listened to my questions juggling his way around the crowd with a great big smile. “What I can tell you is that this successful operation was established by the owner, Brian Colgate, who has a long history with fishing and the fisherman here in Santa Barbara.” He added, “The SB Fish Company not only serves the customers that come into the market but many of the restaurants in the area.” Jamie suggested that I visit their website for information I might find helpful, the portal for customers to chat electronically, and order seafood online to be delivered to the front door.

Located in the middle of some of the richest fishing grounds in California, Santa Barbara has had a long history of fishing and diving.

With the meeting of the warmer southern and cooler northern waters in Southern California, more than 500 species of fish live or migrate off the South Coast. The ocean near Point Conception is a unique and rich habitat: the area between Point Conception and the Santa Barbara Channel serve as spawning grounds for dozens of species of commercial fish and shellfish year-round. The Santa Barbara harbor’s commercial fleet today includes over one hundred boats, one of which belonged to Brian Colgate’s father, John, a diver and longtime fisherman.

An expert, the senior Colgate was also one of the original founders of The Shellfish Co. on Stearns Wharf and knew the restaurant business from the inside out. Brian Colgate started by working in the cutting room where he learned about handling the fish, processing volume orders and the basics of running a business. As the owner of his own enterprise, the Santa Barbara Fish Company, Colgate brings together local fishermen and the public they serve with a staff of approximately 25. A priority is to create a happy, casual atmosphere which trickles down to the customer. The obvious success of his business and the friendly greeting I received is certainly a testament to that!

Santa Barbara’s fishermen catch six to ten million pounds of seafood annually, benefiting the economy of our local community. Wild caught sea bass, black and ling cod, yellowtail, halibut, tuna, shrimp – more than 50 species in total – are just some of the seafood available in the Channel. And the Santa Barbara Fish Company carries an ongoing variety of the daily catch. One of the market’s managers,Vicente Aguilera, explained how business changed during the COVID year. “The pandemic was actually business friendly in a big way because our local customers were at home preparing meals as opposed to going out to eat,” he shared. “That kept us surprisingly busy during the shutdown and our retail business is still a mainstay along with the restaurants.”

It seems I stumbled into yet another family owned business for this week’s column, and one that has been in operation at the harbor for close to a quarter century. From father John to son Brian, the fishing industry’s retail outlets continue to thrive with the help of their friendly staff and managers. The Santa Barbara Fish Company is open seven days a week, so stop by for the freshest catch of any day!

HE FINANCIAL MARKETS WERE SHOCKED, yes shocked, when the May Consumer Price Index for retail prices jumped 4.9 percent year-over-year. Just kidding. No one was really surprised because one year ago it wasn’t rising at all (well, just 0.22 percent), and it was predicted to rise substantially with the $4 trillion plus in government aid already being injected into companies and individuals.

It has averaged around two percent since the 1990s, per the St. Louis Fed graph that dates back to 1950. Every business economist would know this, and expect such fluctuations that rather quickly return to the longer-term average with today’s just-in-time, global supply chains that have tamed prices.

In fact, CPI inflation was rising as high as 5.5 percent annually in July 2008 during the Great Recession, before another jaw-dropping plunge to -0.32 percent in 2009. You get the drift. So who is worrying about these temporary ‘blips’ in inflation?

The financial markets, of course. They love to use other peoples’ (borrowed) money to finance their stock, bond, and commodity market transactions, if possible. And interest rates have been at rock bottom over the past year; close to zero for short-term rates, and the 10-year benchmark treasury yield below one percent for much of the time. It is still in a daily trading range of 1.5-1.6 percent, per the below FRED graph.

This is one reason market indexes have been at record highs, and why they gyrate so wildly on almost a daily basis, as traders try to guess what the Fed will do next in its almost daily pronouncements on when they might allow short-term interest rates to rise.

Consumers don’t have to worry so much, because it has been extremely difficult for the Federal Reserve, or anyone else, to keep CPI inflation above two percent, especially during this once in a 100-year coronavirus pandemic. Inflation below that range has invariably meant there is too little aggregate demand—consumers aren’t buying, investors aren’t investing, and banks aren’t lending.

CEPR’s Dean Baker just remarked on what has boosted inflation of late. It’s gasoline prices and insurance rates spiking because of the sudden surge in travel, as consumers bust out of their prolonged at home hibernation.

“Overall, the story this month is overwhelmingly that bounce back inflation was 100 percent predictable, coupled with soaring car prices (both new and used) due to temporary shortages.

There’s not much here to get excited about,” he said.

were major factors, rising 1.6 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively. The jump in used and new car prices added 0.3 percentage points to the inflation rate for the month.”

And, he continues: Even though it’s hard to get good help, restaurant prices outpaced food prices by just 0.1 percentage points over the last three months, 1.0 percent to 0.9 percent.

The medical care index fell 0.1 percent in May, up just 0.9 percent over last year. Drug prices were flat, down 1.9 percent over last year.

Rent indexes: rental property increased just 0.2 percent; owner equivalent rent rose 0.3 percent in May. Apparel prices jumped 1.2 percent in May, car insurance 0.7 percent, and air fares 7.0 percent.

The indexes are respectively 2.2 percent, 0.2 percent, and 6.3 percent below the February 2020 level.

It is also why the housing market is booming. Interest rates are this low because bond traders see very little danger of longer-term inflation, and the Fed promising to hold short-term rates close to zero for at least one more year.

Emergency Business Assistance Program Application Period to Close June 30th

In support of our community, the County of Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Foundation, has launched the Emergency Business Assistance Grant Program. With an application deadline of June 30th, eligible microenterprise businesses are able to apply for up to $10,000 in assistance, while eligible small businesses may apply for up to $25,000.

“This program is another COVID-19 relief partnership like, Santa Barbara Better Together Fund and Elaine F. Stepanek Foundation Restaurant Fund, that are providing extra relief to businesses challenged by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Jessica Sanchez, Director of Donor Relations at the Santa Barbara Foundation. “We are happy to work with the County of Santa Barbara to provide such important support to our local businesses that are at the center of our county’s economy.”

This funding was allocated by the Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), and presented to the County with the purpose of responding to the impacts of the pandemic. Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation Plans In-Person Picnic for June 26th

T

he Teddy Bear Picnic, a beautiful outdoor picnic lunch on the upper lawn of the newly reopened Montecito Club, will be a day to remember, as the team at Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF) host its first in-person gathering on Saturday, June 26th in over a year. With the Governor’s announcement of a June 15th reopen date in mind, the local non-profit that cancelled numerous fundraising events in 2020, is looking forward to greeting guests. Tickets for the event are $200 for two guests, with each couple receiving their own picnic blanket and parasol. Everyone will be encouraged to spread out their blankets to enjoy their lunch including paninis, salads, wine, snacks, and dessert.

Guests can also enjoy activites including croquet, bocce, corn hole, and tarot card readings, or enjoy henna tattoos, balloon artists, and music.

Also available via Montecito Club will be a sledding hill, pickleball, basketball, and volleyball.

A limited number of tickets will be sold in order to ensure safe social distancing, and this event is expected to sell out quickly. Tickets are available at TeddyBearCancerFoundation. org/Events.

Co-chairing the Teddy Bear Picnic will be Maria Wilson and Sofie Langhorne, both of whom sit on TBCF’s board of directors and both are event sponsors. Ginni Dreier will serve as honorary chair. The event committee includes Matt Fish, Jamie Hansen, Sheela Hunt, Maria Long, Debbie Neer, and Tara Zanecki. In 2020 TBCF reduced their operating budget in response to the pandemic; however, the need for services significantly increased.

“Our supporters and donors really came through for our families last year with gift cards, grocery card, deliveries, financial support. and increased volunteerism. It was really inspiring,” Langhorne noted.

And, despite their reduced budget, TBCF was able to continue to serve every family that requested support.

SB Mission Scholars Achieve 100 Percent Four-Year College Enrollment

ESPITE BEING CONFRONTED WITH UNPRECEDENTED HARDSHIPS AMIDST THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, all 18 members of the Class of 2021 Mission Scholars program have achieved enrollment in four-year colleges. Operating with the support of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, the program supports high-achieving, low-income students in their efforts to attend college by providing mentorship, academic admissions counseling, and more.

“This is a big part of our core mission,” said Cassie Lancaster, Executive Director of the program, which operates under the aegis of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation. “To give high-achieving, low-income students the support they need to meet their full potential before, during, and after college.

It’s exhilarating to see every single one of our Scholars succeed in this first crucial step.”

This is the second consecutive year all Mission Scholars have gone on to four-year colleges, with last year witnessing the success of the program’s inaugural cohort. Moreover, in both years over 80% of the students’ entire cost of college attendance is covered by scholarships and grants, with a majority of that funding deriving from merit aid. Here In LA, Good News Keeps Coming ITH MULTIPLE LOCATIONS WORLDWIDE, 17 according to my latest account, Gagosian added one more gallery to his sprawling cultural empire. In addition to the Beverly Hills gallery, Gagosian made arrangements with Marciano Art Foundation at the former Masonic Temple location on Wilshire Blvd. The first exhibition Gagosian presents there occupies the Grand Theater Gallery on the ground floor.

This inaugural solo exhibition is by German painter, Albert Oehlen (b. 1954).

It is an impressive presentation of his personal response to the Rothko Chapel in Houston. To emphasize this connection, Gagosian built for this exhibition an octagonal structure reflecting the layout of the Rothko Chapel.

This exhibition runs through July 24, 2021.

And, here is another expansion from downtown to midtown, the expansion that we don’t need to wait for. On Saturday, June 19th, the Iranian contemporary platform, ADVOCARTSY, opened a new gallery on N. La Cienega Blvd. in West Hollywood. Though, they continue to operate their DTLA gallery on S. San Pedro Street.

This inaugural exhibition features photographs and collages by Iranian born artist, Shadi Yousefian (b.

1978), who moved to the U.S. at the age of 16. “All of Shadi Yousefian’s work to date strives to describe her life as an immigrant and tap into a more universal experience.

Yousefian continues to systematically destroy personal artifacts such as photos, letters, film negatives, and manuscripts to capture and distill the essence of her own lived experiences.”

The exhibition runs through July 17, 2021.

Another surprising LA art scene development is the announcement by Hauser & Wirth that, in addition to their downtown complex, they are expanding to West Hollywood where they will occupy the former vintage car showroom on Santa Monica Blvd. I wonder if it might be the first indication that more galleries currently in the DTLA Arts District will be moving or expanding to midtown or even further west?

In his interview with the LA Times, Hauser & Wirth President Marc Payot said, “We really expect L.A. to come back to its full bloom after the pandemic, and this is really the next step for us. It’s first and foremost a commitment to L.A.” The new space, designed by Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects, is scheduled to open fall 2022.

Lucky for us Californians, with our low COVID cases, we are now able to safely experience art and culture in real time and in real place. This week, through June 27th, we are invited to The Other Art Fair organized

by Saatchi Art at ROW DTLA. This is a good chance for us to discover 75 independent and emerging artists hand-picked by a committee of art experts. With the prices ranging from $100 to $10,000 dollars, this art fair looks like a good place for new collectors to make smart choices.

Historic Arts District Comes Alive

Real Live Reception is the title of a collaborative reception at both 10 West Gallery and the Colette Cosentino Atelier, on June 26th from 5 to 7pm, at 10 West Anapamu Street.

On display at 10 West Gallery will be the Gallery’s Summer Solstice exhibit, which features 10 West artists: Joan Rosenberg-Dent, Marlene Struss, Diane Giles, Maria Miller, Mary Dee Thompson, Rick Doehring, Sophie MJ Cooper, James Petrucci, Patrick Hall, Daniel Linz, and Karin Aggeler.

Across the street, will be an exhibit by Colette Cosentino at 11 West Anapamu Street.

An artist-owned cooperative, 10 West Gallery is directed by founder, Jan Ziegler. The gallery is open four days a week and has a new exhibition of eleven artists every other month.

REE SUMMER CINEMA TAKES A TRIP BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN (and back in time!) with a series of nostalgic comedy and adventure flicks from the ’80s and ’90s hosted by UCSB Arts & Lectures.

Usher in summertime vibes with Be Excellent and Party On! - Movies Under the Stars in Your Cars, a fun mix of films that offers something for everyone. The films are free and will screen on Thursdays at 8:30pm from July 1st through August 12th at the West Wind Drive-In in Santa Barbara. First come, first served; gates open at 7pm. Arrive early to enjoy food trucks, concessions, entertainment, and prize drawings! DJ Darla Bea will be emceeing the pre-movie festivities and providing a curated soundtrack.

The Under Crossing has been of special interest to the city because of its function as gateway to the beach front and the flow of thousands of visitors every day. The Under Crossing was the subject of a Design Charrette hosted by the American Institute of Architects at the Community Arts Workshop. EXHIBITION OF NEW ENDEAVORS in art by the students of Ruth Ellen Hoag at REH Fine Art@ Grayspace, Aspirations runs through this week to June 27th, at 219 Gray Avenue.

“What a year! After moving to zoom for 57 weeks, my classes returned to the studio in May. It was quite evident that everyone had worked steadily and productively through the months at home and was ready to show their work to the REH GraySpace audience!” commented Ruth Ellen Hoag, Director and Curator at REH Fine Art@ Grayspace.

Participating Artists include: Eileen Bunning, Deborah Filippini, Lynn Hamilton, Pat Heller, Kathe Hines, Colleen Janeé, Marianne Kugler, Camille Lubach, Peggy Merizalde, Valiant by Kathi Scarminach Caroline Moss, Peggy Odgers, Kathi Scarminach, Richard Six, and Cynthia Waring.

“The 14 artists represented are at various stages of their art endeavors and are of all ages and walks of professional life, devoting concentrated time to the study of art and painting with a quest for individual artistic expression… many are in local art associations, have their own websites, are exhibiting regularly, winning awards, and selling their work,” Hoag continued.

The Gallery is open Fri/Sat 12 to 6; Sunday 12 to 4pm; and by appt.
