ITH VIBRANT COLOR AND AN ARRAY OF GLOWING FACES, the Mental Wellness Center is bringing its Mental Health Arts Festival back to De La Guerra Plaza on Saturday, July 16th from 11am to 3pm. The festival will showcase the artwork of local artists in mediums including painting, drawing, jewelry, poetry, sculpture, and arts and crafts. But what’s really special about the festival doesn’t end with the artwork. “It’s an opportunity for artists to display their work and showcase their talent to the community in a way that is positive, productive, and meaningful for them,” explained Darcy Keep, MWC Board Member and Administrative Director of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at Cottage Health. “Most of these artists have been exhibiting for years and years. We also get new artists who are members of the Mental Wellness Center’s Fellowship Club. The Center has an art room and members who start creating want to display their artwork.” This year’s featured Arts Festival artist is Kristine Kelly. Kelly creates fused glass artwork, mostly featuring nature scenes, and was recently awarded first place at the National Glass Expo held in Las Vegas for her depiction of a scene in Yosemite Valley. Kelly’s art is used in this year’s Art Festival poster and depicts an underwater scene made entirely of glass she has colored and shaped herself.

Keep first joined the board of directors for the MWC over 20 years ago. Her background was Artwork by members of the Fellowship Club. in advocating for people that are impacted by mental health disorders and she saw the Arts Festival as a way to build on that. “I love art, but I’m not an artist myself,” Keep said. “I’ve always been motivated to help people, especially those who are more vulnerable or less fortunate than others. It’s hard to express how much I love and admire the MWC clients. Most of us have no idea of the struggles these individuals face on a daily basis and how challenging it is to live in a world that unfortunately still stigmatizes them. While others may see their differences or limitations, we at MWC see their artistic gifts, their strengths, and their resilience.”

OR THE THIRD YEAR, Alma Rosa Winery plans to host its annual Peace of Mind—10,000 Steps in the Right Direction fundraising walk on Saturday, July 23rd, from 9am to noon on the grounds of Alma Rosa’s 628acre estate. Located just north of Santa Barbara near the town of Buellton, the 10,000 steps walk offers a tour of the property, taking walkers on a 4.5-mile there-and-back ramble through verdant wine country where Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Grenache vines grow thick with the plump fruit that has made that region so famous. Registration for the walk is $55 per participant, which will be split equally between One Mind and the Mental Wellness Center, the two organizations the Zorichs have chosen to support based on their contributions to mental health and wellness in Santa Barbara. Participants who can’t attend the walk in-person are still encouraged to register and participate virtually by going for their own simulated 10,000 step walk wherever they are located. Parking will open at 8am and the walk will begin by 9am. Some sections of the path involve rigorous quarter mile inclines, so good footwear and physical fitness are recommended for those participating in the live walk. Walkers who make it to the top of the climb can enjoy a splash of sparkling wine before making their way back to the bottom where a glass of wine (rosé, Pinot Noir, or Chardonnay), water, and other non-alcoholic refreshments will be waiting to quench each walker’s thirst. Alma Rosa Winery owners Bob and Barb Zorich conceived of the walk as a way to raise funds to support research and treatment for anxiety and depression. In its first year, the fundraiser was held virtually and raised over $144,000 in support of One Mind and the Mental Wellness Center. Last year the fundraiser raised over $100,000 for the Mental Wellness Center. This year Bob and Barb hope the walk will have its biggest year yet. Hundreds Observe Vigil for Roe v. Wade

ODAY WE MOURN, TOMORROW WE FIGHT — unified by this rallying cry, around 800 locals gathered at the Santa Barbara Courthouse on June 24th to protest the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. The 5-4 vote ends almost 50 years of federal protection for an individual’s right to have an abortion, with numerous states beginning to enact abortion restrictions as early as Friday.

“We’re here tonight because the Supreme Court has failed us,” said Jenna Tosh, President & CEO of the Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund. “Today’s decision is about more than abortion — it’s about who has power over us. Who has the authority to make decisions for us? Who controls our futures? In a country where eight in ten people believe in the right to safe and legal abortion, it is an outrage that six unelected justices have taken our freedoms away.”

People of all ages and genders surrounded the Courthouse’s archway to grieve and hear community and Planned Parenthood leaders. Many carried signs bearing messages such as “My body, my choice” and “women’s rights are human rights.”

Two locals also shared their testimonies of having an abortion, including a woman who lived in Indiana before Roe v. Wade. She ultimately had to travel to New York for an abortion.

Tosh reassured the crowd that abortion will remain legal in California, adding that this will lead to an influx of patients from other states without access. She emphasized that this decision will especially harm low-income Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color, and sets a dangerous precedent for efforts to restrict contraception and LGBTQ+ rights. This vigil marked the fourth local reproductive rights rally in the past eight months. Yet as Luz Reyes-Martín, Vice President of the Central Coast Action Fund, voiced, “Knowing this was coming does not make this moment any less devastating.”

Local leader and activist Reverend David Moore passionately encouraged the crowd to not lose heart, and to remember that the fight for reproductive and other individual rights has come a long way despite this setback. He further called for everyone to vote this November.

“Remember, we trained to take these body blows,” said Moore. “We worked out, we built the muscles to take all of this, and so instead of us despairing, instead of us losing heart, instead of us throwing in the towel and saying ‘What’s the point with America?’ Just remember that some of us are celebrating because this is the best time of our lives — we are ready to take on the challenge of standing up for women’s rights.”

90th Annual Children’s Fiesta Parade Now Accepting Entries Fun Event for Local Families & a Treasured Memory for Kids

HE CITY OF SANTA BARBARA PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING ENTRY FORMS for Children’s Fiesta Parade participation. The parade, to be held on Saturday, August 6th, is now in its 90th year, and has been a community tradition for generations. Each year, new families join families who have proudly participated in the Children’s Fiesta Parade for more than five generations.

SBCC Student Cameron Black Awarded Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

CAMERON BLACK, a Santa Barbara City College student, has received the highly competitive Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Black majored in both psychology and communications, and earned a 4.0 GPA all four semesters. He was was the SBCC Associated Student Government Vice President of Internal Affairs. Recipients of the scholarship will receive educational advising to guide them through the process of transitioning to a four-year college. Vitalant Declares Critical Blood Shortage

OMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO HELP REVERSE THE CRITICAL BLOOD SHORTAGE AND POTENTIALLY SAVE A LIFE by making an appointment to donate blood with Vitalant, a nonprofit blood service provider. In April and May, Vitalant collected about 13,000 fewer blood donations compared to the same period last year. This is added to a sharp decrease of 12 percent of new donors year over year. “Every time you donate, you help ensure a patient’s lifesaving treatment doesn’t have to be put on hold,” said Vitalant Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Dr. Ralph Vassallo. “When patient needs consistently outpace donors scheduling appointments, chances are higher a leukemia patient won’t be able to get their regular transfusion, or a transplant recipient will have their surgery delayed.” There is a critical need for donors with the most transfused blood type, type O, but donors of all blood types are needed. Santa Barbara Unified School District Hires Three New Administrators

HE SANTA BARBARA UNIFIED BOARD OF TRUSTEES HAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED the hire of three key administrators after an exhaustive recruitment and selection process. Two are promotions from within the district, while a key position at the District Office will be filled by a veteran educational leader.

Dr. Lynne Sheffield will join the district as the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary, while Dare Holdren has been named Principal at San Marcos High School, and Daniel Dupont will take over as Principal at Santa Barbara Junior High. “I am ecstatic that we have been able to identify three incredible candidates for these positions,” said Dr. Hilda Maldonado, the district’s superintendent. “Lynne will bring new ideas and a commitment to work with teachers and leaders so that every child thrives, while Dare and Daniel are both moving from assistant principal positions here at Santa Barbara Unified and take over schools that will succeed under their leadership. I’m thankful to all three for their commitment to step up and continue to serve our students and our teachers.... She has also spent time as an assistant principal, a teacher, and an adjunct professor at three different universities. Unity Shoppe Receives $20,000 Grant From Union Bank

ROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT UNITY SHOPPE will receive a boost from a recent $20,000 grant from Union Bank.

In a non-Covid year, anywhere from 1,700 to 2,000 volunteers work alongside the Unity staff.

DARE HOLDREN, a San Marcos High graduate and member of its Athletics Hall of Fame, is no stranger to Santa Barbara Unified, having spent more than 20 years in different capacities within the district. Most recently, he was the assistant principal at Dos Pueblos High, where he oversaw athletics, activities, ASB accounts and the School Leadership Team. This is also a return to campus for Holdren, who previously was a San Marcos teacher for 16 years, as ell as as the school’s Dean of Student Engagement from 2018-19. He was also the Dare Holdren school’s football coach from 2005-08, where he was named Channel League Coach of the Year in his final season at the helm. Holdren was also the Principal at Solvang School for two years. He holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Chapman University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brown University. DANIEL DUPONT comes to Santa Barbara Junior High after serving as an Assistant Principal at Santa Barbara Senior High since 2019. Mr. Dupont has eight years of experience as the Assistant Principal of Curriculum between his stint at Santa Barbara and El Dorado High School in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. His experience includes overseeing standardized testing; instituting the Seal of Biliteracy district-wide; coordinating the 504 process; overseeing Dual Enrollment; developing the master Daniel Dupont schedule; coordinating professional development time; evaluating both certificated and classified staff; and producing detailed reports. He has a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Cal State Fullerton and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from UC Santa Barbara.

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute Releases 2021 Annual Report

TO HIGHLIGHT ITS EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH DIABETES AND DELIVER RESOURCES TO THE DIABETES COMMUNITY, the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute has released its 2021 Annual Report. Notably, the institute was able to expand its research within the Artificial Pancreas and Diabetes in Pregnancy programs. “In 2021, we continued our research and engaged with 4,510 research participants and provided care for 158 women who lived with diabetes during pregnancy,” said SDRI Executive Director Ellen Goodstein. “SDRI is incredibly grateful for the philanthropic support for new ideas, new research, and the ability to continue Dr. Sansum’s legacy in diabetes research.” The report examines their 2021 multi-center study looking at the insulin use and glucose sensor metrics in pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes using continuous monitors and insulin pumps. Also, Santa Barbara’s efforts in prioritizing distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations to the Hispanic and Latino populations with Type 1 and 2 diabetes is featured in the report.

Hansten was the athletic director at Columbia College in Sonora, CA and Vice President of the Central Valley Conference Planning Board. She is involved with the CA Community Colleges Athletic Directors’ Association Management Council as a member of the Health & Wellness Committee, with a focus on student well-being. City Adopts 2023 Budget

HE CITY OF SANTA BARBARA adopted its operating and capital budget for Fiscal Year 2023, with a $156 Million General Fund budget and more than $300 Million in capital projects, last week.

The City’s budget for 2023 can be accessed and reviewed with a new online budget tool at www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov/budget. The budget tool will also be updated within the next few weeks to reflect the final actions taken by the City Council. Future financial and programmatic reporting enhancements will be considered in future budget cycles. The City of Santa Barbara collected $2.74 million in transient occupancy taxes for May 2022. TOT revenues in May 2022 were about $461,000 above May collections last year which was impacted by COVID-19 restrictions and travel advisories. Compared to the prepandemic levels of May 2019, revenues were higher by 37 percent, due to increased average daily overnight rates, which are about 46 percent higher than May 2019. The local travel industry’s steady improvement in demand for rooms has continued into the spring season as more COVID-related restrictions have been lifted. As of May, occupancy levels have continued to stabilize around pre-pandemic levels. The City has collected $28.5 million through May, the eleventh month in the City’s fiscal year. The City’s adopted TOT budget for all funds is $23.4 million, of which $19.5 million is budgeted in the General Fund. The City’s TOT tax rate is twelve percent. Ten percent goes to the City’s General Fund and the remaining teo percent goes to the Creeks/Clean Water Fund.

PALOMA ARNOLD has worked in Student Services at SBCC for over 20 years. Most recently, she worked as the Dean of Student Affairs, providing oversight for various Student Services programs including Guardian Scholars, admissions and records, financial aid, academic counseling, and more. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the Riviera Ridge School, the CalSOAP Governing Board, and Cottage Hospital’s Community Health Advisory Committee. In 2019, she was recognized as the Outstanding Administrator of the Year by Paloma Arnold the SBCC Advancing Leadership Association. She holds a M.A. in Psychology from Antioch University and a B.A. in history from UCLA.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Hosts Annual Santa Barbara Wine + Food Festival

UST OVER THE HILL FROM SANTA BARBARA, Johnny Cash used to write and play some of the world’s best country western music in his home studio in Casitas Springs, Ca. Cash’s home has just come up for sale, according to Adam McKaig, broker associate with DouglasElliman Real Estate.

The jury returned a verdict in two hours, ruling against the Stoll law firm 12-0 on every claim. The jury found that Robert Stoll had failed to perform as an attorney for Parrish and Fitzgibbons and that if any fees were owed to Stoll, they were due from now-disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti, Stoll’s prior co-counsel. The lawsuit began in 2011, after the Stoll firm, along with Eagan Avenatti and Panish Shea & Boyle had represented Parrish and Fitzgibbons in a malicious prosecution action against FLIR, their former employer. FLIR agreed to pay $39 million to settle that case including $15.4 million in attorney fees, and by the agreement of all the lawyers, wired the settlement money to the Eagan Avenatti trust account. After the settlement was paid, Avenatti refused to pay his co-counsel Stoll any attorney fees, arguing that Stoll had done no work on the case, and was looking for a hand-out. The lawyers began a vicious fight with one another, and when Stoll could not get money from Avenatti, Stoll turned on the clients, and sued them, wrongly blaming them for Avenatti’s conduct. Meanwhile, Avenatti had secretly transferred $10 million in remaining fees into his law firm’s operating account and began spending it on a luxury home, cars, jewelry, law firm expenses, and concierge services. In just over a year, Avenatti had spent all the money while assuring the clients and others it was safe in his law firm trust account.

Menchaca Chocolates:

Where Art Meets Chocolate

Menchaca, who uses responsibly-sourced cacao beans from Cahabón, Guatemala, personally makes all of the chocolate. The store offers an intimate shopping experience, as customers observe and talk with Menchaca as he prepares the very chocolate beautifully displayed around them.

Mexican and Spanish history, as well as representing herself and Pete. The founder of The Woods Art Studio, Iverson personally designs the company’s inhouse art and branding, even creating hand-painted gift boxes and custom labels for special events.

After working as a pipe fitter for over 30 years, Menchaca knew that he would follow his passion for cooking in retirement. When Iverson gave him a chocolate melanger as a birthday gift about five years ago, he quickly started experimenting, presenting homemade chocolates to friends and family. Eventually, they decided to share their chocolates with the larger community. They began participating in the waterfront’s weekly Arts & Crafts show, as well as local markets such as La Cumbre Plaza’s Crimson Holiday pop-up before selling wholesale. The company’s store and kitchen opened in El Mercado shopping plaza in February 2021.

Flavors range from pure chocolate to original combinations, such as candied ginger, monkfruit, cranberry and hazelnut, and cayenne and sea salt. With an emphasis on the cacao’s natural richness, each bar carries an authentic, almost rustic quality unique from nonhandcrafted chocolates.

This summer, she will start offering creative experiences to the larger community such as build-a- chocolate bar nights. She also plans to print maps on the bars’ wrappers to places in Santa Barbara where individuals can explore and enjoy their chocolate.

All flavors are naturally vegan, as Menchaca only uses oat milk powder for milk-based flavors. The store also offers hot chocolate and distinctive specialties, such as the ever-popular dried mangoes dipped in dark chocolate and sea salt.

Iverson and Menchaca appreciate the opportunity to provide sweet treats for locals to share with friends in or out of town, as well as serve the many tourists who visit Santa Barbara.

“It’s really fun to be a part of our city, because we were born and raised here,” said Iverson. “It’s really nice to be able to tie in everything that we love into the product.” The business provides custom chocolate for special events, wine tastings, and participates in downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursdays. HE SEASON OF SUMMER CELEBRATIONS in Santa Barbara has begun! Close to the harbor was the revival of the Solstice Parade that took place on June 25th in blazing color with costumed revelers accompanied by drums, song, and dance making their way along a new parade route. With State Street presently blocked, the parade marched north on Santa Barbara Street to Alameda Park where the weekend Solstice Festival was underway. And, as reported, the parade definitely did more than ‘Shine’, the theme for this years event. Close on the heels of the Solstice Parade will be the return, at long last, to Santa Barbara of the most celebrated of national holidays, Independence Day – and a big July 4th weekend! Our magnificent harbor and Stearns Wharf will be in full swing with activities and special events, culminating with the spectacular fireworks display in the skies over the waterfront. This is indeed a much anticipated celebration after the unwanted hiatus of almost two years thanks to the imposed restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic.

“After navigating our way through the past couple years with COVID restrictions, the Waterfront is excited to get back into the swing of things with a great 4th of July celebration. Independence Day will look more like those we know and love!” exclaimed Waterfront Department Director Mike Wiltshire. “My guess is that if you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate with a bang this Independence Day, there’s no better place than the Santa Barbara waterfront. A full slate of festive, fun, familyfriendly events and activities are planned throughout the day, including the return of live music and dance performances.” This year marks the 150th anniversary of Stearns Wharf, where restaurants and merchants will be welcoming anniversary visitors and guests along with celebrating Independence Day. American flags are already draped everywhere

in anticipation of a big weekend. Shops will have their doors open with wares on display and if you’re interested in the future, the Palm Reader might be able to give you a clue. For the kids - along with the always crowded ice cream and candy stores - there will be free face painting at 2pm. Tunes will soon follow as the local rock band Area 51 turns up their speakers at 4pm. On the subject of entertainment, at the West Beach bandstand there will be a variety of live music and dancing from noon to 8:30pm. Performers will vary from The Detar Music Review to Drifting Dimension, Sweetheart Sisters, Why Golf Why, Brandi Lentini and Band, Slideways, La Boheme dancers, Fiesta dancers, Riding Out the Storm, False Puppet, and Petty Set Go. In case anyone works up an appetite during those hours they’ll find food and vendor booths along Cabrillo Boulevard at West Beach from 11am to 9pm. Sounds pretty good, huh? The most anticipated attraction of the holiday weekend will come at its conclusion! On Monday, July 4th at 9pm the spectacular fireworks display will return to illuminate the skies above Santa Barbara harbor. The fireworks are presented by Garden State Fireworks and are sponsored by the Waterfront Department for the pleasure of our community. Lighted boats loaded with party goers and celebrants watching from the beaches and along Stearns Wharf aren’t the only ones enjoying this spectacular light show. Viewers in both the city and county are watching from vantage points up and down the coastline. As in past years you will hear oohs and aahs of appreciation coming from all directions. This is an invitation open to everyone, so get ready for the big weekend and come on down to the waterfront. In Director Wiltshire’s words, “Bring your family, friends, and be safe. Happy Fourth of July to all!”

ENTERING ON AN ADORABLE AND UNEXPECTED HERO, Knight Owl by Christopher Denise shows that anyone, with enough determination and creativity, can realize their dreams. Just published earlier this year, this heartwarming picture book follows Owl, who yearns to grow up and become a knight. He sets off for knight school, where he quickly discovers that the duties of a knight are difficult for a tiny bird. Undaunted, he achieves his dreams, and even finds a place on the Knight Night Watch — the perfect place for an owl. Yet when a hungry dragon descends upon the castle, all of Owl’s experience and training is put to the test. With its precious illustrations and endearing story, Knight Owl is a positive reminder that one does not have to change who they fundamentally are to achieve their goals. Throughout the book, Owl never wishes to be different or tries to be anything more than an owl, even when he is afraid or discouraged. Rather, he focuses on utilizing and improving skills and abilities he does have, applying his tenacity, bravery, and cleverness to be the best knight he can. Ultimately, this practice lets Owl not only succeed as a knight, but gain many friends, making Knight Owl an entertaining, meaningful story for young readers and adults alike. Bookworm Corner is a weekly column dedicated to highlighting children’s and young adult books that carry positive messages. Relaunching Semana Nautica in Santa Barbara

N OCEAN SWIM CALLED Reef & Run is one of the main features of this year’s Semana Nautica, Santa Barbara’s premier summer athletic festival, which relaunched last week after a two year break due to the pandemic. More events will follow. Swimmers from across Southern California will be competing at Los Banos del Mar pool for the Semana Nautica Swim Meet. The Santa Barbara Swim Club has hosted the event, which has been a part of the festival, for years. The Reef & Run event is committed to supporting the next generation of oceanloving swimmers through support of the Santa Barbara Junior Lifeguards program.

A World Premiere, Debussy, & Brahms

APTIVATING LISTENERS WITH BREATHTAKING PRECISION AND BEAUTY, Music Academy fellows celebrated chamber music in its highest form as they performed the x2 Series Brahms Piano Trio No. 1 Concert at the Lobero Theatre on Tuesday. Joined by renowned Academy Teaching Artists, as well as Grammy Award-winning mezzosoprano Sasha Cooke, each fellow displayed remarkable emotion and skill — letting the time-honored music of Debussy and Brahms shine alongside the world premiere of composer Tom Cipullo’s thoughtfully Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke playful Bonfire Opera. The concert opened with Claude Debussy’s Sonate pour flûte, alto et harpe, performed by Academy fellows Sophia Jean (flute) and Kaitlin Faith Miller (harp), and Teaching Artist Karen Dreyfus. Miller introduced the piece by explaining that Debussy himself called it “frighteningly mournful.” He penned it amidst World War I and his battle with cancer.

“I feel like I’m looking up to this woman in the song,” said Cooke. “I am taking this song as an opportunity to be grounded, to embrace myself as I am right now.”

Cipullo, a current Academy composer-in-residence, also voiced appreciation for the opportunity to realize the piece with Cooke, Churchwell, and Academy fellows, referring to them as “superlative musicians” in a conversation with VOICE. The composer of four operas, Cipullo shared that he enjoys injecting humor when he can into his music. “I know the music has to be fun, just like life has to be fun,” he noted. “And so we have to try and have a mix of emotions, some mixed beats, a mix of colors. Variety is, after all, the spice of life.”

The piece goes on to examine and celebrate self-expression and joy. Cooke performed the piece with flawless comic timing, starting in a conversational manner before building the song’s emotion with her soaring vocals. Sloot’s and Sze’s strings matched Cooke’s energy at every turn, with Churchwell providing dramatic or lighthearted emotion as the narrative called for.

Almond’s fervent yet gentle violin. McDonald’s piano guided the strings’ to peaks of emotion before relaxing into the work’s more methodical moments. Together, the trio exhibited their skills as individuals and as a unit. The piece gained a standing ovation from the entire theatre, the final notes lingering in listeners’ minds as they exited the Lobero Theatre. The Music Academy will celebrate Tom Cipullo by presenting The Music of Tom Cipullo at Hahn Hall at 7:30pm on Friday, July 1st. THRILL RIDE OF DIVERSE MUSICAL GENRES, local audiences were invited to one of the early highlights of this summer's music-making at the Music Academy. Held on a gentle sunlit evening at the Santa Barbara Bowl, the 2022 Community Concert featured an outstanding performance by Music Academy Fellows and the energetic conductor, Donato Cabrera. Scott Reed, the CEO of the Music Academy, welcomed the amphitheater audience and remarked that the audience was at its max with over 4,000 attendees, including 400 children. According to Reed, "The only way our community access efforts are made possible is through generous subsidy by philanthropists who believe that music has a powerful impact. We are

extremely grateful for their investment and leadership as the outcomes have all been nothing but positive. Many seniors and families tell us they’re able to attend multiple events during the Summer Festival, and we are also hearing about parents bringing children for the first time!"

The program was varied, with three main sections, in wildly different tempos and styles – challenging for any orchestral musician including Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5; Danzón No. 2, a Cuban-inspired composition from Arturo Márquez; followed by a spectacular sonic telling of Sergei Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet. Leading off with Beethoven’s seminal work, perhaps the most famed symphony in Western music, Maestro Carbrera's baton wove a spell. An experienced conductor, Carbrera is currently the Music Director of the California Symphony and the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and previously was the

Wattis Foundation Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2009-2016. Athletic and enthusiastic, Carbrera was a superb mentor for this concert, paying its outstanding salute to diverse musical styles. Cabrera addressed the music and the audience, engaging fellows between pieces to ask them to share their musical journeys with attendees. He also reassured the crowd that they should not worry about clapping at the wrong time, instead encouraging everyone to clap whenever they liked and to enjoy a genuine listening experience together.

The orchestra dove into Beethoven’s 5th, with all its iconic movements. The players in the string section were the champions of the night, along with the brass and percussion ably supporting the dynamic play. While nothing could top the bravura performance of the 5th, a surprisingly different piece followed. Danzón No. 2's Latin tempos were intoxicating and a pleasing musical contrast. With infectious rhythms calling to mind the rich musical heritage of Cuba and other diverse Latin Rythyms, Arturo Márquez’s piece was a delight from start to finish. For the spectacular finale, Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet work from the 1935-1936 Suite from Romeo and Juliet was conducted and played as a resounding epic including most of the three Acts including an excerpt from the Epilogue. The sense was that the whole story of Shakespeare’s ill-fated lovers was told within the dramatic movements. Here the orchestra, in top form, revved up the excitement, sadness, and romance of Prokofiev. This precise, booming, and dramatically tensioned ballet was a perfect

Siri Storheim

VOCATIVE MUSIC AND ADVOCACY have inspired horn player Siri Storheim to expand her horizons this summer as a Music Academy Fellow. She hales from Bergen, Vestland, Norway. In pursuit of her dream, Storheim earned a master’s degree from University of Southern California Thornton School of Music studying side-by-side with American soloist, Julie Landsman. As a natural-born performer, Stornheim spreads her love and knowledge of music as a a horn instructor in the Østensjø school band. To see Storheim’s artistry live, attend the Granada Theatre on July 2nd at 7:30pm, where she will perform Mahler’s Titan with the Music Academy Orchestra. She agreed to answer four questions

for readers about her musical experiences. VOICE: What first inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to pursue music?

Siri Storheim: No one in my family plays music, but my parents were really great at bringing me and my brother to concerts and theater, and in general exposing us to music. From an early age, music touched me in a powerful way. It is these emotions I still seek - the beauty, sorrow, and joy that music can evoke inspires me. Advocating for the important role of music in our society was also a drive for me to pursue music professionally. VOICE: What do you most enjoy about studying at the Music Academy?

Storheim: I enjoy being immersed in music and surrounded by so many inspiring people. I also love that Music Academy is open minded

about pursuing different paths in the industry, and I’m enjoying the Innovation Institute a lot. Being close to nature gives me a lot of joy, energy, and inspiration, so I really appreciate the location. VOICE: What do you find fulfilling about performing?

Storheim: I truly love to perform for an audience, and for me it’s all about the communication - you’ve got to have something to say. Sharing the energy and making a connection is the best experience in the world. VOICE: What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Storheim: So many things! I have a performance of the Mozart quintet for winds and piano on July 6th. This is one I really look forward to because it’s simply a fantastic piece, which my colleagues and I have a lot of fun playing.

This year's assembled musicians were rewarded with wall-to-wall enthusiasm from the Santa Barbara audience, who were on their feet to thank the performers. EEKLY INITIAL UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS are holding at the lowest level since 1970, which is a sign of an extremely tight labor market. In the week ending June 18th, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 229,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week’s revised level, said the Dept. of Labor. It dipped below 200,000 claims once before in 1999 just before the COVID-19 pandemic, per Calculated Risk’s graph.

In fact, the latest JOLTS report showed there were still 11.4 million job vacancies over the past two months. Most headlines touted that the 11.4 million job openings in May as a “severe” drop from 11.9 million vacancies in April, but that wasn’t a sign of weakness. The 11.9 million April number was revised from the original estimate of 11.4 million, which really meant that April to May job vacancies were in essence unchanged showing openings and new hires (6.6 million) were still at record levels.

The Fed’s June Open Market Committee press release was optimistic about the prospects for continued growth, explaining that, “Overall economic activity appears to have picked up after edging down in the first quarter. Job gains have been robust in

recent months, and the unemployment rate has remained low. [But] Inflation remains elevated, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher energy prices, and broader price pressures.” We must now wait to see what the Fed’s push to raise interest rates will do to future growth.

Baz Luhrmann’s new film

NLEASHED ACROSS FILM THEATERS THIS LAST WEEKEND, Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann's visually compelling biography of Elvis is entertaining on multiple levels. A high-flying rock and roll biography with early circus and gospel tent scenes, the film tells the story of the iconic and evolving Elvis. Director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby) presents a cacophony of colors and camera movement that lends a swirling richness to the film. The movie is at its best as it illustrates Elvis’ early years, before his two-year stint as a GI stationed at a U.S. airbase in Germany. The film revs up again during his preparation and performance of the Elvis Comeback Special for TV that launched his famed Vegas act in the late 1960s after his

movie career had lost its luster. But the narrative pace slows and stalls with a bewildering sequence exploring the dark weave of Colonel Parker, Elvis’s manager. The filmmaker, in all probability, was attempting to portray the hidden crevices of Elvis’ career. Outside of those choices, the screen full of carnival imagery and splashy costumes sparked the film upward highlighting his engaging showmanship and bravado.

The strong cast is headed by an energized performance from the Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) playing the title character. The cast also includes Tom Hanks offering a strange European accent as the Netherlands-born Colonel Tom Parker. The film also offers a strong supporting cast, even in the briefest roles, including Olivia De Jonge as a credible Priscilla Presley and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Power of the Dog) as Hank Snow’s impressionable son. The film also features a charismatic cameos from Alton Mason as a young Little Richard and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King in some of the most stylish scenes, set within a historical Memphis nightclub fantasy sequence.

The eye-fetching production design was from the adept Baz collaborators Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby) along with art director Karen Murphy. At any Baz Luhrmann movie the music is expected to be surprising and the movie includes vocals by Doja Cat, the Italian band Måneskin with Kacy Musgraves, and the sounds of electronica star Diplo, along with recordings of Elvis Echoes of the timeless Faust combined with vocals by star Austin legend (i.e. success at a price), hints Butler. Having seen and heard this of the original Star Trek TV series, screening at Santa Barbara’s Riviera Alton Mason as Little Richard an emerging disco era with all the Theatre, there may be not a better surrounding artificiality, and a sound experience anywhere in the scene on a Ferris Wheel, reminiscent of Orson Welles state. Elvis is, on the whole, an engaging experience. as a mirthfully evil Harry Lime that recalls 1949’s The Third Man are all to be found within Elvis. There are also Robert F. Summer Solstice

Shines Downtown!

OLORFULLY-COSTUMED DANCERS, FUN FLOATS, AND MUSIC SWEPT THROUGH DOWNTOWN last weekend as thousands of Santa Barbara locals and visitors partied at the first full Summer Solstice Celebration in three years. Themed “Shine,” the parade and festival marked the official beginning of summertime, all while celebrating community creativity and togetherness.

A Santa Barbara tradition for 48 years, Solstice invites the entire community, from professional artists to people who have never picked up a paintbrush, to exercise their creative muscles and build innovative floats and outfits for each summer’s parade. This year was no different, with dozens of volunteers working out of the Community Arts Workshop for weeks leading up to the celebration. The festivities kicked off Friday afternoon at Alameda Park, where the Summer Solstice Festival hosted local vendors, food tents, and a beer and wine garden. A line-up of talented bands provided a lively concert for attendees to enjoy while exploring the festival. Early Saturday morning, families and individuals started setting up chairs and blankets along Santa Barbara Street in anticipation for the Summer Solstice Parade at noon. This marked the first time the parade was held on Santa Barbara Street due to the new State Street Promenade. Excitement ran high among the crowd, with children smashing confetti eggs and blowing bubbles as they waited. With a burst of music and cheers, vibrant papier-mâché creatures, balloons, and beautifully constructed floats — all handmade and peoplepowered — made their way up the street. Floats featured giant crabs surrounded by treasure, elephants, fairytale scenes, and abstract designs, all culminating in a giant flaming heart balloon filled with dancing people.

Dance groups, martial artists, and musicians walked between floats, encouraging the crowd to dance and clap along. Several individuals decorated bicycles and skateboards to resemble butterflies, while others rode “rockets” and a giant guinea pig. Eventually, the floats reached Alameda Park, where locals continued admiring their artistry while eating or shopping at the Summer Solstice Festival. Musicians rocked the festival stage long into the night, securing this Summer Solstice Celebration as a comeback well worth waiting for.

Tenacity To Open at Silo118

FIRST LOOK AT Tenacity, an art exhibition about introspection by Toni Scott, a “descendent of Africans, Europeans, and indigenous first peoples in the America,” will take place at Silo118 Gallery when it opens July 1st. Informing her work is her indigenous heritage. “I’m a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation and Island in the Sea, Indigo by Tony Scott a descendant of emancipated African Americans – enslaved on three plantations in the South. My European ancestors arrived before the Mayflower, and later joined the pilgrimage of deliberate New World colonists,” commented Scott. With this multi-generational history, it’s easy to understand that critical to Scott’s work is the advancement of understanding between cultures with the hope of inspiring a deeper historic consciousness about resilience, redemption, and hope.

Amid Roe Furor, Dem Women of SB County Mark 50 Years with Rep. Katie Porter’s Call to Action By Suzanne Cohen and Laura Capps

For five decades, this grassroots, all-volunteer organization has impacted local politics, registered voters and helped dozens of women run for, and win, elected office. While our focus for 50 years often has been support for Democratic candidates, the organization also has been deeply involved in collaborations with values-aligned community partners to advance important issues like gun violence prevention, the Equal Rights Amendment, social justice policies, voting rights, marriage equality, and protecting a woman’s right to choose The timing of the gathering, which brought 300 community members together at the Hilton Beachfront Resort, could not have been more congruous and urgent: Two days before, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision, rolling back the rights of women by half-a-century. Congresswoman Porter, the keynote speaker at the commemorative event, delivered a tough but motivating message, pushing us to hold our leaders and people in power continually accountable by asking tough questions and demanding more than the status quo. “Not good enough,” is the mantra that drives her agenda. Porter regaled the crowd by recounting how she took on the CEO of JP Morgan Chase, Jamie Diamond, merely by asking him during a congressional hearing how a teller in one of his thousands of banks could live off of the paltry salary – $16.50 per

Her response: “That’s not good enough.” In 2020, Porter’s relentless line of “not-good-enough” questioning of the thenDirector of the Centers for Disease Control led to free Covid-tests for all Americans, as detailed by the Washington Post. On the Roe v. Wade decision, the Harvard Law graduate and UC Irvine law professor reminded us that as devastating and deadly as the ruling is, the Supreme Court did not ban abortion but rather ruled that it is up to us in the states to forge the rights we believe are constitutional. The responsibility now is on state and local governments to expand access to reproductive services to those beyond our borders – while taking bold measures to strengthen long-settled rights which now are in jeopardy, such as gay marriage and access to contraception. The overarching message for the hundreds of members of Democratic Women: as proud as we are of the progress we’ve made, our work is far from complete. In fact, it is now more important than ever. We stand on the shoulders of many consequential and dynamic leaders and mentors, many of whom joined on Saturday, including state Senator Monique Limón (who introduced Porter) ; and former Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, who emceed – and some of whom have passed on: Mary Jo Miles, Sarah Shoresman, Betty Stephens, Harriet Phillips, Selma Rubin, Gary K. Hart, Ghita Ginsberg, and Naomi Schwartz. There is one message we carry forward into the next 50 years, inspired by Katie Porter and determined to protect and expand the rights of women and all people: “Millions of girls and women will one day carry the banner, proving once again, one woman does make a difference, two women can cause a helluva commotion, and united we will be heard, we will be seen, we will not be stopped!” Join the movement, all are welcome. A Stage For The Whole Community

Renovation of the Band Shell will revitalize Plaza del Mar for music, drama, dance, and celebratory events. As a public park, the City provides low-cost access for non-profit organizations that serve a broad cross-section of the community.

Project Partners And Funding

The PARC Foundation The Parks and Recreation Community (PARC) Foundation is partnered with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to achieve Band Shell renovation. All the funding needed to complete the project is $45,000.

A Parks and Recreation Department and Parc Foundation Project Established as a City park in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and outdoor gatherings. The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band.
