“We want a mixture of street food and also things that you can take home to your family and have on a family dinner night,” shared co-owner Hitesh Ambalal, who commutes from Los Angeles. “We really hope that people get an understanding of what this food is supposed to taste like, what this street food is supposed to be.”

“I think that ultimately what keeps us going is that we have hospitality in our bones — and I know that sounds kind of cliche, but it really is true,” explained Ambalal.

“We’re so meticulous about how much effort and time goes into the food and the service.”

Drawn by Santa Barbara’s welcoming community and vibrant downtown, Ambalal and Patel knew State Street was ideal for their next restaurant.

All of these meals are courtesy of Taza’s hardworking team of local chefs Steven Tenoso, Jacob Hunt, and Rusty Cummings who ensure Taza lives up to its name as the Arabic word for “fresh” by preparing all dishes in-house. Ambalal voiced appreciation for his team’s knowledge of the area, and their ongoing dedication.

“We own the place, but we’re certainly not the heart and soul,” said Ambalal. “That comes from those guys in there.”

In addition to introducing new cuisine, Taza meets State’s need for late-night street food, serving into the wee hours of the morning every day. Customers can enjoy their meals, which are mainly served to-go, while strolling the promenade. Or, they can grab a seat in Taza’s casual location, featuring an open kitchen, booths, and a wall declaring there’s “nothin’ warma than a chicken shawarma.”

Taza plans to host live local musicians multiple nights a week. Later this month, Taza will expand its hours to serve lunch beginning at 11am. Ambalal and Patel also intend to eventually offer catering, as well as open additional Taza locations.

Music Academy Festival Orchestra

Mahler’s First Symphony Inspires A Heroic Musical Journey OMPLEX AND EMOTIONALLY SOPHISTICATED, Gustav Mahler’s first symphony was brought to life by the Music Academy Festival Orchestra under the direction of Finnish Maestro Hannu Lintu on Saturday, July 2nd.

The symphony is an amazing work of art, created when Mahler was just 29. Regardless of what inspired the composer, this audience was gifted a wonderful performance with plentiful and memorable solos.

Lintu’s confidence, suave attention to detail, and understanding of the piece drew an exciting response from this orchestra. The partnership and collaboration created far more than a “tone poem in symphonic form.” The horns were blessed with good intonation and the double bass solo continues to echo thoughtfully and with gravity.

This performance continues the Music Academy Orchestra’s worthy journey through important and great musical works. The opening piece of the evening was composed

by Jean Sibelius and called Oceanides (Finnish title: Aallottaret, translated to English as

Nymphs of the Waves or Spirits of the Waves.

The reflection on the moods of the ocean were well taken by Santa Barbara’s audience by the sea. It was a fitting prelude to the heroic journey of Mahler’s Titan.

Fortunate indeed is the annual Music Academy Festival to have Lintu bring his expertise to the podium at the Granada.

His musical background includes studies of piano and cello at both the Turku Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated with honors in 1996.

He also studied conduction with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy. In 1994 he took first prize at the Nordic Conducting Competition in Bergen.

In August 2021 Hannu Lintu began his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He recently completed his eighth and final season as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor. In the upcoming 2021/22 season, Lintu will make his highly anticipated debut with Opéra national de Paris, conducting Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer. He lives in Helsinki.

The Academy Festival Orchestra will next perform Prokofievs’ Classical Symphony on July 11th, directed by Teddy Abrams, at Hahn Hall.

University of California Purchases QAD Campus for $104 Million

S

TRETCHING 29 ACRES WITH STUNNING OCEAN VIEWS, the former campus of software company QAD now belongs to the University of California.

The purchase price was $104 million, made by UC Investments, which manages the University of California’s investment funds. No official plans for the property have been announced.

QAD announced it would sell its campus, which is located by Summerland at 100 and 101 Innovation Place, in May. The move came following QAD’s decision to focus on increased remote work practices and relocate to a smaller local space.

According to Peter Rupert, Director of the UCSB Economic Forecast Project and an economics professor at UCSB, Gene Deering, a principal at Radius Commercial Real Estate, discussed the property’s availability at the Economic Forecast Project Economic Summit in May. Jagdeep Singh Bachher, Chief Investment Officer and Vice President of Investments of UC Investments, was also a speaker at the summit at Rupert’s invitation. He was immediately intrigued by the opportunity to purchase the QAD campus.

“After the event, we went to lunch and on the way said he really wanted to see the property,” Rupert explained. “We talked with Gene at lunch and they indeed went to look at the property. Jagdeep realized that it was really a unique piece of property on the

Daughter of Melia Moore and granddaughter of Joann Mermis, Moore is a second generation Santa Barbaran. She has danced since the age of two, going on to dance with several local studios. Currently, she dances with Santa Barbara Dance Arts. She has appeared many years at the Granada Theatre in The Nutcracker. She dances many different styles of dance, including tap, jazz, ballet, and Shaundie Moore hip hop, also competing with a competitive dance team. Moore will be studying all styles of dance during the summer program.

SB City Hall Announces New Hours

S OF TUESDAY, JULY 5TH, the doors to City Hall will be unlocked at 9am and locked at 3pm. City Hall is open daily, Monday through Friday, with the exception of closures every other Friday and federal holidays.

Doors will remain unlocked until 5:30pm (or later) on days when City Council is meeting or a public meeting is being held in Council Chambers. A Downtown Ambassador will be stationed in the lobby from 9am to 3pm daily, to assist visitors entering City Hall.

Signage, noting the updated operating hours, will be posted on the front doors.

SB County Celebrates Recycled Water Distribution to Waller Park

ECYCLED WATER WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO WALLER PARK IN SANTA MARIA following Santa Barbara County’s recent completion of the Laguna County Sanitation District Recycled Water Distribution Project. This project delivers water over a 3.5-mile pipeline of recycled water from the Wastewater Reclamation Facility to a one million gallon tank at the park.

JACK PETERSON, a Dos Pueblos High School graduate, has been awarded a scholarship from the Santa Barbara Wireless Foundation and the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club. The first recipient of this scholarship, Peterson is a certified Mission Radio Operator for the Civil Air Patrol, a member of the Cyber Patriot youth security program, and a participant in the EAA Young Eagles program. He plans on attending the aerospace program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this fall. Waller Park includes 65 acres of irrigated turf that uses 84 million gallons of water each year. The $5 million project started by Raminha Construction Inc. will save water and money by reducing the park’s groundwater use. Laguna County Sanitation District funded this project along with a $2 million grant made by the State Department of Water Resources.

LAYING THE PIANO FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE AGE OF FOUR, Music Academy Oboe Fellow Bobby Nunes knew that he was born to leave his mark on the world of music. Nunes believes that live music is a crucial contribution to humanity, and he dedicates each of his performances to forming a connection with his audience.

Nunes earned his bachelor’s degree from The Julliard School, was named winner in the 2018 Juilliard Oboe and 2021 Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competitions before joining the Music Academy, where he has quickly made friends with the other oboe fellows.

Nunes is participating in the Academy’s Oboe Masterclasses which continue through August 5th. See him at Lehmann Hall on Friday, July 15th at 3:30pm.

Nunes answered VOICE’s questions so readers can “meet a fellow.”

VOICE: What first inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to pursue music?

Nunes: For as long as I can remember, hearing orchestral music inspired a very special feeling in me. My grandmother shared this love for music, and taught me to play basic piano when I was around four years old. On some level, it was her piano melodies filling my childhood home that inspired me to play myself.

That being said, I think I had an innate desire to dive into the world of music from the beginning, and I was going to make it happen one way or another! As time goes on, and humans are forced further into a world increasingly artificial and technology-based, the

S A "SOCIAL SCULPTOR," solo piano fellow Angie Zhang feels her called as a musician to draw people together in celebration of the human spirit. Zhang also has a deep passion for historical instruments and finds beauty in incorporating voices from multiple generations in her music.

A Juilliard graduate, Zhang operates her own in-person and global online studio offering professional piano lessons to people of all ages.

Catch her next Music Academy appearance July 8th at 1:30pm in Hahn Hall, when she will participate in the Solo Piano Masterclass led by Jeremy Denk.

Zhang took a moment to answer a few questions for VOICE readers:

VOICE: What first inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to pursue music?

Zhang: When I realized that I could truly make an impact and difference in the world with my music-making and the friendships that blossomed from it, I knew that music was my calling. As a social sculptor, I enjoy bringing people who would otherwise have a very slim chance of meeting to create a new experience and strike up a conversation.

There have been so many instances in my life where the shared love of music has resulted in so many shared moments of awe, joy, and deep conversation.

VOICE: What do you most enjoy about studying at the Music Academy?

Zhang: From the first moment I stepped onto the Miraflores campus, I was in awe of the beauty and facilities…and still am! The environment could not be better for personal and artistic growth.

Needless to say, my colleagues and the faculty here are beyond amazing in every way, and I will never forget that every single staff member and administrator knew my name on day one! To me, that really shows how invested Music Academy is in us and our experience here.

In addition to being a modern piano enthusiast, I am also passionate about sharing my love for earlier keyboard instruments... There is something so special about hearing the music of Frescobaldi, J.S. Bach, and Mozart the way they heard it... Without knowing that MA had

music we are consuming is changing as well. I believe very strongly that truly live music and the dedication it takes to achieve it is crucial to our humanity and should be not only preserved, but celebrated. The deep love I have for this craft has only gone deeper, and I think sharing that indescribable feeling with others is what keeps me craving more.

VOICE: What do you most enjoy about studying at the Music Academy?

Nunes: There are many aspects of the Music Academy that have made the summer so fantastic, but if I had to choose one, it would be the connection I have with the other oboe fellows here. The four of us bonded so quickly and easily; it really set the stage for a friendly, collaborative and encouraging working environment that I know will continue long after the festival has concluded.

VOICE: What do you find fulfilling about performing?

Nunes: I live for the excitement of performing anything live.

I think there’s an intensely focused mindset we arrive at as performers when a concert begins that the audience can sort of “tune-in” to if they please. For one or two hours, the performer(s) and their audience can sort of escape to another world where time isn’t quite the same and everything outside can be forgotten. This connection has become addictive to me and when it happens, it’s just the greatest feeling.

VOICE: What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Nunes: I’m looking forward to so many different performances this summer, but I think the highlight for me will be an X2 series concert performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Bassoon and Continuo in G Minor on July 5th. I’m performing this piece with some incredibly inspiring faculty members and I intend on soaking up as much of their expertise as possible. www.musicacademy.org

harpsichords, I emphasized my passion for historical instruments in my application and in a phone call with Dean DeVries following my acceptance. It is clear that MA really looks after each fellow and their interests because I now get to perform this summer not only on modern piano but also the harpsichord in the Lobero Theatre!

I also have to say that the music-loving community here in Santa Barbara is off-the-charts amazing and generous. I have talked to such interesting audience members here on campus, and it was such a joy to meet my sponsors for the summer, Hyon Chough and Maurice Singer, after the Solo Piano Showcase!

VOICE: What do you find fulfilling about performing?

Zhang: To me, a performance allows people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate the human spirit. Music is a soft power that can truly heal. Robert Levin has been a huge influence since I started working with him while at Juilliard alongside my other two megainspirational teachers, Veda Kaplinsky and Joseph Kalichstein... Over breakfast one morning at the Sarasota Music Festival, Levin said that when we perform, we have a huge responsibility. One that includes touching the soul of someone else. He said that even if we moved just one person in the audience, we have “done our job.” That has really stuck with me. Many times, I am performing for hundreds or thousands of people I do not know...Yet, I am going out on stage hoping to truly communicate with them in a powerful way - using words and music.

Performing means that I am baring my soul in an intimate and vulnerable way to total strangers who share a commonality so deep. Performing creates a space where the voices of multiple generations can come together and coexist.

Performing also means to me that a set number of people congregate together to share a moment in time that will never happen again. To me, that is a most beautiful thing.

VOICE: What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Zhang: I have enjoyed working with Jeremy Denk and Conor Hanick so very much, and look forward to many more music-making sessions with these two incredible leaders of the piano world.

I love teaching as much as I love performing. I get to see so many of my students, who have become some of my closest friends and supporters, everywhere I go! I have been busy scheduling meetups with my friends who live in California and honestly, everyone wants to come spend a few nights in Santa Barbara, so I guess I chose the perfect place to spend the summer!

Puerto Vallarta and Santa Barbara Sister Cities Celebrate 50 Years

UERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO, AND SANTA BARBARA JOINED HANDS in 1972 as Sister Cities launching an exchange of culture, art, and attitudes that has developed into a 50-year friendship. Puerto Vallarta guests and dignitaries traveled to Santa Barbara this past week to celebrate the half-century-long bond and to reinforce the friendship that has grown between the two communities.

“Once you become friends with your Sister City, you start to feel like family and develop a love for each other’s culture,” said Gil Garcia, Treasurer and Past President of the Santa Barbara Sister City Committee. “That’s what gives them energy and desire to support each other in times of need.”

The visit included a stop at Mission Santa Barbara

The celebration from June 30th to July 6th began with an introductory potluck to swap conversation and get to know one another, followed by tours and parties hosted by the Santa Barbara committee. Puerto Vallarta guests met with Mayor Wade Nomura at Carpinteria’s City Hall, enjoyed the Rods & Roses car show, and gathered at the Old Mission for Sunday service.

President of Puerto Vallarta-Santa Barbara Sister Cities, Irma Lorena Perez Coultas, gave thanks and reflected on the purpose of the Sister City organization.

Following the Reaffirmation Ceremony, Sister Cities members shared a City of Santa Barbara hosted Mexican lunch by Mayos Carniceria & Tacos, a local Santa Barbara restaurant.

Commemorative gifts were exchanged, and Sister City Executive Board Members were recognized.

They concluded the festivities with a PVSB Sister Cities Reaffirmation Ceremony at City Hall, where Mayor Randy Rowse re-signed the Sister City Agreement to continue the union between the two cities. Emanuel Gallegos from the Office of the Consul of Mexico presented certificates of recognition, and President of Santa Barbara-Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities, Sebastian Aldana, expressed his appreciation for all of the contributions made by the Puerto Vallarta members, and

They have jointly supported the Puerto Vallarta Rehabilitation Clinic since its inception in the 1980s, the Volcanes/Puerto Vallarta Sewing School, the Tomatlan Health Clinic, 19 years of Law Enforcement Exchanges with support provided to the Puerto Vallarta Police Academy, and a partnership with the International Firefighters Training Association. For 16 years they have supported the I Madonnari Street Painting Festival in Santa Barbara and assisted in creating a similar festival in Puerto Vallarta. They actively support the Sister Cities International Young Artists and Author Showcase.

The PVSC delegation makes an effort to visit Santa Barbara regularly. Santa Barbara members also visit and are planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta in November of this year.

Restoring the Great Arch

Santa Barbara Courthouse Legacy Foundation The Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the most distinctive courthouses in America and its Great Arch is in need of restoration. Completed in 1929, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, the building is a functioning courthouse, an iconic symbol of the Spanish heritage of Santa Barbara, a focal point for community festivals, concerts, weddings, and public events, and a landmark attraction for nationwide and international tourism.

Because of this need, the Courthouse Legacy Foundation is now seeking financial support for an ongoing project to restore the Great Arch entrance into the Courthouse and its Sunken Gardens. Doorways under the Arch lead to the Courthouse lobby, active courtrooms, County offices, the famed Mural Room, and the Clock Tower.

The Great Arch and Clock Tower are the most photographed features of the building.

Over the years, the Great Arch has suffered weathering and

deterioration. A Comprehensive Conditions assessment of the Courthouse identified a number of restoration requirements for the Arch. Cracks and erosion in the sandstone masonry and cast-stone carvings and sculptures, have led to water infiltration and damage to stone and cast-stone features on the Arch. A previous attempt, at an unknown time in the past, to protect the stone and castings with a clear coating, has actually resulted in discoloration and further erosion of these features.

There is also a potential danger that some pieces may fall onto public spaces.

The ultimate goal of this project is to completely restore the Arch to its distinctive appearance as the signature entrance to a designated National Historic Landmark building and an iconic symbol of the Spanish heritage and identity of the city of Santa Barbara.

In 2020 EverGreene Architectural Arts, Inc. performed the

sophisticated work of removing the degraded stone coating that was causing deterioration of the Great Arch. They conducted a multi-step analysis for best methods of treatment and followed Federal standards for preserving a National Historic Landmark. Their Phase I cleaning activity was completed on time and on budget for $175,000.

The CLF is now focused on raising funds to begin Phase II of the conservation effort, which will address damage to the sandstone blocks, failed mortar joints, and loss of ornamental stone features on the Great Arch.

Legacy Foundation In 2004, a small group of committed citizens came together and formed the Santa Barbara Courthouse Legacy Foundation (CLF), dedicated to the conservation and restoration of this magnificent building for generations to come. The CLF ensures all conservation, restoration, and restoration projects meet federally mandated standards for a National Historic Landmark.

Published in 1959, the book has captured the imagination of generations of young readers, as they follow twelve-years-old Sam Gribley as he runs away from his family’s crowded New York City apartment into the Catskill Mountains.

Through great determination, trial and error, and a bit of luck, Sam manages to build a life for himself on the mountain. Its detailed descriptions spark a deep appreciation for the land, animals, and plants that surround us, offering readers of all ages a mental escape into the Catskills’ wooded hills. In a world where climate change and human actions constantly threaten our natural resources, My Side of the Mountain remains an idyllic, worthy read.

This legacy continues to shine through Eugene Onegin’s amazing cast of Music Academy fellows. For Kidd, who is currently earning his master’s degree at Yale School of Music, the opportunity is a “dream role.”

His experiences working with the Music Academy’s faculty have made the opportunity all the more special.

“They’re truly some of the most knowledgeable and influential people in the industry.... I feel like every single one of them has all of our best interests at heart,” Kidd noted, adding that the Music Academy’s collaborative environment has allowed him to connect with singers and musicians of all backgrounds.

Mezzo-soprano Joanne Evans, who is currently earning her master’s degree at Bard College Conservatory, values the opportunity to develop her skills alongside young people from around the world. She admires the modern attitude of her character, Olga.

“She’s quite independent as a woman,” said Evans. “I’d say she’s sort of the one singular character in the opera who tries not to be beholden by this oldfashioned idea that she has no life of her own if she doesn’t have a husband.”

Soprano Johanna Will echoed appreciation for her character, Tatyana’s growth into a strong woman who remains steadfast in the face of generational inequity. She recently earned her

From Priceless Pennies To Hallelujah

Kathryn Clark: Fragile Democracy, The White House, 2022

The Sum of the Parts: Dimensions in Quilting • Craft Contemporary

The showstopper piece for me was a deconstructed quilt by Kathryn Clark (b. 1971), Fragile Democracy, The White House, with its reference to the “erosion of democracy since Donald Trump took office in 2016.” My compliments go to the exhibition curator, Holly Jerger, who is not only responsible for the choice of the artworks, but also for their rather dramatic juxtapositions.

The other exhibition, Many, features twelve LA-based artists utilizing “multiples in their artistic practices.” My favorite piece at this exhibition was a sculpture suspended from the ceiling and covered with 2,000 pennies chained together. It was intriguing to learn that the artist, Zeina Baltagi (b. 1988), along with her collaborators, wore this sculpture in performance embodying the “weight of capitalism.” Talk about pennies being priceless!

The other artwork that held my attention was by Narsiso Martinez (b. 1977), who utilizing cardboard boxes collected from different grocery stores, painted a series of portraits of agricultural workers. These portraits were drawn from photographs to “address the human and environmental costs of the agricultural industry,” in which the artist himself worked for many years. Martinez’s use of gold leaf as the background for the portraits elevates these agricultural workers into saintly figures.

Both exhibitions run through September 11th.

VERY TIME I GO TO SEE EXHIBITIONS AT CRAFT CONTEMPORARY, I think about this small museum as “The Little Engine That Could.” And as usual, the two current exhibitions are full of challenging artworks full of surprises.

For his book, Fetterman selected 120 photographs and included a quote from each photographer and a message about his relationship with the artist. He also includes his personal feelings about each photo. Take a look at this photo by William Klein (b. 1928), shot in a Russian steam bath in Paris, depicting radiant women proud of their beaming flesh. Describing this photo, Fetterman writes, “This is an image I enjoy returning to again and again. Definitely beautiful and sexy.” Yes, I couldn’t agree with him more!

The Power of Photography exhibition runs through September 3rd.

Here is another suggestion I have for you, my friends, if you are ready and willing to pray with the one and only Leonard Cohen singing his internationally renowned hymn, Hallelujah, along with other major recording artists. The new documentary, Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song, has a “wealth of never-before-seen archival materials…including extremely rare audio recordings and interviews.” Seeing it at the Laemmle Theater a few nights ago, I realized that Cohen was not only a great lyricist, composer, and performer, he was also a man of wisdom and deep convictions. This documentary made me feel like I made a new friend whose songs and prayers stay with me.

The documentary is now playing at the Royal Laemmle Theater.

A Stage For The Whole Community

Renovation of the Band Shell will revitalize Plaza del Mar for music, drama, dance, and celebratory events. As a public park, the City provides low-cost access for non-profit organizations that serve a broad cross-section of the community.

The PARC Foundation The Parks and Recreation Community (PARC) Foundation is partnered with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to achieve Band Shell renovation.

All the funding needed to complete the project is $45,000.

A Parks and Recreation Department and Parc Foundation Project Established as a City park in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and outdoor gatherings. The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band.
