Vax-or-Test Requirements Growing

TATE AND LOCAL REQUIREMENTS TO VAX-OR-TEST have grown to new levels with the Governor’s requirement that all teachers in the State of California must vaccinate or be tested weekly, on Wednesday — locally the City of Goleta agreed to the same measures this week. All of this following UCSB and the UC system, the City of San Francisco, Santa Barbara Unified School District, California employees, and all health care workers requiring and implementing vaccination mandates.

Lagging behind is the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara County Health Department, with no public hearings or formal meetings on vaccine requirements. The city has offered clinics and mask requirements, with a clinic to be held on August 13th 9am to 12 noon. (See page 15 for details.)

“We are now dealing with a pandemic of the unvaccinated, and it’s going to take renewed efforts to protect Californians from the dangerous Delta variant,” Newsom said in an announcement to the public.

The quick rise of virus variants, especially the Delta variant, has caused a stronger safety response by employers and governmental agencies.

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the City of New York have announced similar mandates.

Also on Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged all pregnant women to get the COVID-19 vaccine after disturbing numbers of unvaccinated mothers-to-be have become seriously ill with the virus.

Expectant women have run a higher higher risk of severe illness and complications from COVID-19, however, vaccination rates are low, with only about 23 percent having received at least one dose, according to CDC data.

“The vaccines are safe and effective, and it has never been more urgent to increase vaccinations as we face the highly transmissible Delta variant and see severe outcomes from COVID-19 among unvaccinated pregnant people,’’ said CDC Director Dr Rochelle Walensky in a statement.

President Biden joined in and encouraged business leaders during a forum to require vaccinations of their employees, according to the Wall Street Journal.

N A GROUNDBREAKING MOVE TO CURB THE SPREAD OF COVID-19, both the Santa Barbara Unified School District and Santa Barbara City College have announced that its staff members will be required to be vaccinated. Both decisions were announced on Thursday, August 5th, 24 hours before Santa Barbara County reinstated its indoor mask mandate amidst rising COVID-19 and Delta variant cases.

“There exists a health emergency that requires action to safeguard students and staff against risks of infection, illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID 19,” states the SB Unified Board of Education’s resolution. “The Board has a responsibility to prevent the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 infections at SBUSD sites.”

All SB Unified staff must be vaccinated before Tuesday, August 17th.

If a staff member is not vaccinated by this date, they will have to submit to weekly COVID-19 testing. The SB Unified Board’s resolution further recommends that all students and family members aged 12 years and above also receive their vaccines.

SBCC faculty and employees will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 1st. In addition to this staff requirement, the SBCC Board of Trustees has also declared that all students and members of the public visiting SBCC campus buildings will also be required to be vaccinated.

“The college, the Superintendent/ President, and the Board acknowledge that there are differing and strongly held views about a requirement for a COVID-19 vaccine and other public health measures,” stated the SBCC Board of Trustees’ introduction to its resolution. “However, it is the responsibility of the Board to act based upon the recommendation of medical experts and sound science and in the best interests of the institution by protecting the health and safety of students, employees, and the community in its efforts to provide learning opportunities during the current pandemic.”

SBCC staff, students, and visitors who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, but have an approved exemption, must wear N95 masks while on SBCC campus as well as submit negative COVID-19 test results every week to the school.

NEW, MUCH-ANTICIPATED RELEASE has joined the ranks of books written by Sanata Barbara writers, as local author Lawrence Spann publishes A Parable of Lies. A dedicated Santa Barbara community member for 14 years, Spann is well known for hosting writing workshops with Adult Education at Santa Barbara City College, Casa Esperanza, and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. Now, he has applied his talents to craft his first full-length piece of healing fiction.

Lawrence Spann, PhD A compelling tale, A Parable of Lies centers on Neal Motherwell, who faithfully follows the advice of therapists to write his memories, feelings, and observations when experiencing times of grief. In fact, he follows this advice so faithfully that he sometimes writes up to almost 20,000 words a day. Still, Neal remains convinced that he has moved past his abusive childhood until his brother Mick passes away. Suddenly, Neal is launched into his own “search for authenticity in a world of deceit.”

“A Parable of Lies is not a novel or memoir but something in between, an experiment in healing fiction, an illustration of writing as an act of redemption, and renewal,” explains the book’s description.

Adding to the book’s unique nature are the writing prompts embedded in the narrative, as well as its very own accompanying playlist that features songs ranging from The Eagles and Donovan to Florence and the Machine. Through these components, the book engages with its readers to create a more interactive reading experience.

Prior to moving to Santa Barbara, Spann earned his bachelor’s degrees in English and Health Sciences from University of Miami and Duke University, respectively.

He went on to receive his master’s degree in Health Sciences from Duke University before ultimately earning his Ph.D. in Creative Writing with Emphasis in Medical Humanities from Union Institute & University.

Over the years, Spann has hosted more than a thousand therapeutic writing groups. Many of these writing groups were established through the The Literature, Arts, and Medicine Program (LAMP) at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento, CA, which Spann founded himself. His previously compiled works include Blood on the Page and Poet Healer.

Spann will celebrate the release of A Parable of Lies with a virtual book launch from 2 to 3pm Sunday, August 15th.

APTURING SANTA BARBARA’S BEACH TOWN SPIRIT and inherently artistic nature, Seaside Makers Collective brings a fresh retail experience to State Street.

Owned by local businesswoman Kristin Fraser, the store displays original art, clothing, accessories, and more. Merchandise is crafted by more than 40 artisans, the majority of which are hyper-local. Also featuring a signature Grapeseed Company Scent Bar, where customers can design custom-scented toiletries, the store offers a wholly unique and creative inventory for locals and visitors alike.

“The main thing is it's not just about shopping,” shared Fraser. “It's about the story behind the product, and that you can come and let your own artist's creativity fly in there too.”

Originally from Boston, Fraser moved to Santa Barbara in 2004.

Since then, she has owned and operated The Grapeseed Company, which crafts organic skin care products from the by-products of wine. However, upon witnessing the devastation of the Thomas Fire and the subsequent 2018 Montecito mudslides, she felt compelled to expand her business to support the local artisan community. Within the year, she opened the first Seaside Makers Collective store in Carpinteria.

“I saw all of my maker and artist friends struggling,” explained Kristin Fraser Fraser. “We have many facets to our business, and retail was just one of them, but [we were] opening up retail and making it more about all the amazing artisans in Santa Barbara county.”

The community response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. In November 2019, Fraser opened the second Seaside Makers Collective store in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone on Anacapa Street, which quickly became a favorite stop among locals.

“People were just super excited to see all these amazing artisans and artists in one shop, and it became a place where people knew they could go to get gifts that were really meaningful, that weren't just about gift-giving, but had a story behind them,” said Fraser.

Now, driven by the Anacapa store’s building being sold, Seaside Makers Collective has found a new home on State Street, in the former location of Francesca’s. Inside, an inviting array of lovingly crafted pillows, handbags, clothing, and jewelry greets customers. There is also ocean-themed photography prints, as well as stationary, candles, keychains, stickers, some food items, and other small gifts.

Yet despite this diverse inventory, all items are united through two driving factors – they represent life in Santa Barbara and they are artisan-made.

A highlight, the Grapeseed Company Scent Bar, lets customers create their very own custom-scented personal care items, including lotion, bath salts, body butter, and shampoo and conditioner. More than a hundred different essential oils and fragrance oils are currently available at the State Street location.

As she celebrates the State Street store’s first month open, Fraser is excited to be a part of a surge of new businesses opening throughout downtown Santa Barbara.

“I feel like this is a way for us to kind of reclaim our own town again and get the things that people in Santa Barbara love and want back in the main part of the town,” said Fraser.

KATIE DAVIS is a former Vice President of web and ecommerce at the tech company Citrix. She became a climate change speaker after training with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project in 2012. Her previous experiences also include serving as Chair of the Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter and elected member of the Sierra Club California Executive Board, serving on the CEC’s Partnership Council for three years, and volunteering with CEC rallies, lobbying, and advocacy work. She was also appointed to the Community Advisory Council for Central Coast Community Energy and the Santa Barbara Air Pollution Katie Davis Control District.

Karl Hutterer

KARL HUTTERER, PH.D. is now an Emeritus Director at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History after serving as executive director there for twelve years. Prior to this position, he acted as the Director of the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Washington, where he was also a professor of anthropology.

His past experiences further include holding positions at the University of Hawaii, the East-West Center in Hawaii, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Hutterer has also previously served on the CEC Board of Directors for eight years.

BRUCE KENDALL serves as a professor and associate dean at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara. Previously serving on the CEC Board of Directors for six years, Kendall’s research works to advance science relating to sustainable fisheries management and endangered species conservation. Beyond this work, he has also created opportunities for UCSB graduate students to engage in interdisciplinary research and education, and worked toward promoting and expanding campus sustainability.

Kim Kimbell

KIM KIMBELL, a founding partner of the law firm of Allen & Kimbell, LLP, practiced law in Santa Barbara for 48 years.

His past community engagement has included serving as president of the Goleta Valley Historical Society, chairman of the Gaviota Planning Advisory Committee, and spending over 25 cumulative years on the CEC Board of Directors, including five years as Board President. Currently, he is actively involved with the Dean’s Council of the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara, San Roque St. Vincent’s de Paul Society, and the Coastal Ranches Conservancy.

MARYANNE MOTT has joined the CEC President’s Council after helping shape the organization’s development as a CEC founding board member in 1970. The daughter of former General Motors company director and board member, Charles Stewart Mott, she is a trustee of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the chairwoman of the Ruth Mott Foundation Board of Trustees. Mott is also a founder of the Warsh-Mott Legacy, a private foundation that has awarded grants since 1985 to progressive organizations addressing food sovereignty, emerging tech, and democratic rights and governance.

N CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND AS PART OF A CAL HUMANITIES PROJECT EXPLORING IMMIGRANT IDENTITY, Santa Barbara Public Library invites artists of Latin American origin to submit works of visual art for a featured show, The Things We Do Not Say:Intergenerational Conversations Through Art on Taboo Subjects, in the East and West Faulkner Galleries during the months of September and October 2021. This show will focus on about how different artistic expressions communicate the artist’s unique vision and experience as an immigrant to older generations in the hope that these works can provoke an open intergenerational conversation about any aspect of their lives that are not easily spoken about within families as they negotiate their identity as immigrants in a new country.

Artists of all ages who are first, second, or later generations of immigrants are invited to submit. Priorities are given to those who live in Santa Barbara County.

Artwork Guidelines: Open to all visual arts media either two dimensional or three dimensional. Limited space for three dimensional works, so please include size in description.

Open to poetry reading, dance, music, or other and performative expressions during the art reception. Please include estimated time required for the performance.

s Santa Barbara washes away Fiesta’s residual confetti, community members eagerly prepare for the next big local event — getting ready to send our students back to school.

From shopping and academic advice to local resources, here are some points to consider as your family prepares for the 2021-2022 school year!

After over a year of studying mostly at home indoors in front of their computers, students may feel disoriented as they resume going back and forth between campus and home. This may be especially true for incoming middle and high school students who are exploring a new campus and classrooms.

Accordingly, helping students develop and stick to a schedule can help them become and remain organized.

For younger students, parents can help them create an interactive schedule for each week. Using a whiteboard or a piece of large construction paper, students can craft and decorate a weekly schedule where they will write down what assignments they have to finish each afternoon after school. If needed, an incentive system can also be put in place so that whenever they accomplish a task, they receive a sticker or a stamp marking their success.

Many local elementary schools also provide their students with a main folder for them to store their worksheets and paperwork for parents. By supporting this system, and setting up a place at home for students to store their work, it will be easier for them

Older students can also benefit from creating their own weekly schedule on a whiteboard or with a physical agenda. Online tools are also popular... including Google Calendar that students can use to sync their schedules with their phone and computer and set up alarms to remind them of upcoming deadlines.

In the same spirit of younger grades’ folder system, using a series of notebooks and binders can help middle and high school students organize their papers across classes and subjects.

Back to School Shopping One of the most exciting parts of heading back to school is shopping for new supplies. Regardless of whether a student faces the approaching year with anxiety or delight, the chance to pick out new shoes, clothes, or a backpack can bring a smile to their face.

However, this fall’s shopping lists will likely include a few new items – especially as younger, unvaccinated children and their parents plan strategies to stay healthy amidst the pandemic.

Face masks will be a required part of students’ everyday life. One way to help your student enjoy the experience of wearing their mask at school is to let them pick it out. From cupcakes and dinosaurs to beloved television characters and even glow-in-thedark designs, there are countless styles sold across town that let kids express themselves while staying

safe. If students are encouraged to choose reusable cloth masks, parents will be able to easily wash them once their learners arrive home. And, students can feel good about an environmentally friendly choice.

Beyond masks, parents may want students to carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer to use throughout the day. Prior to the pandemic, it was popular among local middle and high school students to attach small bottles of scented hand sanitizer to their backpacks. Now, this trend offers students the ability to clean their hands quickly and easily, without having to leave their desks to use a shared bottle.

Scented hand sanitizers and fun hand sanitizer holders are widely available online and in downtown Santa Barbara stores. Just remember, the CDC recommends the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Parents can check a sanitizer’s ingredients before purchasing.

As younger students settle in and build friendships through the age-old message “sharing is caring,” parents may wish to purchase individual, unique sets of school supplies for their child. This way, students can rely on using only their own, special supplies in the classroom instead of passing pencils, scissors, or other supplies between their fellow classmates.

An amazing summer season ends in triumph

AST SATURDAY AT THE GRANADA THEATRE, the Music Academy of the West Chamber Orchestra, with one of the world’s great conductors, Marin Alsop, at the helm, presented the last concert of the 2021 summer season.

Masked but happy, everyone in the audience appreciated with gusto, the opportunity to engage with live music makers once again, after too long a hiatus on account of COVID-19. In the annals of the Music Academy of the West, 2021 will be remembered as one of the most important artistic renewals in the institution’s 74-year history.

Despite the unpredictability of the virus, the Music Academy administration and staff pulled off a minor miracle this summer, bringing back, under difficult circumstances, an interactive experience between audience and performers.

The Music Academy’s dynamic orchestral, chamber music, piano, and vocal training programs for young professionals jump-started with a roar, after so many challenges over the past year and a half. Next year’s 2022 summer season, it can safely be predicted, will be blockbuster.

Conductor Marin Alsop and the Academy Chamber Orchestra took a bow after Marin Alsop is no stranger to the opening work on Saturday’s Community Concert Saturday’s program, Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Beethoven wanted things to be energized and indicated so in his metronome markings.

Relishing the new consciousness, Alsop gave the audience a refreshing romp through Orchestrated for the same brass instrumentation as Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the all four movements that soared and pitched, dove deep, and meditated quietly but with Common Man (1942) but with a larger percussion battery, Alsop knows every kink and curlicue, having conducted the piece countless times over the years. The result, a Puckish purpose, free at last, of a couple generations of misunderstanding. performance: facile, glittery, amusing, and virtuosic.

Tricky meters, mood changes on a dime, brilliant wind, brass, and string sectional flurries, pulsing rhythms, and stylish tympani licks – what’s not to like? In stunning command of each lovely, calm, and pitching tempest, Alsop was a marvel of fabulous musicianship and subtle conductorial handicraft. Bravi tutti!

Intermission still on the forbidden list at indoor events because of COVID, a quick reshuffling of winds and brass presaged the last piece on the program, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92. Known for its several fabulous horn licks, Alsop had some fun. Placing tympani dead center behind strings and winds, the conductor arranged trumpets on one side and the French horn section - two behind two, behind two - on the other side of the tympani, rather than in the usual horizontal line behind the winds. The result was fantastic, both in look and sound. A special shout out to the exciting, vigorous, and entirely correct playing by whichever of the two tympanists listed on the program did the 7:30 Beethoven gig.

Luckily, in recent years interpreters have learned a lot more about Beethoven’s intended and clearly notated tempo markings. Forget the broken metronome theory.

Santa Barbara’s Multifamily Investment Market Continues to Recover

HE MULTIFAMILY HOUSING INVESTMENT MARKET FOR THE SOUTH COAST OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY continued its recovery during the second quarter of this year.

The number of sales increased from the first quarter and this is a good sign of the continued appetite for investing in our local community. Additionally, the government programs that are compensating property owners for back due rent are providing a safety net for investors to continue believing in the long-term strength of the sector.

There were seven sales of properties with five or more units during the second quarter. While this was just more than the five reported from the 1st quarter, there are several more properties in escrow and that bodes well for the third quarter. Additionally, there were eleven properties for sale or in escrow at the end of the second quarter. This is a strong number providing some much-needed inventory for investors. The recent trend has been off market sales, but now sellers are beginning to return to the market and this could mean a return to traditional stability. Santa Barbara remains a highly sought after destination and the investment community continues to realize that as average sale prices continued to rise through the second quarter.

There continues to be strong demand for apartments, partly because of the continued boom in the residential sales market. However, we have begun to see some signs of the single-family residential market cooling and Brian Johnson that could help provide a little more vacancy for the apartment market as SBAOR President Buyers are not as hot and heavy for homes, allowing renters to have more opportunity to find rental housing. As new construction projects have come to market, we have seen a strong appetite from tenants looking for new properties with desirable amenities. Recently, a brand new 26 unit project leased up in under one month. The tenant mix ranged from young professionals who wanted to live and work downtown to retirees looking to be close to family without the responsibilities of homeownership. New construction continues to be the best solution for our housing supply issues and there are signs that residents and local leaders may be able to find more common ground to make this a reality.

Harbor VOICE SB Rollers Club Has A Home

IME SEEMS TO PASS SO QUICKLY (OR SLOWLY!) as a result of the pandemic uncertainties that I wonder how it’s possible that I could have missed a spectacular weekend event that takes place across from the sunny sand and sea on Leadbetter Beach. On Sunday afternoons, Lot #3 of Santa Barbara City College, previously vacant due to COVID restrictions, has suddenly become the place to see and be seen. Now the home of the SB Rollers, the lot is full of roller skaters of all ages regardless of skill level or wheel type, from roller blades, skateboards, scooters, a few bikes, and most astounding, the classic four-wheel roller-skates. It’s a welcoming place for all, regardless of age or wheel size!

Lot 3’s party on Sundays doesn’t go unnoticed! Skaters float round the lot, some just finding their footing and others doing the most amazing feats – like skating on ice – on this generous, newly paved space. Seems I was always on the way to somewhere, although my car, slowing to a crawl each time I passed by, was telling me that this was the place. Last Sunday, finally listening to the wisdom of my vehicle, I stopped to check things out.

The now official SB Rollers was conceived by Terrance Brown, a personal trainer whose business thinned with the onslaught of the coronavirus. On advice from his mother, he chose to not let the situation get him down. In March of last year, on his birthday, Brown’s experience with skating began at Skating Plus down the 101 freeway in Ventura. Apparently, his first experience was so much fun that he decided to take some lessons. He was the oldest person in his group. Other than one seven year old, the class was composed of kids even younger. Brown almost bailed, but, as further testament to his determination, he hung in, learning not only how to skate, but learned lots from the kids themselves. He finally ditched using a supportive walker (thanks to advice from a 13 year old) and went Grandparents Donna and Dan out in the rink on his own, followed by help from YouTube and Foley

lots of practice on a basketball court.

Eventually, he felt confident enough to head out to the bike path by the harbor. Skating there he met Sean Bowie, a man in his 50’s having the time of his life on roller skates, too.

Bowie and Brown became skating buddies, attracting more and more skaters until they had what looked like a club. Which is exactly what it turned out to be eventually – now known as the SB Rollers.

On my visit last Sunday, I had the good fortune to be welcomed by the Foley family in full regalia – grandparents, parents, and grandson – under their sun tent ready for the afternoon’s activity. Rolling around the parking lot was Quiana and David with two-year old Eros, in a speedy stroller (all wheels welcome, remember?) hitting the 15 mph go-around right along with his parents.

“People are just starting to get here,” explained Quiana. “The official hours are from 1:30 to 5:30 on Sundays, but I was here yesterday for a while for a little practice.” David added, “I’m also a rollerblader, so four wheels or any kind of wheels works here.” Enjoying the show was granddad Dan Foley suited up, but taking the day off due to a strained a muscle – although to be honest, it didn’t look to me like he’d be off the wheels for all that long. Donna Foley, his wife, filled me in on the usual activities. “Honestly this space is open to anything that rolls! You see all kinds of things, even jugglers on unicycles, but it changes from week to week. Also depends on the day and time or the kind of weekend... this having been Fiesta week there may be more or less who show up.”

Sunday’s good luck for me was finding a parking spot in a usually overcrowded lot just before the regular crowd arrived. Nonetheless, SB Rollers is definitely a happenin’ thing: A roller skating revival here in Santa Barbara! Friday: This ROLLOVER crash on Ortega Ridge Road in the Summerland - Montecito area was on one of the tightest two-lane off shoots from Highway 101 around. It’s often very busy with drivers using it as a “third lane” to the jammed freeway.

Arrest in Hit & Run

After a teenage girl on a bike was injured in a suspected DUI HIT AND RUN in downtown Santa Barbara, police located the vehicle and the suspect across town and made this arrest. Witnesses helped the victim and gave key details to the police.

Another reason for consumers’ optimism is that average hourly pay rose 4.0 percent and is now above the pre-pandemic level. No wonder, with the 8.7 million still unemployed, many of which maybe holding out for better pay and working conditions!

“At the current rate of hiring, the U.S. won’t regain all the lost jobs at least until early 2022 — and it could even take a lot longer than that,” says MarketWatch’s Jeffry Bartash.

How much longer it will take might depend on COVID-19, and the Delta Variant, which is causing a fourth surge in infections, overwhelming some hospitals in Texas, Florida, and other red states that aren’t enforcing a mask mandate.

“The current 7-day moving average of daily new cases (66,606) increased 64.1 percent compared with the previous 7-day moving average (40,597),” reports the CDC. “The current 7-day moving average is 73.8 percent lower than the peak observed on January 10, 2021 (254,063) and is 480.1 percent higher than the lowest value observed on June 19, 2021 (11,483). A total of 34,722,631 COVID-19 cases have been reported as of July 28.”

HIS WAS ANOTHER VERY STRONG UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) with 943,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs added in July and most of it in the service industries. Leisure/Hospitality, Government, Education/Health, and Professional/Business added 767,000 of those jobs.

“The unemployment rate declined by 0.5 percentage point to 5.4 percent in July, and the number of unemployed persons fell by 782,000 to 8.7 million,” said the BLS Household Survey.

“These measures are down considerably from their highs at the end of the February-April 2020 recession. However, they remain well above their levels prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (3.5 percent and 5.7 million, respectively, in February 2020.”

This is why consumers remain so optimistic, even with alarm bells ringing that economic activity may slow due to the pandemic’s latest surge, as I said last week. Because July’s unemployment report confirms it’s not hurting the jobs market with the six million plus job vacancies and employers practically begging their employees to return to work.

Community News SB Museum of Natural History Names New Trustees

T

he Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, newly renovated in 2018, and boasting state-of-the-art interactive exhibits for all ages, paired with the Central Coast’s only planetarium, on 17 acres of oak woodland along Mission Creek, has welcomed seven community members to its Board of Trustees. www.sbnature.org

LOREN BOOTH is currently the president of Booth Ranches, which is a vertically integrated, family-run company that farms high quality oranges between Fresno to Maricopa. A fifth generation Californian, Booth spends her free time with her family and reining horses. She is an alumna of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly, Pomona, and attributes a great deal of her success to the California Agricultural Leadership Program.

Melissa Fassett

MELISSA FASSETT acts as a partner with the law firm Price, Postel & Parma LLP, where her practice largely focuses on advising and representing Loren Booth management in different aspects of intellectual property and labor and employment law. An active board member and volunteer on a number of local boards, she has also advised a number of Santa Barbara nonprofits. Both Fassett and her husband support the SB Museum of Natural History’s mission to preserve and share nature and history with the community, and enjoy our area’s many outdoor activities.

CORINNE HEYNING LAVERTY serves as a R. Timothy Kochis research associate and fellow at the Natural History Museum, Los Angeles County and is an associate of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation. Laverty is also a member of the All Eight Club, which tracks the individuals who have set foot on all eight Channel Islands, and the author of North America’s Galapagos: The Historic Channel Islands Biological Survey. She is retired from MUFG Union Bank, N.A., where she worked as a lender and in risk management and treasury.

KEITH REICHEL joins the SB Museum of Natural History’s Board of Trustees after first being introduced to the natural sciences through the museum’s after-school and summer classes. A born and raised Santa Barbarian, Reichel is now retired after working for 28 years with a local start-up that develops and manufactures medical and aerospace-grade specialty silicones. He earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from UC Davis.

S LOCAL STUDENT ATHLETES PREPARE TO RETURN TO THEIR SCHOOLS’ FIELDS AND COURTS THIS FALL, Cottage Urgent Care is offering a $49 reduced rate for sports clearance physical exams. Required by many local schools, these exams are critical to ensuring young athletes’ health.

“The most important thing we look for is cardiac anomalies, which could be a problem when athletes are over exerting themselves,” said Amanda Tuel, Nurse Practitioner Lead at Cottage Urgent Care. “We listen to the heart to check for murmurs and irregular beats. We also check their pulse for any asymmetry.”

The exams also include a review of a students’ medical history, examination of reflexes and joints, and a check for symptoms or signs of Type 1 diabetes.

New Visitor Precautions

By State Health Order, New Visitor Requirements for Hospital Entry

W

ITH COVID SPREADING IN OUR COMMUNITY, additional steps are being taken to protect the safety of hospital patients, visitors and healthcare staff. Effective Wednesday, August 11, Cottage Health hospitals in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley will implement the recent California Department of Public Health order requiring visitors to either verify completed COVID-19 vaccination, or verify a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours prior each visit.

Staff at the hospital entrances will assist visitors with this screening process. To prepare, we are asking hospital visitors to arrive with their Vaccine Record Card (printed or saved as image on phone), their immunization record from MyChart, or the digital QR code available at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.

If vaccination has not been completed, visitors will need a printed or digital copy of a negative COVID test within 72 hours prior to arrival.

All visitors and staff within the hospitals, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask at all times within all Cottage Health facilities.

This is vital to protecting pediatric patients too young to receive vaccine, and immunocompromised patients who are more vulnerable to COVID.

Cottage Health to Host Virtual Atrial Fibrillation Discussion

SARAH SHESHUNOFF has served as an Interim Executive Director for the small, rare disease Keith Reichel non-profit RUNX1 Research Program. She has also performed contract legal work, and supported local nonprofits with meeting facilitation and program evaluation. In the past, Sheshunoff has also clerked for both the Superior and Appellate Courts in Anchorage, Alaska, and practiced criminal defense. LOTUS VERMEER is the Assistant Dean for Partnerships & Development for the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara.
