I

n May of 2018, three-year-old Aryia complained of stomach pains. She would cry often, stopped eating, and couldn’t sleep. The doctors thought she may have been constipated or suffering from a UTI, however, as time went by her mother watched her struggle, not getting any better.

She took her again to the doctor insisting they do an ultrasound.

It was then the ultrasound discovered an abnormality on her liver, and she was sent to get a CT scan. The scan revealed that Aryia had a tumor the size of a softball in her stomach. This news came three months after her parents had just bought their first home.

“Many of the families, like Aryia’s, are referred to TBCF when they are dispirited, disoriented, and experiencing extreme chronic distress,” noted Executive Director, Dr. Corey Pahanish. “It is not only our mission but our privilege to effectively advocate for and compassionately promote the resilience necessary for our families to survive the tragedy that is pediatric cancer through financial, educational, and emotional support programming.”

Aryia’s family was sent from their home in Santa Maria to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and was told that Aryia had Neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. The family began their battle and spent the next six months undergoing chemotherapy in Los Angeles every three weeks. The emotional and physical stress of chemotherapy was difficult, notwithstanding the additional stress of traveling back and forth to LA every three weeks.

Fortunately, doctors were able to remove 90 percent of Ariya’s tumor with resections, but she lost most of one kidney.

Brave Aryia endured two stem cell transplants, twelve days of radiation and six months of immunotherapy before celebrating her victory with an End-of-Chemo party in 2019! She is currently in maintenance and is a bright ball of energy! In 2020 she was able to share her light with TBCF’s kids’ support groups and virtual events.

Naturally, during her treatment, bills piled up and her parents were gifted $4,250 in Direct Financial Assistance from TBCF to help alleviate some of their stress so that they could focus on Ariya’s care. Aryia received tutoring from TBCF and will be receiving another $1,500 of support to cover the cost of neuropsychological testing this fall. We are confident she will be successful going into first grade so that she can achieve her big dreams of becoming a

Renewal and Re-entry are inspiration for Art Festival

ENSING A NEED FOR RENEWAL AS PEOPLE EMERGE from the pandemic lock down, The Goleta Valley Art Association will host an art festival titled Renewal/Re-entry: Bringing Art Back to the Community, featuring original works by local artists on Saturday, August 21st, from 11am to 6pm at La Cumbre Plaza.

“This is an opportunity for our association to once again celebrate our vision of ‘Bringing Art to the Community,’ said Elizabeth Flanagan, president of the organization. “We’re very excited to be hosting this show in cooperation with the La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts. Several of LCCCA artists also are members of GVAA.”

The show will be mounted in the outdoor mall area of the plaza and provide visitors the opportunity to meet the association’s artists and view their artwork along with the La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts, which established three work/display galleries at the center in October 2019.

“With the community opening up again, we also look forward to continuing our after-school program for Goleta Valley Union School District students who will have the opportunity to develop and share their creative talents with the guidance of our members,” noted Flanagan. “It’s an important service to the children and the schools and one we relish providing.”

GVAA is also hosting a virtual exhibition, which may be viewed at www.thegoletavalleyartassociation.org.

A radio interview, on KZSB AM 1290, with GVAA artists will air this Friday, August 20th at 10am. Elizabeth Stewart will interview Terre Sanitate, Pat Heller, and Marie Arnold in a conversation about the GVAA’s Arts Festival at La Cumbre Plaza. The program will air again Friday at 8pm, 11am Sunday, and 12 midnight Monday morning.

The GVAA began as a small group of artists who first met in March 1963, showing their artwork at a Goleta bank. From its first meeting place in the office of the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce to its present-day site at the Goleta Public Library, the Association has grown from 16 members to over 200 members. The association will resume monthly exhibitions at the Goleta Public Library in December.

WAYNE ROSING is the founder of the Goleta-based nonprofit Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network. Featuring 23 telescopes that coordinate observations from seven sites worldwide, the network is a valuable resource to local and international students and researchers. In addition to this, Rosing has supported astronomy and science education at the SB Museum of Natural History through his contributions and advocacy, as well as by donating the telescopes in the museum’s Palmer Observatory.

NANCY PANIZZON has spent more than 1,400 hours volunteering with the SB Museum of Natural History Sea Center over the course of twelve years. Much of this time has been spent on the Sea Center’s Wet Deck, which lets visitors examine and learn about the marine life in the water below Stearns Wharf. Known as the “Wet Deck Queen” by Sea Center staff, Panizzon is adept at explaining complex scientific information to Sea Center visitors of all backgrounds and ages. She has also trained many of the Sea Center’s new volunteers.

Teacher’s Fund Hosts Back to School Fundraising Drive

O ENSURE SANTA BARBARA EDUCATORS RECEIVE THE MATERIALS AND TOOLS THEY NEED as they return to their classrooms, local nonprofit Teacher’s Fund has launched its annual Back to School fundraising drive. With $47,000 already donated by community members, the organization holds the goal of raising $60,000 by the time the drive ends on August 31st.

Hosted entirely online due to the ongoing pandemic, the Back to School fundraising drive will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to Santa Barbara kindergarten through 12th grade teachers as they purchase art materials, books, furniture, and more for the school year ahead. Individuals can either donate via a general contribution, or they may donate directly to specific item purchases. For every $50 donated toward supplies, community members will be entered into a drawing for one of the drive’s prizes.

City of SB to Develop Design Standards

OLLOWING STATE LEGISLATION REQUIRING MULTI-UNIT HOUSING PROJECTS TO BE APPROVED USING OBJECTIVE DESIGN STANDARDS, the City of Santa Barbara will develop a set of Santa Barbara Design Standards.

Made possible through a grant, the project will last over the next two years, with the standards ultimately applying to the City’s various multi-unit neighborhoods.

“In 2021, City Council adopted objective design standards for the limited types of multi-unit housing projects that qualify for State Senate Bill 35 permit streamlining,” explains the City’s announcement. “To further facilitate much-needed housing construction, expanded objective design standards are desired for a greater number of housing project types.”

The City will conduct public outreach through stakeholder meetings, community workshops, and videos. It has also launched a webpage to provide details and updates.

SBUSD Chief:

“We’re 150 Percent Committed to Keeping Our Schools Open”

UST TWO MONTHS AGO, sharp declines in COVID cases and the success of vaccines against the virus at last augured a normal school year for students, teachers and parents, after the pandemic had thrown the prior two into disarray.

So much for augury.

The sudden widespread transmission of the Delta variant of the virus, coupled with disappointingly low vaccination levels, and a whole new set of orders, regulations and “guidance” from Sacramento, together have reintroduced uncertainty as the chief operating principle for local school districts, here and across the nation.

At a time when the Delta variant is raging in areas with low vaccination rates, and pediatric hospitalizations are soaring, schools in half-a-dozen states, including Georgia, Mississippi and Texas, already have been forced to temporarily close. The superintendent said she and the district’s executive cabinet have engaged in detailed risk assessment planning for how to manage possible outbreaks in Santa Barbara schools.

“As far as what we have done, I have to say that I have an extremely capable cabinet, along with principals, and they have been working out scenarios: What if it’s 10 kids in a classroom in elementary versus junior high versus high school? What will that look like? What if it’s the teacher? What if it’s the whole class?” she said.

“We are in a pandemic. It is completely unpredictable -- but it doesn’t mean we can’t plan for it,” Dr. Hilda Maldonado, superintendent of Santa Barbara Unified School District told Newsmakers in a back-to-school interview a few days ago.

“We’re not going in blind,” she added. “We have contingency plans in place.”

vaccinated or whether or not they require certain accommodations,” she said. “Now that we’ve had legislation from the state (requiring) the Independent Study Program as the program of choice, if you don’t want to do the in-person school, then that’s what the parents will be offered.”

Amid community conflict, questions and confusion over mandates for masks and vaccines for teachers and students, Maldonado said she is absolutely sure about one thing: Santa Barbara Unified schools will open on Tuesday - and then stay open.

Last year, K-12 classes were held remotely for almost the entire year in Santa Barbara, but now the American College of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and other authorities are urging that schools across the country reopen as a priority.

“We are 150 per cent committed to keeping our kids in school and keeping our schools open,” the superintendent said. “That is our main mission, because that is why we exist.”

“I really believe that we have learned to be more agile and more flexible,” over the past year, she added. “And we’ll be doing that as these things happen and change.”

In the interview, Maldonado said that 89 percent of the district’s teachers have presented verification of vaccination, as of last Friday, which is not only an encouraging signal of their enthusiasm for returning to classrooms but also a reflection of how teachers unions nationwide have dropped their previous resistance to such mandates.

“So we’re now working on models of responses that we will have in place,” she added. “They started off with, I don’t know, 10 different scenarios, and then we just kind of worked through it, worked through it.”

In our 30-minute conversation, Superintendent Maldonado also discussed the district’s plan to have all students self-test with nasal swabs; the “decision tree” established to comply with the state’s latest raft of regulations; specific health and safety protocols set up in every school to help prevent the spread of the virus; and what is known so far about “learning loss” because of last year’s remote classes.

She also described several new programs, some financed by federal pandemic funds, to improve language literacy at the elementary level, to track and guide student achievement at all levels and to establish a “whole child health initiative” to provide eye, ear and dental checkups for students who need them.

“There’s a lot of systemic changes that we’re making,” Maldonado said. “We’re not going to just try to study the problem -- we’re going to attack it from the get-go.”

“I’m very proud of our teachers,” she said.

With children 12 years and older eligible for the vaccine, it is not yet known how many students in that cohort have received it, but Maldonado said the district is working with the Public Health Department to bring mobile clinics to the high schools and junior highs for students whose families want them to get a shot.

To date, she stated, very few students -- only about 100 out of more than 12,000 in the district -- have opted into the Alternative Learning Program established for those who do not wish to return to classrooms, or who will not comply with the mandate to wear a mask indoors at all times.

Vitamin Angels Continues Serving Women and Children in Need

S ORGANIZATIONS CELEBRATE WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY THIS WEEK, Santa Barbarabased organization Vitamin Angels remains dedicated to serving women and children in need.

Founded in 1994 by Santa Barbara local Howard Schiffer, Vitamin Angels works to ensure that nutritionally-vulnerable pregnant women and children have access to the vitamins and minerals they need to be healthy.

One element that distinguishes Vitamin Angels from other resource-focused organizations is that it works only with non-governmental organizations in the regions it impacts.

“Most governments offer health and nutrition services intended to meet the needs of their citizens. But despite their best efforts, limited resources often constrain their ability to do so,” explains Vitamin Angels’ website. “We partner with local, nonprofit organizations who provide health and nutrition services to underserved women and children. We seek to support only those initiatives that are complementary to and coordinated with existing national health services.”

To date, Vitamin Angels has helped 60 million women and children across the United States and more than 60 other countries. The organization plays a vital role in many communities, supporting efforts to offer at-risk pregnant women prenatal vitamins, distribute Vitamin A to children to support healthy growth and development, provide deworming tablets to children, and promote key nutrition education.

HE SANTA BARBARA SYMPHONY has welcomed three community members to its Board of Directors: Nancy Golden; Palmer Jackson, Jr.; and Simon Knight. The Symphony was founded in 1953, on the belief that a special city deserves a special orchestra. www.thesymphony.org

NANCY GOLDEN has rejoined the Board of Directors after originally serving as a member from 2014 to 2016.

Originally from Southport, CT, Golden established her own fundraising consulting business in 1987. Over the years, her clients included the California Symphony, CAL Performances, Merola Opera Program, and the Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra. Now retired, Golden’s community involvement has included serving on the Opera Santa Barbara board as a member and board chair from 2016-2018, and being a member of Nancy Golden the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the Santa Barbara Club. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Russell Sage College.

PALMER G. JACKSON, JR. is currently the Executive Chairman of the Granada Theatre and Managing Trustee of the Ann Jackson Family Foundation. A fourth-generation Santa Barbara local, his experiences also include helping to found American Riviera Bank in 2005, where he served as director until 2009. A dedicated community member, Jackson has also served as a Trustee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History since 2006, sat on the board of the Santa Barbara Foundation Roundtable since 2016, and is a former Trustee of the Palmer G. Jackson, Jr. Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club. He is an alumnus of Yale University and UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

SIMON KNIGHT is the founder and president of Satya Analytics, a company which provides innovative marketing and psychographic analytics to various economic development organizations and industries.

Previously, he worked as US president of Jensen and Partners International, and as global CIO of IKON Office Solutions. Knight has also studied with Kerry Camden, the bassoon professor at the Royal College of Music, and currently plays in amateur orchestras and chamber groups. Additionally, he is a Santa Simon Knight Barbara Chamber Music Society board member and co-founder of the Garage Chamber Orchestra. Knight earned his MBA from the Warwick Business School.

Rolf Geyling Joins Hospice of SB Board ROLF GEYLING is the newest member of Hospice of Santa Barbara’s Board of Directors. Since 2007, Geyling has acted as the President of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. Previously, he served as Director of Development at Fuller Theological Seminary and worked as an online instructor with its Master of Arts in Global Leadership program. He also ministered in South Central Los Angeles for ten years with Christian missions organization World Impact. Geyling earned his bachelor’s degree in urban studies from Stanford Rolf Geyling University and his master’s of divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary. www.hospiceofsantabarbara.org

Sea Center to be Temporarily Closed THE SEA CENTER ON STEARNS WHARF WILL BE CLOSED beginning September 7th through spring 2022 in order to undergo structural upgrades and experience “an exhibit refresh” in its upstairs area. DPHS Foundation Hosts Class of 2020 Prom

O

VER A YEAR AFTER THEIR PROM WAS CANCELLED, the Dos Pueblos High School Class of 2020 finally had the opportunity to celebrate their senior prom. Hosted by the DPHS Foundation on August 2nd at the Kimpton Canary Hotel’s rooftop, 172 alumni were able to reunite to enjoy dancing, music, and food.

“The Foundation thought it was important to honor its commitment to create an event for the Class of 2020 when things opened up a bit more,” said Rechelle Ringer, DPHS Foundation President. “We polled the students to see what type of event they wanted and the message was loud and clear: they wanted the prom they had missed out on in May of 2020. So that is what we set out to do.”

Through the generosity of community members and students’ parents, the DPHS Foundation was able to cover the majority of the evening’s costs, providing a photo booth from AMS Events and music from DJ Hecktik. The Kimpton Canary served delicious hors d’oeuvres and “mocktails,” while La Bella Rosa Bakery donated a collection of desserts. Students also received alumni t-shirts from the DPHS Alumni Association, and the DPHS gave away gift cards collectively amounting to over $2,000.

Following the evening’s festivities, the DPHS Alumni Association announced that it would be offering a 50 percent discount on its lifetime membership fees through the end of August. Through joining, Class of 2020 members will be able to stay connected and help plan events such as their special prom for years to come.

SB City Council Adopts Natural Gas Prohibition Ordinance for New Buildings

I

N A MEANINGFUL MOVE TOWARD REALIZING CARBON NEUTRALITY BY 2035, the Santa Barbara City Council has adopted an ordinance that prohibits the installation of natural gas infrastructure in new buildings. The ordinance will apply to projects with a building permit application submitted after January 1st, 2022, and only apply to newly constructed buildings.

“Buildings are long term assets that essentially lock in their greenhouse gas emissions for decades,” said Energy and Climate Manager, Alelia Parenteau.

“Therefore, designing green buildings provides an important opportunity to reduce emissions in the long run.”

Energy use in buildings is responsible for about 40 percent of Santa Barbara’s greenhouse gas emissions, with that percentage being divided between natural gas and electricity. Accordingly, curbing the expansion of natural gas infrastructure will have lasting, positive effects for the environment.

O SHARE ITS OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES WITH THE LARGER COMMUNITY, the Santa Barbara Police Department has launched its new video series, Upfront with SBPD. The first episode, which centers around homelessness in our community and SBPD’s responses, is now available for online viewing. Going forward, additional topics will include Community Liaison Officers, recruitment and retention, patrol officers who work the “graveyard shift,” and officers’ response to opiate overdoses.

City of SB Utility Billing Office Closure

T

he City of Santa Barbara’s Utility Billing Office will be closed between 4pm Thursday, August 26th to 12pm Monday, August 30th to undergo an upgrade to the City’s billing software. During this time, individuals will not be able to pay utility bills online or in person, and staff will not be available to answer customer phone calls.

SBCC Foundation Appoints New Board Members

T

HE SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION has named four individuals to its Board of Directors. Made up of eleven community members, this board offers key leadership for the foundation in its work. www.sbccfoundation.org

DANIEL EMMETT currently serves as the CEO of Next Energy Technologies. Dedicated to improving energy efficiency and the environment, he previously worked as the Managing Director of Innovo Energy Solutions Group as well as the Executive Director of Energy Independence Now. He is a board member of both the Environmental Defense Center and the UCLA Law Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. Emmett earned Daniel Emmett his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Economics from UC Santa Cruz, and his master’s degree in international Development Policy from Stanford University.

MADELEINE JACOBSON is a director-atlarge with the SBCC Foundation, previously serving as board president, chair of the governance committee, and development chair.

She moved to Santa Barbara from Boston 15 years ago, where she worked with the Children’s Hospital League, a fundraising organization for Boston Children’s Hospital. Locally, her experiences have included serving as a Court Madeleine Jacobson Appointed Special Advocate with the CASA organization. Jacobson earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications from Boston University.

BEN SCOTT is the Senior Vice President, Director of Commercial Banking at Montecito Bank & Trust. Holding nearly 20 years of experience in the field of financial services, he has worked with Montecito Bank & Trust for the past 13 years. An alumnus of Carpinteria High School, Scott is well acquainted with the local community, and serves as a Board of Directors member for the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County and Ben Scott Jordanos, Inc. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Government and Economics from Claremont McKenna College.

DR. KATHY SCOTT, SBCC’s Interim Executive Vice President, Educational Programs, has joined the board as an ex officio member.

Her past experiences include serving as the Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs at Long Beach City College and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pasadena City College. She was also an Instructional Dean, Title V grant director, and the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness at Ventura College.

Dr. Kathy Scott Scott earned her master’s degree in Literature from Cal State Northridge, and her Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Cal Lutheran University.

Air Quality Watch in Santa Barbara County

HE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District encourage Santa Barbara County residents to stay aware of local air quality conditions. Wildfires throughout the western United States are producing significant smoke that is being transported around the country, including to our area. Currently, smoke is hovering in the upper atmosphere over the county and creating hazy visual conditions. The smoke is not reaching ground-level, and air quality monitors are showing good-to-moderate conditions. However, this is a dynamic situation, and local air quality conditions can change quickly. All Santa Barbara County residents are encouraged to stay alert to local conditions by visiting www.ourair.org/todays-air-quality or fire.airnow.gov.

Levels of smoke and particles, and areas affected, will vary. If you see or smell smoke in the air, be cautious and use common sense to protect your and your family’s health. Everyone, especially people with heart or lung conditions, older adults, pregnant women, and children, should limit time spent outdoors and avoid outdoor exercise when high concentrations of smoke and particles are in the air.

When air quality reaches unhealthy levels, and/or if you see or smell smoke, we recommend that everyone:

• Head indoors and remain indoors, as much as possible • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity • Close all windows and doors that lead outside to prevent bringing additional smoke inside • Avoid driving when possible and use “recycle” or re-circulate mode to avoid drawing smoky air into the car • Drink plenty of fluids to keep respiratory membranes moist • If you are an essential worker and must work outside during wildfire smoke conditions, the use of a properly fitted N-95 mask provides protection

When wildfire smoke is affecting your area, create a “clean air room” to keep indoor air quality safe. The best protection against wildfire smoke is to stay indoors as much as possible when smoke is present. If you have symptoms that may be related to exposure to smoke and soot, contact your doctor.

Symptoms include repeated coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, and nausea or unusual fatigue or lightheadedness.

The Sunset Soirée will be hosted at the Alpha Resource Center’s Outdoor Gardens, located at 4501 Cathedral Oaks Road. A not-to-be-missed event, guests will enjoy jazz music by La Musique Unique, a threecourse dinner provided by Omni Catering, and premium wine pairings presented by wine expert John Tilson. Tilson will also lead a tribute for the late Jim Clendenen, who formerly presented his stellar wines at the Sunset Soirée.

There will also be a silent auction featuring gift baskets, fine items, and works of art created by local artists. These art pieces will be shown via Hillside’s website in the coming weeks, as well as displayed in-person at the Sunset Soirée. A live auction of exciting local opportunities, including a two-night weekend stay at a 20-acre ranch in Los Olivos and a gourmet wine dinner for six guests at a Montecito estate is also on the menu.

OR 75 YEARS, HILLSIDE has played a vital role in the lives of dozens of community members and their families. A residential facility for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, 59 individuals currently call Hillside home. Now, the community at large is invited to celebrate and support Hillside by attending its 17th annual Sunset Soirée from 3:30 to 7pm on Saturday, September 25th.

“I have never looked back and asked myself if I would have done things differently,” shared local artist Jessika Cardinahl, whose daughter, Sophie, has lived at Hillside for 17 years. “Hillside has provided not only for Sophie, but for our whole family — it has given us a life filled with trust and love.”

She further emphasized Hillside’s commitment to Sophie and her fellow residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining how the staff continued their dedicated care and organized video calls for her to virtually visit with her daughter.

their website states, “Our buggies provide fun for everybody who wants an exciting adventurous and enjoyable way to explore Santa Barbara.” No kidding... and they move! How many times have I seen people, complete with helmets, cruising around the entire city in those fun rides.

Of course there are many ways to get around the harbor and the waterfront areas that preclude the frustrating job of finding a parking spot. My quest on Sunday was to investigate the fun rides I see on the weekends that bring so much joy to so many. I’m thinking that it might be a good idea to be a tourist for a day and take advantage of what Santa Barbara has to offer. Based on what I’ve seen, I encourage you to do that too!

Community News SB City Council appoints Rebecca Bjork Interim City Administrator

M

OVING UP THROUGH THE RANKS OF THE CITY over the last 32 years, Rebecca Bjork will assume the title of interim City Administrator effective September 11, 2021. Bjork, who was appointed by City Council, brings continuity and a deep knowledge of City operations to the day-to-day management of the City operations.

“I am honored to be asked to take on this very important role while the Council searches for the next City Administrator. I will work with our excellent executive team to continue to make improvements to City operations and services,” Bjork related.

Bjork has worked with the City of Santa Barbara for more than 32 years most recently serving as the Interim Community Development Rebecca Bjork Director, initiating work with the Council Sub-Committee to simplify the land development process. She has also been instrumental in the work to address homelessness and homeless encampments during the pandemic.

Bjork, prior to that, served as the Public Works Director, overseeing the largest City department for over five years with nearly 300 employees and

a budget totaling $138 million. The Public Works Department includes the City’s water and wastewater utilities, transportation planning, downtown parking, street maintenance, capital project design and construction, fleet services, and maintenance of over 100 City buildings and facilities.

She directed staff and guided the City’s response during the most recent multi-year drought.

From 2007 to 2014, she served as Water Resources Manager with responsibility for water and wastewater utilities, which included the operation and maintenance of the Cater Water Treatment Plant and the El Estero Wastewater Treatment Plant.

She oversaw the introduction of ozonation at the Water Treatment Plant to improve the quality and taste of drinking water.

Throughout her tenure, she has been instrumental in various renewal and replacement projects for water and wastewater mains, street infrastructure, and major facilities to extend the life of the City’s essential infrastructure.

The City Council will conduct an executive search and recruitment for the next City Administrator, a process anticipated to take approximately six months.

Jan Campbell Retiring From Domestic Violence Solutions JAN CAMPBELL has announced that she will retire from her position as Executive Director of Domestic Violence Solutions this December. She has held this role since 2018, and has successfully guided the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic and ensured it can continue to serve hundreds of survivors of domestic violence. She also led DVS through its establishing Jan Campbell a job and life skills program to support clients in attaining education, employment, and financial information for achieving independence. Last year, Campbell was named the Junior League of Santa Barbara’s 2020 Woman of the Year for her dedication to the community. www.dvsolutions.org

Mental Wellness Center Board Welcomes Alice Villarreal Redit ALICE VILLARREAL REDIT has joined the Mental Wellness Center’s Board of Directors. A born and raised Santa Barbara local, she has worked with the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara since 1997. She first worked in the Authority’s Housing Management Alice Villarreal Redit Department before assuming her current position as Resident Programs Supervisor. In this role, she oversees the department’s operations to ensure that it continues to best serve community members in need.

As of August 17th, booster services to local junior high and high schools have resumed to accommodate area students. However, it is worth noting that pick-up and drop-off times have experienced changes in accordance with the new Santa Barbara Unified School District’s bell schedule. Once Santa Barbara City College and UC Santa Barbara students return to campus on August 23rd and September 20th, respectively, Line 16 (SBCC Shuttle) will offer full service, while Lines 15x (SBCC/UCSB Express) and 28 (UCSB Shuttle) will have reduced service. Line 27 (Isla Vista Shuttle) will continue its reduced schedule for the time being.

Balancing Well-Made Films with Ethical Issues: Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, Stillwater, Bring Your Own Brigade

The film also shows the true denialism and stubbornness of those facing disaster with reverberations hinting at political and pandemic issues.

Some people do not connect with the fact that there are multiple reasons for increasing wildfires, others, as director Walker shows, are aware of the threat and dangers. Native American fire prevention forestry practices are described and demonstrated in the film and the film is well made enough to find a delicate balance among attitudes and learned experience.

However, it also includes a real-life recording of people getting burned in a bathtub within the Paradise community that was devasting to listen to.

Ethically, audiences may wonder why the filmmaker included that tragic interlude. And, sure enough, the creators do defend including the awful moment. However, it brings into question the filmmakers’ judgments about what to subject audiences to, in this case, a disaster within a disaster tale.

This film’s themes and educational components were infinitely compelling regarding this planetary, on the ground predicament and some hopeful measures and the wide variety of reactions and descriptions were valuable to witness. The filmmaker makes the audience feel as though they were on the front line of the two main infernos. Despite the ethical question about inclusion of the bathtub recording, Bring Your Own Brigade is an important film to see, to gain some understanding of problems that will only begin to multiply in the years ahead. n

However, in this situation, one of the real-life proponents has been vocal about being misrepresented by the film and is calling foul, along with other minor controversies that the star Matt Damon aroused in one of the interviews preceding the release. This may endanger the potential reception of what was a straightforward, hand-held camera drama with many intriguing twists and turns. At a preview reception director McCarthy mentioned how fascinating it was to work alongside French filmmakers, how deeply enriching his experience was working on location in Marseilles, and how he leaves certain plot twists up to the audience to form their own conclusions. A film this solidly pieced together should not be tarnished by controversy around the edges, as the film was made with an open heart and is not particularly derogatory in any way to the main characters who were based on real

life. The characters inhabit their own cinema spaces and hopefully the film can stand up solidly in a world full of questions. The film is not a documentary, but borrows many techniques from documentary filmmaking and French films about the seediness that can be found in the port city of Marseilles, a trip to the underground urban miasma that is fascinating to dramatize.

The cast is phenomenal, especially Abigail Breslin, as the daughter convicted of a murder and superbly supported by French actors including Camille Cottin as Matt Damon’s love interest. Worth seeing, even with the minor controversies that are currently playing out on social media.

Bring Your Own Brigade

is a documentary helmed by Lucy Walker that straddles the devasting fires that have been emerging in the era of climate change in Northern California. It looks at the Camp Fire,

Economic VOICE Why So Many Job Openings?

HE NUMBER OF JOB OPENINGS INCREASED to a series high of 10.1 million on the last business day of June (yellow line on CR graph), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Monday (August 9th, 2021).

It seems many working-age adults aren’t ready to return to work for several reasons, based on early data from Ziprecruiter, an online employment agency. About 13 million Americans are currently receiving unemployment benefits. In some states, they stand to lose them if they don’t actively search for work. That’s because some states have reimposed work search requirements that were waived in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ziprecruiter lists which states are terminating unemployment benefits early. “Early indications are that (unemployment) benefits have had some effect on job search, but the effect is likely rather small because there are other things that are keeping people out of the labor force,” said Julia Pollak, chief economist at Santa Monica, California-based Ziprecruiter, cited in a MarketWatch article.

She also lists some obvious reasons: The pandemic, which is resurgent in much of the country, and childcare, which has caused droves of workers — largely women — to stop working. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas puts this number at 1.3 million.

The Dallas Fed says 31 percent of workers are reluctant, for whatever reason, to return to their previous job. It’s a data point that has increased slowly but steadily for more than a year.

Hires rose to 6.7 million and total separations edged up to 5.6 million in the JOLTS report, which tells us there were one million new hires in July, which then is seasonally adjusted to give the actual unemployment report. Within separations, the quits rate increased to 2.7 percent. The layoffs and discharges rate was unchanged at 0.9 percent, matching the series low reached last month, which tells us that employers are reluctant to lay off anybody with the current labor shortage.

in pandemic aid already flowing through the economy, so they can afford to look for better job choices with higher pay and benefits.

The Conference Board’s jobs-plentiful index increased to a 21-year high of 54.9, for starters, and wages and salaries at the bottom end of salaried workers are rising at the fastest clip since the pandemic.

“Consumers’ appraisal of present-day conditions held steady, suggesting economic growth in Q3 is off to a strong start,” said Lynn Franco, Senior Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. “Consumers’ optimism about the short-term outlook didn’t waver, and they continued to expect that business conditions, jobs, and personal financial prospects will improve.”

American workers are perhaps in the best place in decades to take advantage of this economic recovery.

AFETY CONCERNS in the real estate profession have made headlines recently.

Tragic news reports about the shooting death of a building inspector and wounding of other real estate professionals in Huntington Beach last week reminds us that showing properties can turn dangerous. According to a 2020 National Association of REALTORS Member Safety Report, one third of NAR members have felt unsafe during an open house or a showing. That is why it is imperative that our members take safety precautions and have a safety plan in place. Many of these measures will make our clients feel safer, too, creating a better environment for everyone.

A safety plan can address common scenarios that place real estate professionals in potentially risky situations, such as meeting new clients, showing properties, or hosting an open house. Elements of a safety plan might include practices such as driving separately from Brian Johnson, clients, arriving early to unlock doors, and making note of escape SBAOR President routes. REALTORS and clients alike should let someone know where you’re going and who you’ll be with at all times. REALTORS should be familiar with safety protocols provided by your brokerage.

Technology now offers more solutions to help keep you safe. Advances in smart phone technology allow for apps and other tools that can confirm someone’s identity, conduct an instant background check, or track your location and share that information with trusted individuals. Always be aware of the terms and conditions of these tools to make sure you’re using them in a legal and ethical manner. It is a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act to use a background check for discriminatory purposes when making decisions about credit or tenant screening.

Finally, it is imperative to report any incidents that do occur to local law enforcement.

By doing so you will help to keep yourself and others safe by alerting law enforcement to potential dangers. Keeping everyone safe will allow us to continue to provide the best service to our clients, and be responsible community citizens.

ASTE BUDS TINGLING and looking for a new restaurant to enjoy? The new MICHELIN Guide is suggesting you try these three local restaurants and has added them to their coveted guide, it was announced Wednesday.

Two of the restaurants, Bibi Ji and Loquita are located in Santa Barbara, and the third, Caruso’s, is in Montecito.

“I am excited to share new additions to the MICHELIN Guide California in the central coast, ahead of the announcement of Bib Gourmands and Stars in late September,” commented Lauren McClure, with Michelin North America.

HE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA BARBARA Master of Fine Arts 2020 cohort exhibition Unending will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara with a reception on Saturday, August 21st, from 6 to 8pm. Originally intended as the culmination of their 2020 MFA degrees, these artists take up the personal and cultural cycles of grief and transformation in order to congeal a new vision.

“Unending is a registration of the past broken by the present, allowing for deeper contemplation and immersion to take place. This exhibition showcases the collapse of time, tradition, and production, culminating in something more slowly realized and returned to,” according the a release.

On view from Saturday, August 21st through to Sunday, September 12th, the exhibition features the work of Serene Blumenthal, Kio Griffith, Megan Koth, Marshall Sharpe, Thomas Stoeckinger, and David Wesley White, working across the mediums of sculpture, photography, installation, video, and painting.
