For the second year in a row, Santa Barbara Walk to End Alzheimer’s volunteers and participants have shown an inspiring resilience in the face of difficult and unprecedented times to continue fighting for a cause that means so much to this community.

Gerd Jordano is the Walk’s Honorary Chair One remarkable story is that of Team Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative (AWI), a strong group of women who managed to raise over $68,000 last year as a novice team and have set a bold goal to raise $180,000 this year.

Beyond their recent involvement in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, AWI has been raising funds and awareness throughout the Santa Barbara community for nearly a decade. Members have actively contributed to the cause by putting on annual luncheons to generate incredible generosity and support, as well as participating in other areas of

the Alzheimer’s Association like the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement and serving on the board for the local California Central Coast Chapter.

AWI was founded locally in 2012 amongst a friend group of philanthropists and health care workers looking to further support the mission to end Alzheimer’s disease – a disease that primarily affects women. Almost two thirds of the population living with the disease in the United States are women.

One of AWI’s co-founders, Gerd Jordano, has taken the role as Honorary Chair for this year’s Santa Barbara Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

AWI member Leigh Cashman is walking in honor of her father and other loved ones who have passed away from Alzheimer’s. As an Alzheimer’s Advocate and Chapter Board Member, Leigh is passionate about making positive changes for increased support and research towards a cure.

“I think we all have that passion to find a cure when we are hit hard with the disease,” Leigh said. “The Walk is a great opportunity to keep everyone engaged in this fight; it doesn’t end because of other things going on and we are here to make a difference.”

Today, more than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million.

Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging.

Instead, it is a progressive brain disease that tragically affects memory, thinking, and behavior, worsening over time to interfere with daily tasks and eventually leading to death.

Community News DPHS Foundation Launches Charger Champions Circle Campaign

T

O BEST SUPPORT STUDENTS AND DOS PUEBLOS HIGH SCHOOL’S OPERATIONS, the Dos Pueblos High School Foundation has launched its first annual fundraising campaign, the “Charger Champions Circle.”

Holding the goal of raising $50,000 by Thanksgiving, the campaign will support the school’s operating income as well as offer opportunities for facilities and program improvement projects through DPHS Foundation grants.

“As a relatively new organization, the work of the Foundation to date has been focused on smaller, short-term projects, but we have spent the past year reevaluating our priorities and establishing a plan for sustainable fundraising,” shared DPHS Foundation President Rechelle Ringer. “Significant work has gone into getting us to this moment, so we are excited to launch the Charger Champion Circle campaign and are looking forward to seeing our community’s response.”

DPHS currently serves about 2,000 local students. By attending DPHS, students have the opportunity to attend DHPS’ many high quality academic programs, including dual enrollment in partnership with Santa Barbara City College, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Honors, Special Education, English Learner, and Career Technical Education, which includes its popular Engineering Academy.

As of this year, about 38 percent of DPHS students have been identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. Combined with the local high cost of living, community support plays a key role in seeing that students and teachers have the equipment they need to have the best possible learning experience.

SB Museum of Natural History Calls for Volunteer Educators

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is currently seeking volunteer educators to inform and empower the next generation through leading tours, facilitating school programs, and interpreting interactive exhibits. “If you just get one person, they find out something they didn’t know — sometimes it’s simple, like the fact that there’s scientific equipment on Mars or that we had mammoths here — it’s worth it for that ‘aha moment.’ That’s why we’re here,” shared museum docent Glenn Grayson, who has been educating at the museum for five years.

Individuals of all ages and backgrounds are invited to volunteer, with no prior experience necessary. Bilingual English/Spanish individuals are especially appreciated by museum guests.

City of SB Releases Tax Results

T

HE CITY OF SANTA BARBARA REPORTED THIS WEEK that it collected $3,079,876 in transient occupancy taxes in July 2021. These TOT revenues were $1.9 million above the amount collected in July 2020. In comparison to July 2019, this year’s July revenues were 29% higher — although the City stated that this is due mostly to increased average daily rates.

“The local travel industry is now seeing increases in demand for rooms relative to recent months that is likely to continue throughout the summer months as the State has lifted travel advisories and as access to vaccinations has become more widely available,” read the City of Santa Barbara’s announcement.

Ridley-Tree Breast Surgeon Offers Breastfeeding Support to Local Mothers

A

S BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS MONTH DRAWS TO A CLOSE, Dr. Katrina Mitchell continues to support Santa Barbara mothers as they navigate breastfeeding their children. A breast surgeon and certified lactation consultant working at Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, Dr. Mitchell currently offers a free prenatal breastfeeding class and private consultations to all interested local women.

“We know that in many cases women do not breastfeed as long as they intend to, due to complications. If we can come alongside mothers and help them, this greatly increases their chances of breastfeeding for longer periods,” said Dr. Mitchell.

It has been found that one in five new mothers experience depression and/or anxiety within the first year of their baby’s life. Frequently, breastfeeding challenges contribute to these experiences, with challenges including infection, maintaining or increasing milk supply, nipple pain, and the difficulties of continuing pumping when they resume work. Accordingly, Dr. Mitchell, along with her Ridley-Tree team of nurses and medical assistants, aim to support local mothers and help them with whatever challenges they may be facing. She is further certified perinatal mental health, and is able to provide evaluation and treatment for prenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety.

District Attorney and UCSB Police Begin Joint Sexual Assault Investigation

D

ISTRICT ATTORNEY JOYCE E. DUDLEY AND THE UC SANTA BARBARA POLICE DEPARTMENT have announced that they have begun a joint sexual assault investigation focusing on Arian Eteghaei. To date, UCPD detectives have already identified multiple sexual assault survivors, and Eteghaei has been accordingly charged with several counts of sexual assault.

However, there may be other assault survivors or witnesses who are yet to be contacted. Individuals who have information pertaining to this investigation are encouraged to call Santa Barbara County District Attorney Investigator Judith Hall at 805-568-2360.

“The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office is well aware that survivors of sexual assault and abuse are often reluctant to come forward for a variety of reasons,” stated District Attorney Dudley. “With that in mind, we have many resources available through our Victim/Witness Assistance Division where our advocates will endeavor to ensure that the needs of survivors are not overshadowed by our focus on the investigation and prosecution of the accused. Victim Advocates are also available to ensure that survivors are kept informed and supported throughout the criminal justice process.”

Experience an evening of local music legends as rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket plays two live performances at the Lobero Theatre at 8pm Saturday, September 4th and Sunday, September 5th. Featuring vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, and bassist Dean Dinning, the band has created beloved tracks such as Walk on the Ocean, All I Want, and Something’s Always Wrong for 30 years.

Joining Toad the Wet Sprocket is alternative rock group SUMMERCAMP. Also a locally-formed band, its members include vocalists/guitarists Tim Cullen and Sean McCue, bassist Misha Feldmann, and drummer Tony Sevener.

Best known for their single Drawer, the group has toured across the United States, Japan, and Europe. SB Museum of Art Welcomes Back Community Members

pieces, SBMA has now opened its first gallery dedicated solely to contemporary art. Located on the second story, the gallery currently features a selection of sculptures and paintings that reflect — literally and thematically — light from the gallery’s skylight. Another contemporary gallery is also located downstairs, letting the museum incorporate a diverse selection of artists, styles, and messages.

“I was really concerned to have a diverse offering — artists of color, women artists, and also art and artists who just haven’t been shown, they’ve been on the racks in the basement for a long time,” said James Glisson, Curator of Contemporary Art. The museum’s second floor features two additional galleries: one devoted to photography and one new media gallery. Featuring photographs by Inge Morath, compelling photographed portraits, and captivating videos of monarch butterflies and nature-focused scenes, each room forces visitors to confront how we increasingly view the world around us via technology.

“We feel like the whole museum is completely transformed now,” shared Eik Kahng, Deputy Director and Chief Curator. “Also, with the refreshed installations of the permanent collection, I think it gives you a completely different sense of how rich our museum really is, and after having been largely closed for so many years, this is going to feel really good to see people looking at the art again.”

SBMA members had the first opportunity to view the new and improved galleries during the museum’s members-only day on August 14th with over 800 visitors.

The following morning, a Grand Reopening welcomed back the larger community with live music, art activities, and free admission and over 1,200 guests. Several downtown businesses also joined in the fun by offering special discounts with proof of museum admission.

Upon entering the museum’s main entrance, Ludington Court, visitors immediately appreciated the

gallery’s architectural and artistic changes. Fashioned in a traditional salon-style, the installation gracefully blends pieces across cultures and periods — from 17th to 20th century paintings to Pre-Columbian and African antiquities — to provide an immediate look at the museum’s diverse collection.

Meanwhile, the court’s backdrop boasts graceful arches that grant glimpses into adjacent galleries and a new staircase leading to upstairs galleries. Posed in the center is SBMA’s infamous Lansdowne Hermes, with a bench allowing visitors to sit at his feet.

“My idea was that when you walk in the State Street entrance and you stand over by the pedestal where Hermes is, or sit and decide what you want to do, you will have these great sight lines that beckon you from all sides,” explained Kahng.

To the left of Hermes, over 5,000 years worth of history and culture are represented by the museum’s Asian Art collection. Spanning China, Japan, and Korea, the collection features vessels, sculptures, paintings, and more, with subjects ranging from being religiously inspired to secular themes.

“I really think they [visitors] will be surprised at the quantity and also the quality of the pieces we have for a museum our size in a town this size,” commented Susan Tai, Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian Art. Also dedicated to showcasing modern

SBMA will continue celebrating its reopening by hosting a series of free “Art Making for All Ages” events on August 28th and 29th. Free and open to the public, participants will explore and craft different art styles and materials.

The museum will also work toward continuing its role as a cultural leader within Santa Barbara, with both current and future efforts to expand its collections to better reflect our society.

“We hope that it just becomes a cultural forum,” shared Larry J. Feinberg, Robert and Mercedes Eicholz Director. “And increasingly we’re trying to represent in the spirit of DEIA – greater diversity and inclusion – and bringing more cultures and different voices into the museum, that sort of represents our community, and the larger community, larger global community.”

HIS WEEKEND’S WEATHER WAS A TAD DREARY - NO SUN, NOT COLD, NOT HOT... just not inviting for a Sunday outing, so I made a quick trip to Butterfly Beach. While on my walk, I was reminded of the more frequent high tides eroding the California coastlines, tides that limited the strand on Butterfly Beach that day to a few feet. Beach goers were pressed against the wall on what was left. And the highest tide of the day was yet to come.

In general, the national (and global) weather seems to reflect the uncertainties of our time. As I write, hurricanes and tropical storms have made their way up the eastern seaboard as far as Massachusetts and Maine.

Drought here in the west, massive rainfall and storm surges in the southeast represent the extremes in weather we are experiencing. Here in Santa Barbara, quickly changing temperatures and weather patterns combined with the smoke floating down from the northwest’s extreme fire outbreaks is definitely different from what we considered to be “normal” in the “Before Days.” And, resting on the shore of the mighty Pacific, our community is not unfamiliar with Mother Nature’s whims.

Since this column focuses on Santa Barbara’s harbor and beaches, I decided to do little research on climate change and its present and future effects on the waterfront. Living by the sea we are obviously vulnerable to the rising sea levels predicted by scientists as a result of the rapidly melting glaciers. I was curious as to what, if any, future planning had been undertaken to mitigate the effects of the rising sea. With the image of Butterfly Beach still in my mind, and the addition of last weekend’s huge full blue moon adding to the higher tides, I learned that a good deal of investigation and planning have been underway for quite some time.

That sea levels are rising and will continue to increase in the future is without question, according to the Waterfront Department’s pages on the City of Santa Barbara’s website. The physical risks to Santa Barbara’s coastal zone include shoreline erosion and degradation, decreased beach widths, and storm surges as coastal flood waters spread inland. There is a need for our community to understand this emerging issue, analyze the risks, and consider possible actions to prepare and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Early this year, in February 2021, the city adopted a Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan that identifies areas vulnerable to sea level rise and recommends potential actions that can be taken to adapt over time. The Adaptation Plan outlines a phased approach to planning for sea level rise based on monitoring changing shoreline conditions to reduce vulnerabilities. The Adaptation Plan includes detailed recommendations for necessary actions and provides a structure for future decision making.

The rate of sea level rise in the Santa Barbara region is expected to accelerate significantly according to a Vulnerability Assessment. Three scenarios were presented in the Assessment: by the year 2030 the sea level rise would be 0.8 feet, by 2060, 2.5 feet and by 2100 a whopping 6.6 feet. These sea level rise values even have a chance of being exceeded unless existing levels of greenhouse gas emissions are not significantly reduced, hardly a surprise based on the unpredictability of the current weather patterns. How’s that for a real eye opener?

My trip to Butterfly Beach that afternoon was a mild reminder of what is to come without a united effort to mitigate the climate changes in our present day. The beauty of our coastline is something we all wish to preserve. Environmental awareness and the importance of my personal choices are the results of a simple walk on the beach that day.

August 23: An ATTEMPTED MURDER suspect was arrested after a brief standoff in Goleta. Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Goleta man for the attempted murder of his roommate in the 5700-block of Aguila Avenue. K9’s, air support, and a Special Enforcement Team were called in.

EconomicVOICE Strong July Retail Sales

T

HE DOW PLUNGED MORE THAN 400 POINTS at Tuesday’s [August 17] opening, because retail sales were “weaker,” per the consensus estimate of pundits. But it was in large part because of lower new car sales, due to a shortage of computer chips.

In fact, the demand for both new and used cars is soaring. The average new car price hit a record $38,255 in May, according to JD Power, up twelve percent from the same period a year ago, and the cost of used cars and trucks has soared by 32 percent in the first six months of 2021. By contrast, their prices fell by an average of 0.6 percent a year from 2009 to 2019, which is a better way to look at sales activity, says MarketWatch.

And if the pundits looked just a bit further, they would know that auto manufactures are racing to meet the demand by not taking the normal summer factory shutdown to retool for new models.

So it is really good news that demand is running so high for autos, and restaurants, and gasoline products, as consumers are traveling more in the summer months.

Overall U.S. industrial production rose a seasonally adjusted 0.9 percent in July, the Federal Reserve reported Tuesday, and manufacturing activity alone rose 1.4 percent in July, boosted by an 11.2 percent jump in output of those motor vehicles and parts.

Even with that, auto production remains about 3.5 percent below its recent peak in January.

It will take several months to play catchup, when additional computer chips used in autos are manufactured. US chip manufacturers such as Intel are part of the chip shortage caught by the surprise surge in demand.

But as the long-term FRED graph shows, retail sales are still far above the historical five percent annual increase.

“Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for July 2021, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $617.7 billion, a decrease of 1.1 percent from the previous month, but 15.8 percent above July 2020, reported the U.S. Census Bureau.

Market investors in particular should take a step back from the unrelenting news headlines that react to every piece of bad and good news without looking between the lines.

The U.S. economy grew at a blistering pace in the spring and repaired most of the damage caused by the pandemic thanks to widespread coronavirus vaccinations and a nearly full reopening of the economy, as I said recently.

The Q2 GDP report verifies that the American economy is capable of easily accommodating the Biden administration’s proposed infrastructure and American Family plan spending of some $4 trillion in additional government investments should they be passed in their present form.

Still, we cannot ignore the soaring hospitalizations from the Delta variant that will slow down some economic activity through the fall. We won’t know until school openings how the Delta variant will affect school children and teaching staff, for starters. And many essential workers are hanging back because of the variant’s surge.

The CDC says, “The current 7-day moving average of daily new cases (114,190) increased 18.4 percent compared with the previous 7-day moving average (96,454). The current 7-day moving average is 66.3 percent higher compared to the peak observed on July 20, 2020 (68,685). (But) The current 7-day moving average is 65.0 percent lower than the peak observed on January 10, 2021 (254,023).”

So we can only hope that the latest rise in vaccinations and addition of a third booster shot for the most vulnerable that is already widely available in pharmacies will prevent further damage.

UYING A HOME IN SANTA BARBARA can be a difficult proposition. With home prices at record highs some buyers have find it difficult to come up with all of the upfront costs when trying to close on a home.

However, there is an organization that has worked over the last three decades to help with those upfront costs. Coastal Housing Partnership is a nonprofit started in 1987 by a group of local employers. They were looking for a way to battle the difficulty of attracting and retaining employees in our expensive market.

Community Raises $30,000 to Replace Destroyed Little League Equipment

OLLOWING THE LOSS OF DOS PUEBLOS LITTLE LEAGUE’S SHED in a suspected arson fire, the Santa Barbara community rallied to raise $30,000 in a mere four days to replace necessary equipment. The fire took place earlier this month at Girsh Park in Goleta, and destroyed the shed holding DPLL’s field equipment, pitching machines, and other supplies.

Yet thanks to a donation matching campaign from American Riviera Bank and the generosity of several community figures, DPLL has met its fundraising goal.

“This is the Central Coast community at its finest,” said Jeff DeVine, President and Chief Executive Officer at American Riviera Bank. “We couldn’t be prouder of what we were able to accomplish in such a short time. DPLL has been serving our community for almost 50 years – our community showed up to express their appreciation this week.”

DPLL has played and stored their equipment in a shed at Girsh Park since 1997. The nonprofit has been an important community organization for close to 50 years, touching the lives of countless young players, families, and fans.

American Riviera Bank began its donation matching campaign on August 20th, informing the community that it would match donations up to $7,500. An additional $14,000 in support was donated by the City of Goleta, Daniel and Mandy Hochman, Mark Linehan of Camino Real Marketplace, Goleta Mayor Pro Tempore James Kyriaco, and County Supervisors Joan Hartmann and Greg Hart.

Ultimately, on the evening of August 23rd, DPLL announced that it had received the $30,000 needed to replace both the destroyed shed and the lost equipment.

My Best Life Youth Cannabis Education Campaign Launches

O SPREAD AWARENESS ON THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF YOUTH CANNABIS USE, County Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention & Cannabis Education program has launched a new Youth Cannabis Education campaign. Titled My Best Life, the series features Santa Barbara County youth ages 14 to 21 sharing how they are living healthy, positive, and active lives without using cannabis.

“My Best Life involves local youth sharing their stories and aspirations in hopes of inspiring others to reach their highest potential by not using cannabis products while their brain and body are still developing,” said Renata Valladares, Health Educator with Tobacco Prevention & Cannabis Education.

“Our goal is to educate local youth on the negative and harmful effects of underage cannabis use, while showing them that their best life now is drug-free.”

This series is especially important given the negative and harmful effects of regular cannabis use or if a person starts using cannabis before they are 18 years of age. On a physical level, underage cannabis use can lead to slower brain development, place a student at higher risk for memory loss an impaired learning, damage lungs, and affect their mental health, especially by increasing anxiety disorders and depression among teenagers.

Ultimately, research shows that regular or underage cannabis use can lead to a student being at higher risk for getting lower grades, skipping classes, or not being able to have the job they desire.

FFERING UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO THE ARTISTIC PROCESS of some of Santa Barbara’s most talented artists, the Santa Barbara Studio Artists’ Annual Open Studios Tour will once again welcome community members this Labor Day weekend. A local tradition for 20 years, participants will be able to meet and explore the studios of 28 artists at their leisure throughout the weekend. All ticket sales will benefit the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, making this event a community celebration.

“It’s an opportunity to explore the art that’s going on in your own hometown,” said artist Dorothy ChurchillJohnson, a Santa Barbara Studio Artists founding board member and former President. “It’ll expose you

to new artists and to some very interesting and beautiful work.”

Founded in 2000, Santa Barbara Studio Artists is a nonprofit made up of professional artists who have working studios within the Santa Barbara area. The organization works toward not only promoting awareness for local artists and their work, but for Santa Barbara as an arts destination overall.

To kick off this year’s Open Studios Tour, there will be an opening reception held from 5 to 8pm on Friday, September 3rd at the Community Arts Workshop, located at 631 Garden Street. There, attendees will meet participating artists, view their works, enjoy appetizers, and decide which studios they wish to visit. The displayed artwork will continue to be shown at the Community Arts Workshop throughout the weekend.

To support community members in need amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Barbara Studio Artists will donate all ticket sales proceeds to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. Tickets are $25, with free admission for children aged 12 and under.

However, individuals without tour tickets can attend the opening reception for $10.

Tour attendees will then have the opportunity to visit any of the 28 participating

artists’ studios between 11am5pm Saturday and Sunday, September 4th and 5th, and from 11am-2pm Monday, September 6th. Each artist will personally host their respective studio’s tours, allowing visitors to view their creative environment, finished works, and any works in progress they wish to share. Some artists also work during the tour period so visitors can better understand and ask questions about their creative process.

“As an artist, you try not to create based on what you think others might like, or want to buy. You try to create from deep within, but when someone likes what you’re doing, it offers an incredible sense of validation.

That’s what happens in the studio tour,” shared artist Lisa Crane. “The attendees enjoy a day of looking at beauty, and in so doing, they validate us as humans and artists, and they give us reason to do it.” n

Many participating artists appreciate the chance to connect with community members and learn how their art impacts them.

“I’ve always enjoyed An abstract piece by Pamela Benham working in the studio, the joy of solitude and moving into the flow state when painting without interruption,” commented artist Pamela Benham. “And then, what a gift to have people who are interested in art and in my work coming to see it and speak with me.

Other artists value the feeling of validation that comes with sharing their inspirations and processes with the public.

“It allows the local artists the chance to introduce art-lovers to the environment they work in, and I think Rick Garcia’s Winter Light at Shoreline that gives people a much better idea of what it takes to produce a piece of art,” shared artist Rick Garcia. “I just find it to be an

PAPER TRAIL: The Life Story of Great Works of Art

– an exhibition focusing on the significance of how art moves through the world and across time will open August 27th at Sullivan Goss: An American Gallery. From the artist’s studio to the walls of the gallery, a work might pass through a prestigious collection or two. It might have been shown in numerous gallery or museum exhibitions.

It might have been published or promoted.

It might even have been secreted out of a country.

Traditionally, provenance is defined as the record of ownership, and it is often key to establishing the authenticity of historic works of art. To ensure authenticity, it is ideal to be able to trace the complete history of an Overpass Series No. 5, 2001 by Nicole Strasburg artwork from the artist’s studio to the present day. Documentation is crucial. Gallery and auction sales may leave a paper trail. Certainly, institutional exhibitions do.

Of course, publication is critical: art books, newspapers, and magazines leave an actual paper record of the travels and highlights from an art work’s journey. At each step, an implicit endorsement of the work’s value is made. From the documentary record, curators, dealers and collectors glean some part of the unique life story for each piece of art. Reading the paper trail correctly, each player hopes to see how a particular piece stacks up against the artist’s entire body of work.
