Santa Barbara Historical Museum Exhibit is

Tip of theIceberg

of Extensive Old Spanish Days Collection

ROJECT FIESTA! now on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum represents just a fraction of the Museum’s extensive collection of items related to Old Spanish Days. The exhibit spans the first 50 years of Fiesta and features beautifully restored costumes, shawls, posters, artwork, artifacts, historical photos, and some surprises. New this year are handmade masks from the 1950s and 1960s on loan from the Profant Foundation, along with one of 47 scrapbooks recently transferred from Old Spanish Days to the Museum.

Harwood revealed more about the collection, her personal favorites, items still needed for an Old Spanish Days’ 100th anniversary exhibition in 2024, and more when she answered a few questions for VOICE readers.

Harwood: We held the exhibition outside in 2020, including a carriage on loan from the Carriage and Western Art Museum, with enlargements of our Fiesta postcard collection and other items that could be outside. Last year, because the Historical Parade was cancelled, we recreated it in our gallery using life size models of horses dressed in elaborate saddles, with costumed mannequins portraying the Spirits, Saint Barbara, flower girls, and dignitaries riding in authentic carriages.

McHugh: How else does the Museum participate in Fiesta?

Harwood: We have a popup exhibit of Fiesta history in the De la Guerra Plaza Mercado, and we also sell Fiesta related merchandise.

“It’s the tip of the iceberg,” noted Museum Director Dacia Harwood, “and our collection just continues to grow.”

McHugh: What did the Museum do for Project Fiesta! during the pandemic years?

McHugh: What else is special to you?

Harwood: Some of my favorites are among our more than 200 costumes and items of clothing. A couture gown made with Christian Dior lace designed for Fiesta is on permanent display, along with Dwight Murphy’s black and gold velvet Fiesta suit. Some of the clothing came from historic families like the De la Guerras, and actually pre-date the Fiesta celebration. But many costumes were made at home by just doctoring up suits and dresses by hand. I love how heirlooms are passed along the generations and that traditions continue to this day.

McHugh: Are there items that you still want to add to this collection?

Harwood: Our collection is vast, but there are some gaps. We plan to go all-out for a major Fiesta exhibition for the hundredth anniversary. For example, we have Fiesta posters from 55 years, including the very first poster from 1924. Many more are still to be acquired. We’d also like to have more film and home movies from past festivals. People with possible donations should contact the Museum’s library at archivist@sbhistorical.org

Old Spanish Days’ Historical Parade Returns

¡Viva El Desfile Histórico!

PREADING FIESTA JOY with vibrant dancers, historic carriages, and hundreds of skilled equestrians, El Desfile Histórico (the Historical Parade) unites thousands of locals and visitors in celebrating our varied community. Now, after two years without a parade and months of ongoing preparation, Santa Barbara is ready for the return of El Desfile Histórico along its new Cabrillo Boulevard route from 12 to 2pm on Friday, August 5th.

As the new route offers limited parking options, free trolley shuttle service will be available to transport parade attendees from the 900 block of Chapala St. and the 1100 and 600 blocks of Anacapa St. Commuters will be dropped off at State and Yanonali Streets, one block away from the parade route.

“We just want to make sure everybody has the opportunity to come out and celebrate because it is a completely new Fiesta this year and a new parade route,” shared Miller.

Planning for El Desfile Histórico, as well as Fiesta overall, begins shortly after each August’s festivities end. The Santa Barbara Carriage and Western Art Museum also plays the important role of maintaining the historic carriages that star in the parade.

Faced with a shorter route along Cabrillo, organizers knew the 2022 parade would need to be scaled back. Rising fuel prices added to the matrix as many participants who travel from across the nation decided not to attend, naturally cutting down the number of entries.

Groups and organizations interested in participating in the parade fill out entry applications on the OSD website by early summer. Traditionally, the parade includes 75 to 100 groups and approximately 700 horses. On Friday, just over 50 groups, largely from the regional area, will march along Cabrillo.

“We tried to hold down the amount of people that entered, but it seemed like it worked out that most of the people that wanted to be a part of it, were able to be part of it,” explained Miller. “And then we’ve had some people fall out and some people that were

Father Larry Gosselin, OFM, of Old Mission Santa Barbara has participated in Fiesta for the past eleven years.

He shared with VOICE that the Mission’s float “represents the invincibility of a community that’s bound together in a family of love.” He added of the parade, “It gathers people together and we truly celebrate who we are as a community.”

The parade generates a sense of community among its hundreds of volunteers, including OSD team members, announcers, float constructors, Horsemen’s Rendezvous volunteers, and approximately 30 marshals to direct the parade’s traffic. Volunteer sign-ups are ongoing via the OSD website.

“We need as many people from the community as we can get,” said Miller. “It’s an all-volunteer operation.”

El Desfile Histórico will begin at the west end of Cabrillo Boulevard, proceed along the beach to Calle Cesar Chavez, then go back down Cabrillo. www.sbfiesta.org

Free Trolley Shuttle

Services Promote Parade Accessibility Partnering with the City of Santa Barbara and the Downtown Organization, Old Spanish Days will run free trolley shuttle services from 10am to 5pm from the downtown to the parade route area. Pick-up locations include: • 900 block of Chapala Street near Lot 2 • 1100 Block of Anacapa next to the library, across from the Courthouse, and between the Library Garage and the Granada Garage • 600 Block of Anacapa near Ortega and next to Lot 10

NDERSTANDING THE VALUE OF ACTIVE REMEMBRANCE IN PREVENTING FUTURE TRAGEDIES, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation will host its 28th Annual Sadako Peace Day to honor the victims of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and other wars. Free and open to the public, the event invites community members to experience poetry, music, speakers, and moments of reflection at Montecito’s La Casa de Maria from 6 to 7pm on Tuesday, August 9th.

The ceremony is named for twelve-yearold Sadako Sasaki, who folded over a thousand paper cranes while sitting in her hospital bed in accordance with a Japanese legend claiming doing so would grant her a wish. Having developed what ultimately proved fatal radiation-induced leukemia from living in Hiroshima during the 1945 atomic bombing, her powerful act of hope has inspired people worldwide for generations.

Sandy Jones, NAPF Director of Communications, emphasized the value of reflecting on the history of the attacks and our society’s understanding of them so that future nuclear warfare is prevented.

A Time for Remembrance and Reflection This marks the first year since 2018 that Sadako Peace Day will be held in the Sadako Peace Garden at La Casa de Maria.

NAPF’s new President, Dr. Ivana N. Hughes, will serve as the program’s keynote speaker and discuss her work in the Marshall Islands and advocating for nuclear abolition. NAPF Board Chair Frank Bognar will open the program.

The evening will also feature poetry readings by Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Emma Trellis, Poet Laureates emeriti Sojourner Kincaid Rolle and Perie Longo, and Franciscan priest Father Larry Gosselin.

Local singer-songwriter Hal Maynard and Sandy Jones will perform two original songs. Bob Nyosui Sedivy, a komusō monk, will play the shakuhachi, an ancient fiveholed flute.

House Judiciary Committee Approves Rep. Carbajal’s Measure to Prevent Deportation of U.S. Servicemembers’ Parents

N A LANDMARK STEP TOWARD PROTECTING SERVICEMEMBERS’ FAMILIES, the House Judiciary Committee has approved and advanced the Protect Patriot Parents Act. Authored by Representative Salud Carbajal, the measure would let parents of service members apply for a green card.

Estimates indicate that there are as many as 80,000 undocumented parents and spouses of former and active duty U.S. servicemembers living nationwide.

The measure was inspired by the stories of one of these individuals, Juana Flores.

Juana was deported in 2019 even though she had lived in the United States for 30 years and is the mother of Sergeant Cesar Flores, who was actively serving in the U.S. Air Force. Ultimately, Juana was allowed to return home following support from Carbajal, additional community leaders, and members of the public.

“Not too long ago, I got to know a Central Coast mom by the name Juana Flores. Juana was cruelly ripped away from her family despite the fact that her son is active duty in the Air Force,” explained Rep. Carbajal. “As a veteran and immigrant myself, I find it unconscionable that someone could step up to voluntarily serve in the military and be willing to sacrifice their life for our country only to have their family torn apart. The Protect Patriot Parents Act will help shape an immigration system that is fair, keeps families together, and recognizes the positive contributions immigrants and their families make to our communities.”

The measure is now available for consideration by the full U.S. House of Representatives. www.carbajal.house.gov

A dedicated Symphony teammember, Askew has previously helped ensure the success of all of its special events. JUDITH COOK MCCAFFREY has been elected President of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise for the 202223 year. A Rotary Club member since 1995, McCaffrey has held multiple leadership positions over the years, including previously serving as President in 1999-2000. Now retired, she worked for 20 years with the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. McCaffrey’s additional local involvement includes working with the local Girl Scout organization and the Educational Foundation for Foreign Judith Cook McCaffrey Study. Jeremy Bassan Joins SB Botanic Garden

JEREMY BASSAN has joined the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Board of Trustees. A local, Bassan traveled China after high school, where he met a local family making silk bags.

He began selling the bags, launching the Big Buddha brand of handbags, accessories, and shoes. The brand was acquired

by Steve Madden Ltd. in 2010. Bassan has since returned to Santa Barbara, and owns a boutique real estate investment and development company. Ambulance Service Contract Request for Proposals Released

F

OR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS 50 PLUS-YEAR HISTORY, Santa Barbara County’s exclusive ambulance service contract will go to a public procurement. At the direction of the Board of Supervisors, the Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency (SBCEMSA) has announced the release of the first Request for Proposal (RFP) for the contract. The bid process is expected to conclude with an award in November of this year. The new contract will start on March 1st, 2024.

The ambulance contractor will provide emergency medical care and transport to the County’s residents and visitors. This RFP emphasizes clinical care, following a nationwide trend to focus on patient-centered metrics. Since faster response times are not generally associated with better patient care, the RFP focuses on the Triple Aim approach – patient experience, population health, and reducing system cost.

This RFP process incorporated the feedback from over 60 EMS stakeholders and partners, which was collected during a 2018 EMS System Review. In addition to this input, SBCEMSA solicited feedback from the public and local providers in September 2021 and released a draft proposal in November 2021 for potential bidders to provide comment. Based upon the draft’s feedback as well as the Santa Barbara County 2018 EMS System Review, SBCEMSA worked with consultants from Fitch & Associates to develop an RFP designed to allow for both public and private organization bidders, with a focus on clinical performance. www.countyofsb.org/2024/EMS-Agency

Published in 2008 and followed by two sequels, Scumble and Switch, Savvy follows Mibs Beaumont, a girl on the brink of turning 13 years old as she discoveres her “savvy” — the unique power all Beaumont family members develop when they reach teenagedom. A chapter book best suited for the third grade and up, it is currently included on the Santa Barbara County Education Office’s Battle of the Books reading list.

Previously, Paz served with the Santa Barbara Foundation as Director of Policy and External Affairs, as well as with First 5 in Santa Barbara and Merced counties. A Santa Barbara local, Paz grew up attending SB Unified Schools. He has given back by acting as a board member for several nonprofits, including the Santa Barbara City College Foundation. He was also a trustee for the Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education. People’s Self-Help Housing Receives Grant from City of Goleta

HE CENTRAL COAST’S LONGEST-SERVING NONPROFIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING ORGANIZATION, People’s Self-Help Housing, has been awarded a $7,100 grant from the City of Goleta to benefit PSHH’s Supportive Housing Program at properties throughout the local area.

“We are grateful for this funding which will allow us to continue to expand muchneeded resources for our residents,” said Rick Gulino, PSHH Director of Neighborhood Development & Resident Services. “This will provide expanded opportunities and broader support to community members throughout the City of Goleta.”

To meet the needs of residents, many of whom are transitioning from years of housing instability, PSHH combines property management with service-enriched supportive housing. The Supportive Housing Program also partners with over 70 area agencies connecting PSHH residents with area wellness programs such as health screenings, counseling, mental health support, food distribution, rental assistance, wellness seminars, and more.

The concept of fear moves through the book as Mibs begins to understand that everyone, regardless of age, carries their own anxieties with them, from the seemingly self-assured 16 yearsold neighbor to a middle-aged Bible salesman. Readers are ultimately left understanding the importance of extending empathy to all individuals, and utilizing their own “savvy,” whatever that may be, to make a positive impact on those around them.

SB County Board of Education Begins Process to Fill Open Seat

OLLOWING THE MIDTERM RESIGNATION OF DR. PETER MACDOUGALL, the County Board of Education voted at a special meeting last week to begin the appointment process to fill the vacancy.

The application will be posted on the SBCEO website by Monday, August 8th, with applications due on or before Wednesday, August 17th at 5pm.

Dr. MacDougall served for 16 years on the SBCEO board, and previously served as the President of Santa Barbara City College from 1981 to 2002. His community volunteerism has impacted many nonprofits, serving as CEO or Board Chairperson of organizations including Santa Barbara County’s United Way, Santa Barbara Partners in Education, Fighting Back, the Santa Barbara Foundation, and more.

“In my lifetime, I have had the opportunity to lead and volunteer in many capacities in service to students and educators,” said Dr. MacDougall.

“My belief in the power of excellent public education is as strong as it has ever been, but I feel now is the right time to step aside and let others lean into the important work of ensuring that our schools have the support they need to help every student meet their potential as they strive toward college, career, and, a meaningful life ahead. I will miss my friends and colleagues at SBCEO but feel confident that the organization is in excellent hands under the leadership of Dr. Susan Salcido, her team, and my devoted fellow board members.”

Mission Santa Barbara Recognizes JoAnn Cota and Joan Cota For Dedicating Over 60 Years of Service

T

WO EXTRAORDINARY LOCAL WOMEN, JoAnn Cota and Joan Cota, were honored with a celebratory reception hosted by Old Mission Santa Barbara last week for working at the Mission for 65 and 67 years, respectively.

Upon being recognized, both JoAnn and Joan voiced surprise at time passing so quickly. Over the years, their favorite part of working at the Mission was just that: coming to work together every day and getting to meet people from all over the world.

This included the Queen of England, who visited in 1983. JoAnn and Joan watched as the royal entourage brought bloodhounds through the Mission before Queen Elizabeth entered. They also watched as she planted a tree in the Mission cemetery.

The duo has also witnessed many social changes at the Mission. When they started working there in September 1955, women were not allowed to enter the Mission garden, where the Mission’s tour route now starts. As they weren’t permitted in the back, a friar would bring them coffee in the afternoons.

JoAnn and Joan would also climb on their office desk to look through the window to watch the friars walking and praying in the garden. The pair were also not originally allowed to wear pants to work, only skirts or dresses.

hosting the friars in their homes, making them enchiladas and drinks, and letting the friars help with the dishes after dinner. The pair fondly remembers the many friars they have worked alongside, including Father Basil Kelly, Father Virgilio, and Father Virgil Cordano.

JoAnn has lived in Santa Barbara County her entire life, marrying Edwin Cota in 1953 and having two sons and one daughter. She now has seven grandkids and 18 greatgrandkids. Joan moved to Santa Barbara from Evanston, IL in 1945, becoming JoAnn’s sister-in-law after marrying her husband’s brother, James Cota, in 1962. Joan’s daughter, Theresa Cota Pote, also works in the Mission shop, and is celebrating 40 years of service.

She also previously worked as a teacher and Curriculum Coordinator for the Carpinteria Unified School District before becoming principal at Aliso and Summerland Schools, and the Carpinteria Family School.

Tran has worked in both the private and public healthcare sectors, previously serving as the Senior Public Health Nurse Operations Director for the Public Health Company. He has also served as the Assistant Deputy Director for Community Health at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, where he provided leadership and oversight of various health programs such as Maternal Child and Adolescent Health, Women Infant and Children, Epidemiology, Vital Statistics, and more.

Music Academy Festival Orchestra

There’s something about the French!

N FINE MUSICAL FORM ALL SUMMER, the Music Academy Festival Orchestra has come together as an ensemble of superb peers. Under a host of world-famous conductors, the ensemble has quickly acquired a delicately honed and carefully balanced arsenal of orchestral color, imagery, and flat-out thrilling finesse in performance.

dynamic contrasts as they were intended – unexpectedly thrilling. Denève, a large man, was in mesmerizing control of all things, including minutia. The third movement, Allegro – Allegro vivace – Allegro, for example, was extraordinarily re-examined and codified on several levels by the conductor, while the last movement, Allegretto – Allegro vivace, particularly the fugue section, served up a satisfying sonic lush out in his hands, despite not having a single memorable tune.

After demonstrating a flair for Russo-French rapprochement with his Rachmaninoff interpretation, Denève let loose his inner Gaul for a magical performance of Maurice Ravel’s, Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 (1913).

The Second Suite is a pastiche of dance segments - Lever du jour, Pantomime, and Danse generale - from the fulllength ballet composed for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912.

From its mystical opening bars - animist warbling in winds intimating a panhellenic nature idyl - straight through to its triumphant Dionysian finale of shifting rhythms and irregular meters, the Second Suite is an imaginative tour de force for orchestra, with one of music’s most exhilarating endings – a sonic whirling dervish celebrating pagan love. The audience, quiet as church mice throughout the roughly 18-minute musical orgy, erupted in roars and hoots of delight after the last tsunami chord – an apt acknowledgement of an extraordinarily exhilarating performance.

HEERS OF “LIFE IS A CABARET” rang throughout Hahn Hall when the Music Academy presented its Lehrer Vocal Institute Series performance of Hahn Hall: 1922-2022: An Original Cabaret last Thursday night. Featuring dazzling solo and ensemble performances by all of this summer’s talented vocal fellows, the evening transported audiences on a romantic, humorous, and sexy musical journey through time as the Academy showed off Hahn Hall’s new technological abilities.

Directed by James Darrah and music director Craig Terry, Hahn Hall’s stage was transformed into a 1930s nightlife scene, complete with card-playing, a bar, and a rotating cast of piano fellows providing lively music. The

cherry on top of this creative vision was costume designer Molly Irelan’s skill, as she decked each fellow in old-fashioned suits, dresses, or undergarments befitting their character.

Soprano Krista Renée Pape kicked the evening off with a playful, soaring performance of Gershwin’s Boy Wanted. Tenor Maximillian Jansen and mezzo-soprano Tivoli Treloar hopped onstage to welcome the sold-out audience, encouraging everyone to forgo traditional concert decorum by laughing, clapping, or cheering as they wished — after all, cabaret is about doing what makes you happy!

Rather than following a narrative or the musical Cabaret, the concert highlighted the range of emotions explored through cabaret.

poignant Prologue from Seven Deadly Sins and tenor Giorgi Guliashvili’s passionate Das Zauberlied.

Yet the majority of the evening centered on happiness, fun, and romance, with lighthearted numbers including Gershwin’s Just Another Rhumba, resoundingly sung by bass-baritone Yue Wu, tenor Sibo Msibi’s tender bilingual version of Que reste-t-il de nos amours, bass Eric Delagrange’s hilarious rendition of And Her Mother Came Too!, and mezzo-soprano Sarah Margaret Dyer doing the splits while singing Vodka.

All performances were enhanced by Hahn Hall’s new technology, including vibrant lighting and the projection of videos and vintage paintings, such as footage of a piano and flames accompanying mezzo-soprano Quinn Middleman’s romantic rendition of Piel Canela.

When combined with the young singers’ talent, the technology’s presence emphasized the timeless nature of music and cabaret.

Hughes also noted NAPF’s long tradition of inspiring artistic involvement in the movement for peace and organizing important community events, such as Sadako Peace Day, set for this Tuesday, August 9th.

She is also looking forward to the Foundation continuing the Frank E. Kelley Lecture and the Evening for Peace. It also has plans for a new event, the inaugural luncheon Women Waging Peace, which will take place this November.

“I am very excited about these special opportunities to meet many community members and to continue to bring these issues to a broader public. Only through greater engagement can we hope to bring our lofty goals to reality,” she shared.

Dr. Hughes comes to the Foundation from Columbia University, where she is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and served as the Director of the K=1 Project, Center for Nuclear Studies.

looming over the whole of humanity,” Hughes shared. “I couldn’t be more excited to advance the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons; my commitment to this vision is boundless. There is a gravity to the current moment of intertwined global crises that we must turn into an opportunity for creating a better world, one we will be proud to leave to our children and future generations.”

Dr. Hughes sees the work ahead at the Foundation to lie in three main areas. “NAPF has a long and rich history of fighting for a world free of nuclear weapons, so in many ways my vision for the Foundation revolves around strengthening and reviving existing programs and initiatives. There are three areas of our programming that I am passionate about: work on the existing international treaties that focus on nuclear security, in particular the TPNW; outreach and assistance to impacted communities; and youth involvement.”

Turning her focus to victim assistance in impacted communities she noted, “NAPF has a long history of working with Hibakusha, survivors of nuclear attacks on Japan, and Japanese peace and anti-nuclear organizations. NAPF also supported the government of the Marshall Islands (the site of U.S. nuclear testing) in filing Nuclear Zero lawsuits against the U.S. and other nuclear weapons states. These lawsuits were based on the premise that the nuclear weapons states have not been making enough progress on nuclear disarmament, as is their obligation according to Article VI of the NPT [Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons].”

Hughes would also like NAPF to engage in working with communities in the Southwest “that have been devastated by both uranium mining and nuclear testing.”

She continued, “Overall, the efforts to assist affected communities within and outside of the TPNW [Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons] will continue to be a big part of our work.”

Engaging and inspiring younger generations to tackle this thicket of issues and move toward a world free of nuclear weapons will continue to be at the heart of the Foundation’s work. “Prior to joining NAPF I devoted my entire career to teaching and research, including for 14 years at Columbia University, where I have focused my efforts on undergraduate students,” Hughes shared.

“My own experience teaching and discussing nuclear disarmament issues with them is that they simply need to learn about this and when they do, a fire is lit.”

Dr. Hughes graduated with Honors from Caltech in 1999, earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and completing her senior thesis with Frances Arnold, the first American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 2005, she earned her PhD from Stanford University in the laboratory of the National Academy of Sciences member Daniel Herschlag, in the Department of Biochemistry, and was an American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellow.

While at Columbia, Dr. Hughes has been a University Senator and a member of several committees and boards.

She is also the recipient of the Lenfest Distinguished Columbia Faculty Award, Provost Large Scale Teaching Award, Provost MOOC Award (co-recipient with David Helfand), and the Global Scholars Program Award (corecipient with Emlyn Hughes).

“I have been interested in questions surrounding nuclear technologies - both nuclear weapons and nuclear energy - for more than ten years,” she explained. “A particular focus of my work has been the environmental - and therefore the human - impacts of nuclear weapons testing, most notably in the Marshall Islands, as well as a broader interest in nuclear disarmament education. My work in the Marshall Islands was directly inspired by the NAPF initiative on the Nuclear Zero Lawsuits, brought to the International Court of Justice, in 2014. Helping the world to understand the environmental impacts and the human suffering caused by this horrific nuclear legacy has been deeply meaningful to me.”

This recognition of the contributions of those around her may be a long term trait. A colleague at Columbia’s K=1 Project, Pierre Cristofari, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Paris, said of Hughes, “Ivana has a unique ability to eliminate distance: whether talking to a Nobel prize laureate or a first-year undergraduate, she always provides undivided and benevolent attention.

Among her numerous extraordinary capacities, this trait leads her to a very distinctive overview of any organization she has run or has taken part in. It also allows every member of her staff to feel highly supported, encouraged, and cared for.”

With hope for the future, Hughes concluded: “NAPF has always been a non-partisan organization, attracting people from all walks of life to its mission. I look forward to continuing in this tradition. We want to bring people together, not set them apart. And I truly believe that a commitment to peace can do just that.”

Noches de Ronda • Over 200 singers, musicians, and dancers, performing styles from romantic flamenco to Mexican folklórico, will enchant locals and visitors alike when Noches de Ronda returns to the SB Courthouse Sunken Gardens from 8 to 10pm, Thursday through Saturday, August 4th to 6th.

Dressed in traditional Fiesta costumes, the young people of Santa Barbara and their families will get to strut their stuff and celebrate Fiesta in style during the Desfile de los Niños, or Children’s Parade.

The parade begins near the corner of Cabrillo Boulevard & Garden Street, and ends near Cabrillo Blvd & Calle Puerto Vallarta at 10am on Saturday, August 6th.

FIESTA PANCAKES TO SUPPORT VETERANS A Fiesta Feast, with all you can eat pancakes for $10, will be hosted by the American Legion of Santa Barbara at the Veterans Memorial building at the beach, 112 West Cabrillo Blvd, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6th and 7th, from 7:30am to noon. All proceeds will go to support veterans and outreach to them by the American Legion, Santa Barbara.

Retail Sales Keep U.S. Growing

U

.S. RETAIL SALES REBOUNDED STRONGLY in June as Americans spent more on gasoline and other goods amid soaring inflation, which could allay fears of an imminent recession but not change the view that economic growth in the second quarter was tepid, if not slightly negative.

Is it good enough to stave off a recession next year? Consumer spending drives almost two-thirds of economic growth, with retail sales half of spending. The post-pandemic spending spike has slowly subsided from a 100-mph speed aided by government subsidies to its present 60-mph cruising speed, as I said last week, still above average per the FRED graph.

This depends in part on the inflation picture, of course, which will slowly subside as the supply-shocks diminish. Gas prices, for instance, have dropped more than 40 cents over the past month, which is a large part of the recent inflation surge.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Launches “Her Legacy” Campaign and Plan for Outdoor Courtyard

OLLOWING DONATIONS TOTALLING $350,000 FROM TWO DEDICATED COMMUNITY MEMBERS, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has revealed its plans to establish its new Lynda Fairly Courtyard. $150,000 was donated by philanthropist and community leader Lynda Fairly, and $200,000 was contributed by an anonymous donor.

The courtyard will be developed into an intentional mixed-use community space, complete with dedicated outdoor classroom areas and an interactive natural playground, in an environmentally conscious and meditative landscape.

Fairly has also challenged Girls Inc. of Carpinteria to raise another $250,000 from other women philanthropists to expand and further compensate Girls Inc. staff. When this is achieved, Fairly will contribute an additional $100,000 to fund the “Her Legacy” investment opportunity, ensuring the organization’s programs will continue to grow and inspire generations of young women and girls.

“I was raised by a single mom, and I know the need to help young women to become healthy, educated, and independent,” said Fairly. “Girls Inc. starts this process at a young age and encourages girls to believe in their futures.”

All contributions will support Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s efforts to attract and retain a qualified, caring and stable workforce by offering competitive wages and benefits. This will offer local girls the opportunity to build relationships with trusted, caring adult mentors.

“The Lynda Fairly Courtyard will serve as an intentional, beautiful outdoor space where we will continue to cultivate our future female changemakers,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria. “We are so grateful to Lynda for investing in our mission and inspiring other female leaders to be a part of this legacy – rightfully named Her Legacy. The funding will support our talented and dedicated staff and ensure

FRIDAY, JULY 29TH - You don’t see this often. The ever-popular Joe’s Cafe was dark at 10pm in Santa Barbara on Thursday. Edison had a work project and power was out for several addresses. Old King’s Road pulled out lanterns! At least this wasn’t during Fiesta!

MONDAY, AUGUST 1ST - No left turn for Old Spanish Days with updated parade route on the waterfront for 2022. Traditionally, the parade turns onto State Street from Cabrillo Boulevard. This year, Friday’s parade will follow Cabrillo to Calle Cesar Chavez and back. Free shuttle services will run from the downtown to the waterfront area to transport people to the parade. The 49th Annual

King Harbor Race a Success!

You might think that things down at the Santa Barbara Harbor might have taken a little breather after the annual (majorly successful!) Fiesta Cup Regatta, chaired by Santa Barbara Yacht Club member Jane Watkins, entered the history The King Harbor Welcoming Committee books a short couple of weeks ago. But Bottom row: Beverly Toole, Suesan Pawlitski, oh no! Completely undaunted, the Yacht Julie Hinkle, and Jo Sadecki Bridge: Gary Pawlitski and Dan Durbeck Club, along with the King Harbor Yacht Club, co-hosted the 49th annual King Harbor Race from Santa Barbara to King Harbor. One of the premier distance races, part of the SBYC Wilson series, 75 yachts from up and down the coast of California and neighboring states have reveled in the hospitality of the Santa Barbara and King Harbor Yacht Clubs. The off-shore race spans a distance of 81 nautical miles and, depending on wind and weather, the sailors normally reach their destination at the King Harbor Yacht Club in the LA area in several hours or, considering the distance and weather conditions, as long as an entire day.

HIS IS ONE OF THE COLUMNS THAT HAS MY HEAD SPINNING! There’s so much going on in Our Town that it’s hard to even stay afloat. Old Spanish Days is now well underway and the rerouted Fiesta Parade – the first after a couple of coronavirus restricted years - is to take place on Friday, August 5th followed by the Los Niños Children’s Fiesta Parade the next day. Judging from the crowds, the explosion of enthusiasm that can be seen on every street corner, restaurant, and venue is certainly a testament that partygoers near and far are anxious to join in Santa Barbara’s traditional Fiesta celebration. “Viva La Fiesta” can be heard throughout the city as the rich cultural heritage of Santa Barbara is being celebrated with music, dance, and traditional activities. But that’s not all, folks…

of the Yacht Club at the Palapa Bar. Local and King Harbor skippers and their crews socialized in the sand, after which they were invited to dine inside the clubhouse. On Friday, July 29th the race was on! This year, I understand, the winds took a portion of the weekend off, so the race was somewhat longer than anticipated. The return of the winds mid-race helped make the almost 100 nautical mile sail seem a bit less like a trans-Atlantic voyage! I don’t know about you, but to me that would take one hardy gang of motivated sailors and a lotta Red Bull!

At the conclusion of the race, the King Harbor Yacht Club hosted the competitors with their traditional welcoming party, followed by the awards ceremony and the presentation of the trophies. The 2022 overall winner was BOLT, a 68-foot Nelson Marck, a competitor from the Balboa Yacht Club. The page has turned on another successful King Harbor Race (and celebration)... but not one to miss a beat, the Yacht Club motors on with its yearly Catalina Cruise. Is this an action packed time of year in Santa Barbara, or what! Viva La Fiesta!

In planning for the regatta much preparation and coordination is needed, especially due to the uncertainties created by the on and off again environment of the pandemic.

This year’s race chairs Rob Miller from the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and Dorian Harris from the King Harbor Yacht Club - with the assistance of Race Director Brad Schaupeter worked hard over a longer period of time preparing for the live 2022 race with volunteers at their side. The Santa Barbara Waterfront Department planned dock assignments for the sailboats that needed mooring – not an easy job for a harbor as snug as our own. For the start of the race, a long-standing (at least a decade) Registration Committee staffed by Santa Barbara Yacht Club volunteers prepared the necessary instructions and information for the competitors, registered the participating boats, and ensured that the regatta, and the day, had a smooth start.

ST THURSDAY is an evening of art and culture in downtown Santa Barbara that takes place on the first Thursday of each month. Participating art venues offer free access to art in a fun and social environment from 5-8pm. 1st Thursday venues also provide additional attractions, such as live music, artist receptions, lectures, wine tastings, and hands-on activities. State Street also comes alive on 1st Thursday with performances and interactive activities.

Restoring the Great Arch

Santa Barbara Courthouse Legacy Foundation The Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the most distinctive courthouses in America and its Great Arch is in need of restoration. Completed in 1929, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, the building is a functioning courthouse, an iconic symbol of the Spanish heritage of Santa Barbara, a focal point for community festivals, concerts, weddings, and public events, and a landmark attraction for nationwide and international tourism.

Because of this need, the Courthouse Legacy Foundation is now seeking financial support for an ongoing project to restore the Great Arch entrance into the Courthouse and its Sunken Gardens. Doorways under the Arch lead to the Courthouse lobby, active courtrooms, County offices, the famed Mural Room, and the Clock Tower.

The Great Arch and Clock Tower are the most photographed features of the building.

Over the years, the Great Arch has suffered weathering and

deterioration. A Comprehensive Conditions assessment of the Courthouse identified a number of restoration requirements for the Arch. Cracks and erosion in the sandstone masonry and cast-stone carvings and sculptures, have led to water infiltration and damage to stone and cast-stone features on the Arch. A previous attempt, at an unknown time in the past, to protect the stone and castings with a clear coating, has actually resulted in discoloration and further erosion of these features.

There is also a potential danger that some pieces may fall onto public spaces.

The ultimate goal of this project is to completely restore the Arch to its distinctive appearance as the signature entrance to a designated National Historic Landmark building and an iconic symbol of the Spanish heritage and identity of the city of Santa Barbara.

In 2020 EverGreene Architectural Arts, Inc. performed the

sophisticated work of removing the degraded stone coating that was causing deterioration of the Great Arch. They conducted a multi-step analysis for best methods of treatment and followed Federal standards for preserving a National Historic Landmark. Their Phase I cleaning activity was completed on time and on budget for $175,000.

The CLF is now focused on raising funds to begin Phase II of the conservation effort, which will address damage to the sandstone blocks, failed mortar joints, and loss of ornamental stone features on the Great Arch.

Legacy Foundation In 2004, a small group of committed citizens came together and formed the Santa Barbara Courthouse Legacy Foundation (CLF), dedicated to the conservation and restoration of this magnificent building for generations to come. The CLF ensures all conservation, restoration, and restoration projects meet federally mandated standards for a National Historic Landmark.

A Stage For The Whole Community

Renovation of the Band Shell will revitalize Plaza del Mar for music, drama, dance, and celebratory events. As a public park, the City provides low-cost access for non-profit organizations that serve a broad cross-section of the community.

The PARC Foundation The Parks and Recreation Community (PARC) Foundation is partnered with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to achieve Band Shell renovation.

All the funding needed to complete the project is $45,000.

A Parks and Recreation Department and Parc Foundation Project Established as a City park in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and outdoor gatherings. The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band.
