N AN ACT OF HOPE, UCSB Arts & Lectures invited donors, friends, and press to their first in-person event in over a year and a half – their 2021-2022 season reveal party on Tuesday, August 31st. Situated in what is one of the most beautiful and (importantly outside and safe) locations in town, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum opened its large outside courtyard for the occasion.

Many familiar faces looked out from behind custom Arts & Lectures face masks that were proffered upon entry as participants enjoyed wines and tasty bites, each waiting to hear what they could look forward to in this upcoming year of uncertainty.

It wasn’t long before the gracious A&L Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. Billeci picked up the microphone with a welcome for everyone, noting it had been 20 months since the last in-person event and that the next day would be the first day in the office for the Arts & Lectures team since the pandemic closures.

“The wait is over,” Billeci declared. “We’re thrilled to be back with all of you. It’s been more than two years...It does feel like it’s been a million years... We’re here doing what we’ve always done, which is to educate, entertain, and inspire.”

Later, she continued, “This is a time that calls for optimism,

resilience, courage, and vision. Santa Barbara needs Hope, and Arts & Lectures is uniquely positioned to respond. A&L’s 2021-2022 CREATING HOPE programming initiative has already inspired our community with presentations

by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, chef José Andrés, and author Anne Lamott. We will continue to inspire, through shared experiences with thought leaders, creative problem solvers and arts visionaries who will guide us forward.

A&L Council Member Dorothy Largay took a turn, as well as Sandy Robertson, who returned from retirement to assist with programming the season. She and Billeci took turns sharing highlights including details on two new series, Soul of America and Justice for All.

The Soul of America series will showcase Arturo O’Farrill’s Fandango at the Wall with the Villalobos Brothers, and Béla Fleck with Americana supergroup My Bluegrass Heart; the new Justice for All series will headline former presidential candidate Julián Castro and social commentator Roxane Gay. Community News Joe Weiland Named Land Trust Board President

Robert Gonzales to Serve as SB County Sheriff ’s Office CAO ROBERT “BOB” GONZALES will serve as the new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office, making this the first time a Chief ’s position will be held by a civilian. As CAO, Gonzales will hold the executive leadership position that oversees the Support Services Branch, including the Financial Service and Operations Support Divisions.

Previously, he has worked as the Sheriff ’s Office Human Resources Manager, Interim Director of Robert Gonzales Public Safety at Mt. San Antonio Community College, and the Chief of Police for the City of Santa Paula Police www.sbsheriff.org Department.

Jordan Elf Project Collects Over 500 Pillows and Blankets for PATH

N A HEARTWARMING DISPLAY OF COMMUNITY ACTION, the Jordan Elf Project has collected over 500 pillows and blankets for People Assisting the Homeless Santa Barbara.

Co-founded by brothers and San Marcos High School students Jaden and Jordan Lind, this local community charity organization holds the goal of helping individuals experiencing homelessness in our county. Now, each of the collected blankets will directly help PATH and its 100 residents.

“The generosity of our neighbors was really exciting to see,” said Jaden. “At one point our driveway was completely filled with donations. PATH is such a great organization and it’s been a total privilege for us to be able to help there and get to know the staff and residents.”

A vital community resource, PATH operates the former Casa Esperanza interim housing site.

There, the organization offers a range of services for people experiencing homelessness, such as outreach, rapid rehousing, employment assistance, and more.

Recently, PATH observed there was a great need for additional blankets and pillows for their residents. Immediately, John “JB” Bowlin, Associate Director of Development & Volunteers, knew that he could count on the Jordan Elf Project to help.

Through asking neighbors, friends, and community members, the Lind brothers’ garage and driveway were covered in large piles of donations within only ten days. While more than 500 pillows and blankets have already been donated, more are expected.

“The energy these young men have shown to answer every call we make has been inspiring to watch,” said Bowlin. “I know we can count on Jaden and Jordan to rally the community to help us meet our specific needs.”

UCSB’s Twelfth Night Reimagines and Celebrates Shakespeare F MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON! In a stunning series of performances filled with wit and sincerity, the students of UC Santa Barbara’s NAKED SHAKES class breathed new life into Shakespere’s iconic Twelfth Night this past weekend.

Directed by Irwin Appel, UCSB Professor of Theater and Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance, the production welcomed community members on the UCSB Commencement Green. There, its actors fully utilized their surroundings, talents, and the Bard’s language to transport the audience into Illyria’s realm.

A beloved comedy, Twelfth Night follows Viola (Lana Spring and Taylor Kirk) after a shipwreck separates her from her twin, Sebastian (Milo Marsden). Assuming Sebastian is dead, Viola disguises herself as a man, and begins working for Duke Orsino (Angel Villalobos).

However, once Viola begins wooing Olivia (Kirsten Høj and Hailey Turner) on Orsino’s behalf, her disguise proves problematic. Meanwhile, pranks abound as Olivia’s gentlewoman Maria (Megan Brown) raises mischief with Sir Toby Belch (Cyrus Roberts), Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Harut Simonian), and a host of fools.

Due to the stage’s proximity to the UCSB lagoon, the production opened with Viola actually paddling to shore on a small raft. Throughout the performance, the actors continued using the Commencement Green as an extension of the stage, hiding behind trees and rushing among the audience. Immediately, viewers were engaged, experiencing first-hand the Shakespearan idea that “all the world’s a stage.”

Further contributing to this immersive approach was the lack of special costumes. Instead, actors wore clothes they might wear on an average school day, cleverly blending the lines between our society and Shakespeare’s. Additionally, the production’s music

(performed by musicians Brandon Statner, Olivia Mendoza, and Rae Farnum) playfully alternated between renditions of Shakespeare-authored songs and acoustic versions of In the Summertime, Stayin’ Alive, and Can’t Help Falling in Love.

These moves, along with the outdoor setting, were in spirit with NAKED SHAKES’ belief in prioritizing Shakespeare’s language over special sets. Accordingly, it was the actors’ responsibility to transport audiences solely through their delivery of the original script — save for some humorous references to Freebirds and UCSB. Each actor exceeded this responsibility, expressing pure passion as they embodied their characters. To include all class members, the roles of Viola and Olivia were played by different actors in each half, with more side characters also added. Both Spring and Kirk excelled as Viola, aptly portraying her confusion and determination. Meanwhile, Høj and Turner acted as two sides of the same coin as Olivia purposefully pursued her goals.

OLLOWING WEEKS OF HARD WORK AND A DEDICATED JOINT EFFORT, the Santa Barbara County and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response have completed their oil cleanup at Toro Canyon Creek.

Located northeast of Summerland, the oil came from natural seepage from a well three miles north of Highway 101 that the Occidental Mining and Petroleum Company built in 1882.

“An estimated 420 to 630 gallons of oil that traveled approximately 300 yards was removed from the channel with absorbents, pressure washing, vacuuming, and disposal of oiled vegetation,” announced the County’s statement. “The next phase will extend for three additional months for occasional monitoring and maintenance of protective measures in place.”

The State and County’s work began in early July, as they addressed a leak in a pipe connected to an oil and water separator at the site. The leak was contained by midJuly. Then, cleanup efforts began, with the CDFW Oiled Wildlife Care Network team discovering 92 oiled frogs in the region. The frogs were cleaned and looked after by the SB Wildlife Care Network, and were returned to their natural habitats on August 27th. Unfortunately, 13 bats, 17 small birds, and a squirrel were found deceased in the affected area.

In the 1990s, the Environmental Protection Agency retrofitted the well’s site to prevent seepage by building the oil and water separator facility at the well. Since 2009, the County has maintained and monitored the facility, and is currently working with state and federal officials on longterm improvements. The County will also be working with the CDFW Lake and Streambed Alteration Program, along with other state agencies, to care for and restore sections of www.countyofsb.org/pwd the creek bed and bank.

Carbajal Secures $11.9 Million for Central Coast Community Projects

I

N A HAPPY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY, Representative Salud Carbajal has secured $11.9 million in funding for eight projects in the 24th Congressional District. This funding was secured in the fiscal year 2022 House-passed appropriations bills, with the supported projects going toward making housing more affordable, protecting water supplies, and more.

“I have, and always will, use my seat in Congress to work to deliver real results for Central Coast residents. I am proud to have secured over $11 million for local projects that will make our community safer and stronger,” said Representative Carbajal. “With these funds, we will be able to make long overdue improvements to community centers, create more affordable housing units for families, and protect our water supply. These projects will go a long way toward improving quality of life on the Central Coast and I will continue fighting for our district as the spending bill progresses through the Senate.” $900,000 of this funding will go toward the County of Santa Barbara Lompoc Health Clinic, and will be used for creating additional capacity, purchasing a generator for its primary care facility, and bettering patient flow and experience. The Goleta Valley Community Center will receive $3 million to reopen with improvements, including ensuring that all areas of the building are ADA compliant. The County of Santa Barbara Veterans Building will also be receiving $1.3 million to improve seismic safety, electrical systems, and its energy systems. $375,000 has been requested for the refurbishment of the Cambria Community Services District Water Tanks, while the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Wastewater Treatment Plant project will receive $112,340 for supporting engineering analysis to expand the treatment plant’s services. Meanwhile, the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo’s Anderson Hotel project will gain $2 million to continue offering affordable housing to low income, vulnerable individuals.

A requested $2.5 million will be spent on the construction of the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara’s Escalante Meadows Community Center in Guadalupe, and $1.7 million will go toward enhancing the City of Guadalupe’s LeRoy Park.

Bidding on a Better Future

I

Archaic laws prevent conservationists from bidding on public resources; experts think this should change.

for sale, they argue that everyone should be allowed to bid on the rights.

Opening up public lands to non-use also empowers smaller groups. Consider a community concerned about the Gunnison sage-grouse, critically endangered by habitat loss from oil and gas development. The options available right now mostly involve petitioning state and federal agencies to make sweeping changes, a task far beyond the resources of most individuals and local organizations.

“Imagine that instead of fighting endless, costly, and often fruitless court battles, the same community could buy up a bunch of mineral rights, and choose not to extract the oil,” Costello said.

“That would be an asset that they now own.”

Updating the laws, the researchers say, will allow the true value of public resources to be revealed in an environmental market. It will give different groups equal footing in auctions, and create a more stable, actionable path toward conservation, to the benefit of both industry and the environment.

N 2016, ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST TERRY TEMPEST WILLIAMS purchased drilling rights to 450 hectares of federal land in Utah. She created a company and began paying rental fees on the lease. But when Tempest Williams revealed that she intended to keep the oil in the ground, the Bureau of Land Management canceled the leases.

They argued that she violated the “diligent development requirement” of the 1920 Mineral Leasing Act, which requires lessees to “exercise reasonable diligence in developing and producing” their leases.

Tempest Williams’ experience highlights the “use it or lose it” stipulation common to many of the laws governing public resources in the U.S. and around the world: You can’t lease public resources with the intent to leave them be. A group of scientists, economists, and lawyers at several universities, including UC Santa Barbara, say it’s time for this requirement to go. The authors argue their case for creating a free market in an article featured in the prestigious journal Science.

“We have 19th century laws in conflict with 21st century values,” said co-author James Salzman, Bren distinguished professor of environmental law at UC Santa Barbara.

“When our public lands laws were written in the 1800s and early 1900s, the goal was to make as much productive use of the lands as quickly as possible,” he continued. “The idea of just leaving the lands as they are was not possible. The only valid uses were extraction – logging, mining, grazing – you name it.”

Many professionals in resource management are aware of this issue, but it hasn’t reached the public ear, the authors explained. And the first step in changing the laws is for people to realize what the problem is. “The goal of this project is to say to the public, ‘Hey. This is crazy. And you should know about it,’ ” Salzman said.

An appreciation of public lands for more than their extractive value is a relatively recent phenomenon, added co-author Andrew Plantinga, an environmental economist at UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science James Salzman & Management. The environmental movement in the 1970s saw a huge shift in public appreciation for nature.

At the same time, economists, ecologists, and Earth scientists began to recognize the importance of natural benefits like biodiversity and ecosystem services. Not only are intact ecosystems important for wildlife, they discovered; these systems also provide palpable benefits to society such as clean drinking water, pest control, and fish stocks, among many other things.

These are all services that cost time and money to replace in the form of filtration plants, pesticides, and fish hatcheries, to name a few.

There’s also been a growing interest from communities in the health of Andrew Plantinga their local environment.

“Under current rules, I think many people feel powerless to make any substantive impact on those ecosystem services,” said co-author Christopher Costello, director of UCSB’s Environmental Markets Lab and Bren School professor. “The problem is, if you’re worried about wildlife conservation, oppose gas fracking in your backyard, or want to keep water in the stream for fish, what do you do? There’s no way to ‘buy’ those goods like you would buy a loaf of bread or running shoes.”

There’s now a great demand for conservation, so why haven’t the rules changed with the times?

Christopher Costello “Laws are sticky,” Salzman remarked. “Once you’ve got a law in place, you get vested interests who don’t want things to change.”

And since extraction is a prerequisite for bidding on public resources, conservationists cannot join and bid on public lands to achieve their goals. Instead, a huge component of environmental action and philanthropy in the U.S. is directed toward lobbying in the interest of changing policies and regulations.

Unfortunately, policy changes are often fickle. There’s growing exasperation over the flip-flop of environmental regulations across administrations and a desire for more durable interventions.

Everyone is frustrated by the mercurial rules, regardless of whether they favor more or less extraction. “Uncertainty is never good for the economy,” Costello said. “And it can be even worse for the environment.”

The authors maintain that the laws need to be changed so that people who don’t want to extract resources can bid for the same licenses and permits as those who do. Essentially, if bidding is allowed for use of public lands, those who favor non-use should be able to compete against traditional extractive interests. This would completely change the sector. “Rather than focusing on legislation that determines how resources get used, we can think about this as a market and let the highest values be expressed,’” Plantinga explained.

Granted, there is the possibility that people interested in extraction will have more purchase power and buy all the rights, but that’s the way the market works right now, Salzman pointed out. It may sound odd, he noted, but we need more bidders, not fewer.

The authors aren’t proposing that all public resources be opened up to bidding. They firmly believe that current protections should be kept in place. However, when public resources are offered

T SEEMS THAT LABOR DAY, NORMALLY MARKED AS THE END OF SUMMER, HAS COME AND GONE! How is that possible? We were just getting our beach towels and umbrellas out of dry dock for July Fourth’s awesome fireworks display and a season of water-related activities. As of this writing, it looks like that boat has left the dock... but not without a great deal of activity and fanfare. So much so that the entire City of Santa Barbara was jumping for the Labor Day weekend enjoying restaurants, beaches, museums, Stearns Wharf, and our beautiful Santa Barbara harbor. I didn’t know where to start. And to be perfectly honest I didn’t get all that far!

Screeching to a grinding halt at the parking lot next to the newly renovated, recently opened Cabrillo Pavilion (well... sort of opened Pavilion) my curiosity got the best of me.

The East Beach Bathhouse building underwent an extensive $20 million renovation that included a new beach boardwalk, storm water improvements, restoration of the lobby, and renovation of the men’s and women’s shower and locker facilities, along with adding multipurpose rooms for gym/fitness, recreation programs, meetings and special events.

This renovation project wrapped up in April of 2020, but because of the pandemic, the City’s Parks & Recreation Department was unable to open the facility for public use until the end of this last month.

Built just one year after the 1925 earthquake that transformed our city’s look, the Cabrillo Pavilion was designed by Roland F. Sauter and E. Keith Lockard and funded by local philanthropist David Gray. In 1927, Gray donated the Pavilion to the city with the stipulations that the building be self-sustaining and that it should be used for park and recreation purposes as a community service to all of Santa Barbara’s citizens and visitors.

The Pavilion was Gray’s legacy gift to the people of our community. Needless to say, after almost 100 years, the Pavilion was ready for its newly renovated close-up!

With camera in hand, I was there for that closeup! The building looked magnificent, complete with two grand entrances (an east side colonnade and an expansive entry from the beach), and newly renovated restrooms on either side of the building. At the front of the complex was a generous play area for the little ones with a shower nearby. The beaches were crowded in both directions and the sky was a brilliant blue... a perfect beach day.

What puzzled me, however, was although the Pavilion was officially open, the blue barriers that had surrounded it during the end of construction were still there. Why was that, I wondered?

Approaching the entrance of the building I found the main doors locked. Pressing my phone to the glass, I took a picture of a furnished interior conceivably for the proposed ground floor restaurant... But where was the restaurant? After consulting Professor Google, I learned the La Sirena restaurant, once set to open in the space formerly occupied by the East Beach Grill, was scrapped due to multiple factors and the coronavirus lock down. Scott McIntosh, a restaurateur from Orange County with 45 years of experience, was asked by investors to take over the space as Reunion Kitchen + Drink along with his other locations in Anaheim Hills and Laguna Beach. Although the opening of the much anticipated restaurant is still some time away, as soon as it opens its doors I’ll let you know. Can’t wait to dine by the strand on East Beach! So stay tuned...

Farinpour earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology and master’s degree in bio-social anthropology from Antioch University and University of California.

Meagan Harmon

JESSICA TADE, PHD acts as the executive director of Casa del Herrero, a historic house museum and gardens in Montecito.

Prior to this role, she acted as the director of marketing and communications for the Santa Barbara City College Foundation, the director of communications and marketing for the Santa Barbara Foundation, and an associate editor for the McGraw-Hill Companies. A committed community member, she has served on the Board of Directors for the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation and Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People, and is currently a commissioner for the Historic Landmarks Advisory Commission of Santa Barbara County. Tade earned her doctorate in art history from UCSB.

Layla Farinpour

MEAGAN HARMON has acted as a Santa Barbara City Council member since 2019, and is also a practicing real estate finance lawyer. Prior to beginning her real estate finance practice, she also acted as an aid worker across the Middle East and North Africa.

This included a year in Afghanistan, where she helped implement a large-scale infrastructure development and humanitarian services project across rural Afghan villages. Harmon earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Wellesley College, her master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard, and her law degree from New York University.

PATRICIA RITCHIE joins DVS after moving to Southern California last year. Originally from Canada, she moved to the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area in 2000, where she worked as a conflict resolution specialist in private mediation practice.

She also served with the Howard Community College Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as district courts and law enforcement agencies. Later, she moved to the Pacific Northwest and served on the local YWCA Board. Ritchie earned her degree in business from Western Governors University.

MORGAN STEFFEN is the Major Accounts Manager at Impulse Advanced Communication. Originally from Minnesota, Steffen moved to Santa Barbara eight years ago. She has been a firm believer in volunteer work since she was 12 years old, when she co-founded a figure skating club that is still operating today.

Steffen also holds great passion for domestic violence prevention and education, which comes from her experience as a survivor and managing the aftermath of abuse, and she credits DVS with playing a key role in her survival. She has volunteered with the organization for the past four years.

Foodbank Invites Community to Participate in Hunger Action Month

EPTEMBER IS HUNGER ACTION MONTH, and Santa Barbara community members are encouraged to donate, volunteer, and spread awareness about food insecurity in our area. Led by the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, the campaign currently holds the goal of raising $50,000 to combat food insecurity.

As a part of Hunger Action Month, participants can follow a calendar of actions that support the Foodbank’s goals and mission. There is also an ongoing “Dine Out for Hunger” program among some participating local restaurants, where $1 of each purchase of a certain food item will be donated to end hunger.

Beyond these steps, people wishing to support the Foodbank’s campain or observe Hunger Action Day on September 17th can sign up to volunteer with the Foodbank’s efforts or donate to the organization directly.

EconomicVOICE A Disappointing Jobs Report

HEN WILL THEY COME BACK TO WORK? That is the question economists are asking with the August unemployment report out today (Sept. 3rd). Although the Calculated Risk graph shows how quickly job creation has recovered in comparison with past recessions (red line) there are still some 5.3 million fewer jobs since February 2020.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 235,000 in August, and the unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percentage point to 5.2 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. So far this year, monthly job growth has averaged 586,000. In August, notable job gains occurred in professional and business services, transportation and warehousing, private education, manufacturing, and other services. Employment in retail trade declined over the month.

“There was some good news - the decline in the unemployment rate, the decline in permanent job loses, and the decline in long term unemployed - however, there are still 5.3 million fewer jobs than prior to the recession,” said Calculated Risk’s Bill McBride, “and overall this was a disappointing report, probably due to the sharp increase in COVID cases.”

A major reason for the lackluster jobs report is the seasonal adjustment that BLS makes, which means there were just 235,000 more jobs created this time of year than is ‘normal’. In ‘normal’ years there is usually a hiring surge for schools in the fall, but many schools aren’t opening or are slow to open because of the tiff over mask mandates, particularly in the red states.

And the Delta variant of SARS-CoV2 is surging. Mask mandates are a crucial question, because students wearing masks are less likely to have to quarantine under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols.

“If a classroom of 25 students is masked and one of them comes down with COVID-19, no one but the sick student has to stay home. If children in the classroom are not masked, anyone in close contact with someone who tests positive must stay home for at least seven days,” said the Baltimore Sun recently.

It cites several examples: Mississippi has 20,000 students quarantined and South Carolina and Arkansas also had hundreds out of school. Several districts have shut schools down as cases of the virus surged. And by Thursday, five Florida school districts were defying their governor’s order and instituting mask mandates after thousands of their students were quarantined. Hillsborough County alone had sent home about 10,000 students in the first week of school, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

In other words, the unemployment picture is chaotic because red states have chosen to make mask mandates a political issue that will hamper school openings perhaps for months, harming the Computer Oriented RE Technology

health of K-12 students unnecessarily. Red-leaning states are doing this really for one reason only— they believe it will rally their troops for the 2022 election.

“The good news is that the change in total nonfarm payroll employment for June was revised up by 24,000, from +938,000 to +962,000, and the change for July was revised up by 110,000, from +943,000 to +1,053,000. With these revisions, employment in June and July combined is 134,000 higher than previously reported,” said McBride.

The BLS reported that in May 2017, 5.5 million teachers and instructors make up 65 percent of employment in elementary, middle, and secondary schools nationwide. There are over two million elementary and middle school teachers, representing 24 percent of total school employment. There are nearly 1.1 million secondary school teachers. And add to that 550,000 janitors and school administrators employed.

So it is not good news that the red states are having so much trouble with mask mandates. Do they really believe endangering the health of children is a winning political issue?

An Invitation and Opportunity for Artistic Reflection

OLDLY QUESTIONING AND EXAMINING A PLETHORA OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ISSUES, Unending is an exhibition to be reckoned with. From intimate reflections on beauty expectations to intensely political works, the exhibition, which fills the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara with the talent of UCSB’s 2020 Master of Fine Arts students, will be on display through September 12th. That’s one last weekend to take in the unique insights of our society’s rising generation of artists.

“I think what will be interesting to the Santa Barbara community is [not only] to have a glimpse at what the Master’s art students are undertaking within our community and at UCSB, but also to see a kind of evolution of work and thought throughout this bizarre and devastating time,” shared Alexandra Terry, MCASB Chief Curator.

Rather than combine the six featured artists’ works in one display, the MCASB gallery showcases each artist’s work through distinctive, individual vignettes throughout the room.

However, all of the artists’ pieces clearly contribute to each other, as they are ever within viewers’ peripheral vision.

Simultaneously unsettling and compelling, they draw attention to a key point of our society’s beauty expectations.

“To enact a ritual that makes one feel ‘in control’ over an ultimately fallible, imperfect body carries a certain catharsis that can be addictive,” said Koth in her artist statement.

“But the oppressive historical (and ever-present) cruelty of beauty standards and the struggle of women to approximate them can often turn these moments of adornment into self-defeating experiences of ritualized alienation.”

“It is a survey into the acoustics and the distance between the object and the visitor,” said Griffith. “That idea re-contextualized in the COVID time-space distortion, made me think of how matters are taken for granted in an expected push, click, switch, process, resolve arrangement.”

Next, Marshall Sharpe’s paintings offer glimpses into compelling scenes of vulnerability. From images of a naked man curled up on a forest floor to an overheard conversation, viewers feel almost as if they have intruded upon something, questioning the nature of viewing personal scenes in a formal setting.

David Wesley White’s section is deeply political, utilizing video, paintings, and three-dimensional art to convey frustrations and concerns. Works include a jester hat made of a White House souvenir cap, a burned

house titled White Inferno, The Burning of Washington (1814), and a short film blending contemporary and medieval imagery.

“I use a researchbased practice to examine personal and American history through a queer lens,” said White in his artist statement. “I often fixate on forgotten or devastating events until I find visual clues hidden deep within them that feel particularly surreal or prophetic.”

Local artists working in all styles and media are invited to submit work to the annual community-wide Ready to Hang art show at the Community Arts Workshop this fall! Featuring an Artist’s Party from 6-9pm Friday, November 19th and a Public Sale from 4-7pm Saturday, November 20th, this is a wonderful opportunity to support and meet local artists. 70 percent of sales will go to the artists, with 30 percent benefitting the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative. There will also be prizes awarded by artist John Hood. All pieces must be 12”x12” inches in size, and as the show’s name suggests, be ready to hang.
