Mariachi Opera to open Opera SB Season Foglia, the 75-minute operetta tells the multi-generational story of one family’s journey across decades and borders to find one another and to make a home together.

Echoing that effect, the Opera SB has announced that a limited number of tickets for this season’s productions will be available to all patrons on a name-your-ownprice basis. The name of this new initiative, made possible by a grant by the Walter and Holly Thomson Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Co-Trustee, is You Decide! “This means that any patron who finds our published prices too high is invited to make their own decision on how much to pay,” Protopapas added. “Producing opera with professional singers, orchestra, and stagehands is very expensive, and tickets typically cover less than 50 percent of the cost. Still, we want our performances to be accessible to everyone, and trust patrons to choose their own price knowing that every dollar goes towards supporting vibrant, live, Santa Barbara-made music theater.”

ITH A LATIN TEMPO TO LIFT YOUR SPIRIT AND A HEARTWARMING FAMILY STORY, Opera Santa Barbara will open their 2021-2022 season with a company premiere of the Mariachi Opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon), on Friday, October 1st, at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 3rd, at 2:30pm at the Granada Theatre.

“We are thrilled to be returning to the Granada with a work that is approachable in so many ways”, said Opera Santa Barbara Artistic and General Director Kostis Protopapas.

“For us this is the time to open up our doors wide and make theater a place of healing for everyone in our community. We are all thirsty for live music and a sense of community right now, and Cruzar is the ideal vehicle for this emotional reopening, with its signable tunes, moving story, and message of resilience and regeneration.”

This production marks the company’s first production at the Granada Theater since November 2019, and the first performance of the theater’s fall season. With music

Award winning, Los Angelesbased Mariachi Los Camperos, who performed the opera at its New York City premiere in 2017 and the Houston revival in 2018.

Some of Opera Santa Barbara’s favorite artists will perform the principal roles. Tenor Daniel Montenegro, Mario in Opera SB’s 2020 Il Postino, and baritone Efraín Solís, Malatesta in last April’s Don Pasquale, take up the roles of the half-brothers Rafael and Mark; former Opera SB Chrisman Studio Artists Kelly Guerra and Sergio Gonzalez, play the young couple of Chucho and Lupita. Bernardo Bermudez takes on the central role of the immigrant pater familias Laurentino, alternating between ages 25, 50, and 75, and Jessica Gonzalez-Rodriguez is his beloved wife Renata; Chrisman Studio Artist Raphaella Medina makes her Opera SB debut as the Americanborn granddaughter Diana. The set, which alternates between contemporary Houston, 1950’s Mexico, and the Chihuahuan Desert is designed by Adam Crinson, with lighting design by Brandon Baruch, both in their Opera Santa Barbara debuts. The performance will have songs and spoken dialogue in Spanish and English, with English supertitles projected above the stage.

Because Santa Barbara is so ready to welcome companies and their live performances back, we asked Kostis Protopapas to answer just a few more questions about the upcoming performance and season.

VOICE: What drew you to Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon)?

Kostis Protopapas: Cruzar is a very special piece. First of all, it was an ingenious idea to take mariachi, which is inherently operatic, combine it with traditional opera storytelling and production, and use the resulting new kind of opera to tell an important contemporary

story that resonates with millions of Americans. Equally importantly, Cruzar opened up the doors of the opera house to new audiences who may not have felt welcome there before. Cruzar has been on Opera Santa Barbara’s radar since before I came to the company, but it is difficult to fit in a traditional subscription season. As we were starting to make plans for the post-pandemic season, we asked ourselves: “what can we do now that we weren’t doing before?” Cruzar was one of the first answers that came to mind.

Is there one of the upcoming season’s operas that you are particularly excited to add to the schedule?

Protopapas: Every single one! I told you about Cruzar already. The double bill excites me because I get to conduct two pieces that I never conducted before, including a compact Puccini masterpiece with some of my favorite singers. Semele is our first baroque opera. I am excited for this fabulous Roaring 20’s production and the all-female creative team we have lined up. As One is probably the most successful American opera of the recent past, with a story taken out of everyday life. It is also an example of the tremendous impact opera can have even on the smallest of scales, with just two singers and a string quartet. Finally, Traviata is one of my favorite operas of all time, and it will be the first time I conduct a Verdi opera with the Opera SB Orchestra and Chorus!

What lasting creative effects has pandemic resilience lent to Opera SB?

Protopapas: Opera SB’s motto during the pandemic was three words: creativity, courage, community. We got our inspiration from Toni Morrison’s words: “This is precisely the time when artists

go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear.

We speak, we write, we do language.

That is how civilizations heal.”

We were determined to communicate a message of courage by creating new ways to offer the comfort and inspiration of live music and theater, even if we couldn’t do it the way we usually do. We believe that many in our community found solace and comfort in our message. We are coming out of the pandemic more convinced than ever that art is about artists reaching out and lifting up their fellow humans, and not about large budgets, grand productions, and big names.

Is there a heart message from Opera SB to the community this year?

Protopapas: I think we all got a taste of what it’s like when the theaters are closed, parks, bars, and weddings are without live music and dance, when essentially the artists leave town. The message we have is this: the responsibility for keeping vital, vibrant, Santa Barbara-made art thriving in Santa Barbara belongs to everyone who values it. The arts are a use-it-or-lose-it proposition, so now that we are open, the single most important way to support us is to buy a ticket and come to the theater.

Community News Westmont College Welcomes New Faculty

F

OUR TENURE-TRACK PROFESSORS have joined the Wesmont College Faculty for its Fall 2021 semester. www.westmont.edu

BEN CARLSON has joined the Westmont physics department after working as a Samuel Langley postdoctoral fellow at University of Pittsburgh. Currently, Carlson works on the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, and has directed a number of successful undergraduate and graduate students’ work. He intends to continue working on the ATLAS experiment with Westmont students. Also having expertise on hadronic jets and missing transverse momentum triggers, Carlson appreciates opportunities to Ben Carlson involve his students in his research, which centers largely on the Higgs boson and dark matter. He earned his doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

DAN JENSEN has joined Westmont as Director of Engineering, holding the goal of preparing adaptive engineers committed to merging engineering, science, and the arts. Previously, Jensen spent 21 years teaching engineering mechanics at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He is also a senior fellow at the International Design Center at Singapore University of Technology and Design and MIT. Now, he will work with the new engineering program which incorporates courses in engineering, physics, chemistry, and math to support students discover Dan Jensen innovative solutions. He earned his doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

GEWNHI PARK is the newest faculty member of Westmont’s psychology department. She assumes this position after recently teaching as an associate professor at Hope College in Michigan. An explorer of how the mind and body interact and influence social interaction and cognitive and emotional processes, her research has studied the interactions between the heart and brain, and how the cardiac vagal tone shows how well the brain functions. She further incorporates those findings into other cognitive processing, self-regulatory systems, and emotional processing. Park earned her doctorate in cognitive psychology from Ohio State University.

The event will honor Diana and Clyde Freeman for their dedication to the Carpinteria community.

“This year’s Bloom event is extra special, as we celebrate 50 years of inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold in addition to honoring two extraordinary leaders in our community,” said Girls Inc. Carpinteria Executive Director Jamie Collins. “We’re proud to recognize Diana and Clyde and their undeniable passion and dedication not only to Carpinteria, but also to building a better future for our youth.”

Clyde Freeman currently serves as a Senior Vice President with Montecito Bank & Trust. A committed community member, he has been involved with Girls Inc. of Carpinteria for over 12 years, Clyde and Diana Freeman having acted as Board President and a Finance Committee member. Beyond Girls Inc., he has also given back through the Carpinteria Lions Club, Carpinteria Beautiful, the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society, Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce, and the City’s Community Block Development Grant Committee.

Diana Freeman has also been a longtime supporter of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, with her involvement spanning volunteering for events to joining the Board of Directors and acting as Board Secretary. A dedicated community member, she is also a member and past president of Carpinteria Beautiful, and has previously volunteered with the Carpinteria Arts Center, Carpinteria Avocado Festival, Carpinteria Lions Club, and with the City’s Host Program.

ALASTAIR SU joins the Westmont history department in teaching U.S. history. Currently, he is finishing his first book about America and the opium trade throughout the 19th century. Upon starting his new position, Su shared that he will support students as they navigate what it means to be a U.S. citizen as well as a Christian. He further stated that as an U.S. historian, he feels that a core element of his mission is to teach civics and help students uncover what it means to be an American in our current society.

He is a Harvard University alumnus, and earned his doctorate in history from Stanford University.

Brad Daugherty Named Dream Foundation’s First Ambassador of Sports BRAD DAUGHERTY, a five-times NBA All-Star and NASCAR Team Owner, has joined Dream Foundation as the organization’s first Ambassador of Sports. Downtown Parking Committee Reviews Promenade Enforcement and Ambassador Program

HILE THE STATE STREET PROMENADE CONTINUES TO OFFER LOCALS AND VISITORS ALIKE A FRESH WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE DOWNTOWN AREA, accessibility remains a concern for many community members. In response, the City of Santa Barbara has launched efforts to enforce accessibility requirements, namely by asking businesses without preexisting outdoor dining licenses to clear their sidewalks. The City’s Downtown Parking Committee reviewed these efforts, along with the ongoing Downtown Ambassador Program, during its most recent September 9th meeting.

“In total, we’ve inspected around 170-173 different businesses,” City Parking Programs Supervisor Sarah Clark told the committee. “Of those, we ended up issuing 80 notices of violation.”

In late June, the Santa Barbara City Council announced that State Street Promenade businesses must keep their sidewalk area clear unless they have an outdoor dining license agreement from before the pandemic. Accordingly, notifications were sent out informing downtown businesses that they must clear their sidewalk areas by July 9th.

Since then, City staff ’s accessibility enforcement efforts have largely focused on removing unpermitted sidewalk items such as dining materials, retail displays, planters, and free-standing signs. Businesses in violation first receive a warning notice with a

deadline to correct the issue. If that deadline is disregarded, the business receives an Administrative Citation and is fined.

Clark shared that the majority of the businesses that received notices of violation were cooperative, quickly resolving any issues. Yet some businesses have neglected making requested changes, resulting in about six citations being sent out already, with a few more scheduled to be distributed as of September 9th.

Beyond these actions, the City has continued to work with those businesses who are interested in joining the Outdoor Dining License Program to ensure they meet accessibility requirements. Additionally, City staff hope to soon begin accessibility enforcement of the actual in-street parklets and enclosures by examining issues such as ramps, tables, clearance, and maneuverability.

“That is sort of a more specialized enforcement effort, so we’re working now on getting staff...the training that they need in order to effectively enforce those requirements and to understand the requirements that they are enforcing,” said Clark, adding that the City hopes to work with a Certified Accessibility Specialist.

After receiving these updates, the Downtown Parking Committee turned its attention to reviewing the Downtown Ambassador Program, which is managed by the Public Works Department. The program currently includes seven ambassadors, with additional recruitment efforts underway.

These ambassadors do not act as enforcement officers. Rather, they welcome downtown visitors, maintain contact with local businesses, and observe and report conditions requiring attention. They also connect people experiencing homelessness with organizations that may offer resources and assistance.

The committee reviewed the program’s August statistics, revealing that Downtown Ambassadors made a total of 119 maintenance calls, 14 police dispatch calls, and made 35 contacts with City Net to provide people experiencing homelessness resources. The Ambassadors also made 574 Municipal Code Warnings, including warnings against smoking, skateboarding/biking on the sidewalk, and individuals sleeping on the sidewalk.

“With the whole of the Promenade, I think this program is especially important and I hope that we’re able to find other sources of funding and support as we’re able to staff that,” commented committee Vice Chair Ed France. “I think this is really an important addition to our downtown that can hopefully be sustained over the long haul.”

Currently, the Courthouse Tavern serves lunch and appetizers along with its allday Happy Hour selections.

Butler ultimately plans to provide breakfast and dinner menus, as well as offer catering and will host receptions and rehearsal dinners for people celebrating weddings at the courthouse.

Butler is no stranger to the Santa Barbara restaurant and hospitality scene.

This awareness proves especially crucial given that local pollution largely stems from manufactured materials such as car fluids, litter, and pesticides.

When these harmful items land in storm drains, they can then ultimately pollute the ocean or creeks.

“An important part of preventing this pollution is educating community members about what they can do to help, because we are all the solution,” said Smith.

Coastal Cleanup Day Creek Week begins with Coastal Cleanup Day, held from 9am to 12pm noon on Saturday, September 18th. California’s largest volunteer effort, there are 26 participating cleanup locations included just within Santa Barbara County. During last year’s event, 776 volunteers prevented almost 4,000 pounds of trash from polluting our local waters.

Individuals who preregister to volunteer at a Coastal Cleanup Day location will be entered to win fun

prizes. People can also clean up on their own through the rest of September and record gathered trash via an app called “Clean Swell.”

“It offers a chance to make a difference,” said Explore Ecology Public Relations Director Jill Phelps Creek Walk Cloutier. “I think it’s empowering for people because so often news about the environment is such a downer and it’s kind of depressing on what’s happening, and this is a way that you can spend an hour to three hours of your morning and then feel Carpinteria Salt Marsh really good that you did something that has a major impact.”

Santa Barbara Remembrance Ceremony Honors 9/11 Fallen

SALUTE TO HONOR THE FALLEN and the first responders, and to celebrate the heart and soul of Democracy were all a part of a Remembrance Ceremony held at the historic Courthouse Sunken Gardens, framed by an American flag held high by two fire department ladder trucks. The September 11th ceremony was organized by the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The 9/11 attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and many long-term health issues. It was also the single deadliest incident for firefighters (340 dead) and law enforcement officers (72 dead) in the history of the United States. In addition to the deaths and injuries, there was $10 billion in damaged property.

“Twenty years ago today, we witnessed the single greatest tragedy to occur on U.S. soil in our lifetime,” commented Salud Carbajal, U.S. Representative.

Several hundred people attend the event organized by the Santa Barbara Police Department, along with members of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, and several other allied public safety agencies and government officials participated in the 20th year anniversary remembrance ceremony of the tragic events on 9/11.

“9/11 left an indelible mark on American consciousness. I remember the shock when I look back on that day and it is hard to believe it has been two decades,” continued U.S. Representative Carbajal.

HE SANTA BARBARA YACHT CLUB hosted its Annual Charity Regatta was anything but quiet! Even with the reduced venue, the musical buffet, and activities, benefitting VNA Health (formerly Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care) on Saturday, this year’s Charity Regatta’s proceeds far outdistanced those of previous years.

Community News TV Santa Barbara Welcomes New Board Members and Chair

V SANTA BARBARA, THE REGION’S COMMUNITY MEDIA ACCESS CENTER FOR CLOSE TO 50 YEARS, recently announced that six new community members have joined their Board of Directors: Laura Treat, Regina Ruiz, Courtney Frazer, Don Katich, Gary Dobbins and Rebecca Brand. Additionally, Meighann Helene has been appointed to serve as Board Chair.

“We are thrilled to have such an esteemed group of board members come together at this exciting time when community media is more important than ever,” said Erik Davis, Executive Director of TV Santa Barbara. “The new and returning board members bring a wealth of media and television experience and we are excited for the future of TV Santa Barbara.”

Meighann Helene has served on the Board of Directors since 2015, and has served as the Board’s Treasurer in the past. A current Artist in Residence Gary Dobbins Laura Treat at the Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology, she also works for the IBM Data Science and AI Elite team.

Laura Treat joins the TVSB Board of Directors as the Curator of Moving Image Collections at the UCSB Library, where she has dedicated her career to providing access to regional media.

Regina Ruiz is the Vice President Regina Ruiz Rebecca Brand of Development and Marketing at local nonprofit St. Vincent’s, also having worked as a broadcast journalist.

Courtney Frazer has become a Board member as a producer of the Apples to Zucchini Cooking Classes, previously serving as the Director of Advancement for TVSB. Don Katich, a Village Properties real estate agent, will contribute Courtney Frazer Meighann Helene knowledge from his extensive experience in local media producing as a Board member.

Rebecca Brand will also be able to provide insight from her experiences hosting and producing TV shows and digital videos for TVSB and other platforms, as well as operating Rebecca Brand Productions MEDIA. Gary Dobbins joins the Board as the co-founder of both Carpinteria’s Coastal View News and Carpinteria Magazine.

‘A Prime Example’

Virologist Carolina Arias is chosen for the 2021-22 Harold J. Plous Award

AROLINA ARIAS, an assistant professor of biology at UC Santa Barbara, has received the 2021-22 Harold J. Plous Award. One of the university’s most prestigious faculty honors, the award is given annually to an assistant professor from the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences who has shown exceptional achievement in research, teaching, and service to the university.

The award is presented by the College of Letters and Science, and was established to honor the memory of Harold J. Plous, an assistant professor of economics. It is the highest honor the College Carolina Arias of Letters and Science can bestow upon a junior faculty member.

“Carolina Arias is a prime example of a scholar who uses the tools of her research to help her community,” said Pierre Wiltzius, dean of mathematical, life, and physical sciences at UC Santa Barbara. “Her development of rapid COVID-19 testing for our campus was an essential and invaluable part of our response to the pandemic. Carolina is extremely deserving of this award.”

“It’s an honor to be commended by my colleagues for all the efforts we’ve made,” said Arias, who with her lab has been on the front lines of the university’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A virologist by training, Arias’s work has been instrumental in the development of the campus’s asymptomatic COVID-19 surveillance program, the establishment of a clinical-grade CLIA laboratory for COVID-19 testing, and the development of a program for genomic sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the identification of its variants. Through collaborations with fellow researchers, as well as with colleagues at UCSB’s Student Health Services, Cottage Hospital, and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, tracking of the virus’s movements through the campus and wider community has been enabled, and community members are kept up to date with the latest developments.

“There is so much information to sort through,” Arias said. “I felt that one good use of my time could be in trying to make sense of it myself and then transmitting what I understood to everyone.” She is also a member of UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang’s COVID-19 Response Team.

The COVID-19 activity is on top of ongoing research, teaching, and mentoring Arias continues to conduct throughout the pandemic, focusing on genomic techniques to uncover how viruses gain control of their host cells.

Arias is originally from Bogota, Colombia, where she received her B.S. and M.S. in microbiology at Universidad de los Andes. She received her Ph.D. in microbiology at New York University’s Sackler Institute for Graduate Biomedical Sciences in 2008, where she studied virus-host interactions in herpesviruses and poxviruses. As a postdoctoral fellow at UC San Francisco and then at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, she studied the genome-wide transcriptional and translational regulation of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. In January 2016, she conducted comprehensive drug screens to identify FDA-approved compounds that could be used to curtail Zika virus infection. Arias joined the UC Santa Barbara faculty in 2016.

Economic VOICE What Is Real Inflation?

“The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in August on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.5 percent in July,” the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today, September 14th. “Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 5.3 percent before seasonal adjustment.”

The FRED cpi graph to the right shows the most recent spike in retail inflation, but also its relative insignificance compared to past inflationary surges, especially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Then why so much worry about its recent spike?

Because Wall Street investors like cheap money, and bond holders’ low inflation, and they worry that the Federal Reserve might react too soon to such an inflationary surge by tightening credit, when it’s primary goal should be to keep people employed and consumers happy.

Is inflation one of the major problems facing the US economy today? You would think so listening to major commentators and some economists. Zanny Minton Bedoes, Editor in Chief of The Economist, said it was the major problem for sustainable economic growth on Fareed Zakaria’s Sunday TV cast recently, if prolonged.

Consumers and businesses also like cheap money to buy homes and things, but they aren’t so worried at present because lots of COVID-19 recovery money is available and in circulation.

Therefore, it’s a little early to be worrying about what I call real inflation—prices rising faster than wages for more than a few months. And the August CPI showed its first decline in eight months from 5.5 to 5.3 percent August.

Economists have little to say about what causes long term inflation in the US. They only have the 1970s as an example. The FRED cpi graph shows when it really peaked. It was during the 1975 and 1980 recessions largely because the 1973 Arab oil embargo cut off Middle Eastern oil on our very oil dependent, auto-driven economy—before we began switching to renewable energy sources and more energy efficient regulations on homes and businesses.

Labor unions in the 1970s were able to push their wage demands to keep up with skyrocketing prices; oil was more than $100 per barrel, and there were long lines at gas stations—those stations that still had gas to sell. It was a hectic time, but is hardly the problem today, even with fewer workers and disrupted supply chains to meet the surging economic recovery.

The Fed’s Jerome Powell has said they will be vigilant if it remains high for too long, but that would mean labor costs, which are approximately two-thirds of product costs, continue to increase as they have since the end of this pandemic-induced recession in April, 2020.

Wages and salaries rose 10.1 percent annually in July 2021, per the latest available data, an uncomfortable level if prolonged. It reached its highest level in the 1970s, per the FRED stats on wages and salaries that date from 1960. But as the Federal Reserve tightened inflation controls in 1980 by initially raising interest rates to double digits, and labor lost much of its bargaining clout as union membership declined, inflation began its long descent to the two percent average that has pretty much prevailed since the 1990s.

In fact, it has declined so much that the problem since the end of the Great Recession has been how to keep a healthy level of inflation. This was motivated by the fear of a repeat of Japan’s decades long era of deflation when its economy was shrinking.

So what inflation should we worry about? When businesses and government aren’t investing in productive enterprises, which has been the case in recent decades— with a strong safety net that makes consumers feel safe and not on the verge of bankruptcy with every unexpected downturn; such as the Biden administration has proposed; and investments in infrastructure and future technologies that will insure there are good jobs for all of US.

HE REALTORS RELIEF FOUNDATION (RRF) marked its 20th anniversary this week. Within hours of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the National Association of REALTORS began to secure contributions to help those impacted by those devastating events. The Executive Leadership team utilized its leadership, infrastructure, and standing as the world’s largest trade association to reach out to members and supporters seeking donations.

These donors stood in solidarity with their fellow countrymen and countrywomen to help affected families. They raised more than $8.4 million to provide urgent housing-related assistance for those struggling in the aftermath.

These funds were raised and distributed within 100 days to

SB Audubon Society to Host Free Fall Community Programs

OAR, EXPLORE, AND LEARN ABOUT LOCAL BIRDS and their habitats this fall as the Santa Barbara Audubon Society invites community members to participate in a series of free virtual programs. Open to all, each presentation will offer unique insights into regional nature and conservation topics, including UCSB students’ efforts, the Carrizo Plain National Monument, and the historic nesting of Western Snowy Plovers.

“We have some pretty incredible biodiversity and open space both near to us and also a little further afield but still fairly local, and these places are worth visiting and protecting, and trying to maintain for future generations,” said SBAS Program Chair Aaron Kreisberg.

For over 50 years, SBAS has worked toward protecting Santa Barbara County’s birdlife and their habitats. The organization also encourages community engagement and awareness of conservation efforts by hosting educational programs, including the popular Eyes in the Sky program that brings native birds

of prey to area classrooms and after-school programs.

In hosting this fall’s free virtual talks, SBAS Program Chairs Aaron and Emily Kreisberg hope to further connect community members to local wildlife and conservation issues.

“I’d like to think that getting outside and looking at birds is one of the more accessible, safe, activities, especially in a stretch... we’ve had,” said Aaron. “Getting outside and connecting with nature, we’d like to have it be as accessible for everybody as possible and inclusive, and so [we’re] just encouraging as many people as possible to connect with the unique open spaces and biodiversity we have in our area.”

The first program, Goleta Coast Audubon Society - A New Student Chapter of the Audubon Society at UCSB, will take place at 7:30pm on Wednesday, September 22nd.

Hosted by GCAS President and UCSB graduate student Conor McMahon, this presentation will discuss GCAS’s role as a birdwatching and conservation club at UCSB. Established in

2019, the chapter currently organizes various advocacy initiatives, conservation projects, and birding walks in the hopes of educating students and the public on conservation and birdlife protection.

Next, freelance writer and photographer Chuck Graham will present A Visual Journey through Carrizo Plain National Monument at 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 27th.

A celebrated photographer, Graham’s work has been featured in National Geographic for Kids, BBC Wildlife Magazine, and more. He has been an avid photographer of the Carrizo Plain National Monument since 2006, and recently published his first book, Carrizo Plain, Where the Mountains Meet the Grasslands. His presentation will offer attendees a stunning

glimpse of this beautiful landscape.

Finally, community members are invited to celebrate a remarkable moment for local birdlife by attending Carpinteria Snowy Plovers: A First Successful Nesting in 60 Years at 7:30pm on Wednesday, November 17th. A threatened species, the Western Snowy Plover faces regular human disturbances of their beach breeding habitats and previously had not bred at Carpinteria State Beach since 1960. Yet in Carpinteria Birdwatchers founder John Callender’s talk, attendees will learn about the successful 2021 nesting, and the factors that made it possible.

Community Environmental Council, El Gato Channel Foundation, and The City Of Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department to Hold Ribbon Cutting To Celebrate New Hydration Stations In Public Parks Newest additions in CEC’s Rethink the Drink program for water bottles, a regular water fountain spout, and a dog bowl. CEC worked with the Parks and Recreation Department to choose the location of the hydration stations. Selecting Alameda Park had particular meaning since CEC has hosted the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival here since 2009. Shoreline Park is also significant due to its proximity to the ocean where so much of our plastic waste ends up.

City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Director Jill Zachary commented, “Parks & Recreation is pleased to partner with CEC and El Gato Channel Foundation. Water bottle filling stations are a great addition to City parks.”

Two key collaborators from the El Gato Water refill stations are now publicly Channel Foundation – Board Member Gina available at Alameda Park and Shoreline Park Giannetto and Foundation Grants Manager Torrie Cutbirth – spoke to why they felt passionate about the project, and why CEC was critical to its success: “We were thrilled to bring hydration stations to two city parks, providing equitable access to water in these public spaces. CEC brought together their track record of impactful programming, partnerships, and deep community networks to streamline the process and make the project a huge success.”

This project would not have been possible without the generosity of the El Gato Channel Foundation, an organization that recognizes that reducing waste is key to addressing the plastic pollution crisis.

ELCOMING ANOTHER INNOVATION TO LOWER PLASTIC WASTE, The Community Environmental Council (CEC) will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for two bottle filling hydration stations in Alameda and Shoreline parks on Friday, September 17th at 11am at the Alameda Park hydration station, located near the Kids World playground.

Representatives from CEC and project partners El Gato Channel Foundation and City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department will speak as well as City of Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo who observed, “They will encourage everyone to use refillable bottles and embrace a sustainable lifestyle.”

CEC’s Rethink the Drink program started providing hydration stations to regional schools in 2010. Managed by Kathi King, CEC’s Climate Education and Leadership Director, the program aims to reduce dependence on single use plastic bottles while teaching kids and staff why these efforts matter to the environment. More than 100 hydration stations are at schools throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties thanks to Rethink the Drink, keeping students and staff hydrated through more than six million refills to date.

King has also led assemblies on plastic reduction for more than 37,000 students of all ages at participating schools.

“Expanding to public parks is a natural progression of our Rethink the Drink program to create community wellbeing,” stated King. “This synergistic solution reduces plastic waste while increasing public access to safe, clean water, and it could not have happened without our partnership with El Gato Channel Foundation and the City of Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department.”

Putting hydration stations in public parks has been a longtime program goal for Rethink the Drink and moves forward efforts to reduce plastic waste through CEC’s Circular Economy initiative. The new hydration stations feature a quick-fill mechanism

Initiated during the 1990s, the Gallery exhibited watercolor paintings by local architects of Santa Barbara buildings. Later, the Gallery committee expanded its mission to present exhibitions of contemporary art, architecture, and design. Throughout the pandemic, following all COVID-19 protocols, the Gallery has maintained its schedule of exhibitions with

the support of dedicated volunteers.

Artists and art organizations in the tricounty region are encouraged to apply for exhibitions (https://afsb.org/programs/art-gallery/); five are selected each year by the AFSB Gallery Committee.

Local Treasures will be installed in a celebratory salon style, creating dynamic groupings on the Gallery’s walls. Two-dimensional work including an abstract print by Tony Askew, a collage by Dug Uyesaka, and plein air paintings by Libby Smith and Nina Ward will be complemented by several reliefs – a surreal box construction by Michael Long and a geometric structure in styrene by Marilyn HelsenrottHochhauser. A weaving by Minga Takeoff by Cass Ensberg Opazo and a screen print by Claudia Borfiga will join photographs by Sara The Architectural Foundation of Santa Yerkes, Jeffrey Sippress, Pat McGinnis, and Matt Barbara is dedicated to expanding our community’s appreciation of the built Straka, as well as a sewn paper composition environment since 1983. Scheduled to take place between October 1st-24th, this will be a judged show, with the top three winning pieces being awarded $100, $75, and $50, respectively. Pieces must have been created within the past 24 months, and should be submitted between 11am-1pm Monday, September 27th at the Cypress Gallery, 119 E. Cypress Avenue.
