Santa Barbara’s educational tradition is one of the oldest in the State of California. Santa Barbara High was established in 1875 on the corner of Anapamu and De La Vina. The school was moved to its present site in 1924. It was designated an official California and City historic landmark in November 2005. Hospice of Santa Barbara is active on local campuses, including Santa Barbara High School, providing professional counseling for students. These are some of the most traumatic and complex situations in which HSB is involved.

What Matters Most S WE GEAR UP for this year’s Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara luncheon event, we would like to share this year’s theme of What Matters Most and challenge everyone to ask themselves... “What matters most in my life?” “What marks a life well lived?” “Is it how much money I made, or things I acquired?” Or is it rather “How many lives I touched, and how much love I shared?” We’d like you to consider those things that are most significant to you, personally.

UNDERSTANDING THAT UNDETECTED LEAKS DRAMATICALLY INCREASE WATER WASTE, the Montecito Water District recently checked every customer’s meter for the faucet icon that indicates a potential leak on the property as a part of their “Find and Fix a Leak” initiative. Over 800 faucet icons have been identified, leading the District to mail notices to each of these customers so they can address their leaks and minimize their potential water waste.
“Customers frequently ask about the status of the ‘smart meter’ program,” explains the Montecito Water District’s statement on the initiative. “The District has installed new meters, but the ‘smart’ part that will provide real-time data has been delayed due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips. When fully functional the new meters will provide benefits such as: leak alerts when out-of-the ordinary use is detected, and customer access to their usage data.”

Salud Carbajal Entrega $3 Millones de Dólares en Mejoras de Edificios con Fondos Federales para el Centro Comunitario de Goleta
TO WORK TO END THE EMERGENCY BLOOD SHORTAGE taking place across the Central Coast and the country, the nonprofit blood services provider Vitalant encourages community members to donate blood in the coming weeks. The shortage is especially acute for type O blood, however, appointments for all blood types are needed. The number of eligible donors has recently increased due to the Food and Drug Administration changing their restrictions on people being unable to donate blood if they had traveled to France, Ireland or the United Kingdom due to the risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (mad cow disease).
AFTER REMAINING PARTIALLY CLOSED since January 2021 due to needing seismic improvements, the Goleta Community Center will soon receive additional much-needed renovations and improvements following Representative Salud Carbajal’s delivery of $3 million dollars in federal Community Project Funding.
COMMUNITY
Vitalant to Host Blood Drives to Replenish Critical Shortage
“It is imperative that we get this important community resource fully operational and available to the large and diverse populations that gather here,” said Mayor Paula Perotte. “We are beyond grateful for Rep. Carbajal’s successful and ongoing efforts to secure the funding necessary for us to make ADA improvements to this important city-owned building following the seismic upgrade project.”
Seismic improvements will include the installation of additional anchorage systems that will secure connections at the walls and ceiling to protect the building in the event of an earthquake. These upgrades will be funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant of $5 million, including matching funds of $1.3 million from the City of Goleta. The seismic improvements are anticipated to begin in winter 2022, with the first phase of ADA to follow shortly. The City of Goleta will take over management of the GCC, which is currently being operated by the Goleta Valley Community Center (GVCC) organization, in January 2023. The center was acquired by the city in 2013. To learn more about the GCC visit www.thegvcc.org
“The Goleta Valley Community Center plays a pivotal role in the community, serving all facets and age groups,” said Carbajal. “I am proud to have secured $3 million for renovations through Community Project funding, helping to ensure that the Center remains a resource for many years to come.”

Ahlora Smith, as Juliet, and Nicholas Enea, as Romeo
“I continue to be surprised by Romeo and Juliet,” he said. “Yes, they’re the most famous lovers in history. But there’s so much in it that people don’t realize is there — so much depth of character and imagery. So many complexities.
POLARIZED SOCIETY IS ENGULFED IN TRIBALISM and an increasingly irrational hatred of one’s fellow citizens. This animosity spirals into widespread violence and bloodshed. That’s a frightening forecast for our future. It’s also a spot-on description of 16th-century Verona, as Shakespeare portrays it in Romeo and Juliet.

So violence is a constant threat, which raises the stakes enormously when a young man from the Montague clan locks eyes at a party with a young girl from the Capulet family, and they instantly form an unbreakable bond. A provocation in normal times, this pairing becomes a real threat to civil order.
“I ask the actors, ‘Have you ever been in love? Have you ever been in love with someone your parents hated? Do you believe in love at first sight? Would you give up everything for love?’” Appel continued. “This gets them thinking about their own lives, and the ways they can relate to the text. You can’t play an icon.”
“We’re going for something that feels contemporary, but also timeless,” said Appel, who noted the play has been cut so that it clocks in at just over two hours including intermission. “The clothing is contemporary, but it’s also evocative of an earlier time as “Thewell.”show is reliant on us — the actors,” added Smith. “Our voice comes out in this production, and I love that. It’s such a collaborative production. Our set is the theater itself, and one long table. There was a time where there was a consideration of bringing in another table, and we all shot that down.”
“I think we need the driving edge of rock music — heavy on the electric guitar,” he said. “Much of it will be recognizable to young people in the audience. It’s a way of helping them to recognize ‘This world is my Thisworld.’”isthe second time Naked Shakes has produced this play — the first was in 2010 — but Appel reports he keeps finding hidden nuances in Shakespeare’s masterful text.
“Romeo and Juliet is hopefully not a harbinger of things to come, but it is a warning,” said Irwin Appel, director of the Naked Shakes production of the classic tragedy, which the UC Santa Barbara Department of Theater and Dance will stage beginning Thursday, September 1st, in the UCSB Studio Theatre. The first five shows will be free of admission, though tickets can be reserved.
“As we all know, we are living in a very divided country, and there’s no sign of it getting better,” he noted. “For me, that makes Romeo and Juliet a play for this place and time.” When most people think of this ever-popular Shakespeare play, they generally focus on the title characters, who have become architects of doomed young love. But Appel, chair of the department and director of the Naked Shakes program, likes to approach the Bard’s plays by first focusing on their social settings — the communities in which they take place. “I like to ask, ‘What is the society like before the play begins? What about it allows the action of this particular play to emerge?’” he said. “A Richard III could only emerge from a society that was primed for it.”
A different sort of production could run with this idea, set the play in modern-day America, making Romeo a member of a MAGA household and Juliet a Black Lives Matter protestor. But that’s not the style of Naked Shakes. Since 2006, it has kicked off each academic year with a stripped-down production that emphasizes the actors and the text. Audiences are free to make their own connections between the play and their own lives, or the world around them.

“Early in the play, the prince says ‘three civil brawls’ between the Capulets and Montagues ‘have thrice disturbed our streets.’ So there have been three recent city-wide brawls. That’s the state of this community when the play begins.”
“We have an interesting mix of students in this production. We have some of our most advanced BFA acting students, and non-acting majors who have never been in a play before. We all get together, study the play, and get on the same page — pun intended.”Sohow do you coax the actors into playing fully fleshed-out characters rather an all-too-familiar archetypes?“Byfinding the nuance, and the juice, in each line, each image, each thought,” he said. “By challenging the actors to not only understand what they are saying, but to understand these are the only words they could possibly use at that moment, in that situation. I want them to act from the heart, rather than putting on a ‘Shakespearean voice’ or act like they might think they’re supposed to in a Shakespeare play.
“We turn the table. We roll it. We climb on it,” Nicholas Enea, a third-year BFA acting student who plays Romeo, said of that single large scenic element. “We sometimes turn it on its side, and use the metal bar legs. That I love.”
Another attempt at making the material relatable will be the soundtrack, which Appel is assembling from student suggestions.
“It’s a play about young people, about love, about what keeps us apart and what draws us together.”
“So many characters who are tired of fighting, but it only takes one person to light the match again,” said Ahlora Smith, the third-year BFA acting student who plays Juliet. “To me, that’s how this show is most comparable to modern-day society. We see that a lot in real life.”
In the case of R&J, the setting — the city-state of Verona — is in deep turmoil.
“The whole point of Naked Shakes is it’s about actor-generated theatricality,” added Appel. “I’m always looking for actors who are adept at precision of language and very physically expressive.

Students welcome it but for those who have paid down their debt on time, it is not going to help.

Nature also signaled that the seasons have already changed as migratory birds began their flights earlier. Whales must have sensed the change as well, as they, too, headed south. As a community along the shoreline, we are well aware that the warming of our oceans impacts the entire ecosystem, as animals, as well as humans, are forced to adapt to nature’s unexpected changes.

Oceans cover over 70 percent of the surface of the earth, provide 90 percent of the living space, and are integral to all known life on our planet. Scientific evidence clearly shows that people are causing a decline in the ocean’s health… – on a global scale. Science has come to understand and value the important fact that our oceans sustain all life on the planet: They provide life-giving oxygen, regulate the climate, feed the world with needed protein, provide a place of spiritual connection, and sustain the delicate balancing act between living organisms and the physical forces of Earth. These warming seas are having a profound effect on oceanic processes and marine life. Today’s loss of ocean biodiversity is staggering!Ourkids’ lives are changing too. They’re back in school earlier than ever, and experiencing education’s current focus Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematicson - STEM - programs at every grade level. An emphasis on STEM allows for opportunities for the next generation to learn about maritime and marine science and be informed and empowered to present innovative solutions to the climate crisis facing the planet and their future. There is especially an urgent need for young women to view the sciences as potential career options. One extra curricular opportunity in the community for girls to discover their fascination with the natural world is the Girls in Ocean Science Conference hosted by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Returning for its second year, this innovative conference has been expanded to two days of programming. The conference provides a hands-on experience for a maximum of 40 junior high school students and up to 48 high school students to interact with female scientists who will share their lives, careers, and interests, and let students explore maritime and ocean science based fields of study. This year’s Co-chairs are Holly Lohuis, Marine Biologist, Naturalist, Educator; Penny Owens, Educations and Community Outreach Director Santa Barbara Channel Keeper; and Jean-Michel Cousteau, Ocean Futures Society. The goal of the conference is to bring together bright minds and spark ideafocused conversations and common experiences that foster learning, inspiration, andThewonder.conference is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st, 2022, for students in grades six to eight, and for Sunday, October 2nd, 2022 for those in grades nine to twelve. Program activities will take place from 9am to 3pm each day. The Girls in Ocean Science program is open to the entire community and to all young women who are be interested in attending the conference and learning more about female scientists and opportunities in the marine sciences.

INSPIRED BY THE TRUE LOVE STORY BETWEEN THE CENTRAL PARK ZOO’S MOST POPULAR PENGUINS, And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell is a delightful celebration of families of all forms. Published in 2005, the picture book follows Roy and Silo, two male penguins who became a couple and adopted a penguin chick within their habitat. The book became the sixth most banned and challenged book from 2010 to 2019 according to the American citingchallengesAssociation,Librarywithconsistentlyitsportrayalofan LGBTQ+ relationship as the cause. As readers search for stories to read in honor of national Banned Books Week from September 18th to 24th, And Tango Makes Three presents a positive, inclusive read that is ideal for all ages. Featuring adorable illustrations by Henry Cole, And Tango Makes Three begins by describing all of the various animal families at the Central Park Zoo, including the penguin habitat. Readers learn about how the girl and boy penguins traditionally court each other and pair off to raise their own chicks. In a sweet, straightforward manner, the book explains how Roy and Silo fall in love the same way the other penguin couples do, playing and swimming together, and even building their own nest.

Eventually, when hatching season arrives, Roy and Silo begin sitting on a rock in place of an egg within their nest, inspiring their keeper to give them an egg in need of adoption. They lovingly welcome and raise their baby girl, Tango. Rather than focus on differences between Roy and Silo and the other penguins, And Tango Makes Three emphasizes that their relationship and family are rooted in the same sense of love and commitment. Repeatedly, readers are told how they care for each other and Tango just like the other penguin families, animal families, and “all the families in the big city around them.” This ensures the book serves as an important example of representation for young readers with two fathers or two mothers. For other readers, the story acts as an approachable introduction to LGBTQ+ relationships, and increases awareness that ultimately it is love that defines a family.

The point is the ‘slowdown’ was so mild and corporate profits high enough that corporations continued to hire rather than fire, and consumers chose to spend rather than save during the inflationary surge.

“The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell to a one-month low of 243,000, indicating layoffs remain near record lows and that a tight labor market is keeping the U.S. economy moving forward,” said MarketWatch’s Jeffry Bartash.TheAtlanta Federal Reserve’s third quarter GDP Now estimate ranges from 1.3 to 2.5 percent growth. I will take either of those numbers, as it signals good months of growth ahead, no matter what the Fed Governors do to bring down Continuedinflation.growth depends in part on how consumers flush with savings continue to react to inflation.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis press release said, “Real GDP decreased less in the second quarter than in the first quarter, decreasing 0.6 percent after decreasing 1.6 percent. The smaller decrease reflected an upturn in exports and a smaller decrease in federal government spending that were partly offset by a larger decline in private inventory investment, a slowdown in consumer spending, and downturns in nonresidential fixed investment and residential fixed investment. Imports decelerated.”Whatthis means is that the red-hot job market (528,000 new nonfarm payroll jobs in July), and 1.5 percent increase in consumer spending in Q2 (that makes up some 70 percent of economic activity) have kept our economy from falling into a deeper slowdown, or recession—whatever economists want to call it.

In fact, inflation is already declining, mainly because world oil prices have plunged, and food prices may also soften with the good news that grain shipments from the Ukraine have finally begun. That’s in part because U.S. consumers’ expectations for where inflation will be in a year and three years dropped sharply in July, a New York Federal Reserve survey showed on Monday, as reported by Reuters, indicating U.S. central bankers might be winning the fight to keep the outlook for price growth as they battle to tame high inflation— although official CPI inflation numbers out later this week will confirm or deny.
Most surveys of their expectations say that they don’t see a prolonged inflation, in part because it’s easy to see that the Ukraine war, that is pushing up food and energy prices, will eventually end, and supplychain constrictions will ease as other countries recover from the COVID pandemic.Chinais having special difficulties in recovering from the pandemic, in part because it is run by an extremely dictatorial communist party that believes it can only hold onto power by suppressing any signs of COVID symptoms with draconian lockdowns, just as it suppresses its populace in other ways to prevent it from looking weak in the public eye.
By Harlan Green, Special to VOICE, August 25, 2022 IT LOOKS LIKE THE SLOWDOWN in U.S. economic growth may end as quickly as it began. Second quarter economic growth was less negative in the BEA’s second estimate of GDP growth, because key drivers of growth have been increasing in the latest months.

Born in 1930 in Brooklyn, Firestone channels his desire to explore the human condition through his two passions: psychology and art. Completing postgraduate work on schizophrenia before launching a private practice in the 1960s, he has authored over 15 books examining death anxiety, intimacy and relationships, and more. Inspired by his experiences, Firestone began to express himself first through painting and later via digital art. Using computer imaging, Firestone creates dynamic, abstract scenes reflecting emotions and relationships. His work has been exhibited internationally, and even became the basis for his original clothing line featured at New York Fashion Week in the early 2000s.“Working with the computer as a creative instrument, I have attempted to invent something feelingful, sensitive and beautiful out of an unfeeling machine,” Firestone explains in his artist statement. Firestone’s creative process begins by free associating with art before ultimately drawing out a theme to highlight. He expressed his unique style developed naturally, allowing him to merge his knowledge of the human mind and emotions with“Iart.just think that art is an important part of life, imagination is an important part of life, and people get caught up in practicalities,” shared Firestone. “It’s important for them to be free.”
Visitors entering Tamsen Gallery are immediately struck by the contrast of Firestone’s energetic colors against the white interior. The bright colors unify Firestone’s work across subjects, from red backdropping two multi-colored swirls titled The Lovers, to a uniform collection of primary colored shapes evoking the feeling of waiting in Bus Stop
Other photograph-based works connect more overtly to the human experience, such as The Stranger, showing a man mournfully gazing into the distance. The remaining pieces depict cityscapes made of waterjetcut metal; a testament to Firestone’s love of cities. Copies of Firestone’s books rest throughout the gallery, offering insights into his research and art.

A local resident for 30 years, Firestone previously maintained a studio on upper State Street. In opening the new gallery, he and Artist Liaison and Gallery Director Mimi Wolfe hope to contribute to the resurgence of activity on State Street and connect with passersby, art collectors, and interior“He’sdesigners.alwayswanted to have a space that’s just beautiful that people can have access to,” said Wolfe, who has worked with Firestone for the past 20 years with his clothing line and art. She added, “[We hope] to have people come in and fall in love with a piece and want to have it in their home.”

“Color represents emotion in general,” explained Firestone. “That’s my way of expressing my emotions.”

“I consider feeling very important in both art and psychology,” said Firestone. “It’s a basic part of being human, a very important part of being human.”
“His work is beautiful, it’s vibrant, it has feeling, you can look at it and appreciate the color, but also the emotion,” voiced Wolfe. “I feel like he’s an innovator, and he’s always pushing to what’s next, what’s new, and that’s exciting to me.”Tamsen Gallery will participate in Downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursdays, as well as host its own monthly events, including a night of Italian music and food called Bistro Musicale in October. The gallery is also available to rent for private events.
T FIRST GLANCE, THE BOLD SHAPES AND SWIRLING COLORS of artist and clinical psychologist Robert W. Firestone present powerful, abstract patterns. Yet upon examining the works’ specific titles, human figures appear, joining rows of cityscape scenes and altered photographic images that evoke key emotions. Together, they form the compelling body of Firestone’s computer-generated art on display at Tamsen Gallery’s new State Street location.
