National Drive Electric Week is a nationwide celebration aimed at helping the United States transition rapidly and equitably to cleaner transportation in order to protect communities from pollution and worsening climate change impacts. Transportation is the largest source of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in California. To prevent further climate impacts and protect our air, the California Air Resources Board issued a rule last month that fully bans the sale of new gas-powered cars starting in 2035.
The webinar will also highlight support available through CEC partner Access Clean California, a statewide program to help people take advantage of the many state and local incentives that make electric cars and clean energy more affordable. You can visit their website to find incentives and explore options, with information provided in multiple languages, including English and Spanish: https://app.accesscleanca.org To view a full line-up of events visit www.driveelectricweek.org/attend

Community Environmental Council, Electric Drive 805 Will Explore Electric Vehicle Landscape
Both Hernández and CEC’s Climate Justice Associate, Alhan Diaz-Correa, will share knowledge and personal experiences of driving electric during CEC’s Get Charged: Everything You Need to Drive Electric webinar on October 6 from 12-1:15pm. This is part of a new webinar series focused on getting fossil fuels out of day-to-day life.
RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL DRIVE ELECTRIC WEEK, The Community Environmental Council and their Electric Drive 805 coalition partners will sponsor free, in-person and virtual events scheduled for September 23rd to October 2nd, which will highlight affordability, environmental, and health benefits of electric vehicles.“Recently we’ve seen strong momentum for climate solutions at national, regional, and local scales,” stated Michael Chiacos, CEC Director of Climate Policy, who has driven an electric car since 2012.
This year’s National Drive Electric Week comes at a pivotal moment, as federal and state initiatives make the switch to electric more accessible and affordable. On the California Central Coast, we’re ahead of this curve. Thanks to efforts by CEC and partners, the region boasts a robust and growing infrastructure for electric vehicle charging—2,017 chargers already in place and 1,424 more being built over the next two years at workplaces, multi-family properties, and public destinations across Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties. Combined, these three counties have three times the national average of per capita EV drivers.

Planned events will share valuable information about how everyone, regardless of income level or transportation needs, can access a variety of money-saving incentives, including programs that provide increased financial assistance for low-to-moderate income
EV can be a cleaner and cheaper option for individuals who need to drive, thanks to a number of local and state EV incentives,” said Jen Hernández, CEC’s Climate Justice Manager, who used these incentives to afford her own clean vehicle.
“The Federal Inflation Reduction Act, coupled with California’s latest round of ambitious climate legislation, provides a rare opportunity to take strong climate action now,” continued Chiacos. “Getting polluting cars and trucks off the road is critical to securing a healthier and more resilient future for humans and our planet.”

STUDENTS CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH and return to school playgrounds, Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago shows readers the value of remaining true to themselves while making friends. Published in 2020, the picture book draws inspiration from Drago’s childhood in Mexico City and her own struggles to make friends in school. The story focuses on Gustavo, a timid ghost who adores playing the However, violin. while Gustavo wants to become friends with the other young monsters and talk to his crush, Alma, he remains so shy that he can’t bring himself to talk to anyone. Determined to change this, Gustavo decides to let his music speak for him and invites his peers to a Día de los Muertos violin concert at the cemetery. Everyone loves Gustavo’s music, and asks him to become their friend.
Photocourtesyof Amazon
Drago’s gorgeous illustrations enhance this uplifting story, reflecting Mexican art traditions as Gustavo prepares for Día de los Muertos in both her style and by drawing ofrendas, calaveras (sugar skulls), and papel picado. In making Gustavo a ghost, young readers are presented with a straightforward metaphor of feeling like nobody can see you — literally, in Gustavo’s case.
Bookworm Gustavo the Shy Ghost
Readers are left with the message that the key to making friends is to be brave and to allow others to get to know you for who you really are. The book emphasizes that true friends will not expect you to change for them, showing that Gustavo’s friends continue to appreciate and love him even though he remains quiet by nature. These reminders, combined with Drago’s imaginative characters and illustrations make Gustavo the Shy Ghost the perfect book for back-to-school reading and preparing for Día de los Muertos.

Opera Santa Barbara’s Artistic and General Director Kostis Protopapas will conduct the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra and Chorus. There will even be cannon explosions and church bells heard in this expansive production.
By Robert F. Adams, Special to VOICE
The opera will be sung in Italian with the English super titles projected above the stage, and will run just over two hours. Tighten your seat belts for this anticipated show.
Puccini’s Spectacular TOSCA Veering into The Granada
Opera Santa Barbara is gathering a spectacular team of orchestra members, considerable star power with the lead singers, chorus, and other artists and staff, all affectionately nicknamed, “Team Tosca.” Audiences will be delighted to see Greek soprano Eleni Calenos in one of her signature roles and her return to this company after her starring roles in OSB’s 2018 La Boheme, and in Madama Butterfly the following season. The performance will also feature the remarkable bass-baritone Wayne Tigges portraying the sinister Baron Scarpia, and the rich voice of the tenor Adam Diegel as the strong-willed painter Mario Cavaradossi.
Reserved tickets for the Granada performance at 6pm can be purchased at www.granadasb.org or by calling 805-899-2222.
This new multi-media Tosca will be directed by accomplished director Layna Chianakas who deftly helmed the dark one-act operas El amor brujo/Il tabarro for the company in 2021. Tosca will also feature projections by artist Yuki Izumihara and filmed sequences by Zach Mendez with atmospheric lighting by Helena Kuukka. According to director Chianakas, “Our Tosca will combine the traditional with the conceptual and live performance with film” in this thrill-ride of drama and music.
Artistic and General Director Kostis Protopapas
The opera’s backdrop is the politically charged atmosphere of Rome. The Pope’s ruling class, allied with Austria, is colliding with the Napoleon’s Republic forces, with the back and forth struggle for control of Italy. Based on a popular 1880s play by French playwright Victorien Sardou, which he developed as a work for Sarah Bernhardt, the story was adapted by Puccini and his librettists.Theopera
The story also contains a compelling love story, especially expressed by the music and the arias, the kind of operatic arc that Puccini excelled at as seen in his other masterpieces La Boheme and Madame Butterfly. This is one of Puccini's best musical efforts and is probably the most influenced by Wagner’s explorations of what opera could strive toward. This mainstay work is not only compelling but may bring tears to the eyes of the fortunate audience that will see this single performance.
Opera Santa Barbara is kicking off its 2022-2023 season with one of the most remarkable operas. This milestone production is slated for Saturday, October 1st, with a start time of 6pm. The production will feature a full orchestra and amazing singing, including a chorus of all ages on the main stage of The Granada’s historic proscenium. Complete with the remarkable score and libretto, which premiered in 1900, this outing will dazzle audiences with tragic, dramatic art set to Puccini’s indelible score.

illustrates some of the deadly harshness of the early 19th century and the cruelty practiced in that historical time, before the emerging developments of democracy and human rights. The opera portrays a ruling class that will resort to anything to protect the status quo.

oceans.“We greatly appreciate Marc and Lynne’s unwavering dedication to environmental conservation, and we are honored by their partnership with UC Santa Barbara on the Benioff Ocean Initiative and the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory,” Yang continued. “It is a testament to the faith and confidence they have in our campus.”
The new donation is the largest ever for ocean science at UC Santa Barbara — and one of the largest known gifts anywhere to support ocean research.
In addition, the scientists have teamed with communities across the globe in the Clean Currents Coalition to pioneer new methods for arresting plastic pollution in the ocean by capturing it first in rivers. Teams in Ecuador, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, Panama, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have developed technologies to intercept more than two million pounds of plastic waste and divert the majority of it to be repurposed or recycled. A semiautonomous interceptor known as a “trash wheel” has just been launched in Panama — a milestone in the global fight against plastic pollution.
Take a deeper dive into the work and accomplishments of the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory https://boi.ucsb.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Benioff-Ocean-Science-Laboratory-White-Paper-2022.pdfhere:
“I’m proud of all that our team has been able to achieve thus far at UC Santa Barbara. But the most important work is ahead,” said McCauley, the laboratory’s director. “The Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory is excited to dedicate the full power of UC Santa Barbara science to the urgent fight against climate change. Not only does the ocean depend on winning the climate battle — we all do.”
With a key mandate to promote diversity in ocean science and in ocean solution-making, the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory provides paid internships for UC Santa Barbara undergraduate students from Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and other underrepresented communities, partnering on ocean outreach and training programs, and supporting research on environmental justice in the ocean.
Much of that work will surely take place in what today is known as the Marine Biotechnology Lab Building, which for decades has served as an epicenter for marine research at UC Santa Barbara, and hosted researchers and students from across campus. Scientists based there have contributed to major discoveries, including advances in materials science inspired by abalone, squid, and other marine species; leading research on how carbon and silicon cycle in the ocean; the innovation of new plastics that will degrade in the sea; and promising new methods for sucking more CO2 from the air and storing it in the ocean to slow climate change.

With a gift of $10 million, the Benioffs in 2016 created the Benioff Ocean Initiative at UC Santa Barbara — an effort that has since grown into a globally respected model for using science to collaboratively solve the world’s most pressing ocean problems and replicate these successes.Andsuccesses there have been. The newly renamed Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory group partnered with researchers worldwide on Whale Safe, California’s first automated whale detection system. Meant to prevent whale-ship collisions — a leading threat to endangered whale population recovery — the system is powered by artificial intelligence, whale occurrence data, and satellite data. Whale Safe was piloted in the Santa Barbara Channel. The Benioff Oceans team today announced the launch of an expansion system off the coast of San Francisco to help reduce whale deaths in the Bay Area.
Next up? The laboratory is in the planning stage for a $10 million challenge to contribute to global efforts to stop the advance of climate change. The formal launch of this

“We are deeply grateful to Marc and Lynne Benioff for their extraordinary generosity,” said UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Henry Yang. “This transformative gift establishing the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory underscores the Benioffs’ continuing commitment to marine science research that seeks to address the most pressing ocean environmental issues of our time. The laboratory builds on the achievements of the Benioff Ocean Initiative, whose groundbreaking research under the direction of Professor Douglas McCauley has expanded our knowledge and understanding of marine ecosystems and promoted innovative solutions to the concerns facing our world’s
The Benioff Oceans group also has developed new tools for detecting sharks using drones to promote coexistence of people and sharks; harnessed the power of ocean big data to help set up new protected areas in the ocean and strategically manage the high seas; and used science to promote awareness of how new industrial activities, like ocean mining, could negatively affect ocean health.
“This transformative gift will build on the existing success of the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory team, support cutting-edge research, and technological advances that will help us both better understand our marine environments, and apply actionable solutions to the problems they face,” said Pierre Wiltzius, Susan and Bruce Worster Dean of Science at UC Santa Barbara. “With the extraordinary vision and generosity of the Benioffs, UC Santa Barbara has strengthened its status as one of the leading marine research institutions on the west coast.”
new climate project, and more details on the effort, will be released next year.
RIVEN TO IMPROVE AND SAFEGUARD THE HEALTH OF OUR OCEANS through science and technology, Marc and Lynne Benioff have made a gift of $60 million to UC Santa Barbara, one of the world’s most important marine research centers.
The gift builds on the Benioffs’ legacy of support to the campus to address ocean problems and advance sciencebased solutions and establishes the new Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory. They previously have invested more than $28 million in ocean programs and collaborative partnerships at UC Santa Barbara.
“Around the world, our ocean and the millions of species that inhabit it, as well as the billions of people who depend upon a healthy ocean, are in danger. The escalating damage to our ocean from climate change and other threats cannot be the legacy we pass along to future generations,” said Marc Benioff. “Lynne and I are so thankful we are able to support the incredible marine science community at UC Santa Barbara and the collaborations they’ve forged with ocean scientists internationally to develop the innovative solutions needed to help bring our oceans and planet back to health.”
The bulk of this transformative philanthropy, $50 million, will go toward expanding the important work of the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (formerly the Benioff Ocean Initiative). The remaining $10 million will be invested to upgrade and renovate the university’s Marine Biotechnology Lab, a premier ocean research facility overlooking Campus Point. The building will be renamed for the Benioffs, to honor their commitment to ocean science.
“I applaud the Benioffs’ gift to UC Santa Barbara,” said Ambassador Peter Thomson, the UN’s Special Envoy for the Ocean. “It represents a great contribution in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science. I look forward to the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory providing the good science we need for the healthy ocean we want.”
These facilities will be modernized and vastly improved thanks to the Benioffs, whose gift marks an unprecedented investment in the future of ocean science at UC Santa Barbara. In recognition of their legacy commitment — and in their honor — the building also will be renamed Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory.

Market traders and even retail players in financial markets must be experiencing whiplash with Fed Governors continually pronouncing their take on current inflation conditions.Yesterday’s 1200-point drop in the DOW and 100 plus point drop in the S&P indexes should be a lesson for traders to take their finger off the trigger more often and not keep firing indiscriminately at such a moving target as U.S. stock and bond prices.

So, the Fed may be looking in the wrong direction (the 1970s) for the causes of inflation. Wages, which were considered the main culprit for rising prices in the 70s, aren’t rising as they did then; they have in fact fallen 2.8 percent behind the latest inflation surge.

rising inflation is also the superstrong Dollar making import prices cheaper for consumers and industrial materials.
It’s difficult to steer in the right direction when eyes are focused on the rear view mirror and stagflation fears of another era.
IS WORSE, inflation rates, say, of four to five percent—slightly above historical averages, and average gas prices maybe $3.50 per gallon as they are today—or raising short term rates enough to make consumers pay more and job losses
Our mission is to provide accessible news for everyone
As financial markets continue to plunge on fears that the Fed will slow down growth so much that it will induce a recession, economists such as Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stiglitz are warning the Fed may go too far.

“There are several reasons to hold off. The first is simply that inflation has slowed sharply. Consumer price index (CPI) inflation – the measure most relevant to households –was zero in July, and it is likely to have been zero or even negative in August (was 0.1%). Similarly, the personal consumption expenditure (PCE) deflator – another
“Monetary policy typically affects economic performance with long and variable lags, especially in times of upheaval,” said Professor Stiglitz in a recent Project Syndicate article. “Given the depth of geopolitical, financial, and economic uncertainty – not least about the future course of inflation –the Fed would be wise to pause its rate hikes and wait until a more reliable assessment of the situation is possible.”
often-used measure based on GDP accounts – fell by 0.1 percent in July.”
the devil’s bargain the Fed seems to be offering Americans by Fed Chair Powell insisting that, “Reducing inflation is likely to require a sustained period of below-trend growth,” in his speech to the central bankers and economists gathered at the base of the Grand Tetons.
Wholesalesspike?prices are falling even faster—with the Producer Price Index (PPI) down -0.1 percent in August reported today [9.12.22]. The increase in the core prices without the volatile food and energy prices over the past year also slowed to 5.6 percent from 5.8 percent.Itmakes more sense that markets should wait for the PPI index to come out before passing judgement on the Consumer Price Index, since the PPI ingredients (such as raw material prices) will tell us how retail (CPI) prices are trending. But, no, financial markets work on the hair-trigger principle, are too impatient in the one-click digital markets with their herd mentality to wait another day for the PPI
Why not look at the much more severe and temporary supply-chain disruptions; the Ukraine war, and China’s COVID lockdowns as the major cause for the inflation

In a cynical act of cruelty, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis used these people to draw national attention to himself in his bid for the presidency, feeding on fears of immigrants. “Give me your tired, your poor…and ship them away.”

To boot, there weren’t enough Venezuelan asylum-seekers in Florida, so DeSantis scooped them up from Texas, using tax dollars of his state’s citizens.
HAS ANNOUNCED a new “forever name.” For the last 52 years, CALM has advanced its mission to prevent childhood trauma, heal children and families, and build resilient communities throughout Santa Barbara County. With a deep commitment to clinical excellence, their highly skilled clinicians have provided a robust continuum of care to transform lives and reinvest in ourHowever, communities.astheir services have evolved throughout this time, it became clear that the former acronym did not accurately reflect their work or embody their definition of trauma nor our comprehensive approach to clients’ healing and recovery, according to a press release.
I prefer the sense of mutual care and community on Martha’s Vineyard where right now it’s incredibly beautiful and quiet.
When a child experiences trauma, our entire community is impacted. To combat the effects of childhood trauma, CALM is here to support families in need of strength and healing. CALM’s evidence-based programs represent a continuum of care that addresses the safety and wellbeing of children and families across Santa Barbara County. Approximately 2,700 clients receive individual and group therapy through CALM’s clinics in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc and thousands more receive community-based education and mental health supports. CALM is committed to preventing childhood trauma, healing children and families, and building resilient communities throughout Santa Barbara County. To learn more, visit calm4kids.org.

Writer Vicki Riskin lost her Montecito home in the 1/9 disaster and now lives on Martha’s Vineyard most of the year, returning often to Santa Barbara. Crooning with sweet vocals that reflect his Texas roots, Crockett’s thoughtful lyrics embody the persisting charm of the American southern and western regions.

WITH TRADITIONAL ARTISTIC MEDIUMS TO CRAFT WHOLLY ORIGINAL WORKS, artists Evelyn Contreras and Tamar Siegfried Rosa Halpern create pieces that are as intriguing as they are beautiful. Through October 19th, Santa Barbara City College’s Atkinson Gallery will highlight these artists through an engaging exhibition. Contreras’ work reimagines printmaking in multimedia formats, as demonstrated in the gallery’s series of cinematic flip book machines. Viewers will be able to examine these flip book machines at three neongreen viewing stations. Also on display will be Contreras’ sculptural corner work Suspension, reminding viewers of a Rorschach inkblot. Halpern’ works with paintings, prints, and scupltures are very much time-based, using titles to reflect the artist’s intentions and mindset at creation. The Atkinson Gallery exhibition will showcase three of Halpern’s new works on linen incorporating Chinese Crinkled Silk; three framed UV prints on plexiglass and aluminum, and three sculptures of UV printed plexiglass. http://gallery.sbcc.edu

Naming a Face, 2022, Bronze by Brad Howe
, wit, strength, stillness, and motion, Brad Howe’s sculptures are dynamic experiments in color and form. An exhibition of his work opens on Saturday, October 1st at Caldwell Snyder Gallery, 1266 Coast Village Road, from 3 to 6pm.“My sculptures examine vitality and celebrate beauty,” Howe has said. “Their aim is to capture the vigor of life and radiate with unabashed potentiality. These are the issues that stimulate me as a person and as an artist, and that are discussed over and over with those who sit with me at my fire and with those at whose fire I find myself sitting.”
