UDDENLY, THE SARS COV2 VIRUS FOUND ITS WAY INTO OUR SPECIES, forcing all of us into an entirely new reality. Recognizing our obligation to continue providing access to the most vulnerable members of our community, and the need to do it safely, Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics jumped to a totally different health delivery system. By state health authority mandate, we limited dental services to emergencies only and staff began offering medical and behavioral services in a totally new and unfamiliar way through tele-health.

Four days after the governor issued his self-isolation order, our providers were providing virtual access through tele-health, and dental providers were using teledentistry for routine follow up and for pediatric wellness checks. They also used this tool to conduct health screenings. For instance, it is known that gum disease is more frequent in people suffering from diabetes, so the dentists called their patients carrying this diagnosis to ask if they had ever been screened for diabetes. Those who had not were directed to a medical provider for further work-up.

Social distancing was enforced and all staff wore masks and did frequent hand hygiene. Chairs in the reception area were spaced at six-foot intervals, and all patients and visitors were screened at the door. Patients who presented with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 were given Charles C. Fenzi, MD an appointment at the end of the day to be evaluated in their cars by a physician in full Chief Executive Officer/Chief protective gear where a screening swab was collected if indicated.

Medical Officer The staff of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics were able to pivot nimbly to this new crisis so that throughout the pandemic our patients have had the high quality, comprehensive, compassionate, and affordable care they have come to expect from our organization. We have now reopened all of our services, including dental care, in a way that ensures the safety of our patients and our staff. Tele-health continues to be available for those who have found it to be helpful, particularly for behavioral health services.

Throughout this ordeal, our wonderful donors have continued their generous support and many have volunteered their time to help in a variety of ways. We are so grateful to these selfless acts of giving.

Everyone Can Help “Save our Bees!”

It’s time for all of us to help the bees get back on the healthy road!

Planting safe “Bee Highways” in our neighborhoods and across America sounds like a ‘cute’ and ‘quaint’ idea until you realize that without bees, crops such as apples, avocados, grapes, cotton, almonds and many others soon may completely disappear. Last year beekeepers across America lost over 40% of their bee colonies, due to increased pollution, pesticides and urban development. Many crops and 75% of all flowering plants need the help of pollinators to survive.

Approximately 1/3 of all the food we eat is the direct result of honey bee pollination, without bees there would not be enough food!

Creating safe “Bee Highways” across the country and then around the world is critical. So let’s get started. Everyone can help us save the working bees! These highways of life for the bees can be created on rooftop gardens, in front lawns, in back yards, on balconies, public parks and along roadways. These should be grown organically without pesticides. I am encouraging everyone to squeeze a few flower containers or plant a row in your garden or devote an entire garden to the bees. Even a pot on the porch will help the “Bee Highway” grow.

Bees feast on summer flowers, such as bottle brush, Echinacea, snapdragons, roses, foxglove, honeysuckle, and other flowers. In the fall, they like zinnias, asters, winter bloom, goldenrod and hyacinth. An added bonus is that the butterflies and hummingbirds also will love to cruise these protected bee highways.

A bee has a 6-8 week lifespan and will fly the equivalent distance of one and a half times the circumference of the earth during it’s lifetime.

Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors and have a sense of smell 50 times more powerful than a dog.

All worker bees other than the drones are female and they do all of the work in the hive.

A single bee living it’s full life will produce only about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey!

During a single collection trip, a honey bee will visit anywhere from 50-100 flowers.

Honey bees beat their wings 200 times per second!

In order to make a pound of honey, a hive of bees fly approximately 55,000 miles!

Honey is the only food that contains all of the necessary nutrients to sustain life.

Honey has antibacterial properties and can be used as a dressing for a wound.

Bees have facial recognition and can recognize human faces!

A

N OLYMPIAN FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice, will lie in State in the United States Capital building on Friday, September 25th, 2020.

She is the first woman and Jewish person to receive this particular national distinction. The nation began three days of tributes in her honor on Wednesday, it was announced by Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.

“As an attorney, she led the fight to grant women equal rights under the law. As a judge, she did justice every day–working to ensure that this country’s legal system lives up to its ideals and extends its rights and protections to those once excluded. And in both roles, she held to – indeed, exceeded – the highest standards of legal craft. Her work was as careful as it was creative, as disciplined as it was visionary,” stated Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, upon the death of Bader Ginsburg.

The Supreme Court Justice died last Friday at age 87, from pancreatic cancer, after serving on the Supreme Court for 27 years. She was appointed to the court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.

“Her landmark opinions advancing gender equality, marriage equality, the rights of people with disabilities, the rights of immigrants, and so many more moved us closer to ‘a more perfect union,’” Clinton said. “Her powerful dissents,

especially her ringing defense of voting rights and other equal protection claims, reminded us that we walk away from our Constitution’s promise at our peril. And she did it all with kindness, grace, and calm, treating even her strongest adversaries with respect,” commented former President of the United States Bill Clinton.

Lying “in state” is a unique acknowledgement of an individual’s contributions to the entire country and reserved for esteemed and distinguished public figures. Only 35 persons have been afforded the honor to lie in state at the Capitol. Bader Ginsburg’s coffin will lie on the Lincoln Catafalque in National Statuary Hall of the Capitol building. Ginsburg will also be only the second Supreme Court Justice to lie in state at the Capitol, after William Howard Taft, who also served as President of the United States.

Four civilians have lay “in honor” in the nation’s Capitol. They were Rosa Parks, civil rights activist; the Rev. Billy Graham; and two U.S. Capitol police officers.

“Your memory and contributions to our country will live on for generations,” commented California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara. “Thank you RBG for all you have done for women, for justice, and for humanity.”

A private interment service is planned for next week at Arlington National Cemetery.

She will join her husband of 56 years, Martin Ginsburg, who was buried there in 2010.

Having joined Northern Trust in Santa Barbara in 2000, Chou holds over three decades of gaining capital markets, broad financial advisory, and corporate finance experience. LARRY DAM joins the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara Board of Trustees after his years working with Grupo Televisa. A Mexican-based entertainment conglomerate, Dam held multiple executive positions for Grupo Televisa in both Los Angeles and New York City. He has since retired to Santa Barbara, where he has been an active supporter of local nonprofits. His past positions include working on the Boards of Directors for Montecito Retirement Association and Direct Relief. Dam still works as a mediator and consultant in addition to his volunteer efforts.

Westmont College and SB Symphony Partner On Music Education

T

HE SHOW MUST GO ON! This fall, students will be learning classical music through modern means thanks to Westmont College’s partnership with Santa Barbara Symphony. As the ongoing pandemic prevents many traditional music education methods, these local organizations are working tirelessly to provide modified learning opportunities to local students of all ages.

“This strategic partnership between the Santa Barbara Symphony and Westmont College is exciting news for our community,” said Santa Barbara Symphony Music and Arts Director Nir Kabaretti in the symphony’s statement announcing the partnership.

The principle organizers will be Kabaretti, Symphony Director of Music Education Kristine PachecoBernt, and Westmont Adams Professor of Music and Worship Michael Shasberger. Curriculum and financial aid will be overseen by Shasberger, Westmont College Choir and Chamber Singers Conductor Daniel Gee, and Westmont Conducting Artist In Residence and Community Arts Liaison Yvette Devereaux. As a notable professional violinist and conductor, Devereaux will also contribute by conducting the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony.

Together, faculty and musicians from both organizations will work to provide virtual and sociallydistanced musical learning experiences. To date, the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Music Education Center (MEC) remains the only local program of its kind to have a working relationship with a professional symphony. Over the past months, the MEC has practiced virtual learning due to the pandemic in the form of weekly online sessions with the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Teaching Artists. Going forward, the Symphony’s partnership with Westmont will allow students to have even more opportunities to learn, perform, communicate with fellow students, and receive feedback from professional musicians — all through innovative, virtual platforms.

“Westmont College and the Santa Barbara Symphony have been great friends and collaborators for many years,” expressed Shasberger in the symphony’s announcement. “I am delighted at this time to see the fruit of those collaborations developing into a broader strategic partnership and shared purpose.”

Santa Barbara Symphony will also be going virtual for its 2020-2021 “Spotlight on Santa Barbara” season.

Designed by Kabaretti, this year’s season aims to celebrate our local musicians and artists, and will consist of seven broadcasted concerts. Each concert will be filmed live by multiple cameras, and feature interviews to offer viewers a comprehensive symphony experience from their homes. The season begins on October 17th with its “Cabaret with Kabaretti” performance.

“While the Marquee at the Granada Theatre had to go dark in March, the Symphony’s commitment to delivering on our promise to bring music to our community never dimmed,” said Santa Barbara Symphony’s interim CEO Kathryn Martin in her official message on the 2020-2021 season.

IGHTS, CAMERA, ROSEBUD! The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is now accepting applications from local college students for their annual Rosebud Program. Designed for students interested in learning more about the film industry, the Rosebud Program is a free opportunity for both film and non-film majors alike.

Twelve participants will be selected for this year’s program. These students will be given access to a series of sneak preview screenings through SBIFF’s Cinema Society, as well as virtual Q&A sessions with filmmakers. Past Q&A sessions have featured celebrities such as actor Adam Sandler, director Greta Gerwig, and Oscar-winning Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. The Rosebud Program also provides students with the chance to learn from SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling through virtual small-group and individual conversations. As Durling is also a Santa Barbara City College Film Studies Adjunct Professor, students will also have the opportunity to earn college credit through his SBCC Independent Study Course.

People’s Self Help Housing Names New President and CEO KENNETH TRIGUERIO has been promoted to the position of People’s Self Help Housing’s new President and Chief Executive Officer and will begin his new duties on October 5th. Triguerio currently acts as the organization’s Executive Vice-President, and has worked with PSHH since 2005. According to PSHH Board Chair Shelly Higginbotham, he was selected for this promotion based on his skills, empathy, dedication to PSHH’s mission, and his coworkers’ respect.

Each face mask will feature an autograph from a Hall of Fame athlete or famous celebrity. “The annual National Drive Electric Week event continues to help raise awareness about electric vehicles so our region can help meet California’s goal for five million zero-emission vehicles on state roads by 2030 and fulfill Governor Newsom’s

recent executive order to have only zero-emission new car sales by 2035,” Chiacos stated, noting that transitioning to more efficient electric vehicles and using renewable energy to charge these vehicles are central components of CEC’s plan to move the Central Coast region away from fossil fuels in one generation. Speaking to the fact that transporting people is the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in our region, he added, “Driving electric and driving less are the single largest things most individuals can do to reduce their environmental impact and kick the gasoline habit.”

“Beyond our National Drive Electric Week efforts, CEC is preparing to launch bilingual outreach and education with Santa Cruz-based Ecology Action to help underserved communities learn about and access cleaner electric vehicle options across California’s Central Coast,” said CEC’s Executive Director Sigrid Wright. She went on to explain that this is part of a long-term effort to advance electric vehicle investments and policy actions that will help make electric vehicle options truly accessible for our region’s low-income families, communities of color, rural households, immigrants, and indigenous groups.

Virtual Santa Barbara Housing Conference The 6th Annual Santa Barbara Housing Conference, originally scheduled to take place in May, had to be postponed and reimagined due to the pandemic. Watching Over the Whales

Online tool allows users to detect whales and ships in the Santa Barbara Channel in near real-time N ONLINE TOOL TO DETECT AND BETTER PROTECT — in near real-time — whales inhabiting the Santa Barbara Channel is now live. Whale Safe is the product of a collaboration among marine scientists with the Benioff Ocean Initiative at UC Santa Barbara and top whale researchers from across the country.

“We’re excited to finally launch it into the world,” said Morgan Visalli, a Benioff Ocean Initiative (BOI) scientist and Whale Safe project lead. The result of three years of work between BOI researchers and colleagues at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Texas A&M University at Galveston, the University of Washington, UC Santa Cruz, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Whale Safe is a mapping and analysis tool that displays near real-time data to help prevent ships and whales from colliding, an event that happens far too often off the West Coast.

“Unfortunately, 2018 and 2019 were the worst years on record for fatal whale-ship collisions off the coast of California,” Visalli said. “We hope that data from the Whale Safe system can help to reverse that trend.”

The high number of collisions is due to a confluence of several factors, she explained. For one thing, whales often feed, migrate, rest, mate, and socialize in coastal areas. Blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived, are currently found along our coast’s cold, krill-filled waters, which has been especially busy this summer. Aggregations of 30 blue whales were observed feeding in the Santa Barbara Channel in early August.

Unfortunately, the whales’ ancient migration paths overlap with some of the busiest shipping routes in the world, with cargo ships moving through the Santa Barbara Channel to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Marine shipping is an important industry to California and to the world, transporting an estimated 90 percent of global goods.

The vessels are enormous — often the size of skyscrapers and more than ten times the length of an adult blue whale. They tower so high above the surface of the ocean that whale spouts are difficult for ship captains to detect, let alone slow down for or avoid. Researchers estimate that more than 80 endangered blue, humpback, and fin whales are killed by vessel collisions every year off the West Coast alone.

To help protect the endangered animals, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and partners have, since 2007, implemented voluntary speed reduction programs to slow ships down as they crowd into the channel with the whales. The program has a voluntary ten knot (11.5 mph) speed limit for all large ships transiting through the important whale habitat in and around the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Research has shown that speed limits, when followed, appear to reduce the number of fatal collisions by 80 to 90 percent in some cases.

But while a slowly growing number of global shipping companies are participating in the voluntary program, more than half of ship transits in the Channel in 2019 still exceeded the requested ten knot slow zone. It’s an Morgan Visalli amount the researchers hope will decrease as the Whale Safe monitoring system alerts users to the presence of whales in the area.

“One of our goals is to provide real-time whale presence data that will help ships know when to slow down,” Visalli said. “In 2019, only 44 percent of the shipping industry followed the voluntary speed limit — we’d like to see that get closer to 100 percent.”

To help ships “see” the whales, the minds behind the Whale Safe tool brought together several technologies: an underwater acoustic system that automatically detects whale calls; near real-time forecasts of whale feeding grounds based on dynamic oceanographic data; and a mobile app used by community scientists to record whale sightings.

Developed and deployed by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Douglas McCauley scientists and engineers and monitored by Texas A&M Galveston scientists, the acoustic system consists of a hydrophone (underwater microphone) dropped into the Santa Barbara Channel that detects sounds in the water and processes them using an AI-powered computer providing identification of blue, humpback, and fin whales in near real-time. The whale detections are then sent via satellite transmitter on the system’s surface buoy to scientists in Galveston for review and confirmation.

“I have spent decades recording blues and other baleen whales at different locations. In the past, we always had to go back and retrieve our instruments and data from the ocean floor to learn when the whales were present at our location, months or years earlier,” said Ana Širović, an associate professor at Texas A&M Galveston who is leading the analysis of acoustic buoy data. “It is really exciting to know that there are whales in the Channel now, within an hour or two of them making the vocalization.”

Meanwhile, real-time oceanographic data such as temperature and ocean currents are crunched by a model developed by researchers at the University of Washington, UC Santa Cruz, and NOAA to predict where and when blue whales are likely to be present within the area, producing information much like daily weather forecasts.

it is raining and I check the weather forecast to see whether it is likely to rain,” said NOAA Research Ecologist and UCSC Adjunct Professor Elliott Hazen. “Our whale models can help mariners plan and make decisions as they approach our coast — today is cloudy with a chance of blue whales.”

“We’re harnessing the best and most current data to understand what habitats whales use in the ocean, and therefore where whales are most likely to be as their habitats shift on a daily basis,” said Briana Abrahms, an assistant professor at University of Washington who led the whale modeling effort. “The goal is to put this technology into the hands of managers, mariners, and the public to help protect these animals from ship strikes and other human threats.”

Finally, community scientists aboard local whale watching and tourism boats add whale observations using the Whale Alert and Spotter Pro mobile apps. A program jointly run by NOAA’s Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary and Channel Islands National Park, the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps has collected and maintained one of the largest and longest-running datasets of marine mammal observations in Southern California.

Together, these layers of information are combined into a daily Whale Presence Rating on the Whale Safe website — an indicator that describes the likelihood of whales from ‘low’ to ‘very high,’ much like a whale version of the Smokey the Bear fire danger rating.

“It provides a streamlined daily assessment of whale activity in the Channel,” Visalli said. “No one wants to hit a whale. No one wants to see coastal commerce interrupted. We hope that the data delivered by the new technology will provide ship captains with the information they need to protect whales while ensuring efficient maritime commerce.”

The tool tracks ships, too.

“Whale Safe also incorporates automatic identification system data, which is like GPS tracking data, but for ships,” Visalli added. Originally intended for ship collision avoidance and safety, the data can be picked up by boats as well as by transceivers on land or in satellites, and used to identify ships in the Channel and gauge their speeds.

Whale Safe turns this information into “report cards” for the ships and their companies, rating their cooperation with voluntary speed limits in important whale habitat.

Whale Safe is one of several projects of the Benioff Ocean Initiative, an applied research center that endeavors to create replicable solutions to problems threatening ocean health. It was founded at UC Santa Barbara in 2016 with a $10M gift from Marc and Lynne Benioff.

“Some of the older blue whales have been swimming around out there since before the founding of UC Santa Barbara,” said Douglas McCauley, director of the Benioff Ocean Initiative and a professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology. “We are so thrilled today to put some cool new tech to work to make their ocean home a little safer.”

Success of Whale Safe will help create multiple benefits beyond saving endangered whales. When cargo ships slow down, they typically emit less CO2, create less noise pollution, and release fewer NOx emissions which can cause cancer and affect lung health. In addition to their beauty, antiquity, and ecological importance, whales are also massive living carbon storage devices. The International Monetary Fund estimates that one whale saved is worth thousands of trees when pulling carbon out of the atmosphere.

“Since the Industrial Revolution, pollution from human innovation has too often degraded our planet,” Benioff said. “With Whale Safe, we’ll harness the latest technology to help save the planet and some of the oldest mammals.

This is a win, win, win — we save whales, fight climate change, and make our air healthier. The world owes a profound debt of gratitude to the incredible team of researchers who turned this vision into reality.”

ONORING BEAUTIFICATION EFFORTS FOR THE LAST 55 YEARS, Santa Barbara Beautiful is recognizing local individuals, businesses, and organizations in a reimagined way this year by presenting the “Golden Leaf Awards” rather than hosting their annual Awards Gala.

“We’re honored to celebrate our 55th Anniversary with Golden Leaf Awards – dedicated to the strength of our community and the individuals who have given joy to our city during these difficult times of COVID-19. Every year since 1965, SBB has celebrated the city’s beautification efforts with an Awards Gala in September, a gathering that recognizes people engaged in beautification and their publicly viewable projects. The Gala has seen many changes throughout the years, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SBB had to cancel their in-person celebration. They directed focus on those who have dealt directly with the local impacts of the pandemic.

Harbor VOICE For a Friend...

OW COULD I NOT KNOW of one of the most charitable marine based organizations in the City of Santa Barbara, the Friendship Paddle? So embarrassing to have to admit that I seem to have been wearing that perpetual mask over the wrong part of my face … my eyes!

Once informed, I learned that the noteworthy mission of the Friendship Paddle is to organize paddle events on the waters of the Channel for the purpose of providing emotional and financial support to Santa Barbara County residents of all ages fighting life-threatening illnesses. The Friendship Paddle was created in 2003 on behalf of Doug McFadden, a 39 year old father of two who had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. A large gathering of friends organized to show their love and support with a lunch in his honor. Several friends wanted to continue this… but what does one do for someone fighting desperately to experience the second half of his adult life?

Growing up in Santa Barbara, the ocean plays a big part of daily life: friends share joyful experiences on the ocean, and the waterfolk always turn to the ocean for soul searching, challenge, and escape. Why not gather a group of friends to paddle across the channel to raise funds for others like Doug and provide the financial and emotional support needed to battle a serious disease?

Since 2003, the Friendship Paddle has grown as more paddlers have joined and sponsorships have increased. The planning of each yearly event has taken on a life of it’s own as the paddle (and/or

celebration of life) became unique on behalf of its beneficiary.

This year’s event, like so many events in Santa Barbara, had to change due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.The traditional paddle from the Chanel Islands to the harbor area always included a BBQ and social gathering. As these gatherings had to be scrapped, the entire month of September was designated as a paddle for Peter Winn, the 2020 beneficiary. A paddler himself, who participated in twelve different Friendship Paddles in support of others experiencing life-threatening diseases, this was the year to return Peter’s love and rally around him, his wife Jan, and their daughter Ally. Winn was diagnosed in early 2020 with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer that impacts bone marrow, the immune system, and kidney function. On Sunday, September 20th a ‘Pop-up’ Paddle for Peter’ took place starting at Goleta Beach and ending at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club with 50 paddlers participating in Winn’s memory.

Yacht Club Staff Commodore Scott Deardorff, himself a long time paddler, supporter, and a close friend of Winn, noted sadly, “Unfortunately, we lost Peter in body, but not in spirit! I know he’s here bringing fun and joy to this occasion as always… he was a great friend that never let time fade our friendship.” Deardorff added proudly, “This year’s Friendship Paddle, along with personal, business, and corporate sponsorships raised $100,000 on behalf of the Winn family.”

Despite the fact that I’ve had the opportunity to become acquainted with the many charitable organizations in Santa Barbara, the caring and thoughtfulness of our community continues to astound me. Thank you Scott Deardorff for making me aware of the existence of this worthwhile organization and I encourage all of you to visit www.friendshippaddle.org and discover it for yourselves.

Enchantments A Book of Luminous Things Czesław Miłosz

T IS GOOD TO HAVE A BIG ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY that invites, engages, and elucidates without a forbidding tangle of erudition. It is significant that I have been gifted A Book of Luminous Things (1996) three times by three accomplished poets. Czesław Miłosz (1911-2004), one of the most important shapers of poetry, aesthetics, morality, and politics of the twentieth century, gathered his anthology of international poetry to further an ideal expressed in his Ars Poetica —

The purpose of poetry is to remind us how difficult it is to remain just one person, for our house is open, there are no keys in the doors, and invisible guests come in and out at will.

Lithuanian-Polish-American, Nobel Laureate for Literature 1980, Miłosz influenced the giants themselves—poets like W.S. Merwin, Charles Simic, Jane Hirshfield. Perhaps the longest poem Jane ever wrote is about him, her friend. Here’s a bit of her five part Letter to C.— You studied Shakyamuni’s teachings because he could also not turn his face from suffering, though for you liberation required a soul—singular, real, believing beyond any proof that it will last.

Your immutable, “Why?” remained, like Job’s, unanswered.

And still in the halls of silence it echoes again.

Miłosz thought about his Luminous Things over a lifetime that included 18 years teaching at UC Berkeley. Fierce fighter against the Nazis, Stalinists, protector and smuggler of Jews in Warsaw during WWII, he said of his anthology, “I would have nothing against it being called a book of enchantments.” And there are about 300 of them under engaging headings—Epiphany, Nature, The Secret of a Thing, Travel, Places, The Moment, People Among People, Woman’s Skin, Situations, Nonattachment, History.

He introduces each of the 120 poets with a brief bio and an uninhibited opinion which I find delightful. Of a Robert Creeley poem he writes, “Man confronting nature fears his foreignness and is ashamed of his intrusion. He would like to return to

the earthly paradise before Adam’s sin. This seems to be a very American dream and this poem pays tribute to that tradition.”— Like They Say Underneath the tree on some soft grass I sat, I watched two happy woodpeckers be disturbed by my presence. And why not, I thought to myself, why not.

Miłosz includes seven poems by one of my favorite French poets, Jean Follain, and finally seems to get a little impatient about this one translated by W.S. Merwin—“I have doubts about some of Follain’s poems. Since my ideal is simplicity, a work that pushes conciseness beyond a certain limit seems to me too literary, or too sophisticated, which are often equated. This poem expects the reader to guess that primitive cave dwellers are involved, for whom precious stones would have no value, and we don’t know why those stones are there, where hunters used to carve their game.”— Black Meat Around stones called precious which only their own dust can wear down the eaters of venison carve in silence their black meat the trees on the horizon imitate in outline a giant sentence.

Luminous Things includes many Chinese poems as Miłosz agrees their contributions to our modern literature beyond measure. I loved learning about Chang YangHao (1269-1329) who had been unknown to me—“Several centuries have passed since Wang Wei was writing his poems. We are now in a different period of Chinese history, and the reflection on time’s passing makes an integral part of this poem—a poem like the Bible’s vanity of vanities, with two magnificent concluding lines.”—

I look west & hesitant I lament here where opposing armies passed through.

Palaces of countless rulers now but dust.

Empires rise: people suffer.

Empires fall: people suffer.

And here he gives full attention to a poem by last month’s subject Ted Kooser—“The poem, on a little town in Minnesota, is a synthetic image or even a collage. There is no single observer.

First, we see the last car of a moving train, then we receive information about two lights in the darkness, one a bulb in the prison, the other a flashlight handled by an old woman going downstairs to the bathroom. And so altogether a province. The prison is an important building, an old house with cats belongs to a lone woman (the husband dead, children somewhere far away).

Simultaneous images—moments are recaptured.”— Late Lights In Minnesota At the end of a freight train rolling away, a hand swinging a lantern.

The only lights left behind in the town are a bulb burning cold in the jail, and high in one house, a five-battery flashlight pulling an old woman downstairs to the toilet among the red eyes of her cats.

Miłosz championed the work of his younger countryman Adam Zagajewski (1945—) and says of this charming poem— “What follows is probably the shortest poem on the twentiethcentury mania of visiting places, all over the earth, as tourists.”— Auto Mirror In the rear-view mirror suddenly I saw the bulk of the Beauvais Cathedral; great things dwell in small ones for a moment.

Community News United Boys and Girls Clubs of SB County Hosts Raffle Fundraiser

This fall, the UBGC will be raffling off a 1956 GMC Pickup Truck valued at $60,000 to replace its traditional Rally4Kids event. Raffle tickets are on sale now, and the drawing will be held via Facebook Live on November 12th.

“With the loss of traditional in person fundraisers this year, our team came up with some creative ways to support our kids,” said Laurie Leis, UBGC’s Executive VP of Advancement. “Every ticket sold gives you a chance to win a car while also giving a child a chance to succeed in their education. Together we can be a ray of light and send a message that we care.”

Traditionally, the Rally4Kids event is one of UBGC’s most important fundraisers. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, Rally4Kids and four other UBGC fundraising events have been cancelled this year. This makes this fall’s raffle all the more vital, with proceeds from ticket sales going toward providing scholarships for children in need to attend the four full-day Community Learning Centers in Santa Barbara County. At these centers, students will be provided with academic support, meals, and the chance to participate in fun activities.

“We believe that education and mentoring should not be contingent on the ability to pay, and our goal is to provide scholarships at each site, so every child has an opportunity to attend,” said Rally4Kids event co-chairs Monte and Maria Wilson.

UBGC’s goal is to raise scholarship funds for more than 100 students. Each raffle ticket is priced at $150, and sales will be capped at 1,000 tickets. If less than 600 tickets are sold, then UBGC plans to raffle off a cash prize, with 50 percent of sales going to UBGC and the other half going to the winning individual.

Environmental Defense Center Welcomes New Extern LENA FREIJ has joined the Environmental Defense Center’s team for the fall as a legal extern. In this role, she will support the Environmental Defense Center as Lena Freij they continue to advocate for local environmental issues by gathering research for its legal staff. Her current projects include researching oil transportation issues, and aiding staff on litigation issues with clean water in Santa Barbara County. Freij is in her second year at the University of California, Los Angeles Law School, and will be conducting her work remotely due to the ongoing pandemic.

Nail Services Allowed to Open Indoors with Modifications

OVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM HAS ANNOUNCED A CHANGE related to the Personal Services industry sector. The State of California guidelines have been modified to allow nail services to resume indoor operations and physician-ordered electrolysis to reopen with modifications. Piercing, tattoo, and non-medical electrolysis services are still prohibited from reopening at this time. The County Health Officer, Dr. Henning Ansorg, has issued Health Officer Order 2020-12.8, which took full effect on September 23, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Guidance for personal care services like nail salons, tattoo parlors, and body waxing create a safer environment for workers and patrons. Businesses must review the guidance, prepare a plan, and post the checklist for personal care services in their workplace.

The guidelines outline the State of California’s requirements that must be met before an establishment may reopen in conformance with local regulations. It is required that each business submit, or have an attestation form on file with the County of Santa Barbara before opening.

N EFFORTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY, the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® C.O.R.E. committee (Community OutReach & Events) has created an event “Dine and Donate” in hopes to offer support and awareness to the COVID-19 Joint Response Effort. Our vision is to support local businesses and at the same time raise funds for those who are being impacted most by COVID-19 in our local community.

Local restaurant Uncorked will be cooking up delightful entrees to choose from: Mushroom and Truffle Sachetti, Lobster Ravioli, and Ahi Nicoise salad. The $100 ticket includes choice of two entrees, soup or salad, dessert, and a local bottle of wine which can be selected at pickup.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 1st with curbside pickup available from 4 to 7pm. Diners will receive a face mask printed with the event logo “Support Local.”

The Santa Barbara Foundation (SBF), United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC), and the Hutton Parker Foundation are leading a countywide funders’ collaborative with members of the Foundation Roundtable.

URING THE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES OF COVID-19, when many events are being canceled or rescheduled, the SLOPOKE Art of the West Exhibition & Sale is getting back in the saddle to present its 10th annual show in a safe and socially distanced way on September 25th to 27th at Flag Is Up Farms, an open-air ranch in Solvang. This unique live art show celebrates the American West - its scenery, wildlife, ranch life, and history, and offers guests the opportunity to meet the artists.

SLOPOKE showcases excellence in painting and sculpture with the flavor of the American West. During the exhibiton, three sculptors, Errol Gordon, Dino Mehaffie, and Pat Roberts will unveil their most recent sculptures to the public. Each piece will be a new limited-edition bronze fresh from the foundries. Additional featured artists include 2020 Jurist and featured artist Jim Wodark, The Irish Cowboy by Lisa McLoughlin Janet Allinger, Liz Alvarez, Naomi Brown, Tom Burgher, Gloria Chadwick, Gail Faulkner, Alexi Fine, Melinda Gandy, Carolynne Hawley, Teresa Johnson, Diane Keltner, Simon Lok, Lisa McLoughlin, Tracy Miller, Melody Owes, Denise Rich, Janice Scultz, Phyllis Waltman, and Jody Wiggins.

Joan Rosenberg-Dent: Naked Porcelain… Splat on the Wall!

Re-imagining Virtual Exhibitions

H

OPING TO BRING AN ELEMENT OF ENRICHING, POSITIVE ENERGY into the lives of artists whose opportunity to exhibit their work in person has been severley limited (and to those who love their work), Joan Rosenberg-Dent has taken this moment to explore a new kind of gallery, offering the look and feel of an in-person show. Her latest exhibit, Naked Porcelain… Splat on the Wall! features what she has become admired for, a wide-ranging variety of abstract, conceptual, and translucent porcelain sculptures that viewers may find breathtaking. Teaming up with www.artavita.com, the exhibition is presented to feel similar to walking into a physical showroom. “I was thinking that because there are so many people, stuck in, unhappy, and frustrated, it would be a way to bring some other element into their lives... It would help. It would show artists that there are some options out there to share their work because, what are they doing now? They’re working constantly, because we have the time and there’s no distraction,” Rosenberg-Dent shared of her motivations.

When viewers enter Naked Porcelain…Splat on the Wall!, they will begin at the main entrance of a showroom, and travel through to see all of RosenbergDent’s pieces hung on walls like they would in an in-person show. Viewers can navigate through the aisles using left and right arrows, and click on an art piece to read more about it or (for the tech challenged) allow the exhibition to run automatically. Although the process of hanging artwork in a virtual exhibit had its challenges, Finding Beauty in the Wind,

by Joan Rosenberg-Dent according to the artist, the space flows beautifully and each of the pieces pop out from the walls, showcasing the form, movement, and rhythm that is characteristic of Rosenberg-Dent’s artwork.

“My inspiration behind this exhibit was looking at the world from a different point of view. You know, when you’re seeing a sculpture, it’s always somewhere close to your visual level. You walk around all the sides of the sculpture. I wanted a different viewpoint.”

Rosenberg-Dent’s pieces are made mostly in unglazed porcelain, which allows for translucency and whiteness, while the tension between the forms, line, color, and materials amplify. Viewers can see how the shadows around the pieces create depth and become part of the piece themselves. Les Fleurs in porcelain on wood panel with acrylic cover, showcases a beautifully detailed bouquet of abstract porcelain flowers. In Hugs & A Kiss, porcelain on wood panel, the elements are extended an inch from the panel, which allows shadows to be cast and the depth to be enhanced. Inner Peace, porcelain on wood panel is visually and conceptually based on the mantra.

“I kind of see myself as the choreographer and I see my pieces as the dancers. My pieces are arranged just like I would choreograph a dance, with a lot of attention to the space around, and how they relate.”

Rosenberg-Dent’s out-of-box thinking combined with her hands-on approach, creates masterpieces that are organic and exude palpable energy. The idea behind Naked Porcelain…Splat on the Wall! came from her reflection on other ways of being. “I started throwing my Rip Tide, by Joan Rosenberg-Dent clay on the wall and I thought, ‘oh my God,’ why don’t I do something on my wall!”

One section of her exhibit, Finding beauty in unprecedented times, is dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the pieces relate to the beach walks she has every day, where she finds peace and happiness and beauty. Finding Beauty in the Wind reflects this calming and peaceful nature, which she believes is so often overlooked. Celebration, porcelain, string on wood panel is about celebrating life in unprecedented times. These pieces remind us that while it’s easy to overlook beauty in the world, it still exists all around us.

“I am a maker. I love to make things. I am always creating, no matter what I have, sticks and stones or yarn and clay.”

With a main goal to share her work with others, Rosenberg-Dent hopes that Naked Porcelain…Splat on the Wall! will help other artists to think about creative ways to showcase their own art.

In the 18th century in Mexico, artists began painting images of couples of different ethnic backgrounds along with their racially-mixed children.

Typically, created in sets of 16, each picture showed a different type that was loosely codified in the sistema de castas, a hierarchy that categorized people based on racial mixture. This talk introduces casta paintings and discusses their formal and contextual characteristics, including the impetus for their creation and the significance of the works for those who commissioned and displayed them on both sides of the Atlantic.
