October 3rd’s unique evening with Philip Glass and Pico Iyer was created for this series only, and will bring together two unique and commanding cross-cultural interpreters for an intimate conversation about life, creativity, and the global soul.

Pico Iyer, long time friend of Arts and Lectures is the author of two novels and 13 works of non-fiction. His books have been translated into 23 languages.

He has also written the introductions to more than 60 other works, as well as liner notes for Leonard Cohen and a screenplay for Miramax. He is currently Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton. He is the author of three new books including Autumn Light (April, 2019) and A Beginner's Guide to Japan.

He recently gave three talks for TED in the space of three years, and they have received more than eight million views Pico Iyer so far.

Current Glass projects include the King Lear Overture, written for the New York Philharmonic to premiere in September 2019 and Glass' first Piano Sonata which will receive its New York premiere in November 2019. Glass continues to perform solo piano and chamber music evenings with world-renowned musicians, and regularly appears with The Philip Glass Ensemble.

Born in Baltimore, MD, Glass is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the Juilliard School.

In the early 1960s, he spent two years of intensive study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and, while there, earned money by transcribing Ravi Shankar's Indian music into Western notation.

By 1974, Glass had completed a number of innovative projects, creating a large collection of new music for The Philip Glass Ensemble and for the Mabou Mines Theater Company. This period culminated in Music in Twelve Parts and the landmark opera Einstein on the Beach, for which he collaborated with Robert Wilson. His scores have received Academy Award nominations (Kundun, The Hours, Notes on a Scandal) and a Golden Globe (The Truman Show).

NDLESS WAVES OF MUSICAL COLOR have flowed from renowned composer Philip Glass, an American treasure who will join author Pico Iyer in a conversation presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures on Thursday, October 3rd at 7:30pm at UCSB Campbell Hall, kicking off A&L's popular Speaking with Pico series.

"I was overwhelmed when Philip Glass agreed to continue his long-standing relationship with Arts & Lectures and open the Speaking with Pico series this coming season," recalled Iyer. "To talk not just about his music, which has opened a new dimension in many hearts and ears, but even more about his vision of transformation and his life on the front lines of artistic and spiritual exploration, as a friend and colleague of the Dalai Lama, Ravi Shankar, Martin Scorsese and so many others.”

A Promethean composer, Glass has had an unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times through an extraordinary body of work that has become part of a cultural soundtrack with a repertoire that includes music for opera, dance, theater, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and film.

Glass described his entrance into composing music. “The point was that the world of music—its language, beauty, and mystery— was already urging itself on me.

Jamie Broumas named Chief Artistic Officer of Music Academy of the West

IGNALING THE CONTINUING GROWTH AND ENRICHMENT OF AN IMPORTANT LOCAL INSTITUTION, JAMIE BROUMAS HAS BEEN APPOINTED to the newly created position of Chief Artistic Officer at The Musica Academy of the West. Now serving as Director of Classical and New Music Programs at Washington’s Kennedy Center, Broumas takes up the new post in January, when she looks forward to working with administration and faculty to further promote the Academy’s artistic vision. She will guide its training programs, foster a culture of consultation and collaboration, develop partnerships and community Jamie Broumas outreach initiatives, oversee the year-round program of innovative activities and events, and build new revenue streams and audience support. In addition, she will incorporate multidisciplinary events into the Academy’s programming and build relationships with contemporary composers to create new

commissions. She will also focus on mentoring Academy fellows to become change agents in their industry and communities.

"We are thrilled to have a highly experienced and creative leader joining our team,” related Music Academy of the West President and CEO Scott Reed. “Jamie Broumas will help strategize and direct the artistic vision that creates careerlaunching opportunities for our fellows and alumni. Her deep commitment to the arts will undoubtedly strengthen the training for our fellows and the public’s engagement with classical music."

As Director of Classical and New Music Programs at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Broumas has instigated a number of substantial and highly successful initiatives. These include “DIRECT CURRENT,” a two-week, multi-genre festival of contemporary culture; “SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras,” which represents a week-long spotlight on North American orchestras of all sizes; the Composer-In-Residence program, whose inaugural incumbent is Mason Bates; and “KC Jukebox,” an immersive new-music series that reimagines the classical concert experience. As the curator and producer of the Kennedy Center’s classical music programs, Broumas is also responsible for “Renée Fleming VOICES,” which celebrates the power of the human voice in a range of genres, and for the revered Fortas Chamber Music Concerts.

“I am very excited about the prospect of working in an

educational and training environment to help foster the careers and well-being of emerging musicians. I am also intrigued by the challenge of creating programs that serve Academy fellows, while providing opportunities for meaningful outreach to the Santa Barbara community and its creative ecosystem. The Academy is clearly a vibrant and forward-thinking organization,” shared Broumas.

Before joining the Kennedy Center administration in 1997, Broumas was an Orchestra Management Fellow at the League of American Orchestras, where she worked with ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, New Haven Symphony, and Houston Symphony. A passionate advocate for new music, over the course of her career she has commissioned and programmed many new works, always with an eye to engaging new audiences. She is also a gifted jazz vocalist who has performed throughout the U.S. as a soloist and a member of the Grammy-nominated Rare Silk vocal group. She holds a B.A. in Music from Vassar College.

Afterschool volunteer program for teens starts October 8th

HE SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN IS LOOKING FOR TEENS to participate in their X-Stream Science Team. The X-Stream Science Team is a teen volunteer program focused on providing handson experiences in natural history and field biology, and meets weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m.- 5:30 p.m., beginning October 8 at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, 1212 Mission Canyon Road, Santa Barbara, Calif., 93105.

Mounting evidence indicates that time spent in nature while growing up leads to the adoption of environmentally sound practices as an adult. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is the ideal outdoor classroom, a place for safe exploration of native plants and the myriad of organisms that rely on them. The Garden offers the perfect setting for teens to develop a deep connection with nature that will shape their environmental decisions as adults, and engages students in real-life science and stewardship.

“Many young people aren’t aware of the diverse career and volunteer opportunities available in environmental conservation,” said Scot Pipkin, the Garden’s Director of Education & Engagement. “The X-Stream Science Team provides meaningful environmental science experiences and the tools to raise public awareness about some of our community’s biggest environmental issues.”

The X-Stream Science Team program is centered around the Mission Creek watershed and is focused on providing hands-on experiences in natural history and field biology in ways rarely available in high school. Teens are able to see, experience, and study California’s native plants and animals while learning about the vital role watersheds play in our environment. During the school year, teens will learn about native plant and watershed ecology while exploring multiple facets of environmental science, including: Field Biology & Community Science: Team members explore Mission Canyon in order to study, collect, and process plant species to create a comprehensive Flora of the area. Outside of the field season, students participate in monitoring and collection projects focused on studying Mission Creek.

Environmental Education: Team members build crucial communication skills by engaging with elementary students in offsite outreach events as well as by designing and facilitating a puzzle-based experience for Garden visitors.

Restoration: The team engages in restoration opportunities such as invasive plant removal, and creek and beach clean ups throughout the school year.

“This science has really given me so much knowledge and valuable experience I could not have gotten otherwise during high school and it has been a highlight and something I look forward to every week,” said Asher Thomson, past X-Stream Science Team member and Dos Pueblos High School class of 2019 graduate.

The X-Stream Science Team meets weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m.- 5:30 p.m., beginning October 8. Students are only required to attend one meeting a week.

Weekly meetings wrap up in May, however summer volunteer opportunities are available. This program is designed for students in grades nine-12. Eighth-graders may be accepted with teacher recommendation.

Harbor VOICE Airport Fun!

H

OW ABOUT A CHANGE OF TOPIC FOR THIS WEEK? Say, from a harbor to an airport … in this case, two airports! I’ll admit it’s not exactly the same, although they both harbor Main lobby of the Terminal vehicles of transportation, with similar navigation principles. Ok, I’m stretching it a tad, but it makes sense because I’m far away from a harbor and very near an airport – and the last 18 hours has afforded me two contrasting airport experiences.

Let me describe Terminal check in my experience at an airport, the one where my luggage and I just landed. It’s Munich International Airport, or MUC, named after former Hotel across from Terminal Bavarian MinisterPresident Franz Joseph Strauss, an often controversial figure who spearheaded the project in an attempt to attract air traffic and related industry to Bavaria.

This massive airfield encompasses almost 4,000 acres. Running into one another, either in the terminals or on the field, is next to impossible. Located 18 long country miles from Munich, the entire huge complex includes two main terminals plus additional midfield terminals to handle super heavy aircraft. There is public Main Terminal & Airport Center transportation to the city, taxi and bus service, and ample parking.

The entire airport is surrounded by a large green zone to isolate it from the neighboring villages.

Passengers arrive at the front entrances with minimum traffic. Once in the building, the high ceilings and the feeling of open space is in itself a stress deterrent. The appearance of a crowd is gone, and the placement of security lines makes the process faster and minimally invasive. Comfortable seating is everywhere; an observation platform, stores, supermarkets, and restaurants to suit every conceivable taste can be found. The terminals are joined by an Airport Center, a huge space to accommodate events such as the German Christmas market and Oktoberfest. Last year I viewed the World Cup football finals on a giant screen set up with bleachers.

A hotel is located directly across from the international terminal, a one minute walk. I am writing to you from there, feet up, waiting for room service.

Let’s end with our ‘local’ international aviation hub, the Los Angeles International Airport, affectionately (sic) called LAX. The ‘X’, in this case, being the operative word because the traffic alone guarantees that your seat will be ‘X’ed out (purchased by a stand-by before your arrival at the designated gate). But wait, there’s more.

Finding the proper terminal isn’t possible with all the expansion projects and construction underway, allegedly for greater passenger ease. The terminal numbers are hidden under an overhang, so without an airport map to guide you, it’s a treasure hunt from start to finish. Of course, that might actually not be a problem: the cars making their way around the airport aren’t moving. It’s Autopia at Disneyland here!

If, by some miracle, you actually make it to the interior thoroughfare, unloading luggage must be swift, because within three seconds a Gendarme appears out of Oktoberfest... nowhere informing you that your stay is against the law (even though the curb as far as the eye can see is parked – or double parked – with passengers unloading their luggage). The check-in...well, if you bring your lawn chair, that’s not a problem either. You’ll need the rest before going through security.

And then there’s your favorite team of Security Professionals to greet you … and your shoes, your jewelry, your belt, your computer, your cell phone, and other electronic devices, and they can elect to go through your luggage. If, in fact, you needed hydration as stress relief, they’ll remove those perky water bottles forcing you to re-purchase water again at an elevated price inside the security area. You might even be granted a personal patdown after you’ve been radiated in the scary scanner. Chances are by the time you reach the gate, you can watch your plane being towed to the taxiway with someone else sitting in your seat. If you actually do make it to your seat, any turbulence during the flight will be a walk in the park compared to the gnarly trip getting to the gate.

But really, think of it as just another hum-drum day at LAX! So … you’re not feeling all that sorry for me, right? Me neither. That LAX experience is distant and I’m now enjoying the Fall weather and the ambiance here in the Old Country. Munich’s upcoming Oktoberfest is my clue to depart. And, as Dorothy so aptly said to her Auntie Em, “There’s no place like home!”

A Fantastique Week of French Cinema - The 2019 COLCOA French Film Festival

HE NEWLY REMODELED DIRECTOR’S GUILD THEATRE IN WEST HOLLYWOOD set the scene for a six-day and night experience of French feature films, documentaries, television series, and short films, the COLCOA Film Festival, September 23rd through 28th. The theatres, nicknamed Renoir, Melville, and Truffaut theatres for the week’s screenings, provided a tribute to legacy French filmmakers. The remodeled theatres all have new state of the art Dolby sound and projection systems, further enhancing the wealth of screenings. This year’s festival was presented by the Franco-American Cultural Fund along with other sponsors including the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America West, and exclusively features works from French production teams. This event goes beyond the annual Cannes Film Festival, as it includes more Francobased entertainment material than anywhere around the globe.

Kickstarted in 1997, COLCOA stands for “City of Light, City of Angels” signifying an imperative French cultural event that has been steadily growing for 23 years, helping to create a ‘buzz’ for French titles that struggle to find a foothold in traditional movie theatres. Many of the represented films won awards at last May’s Cannes Film Festival or were launched at the recent Venice Film Festival with many North American COLCOA Director and/or USA premieres. The films shown embrace character-driven stories, Costa Garvas providing a focus on the often moment-by-moment struggles that have universal resonance. This champagne-filled, sparkling week-long cinematic excursion provides a celebratory salute to the unique qualities of French storytelling.

Some of the highlights included the opening night film, Les Misérables, a new and original version, directed and co-written by Ladj Ly, which won the Palme d’Or Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was also recently selected as the official French entry for the Academy Award. Ladj Ly refreshes this oft-told story, setting it in a single day’s time, deep within the urban jungle of the teeming housing projects found in the Montfereil district. Situated on the outskirts of Paris, and beset by poverty, the film includes violent depictions of hard-hitting street life in the ignored, lawless, and abandoned Film still from Bruno Collect’s animated short neighborhood. This film feels grittily explosive Memorable and is an illustration of modern-day mayhem as well as being a plea for better conditions.

The festival also presented the North American premiere of 86-year-old Costa-Garvas’ film Adults in the Room. This longstanding and revered lion of cinema made a surprise appearance at the festival to introduce the story based on the political intrigues of the Greek debt crisis as nefarious financial figures grappled with the financial rescue schemes set into motion by the fallout of the great recession of 2008-2009.

Energetic and gripping, although drawn out a little long, the film relies on a nuanced and humorous performance by actor Christos Loulis as the real-life Greek Chief Economic Minister Yanis Varoufakis and a richly Film still from Adults In The Room sinister portrayal from Ulrich Tukur as the German financial figure Wolfgang Schäuble. Illustrating back-room political deal making, Costa-Garvas’ film allows the audience to see what lurks behind the curtain of modern economic politics, an interesting lesson on the often unseen and inflexible forces that shape living conditions in Western Europe.

The new film written and directed by the Dardenne brothers filmmaking duo, Young Ahmed, was featured at Cannes and included an award-winning performance from young actor Idir Ben Addi as a teenager engaging in violence and radicalized by a Muslim extremist cleric. The film simply and adeptly explores the perils of religious extremism and portrays issues of contemporary challenges not easily solved that lead to tragic results.

Another narrative title screened was On a Magical Night, featuring a rich and award-winning performance from Chiara Mastroianni and written and directed by Christophe Honoré. Other intriguing films included The Trouble With You, Real Love, In Safe Hands, and The Freshman, which screened throughout the week.

A curated selection of Shorts screened before each feature. Some of the highlights included the darkly ironic results of a casual affair in Anaïs Tellenne’s Modern Jazz. Another expertly-made short was Bruno Collet’s Memorable that included delightful stop-motion animation techniques. This story provided a heartbreaking tale focusing on age and infirmity between a long-standing yet loving couple, fascinating in every frame. Another cornerstone of the programming was a look back on gems of the past, including a magnificently restored black and white print of director Jacques Becker’s groundbreaking Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (Don’t Touch the Loot) from 1954 featuring an elegant lead

performance from earlier era stars Jean Gabin and an extremely young and vivacious Jeanne Moreau. This film provided a blueprint for French Film Noir masterworks such as JeanPierre Melville’s Bob le Flambeur and Louis Malles’ Elevator to the Gallows.

Other classics shown during the week included Jean Renoir’s Toni from 1934, and one of the legendary and recently passed Agnès Varda’s best known works, Cleo From 5 to 7, a tribute to her Film still from Young Ahmed trailblazing filmmaking legacy.

The festival also included seminars that provide first-hand information on foreign film marketing and distribution. One of these, Film Festivals in the Digital Era, included eye-opening information from mover and shaker panelists on how film festivals, which have proliferated in the last two decades, play a role in creating energy around foreign titles and provide a launchpad for emerging directors and actors. As mentioned by the panelists, streaming services for television are having a major impact on distribution avenues and audiences reached. Television can no longer be ignored as traditional art houses close one by one in metropolitan areas.

The Festival’s Critic’s Awards, announced by the end of the week, will be culled from these impressive productions. ’VE NEVER GIVEN MUCH THOUGHT TO QUILTS. I’ve had friends who told me, “I’m making a quilt,” and I thought, “That’s nice.” Quilts do show up constantly in the small town auctions I follow to find items to use in the necklaces I make. I actually have one or two colorful quilts that have been gifts in the past.

Then I was surprised a couple of years ago when my close friend Susie Mitchell and her daughter Ayers said they were making quilts. To me that meant stitching together squares of colored fabric. It didn’t seem like something they would be doing.

Susie has referred to working on her quilt from time to time, but recently I started to become intrigued. She was working on a very special quilt.

Susie had decided to make a quilt with pieces of all the monogrammed linens they had in their home, both from her family and from her husband Johnny’s family.

This is the house on the property where the sister of the late Shah of Iran lived her last years. I was prepared to find a lot of things, knowing that Lolita never bought just one of something she liked. If she bought a pair of shoes, she bought every other shoe like it in every size and every color. But I still wasn’t prepared for what we found in that bunker-like basement! I was intrigued with the bundles of brand new white kid gloves made by nuns in Italy for Lolita. There were twelve pairs in each group, tied with a pink moiré ribbon. There were endless piles of twelve. When Lolita made the traditional weekly calls on friends, she was handed a fresh pair of white kid gloves at each house. They were handed to her by the footman sitting up next to the driver in front of the car’s glove compartment. Yes, that’s where the name came from!

There was so much to cope with that Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co., as Sothebys’ was called then, did a two day auction on the property – June 26th and 27th, 1976.

The catalog for the sale was gigantic. Decorators and collectors came from all over the world. Aside from the major two day auction, in another huge area there were items priced for sale not considered worthy of being in the main auction. What treasures we found there! I zeroed in on the linens, all beautifully monogrammed by cloistered nuns in Europe who were master embroiderers. To this day I sleep on fine Irish linen sheets with ALM in monogram form embroidered on them. And for formal dinner parties, my huge damask napkins are monogrammed the same. But these were only leftovers!

Susie Mitchell at work Susie Mitchell inherited a monumental array of monogrammed linens when she married Johnny 40 years ago, and she already had a huge collection from her own Eastern family with their monograms. She was drowning in magnificent linens in an era when we use place mats and paper napkins more often than anything formal.

Now to my point – Susie’s quilts. With no qualms whatsoever, she decided to bring all those antique treasures out into the world in a new life. A quilt. She cut right into the item that held the initials Susie Mitchell she wanted and added it to the quilt. Her own family for many generations are sewn in there. And of course Lolita is all over the quilt. Some of the patches she chose are done on soft pastels. The quilt is a masterpiece. Susie wisely topped it with a section that a pole could go through and it could be hung. This definitely wasn’t a quilt you want to be cuddled under while you changed the nail polish on your finger nails! Susie Mitchell’s new quilt is a great work of art.

Beverley Jackson moved to SB in 1963 from Los Angeles. She wrote a social column for the SB News-Press from 1968-1992. She also wrote the award winning book Splendid Slippers on Chinese footbinding and five other books on China. She latest book is Dolls of Spain. Jackson is avid doll collector and a collector of interesting people. She is also now seriously making and exhibiting pine needle baskets and collage.

A Common Table in The Middle of State Street

HE TABLE WILL BE ALMOST A BLOCK LONG, where locals and friends will sit down to eat and talk. This common table will be on the 500 block of State Street this Saturday, Sept.

28th, from 5 to 9pm.

This will be a free event where people are encouraged to bring their own food or buy from the restaurants in the downtown area to share.

This event is presented by The Lois and Walter Capps Project and other supporters.

A series of neighborhood gatherings around a long table, usually in the middle of the street, provides the opportunity for conversations, inclusive of all ages, about Santa Barbara have been held in several areas of the city.

A Common Table brings people of diverse backgrounds together around food and conversation. Individuals from all corners of the community come together around the commonality of art and creativity for this event. Each event is unique and features an unexpected diversity of visual artists, musicians, poets, dancers, and storytellers, who are otherwise unlikely to share a meal together.

Senior Expo of SB Features Health Screenings, Activities, Exhibits for Seniors and Caregivers

ENIOR EXPO IS BACK and even bigger this year! Seniors and caregivers will find a plethora of information about products and services to stay healthy and active at the Senior Expo of Santa Barbara, on Wednesday, October 2nd from 9am to noon at Earl Warren Showgrounds.

In its 31st year, the Senior Expo expects to draw over 1,000 seniors, family members, and caregivers seeking a convenient and fun way to discover the abundant resources for seniors in our community. A $5 admission fee provides access to multiple health assessments, such as blood pressure checks, hearing screenings, and bone density scans. Over 110 exhibitors will offer information from new fitness programs to financial services, as well as tips for those who need assistance getting around safely and affordably. Those 55 and older can also receive a free flu shot donated by Cottage Health. Other popular features of the Expo include onsite voter registration and a Caregiver’s Café, offering counseling and support for those caring for elderly friends and family members.

Senior Expo is organized by Family Service Agency and made possible through sponsorship of local businesses and nonprofit agencies. RIDAY GRETCHEN APPEARED IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO—“Pretty as a Maserati, a wild streak, wicked humor, our Warhol Girl, our find”—sayeth poet Enid Osborn in her introduction to Unkindnesses. It is unusual for a first collection of poems to be introduced by a Poet Laureate Emeritus but Enid is one of the consulting editors at Old Hat Press and was clearly and utterly captured by Friday at first encounter— “Her poetry was precocious, her mic presence remarkably selfassured, cheeky. She said a raunchy thing and looked you in the eye daring you to flinch.” Friday was a young druid with corvid voodoo painted on her mind now deepened by time—

This Droop, That Sag At forty-five I began to recognize that gravity, like evolution, is not only a theory— it is evident, measurable Today, this invisible force owns my body, pulling it steadily down Friday Gretchen toward the center of earth Today, my body will not drift into the atmosphere to twirl with birds, inhale clouds When on foot I avoid road work Become twitchy near cones & excavators Hyperventilate at hard hats am astounded by sinkholes I take time now to thank sidewalks cracked, bumpy, broken And thick bridges slung over crevices of shadow which would swallow me— straight down to that heated core that impatiently awaits my supple folds One of the oldest runes for wisdom, from ancient Sumer, is an ear listening to the ground meaning, “an ear to the Great Below.”

Our druid princess may become our queen. Friday writes, “Even as a youngster I loved the truth, I loved Wonder Woman. I needed a golden lasso of my own, since it seemed others did not value truth or justice in the same way we did. My interest in poetry developed with my second busted heart. I wrote my first adolescent poem about razor blades and suicide. I learned that writing down my painful truths also gave me the power to edit the story, make myself a happy ending. I signed up for a creative writing class in college that used Natalie Goldberg’s books as texts. This added fuel to my TRUTH fire.

I became aware of the word catharsis and identified writing as a great way to get to the other side of difficulty. I would never be considered an academic. I never read a lot of poetry by others. I had a stubborn fear of being influenced to the point of sounding like someone other than myself, which felt entirely dishonest. My writing, therefore, developed in a vacuum. Free-writing and timed writings became my practice and audience responses when sharing my work out loud fed my desire to continue.”

Friday Gretchen is the finest reader of her own poems I have ever encountered—period. Thankfully, she manages this seductive power with some wisdom for she can eviscerate, make love to you, curse, bless—you might not precisely know for a while.

In his introduction to Anne Carson’s Glass, Irony & God (1995), Guy Davenport writes, “the god Eros and his mother Aphrodite are outlaws again, a new puritanism descends, but there are still poets who allow Eros his dominion and can tell us that while prophets sleep, the asters in the garden unload their red thunder into the dark.”

Q2 GDP Growth Unchanged

I

N THE FACE OF DECLINING CONSUMER CONFIDENCE, but strong consumer and government spending, the third estimate of second quarter GDP growth was unchanged at two percent.

The BEA reported the increase in real GDP in the second quarter reflected positive contributions from personal consumption expenditures (PCE), federal government spending, and state and local government spending that were partly offset by negative contributions from private inventory investment, exports, nonresidential fixed investment, and residential fixed investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.

Consumer spending is increasing at 4.6 percent, while government spending that combines federal, state, and local outlays is 4.8 percent higher.

Inflation is basically flat for a variety

of reasons. The PCE price index increased 2.3 percent, compared with an increase of 0.4 percent in the first quarter. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 1.8 percent, compared with an increase of 1.1 percent.

The ‘other shoe’ to drop was the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index falling to a threemonth low of 125.1 this month from 134.2 in August.

“Consumer confidence declined in September, following a moderate decrease in August,” said Lynn Franco, Senior Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board.

“Consumers were less positive in their assessment of current conditions and their expectations regarding the short-term outlook also weakened.

The escalation in trade and tariff tensions in late August appears to have rattled consumers. However, this pattern of uncertainty and volatility has persisted for much of the year and

it appears confidence is plateauing.

While confidence could continue hovering around current levels for months to come, at some point this continued uncertainty will begin to diminish consumers’ confidence in the expansion.”

That and other indicators show slowing growth—for instance, consumers are saving more of their incomes. This is one factor holding down inflation that was discussed in earlier columns. Seniors are saving more due to extraordinarily low interest rates on which their fixed incomes depend, and perhaps more caution about future growth prospects.

Personal saving was $1.32 trillion in the second quarter, compared with $1.37 trillion in the first quarter.

The personal saving rate – personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income – was 8.1 percent in the second quarter, compared with 8.5 percent in the first quarter.

Wholesale inflation has fallen from its high in 2018 as the Trump tax cut stimulus has worn off, though the increase in the core rate of wholesale inflation over the past twelve months rose slightly to 1.9 percent in August from 1.7 percent. Economists prefer core inflation readings because food, gas, and trade margins can swing

I said last week that six in ten Americans now say a recession is likely in the next year and as many are concerned about higher prices because of the trade war with China, helping to knock six points off President Donald Trump’s job approval rating in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.

This is putting downward pressure on prices, as such fears reduce the demand for goods and services in general. Ratings of the U.S. economy overall, 56 percent positive, are down from 65 percent last fall in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates.

Most ominously, 60 percent see a recession as very or somewhat likely in the next year. That’s within sight of the 69 percent who said so in November 2007, one month before the onset of the Great Recession.

FTEN A SENSE OF MYSTERY FLOATS around important art groups... “Who is a member?” “How did they get to be one?”

“When did it all start?” Questions abound. The reputation of some of these groups goes before knowledge about them - both nationally and in California. Santa Barbara residents and visitors will have the opportunity to be reintroduced to one of the big ones, The Plein Air Painters of America, at an exhibition titled Celebrating Nature at Waterhouse Gallery.

The group was established in 1986 on Catalina Island by Denise Burns and a small group of painters who were committed to High Sierra Stones, 20 x 24 Oil, by Mitch Baird painting outside from life.

For their first two decades the group hosted annual paint-outs followed by an exhibition in Avalon, a unique format for the time that has grown in popularity.

Members and others used those times to expand their knowledge via sharing experience and workshops, in addition to exhibitions.

According to their website, “Members of PAPA believe that ‘plein air’ is nothing more than painting from life, utilizing direct observation to gather information, along with responding visually and emotionally to the subject at hand.”

In 2007, PAPA expanded its format to include exhibitions in museums and art centers to emphasize the Dockside Blues, 20 x 24 Oil, by John Cosby importance of field studies in the process of making studio paintings. Most of PAPA exhibitions are documented in catalogues.

The Waterhouse exhibition opens September 28th with a reception from 4 to 7pm and will include more than 34 artists from around the country.

J. R. Davidson, A European Contribution to California Modernism

Artists Reception

J.R. Davidson (b. Germany, 1889-1977), architect of the Thomas Mann House (1941), and three prototypes for the Case Study House Program (1946-48), contributed his European background, and specifically his training in interior design, to the advancement of modernism in Southern California. Throughout his five decades long career, Davidson produced an architecture highly functional in its plan, yet sensitive to its natural surroundings in its elevations. This exhibition, organized with materials from the architect’s archive at the Architecture and Design Collection of the AD&A Museum, fills this gap by highlighting those aspects of Davidson’s trajectory that were unique to his way of understanding architecture and its practice.

J.R. Davidson is curated by architectural historian Lilian Pfaff, who is also the author of the illustrated catalog accompanying the presentation.

Bêka & Lemoine – Living Architectures

How do buildings designed by famous architects shape their users’ life? What is it like to inhabit Rem Koolhaas’ Maison à Bordeaux (France) or to work at Renzo Piano’s Beyeler Foundation in Riehen (Switzerland)?

The output of world-acclaimed filmmakers Ila Bêka (b. Italy, 1967) and Louise Lemoine (b. France, 1981) explores the relationship A Garden Design by Isabelle Greene between people and design by portraying daily life at some of the most iconic buildings of the recent past. During the Fall quarter of 2019, the AD&A Museum will screen a different film by Bêka & Lemoine every week. The first screening takes place Sept. 27th with: Koolhaas Houselife.

The Art and Landscape Architecture of Isabelle Greene

Landscape architect and artist Isabelle Greene (b. United States, 1934) studied as a botanist, became a botanical illustrator, and then undertook art studies at UC Santa Barbara. Inadvertently, she also began dealing with landscape, through her desire to bring to people her love of the natural landscape. Her first commission in 1964 quite naturally utilized native plants and other sustainable features. It was her deep curiosity about the well-working of natural systems and the beauty of the western geography that propelled her forward. Constantly innovating to meet challenges, her successful experiments became known worldwide and she was hailed one of the originators of modern landscape design. This exhibition captures some of Greene’s outlook through her artistic works on paper.

THURSDAY is an evening of art and culture in downtown Santa Barbara that takes place on the first Thursday of each month. Participating art venues offer free access to art in a fun and social environment from 5-8pm. 1st Thursday venues also provide additional attractions, such as live music, artist receptions, lectures, wine tastings, and hands-on activities. Additionally, State Street comes alive on 1st Thursday with performances and interactive activities.

4 State Street Public Art Pads - Tiny

Libraries on State: Corner of State and Victoria Streets • Eighteen poets will read “Short Poems for Tiny Libraries.”

Reading begins at 5:30pm at the Question Mark and will stop at each tiny library for 10-minute readings. Artist Simon Kiefer with his pop-up vintage typewriters will make “haiku buttons.”

These brightly-colored sculptures double as free lending libraries for the community.
