The Beloved Bear Program was started in 2009 and provides comfort to adults and children grieving the loss of a family member or friend. Using a favorite article of clothing belonging to the loved one, Hospice of Santa Barbara volunteers handcraft an adorable stuffed bear or pillow to provide a tangible memory to be cherished.

A small heart is lovingly sewn inside each bear. The Beloved Bear Program has created over 300 bears for our community.

Medical Award: Van Do-Reynoso, MPH, PhD In response to the pandemic, Mi Vida, Mi Voz (MVMV) pivoted quickly to meet the need for timely, trusted information in Spanish, collating community resources in five basic categories – Health, Basic Needs (food, financial support, housing, legal), Mental Health, Children & Families, and Seniors – and sharing them in both Spanish and English to a network of trusted partners. Since then, MVMV has been able to establish ongoing partnerships with over 180 organizations, a network of over 550 community champions, and a reach of over 10,000 Latino families countywide.

Gary Simpson is the owner and president of the Home Improvement Center, where he has helped provide critical support to many beloved local charities, including Hospice of Santa Barbara. Gary is a long-time supporter and champion of Hospice of Santa Barbara as is his partner, Jill Nida.

Gary and his mother, Eleanor Simpson, both provided for Hospice of Santa Barbara in their estate plans and are members of Hospice of Santa Barbara’s Legacy Society.

UCKED AWAY IN ONE OF DOWNTOWN SANTA BARBARA’S QUAINT VICTORIAN HOUSES, a world of treasures awaits. Featuring antiques and vintage items across cultures and time periods, The Vintage Fox’s new Chapala Street location beckons passerby inside with its inviting, homey atmosphere.

Inside, visitors explore not only rooms of meticulously curated displays, but also an outdoor local art gallery.

“I hope that it’s going to offer a great meeting space for all different kinds of groups,” shared owner Ashley Fox. “I hope that people are inspired to find beauty there and make beautiful spaces in their own home after they’re here.”

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Fox moved to Santa Barbara in 1986. Upon arriving, she worked as a paralegal and with legal secretarial work until the birth of her children. An avid history fan and a “serial redecorator,” she grew inspired to share her passion with others by hosting “Driveway Designer Sales” out of her own driveway. As the sales grew, Fox and her friend Lauren Goss eventually decided to open their own store on De La Vina Street, called Fox and Goss Antiques. Three years later, Fox renamed the store The Vintage Fox after Lauren left the business.

Santa Barbara home. Built in 1904, the house was a local antique store for over 30 years. Charmed by the house’s front porch and history, Fox immediately knew it was the perfect location for her business.

“I think it’s really special that it’s gone full circle and it’s come back to an antique store,” said Fox. Upon entering The Vintage Fox, customers are greeted with a seasonal living room area, filled with vintage and antique furniture, art, and decor. From there, every room of the house focuses on a different theme, including rooms highlighting Asian items, French pieces, old California culture, rustic farmhouse items, and even the English Cup. Fox personally selects each of the items, discovering them by hosting estate sales, visiting flea markets, selling consignment pieces, and buying directly from store visitors. Due to her appreciation for a wide range of styles, The Vintage Fox offers a charmingly eclectic mix of home furnishings, decor, dinnerware, jewelry, books, and more across a broad price range.

Further distinguishing The Vintage Fox is its back patio, which includes two sheds that act as outdoor art galleries. Currently, both sheds feature the works by local artist Lloyd Dallett, who uses the smaller shed as an ongoing gallery. Fox hopes to eventually highlight other local artists by hosting art shows and pop-up sales in the larger shed, as well as lease the patio space for events such as fundraisers or bridal showers.

For now, with the support of her children, husband, and mother, Fox is happy to offer both visitors and locals a place to find unique items to adorn their homes.

“There’s something really sustainable and green about keeping these antiques and not tearing down more forest and using more wood and more resources,” said Fox. “Not only are they built to last because they’re made out of heavy hardwoods, but also the quality back then of how they were all handmade — there’s nothing like it.”

Community News SBEE Garden Project Receives 2021 Golden Leaf Award

N A TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS AND POSITIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT, the Santa Barbara Ecological and Edible (SBEE) Garden Project has received a 2021 Golden Leaf Award from Santa Barbara Beautiful. A network of community gardens, the SBEE Garden Project promotes access to locally grown food, biodiversity, and supports connection between our community and natural ecosystems.

“The SBEE Garden Project is so grateful to have received a 2021 Golden Leaf Award from Santa Barbara Beautiful. Word and Life to Host Love is the Way Discussion Series

Cottage Health Urges Pregnant Women to Get Vaccinated

A

S EXPECTANT MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS FACE A HIGHER RISK of health complications if the mother has COVID-19 while pregnant, Cottage Health is encouraging women who may become or are currently pregnant to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“As more data becomes available, we’ve seen that the vaccine is safe during pregnancy and helps to protect both mother and baby from complications of COVID,” said Dr. David Fisk, Medical Director of Infection Control at Cottage Health and an infectious disease specialist at Sansum Clinic. “The risk for complications during pregnancy and childbirth increases dramatically when COVID is involved.

Research studies including thousands of pregnant women have demonstrated that individuals who contracted COVID-19 were 15 times more likely to die from COVID-19 in comparison to women who were not pregnant. Additionally, these women were 22 times more likely to experience premature delivery.

Beyond the mother’s health, it has been shown that women who breastfeed after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine could help protect their child from the virus.

“Recent studies show that the breast milk of lactating mothers vaccinated against COVID-19 contain antibodies that may help protect nursing infants from the COVID-19 illness,” said Dr. Steven Barkley, Chief Pediatric Medical Officer at Cottage Children’s Medical Center. United Way Partners with Housing Authority for United Learning Center – GRAD Academy

N A MEANINGFUL STEP TOWARD SUPPORTING LOCAL STUDENTS, United Way of Santa Barbara County has partnered with the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara to establish the United Learning Center – GRAD Academy. Due to launch on September 7th, this program will transition students who attended the Housing Authority’s GRAD Academy after school program to United Way’s United Learning Center programming.

“During this time, it is extremely important that students have additional educational support to prevent even greater learning loss as a result of the pandemic,” said Steve Ortiz, CEO of UWSBC. “We are honored to partner with the HACSB’s GRAD Academy and we look forward to seeing successful outcomes for years to come.”

The Housing Authority’s GRAD (Growth, Readiness and Development) Academy served local students for almost 20 years before the COVID-19 pandemic began significantly impacting its services. Accordingly, the Housing Authority decided to partner with United Way and its successful United Learning Center to fully address students’ needs.

Through the United Way Learning Center, students experience small group tutoring in reading and writing as they work through personalized lesson plans.

On average, students that receive this tutoring during a 12 week cohort increase their literacy skills by two grade levels.

SB Reads Calls for Poetry Submissions

OETS OF ALL AGES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT THEIR ORIGINAL WORKS to the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Santa Barbara Reads 2021 Poetry Contest. This annual contest is part of the Santa Barbara Reads program, which invites community members to read the same book and discuss it. This year’s book is An American Sunrise by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Haro. Accordingly, contest entrants are asked to write a poem entitled “An American Sunrise,” inspired by Harjo’s titular poem.

“Poems need not reflect the direct subject matter of Harjo’s poem, but instead should answer the question, ‘If you wrote a poem entitled ‘An American Sunrise,’ what would it be?’” reads the SB Public Library’s announcement.

Poets can submit poems into one of the three possible age categories: children under 12, teens between 12-18, and adults aged 18 and older.

Submissions should be 30 lines or less, and must be submitted by 11:59pm Friday, September 24th.

The winning poems will be displayed throughout the SB Reads program, including its Kick-Off event this November.

Los Padres Closes Before Labor Day Holiday

IRE DANGER WILL CLOSE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST BEFORE LABOR DAY, from September 1st to September 17th, according to the USDA National Forest Service. The Los Padre Supervisor’s Office and ranger stations will offer virtual services at wwfed.us/ivm/w.fs.

The closure means no camping, hiking, or biking during the Labor Day Weekend.

The order includes the entire region and will provide better public and firefighter safety during the current California wildfire crisis, according to Regional Forester Jennifer Eberlien. More than 20 million acres are affected by the closure order.

As of August 31st, more than 6,959 wildfires have burned 1.8 million acres of national forest land in California during the 2021 fire season.

Reducing risk and protecting fire fighting resources was at the heart of the order.

“We do not take this decision lightly, but this is the best choice for public safety,” said, Eberlien.

Those caught entering closed Forest Service lands, which includes campgrounds, hiking trails, and recreation sites, usually face fines of up to $5,000 for violating closure orders.

The order does not affect the Humbolt Tolyabe National Forest, which is in a different region than the Pacific Southwest.

OR THE FIRST TIME IN THE 2021 RACE, the six candidates for mayor of Santa Barbara appeared in the same campaign forum on Friday, in what one contender termed the “political equivalent of speed dating.”

fast-paced affair, co-sponsored by Newsmakers, the “Santa Barbara Talks” podcast and TV Santa Barbara, offers voters the chance for an extended first impression of the rivals, while considering, comparing and contrasting their top-line ideas on topics critical to our future: the state of the city; homelessness; economic development and State Street; housing; equity; and governance, amid the recent turmoil and turnover at City Hall.

The candidates were beamed via Zoom into TVSB’s studio, where co-moderators Jerry Roberts and Josh Molina channeled their inner air traffic controller skills while posing several dozen questions, with the candidates providing

less-is-more, one minute answers, before each delivered a two-minute closing statement.

Besides Murillo, small business owner James Joyce III, small businessman Matt Kilrain, downtown business owner Randy Rowse, city Planning Commissioner Deborah Schwartz and Publisher Mark Whitehurst joined the encounter.

So: 78 minutes, six candidates, two moderators, six topics, 36 camera switches between candidates and zero technical mishaps from the control room, ably managed by director J.P Montalvo, assistant director Ellie Stayner and Hap Freund, our producer..

Murillo holds over 24 years of experience in the California Community College System, including working as an adjunct faculty member, acting as a Chief Business Officer for three districts, and as Superintendent/President of two districts. Prior to working in higher education, she served as a regional manager for Southern California Edison and as a City Councilmember and Mayor for the Town of Yucca Dr. Kindred Murillo Valley. City of SB Continues Cruise Ship Visit Suspension

UE TO THE ONGOING COVID-19 PANDEMIC and increased case numbers within the local area, the Santa Barbara Waterfront Department announced on August 30th that it will continue the suspension of cruise ship visits through March 1st, 2022. The next cruise ship scheduled to visit Santa Barbara is due to arrive on March 10th, 2022.

“Our cruise ship program brings millions of dollars to the local economy as well as introduces Santa Barbara to tens of thousands of people from around the world,” said Waterfront Director, Mike Wiltshire in a statement. “It is a well-run program that strategically minimizes impacts by scheduling visits only during the shoulder seasons and often mid-week. That being said, the health and safety of our community, as well as the health and safety of cruise ship passengers visiting our area are our top priority so we have decided to pause the program. United Way’s Fun in the Sun Serves Over 350 Local Children

FFERING ENGAGING LEARNING, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES, United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Fun in the Sun program touched the lives of over 350 local children and 250 parents this summer. A free learning program committed to supporting long-term educational improvement for low-income children and families, FITS not only helped students tackle summer learning loss, but also learning and social skill loss amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“United Way is committed to continuously improving FITS in order to deliver a world-class program,” said Steve Ortiz, President and CEO of UWSBC. “FITS’s outstanding results would not be possible without the help and support of many individuals and organizations. Thanks to your support and that of others, this program will continue to grow in quality and scope for local children and families.”

This year’s instruction featured STEAM programming, with lessons including mural art with a local artist, lessons with the Math 4 Love curriculum, and an owl pellet dissection. Additionally, students had the chance to bike and learn about maintaining bicycles through a partnership with Santa Barbara Bike Coalition, go on outdoor walking trips with Nature Track, and learn about gardening and food sustainability through gardening programs at each FITS location.

Beyond these academic programs, students experienced yoga and a mindfulness program named Inner Explorer, which has been used at the Goleta Union School District. Parents also had the opportunity to access the Inner Explorer mindfulness curriculum. FITS staff also were prepared to offer additional social and emotional support by undergoing training from Family Service Agency and Hospice of Santa Barbara.

Ultimately, at the end of the FITS program, 89 percent of participants shared that they feel more excited when they think about their future education and career, and 82 percent reported that they care more about learning and look forward to returning to school. 88 percent of students said that they get along better with others who may talk, look, or act differently than them, and 60 percent shared reading was easier for them.

SDRI’s Taste of the Vine Event Raises Over $200,000

O

NE OF THE COMMUNITY’S MOST POPULAR WINE-THEMED EVENTS, this year’s 14th annual Taste of the Vine raised a grand total of $206,625 for the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute to continue its vital work. Held in a hybrid format, participants had the option to choose between small, in-person gatherings or virtual attendance. In total, the event attracted 133 sponsors, donors, and supportive community members.

“I am deeply grateful for the generosity from our community in support of the work done at Sansum Diabetes Research Institute through the Taste of the Vine event this year,” said Board Trustee and Taste of the Vine Committee member, Joan Arnold. “It is incredible to see that despite a global pandemic, diabetes research is still on the top of the list for so many. The work SDRI does, both locally and globally, is life changing for so many, and to be able to continue this work is so important.”

The event also featured catered meals, fresh produce boxes, and wine delivered to ticket holders’ doors. There was also an online silent auction held between August 21st-23rd, which offered high quality items such as group tours of local vineyards, a yacht cruise, condo stay in Mammoth, and a private winemaker dinner.

This year’s event sponsors included The Redman Family Trust; Brian and Kate Groat; Norman Kurland and Deborah David; Montecito Bank and Trust; Tandem Diabetes Care; and Insulet Corporation.

Local high school students are invited to hear from inspiring ocean experts as the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum hosts its Girls in Ocean Science Conference from 9am-4pm Saturday, September 11th. Featuring a range of female experts, students will be able to perform research in labs and at sea on a local vessel, presenting them with hands-on insight into maritime and ocean science focused careers and study. HE WEEKEND’S FOGGY, SOMETIMES SOGGY, WEATHER didn’t deter me from a drive to the harbor to check out one of the traditional combined races of the yachting season, the Goleta Beach Race. This yearly event includes boats competing in PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet), CHRF (Club Handicap Racing Fleet), and One Design (Harbor 20’s) fleets and most recently, cruisers. In the “before days” swimming distance just west of Goleta pier, the competitors would be ferried to the shore to enjoy a delicious BBQ and fun camaraderie before heading back to the Santa Barbara harbor.

The Goleta Beach Race has been a collaboration between the Santa Barbara Sailing Club and the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for several years; with SBYC starting and finishing the race and the SBSC hosting the onshore BBQ at Goleta Beach. This year, the picnic and shuttle to shore were missing, but the competing boats were encouraged to anchor with their own lunches and enjoy live music on the water nearby. Cruisers, racers, and members of both clubs attended both by land and sea.

Hopping out of my car to watch the start of the race, I was met with a huge surprise!

Lurking just behind the competitors maneuvering for starting positions, an unusual profile appeared. Shadowy in the curtain of fog, appearing dark and ominous, this huge vessel lacked the shape of the pleasure liners that occasionally appear offshore.Was this a nautical Death Star hiding behind the sails at the start line? Right then and there, I snapped a picture. But then... just to the southeast, I spotted another floating behemoth, an unmistakeable luxury superyacht with a profile much more like the massive pleasure palaces designed to navigate the oceans of the world.

After a consult with Professor Google, I was informed that it wasn’t the Death Star I saw behind the start line, but a 217 foot catamaran, Hodor, known as the world’s largest toy box. What to do when the decks of your superyacht can’t accommodate your favorite toys apparently wasn’t an issue for billionaire owner Lorenzo Fertitta, former CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. With its stealth-grey paintwork lightened by a vibrant orange stripe, this traveling toy chest looks like a warship ready to do battle (like my original thought!). Were it not for the color-matched Airbus helicopter and the conspicuously large tenders perched on the upper deck, one might come to the same conclusion at first sight.

Additionally housed in the huge garage below decks are nine jet skis, four Yamaha quad bikes, two side-by-side ATVs, four trail motorcycles, two dinghies, and one Hobie Cat. The leftover space is occupied by an Aurora-3 submersible. The Hodor was designed to shadow the mothership should there be a need for further recreational accoutrements.

The mothership with the sleek lines is Fertitta’s floating hotel, the 285 foot showstopper Lonian designed to navigate the seven seas of the world! Its pièce de résistance is a swimming pool with a glass bottom that doubles as the ceiling of the beach club below. A built-in movie screen is integrated into the edge of the pool for one’s entertainment pleasure. The interiors include a glass elevator to serve all five decks and an epic lounge with full-beam panoramic views. The superyacht can sleep a total of 14 guests in seven cabins, including an owner’s stateroom, four large guest staterooms and two VIP suites. There are also 15 crew cabins and one for the captain. Oh yes... then there’s the helicopter landing pad with yet another Airbus helicopter awaiting passengers.

Now how’s that for recreational boating? Needless to say, Fertitta’s flotilla distracted me from watching the start of the Goleta Beach Race and by the time my eyeballs settled back into my head, the boats had already rounded Santa Barbara Point headed for their destination. Never a dull moment at the harbor, that’s for sure! Come on down and check things out for yourself...

‘A Drop in the Bucket’

UC Santa Barbara political scientist illuminates the contrast between oil companies’ claims and actions when it comes to going green

Instead, major oil firms engage in what Mahdavi and his coauthors call “hedging,” or making relatively small investments in green energy while also maintaining large stakes in traditional oil markets. “Hedging is the idea of managing risk,” Mahdavi explained. “It means a firm is investing in upstream oil production while also investing in a small wind farm and in energy efficiency. They’re doing both things because they are trying to minimize risk if there is stringent policy or shareholder pressure in the future. They stop short of fully committing to any one investment or sector – other than oil, that is.”

The oil companies may give lip service to their green energy investments, but that is far from the full picture. “Even the most ambitious companies are spending less than 0.1 percent of their total revenues on renewables and low-carbon solutions,” said Mahdavi. “They might be saying that they’re going to invest in solar and wind, but, while they do invest in those types of companies, it’s a drop in the bucket in terms of their total expenditures.”

In order to track the difficult-to-quantify data of corporate messaging, the team looked at over 1700 investor calls from 2004 to 2019. “We evaluated about 16 million words that are part of these conversations,” Mahdavi said. “We tracked what firms were saying regarding six different components of climate politics and climate policy — things like carbon pricing, carbon capture, national laws. and international agreements.”

The research team chose investor calls in order to hold the firms accountable. “We picked this method because this is not just cheap talk,” Mahdavi explained. “Firms are held liable for what they say to their investors, both legally and financially. There is enough of a costliness there that we felt it’s a bit harder for firms to spin or outright lie.”

The researchers then compared the firms’ statements to data from their operations, Mahdavi explained, including how much carbon they emit, how much energy they use, their future oil commitments, and their renewable and non-oil investment deals.

They found a large disparity. Mahdavi and his co-authors were surprised to discover that not a single firm was strictly committed to decarbonization, but there was a lot of variation in their level of commitment. “People used to think that all of these firms were similar, or divided along continental lines,” Mahdavi said. “It’s not just that American firms like Exxon or Conoco operate one way and European firms like Shell or BP operate another way.”

Rather, the team found that geographical location mattered because of a combination of regulatory and political factors. “National policy and domestic corporate culture – particularly domestic investor culture – have an impact on how global companies operate,” Mahdavi said. “It’s not necessarily the case that global policies like the Paris Agreement by themselves dictate policy and decarbonization. We found that there is variation that tracks with how individual companies are regulated and how they differ in corporate culture.”

The disparities across the industry are ultimately a good sign, Mahdavi explained,

because it means that change can come from more manageable local efforts, as opposed to just from multi-national climate accords. “It’s a somewhat hopeful message that you can impact and influence change with domestic policy and investor culture in your home country. You don’t have to rely solely on international climate policy.”

Looking to the future, Mahdavi says that he hopes this research impacts how activists and local governments approach climate regulation for the oil industry. “I hope this information about the nuances that do exist in the oil sector and the competing pressures the companies are facing influences the design of stronger policy, activist demands, and shareholder demands to ultimately find the right pressure points that could lead to lasting change,” he said.

Carol Velas to Direct New Westmont Nursing Program CAROL VELAS will direct Westmont College’s new Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which is expected to begin in January 2022.

Formerly the senior manager for state licensing and accreditation at Chamberlain University in Chicago, Velas has served as a registered nurse for 35 years.

Her nursing experiences have included oncology, labor and delivery, post-partum, newborn nursery, medical/surgical, and pediatrics. She also helped design Westmont’s new nursing program, and acted Carol Velas as a consultant for its initial feasibility study. SBEF Presents $16,000 and Instruments to Local Music Teachers

S STUDENTS REJOICE IN PLAYING MUSIC IN PERSON TOGETHER AGAIN, the Santa Barbara Education Foundation has ensured that local music teachers have the necessary tools to make this year a success. Earlier this month, the organization distributed more than 150 instruments donated by community members to Santa Barbara Unified School District music teachers. SBEF further donated $16,000 to SBUSD music teachers to maintain the instruments and purchase classroom supplies.

“Hands-on learning with music is just what our students need right now,” stated SBEF Program Manager Katie Szopa. “We are just so thankful that our community came together to support music education during what’s been a very challenging time in our local schools.”

All of SBUSD’s elementary students, which total over 5,000 children, learn to play an instrument while attending school. Both the donated instruments and the funding were the result of an ongoing fundraising effort led by SBEF, and supported by community partners such as the Irene F. Anderson Foundation, Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation, Pacific Premier Bank, and Johnson Ohana Foundation. The effort also included the proceeds from local radio station 99.9 KTYD’s annual Keep the Beat Radiothon.

SB Zoo Anticipates Endangered Masai Giraffe Births

N A JOYFUL ANNOUNCEMENT for zoo attendees and the endangered Masai giraffe population, the Santa Barbara Zoo has confirmed that two of its Masai giraffes are pregnant. The first, Adia, is due in January 2022, while the second, Audry, is expected to deliver in July 2022. The birth of these calves next year will mark a total of ten Masai giraffes born at the Santa Barbara Zoo since 2013.

“We’re excited to welcome another Masai giraffe to our herd and continue to contribute to the population of this endangered species,” said Dr. Julie Barnes, the Zoo’s Vice President of Animal Care & Health. “This is a great example of the critical work done at the Santa Barbara Zoo with our incredible animal care team.”

Adia has previously given birth to one other calf at the zoo, and Audrey has given birth to seven calves. Michael, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s adult male Masai giraffe, is the father of both calves.

Arriving at the zoo in 2011, he remains an extremely genetically important male Masai giraffe, as he is only related to his nine children. Eight of these calves have gone on to other zoos that are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as a part of a cooperative breeding program.

Currently, there are an estimated 37,000 Masai giraffes living in Kenya and Tanzania.

Masai giraffes continue to face poaching risks as well as habitat loss, and were declared an endangered species in 2018 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

T’S NO SECRET THAT CALIFORNIA HAS A HOUSING PROBLEM. Its bias for single-family, ‘not-in-my-backyard’ (NIMBY) zoning since the 1960s has finally caught up with reality—in the form of more than 150,000 residents homeless and some 700,000 new homes built last year in California, whereas 1,500,000 new jobs were created.

Where are these people expected to live? It’s also no secret that the real problem is affordability. Commuters that work in Silicon Valley, for instance, must travel up to two hours per day to reach their jobs, because homes they can afford are on the farthest outreaches of metropolitan areas, with little mass transit yet planned to speed up the commute.

COVID-19 exacerbates the problem with existing-home inventories dropping to their lowest level in 2020, and annual prices then rising at double-digit rates when consumers came out of their stay-at-home shells looking for too few available to purchase.

The Calculated Risk graph dating from January 2002 shows that existing-home inventories in YoY change and months of supply reached their low in January 2021 and have been rising fairly sharply since then.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who came into office with bold pronouncements about a “Marshall Plan for Housing,” said he supported plans to increase density near transit, but never endorsed an individual bill that would implement that goal.

California legislators just took a huge step to address the state’s housing crisis by allowing homeowners to double up. The state assembly passed a bill last week (August 26th) that allows for two-unit buildings to be built on lots previously zoned for singlefamily homes.

It’s a significant reversal of decades of policy built around restrictive single-family zoning. In California, as across the U.S., allowing for one housing unit to be built per parcel of land has been standard. It’s what gave rise the suburbs as we know them, but has also been used as a tool in racist housing policies that have excluded Black, brown, and Native Americans from homeownership. In recent years, restrictive zoning has been a primary driver of the state’s affordable housing shortage. The median home price in California has risen 27 percent in the past year alone, and currently sits at more than $800,000.

The bill would allow more building where it’s now illegal, with the intent of reducing California’s fast-rising home prices and increasing access to homeownership through a greater variety of options, according to state Senate leader Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, who introduced the bill and similar versions in the past.

To lessen concerns from more than 100 cities and neighborhood groups that oppose the bill, Atkins on Monday added a few amendments that give local jurisdictions some veto power over units that threaten public health and safety and curtail potential speculation. The bill — approved by the Senate in May and two Assembly policy committees in June — made it out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee Monday and was approved by the full Assembly Thursday on a 45-19 vote.

(1.50 million) according to the NAR. Unsold inventory sits at a 2.6-month supply at the present sales pace, up slightly from the 2.5-month figure recorded in June but down from 3.1 months in July 2020, a historic low.

The housing market is so hot that individual investors or second-home buyers, who account for many cash sales, purchased 15 percent of homes in July. All-cash sales accounted for 23 percent of transactions in July, up from 16 percent in July 2020.

But first-time buyers purchased just 30 percent of existing sales, which means most young adults leaving school and/or their parents’ home may find rental housing a more viable option for the foreseeable future.

Much more must be done, in other words. And it will take years for this to happen with much more multi-family housing amid denser zoning in the cards. And it likely will be closer to needed public transportation hubs, like it or not.

AKEN IN BY THE LURE OF THE SHORE, artists from Marcia Burtt Gallery share paintings and photographs of this experience in Coastal Influence, a group exhibition of paintings and photography on view through October 10th. Following, Gallery Director Cynthia Stahl shares her observations.

Ocean overlook paintings by Erling Sjovold and Ian Roberts show water pushing in and rising above the land, threatening to spill over and outside the frame. The distant ocean, created by Marilee Krause with a blue stripe of watercolor bleeding over a brown hillside, promises something bigger, just ahead, beckoning us to venture to the coast.

The inlets in Jeff Yeomans’ and Marilyn Turtz’s paintings spawn upsidedown worlds in reflections. Bluffs and trees undulate at the slightest breeze from across the water.

Wet sand distorts surroundings into flat shapes and streaks of color in Patricia Doyle’s paintings that find abstraction in the real, in a surface both porous and reflective.

Marcia Burtt and Anne Ward bring us closer to the ocean, expanding vistas of the shoreline right up to where the artists stood with their easels in the wet sand. The greater curve of the coast and repetitively breaking waves pull us into their day at the beach.

Ann Lofquist and Michael Ferguson survey the tactile coast of greenspeckled, moss-covered rocks. Rise and surge of salt water, and foam formed from white washes over blues, grays, and greens evolve into a splash of thick white paint, generating waves crashing on rocky shores.

Susan Petty and Bill Dewey step into the water and stop motion to portray the variety of textures, detritus, and colors that are impossible to see when the ocean is moving. Their art suspends animation.

Using brushstrokes and the speed of a camera shutter, they take us into an underwater realm.
