Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation Hosts Their Annual Gold Ribbon Campaign Throughout September, to Coincide with Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF) supports families living in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties that have a child with cancer by providing financial, educational, and emotional support. TBCF offers programs that allow parents to be supported and to know they are not alone.

Parents should never have to worry about the financial and emotional burden brought on by cancer and this year, TBCF families need our help more than ever before.

Temporary Restraining Order Issued Against Buellton All Sport Fitness Center

P

ANDEMIC HEALTH ORDER VIOLATIONS have led to the closure of a Fitness Center in Buellton this week. All Sport Fitness Center will cease its indoor operations after receiving a temporary restraining order (TRO) from Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Jed Beebe. Located in Buellton, this TRO follows All Sport’s continued violations of both state and county health orders. These orders prohibit gyms and fitness centers from holding indoor activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The District Attorney’s Office remains committed to protecting public health and safety by enforcing state and local public health orders,” said Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley. “Compliance with these orders is essential to combatting COVID-19 in Santa Barbara County.”

Leading up to the hearing, the City of Buellton’s code inspector and the District Attorney’s Office issued warnings to All Sport to act in accordance with state and county public health orders. Despite this, All Sport continued to host indoor operations. The Consumer Protection Unit of the District Attorney’s Office has filed a civil complaint, alleging that All Sport violated California’s Unfair Competition Law. Judge Beebe issued the TRO after a hearing on August 31st, and it will remain in effect until September 11. At that time, Judge Beebe will decide on the appropriateness of a preliminary injunction in preventing All Sport from violating public health orders while the case is pending.

SB Beaches Closed to Stationary Activities over Labor Day Weekend

OLD UP YOUR BEACH CHAIRS AND UMBRELLAS — Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) has announced that over Labor Day weekend all stationary activity on Santa Barbara beaches will be barred. The restrictions will go into place September 4th at 12:01am, and run through September 7th at 11:59pm.

“Reduced disease transmission is critical in the fight against COVID-19,” said SB County Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg. “We anticipate a high volume of visitors at our beaches during the Labor Day weekend, which will impede the practice of safe and necessary social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Santa Barbara County. Our community has remained diligent in their efforts and now is the time to protect all the positive outcomes we have accomplished.”

As the SBCPHD specifically prohibits stationary activities, walking to and from the ocean for water sports and exercising on the beaches will be allowed. The prohibited activities include, but are not limited to, standing, sunbathing, sight-seeing, picnicking, sitting, or lying on the beaches or the beach parkways. Similarly, items used for stationary beach activities like umbrellas, sand and beach toys, chairs, grills, and coolers are also banned.

The SBCPHD Health Office Order also called for the closing of all Waterfront parking lots from September 4th at 2am to September 8th at 6am. The exceptions to this order will be Harbor Main, Stearns Wharf, and Launch Ramp.

Hollister Ranch Coastal Access Program Opens Third Public Survey

A

S A PART OF THE EFFORTS TO UPDATE THE HOLLISTER RANCH COASTAL 15 ACCESS PROGRAM PLANS, the state of California has opened its third public survey. Focused on gathering public feedback on HRCAP’s Objectives and Evaluation Criteria, this survey will inform any future plans proposed to allow public access to the shoreline of Hollister Ranch.

“This process is proceeding quickly so it is important to make your opinions known now,” expressed Gaviota Coast Conservancy Executive Director Doug Kern in his statement announcing the survey’s opening. The|conservancy continues to be an active supporter of the At the Center of Santa Barbara’s Cultural Conversation www.VoiceSB.com HRCAP. HRCAP plans have been in the works for over 30 years, with the original propositions being made by the California Coastal Commission between 1981 and 1982. These plans proposed allowing for access to Hollister Ranch’s 8.5 miles of beach, with limits placed on the number of daily visitors due to environmental concerns.

However, these plans never came to fruition.

Adding to the delay was the vetoing of the 2018 attempt to pass bill AB 2534, which would have allowed funding for means of public access to Hollister Ranch shores. This veto was made on the grounds that the HRCAP plans need to be updated, leading to the series of surveys that are currently being opened to the public. This planning process is ongoing, but a 2020 timeline posted on the California Coastal Commission website indicates hopes for hearings and plan adoptions to take place in Spring 2021.

Mathematicians describe the interplay between COVID transmission and air circulation

OST COVID GUIDELINES HAVE STRESSED THE 6-FOOT PHYSICAL DISTANCING RULE, with the idea being that the virus spreads through large droplets produced when we talk, cough or sneeze.

Relatively heavy, these droplets tend to fall to the ground before they travel more than a few feet.

“However we are having these outbreaks even when people are keeping this sixfoot distance, and especially indoors,” said Bjorn Birnir, the director of UC Santa Barbara’s Center for Complex and Nonlinear Science. More recent evidence suggests that Bjorn Birnir the virus also travels in smaller droplets and aerosols, which can linger in the air for hours.

Birnir and his colleague Luiza Angheluta — a professor at the University of Oslo and currently a visiting researcher at UCSB’s Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics — decided to apply their expertise in fluid dynamics to COVID super-spreading events to understand how they might have happened. The crucial factor, they found, was air circulation. Their results appeared on medRxiv, the preprint server for health sciences, and are currently undergoing peer review.

In late January and early February, ten individuals from three families all fell ill after having eaten at the same air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China on Chinese New Year. The cases all were linked to a single contagious customer at the restaurant.

Birnir studies seemed perfect – Bjorn Birnir for understanding what happened at the restaurant. He specializes in fluid dynamics and was working on a class of problems called Lagrangian fluid dynamics, which involves following a fluid’s flow. “This is exactly what you want to do with these droplets and aerosols,” he said. “You want to follow them, and you want to see where they go.” Fittingly, Birnir had just made significant progress in this domain in January.

Fluid flow is random and irregular, so mathematicians don’t try to capture all the details. Instead, they take statistical averages of the total fluid flow over a period of time. This technique allowed Birnir and Angheluta to build a model of how the flow carries around particles, which are called “passive scalars” because they are carried by the flow, but don’t influence it.

“What we discovered was that the concentration of these droplets and aerosols are actually building up over time in a confined space,” he said. This

contrasted sharply with the belief that infectious droplets were large and would just settle out of the air.

After 15 minutes in an unventilated room the size of that section of the restaurant, a person anywhere would experience the same effects as if they had been sitting next to the contagious individual. “And in an hour, it’s four times what you would get if you were initially sitting next to the infected person,” Birnir said.

Many people had assumed that air conditioning would mitigate this issue. Namely, that the combination of the AC filter and the intake of outside air would be enough to keep viral loads in check. But the researchers found that normal air conditioning only delayed the particle buildup in the restaurant by ten minutes, and decreased the one-hour exposure rate to 2.5 times what it would have been initially right next to the contagious person.

OULD IT BE THAT THE SEASONS are about to change once again? It seemed the heat of the last few weeks signaled a summer in high gear with beaches dotted with umbrellas, visitors strolling on the sidewalks and harbor walkways, and restaurants along State Street and Cabrillo Boulevard packed with happy diners. And now suddenly it’s … Labor Day? How is that possible?

Clueless as I might be, Mother Nature definitely is not! The chill in the air that suddenly arrived was the first clue, not to mention the leaves on sycamore trees are beginning to don their Autumn colors. During my evening walks I’ve noticed that some have already fallen to the ground in anticipation of the coming season. Judging from last weekend’s huge crowds and those this Labor Day weekend, I’m in good company being astonished that a seasonal change is upon us!

The good news is that last weekend I finally found a (legal) parking spot over the crowded weekend, even though every lot along the waterfront seemed completely full. How about that kinda luck? After the fog lifted I was finally able to get a full view of the Fall yacht regattas from the deck of the Yacht Club.

Nearby was another racing fan perched on the railing, apparently also enjoying the view, although I suspect he might have had another motive, the goodies served to the on-deck diners. From his vantage point he was also able to scope out the crowds of visitors below sitting on the walkway walls and the strand noshing on take-out sushi or fish delights from the harbor’s restaurants - all potential donors. I’ve decided that seagulls are the smartest creatures on the planet: they fly, swim, walk, and wrap and unwrap packaging with the skillset of Amazon Prime!

On the subject of our Labor Day weekend, summer’s end celebrants are here in Santa Barbara in vast numbers.

Restaurants are full, the Funk Zone teeming with visitors, and State Street’s pedestrian zone packed with shoppers - truly a wonderful way to wave the summer months Adieu and to keep our local merchants happy.

The County of Santa Barbara however, has issued restrictions as a reminder of the ever present coronavirus, closing all Santa Barbara area beaches to stationary activities from Friday, September 4th through Monday, the 7th. Stationary activities include sun bathing and beach parties, but not pedestrian access to and from the ocean for water sports or active physical activity.

“We anticipate a high volume of visitors at our beaches during the Labor Day weekend, which will impede the practice of safe and necessary social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Santa Barbara County,” stated Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg in a press release last week.

“Our community has remained diligent in their efforts and now is the time to protect all the positive outcomes we have accomplished.”

As much as I like to sit on the beach enjoying the panorama of the coastline and the Channel Islands that frame our horizons, I do feel the need to exercise caution during this busy end of the summer weekend by complying with the County’s mandate. Nonetheless, I wish everyone a happy four day holiday here in beautiful Santa Barbara and I look forward to the activities scheduled for Fall down at the harbor at the heart of the city. T A GLANCE, ONE WOULD THINK THE PHOTOS — SHOWING HUNDREDS OF MASKLESS YOUNG PEOPLE ON BALCONIES AND STREETS — were pre-pandemic. Yet these images, taken by University of California, Santa Barbara student Max Abrams, depict Isla Vista in the days after Chancellor Henry Yang asked students to avoid returning to the area. They show that despite Yang’s statement, and the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department prohibiting gatherings, Isla Vista party culture persists.

“Although this is news, I don’t really think this is new,” said Abrams, who is the lead news editor for UCSB’s student newspaper The Daily Nexus. “People will always find a way to party out here, no matter what the consequences are.”

UCSB is taking active steps to decrease

the number of students on campus this fall.

Almost all classes will be held online, except for laboratories or classes needing in-person interaction. All indoor study locations are closed and no in-person events will be held. Yang also announced last week that on-campus housing will be reserved for students with “special circumstances.” He further implored students to not return to the Isla Vista area, citing COVID-19 concerns.

“Since the beginning of August, our campus has been informed of more than 65 cases of COVID-19 among our students,” wrote Yang in his August 28th statement. “This number represents more than 60 percent of the COVID-19 cases in Isla Vista since March. The relatively high population density of Isla Vista and the crowded conditions in which many students live are contributing factors to this recent surge. We urge all of our students who can to avoid being in Isla Vista for fall quarter.”

However, despite these efforts to limit Isla Vista’s population, students are moving back.

According to fourth year UCSB student Karina Cota Fierro, this influx of people has contributed to the recent rise in partying.

“I’m not sure if it’s freshmen who decided to move to IV because the dorms aren’t available or returning students, but it seems they care more about their ‘college experience,’ especially parties, than the virus and their own health,” explained Fierro, who lived in an off-campus Isla Vista apartment this summer. “It’s not because people who already lived in IV started feeling more confident, it’s people who are barely moving in.”

Fierro also spoke to her experiences witnessing the area’s nightlife, and expressed that she has temporarily found alternative housing

Isla Vista Party Culture Rages On – Despite UCSB’s Requests for Students to Stay Away

“IV is full of people wearing masks in the morning, but is hectic at night,” Fierro said.

“There are crowds of people walking along the streets, going into rooms together, getting drunk at 2am and walking around at night.”

Abrams knew that he had to bring Isla Vista’s party culture to the attention of UCSB and the greater Santa Barbara community. On the nights of August 28th and 29th, geared with a face mask and a long-lens camera, he set out to photograph Isla Vista’s party culture. Students on the street responded by screaming and yelling insults at him.

“My goal going into this was really just to shed light on what was going on,” explained Abrams. “So I had really no goal to bring change or bring discipline to anybody, the only thing I wanted to do was bring attention.”

Abrams published his images on The Daily Nexus website and social media, showing hundreds breaking SBCPHD’s guidelines on public gatherings. Throughout the summer, health orders have specified that all large gatherings, save for exemptions or sociallydistanced outside activity, are prohibited. Health Officer Order No. 2020-12.7, which went into effect August 31st, continues to uphold this. But that has not stopped Isla Vista.

“I have heard from some folks that it seems like a lot of these houses that I took pictures of and that have been on social media for hosting parties are repeat offenders — the same houses are hosting the same parties,” said Abrams.

Police officers from the Santa Barbara County’s Sheriff Office (SBSO) were present and monitoring the partying both nights Abrams went out. He heard a conversation between an officer and a young person about social distancing, and observed one of the parties dispersing after police arrived. Beyond that, he shared he did not witness further action to curb the partying.

“There’s a massive lack of oversight, because you live in your own place with your own friends, you pay your own rent, off in this little — not even a town — a designated area with very few consequences and you can kind of do whatever you want,” said Abrams. “And that’s it, that’s the

way IV has always been. And right now it’s a blessing to the few who want to party, but a curse to the rest of the town who wants to stay safe.”

The Isla Vista Foot Patrol has been advised to take an educational approach first when encountering parties, according to Raquel Zick, SBSO Public Information Officer. Beyond these efforts, there have been three instances of enforcement action taken against health order violations in Isla Vista since the SBCPHD began prohibiting gatherings.

“The practice that the Sheriff’s office has employed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is when we encounter situations like this that are a violation of the health order, our aim is to educate the public...with the goal of gaining voluntary compliance,” Zick explained.

Beginning this weekend, there will be an increased presence of officers in the Isla Vista area. Zick added that local law enforcement is currently strategizing with UCSB, Santa Barbara City College, county officials, and landlords on addressing the partying issue. Andrea Estrada, UCSB’s Director of News and Media Relations, later elaborated on these ongoing plans.

“SBCC and UC Santa Barbara are jointly sending messages to the residences for which violations have been reported, and we have been working with County officials regarding outreach to the landlords in Isla Vista,” said Estrada.

UCSB has also provided students with a link to an online incident report form, where they will be able to report violations of public health guidelines to campus officials. These violations will be shared with the Office of Student Conduct, and students could face disciplinary action for violating the university’s Student Conduct Code.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health crisis, not a student conduct crisis, and we will continue to approach our work as an educational institution from this perspective. However, there are limits,” warned an August 27th email sent to UCSB students with the form’s link.

Voucher Program at Housing Authority Offers Security During Pandemic

NPRECEDENTED HOUSING ISSUES are being met head on at the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara. With the pandemic causing job and income losses, both renters and landlords are finding relief in the programs provided by the Housing Authority.

Six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, many Santa Barbara residents are bravely facing the strain of reduced work hours, furloughs, layoffs, job and income loss, not to mention a loss in federal unemployment aid and state benefits that have been exhausted. Many families are forced to downsize from two to one income in order to care for young children at home due to unaffordable day care or to manage their school age student’s online distance learning program.

This economic downturn comes at a time when our residents are already stressed from coping with sky-high rents and a historically low inventory of clean, decent, affordable housing. These negative forces have bred a looming crisis as we enter a new month when rent is due and tenants, even though they are protected by an open-ended eviction moratorium, have no way to pay for mounting back rent.

According to the PewTrust.org’s Stateline blog, “Housing advocates fear a surge in evictions and homelessness. An estimated 19 to 23 million renters risk being evicted by September 30th, according to the Aspen Institute.” “Eviction moratoriums, on their own, aren’t enough — they simply delay the inevitable as renters accrue debt and small landlords struggle to operate their properties without rental income,” Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, told Stateline in an email.

Eviction moratoriums, Yentel wrote, “must be paired with substantial and sustained rental assistance.” At least $100 billion is needed to keep renters stably housed during and after the pandemic, she said.

The Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) is actively engaged in addressing these daunting circumstances through their landlord incentive program.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is designed to attract, enroll, and retain rental property owners and property management companies who want to achieve an economic boost by keeping their units occupied with a steady revenue stream.

Guaranteed, “pandemic-proof” rental income is just one of many landlord “perks” that come from being part of the HACSB Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. A few of the many other benefits include: $500 signing bonus for new landlords leasing up a Section 8 participant with a City issued voucher; Available Section 8 unit damage protection; reimbursement to the owner of up to $2,000 for unpaid unit damages, rent, and related court costs; Referral bonus of $100 to person referring a new landlord to the program (Section 8 participants not eligible); and a Dedicated Housing Authority staff to answer questions when a housing case manager is not available.

EconomicVOICE Joblessness to Increase This Fall?

T

HE INITIAL CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CURVE HAS FLATTENED, rather than continuing to decline as the U.S. economy opens. Why? The coronavirus infection rate hasn’t declined, in a word, and studies are showing that consumer fears of COVID-19 are hurting the economy more than government decrees to combat the virus.

There were a seasonally adjusted 1.06 million new claims this week, and initial claims have been hovering around the one million marker for three weeks. The question is when will it decline further, indicating more hiring. But new research posits that may not be happening soon.

The National Bureau of Research (NBER) just put out a Working Paper entitled Consumers Fear of Virus Outweighs Lockdown… showing that fear of the effects of COVID-19 outweigh the government restrictions on business operations in causing the “steep drop in business activity.”

This is while CDC director Robert Redfield recently warned in a WebMD interview that America is bracing for “the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we’ve ever had.”

He feared that when the second or third surge in the pandemic hits (depending on who’s counting) with the fall flu season, unemployment might rise again, maybe to levels not seen in recent history. We are still at a 10.2 percent unemployment rate, and next Friday’s August unemployment report might not show improvement in the rate, but may even worsen.

“By comparing counties with and without restrictions, the NBER researchers conclude that only seven percentage points of the 60 percentage points overall decline in business activity can be attributed to legal restrictions,” said their public summary of the report.

“Most of the decline resulted from consumers voluntarily choosing to avoid stores and restaurants.”

And average daily deaths haven’t yet declined from more than 1,000 per day since July and the summer openings. So, any lifting of those restrictions will not have much effect until consumers feel safe enough that the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.

In fact, the researchers’ counter-intuitive conclusion is that lifting lockdowns could

have the unintended effect of discouraging consumer spending (which drives 70 percent of economic activity these days), “if repealing lockdowns leads to a fast enough increase in COVID infections and death.”

Retail sales rose 1.2 percent in July, the government said. Economists polled by economists had forecast a two percent advance. Receipts have slowed from a 8.4 percent increase in June and a record 18.3 percent gain in May when the economic rebound began.

In other words, consumers may be seeing the writing on the wall as we approach the cold season.

There are other more heartening signs that fall economic growth could surge. Real PCE spending rose by 1.6 percent in July. The combination of the July gains and the upward revisions to May and June puts real spending in July eight percent above the Q2 average, which guarantees a very large contribution to Q3 GDP from the consumption component.

The consensus is that GDP growth should spring back some 26 percent from its 32 percent drop in Q2. That could mean an end to the current recession that officially began in February, but no assurance there wouldn’t be a repeat unless consumers feel safer than they do today.

What’s the alternative if consumers still live in fear that COVID-19 hasn’t been controlled, and an effective vaccine developed that can protect 300 million plus Americans?

A Leap of Faith

T THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR, I asked how your real estate dreams were coming along. Everything has changed since then, although one thing remains – the importance of home, especially now – as a sanctuary, where we have learned to structure our lives in new ways. Grandeur is a reference to the concept of “the sublime,” that arose in the mid-1700s, referring to the sense of awe that humans experience in the presence of nature. Each of the artists’ work in Grandeur emanate from this deep appreciation, bringing to the canvas a sense of tranquility, peacefulness, and spirituality that cannot be put into words.

“Inspiration comes from seeing what’s around me. The more I paint, the more I am able to see. Standing in front of the easel, intently looking, peels away the layers of vision until we painters feel we are looking at the divine,” Burtt shared.

For the exhibit, local artists Marcia Burtt, Patricia Doyle, Marilee Krause, Susan Petty, Robert Abbott, and Bill Dewey are joined by Erling Sjovold (Virginia), Randall David Tipton (Oregon), Michael Ferguson (Washington), Ann Lofquist (Massachusetts), and Anne Ward and Ian Roberts (Los Angeles).

Burtt’s Ascending Shadows in acrylic showcases the top of mountains kissing the sky in a romantic and dreamlike perspective. Michael Ferguson’s Cliffy in acrylic showcases ocean water crashing against a cliff with a fascinating use of colors. Bill Dewey’s photograph, Channel Reflections, is surreal and calming, capturing the ocean’s boundless size and enchanting colors at sunset.

“Time spent looking, so greatly intensifies the ability to see, that driving home from a day of painting, I practically sob as I look out the windshield, realizing that I’m unable to grab it all,” Burtt confided.

When even those who intently analyze and absorb nature find it difficult to capture it all, and during this time when we may feel disconnected and alone, opening our eyes, hearts, and minds to the outdoors can remind us of our place in this Sublime world.

Sharing and appreciating artwork reflecting nature is a way to escape, or perhaps, find connection and peace.

Community News Santa Barbara Participates in “Forward Into Light” Campaign

ANTA BARBARA JOINED THE NATIONWIDE WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL COMMISSION’S “FORWARD INTO LIGHT” CAMPAIGN honoring the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment on August 26th. Named for the historic slogan “Forward through the Darkness, Forward into Light,” this celebration consisted of illuminating landmarks in purple and gold, the colors of the women’s suffrage movement. In Santa Barbara, participating landmarks were the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, and Casa de la Guerra, which also projected the 19th amendment’s text.

To further celebrate women’s right to vote, local art galleries Sullivan Goss and Rondo Studio also projected a video depicting photos and propaganda from the women’s suffrage movement in their front windows. Created by Jonathan PJ Smith, Kym Cochran, and Tracy Beeler, the video remains available for viewing on “The Environment Makers” YouTube channel.

HEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT NOT EVERY STUDENT IN THE CARPINTERIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (CUSD) would have access to the technology necessary for online learning, Westerlay Orchids knew it had to help. As part of Westerlay Orchids’ annual Carpinteria Education Foundation, Inc. (CEF) Fundraiser, all of the profits raised from retail showroom sales August 31st to September 5th will be donated to giving technology resources to children in need.

“Along with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability, we pride ourselves on impactful community outreach,” said Westerlay Orchids Owner and President Toine Overgaag.

As Southern California’s largest commercial orchid provider, this marks the third year Westerlay Orchids will give back to the community through the CEF fundraiser. Its 2020 goal is to match last year’s total of $18,000 in donations. Through directing funds toward giving children access to necessary technology, Westerlay Orchids hopes to make sure that no student falls behind this fall due to a lack of resources. Once the fundraiser ends, CEF will provide families on a need basis with reliable internet, devices, and more.

Katie Gorndt Appointed VP at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital

KATIE GORNDT has been named the new Vice President of Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital (SYVCH) located in Solvang. A familiar face among Cottage Health staff, Gorndt has worked as the Ambulatory Surgical Services Director at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital since April 2018. She has also worked at Lompoc Valley Medical Center as its perioperative surgical services director, as well as a nurse and hospital supervisor.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University, and holds her RN from Antelope Valley College. Casey Molino Dunn Named Music Academy’s VP of Innovation and Program Development CASEY MOLINO DUNN will begin serving the Music Academy of the West’s Artistic Operations department as its Vice President of Innovation and Program Development.

Formerly the co-director of the academy’s Music Academy Remote Learning Institute (MARLI), Dunn is familiar with the academy’s mission and program demands. He also has worked as the Director of Manhattan School of Music’s Center for Music Entrepreneurship, where he taught, co-produced professional development workshops, and more. As VP of Innovation and Program Development, Dunn is excited to continue expanding on the progress made with digital media and training during this summer’s MARLI program. Westerlay Orchids to Donate Profits to Carpinteria Education Foundation

MTD Transitions to Using All-Electric Chevy Bolts as “Relief Vehicles”

I

N AN IMPORTANT STEP TOWARD IMPLEMENTING CLEANER ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES, Santa Barbara’s Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) has begun using fourteen all-electric 2020 Chevy Bolts as a part of their non-revenue services. Thanks to support from Southern California Edison (SCE) and grant funding from Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD), MTD has also installed fourteen electric vehicle chargers in order to support the use of these electric cars.

“I’m really excited to announce our first Chevy Bolts that we’ve introduced to our fleet of relief vehicles and we’re thrilled with the partnership with the Air Pollution Control District to get this project done,” said MTD General Manager Jerry Estrada.

The electric vehicles will be used predominantly as “relief vehicles” in order to transport MTD bus operators and employees to and from buses and shifts. Each car is white, and has “Santa Barbara MTD” clearly printed in blue on the sides. MTD currently has ten of the vehicles available for use, with the remaining four on their way. Before this transition to electric transportation, MTD used gasoline-powered sedans for their non-revenue service needs. By transitioning to utilizing these 2020 Chevy Bolts in these daily operations, MTD will noticeably reduce their emissions and environmental impact.

All of the cars’ ChargePoint Level 2 electric vehicle chargers are located in MTD’s Terminal 1 yard. Before their installation, SCE’s Charge Ready Program ensured that this location was well-equipped for this new technology. This was accomplished through the program’s covering electrical upgrade and infrastructural costs, as well as providing partial rebates for each new electric charger.

Santa Barbara County APCD also supported this effort by distributing grant funding to MTD. A part of the district’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program, this funding went toward MTD paying for the fourteen vehicle chargers.

“I’m very happy to be here today in this partnership to expand the use of electric vehicles through our region to serve the needs of MTD,” expressed ACPD Executive Director Aeron Arlin Genet in MTD’s YouTube video introducing the cars to the community.

In addition to the Sing! Children’s Chorus, students interested in more challenging repertoire are also encouraged to audition for the Sing! Concert Choir. This additional commitment includes Saturday rehearsals from 10 am -11:30 am. Those accepted are expected to perform in both ensembles.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sing! Children’s Chorus now offers online rehearsals five days per week over Zoom, from 3:30 pm-5 pm. Rehearsals begin MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, and participants are required to attend a minimum of two rehearsals per week. Choristers work with program director Daniel Newman-Lessler and choral directors Christine Hollinger and Erin McKibben.

Students will also participate in virtual concerts, recording themselves from home for mixed and mastered performances to be streamed online for friends and family to enjoy.
