Enjoy the local Cuisine Much of the region remains relatively tourist-free and unknown, including its deeply traditional food blessed with bounty from the mountains, farmland and sea. Le Marche produces a varied, seasonal cuisine and truly distinctive wines. To fully appreciate the charms of this undiscovered region, combine an off-the-beaten-track tour of the region's coastal scenery, breathtaking mountain views and evocative history with an exploration of some local culinary highlights such as Olive Ascolane, stuffed olives, painstakingly and lovingly hand-made by local women; Lasagna Vincisgrassi, 12 layers of soft, slippery pasta sheets are interspersed with veal ragu, chicken liver or lamb sweetbreads, truffles or wild mushrooms, and bÊchamel sauce, cream fritta, cooked cream set in the fridge overnight, then gently coated in egg and breadcrumbs and deep-fried on skewers; or Ciauscolo, soft smoked-pork sausage flavoured with fennel, garlic and vino cotto, and served spread on toast as an appetiser or a snack‌

Michele Biagiola

Signore te ne ringrazi Michele Biagiola is one of the most talented Italian chefs. His cuisine can be hardly confined to a predefined category; not classic or avant-garde in the strict sense, it almost totally depends on the territory to which it belongs, the culinary tradition of Marche region and professional and personal experiences that enriched the life of the chef. His dishes flirt with popular cuisine, personal and collective memory and conventional use of foods, but then they take off, become autonomous and live freely thanks to the great strength that they emanate.

Taste the Wines Le Marche is a beautiful wine region, with miles of untamed coastline, picturesque fishing villages like Portonovo, Renaissance gems like Urbino (where the painter Raphael was born), medieval hamlets such as Urbania, rustic mountain villages like Carpegna and wild expanses of nature that culminate in the splendorous peaks of Monti Sibillini. The most important wine towns include the capital, Ancona, and lovely Ascoli Piceno, Cupramontana, Matelica, Cingoli, Fabriano (and its curious Paper and Watermark Museum), Conero, the fortified beautiful village of Jesi, Recanati (also famous for being the birthplace of one of Italy´s most famous poets- Giacomo Leopardi) and Numana. The Best of the Reds The best red wines coming from the region are Sangiovese and Montepulciano, the indigenous black grape varietal that reaches its optimum point in the area's dry maritime climate and limestone-rich soils. The Montepulciano grape is not related to the Tuscan wine region of Montepulciano where Vino Nobile is made, rather is a separate noble varietal. Both Sangiovese and Montepulciano are used by the two most prolific appellations for red wine- Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno- to make firm, tannic and easily recognizable wines. Moroder is an excellent producer of Rosso Conero. The Verdicchio will be the new Chardonnay! Most of the wine made in Le Marche is white, with the crisp and fresh Verdicchio varietal being the star. Although Verdicchio had long been seen as a lesser variety, the work being done by producers like Sartarelli and La Monacesca are bringing a newfound depth and personality to the region's most popular white wine. There are different types of Verdicchio- Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica, Castelli di Jesi being more prevalent. The Pecorino grape is gaining popularity in Marche and many producers are making stellar white wines with this trendy varietal. Wine available in our wine cellar on demand. Ask for our list.

Visit Treia A village full of history Treia is said to have been founded by the Sabine people in 380 BCE. Although the precise origin of the site remains unknown, its location on an elevated plateau near the Picene hilltop site of Monte Pitino could indicate that it was already a pre-Roman center. The Roman town flourished between the reigns of Augustus and Antoninus Pius, as indicated by the large collection of funerary monuments, statuary and epigraphic evidence. Large Egyptian religious statues of the Roman period have been found and are kept in the town's museum: they are unique in the Marche.. The typical medieval historic centre is surrounded by ancient walls with seven gates that mark the entrance to the village. The most well-known one is Vallesacco Gate, which has become a national monument for the famous battle in 1263 between the Montecchiesi and Corrado d’Antiochia. The main square Piazza della Repubblica with its horseshoe shape is among the most beautiful and scenic ones in Le Marche. The square offers a panoramic balcony with a view extending up to Monte Conero. Here you’ll find the Accademia Georgica, the Town Hall which houses the Civic Museum and the Cathedral. The Accademia Georgica preserves a precious heritage of books with 12,000 volumes and the town historical archive, one of the oldest and most complete in Le Marche region with codes, seals and parchments. There’s an original parchment that is 11.98 meters long!

The Cathedral of Treia is one of the largest religious buildings of the region. It is dedicated to the SS. Annunziata and preserves many works of art, including an altarpiece by Giacomo da Recanati. As for the churches, we recommend the Church of San Michele, the small Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Francesco, the Church of San Filippo and the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio. Just outside the town, in the hamlet of San Lorenzo, there’s the shrine of the Crucifix in the art nouveau style. At the entrance of the convent and the base of the bell tower there are evidences of the ancient Roman Treia, such as the reproductions of two Egyptian statues. Inside there’s a crucifix dating back to the fifteenth century. Unfortunately the visits of those churches are not possible for the moment.

15

The beautiful Town Theatre was opened on 4th January 1821. It is also known as a “shared” theatre, as it was built thanks to the contribution of Treia’s families who set up an association to promote its construction. The famous battle of Vallesacco is painted on its curtain. Visit possible on request Tourism Information Desk of Treia, Pro Loco, +39 0733 215919.

The Archaeological Museum is set in the Cloister of San Francesco and hosts many fragments of sculptures, architectural elements and inscriptions that witness the different periods of the Roman Treia, with particular evidence linked to Egypt. Among the pieces of greater value there are two heads-portrait, a headless statue with a toga and a bust of Mercury.

The Onglavina Tower is a polygonal structure built for defensive purposes. During the 50s, the tower has undergone major renovation and now is in excellent conditions. Near the built-up area of the town you can still admire the typical houses made of earth and straw. You will live again the lifestyle of Macerata farmers, visiting the Home-Museum made of earth. Inside you will find antique tools, an extraordinary loom, a traditional fireplace and what we call ‘the priest’, nothing but a bed warmer. That’s a real step back to the past!

16

Events Treia is a lively town rich in music, artistic, sporting and culinary events. First week of May there is Magnalonga, a wine and food festival for the tasting of local products and fine wines. In early July it’s the time of Fermento, a craft Beer festival held in the historic centre of Treia. More than 30 craft beers are accompanied by the typical dishes of Le Marche cuisine. For the occasion there are street performers and bands. Do not miss the Sagra del Calcione in June,a cake made from flour and eggs, filled with eggs, pecorino, sugar and oil.

The bracciale Game Treia is known for a particular game called ‘Gioco del Pallone col Bracciale‘ (Ball game with the Bracelet). It’s an ancient sport practiced mainly by the nobility. This town was home for Carlo Didimi, the greatest player of this game; the local arena where the event takes place every year has his name, in the first days of August. During the Disfida del Bracciale, one of the most evocative historical competition in Italy, the city is immersed in a suggestive atmosphere of old times with costumes, parades and recreation of traditional habits. This competition involves different teams divided according to the city’s neighbourhoods. The event is preceded by ten days of celebration starting on the last Friday of July.

Dolores Prato Dolores Prato is a major but sometimes neglected Italian author. She is perhaps most well-known for Giù la piazza non c’è nessuno (Nobody is in the Square), in which she recounts her childhood in Treia at the beginning of the twentieth century. Very intelligent, with a very accurate sense of observation, the little Dolores observed and registered all the moments of her difficult childhood in the convent of the Visitation Order of our small city. It is only when she turned 87 that she started to write her full story, remembering every single detail after so many years…A very original and brilliant masterpiece of the Italian modern Literature. It is possible, on request, to visit the different places where she lived in Treia and described in her book. Her book Giù la piazza non c'è nessuno is available in the Tourism information Center of Treia www.prolocotreia.it P.zza della Repubblica n.3, Treia +39 0733 215919

The Villa Napoleon-Spada Who knew that Treia, 9.000 habitants, has one of the most beautiful villas Napoléon style? The villa La Quiete, also called Villa Spada or Villa Napoleon is just a dream if only one could renovate it one day. Designed by the architect Giuseppe Valadier (1762– 1839, Italian architect and designer, urban planner and archeologist, a chief exponent of Neoclassicism in Italy) on order of Napoleon Bonaparte for one of his grandadmirals and brother-in-law Joachim-Napoleon Murat. The construction of the villa probably started around 1810 when Murat was king of Naples. After he got executed in Calabra in 1815, the Villa went to various owners like the rich and noble Spada Family. The house has been completly abandoned for 30 years now and needs a complete renovation. However, the place is fantastic and full of charm and history. Possible visit of the gardens on request +39 0733 215919

Visit a Pasta Factory Filotea, is a small Pasta Company, situated in Ancona, in the heart of Marche, which produces pasta according to local traditions. Filotea egg pasta is made according to an ancient recipe from Marche and carefully following the same preparation methods that our ‘grandmas’ once used. Choosing only the best eggs and flour guarantees a genuine product. Furthermore, the pasta is dried very slowly at a low temperature. This special drying process gives the pasta the authentic flavor typical of homemade pasta. This patient, artisan preparation guarantees a unique product which is incredibly light and easy to digest while its textured surface helps absorb sauces thus exalting the flavor of all ingredients. We propose you to visit the Factory in a private Tour just for you to discover a few secrets maybe, and to finish with a pasta tasting in their special place THE EXPERIENCE PASTA STORE. Listen to Verdi in Macerata Open Air Opera Festival Macerata Opera Festival is certainly one of the most beautiful open air Opera locations. The Opera Festival is hosted entirely in the magnificent theatre-shaped Sferisterio, unique in its architectural genre. Designed in 1823 by architect Ireneo Aleandri, it derives its name and its half- circumference shaped plan from the name of the game played inside: the “armband ball” or Pallone col bracciale. Performances take place in July and August. The programme of 54′ edition of Macerata Opera Festival, from July 20 to 12 August 2018, will propose, Mozart‘s Don Giovanni, Donizetti‘s L’Elisir d’Amore, Verdi‘s La Traviata: three Italian operas to establish a special relationship with the Sferisterio, Macerata and its surrounding areas. Three operas which stand out for the freshness and lightness of their structure, perfect to enhance the vast and intense acoustic space of the Sferisterio arena. www.sferisterio.it Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, 10, 62100 Macerata +39 0733 230735 (22km, 25mn)

Shoe shopping heaven is located between the provinces of Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, an area which represents the heart of the Italian footwear industry. Shoe making in Marche is concentrated around the towns of Montegranaro, where there are several companies producing footwear for men; Monte Urano, which specializes in children's shoes; and Civitanova Marche, Porto Sant 'Elpidio and Sant'Elpidio a Mare, where the largest number of manufacturers of women's shoes is concentrated. Monte Sibillini National Park The Italian national park is located across the regions of Marche and Umbria, encompassing the provinces of Macerata, Fermo, Ascoli Piceno and Perugia. It was established in 1993, and now contains more than 70,000 hectares www.sibillini.net The Grand Canyon of Le Marche, Le Lame Rosse (54km, 1h) The Lame Rosse belong to the complex of the Sibillini mountains and overlook the Lake of Fiastra, in the small hamlet of San Lorenzo al Lago. The distinctive feature of this rocky stratification is the shape, characterised by pinnacles and towers, resulting from a long erosion process. The limestone part of the mountain has shattered, creating a long stretch of gravel at the base, whereas the inner rock layers have become clearly visible. The round trip walk is about 7 km, for a duration of 3 hours/ 3 hours and a half. Park your car in the small parking area available or alternatively along the road next to the Lake of Fiastra’s dam; you should stop here for a while to enjoy the fantastic view! Continue on foot, you first have to cross the dam and then the small tunnel that leads to the only path present. After crossing a small stream with a short jump, continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads, where you can find some guidance on the various trails. Take the left path, where a steep climb begins on an unpaved road – Be careful and do not be tempted by the road on your right going downhill, that is the path leading through the undergrowth. After the climb. At the end of the path you will glimpse a valley with gravel ‘dunes’; here the climb begins again, but this is the very last effort and in less than 15 minutes you will be at the foot of the Lame Rosse. The Hat Museum (40km, 59mn) The museum in Montappone displays different examples of feluca, straw hat, cylinder, broad-brimmed pamela, fez… as well as the last hat Federico Fellini wore. The location is not just a coincidence. A newspaper from the 1860 mentioned this town in Marche “practices the art of weaving straw into hats since time immemorial, spreading the craft even to some nearby locations. Except for very few families and for children under five or six years of age, everybody here – men, women, and youngsters – work hard to make over three hundred thousand hats a year…” Now this beautiful tradition of craftsmanship continues to tell its story in that Hat Museum. www.ilcappellodipaglia.it Borgo XX Settembre N. 45 Montappone +39 0734 760426 Museo della Carta (72km, 1h27) Fabriano is famous for its paper and this specialized modern museum is surprisingly fascinating.
